4-0 out of 5 stars Board book fan
I knew my first son would love books when he gnawed his way through his first two board books. Now my second son is well on his way, both paging through and chewing on the sturdy board pages of this charming and colorful edition of Humpty Dumpty. Captivating rhythms and bright attention-getting illustrations are sure to delight any fan (child or adult) of Well's animal characters. Previous reviewers expressed concern about rhymes like "Davy Davy Dumpling" but before censoring this book, I'd ask them to think back to when your child was a plump and cuddly infant. How many times did you tickle him and say "I'm going to eat you up!" Did you really mean it? When you change a diaper are you "sugaring and buttering" your baby with powders and creams? I eat my baby up several times a day and it makes him laugh hysterically!

5-0 out of 5 stars Based on reaction of my 18 month old daughter.
I am surprised to read the reviews. I do not care about rhymes and illustrations. What I care is if my kid loves it. She always asks me read to this books at least once in a day. She is so happy when I am reading this book for her. The thick pages are really important for small kids as they can not tear them off.

2-0 out of 5 stars Odd illustrations
The Rhymes themselves are Okay but I was dissappointed in the illustrations. It is odd how humpty dumpty is not really illustrated the way we all know Humpty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very special children's books
We have the board books (like this one), as well as the two large hardbound books. My children love them, especially my daughter age two, one of whose first words was "Winkie!" after the Wee Willie Winkie rhyme. I find the negative reviews of these books very puzzling -- don't the authors of those reviews have any imagination? Or are they just close-mindedly PC? Or maybe they just do not know (literally) that a dumpling is a boiled pastry that is eaten with butter and sugar? An aspect of nursery rhymes is their connection to deep, and ancient, currents of culture.

1-0 out of 5 stars A truly odd book
My 2 year old received this as a gift. I seriously wonder whether the person read it before they bought it. Although colorful, the illustrations often don't well represent the rhymes. The rhyme about Davy the Dumpling, whom we boil in pot, then butter & sugar and eat is truly bizzare. We'll be losing this book very soon. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute Book, Bad Format
As usual, the story & illustrations are great but the "puzzle" pieces actually detract from this book. They are difficult for little hands to put back in properly (think inexpensive cardboard puzzles from the five & dime store) and after a bit fall out easily and get lost. It's a nice idea in theory but needs some work.... I'd stick with the basic books instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEDTIME FUN
THIS IS A LITTLE STURDY BOARD BOOK APPX 6 INCHES BY 6 INCHES. IT CONTAINS 5 STORY PAGES & 5 PAGES TO MATCH THE PUZZLE TO THE STORY. WHEN YOU OPEN THE BOOK THE FIRST & SECOND PAGES CONTAIN THE 5 PUZZLE PIECES TO GO ALONG WITH THE FOLLOWING STORY. WE DID NOT UNDERSTAND THIS BOARD BOOK PUZZLE CONCEPT UPON ORDERING BUT WERE HAPPILY SURPRISED, AS OUR 2 YR OLD BOY HELD THE PIECES AND ON THE SECOND READ KNEW TO MATCH UP EACH PIECE TO THE CORRECT PAGE. KIPPER & HIS BEDTIME PALS ARE COLORFUL & ADORABLE AND WE HAVE ALREADY ORDERED THE MATCHING BATHTIME-PLAYTIME & SNACKTIME. THE MOON PUZZLE PIECE HAS TO BE TURNED TO JUST THE RIGHT PLACE TO GET IN ITS PLACE -SUGGESTION THE MOON PIECE IS A CIRCLE AND THE PICTURE IN IT IS A HALF MOON IT FITS PERFECT WHEN THE YELLOW CRESENT IS ON THE LEFT HANGING AS IT WOULD IN THE SKY.

