5-0 out of 5 stars This great book is very supportive of new readers.
Massive Mudge is much more than a mere mutt. He is a tail-wagger, toenail-chewer, moth-eater, and breaker of grandmother's things. Most importantly however, he is Henry's best friend. Beginning readers will feel right at home amongst the words and illustrations of Rylant's tender story about a boy and his bog on a visit to grandmother's house. Unobtrusively, Stevenson's iluustrations harmonize with Rylant's words. Where Rylant describes grandmother's "strange house with a dark yard," Stevenson contributes a double-page illustration depicting the darkness of the yard where a racoon, owl, and assorted bats live. The images buttress the comprehension and readability of challenging words without suffocating them in a sea of lines and color. For example, as Henry voices his anxieties about a bear, bobcat, moth, and mouse, simplistic cartoon-like pictures of each animal are nearby, offering visual clues. Chapters punctuate the book's action-filled but will not intimidate young readers, for the five-word lines within do not exceed 10per page. Lengthy words like "fingernails" appear repeatedly and readers can dissect protracted sentences into more manageable chunks with assistance from commas and brief lines: "Henry bit his fingernails, (new line) Mudge bit his toenails, (new line)and the car drove on." Inexperienced readers, reassured by the resolution of Henry's realistic woes of sleeping in a strange new setting, will see this young dog-lover and comic-book-reader as a contemporary and as a source of comfort. With confidence in their reading, children will become lost in this Henry and Mudge adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully fresh new stories about 'a boy and his dog.'
The characters of Henry, a little boy, and his big dog Mudge, a St. Bernard almost as big as Henry, appeal to my four-year-old. The easy-to-read, fun to listen to style that Cynthia Rylant brings to these stories is so welcoming that they invite you in like a warm and cozy home on a cold winter's night. These three short stories are just a few of the everyday adventures in the life of Henry and Mudge, told with catchy phrases and lots of character expressions to expose the loving friendship that they embrace. With bedtime a challenge for a pre-schooler (who has a wild immagination), we find this particular book a comforting and reassuring way to end a long day. We highly recommend this entire series, but expecially this selection. Our next favorite is "Puddle Trouble," but do read them all! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe this is out of print!
Out of all de Lint's books this is my favorite. I have a battered thrice owned copy that's been dropped in the river and worse...I still read it every year or so. Minda Sealy is plauged by dreams sent by the "Dream Master" who oft dream kills individuals. To escape destruction Minda goes yondering through the gate stones to other worlds to ultimantely fight the Dream Master and discover her own potential. I need another copy of this book! Mine is about worn out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first De Lint I read
The first De Lint I read was this book, I still have the copy. It is a great introductory to De Lint's style and the world(s) he creates. Full of Fey creatures, you are told the tale of one girl (Minda) who is sought by a dream master seeking to raise himself to the rank of the dark gods. There are the standard problems of pitfalls, though the twists of the plot are quite intriguing.
I highly recommend any book by Charles De Lint

5-0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good early work -
This book is meant for the teen crowd, and was bought originally for the teen fantasist in our household. It contains excellent themes for young women, but it has a broader appeal. Adults, too, will enjoy this quirky little imaginary-world fantasy, so unlike the Urban Fantasy that has made Charles de Lint such a popular guy.

Though it does betray itself as an early work, not so finely turned a tale perhaps as de Lint is capable of in his maturity, this book is really, really good. The heroine is sympathetic, believable, and complicated - like a real seventeen-year-old trying to puzzle out the hidden pattern of her life. Why would someone want to torment her in her dreams - and how will she keep the promise she made to help the fey being who helped her?

The universe turns out to be more complex and magical than she could have dreamed - and in the end, of course, she answers the riddles put to her and finds her place in the grand universe. It's triumphant - and it's fun - and it's really just a lovely gem of a book. It merits a place in your permanent collection. I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest books I have read!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved this book. It has a lot of great detail and keeps you on your toes. I loved it from the very start. You won't want to put the book down it is so good. If you like mystery, fantasy, magic, adventure and action, then this is your book. Minda or Talenyn, has to find a way to break Jan free of his stone bound from Ildran, the evil wizard. She makes many friends that are in many shapes, sizes, and species. I highly recommend this book to all people that like fantasy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars I didn't make it past chapter 5
Apparently, this is one of de Lint's earliest books and BOY does it show. I read The Dreaming Place and thought it was okay, so decided to try the other de Lint YA I had lying around. First of all, it's the same basic story as The Dreaming Place. In the back of the book de Lint admits he wrote the same story over and over again for a while. I must concur. And even though The Dreaming Place had it's bad moments, they weren't all crowded in front like in Wren.

