5-0 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect Penguins
This Board Book is beautiful colour glossy photographs of busy penguins, doing what penguins do, like:

penguins splashing

penguins dashing

penguins sliding

penguins diving

penguins drooping

(and the anti - Freudian)

penguins pooping.

It's great fun in the Tundra for all ages! Reviewed by TundraVision, Amazon reviewer

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs - very engaging
This book was highly recommended to me by a clerk at a small children's bookstore who told me that for some reason toddlers seem to find it very captivating. I bought it for my daughter for her first birthday, and she loves it. The photographs are beautiful and there's something about the penguins that seems to really grab my daughter's attention. At 14 months she seeks out this book and will "read" it to herself. I agree with the reviewer below who said that the "penguins pooping" page is a real attention-grabber for the toilet training set, and though it could be gross, something about the fact that it's a penguin who's pooping is strangely charming and humorous (if you can stomach that type of thing!). Overall five stars for a book that my daughter and I both love - a great thing for a parent who has to read it over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging book for any toddler
"Busy Penguins" is one of my 18-month-old daughter's favorite books. The photographs are incredible, and the text has a gentle rhythm that she finds engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful board book!
The fascinating photos and playful text will surely make your kid smile as they get a closer look at penguins doing various things. Penguins are so cool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos
This book combines very good photos of penguins with action rhymes. Simple text with depictive photos. And while most civilised adults will say "Yuck!" at the Penguins Pooping page, it will very likely fascinate the toddler for whom that is a very important part of his life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for preschoolers
One in a series of stories about Daisy the little duck, Quack, Daisy, Quack is a story of what happens when Daisy gets separated from her Mama during an outing at the pond. This is a softly painted picture book even younger preschoolers like to read along to. Readers get a sense of how scared Daisy feels when she realizes she can't find Mama, and will cheer Daisy on when she finally quacks loud enough to call Mama's attention over all the noise of the rest of the ducks in the pond. At the end of the story, we see Daisy and baby brother Pip back in the family garden taking a nap near Mama and Aunt Lily. Preschoolers will enjoy the many opportunities to shout and quack like noisy ducks, and will love quacking a loud 'Mama!' during the story. I especially like how Daisy is able to solve the problem of losing Mama by herself and how we see how comforted she is when she's back home safe and sound. The quirky, goofy little duckling is very endearing and seems to epitomize every preschooler's desire to wander off from time to time. ... Read more

