5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I am very pleased with this bible for my grand daughter. Even though it only recommends up to age 12and she is 14 .I think this is Bible is meant for teens as well. I was just looking it over and could hardly put it down.
Praise The Lord

5-0 out of 5 stars Entices Kids to Read It
I bought this bible for my 10-year-old nephew, who doesn't like to read and is always put off by thick books with few pictures. Because this bible is geared for young people and also has a provocative title, my nephew is more likely to open it up, or at least sit with me while we read it together. I like the approach this bible takes in presenting scripture as an "adventure" and it seems to attract my nephew as well. And, not insignificantly, this version is priced right too. I bought him the paperback edition thinking that I will get him a nice leather-bound bible when he is older and more prepared to take care of a finely bound copy. All in all, a very good bible for a young person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended by our Christian School
This is the Bible most used by students at our private school. Buying a Bible is part of their school supplies, and this one is perfect for many years of learning and enjoying!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Bible for children
I bought each of my children the Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV. My daughters read it every night. This bible is easy for kids to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for family devotions
My 11 year old son has this Bible and we use it to do our family devotions. There are 'Lets Live It' sections that point out a specific Bible passage and then ask some questions to solidify our understanding and make the Bible relevent to our lives today.

Other attractive qualities include "did you know?",with definitions of difficult terms, "words to remember" and "Bible times" all geared to increase undrestanding of God's word. There are also brightly colored pages with the ten commandments, 12 disciples and other important information. There are also maps in the back.

I would recommend it for anyone from 8-15 and parents like it too. ... Read more

From the Publisher

When the prime minister of Persia decides to destroy all the Jews throughout the kingdom, their fate seems to be sealed. Only one person stands in his way -- a young Jewish girl named Esther. Internationally known folklorist Diane Wolkstein brings to life the story of Esther, the compassionate queen who risked the wrath of a king to save her people from destruction. Award-winning illustrator Juan Wijngaard reflects this biblical heroine's majesty and humanity with his Jewel-like illustrations. Together, these two masters have created a picture book of rare beauty that honors Esther, whose courage and wisdom are celebrated the world over during the joyous feast of Purim. Ages 7 up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Esthers Story
Esther's Uncle Mordecai is the gate keeper. He raised Esther from a baby. My favorite part of the story is when Esther becomes queen of Persia. My favorite part of the story is when he laughed. When he was done laughing, he said "Esther, you are now queen of ersia". I like the book Esther because it is taken from the Bible. The comments are the same as in the Bible. If you really like the Bible story, I insist that you read this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Esther
I like this book of Esther because it is all what God knew what was going to happen. My first favorite part is when the king crowned Esther Queen of Persia. That was God's plan. Later, a man named Haman wanted all the Jews killed. God wanted Esther to save her people. My second favorite part is when Esther shows up to the king uninvited. Esther had the courage to do that. But, will Esther save her people in time? Read this book to find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars esther's story
Esther was an ok book. It is easy to read. It was about
this girl named Esther and how she became a queen and
saved her people. I recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Esther
I've always loved the biblical heroine Esther. She dares to take risks and thus makes a difference. This beautiful book portrays her vividly and in a sympathetic way (not as a larger than life character).

In lovely but simple language Diane Wolkstein tells how Esther is chosen by the King of Persia to be his queen. And how she will defy the evil Haman to save her people. Thus the reader gets familiar with the origins of what the Jews celebrate as Purim.

The illlustrations are absolutely breathtaking and Mr. Wijngaard certainly did a thorough research for it.

Really a treasure in one's library!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must reading" for any Jewish girl
I have read dozens of Jewish books to my kids, and this stands out as one of the few that I am going to keep for THEIR kids. The reason? It portrays Esther as a real person that girls can truly identify with, while not straying from the honest Torah understanding of the holiday. Additionally, the combination of realistic text (presented in the form of Esther's diary) and stunning illustrations make this book a literary treat. I wish this author-illustrator team would get together to create stories about all the Biblical heroines! ... Read more

For children, this is a super way to introduce Jesus' life and important events. It keeps their interest on every page as they must find important symbols of Christianity. 5-0 out of 5 stars Parents will be interested in this one!
I was moved to write this review after reading this wonderful book with my three daughters, ages 4 to 12. As a parent, I am always looking for books that stimulate discussion as well as entertain. Ross' stories truly bring these heroines to life, and Teis' illustrations are superb. Together, they create a vivid world that brings ancient lessons of courage, hope, and inner strength to modern times. The author thoughtfully provides introductions to each story which help to set them in cultural and historical context. I hope this beautiful book meets much success, it certainly deserves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
I just got this book for my birthday. I am 11 years old. I liked this book a lot because the women in the book seemed real to me. You never really hear about what was going on for the women in the Bible. I always wondered! This book brings them to life and helps me understand what it was like for them back then. There are a lot of beautiful illustrations too. They are so beautiful! I like to draw and the book gave me a lot of inspiration to become an artist. ... Read more

Book Description

SUPER "HEROES" OF THE BIBLE

Whether battling lions, slaying giants, or leading armies, these young rebels for God will show you how to live large and stand tall.