3-0 out of 5 stars Manufacturer's need to make the pieces easier to insert
I bought this book for my 18 mo. old, not because of Kipper (he hardly watches TV so he doesn't even know who Kipper is) but because I like the concept of the puzzle pieces. He loves the book, but we always have a hard time fitting the pieces back into their spots. The moon doesn't even fit back into its spot, so it's usually missing from the book because it keeps falling out. Pretty annoying.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Puzzle and book in one!
My toddler loves Kipper, so this book was a must have. Though it features few photos and not much text, the book does include several punch out puzzle pieces that can be fit into the appropriate spaces in the pages that follow.

Matching such shapes as a moon and a toothbrush into their proper places proves fun for little readers. Beware, however -- once the pieces are removed from the book and bent ever so slightly, they have a hard time remaining in their respective slots. We have several titles in this series, and I am forever finding the puzzle pieces lying around the house, away from their books! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating
My 3 yr old is enamored with fairies and this is by far her favorite book. The illustrations are outstanding, appreciated by both adult and child. She loves to hunt through and find all the hidden animals and faces in tree trunks, some lovely but some scary (she loves the scary ones!). With the attention span of a gnat, she is easily bored with long stories, but even the pages with the most writing hold her interest, besides there is great variety in each page. It captivates her imagination and she refers to often when walking in the woods and looking for fairies. This is the kind of quality book I miss from my childhood and is too hard to find in modern publications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whimsical and Magical - What Could Be Better!
Welcome to a wonderful tale of fairies. To a book of pure magic. 'Good Night, Fairies' takes you away to a magnificent land where fairies comb mermaids' hair, paint butterflies' wings and teach unicorns to fly. The story line on each page is short, thus even very little ones stay entranced in the fantasy world of fairies. It is a book, that even as an adult, you will be mesmerized by the beautiful pictures of fairies sleeping on leaves in secret gardens, dancing in the moonlight in spider's silk and hanging stars in the sky so children will have a nightlight. Children, afterall, are the closest thing to fairies! So what could be better than fairies welcoming little ones to dreamland as they drift off to sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bedtime on Fairies' Wings.....
There is nothing so wonderful as the magical, whimsical world of fairies. Join mother and child at bedtime, as she lulls her little one to sleep with enchanting details about these tiny winged creatures who help make the world a special place to live. Fairies hang the stars in the sky at night, so that every child will have a night-light, paint the colorful wings of butterflies, teach birds to sing, and unicorns to fly. They comb mermaids' hair, draw rainbows to cheer up the dark rainy sky, make the spring flowers bloom, and scatter the autumn leaves. But most of all, fairies love little children. "Of all the world's creatures, there is nothing so like a fairy as a child....." Husband and wife team, Kathleen and Michael Hague, have authored the perfect bedtime story. Everything about this picture book is elegant, engaging, and exquistite, from the beautiful script font, and quiet, soothing prose, to the marvelously intricate, lush, and expressive illustrations. Together word and art offer a gentle, sweet, and lovely trip to dreamland. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, with 321 little winged friends to discover and count, and a special red-capped fairy hidden on every page to find, Good Night, Fairies is a masterpiece, and a reassuring bedtime treasure to share and enjoy every night of the year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Magic!
Husband and wife team, Kathleen and Michael Hague have done it again! I have long been a fan of Michael Hague's lovely evocative illustrations and Kathleen's gentle prose for children but this book really is the perfect combination of their extensive talents. In a flowing script-like font the story takes us on a journey to Fairyland when a child asks his mother to tell him some things about fairy ways just as he is getting tucked into bed for the night. The mother knows lots of secret things about fairies. In Kathleen's light-hearted, kindly prose the mother explains that among many other things, they teach the birds how to sing, gather and care for all the toys that children have lost, comb the mermaids' hair, and dance in the twilight dressed in spiders' lace. Richly colored and filled with exquisite detail the double page illustrations are on every page so there are no dull pages with only text. Beautiful fairies and whimsical little gnomes and pixies crowd each page and engage in the many magics of the fairy realm. Mermaids of different races and ages relax and luxuriate in an ocean cove. There is one tiny fairy with a red cap that is hidden on each page so that a child may have the fun of pouring over the colorful details and searching to find him. The Hagues tell us that there are a total of 321 fairies in this book and challenge us to find all of them. This is a wonderful book to share with a child. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