What is it like to live in a tiny polar haven for two months? To paint penguins outdoors in freezing weather? To be flipper-slapped by a bird whose wings are powerful enough to propel it swiftly through frigid waters? To look into the oddly expressive eyes of a penguin chick? With charming watercolors and intriguing journal entries, this book inspires our curiosity. Sophie Webb gives readers a vivid, frank, firsthand account of what it is like to spend a season in a land not yet affected by people, yet populated for centuries by true dwellers of the Antarctic — the fearless, round-bellied, pink-footed, gliding, diving, utterly adept Adélie penguins. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sophie's well illustrated penguin expedition
Sophie Webb has applied her wonderful drawings to a travel log of her trip to the Cape Royds penguin colony on Ross Island, Antactica. Her drawings of the penguins in all their various activities are wonderfully accurate and delightful. She also recounts her experiences traveling to Antactica in a way that makes it very real -- I should know, I was there with her! The book is very well suited to kids as well as adults. However, note that she is quite truthful about some of the various fates that can await less fortunate penguins! Sophie has done a great job with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute and yellow and fuzzy
Little Quack tells the story of five little ducklings, and a mother duck who is teaching them to swim. While Widdle, Waddle, Piddle and Puddle take to the water pretty easily, Little Quack is apprehensive. Can this ducking runt find the courage to take the plunge? The brilliant illustrations by Derek Anderson are what really makes this simple story precious. These little ducklings have amazing capacity for expression. Each pose is so perfect, you can tell just what the little ducklings are thinking and feeling. The colors are wonderful, and the style graceful yet simple. Between these terrific paintings and the adorable Quack-u-lator feature on the bottom of the pages, this book is too cute not to own. With the help of this book, your pre-schooler can splash right into addition, making Little Quack not only cute, but useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ducky Fun.....
"Mama Duck had five little ducklings, Widdle, Waddle, Piddle, Puddle, and Little Quack. They all lived together in a nice, soft nest. But even Mama's littlest duckling was not so little anymore. "It's time to leave the nest," she said one day..." And that means it's time to learn to swim and take that first dip in the pond. All the little ducklings are very anxious, especially Little Quack. But one by one, with a lot of encouragement from Mama, they conquer their fear and take the plunge..... Lauren Thompson's simple, repetitive text is engaging and begs to be read aloud and shared. But it's Derek Anderson's exuberant and playful illustrations that really make this picture book a stand-out. Each large, dazzling spread is filled with bold color, marvelous facial expressions, eye-catching detail, and lots of humor, that makes this a perfect selection for story time. An inventive Quack-U-Lator running along the bottom of each page introduces counting and addition, and just adds to the fun. Little Quack is a delightful, interactive, preschool crowd pleaser that's sure to become an often requested, instant favorite both at school and at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book everyone will enjoy!
The illustrations are wonderful. My 13-month-old loves to look at the pictures. I enjoy them, too, which makes this one of our favorite books. Also, since this book incorporates counting and addition, it will be a book we will keep reading as my son gets older.

3-0 out of 5 stars Freddy the Moralist
In 1944, Freddy went up against that violent young lout, Horace Winch, and taught him to be a weekend painter (in "Freddy and Mr. Camphor"). But that wasn't enough! In "Freddy and the Popinjay," published the next year, he's out to reform the rock-slinging thug, Jimmy Witherspoon, and his tight-fisted father. The title of this one could have been changed to "Freddy the Moralist."

If you get past the unusually overt uplift, "Freddy and the Popinjay" contains much pleasant humor at the Bean Farm and environs, as well as a family of dangerous wildcats (who may also be misunderstood).

Interestingly to students of the Bean mysteries, the animals spend some time in this one waxing nostalgic over the days when those fine lads Biram and Adoniram were with them, while giving no clue as to where they have gone.

When Ella and Everett disappeared from the series, they left not a wrack behind. Adoniram, however, left his bathing trunks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Near the top of my Favorite Freddies list
I don't recall reading Popinjay when I first discovered Freddy back in 1960 (or thereabouts), but I've just read the new Overlook Press 2001 reprint. This story features the familiar, lovable Freddy characters--and a few new ones--portraying a message that we all need to remember these days: Don't judge people by appearances.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Popinjay Goeth Before the Fall
This book was written just as Walter R. Brooks was hitting his stride as a writer, and is one of the better Freddy books. A robin friend of Freddy's needs glasses, and from there the story gets wilder. The book is great fun and, as in all the Freddy books, has some lessons to impart to the reader, one of them being that conceit is not only a vice, but a rather silly one. This lesson is taught, as always, without a preachy tone intruding on the story. ... Read more

