5-0 out of 5 stars Great to Sing and Read
I reconnected with this song after hearing John Denver sing it on a recently released 'Muppet Show' DVD. It's a song that I have enjoyed sharing with my 2 year old daughter and the book brings the lyrics to life. The illustrations are beautiful and well reflect the lyrics. The book is a staple must-read for us throughout the day and is essential at bedtime (Mom, sing the garden song again!). Several children's cds have this recording by other artists, but my favorite by far is the John Denver.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Cuckoo Child
I thaught this book would be good because it had a funny name. It was good too. The cuckoo child is about a boy who loves birds of any kind. Helives with his Mom, Dad, and sister. his name is Jack Daw. In the begining Jack sees some chickens hatch. Then he ascked his father when he could have some birds of his own. His father said when he was 5. On his 5th he got budgerigars. For his 6th he got bantams. For his 7th, ducks. Then his 8th birthday came and he got geese. He named them Lidia and Wilfred. The next day Jack was going on a field trip with his class to the Wildlife Park. When they got there, there were more birds than he had expected. And then he saw it; the great male ostrich. It was amazing. His teacher came back for him and they cept going. Then they came to a sign that siad:Ostriches->. His teacher read the signthat told about ostriches. Jack asked his teacher if they would see any eggs. A man "ansered you will see lots". It was a park ranger. He showed them some eggs. After the park ranger showed them the eggs Jack sneaks an egg into his back. What happens to the egg? Read this book and find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kid and the Bird
I read this book because it was my second choice, and because everyone else was reading it.

Jack Daw loves birds, any types of birds. One day Jack and his class went a field trip to the local zoo.He finds himself looking straight at a nine foot tall, 345 pound ostrich! Then Jack comes up with a plan.Jack steals an extra ostrich egg that's about to be fed to a snake! Then he brings the ostrich egg back home to his family's farm.

If you want to find out what happens to the ostrich egg, and you like birds, read this book! It's very interesting!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Odd Bird
I read this book because our teacher said that if we put a book review on Amazon.com we could keep the book.So why not? Before I read the book I thought it was about a child that was crazy about something,I didn't even think that it was about birds. The main characters in this story are Jack,Oliver,Lydia, and Wilfred.Jack has a way with birds and he is always with them he loves them so much that he gets them for birthday presents. One day his class goes on a field trip and he gets something if you what to find out read this book. This book is very interesting i think it is a very good bookfor all ages it is only a 127 page book too! This is one of those books that you take time out of your day to read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Cute
the book itself is a little hard to follow. I do like that it portrays the aspect that you can learn things new and just not what you are taught since you are born.

5-0 out of 5 stars the story and art had a huge impact.
While the age range indicated on the entry here indicates4-7 years, the story and art had a huge impact on my two year old. On a more adult level it reminded us that no matter how much we teach them, children may have toleave home to learn the most important things about themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pigeon Love in San Francisco
No child growing up in the SF Bay Area should be deprived of this classic tale of love in the nation's most romantic city. Read it aloud to ages 3 to 6.

Sid and Midge are pigeons who eat the bread crumbs from Blum's Bakery (now the Macy's Union Square entrance ...ugh) and enjoy the city together, particularly Union Square. Kids can really relate to Sid's plight on a horribly stormy day, when he is separated from his lovely Midge. They are happily reunited, and the sun shines just as beautifully as every San Franciscan knows it can.

Illustrated in quite colorful pencils, all in 50's fashions (a time when no San Franciscan woman went outside without hat and gloves) with charming views of the city that kids will joyfully recognize.

A classic! This would make a treasured posession for that special San Francisco child! ... Read more

Panicky Henny-Penny and her fine fearful feathered friends are all in a dither. The sky is falling and they must tell the king! Inthis hilarious, pun-packed adaptation of the classic tale, Jane Wattenberg updates the text with rockin' rollin' rhythm and hip-hoppin' panache: "'What's buzzin', cousins?' breezed Ducky-Lucky and Drake-Cake." "'Why the scowl, fowl?' gobbled Turkey-Lurkey." "'What's clickin', chicken?' pauwk, pauwked Cocky-Locky." Foxy-Loxy, that cunning cad, that greedy grunge, that skanky prankster, leads the flighty flock straight intohis evil lunch room, and that's the end of that for all except Henny-Penny, who squawks: "Chicka-chicka-bunga! I forgot to lay my egg today!" and runs lickety-split home again.

Wattenberg's fantastic photo-compositions feature her very own friendly fowls, as well as some clever non sequiturs of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Stonehenge, and the Egyptian pyramids, among other international landmarks. She is the creator of the bestselling board books Mrs. Mustard's Baby Faces and Mrs. Mustard's Beastly Babies. We can only hope her future plans forpicture books don't run a-fowl, because this one is farm-fresh. (Ages 3 to 7)--Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You Lucky Ducky! You Found The Right Version of Hen Pen!
Click on this title by accident? Serendipity! Keep reading.