This book has beautiful pictures! My 2 year old son loves trains and what boy doesn't love dinos? The perfect combo. My boy can read the book to me without missing a beat! I have had to tape pages back in in the paperback book we have because we have read it so many times! A favorite in our house!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite
My 2 year old son loves this book! We borrowed it one day from the library and I have to get one of his own, because he doesn't want to give the library book back. It is a little short for bedtime reading, so I read it twice and he loves it. (...) I would recommend this book very highly to other parents.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute but not a favorite
This is a cute book but rather short. Doesn't make the cut for our nightly bedtime reading. Once in a great while my 5 year old will choose to sit down with it but definitely not one of his favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Aboard for Fun.....
"Thursday was a day much like any other for Jesse. Trains and dinosaurs. Dinosaurs and trains. Just before bed, Jesse drew one last picture. Suddenly there was a loud noise and the whole house began to shake..." Hop aboard! From the dining car, to the sky window, to the tunnel up ahead and more, join Jesse and his prehistoric friends for the ride of a lifetime on the dinosaur train..... John Steven Gurney really captures the essence of young dinosaur and train lovers in this endearing little picture book. His simple text is kept to a minimum, as he lets his vibrant and evocative artwork tell the story. Each dazzling two-page spread engages, and is filled with bold color, playful details, and marvelous facial expressions, that will captivate little ones, and send imaginations soaring. Perfect for preschoolers, Dinosaur Train is a read-aloud crowd pleaser, and is sure to become an instant favorite at your house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for children of all ages
Both my three-year old girl and seven-year old boy request this book every night. They love the colorful illustrations. It is also a wonderful book to give to kids with allergies, who will relate to Amy (pie makes her sneeze).

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Dream Book!
My daughter, who is 2, loves this book! She loves to hear over and over again how the the Brindles Sweet Dream Pie cast a sweet spell over Willobie street, enticing all but Amy McPhearson who was not a fan of pie as it made her sneeze! It is so much fun to read out loud at bedtime! We took this book out of the library and we had to buy it! It's a great addition to any childs collection!

4-0 out of 5 stars Craving for a delicious book
Welcome to the wonderful fantasy land of Ma and Pa Brindle's. This book tells a delicious and fulfilling tale of one Sweet Dream Pie and what happens when people indluge in this enormous pie. Through colorful and rich pictures and such descriptive words as: "clouds of powdered sugar, a chocolate tornado, or a thick, sweet syrup bubbled and oozed down the sides," Audrey Wood allows the reader to feel as if they too are enjoying a piece of Ma Brindle's Pie. Come and allow your dreams to indulge in a piece of Sweet Dream Pie.

Throughout the night, one-by-one, more oni appear, until there are ten in all, and they grow bigger, too. They begin beating their taiko drums, louder and louder. They sail on a raft, play games, have a big meal, and eventually chase away the boy's scary dreams.

In this playful, rhyming story, young children find reassurance and comfort for their fears when scary dreams come their way. Through art and story, children also learn about Japanese taiko drumming and the Japanese words and characters for the numbers one to ten. ... Read more

One oni after another rise out of the sand in this delightful book by Matthew Gollub. In this book, the oni are not so much terrible and fierce, but endearing and protecting. They play their Japanese drums (taiko) to ward off any evil in their path. A brief history of the oni, the taiko, and kanji (Chinese characters that were adopted in written Japanese) appears at the end of the book, and a chart is included for those eager to learn to write the kanji.