"Somewhere in the Italian hills, a homing pigeon is released. She soars quickly and follows an old road, which (of course) leads to Rome." So begins Caldecott Medal-winning artist David Macaulay's visually festive journey that tracks the whimsical flight of a homing pigeon through the archways, over the terra-cotta rooftops, and between the columns of this most ancient and vibrant city: "Instead of traveling directly to her destination, which is standard pigeon procedure, she decides to take the scenic route." Macaulay's angle of vision pans back and forth between the pigeon's-eye view and that of a roaming cinematographer. The effect is a kaleidoscope of whirling, swooping, dizzying images that must resemble flight itself. Macaulay's intricately crosshatched pen-and-ink images of Rome--with its ancient amphitheater, Colosseum, Temple of Hercules, elaborate fountains, and bustling cafes (with a feast of crumbs for a travel-weary pigeon)--provide a dazzling display of architectural finery. We are so swept up in the homing pigeon's divergent path--marked on the black-and-white vistas by a thin red line--that we momentarily forget she has a task at talon. All is explained in the uplifting one-word message joyfully delivered by the pigeon to the sketch artist (Macaulay himself?) shown at work in the last scene of the book. Rome Antics concludes with an aerial map of the city, marked with the pigeon's flight path. Roman sites from the Arch of Constantine to the Pantheon are briefly described as well. This lovely visual serenade to Rome is a delight for anyone who could fall in love with such a city as this. (All ages) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, simple story, must-have for Rome fans
This book is a trip through Roma from a pigeon's point of view. The pigeon flies around, through, over and past many of Rome's historical landmarks, and a brief section in back describes their history and significance.

I checked this out of the library to read with my 5 year old after I went to Rome last year, and bought a copy for myself, just to enjoy the pictures and the memories they bring! The Chiesa de San Ignazio (Church of St. Ignatius) is an especial favorite, as my choir performed there to a "standing room only" crowd! Quite a feat for an amateur choir on their first overseas tour!

The pen and ink sketches, the snippets of history, and the wonderful way they evoke the charisma of Rome make this a great addition to any child's or adult's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect engagement gift!
Share David MacAuley's obviously personal portrait of Rome. It's a portrait in the most obvious sense: lovingly detailed drawings of Rome's greatest architecture captured from MacAuley's witty and often weird perspective. But, through the drawings and the wonderful conceit, you see that this little book is also a personal exploration of a city that touches the heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Rome Antics" for those in love with Rome and otherwise.
This is the finest illustrated gift book for the Romaphiles that you love!! Get it now and make a gift to the one you love. It will be appreciated for years to come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Early Childhood students.
This book is great for showing how chicks and ducks are the same, and different, in an entertaining way. It is an emergent reader book, that uses repetition and predictability to help young readers along. My Kindergarten class really loves this book. I've seen it in Big Book format, but can't find it here. Oh, well! Buy this one if you don't have it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A lesson to learn by imitating!
I really enjoyed reading this story to my students and working with activities that went along with the book. For example miming the action words in the book, drawing, and writing a book report. This is wonderful story about a chick and a duck who hatch at the same time and become friends. The chick imitates the duck until the duck goes for a swim. However, the chick attempts to swim, but can't and is rescued by the duck. The Chick realizes that it is ok not to do everything the duck does. The duck can go for a swim with out him. The moral of the story, sometimes it is perfectly ok to imitate, but at other times be yourself, do your own things and have your own ideas.

Ashleigh favorite part was when the chick sank. It makes me feel like I can save my friend. Ashley liked the part when the duckling dug a hole. I liked the illustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and Fun
This terrific book says alot with few words. The watercolor pictures are beautiful, and the text is carefully written. We adore the picture of the wolf carrying a 100 pound cake to fatten up the chicken before he eats her. The ending is so sweet it leaves you feeling like life is great. I consider this one of my favorite read alouds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Exciting & Funny
This book is a great book for 3-7 year-olds. It is story that little ones will find interesting and funny, combined with good illustrations, and can be read in under 5 minutes!