Sometimes you just need to rebel...as long as you're rebelling against the right things. In your school, with your friends, in your free time there's a lot of people making the wrong choices. God's calling you to go against the grain of what the world teaches and be singled out for resisting the temptations of teenage life. It's not easy, though, and you might feel like you're alone. In Bad to the Bone, Miles McPherson shows you that young men and women have been God's rebels for thousands of years and he introduces you to some young Bible heroes whose example will help you live a life of faith.

Created to be used in Bible studies, youth groups, or in your daily devotions, Bad to the Bone spotlights thirteen young men and women from the Bible and gives you the inside scoop on the admirable trait that made their lives of devotion so different. Chapters include:

Be Disciplined Like Daniel Be Worthy Like Esther Be a Dreamer Like Joseph

Bible readings, memory verses, devotional thoughts, and interaction questions provide daily chances to go in-depth into the world of these young Bible heroes. Weekends are spent exploring the lives of some not-so-great girls and guys from the Bible. These "Weekend Warriors" show you the types of behavior you should try to avoid.

Today, you are being asked, and sometimes forced, to conform and dull down rather than live large as disciples of Jesus. God, though, is on the lookout for young people who are not afraid of standing strong and tall in what they know is right. For generations he has found young girls and guys willing to rebel against the ways of the world. Now, it's your time and your turn. It's time to get "bad to the bone."

5-0 out of 5 stars Of interest to a wide range of teenagers.
I teach a Sunday School class for teenagers from ages 13 to 19, which is challenging because it is so hard to find material of interest to a group with such a wide range of ages. This book worked beautifully for us. There is a good balance of humor and seriousness in it and the personal life stories are interesting enough to keep teens awake early on a Sunday morning. It also required little time on my part to prepare for each week's lesson.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best yet!
This book is one of the best books for a total of the best 15bible heroes of the bible. I really loved the book. I would definetly tell all of my friends about this book if they had not already read it. It is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad to the Bone is good for the soul
This book is very good for all teenagers. It is a 13 week bible study that is broken down daily. The chapters are short to keep a teens wandering interest, but packed with a lot of usable information. If you are a youth leader, or just want a bible study for your teen, look no further. ... Charles Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord around the same time he was finishing upDavid Copperfield, but to readers raised on a diet of Dickensian wit and indignation, his rendering of Jesus' life may come as something of a surprise. You won't find even the shadow of a Micawber or a Mrs. Gamp anywhere in this brief volume; no Pecksniffs, Podsnaps, or Mulberries, either. Instead, Dickens approaches his subject with simple reverence, retelling the New Testament in a manner suitable for his own young children--who were, in fact, his only intended audience. Indeed, he strictly forbade publication of The Life during his lifetime and begged his sister to make sure that they "would never even hand the manuscript, or a copy of it, to anyone to take out of the house."It wasn't until the death of Dickens's last living son that the manuscript was finally published in 1934. Though he left his trademark comedy behind, Dickens's liberal social conscience is still evident in what he chooses to emphasize about Jesus: "My Dear Children," he begins,

I am very anxious that you should know something about the History of Jesus Christ. For everybody ought to know about Him. No one ever lived who was so good, so kind, so gentle, and so sorry for all people who did wrong, or were in any way ill or miserable, as He was.
This is a simple, straightforward account of Jesus' life and teachings, with an occasional touch of whimsy: "You never saw a locust, because they belong to that country near Jerusalem, which is a great way off. So do camels, but I think you have seen a camel. At all events, they are brought over here, sometimes; and if you would like to see one, I will show you one." Occasionally, Victorian attitudes and prejudices creep through--Dickens writes that the Jewish Sabbath was Sunday, that Jews were "very ignorant and passionate," and also that "they were very proud, and believed that no people were good but themselves." Fortunately, such comments are few and far between, and for the most part the author focuses on the miracles Jesus performed and on the lessons in charity, forgiveness, and compassion that Christians can take away from them. This may not be among the greatest of Charles Dickens's literary accomplishments, but it is certainly one of his most heartfelt. --Sheila Bright ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Side of a Genius
"[A Christmas Carol] is Dickens's widely acclaimed masterpiece of Christmas. But his The Life of Our Lord, written in a very personal way, without adornment or flights of fancy, and written for the children he loved, carries with it not only a beautiful narrative but a compelling admonition: 'Remember!--It is Christianity TO DO GOOD always--even to those who do evil to us.'"

"Such is the simple telling of a beloved author. In his time and during the generations that have followed, his great novels have been read by millions upon millions. But his story of Jesus' life, written with Dickens's own pen, and without editing of any kind, was for 85 years a family treasure and secret. Printed with all of the editorial mistakes of the original writing, it has delighted many others beyond his family."

President Hinckley, Ensign, December 1994

I have heard Pres. Hinckley, world leader of the Church of JEsus Christ of Latter-day Saints, talk about this book, and believing that there is some merit in reading the same books that the president of the Church reads, I picked it up.

This book may be considered a follow-up to his immortal classic "A Christmas Carol," where, instead of an allegory dealing with three spirits working on the Scrooge-of-all-Scrooges, he retells the story of the life of our Lord.