The book opens in some sort of vaguely English/European small town in the vague past. Sometime after the middle ages, perhaps. But I cannot tell. The clumsy way de Lint introduces characters and sets up the conflict aren't really indicative of his later talents. And he has issues with how to use secondary characters effectively.

This is very clearly an early novel. I'm sure some kids will get some enjoyment out of it, but anyone over 16 or so should probably just move on to de Lint's later, adult novels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime book for little boys who love trains!
I bought this book for my (almost) 3 year old son. He is in love with it! It has become part of his bedtime ritual with my husband. He reads it, along with Chugga Chugga Choo Choo by Kevin Lewis every night. My son ask me to read them both to him every day. Thank you for such a wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will be a classic
What a delightful new book! This is a beautifully written book with a gentle lyrical quality that makes it a pleasure for the reader and the listener alike. As a mother of two toddlers, reading Good Night Engines is a smooth transition to bedtime. I save it for last and always hear "Again, Mommy" which is fine with me. The illustrations are lovely also. I just wish the publisher would release this in a board book which would hold up better to all the wear and tear our copy is likely to receive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lyrical writing will lull kids to sleep!
The lyrical and melodic writing in this book is very appealing to small children - not to mention the beautiful illustrations. It's an ideal book for helping to soothe 'revved' engines at bedtime!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Bed Time Book

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully helpful book !
This is a delightful book for little children that will help them make the transition from their busy play time to settling for the night in a tranquil and soothing manner. Reading this to their children will also help Mom and Dad leave the work-a-day world behind. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first
We discovered Bubba and Beau BEST FRIENDS and it is a great family read. This book offers the same great illustrations but the author strays from her snappy short simple sentances that made the first book so good. She is also trying to find a 'catch phrase' for the books and I think it is "Sister....", which is done twice in this book. Loved the first book - 5 stars! While my son likes this book (but not as much as the first one) we are hoping the third book will go back to short, snappy and more fun. ... Read more

Glashka is the only one in her village who can hear the voice of Narna, the whale. That gift leads her to great responsibility one day, when she discovers thousands of whales trapped in an inlet. The narrow route to the sea is rapidly icing over, and every day ice covers more of the open water the whales need to breathe. There seems to be no way out....This story, based on an actual event, tells of a dramatic rescue-a tale of bravery and faith and the power of music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is almost too good a book for kids....
Heard about this book on NPR and bought it for nephew cos I liked the idea and the story. What wasn't clearly told was just how incredibly rich Peter Sylvada's illustrations are... all oil paintings... they capture the beauty and harsh environment of Alaska, as well as slices of life from a native Alaskan village. Even southern dwellers can see some of why those who love it do so. The story is clearly and simply told, with a very likeable heroine, and gave me shivers at the end... but it was really the illustrations that blew me away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book
I loved this book as a first grader and still do 26 years later. I could relate to the grandpa in the story - he seemed identical to mine. I enjoyed Stevenson's imagination and creativity and still appreciate the life message "could be worse" as an adult. Having read this book helped me through some of life's greatest challenges knowing that no matter how bad things seem, it truly COULD BE WORSE!!! They're words to live by! I now share this book with my first graders. It truly inspires their own creativity and opens up their minds. They too have learned that things could always be worse!