If you only buy one version of Henny-Penny, this is the one to have. If you have other versions of Henny-Penny, get this one and use the others for beach fires or scrap paper--THIS ONE IS THE DIVA! Fabulous photography is mentioned in other reviews and they speak truth. The photo art is superb, witty, charming..., but what I love is the language. Get out the voices and get ready to play! This book rocks! It begs to be read aloud, a perfect picture book for even very old children like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
Jane Wattenberg's updated retelling of Henny Penny is full of rhyme, rhythm and very hip, very colorful language. My five year old can't get enough of this book. The photo illustrations are terrific with some silly surprises thrown in that all children will love to find and figure out. This is one fast paced, action packed, amazing book. Your family will love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definate Buy for young chlidren
My child is at that age where she loves music and anything with a rhythm. I remember when I was a child and was told this story; well the tale of the sky falling returns with a new twist. My child spends hours just rapping out the catchy lyrics in this remake of a classic story that all children are guaranteed to like. If you have a child within the ages of 6-15, i would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henny Penny rocks!
I love this cool new version of Henny Penny! The photo-montages are amazing and the text is fun and hip! This is one of those children's books which adults will love to read at least as much as kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dumb hen in a bright new look!
When I first saw this book, I thought, "Oh, no!", another classic has been ruined! Our pandering to the young with short attention spans continues. I had to change my opinion when I actually took the tour through Jane Wattenberg's book. It is a tour, as our friend from days past sets out on her mission to let everyone know...well, you know! Using photos of real animals was a stroke of genius, it made the book much more humorous and real at the same time. The colors are brighter than in the retellings of classics by Jon Scieska and Lane Smith, the closest books I can think of related to this one in genre and style. This brightness and the smart, sly humor make the book a lot of fun. The busy look of the book becomes integral to the story--everything is there for a reason. My favorite page is the one which has the road signs to help Hen find the king--there are visual puns on every variation of "king" you can think of. I read aloud to classes and decided not to read this to my kindergarten and first graders. There are too many references to events, people and cultural knowledge that they would not understand. Of course, on seeing the book my first thought was that this younger age was the target audience. However, reading it to third graders was a blast! They got enough of the references to find it hilarious and love it! They want to look at it more, because it takes time to find all the fun things. An added bonus is that adults really laugh--a nice break for a teacher in the middle of a school day! I highly recommend this book for older elementary age students and the adults in their lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book teaches a great lesson about confidence, something that all of us, adults and kids alike need. Told in a rich style that appeals to all ages, this book truly deserves a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true work of art
I love this story! The author did a beautiful job delivering a message of confidence.I would definitely recommend reading this book, especially to children.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Crow like you own the world"
CON-FI-DENCE, a word and idea that is somewhat ignored now-a-days. This great little book conveys the message that being "unique" is not such a bad thing after all. By looking at the world or one's situation from a different angle, a perceived negative can indeed become a positive, shame can turn into pride, ignorance into acceptance. Parents would be wise to spend some time sharing this story with their young children and hopefully it will rekindle a small fire in their souls as well. Having the pleasure of meeting the author I can see where the energy of her message comes from; I'm sure that her influences will be felt by many now and for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, inspirational book
I am so pleased with this book done by fellow Georgians.

The wonderful story in this little book by Eva Haynes, an elementary school teacher, willsurely encourage many childrenand promote their self-confidence.And thebeautiful and comical drawings are worth the price of the book. I have beentold that the 10th grader Kelly Bozarth, the illustrator, was only 13 whenshe did this work.

Both the author and illustrator have my highestpraise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations and story are Superb!
I first read about The Turkey that Crowed in our local paper, and decided to take my two grandaughters to the Haynes and Bozarth book signing. Thebook with its "character building" story and the beautifulillustrations is both touching and comical. The little book impressed me somuch that I purchased several copies of the book for the young members ofmy extended family.

I understand that this is the first work by theauthor, Eva Johns Haynes, who is a kindergarten teacher in a public schoolin middle Gerogia. I was very surprised to learn that 15 year old KellyBozarth, the illustrator, was only in the 7th grade when she did the artwork. Both she, and the author, have a great future ahead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill Peet charms again!
If you have yet to become acquainted with Bill Peet books, you're in for a treat! His vibrantly colorful illustrations are fantastic and his stories very engaging. I remember as a child how my imagination would run and frolick around in his wonderful stories and pictures.

Prewitt Peacock's story is no exception. It's a tale of a... well... a tail. Prewitt's tail is different from the other peacocks' tails, and he's subsequently an outcast. His tail isn't quite what it seems, however, and what was once his weakness becomes his greatest strength. Without being melodramatic, Bill Peet's story can teach a child that it's OK to be different - what sets you apart can make you special, too!