The book was geared for his children, so it is a quite easy read. Having read "A Tale of Two Cities," "Hard Times," and "A Christmas Carol," I was impressed with Dickens's flexibility. In fact, it is almost as if we are reading a transcript of a fireside chat. So this book is very readable for anyone of any age. It would be an ideal gift for a child between five and ten years old, or helpful to someone with a learning/reading disability. You could conceivably kill two Goliaths with one stone: get them familiar with the life of the Savior AND expose them to great literature!

The only drawback with the book is the theology, but that is understandable since we are of different faiths. Dickens focuses mainly on the ethical aspects of Christ's life, which is good, but incomplete. Another presdeint of the Church of Jesus Christ, President Howard W. Hunter, once gave a talk called, "Ethics Alone is not Sufficient." If you remember in "A Christmas Carol," Scrooge makes a conversion to ethical ideal, but not a conversion to Christ. He is going in the right direction, but not far enough. But it is a great book nonetheless.

The cover is stellar! It looks as important as its contents. The internal organizing and lay are also up to the stature of the author. It is nice to see that books are returning to their former glory of being both functional and beautiful. It would makes a great gift book, or a beautiful addition to any Postum table.

This book had been submerged for a long time due to Dickens's desire to keep his beliefs uncommercialized. I am glad that his estate has published this book, so we see the complete man.

3-0 out of 5 stars A sweet little book
Though not entirely scripturally acurate, this is a nice little book. Read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John first so that you can catch the errors in Dickens story before you read it to your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dickens as a dad
This is a wonderful summary of the Gospels by Charles Dickens. Basically he tells the story with a few of his own instructive comments inserted for the benefit of his children's benefit. It was never pulished in his lifetime and he never really intended for it to be published and in part because of this it is quite different from his other works. It is a easy and quick read (very different for his other works). The reader is also given great insight into the character of Charles Dickens particularly his love for the Savior and his children. The work is both touching and warm hearted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tender treasure
This slight book is Charles Dickens' written interpertation of the Gospels, a gift ment for his children. It was only to be published after his death. In the retelling of Christ's life Dickens gives his children the most precious gift...his testimony. This is a treasure of a book,a witness to the beliefs Dickens held dear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sincere Sweetness
This book is so different from Dicken's other works. It is a simple, but beautiful testimony of faith written by a father to young children. It is a book that we hope to make part of our family Christmas traditions and one that anyone who loves Christmas will treasure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll have to wrestle this one out of your kids' hands...
The artwork will draw your children into the book and the time spent searching through the pictures for hidden images will pay off as your children learn about the world into which Jesus was born. The book focuses on what Jesus and his friends might have been taught by their parents about their heritage and their God. Your kids will have fun searching for items relating to each picture's biblical theme as well as the ten important items that are found again and again throughout the book. And you'll find it painless to read this book with or to your child(ren). The illustrator has incorporated many humorous visuals to keep adults chuckling. The author has provided helpful "parents' guides" to make talking with your children about the important lessons in the bible easy. Before you know it, you and your kids will have learned a great deal about the Old Testament. The National Catholic Press named this 2nd book in the "Can You Find?" series its top children's book of the year (1999) as it did "Can You Find Jesus?" in 1997. This is a great gift for parents, grandparents, godparents and adult family friends to give youngsters whose spiritual development they care about. It's a sure bet to become one of those books your kids save to share with their kids... ... Read more

Book Description

Building on the success of A Street Through Time, The Life of Jesus contains brilliantly illustrated, evocatively retold stories revealing how Jesus' message reached his followers through preaching, healing, forgiveness, and miracles. Beginning with his birth in Bethlehem, The Life of Jesus charts all of the major events of Jesus' life and ministry, covering 26 key stories, from the Sermon on the Mount to the Last Supper. Biblical quotations link the scenes directly to the Bible, and each story is accompanied by beautifully detailed panoramas, bringing the people and lands of Jesus' time to life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible quotes frame each page
With surprisingly little preaching, this biographical picture book story of the life of Jesus Christ presents the chronological account of all the major events of his life and ministry. Fourteen chapters, an introduction and index take an instructional, scholarly approach to teaching children age eight and up. Each chapter is beautifully illustrated, clearly outlined, and presented in an easy-to-read narrative. Bible quotes frame each page, and corresponding New Testament chapters are listed following each story, to encourage further reading. In all, 26 stories are covered, including Jesus' birth in a manger, the sermon on the mount, the feeding of five thousand, calming of the storm, the parable of the good Samaritan, the Lord's supper, the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. The final "People of the Bible" chapter gives a one-paragraph biography of 27 people who appear in the New Testament and are featured in the story of Jesus. Unlike most authoritative non-fiction books published by Dorling Kindersley Publishing - including their "Eyewitness Books" series with titles on Christianity and Judaism -- this book presents religious beliefs as fact, never questioning the authenticity of such mystical issues as healing the dying, turning water into wine, and so on, thereby treading a fine line between fact and faith. The book's no-nonsense approach, however, is refreshing, and its over-sized format is impressive, making it attractive to Christian families as well as young non-Christians studying comparative religions. ...