5-0 out of 5 stars All time favorite
This book and "The Giving Tree" have always been 2 of my favorite children's books. The thing that makes them great is that the stories teach you valuable lessons at a very young age, that you never forget. I read this book in elementary school, and now at the age of 25 still think of it when things get bad, cuz they could ALWAYS be worse!!! My mom and I still refer to this book to this day, and now I'm buying it for my 5 year old nephew! I just hope he appreciates it as much as I do!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Could Be Worse
As a child, this was one of my favorite books. As an adult, working in a daycare, I became frustrated with the books available to me and the lack of imagination I saw in many of the children. I found a copy of this book in the library and began reading it to the children daily. It was not only an instant hit but in no time I began to hear stories from them of wild dreams and exciting fanticies. They were just as inspired as I had been at their age. This is truly a timeless and imaginative story with the unique ability to teach both optimism and creativity.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a book I HIGHLY recommend
This book was read to me in High School by a classmate and I have never forgotten this book. I have searched every where for it, since that day it was read and I have finally found it! (5 years later!) This is a GREAT book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Old fave.
This book has been one of my favorites for as long as I can remember. My Dad read it to me when I was younger, and whenever I read it now, it takes me back to my youth. Stevenson is a real master at unifying his words and illustrations. It's almost a whimsical book, but doesn't suffer from the treacly sweetness that bogs down so many childrens books. I can't think of another childrens book I like better. Unless it's one of Stevenson's other books, such as The Seaside Hotel. The guy's brilliant. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars His constant favorite
My son just turned one yr old last week and this book has been his favorite for the last three months. "Goodnight Moon," is alright, and "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" is a close second, but this one he loves. At first he would cuddle with me while I read it to him, but now that he is a little older he is determined to turn the pages himself. I have the paperback version and need to buy another copy as I've had to repair numerous pages while he learns how to turn paper pages. Poor book. I'd put it up until he's older, but he will look all over the living room for this one and then sit down in the middle of the floor and slowly "read" the book 2-3 times before he is ready for the next activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect lullaby
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book and song. The music is printed at the end - and it puts her right to sleep nearly every time. She sings the song whenever she is putting her animals to bed, and it is a lovely story! The illustrations are great for this age - I wholly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great songs, story, and illustrations.
This is one of a few books that get the "again, again" rating from my 3 year old. He loves the song and story and of course the animals. If is running too long its easy to skip a couple of animals and get to the end w/o compromising the story.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Bedtime story book.
My two year old loves Barnyard Lullaby but can not resist closing her eyes to sleep as I read the last two lines on every-other page: "Go to sleep, my sweetheart, Tomorrow is a brand-new day". 5-0 out of 5 stars Dramatize with your student musicians
What kid wouldn't love this book? In my music classroom, half of the kids play the stair climbing sound effects on the xylophones, while the others take on the roles of Mortimer, Mortimer's father, mother, brothers and sisters, and police. Lots of fun and I'll guarantee they'll understand the concepts of upward and downward melodic direction when you're done! Plan to laugh a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Music education
This book is great for helping music educators teach direction of pitch. I love to use it with a tone bell ladder or other instrument that actually shows the high and low pitches. The children LOVE to play up and down the ladder as Mortimer travels up and down the stairs. There are many giggles as we play. The children can certainly relate to the story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Is sooooo funny
Bing Bang rattle bing bang.... I'm gonna make my noise all day!!! It's so cute. My son loves it. He sings the silly song over and over...

3-0 out of 5 stars A book review by a 9 year old girl.
This book isn't the type of book where the beginning ties you into the story, but I CAN assure you that by the fourth page (last paragraph) you'll be chanting along with the toon of the song! (I was!) Well, I have my teacher to thank and you're probably wondering why right? Good question! I'm thanking her because she's the one who read it out loud to my whole class of 44 kids and I loved it. Just remember, Mortimer is a small, but strong, "Entertainer."