The illustrations by Kazuko Stone, are bright and cheerful and show the imagination that went into the making of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goodnight room
I really love this book. I remember reading it when I was little and it always seemed filled with mystery, the beauty of the illistrations is immense in my [slightly biased] eyes. I hope that little kids now like it as much as I did when I was little, it's really worth it, a cute story, and a nice way to be put to bed. ... Read more

Book Description

A young boy trudges through deep snow in a neighborhood park. Suddenly a strong wind grabs his coat and lifts the child up into the air. Soon the boy is soaring high above his strangely silent, snow-covered neighborhood. As he flies over familiar sites-a bridge over a frozen river, a baseball field, and an amusement park-he gains a new perspective on the world around him. The boy's airborne adventure provides a magical-if temporary-escape from the routine of everyday life. In the end the boy returns to the safety of his home and family, but is left wondering: Was it all just a marvelous dream or did it really happen?

Author Myron Uhlberg's story is based in part on his own childhood memories of the Great Blizzard of 1947 which blanketed Brooklyn and the surrounding area under several feet of snow. An author's note at the back of the book provides details about the snowstorm and places this fantasy in its historical context. Illustrator Gerald Fitzgerald two-page, gently softened illustrations beautifully evoke the story's nostalgia and dreamlike quality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect "Just One More Story" Before Bed
The other night, my three-year-old son couldn't sleep. I took out my daughter's copy of Flying Over Brooklyn and started to read. He was wide-eyed and smiling through the entire adventure and absolutely surprised when we reached the end, "That was a dream?" he asked. "Yes, go to sleep so you can have an adventure too," I replied. "Wow, I would if I could have dreams THAT good!" I am sure that when my children are older they will appreciate the dreamy glimpses of a world far removed from our own (Brooklyn) and the historic significance of a child's recollection of an unusual event, but for now, they simply enjoy sharing the boy's dream-come-true flight over a snow-covered city. Meanwhile, I appreciate the positive spin it gives to the words, "Bed-time!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for city kids
"This is the first childrens book I have seen written for city kids. Every city kid will appeciate this story about flying over the city and seeing the great snow storm. It is truly a child's dream.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Childhood Memory
Mr. Uhlberg's book FLYING OVER BROOKLYN should be required reading for any child who can read, or even before he has that ability. It is a lovely illustrated book that my grandchildren were delighted and fascinated by, especially when I was able to corroborate how the little boy felt. I, too, as a little boy lived through that blizzard in 1946 and that made the grandkids' eyes open wide, I guess with admiration that I had survived the ordeal. Kudos to Mr. Uhlberg. Give us more, sir! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our hands-down favorite bed-time book!
I had been looking for a nice touch and feel book for a while before finding this one and somehow I didn't love any of them. However, this one was soo cute that I decided I had to buy it.

It quickly became my daughter's favorite book - we read it every evening as part of the going to bed routine (my daughter is 20 months now and we've been doing it for abut 4 months). We even have to build up a crescendo - we start with one or two other books and leave the best for last - so we can go to bed with all those tectile memories fresh on our mind.

The illustrations are very pretty and the rythm nice and sweet - I know each line by heart. The touch and feel sections are sufficiently varied among the different animals to give the baby a full range of tactile experiences. My daughter always loved soft furry things so she will often not only touch the animals but kiss them, too. And now she's at the point where she'll point to different things on the page and wait for me to name them. She loves "feeding" the chick and saying "bow wow" and "mau mau" when we look at the dog and cat. And when we reach the lamb, mommy has to touch it, too, before we can flip the page. At the last page we practice covering the baby with her blanket and thus prepare for our own going to bed time.

Definitely a lot of fun and worth the money - since it's been a hit with our daughter from day one. I would recommend this book to anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and imaginative
My daughter loved this book!
From the moment we borrowed it from the library, to the moment we returned it, we had to read it 3-4 times a day to her.(And when we returned it, we had to go buy it to appease her).
Beautiful prose, wonderful illustrations that stirred my daughter's imagination and caused her to stop me on each page and ask questions in delight.
This book is a definite "buy"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unicorns are real!
The book is a delightful tale of the wonders of a child's imagination.A unicorn in the tale is a magical dog.In reality, a child's imagination never ceases to amaze an adult or a unicorn. It is a joy to read a simpletale of imagination in today's world of instant gratification.

Kudos toHeidbreder! ... Read more