Children will follow the Wolf as he searches the forest for a delicious chicken. Before seizing a chicken he finds, he decides to fatten her up first. So he spends the next few nights in the kitchen baking goodies and anomymously leaving them on her porch for the chicken to eat. Finally he decides to set out for his chicken dinner, only to discover that the Chicken had many, many children that had been eating the food the wolf had left. All of them thanked "Uncle Wolf" with a hundred kisses, and the wolf, in the end, grows attached to the little chicks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read-aloud for preschoolers!
I highly recommend this to anyone reading aloud to preschoolers. I have read it to countless groups of young children over the past ten years, in many different situations, and it never fails as a crowd-pleaser. Keiko Kasza's other picture books also work like magic with the youngest listeners. Children and adults alike enjoy her gentle humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming wolf just can't be a bad guy.
I loved this book! My son received it for his 4th birthday, and I enjoy it as much, or more, than he does. The charming wolf, a wanna-be bad guy, goes to extraordinary measures to fatten up a chicken for dinner. An appealing aspect to this book is that the characters are expressive, good- natured, and non-threatening. A very young child can enjoy this book without fear of "scary" parts. I would like to get in touch with the author to inquire about purchasing prints of some of the illustrations, as my son and daughter are so taken with the pictures. I have purchased this book for other children, and look forward to seeing more of Keiko Kasza's work. (If anyone knows how I can reach the author, I would appreciate your input.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Multicultural Thanksgiving story
The narrator's dad is a long-haul truck driver who sends a live baby turkey to his son, who lives in New York City with his grandparents. Along with the turkey, he sends instructions to fatten him up for Thanksgiving Day. But by the time dad returns for Thanksgiving, the bird has become a pet, not a meal. The story is quite fun, with just a little tension, but no scary bits. There is a sprinkling of Spanish words throughout the text, and a bilingual glossary at the end of the book. Altogether, the book has about 1300 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars N.Y. Hispanic family has turkey for dinner!
I use this book with at-risk 2nd and 3rd grade readers. It is wonderfully multicultural, and involves a multigenerational,Hispanic family living in New York city at Thanksgiving time. Miguel's father is a long-haul trucker who sends him a live turkey to raise for Thanksgiving dinner. Papa will be home to share it with the family. The predictable happens: boy and turkey fall in love. Miguel tries to reach his father in time to spare Gracias' life. At this point, I have my students write a letter, too, as if it were their pet they wanted to keep. The suspense builds until Gracias follows Miguel to church, and gets blessed by the priest! The grandparents are wonderfully supportive, and Tia Rosa is predictably pessimistic. Gracias comes to Thanksgiving dinner, but not in the way expected. My students make written predictions about how Papa will react, and what will happen next. This book is written by Joy Cowley, who writes many of the books we use in the Reading Recovery Program for at-risk readers in the United States. I really love it as it inspires poor writers to write, and gets everyone involved in the enfolding drama. ... Read more

Book Description

When a big bad wolf moves to town, it would seem that the chicken sisters' fate is sealed, but in a clever twist, the eccentric trio saves the day. The unwitting wolf proves to be no match for the good intentions of these itching-sweater-knitting, off-key-singing, burnt-cookie-baking neighbors. Here's one wolf that's off to live with his mother!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute story . . .
This is a cute story that my daughter enjoys reading. The illustrations are very nice. For adults, it may seem odd that the the characters are intolerant of the wolf's past (he is now old and harmless) and run him out of town, but this will be lost on kids. It is a humorous story, our 2 year old understands some of the humor, while other parts are geared toward the adult funny bone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's the sequel??!!
We have several great books of Laura Numeroff's in our library, yet I must say this is THE favorite of our 3 yr old boy, our 8 yr old girl and myself! These sisters are nutty - but darn smart - you will fall in love with them at your first reading. And believe me - you will be pulling this book out again and again to read. The illustrations are darling too. A true gem of a book for all!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!
After reading the quirky synopsis of this book I bought it for my daughter and have been reading it to her since her birth 11 months ago. She loves it! The illustrations are colorful and lush, the animals depicted are realistic without being scary. The story is perfect, not too long and kind to sleep-deprived parents (no tongue twisters!). It is cute, whimsical and snappy. This is a book you won't mind reading again and again and again...