She was awesome, not only did she read and talk about her book but, she also did other stories about frogs and incorporated music. The program actively involved the students. The students and teachers loved the story time , and the book. The way she incorporated real facts about frogs with musical terms was great. The illustrations are excellent. The storyline along with the illustrations make this book a real keeper. If you have a chance to have Marianne come to your school or library you will be most pleased and provide your students or patrons with a rich experience. She will also sign books for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply delightful
I purchased this book for my grandchildren and they just love it! We read it over and over again. The story is fun, whimsical as well as educational. All children seem to love frogs, ponds and music and this book takes you into the night and makes you feel like part of a wonderful musical extravaganza. We especially enjoy the rhyming text and the illustrations are fantastic!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Night, Magic, and Music.....
"The rain has stopped./Night is coming./The pond awakes with/quiet humming. // Maestro frog hops to the mound/As night begins to fill with sound./Peepers peep pe-ep, peep, peep./They have had a good day's sleep..." Lit by fireflies and stars "...twinkling to the tune/As they dance around the moon..." the concert begins. Frogs of all shapes and sizes join together to make music in the marsh. These are the beautiful, wondrous sounds that begin quietly and slowly at dusk, and build, louder and faster, as the night stretches on towards dawn..... Marianne Berkes' inspiring, lyrical text is rich in imagery and magic and is filled with energy, rhythm, rhyme, and marvelous sound effects. Robert Noreika's evocative watercolor illustrations dazzle, and together word and art bring the marsh and its inhabitants to life. Part nature book, part music book, Marsh Music includes a glossary of musical terms and informative descriptions of the eleven types of frogs we meet in the "orchestra". This is a lovely and engaging picture book, perfect for bedtime reading, that youngsters 4-8 definitely shouldn't miss. "But now it's dawn./The stars are gone./Maestro puts down his baton. // That's all my friends./It's time to go./Tonight there'll be/another show."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
Berkes masterfully integrates music and nature in this entertaining story. Thoroughly educational on all types of amphibians, as well as musical terminology. Berkes's excellent word choices and rhythmic language engrosses the reader while the outstanding watercolor illustrations captivate the mind. Although the reading level states K - 3rd grade, this high content book can be enlightening to all ages. As a high school educator, I have recommended this book to environmental science and music teachers. Considering the ending, I eagerly anticipate a sequel to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marsh Music
It is evening time in the marsh and the rain has stopped. During the night the marsh comes alive in a symphony of singing frogs! Maestro frog jumps to the stage and the peepers and pig frogs, the leopard and wood frogs fill the night with song!
Children not only learn about frogs and nature but music theory as well!
In this delightful, rhyming book children thrill to the nightime orchestra Berkes creates so magically. It has a wonderful glossary in the back and Noreika's illustrastions are stunning.
A surefire hit for K through 3rd graders! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful bunny book
Rick Walton's 'So Many Bunnies...' book is simple and clever. It has already become one of my daughters' favorite books. The simple but multi-purpose story combined with the lovely detailed illustrations keep the girls finding new things every time it's read to them or by them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book that kids will want read over and over.
I loved reading it and my kids loved hearing it. The illustrations are delightful and full of fun and whimsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
This is one of my daughter's books that I don't mind reading over and over again. At four, she's memorized the story, and at bedtime I'll read the bunny's names ("1 was named Abel...") and she'll supply where they sleep ("...he slept on the table."). She loves the rhymes, and the rhythm is lovely and even--making it good for bedtime story reading! This has also led to a great game: when we're in the car or I need something to occupy her, I can give her the bunny's names, and she'll tell me where they sleep.

The illustrations are very nice, and I like that all the bunnies appear together with their Mom at the end; we enjoy looking for the various bunnies there.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars One that I'll keep with other treasures from baby-time
This large size book captivates with detailed, gloriously colored illustrations and a story my children love. Mama Bunny puts each of her 26 children to bed, each baby bunny named with a successive letter of the alphabet and corresponding number "1 was named Abel, he slept on the table. 2 was named Blair, she slept on the chair". My children have memorized the book and can "read" it with me -- it has helped me teach them numbers beyond 10 as well. My kids giggle with delight when I incorporate their names in the book and make up silly rhymes to go with it. This book will definitely go in my keepsake chest among our most precious memories of these early years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and Fun!
I love this book. I teach kindergarten in a public school and this book is a must read. The book reviews letters, numbers to 26, and rhyming words. Learning to identify words that rhyme are difficult for many kindergartners, but this book makes it easy, and fun. The flow of the language makes it natural for the kids to choral read with me. The pictures are wonderful, too. Definitely not too "cutesy" for the kindergarten set. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book
My little girl loves this book. She loves Winnie the Pooh and says his name over and over as we read this story. She loves to slide the little honeypots back and forth as we read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute and entertaining!
This is a great little book!! It has been one of my son's favorites since he was a couple months old. On the top of the book is a plastic strip, complete with 5 plastic honeypots that slide back and forth. Each time Pooh gets a honeypot in the book, you can slide a honeypot across the top. It's great for teaching both numbers and colors! My only complaint is that the plastic strip is red and one of the honeypots is also red, which makes it a bit hard to see. They really should have used a color for the plastic strip that is different from all the honeypots.

All-in-all, it's a VERY cute little book that has adorable pictures of Pooh and his friends, educational value in numbers and colors, and fun toys to keep the interest. Highly recommended!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A really good book for kids.
Although Disney did not invent Winnie the Pooh (these were originally written by A.A.Milne), Disney has managed to produce a book that is shocking in its complexity, yet vibrant in its attitude toward life. When we first encounter Pooh, it is at a moment of striving. The five honey pots, perhaps representing his lost youth, or the five stages of man, are tantalizingly out of his reach. Soon afterwards, a struggle ensues. Pooh reaches beyond himself, and in the company of his closest friends (Eyore, Piglet, and Tigger) he manages to attain one of the honeypots. His symbolic gluttony (perhaps a reference to today's materialistic society) is well described at the "four honeypot" stage. The story is nearing the peak of its arc when we find only three honey pots left "all in a row". The symbolism of the three remaining pots is clear. As we head towards the denumont of the story, there are two honey pots remaining. Pooh practically ravages the penultimate pot of honey in a shockingly violent display that troubled this reader for weeks. By the end, with one remaining honey pot, Pooh is faced with a decision - should he take the last honey pot, or should he leave it? We're left to a decision that will trouble some, amaze others, but will leave none disappointed. If you buy only one six-page book this year, make it this one. Oh, and my four month old son thinks this book is delicious. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous addition to your Sabuda collection
Once you have one of his pop-up books, you will be drawn willy-nilly to buy all of the rest. This is not his most sublime effort on two fronts. The art work is in the exact style of the original, so while it is stunning and beautiful, I think it is not as lovely as his absolutely original imaginings. A few of the pop-up effects such as the little baby changing to a pig face(found in one of the mini books within a book) don't work very well, since only the pig is visible unless you go thro contortions to peek inside before ever opening that page. The same with the scene of painting the roses red.

While a great deal of the original text has been abridged, only a couple of the nonsense rhymes that made the original unabridged alice one of my childhoods read aloud favorites has been included.

Overall, the pop up engineering is still stunning, to see Alice's face inside the White Rabbits home with her arms sticking out windows, and her feet out the chimney and front door, the mad hatters tea party, and of course, the very first telescopic view of her fall down the rabbit hole are not to be missed! My 3 1/2 year old sits thro 90% of the story just as long as he can enjoy the pop-ups again and again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Sabuda masterpiece.
As a huge fan of Sabuda's WIZARD OF OZ, I grabbed ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND as soon as I saw it in the store, and it didn't disappoint at all.

The book is similar in design to WIZARD OF OZ, has several eye-popping pages that literally jump out at you and contains a faithful abridgement of Lewis Carroll's classic text.

The first page, featuring the forest where Alice first encounters the White Rabbit, is glorious, and Sabuda has imagined a remarkable way to give readers a look "down the rabbit hole."

This one's as good as THE WIZARD OF OZ, and it's going to be a great gift for all my cousins this holiday season.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the MOTHER of all pop-up books EVER!
I've never written a review of any book before, but am compelled to do so now. (I'm not a very good writer!)

I've been collecting pop-ups for a long time, and this is the Pop-Up to End All Pop-Ups!

This book exceeds all my expectations of any Pop-Up. Innovative, top quality, surprise after surprise, includes full story, just superb!

I cannot give this book enough stars. If 5 is the highest, I give this book a 15! You will not be dissappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!
There is a REASON that reviewers of Robert Sabuda's "Alice in Wonderland" are AMAZED. This is NOT just another "pop-up book." THIS is a WORK OF ART!!

Robert Sabuda's work is MAGICAL as you literally peer down the rabbit hole. Another page shows Alice in the house; Alice at the tea party; the Cheshire Cat; the deck of cards....

This book can be great to show young babies as it will spark their curiosity, but you have to just have them look at it and keep it out of reach as young toddlers would probably rip the art work. If you know a young boy or girl (ages 4 and up) or a young teenager or anyone who appreciates illustrative art - this is the book to buy.

My mother bought this book for me plus one for her good friend and we both loved it!

Robert Sabuda's "Wizard of OZ" was great....this might be even better!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: A Pop-up book
Absolutely the best pop-up book I have ever seen. A collectible for sure. Not only do you have large pop-ups on each page, but you have smaller multiple ones on the pages, too!! Beautiful color and excitment for everyone, adults included!! ... Read more