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-confident sisters bring laughs for adults and kids
This is a great book, as the official reviews agree. I counsel parents who worry their kids won't feel confident or will be the target of teasing or gossip (because they were conceived w/ some extra medical help, for ex. - see my book Helping the Stork). These sisters have such joy and enthusiasm, undampened by their grumpy neighbors, and they win over everyone. Carol Frost Vercollone ... Read more

Judy Sierra, author of the well-loved picture books Counting Crocodiles and The House That Drac Built, delights young readers again, this time paying poetic tribute to the distinguished-yet-waddling emperor penguin of icy Antarctica. Comical, cartoonish paintings by accomplished illustrators (and penguin lovers) Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey combined with Sierra's lively poems will have your favorite kids giggling and, perhaps, wanting a pet baby penguin of their own!

Youngsters will dive, swim, and glide through playful poems such as "My Father's Feet," which begins: "To keep myself up on the ice,/I find my father's feet are nice./I snuggle in his belly fluff,/And that's how I stay warm enough." "Penguin's Swim" starts, "Ten little penguins all in a line--/One jumps in and now there are nine./Nine little penguins, how they hesitate--/One tumbles in and now there are eight." Sierra's poems are based on the lives and habits of emperor penguins, so your kids will learn about life in the Antarctic from a penguin's perspective. This book is as irresistible as the fish-slurping, huddling, fidgeting, waddling, ker-plopping penguins themselves! (Ideal for reading aloud, but perfect for early readers ages 4 to 8.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Antarctic Antics a book of Penguin Poems Review
Antarctic Antics is a wonderful book to read to children if they love to hear about animals. This book is all about penguins and their daily activities. The author, Judy Sierra did an excellent job in writing cute poems about the artic animal. The illustrations were done by Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey. The pictures relate well with the pomes as they are written within the illustrations. The illustrations are full pages and add excellent color to the page as the poem is enjoyed. The poems in this book create a sense of smell, taste, sight, and touch. The poems are about what goes on in a penguins life adn the child can relate to their senses as the poems are read to them. One poem called Regurgitate is about a baby penguin. He wants his dad to regurgitate his food; this poem is liked by children. This has the qualities of taste, sight, smell, and touch. There are many more great poems to read to children that they will enjoy. This book has an excellent collection of poems that children will enjoy. The poems mee the requirements fo children poetry. The book has a way ar teaching the students about penguins and their ways of life. The illustrations done by Aruego and Dewey add a signifiacant amount to the poems as they are read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poems About Penguins.
First of all, I love this book because I love penguins. However, as a piece of children's literature, it's so much more. This is an excellent example of how literature (poetry) and science can go hand and hand. There are some poems in this book that seem written just for fun, (e.g. "Be My Penguin"). However, most of the poems in this book are written about and around actual behaviors that penguins exhibit: from regurgiating their food to feed the young ("Regurgitate") to the motherly instincts of father penguins ("A Hatchling's Song" and "My Father's Feet") to poetic riddles about penguin predators (sea lion, killer whale). The book is charming, easy to read, and full of delightful penguin illustrations. A great gift for any child interesting in science or literature or anyone who (like me) just loves penguins.

5-0 out of 5 stars Antarctic Antics
I purchased the CD because of the good reviews on the book. My seven year old loved the CD and I was surprised to find myself singing along. He's been learning about penguins at school - this is definitely a good way to reinforce what he has learned while having lots of fun in the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for kids of all ages
An adult friend recommended this book to me (also an adult), figuring that I'd enjoy anything containing a poem titled "Regurgitate." She was right, and I found the rest of the book well-written and well-crafted, full of similar humor and the kind of realism-in-viewpoint that is sometimes (too often) lacking in books that feature animals. The illustrations are also excellent. I'm told that children do enjoy this book, but it's also captivated many of my adult friends ... including one woman to whom I presented a copy for her 55th birthday. Quality shines through any good work, and that's definitely true of "Antarctic Antics."

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming
The book was very entertaining for my five year old granddaughter, making her laugh as well as learn about penguins.

The art work was as well done as the writing. I recommend it to anyone who is sly enough to teach through laughter and rhyme. ... Read more