This book comes highly recommended for all kids (and their parents)! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Va bene!
What a great book. Not only is it a very cute fable, but my 5-year-old loves being able to surprise his Italian Nana with the Italian phrases he's learned. We first read this as a library loaner, but my son was so reluctant to return it that we had to buy our own copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The stuff of which memories are made
In the rolling Tuscan countryside a piccola crow goes into business with a wily weasel. And therein begins the story of Andiamo, Weasel! by Rose Marie Grant and illustrated by Jon Goodell, ($15.95 Alfred A. Knopf.)

This charmingly illustrated children's book is perfect for youngsters of all ages, meaning the grown-ups who read it to the children will enjoy the tale and the telling as much as the little ones. Grown ups reading aloud may even break in to the song "Funiculi, funicula!" more than once!

Youngsters accustomed to hearing parents and grandparents split their speech with words from the old country will feel right at home in this fable. Consider that all the speaking parts in this fable belong to the animals, and they all live in Italy, of course, they'll sprinkle their exchanges with a bit of Italian. (Won't the grown ups delight in translating for the little ones!)

Even the rooster, who only has one word says it in Italian, "Chicchirichi!" Frankly, we've never heard a rooster crow in another language, but if they did, we're sure this is how they'd sound in Italian. (It's that willing-suspension-of-disbelief-thing, we ARE talking about a fable here!) But the best part of that rooster's cameo word is hearing Mom or Dad or a grandparent bringing the word to life, or life to the word and lighting up a child's face.

As the glossary at end of Andiamo, Weasel! explains, piccola is small. So the crow is small and needs the help of the weasel, who ends up being prodded by the title (Andiamo, Weasel!) and rarely succumbs to work after the corn crop is sown while they merrily sing "Funiculi, funicula!"

This fable works on many levels, one of which for the children reading it is to learn that hard work will be rewarded, and that even though they might be small, or piccola, they probably are much stronger than they realize and should stand up for what's right.

As interesting and fun as is the story, I could see reading this aloud and pausing to point out the rich detail capturing the Tuscan farm country. The piccolo crow wears a flower in her straw hat; the weasel wears a neckerchief (as if he could just as easily hold up the next stage coach!) that he later wears around his broken leg when there is work to be done. In the menacing rain corn husks like vipers whirl in the wind under dark clouds.

The piccolo crow enlists the help of a wolf to frighten the weasel into doing the right thing. The wolf could have been drawn to be more scary and imposing a figure - but let's not upset the friends of the wolves in the world. And the tenor frightened off the bandstand by the piccolo crow - why was he a fat, balding man with a handlebar mustache? Ooh fah!

But these minor points are no reason that you shouldn't run out now and buy a copy of Andiamo, Weasel! for every tot you know, from 1 to 101 years old. It's the stuff of which memories are made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Believe In Yourself
This is a wonderful book for children, ages 5 to 8, to learn how to believe in their own power.

And quite frankly, it might not be a bad idea for adults to read, and think about the things that they want out of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting for young readers
My six-year old just received this book as a present. He his obsessed with birds, but this is the first book on birds he owns that is not a field guide. The book is nicely laid out, with chapters on each of the different classes of birds such as songbirds, birds of prey, waterfowl. There are also chapters on bird behavior such as courtship and nesting. There seems to be an appropriate balance of stunning photographs and text. The text highlights the main points, example "Fast Fishing: Ospreys fly high over water, diving down at high speed to catch fish. Just before hitting the water, they thrust their feet forward and plunge into the water to grap their prey. The osprey's feet feel like sandpaper, which makes them useful for gripping slippery fish." Finally, the book contains a glossary and a list of bird habitats for each of the species discussed in the text. Ideal for any young bird lovers! ... Read more

Book Description

Sometimes the most unlikely heroine can become an inspiration

Every year the geese return. Honking and flapping, they always land in groups. But this spring something is different: an injured goose stands on one leg – alone. Shunned by the other geese, she is unable to search for food, swim, or fly away. A young girl watches and wonders how a goose with one foot can survive. She wants to feed her, take care of her, be her friend. But her mother warns that “a wild goose has to learn to live with her weakness. Or she won’t live at all.” It takes patience and courage for both goose and girl to let nature take its course.

Told from a child’s point of view, and based on a true story, this simple, telling, and triumphant picture book is wonderfully illustrated in the bold paper-collage art of Holly Meade.

5-0 out of 5 stars a GREAT author! a GREAT book!
Cari Best is my favorite children's book author. My daughter is two and she loves Best's stories. Goose's story is a wonderful tale about love, friendship, family, animals, and trust. Best writes wonderfully, and the words are beautiful time after time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goose's Inspiring Story.....
"Henry hears the honking first. He circles the pond, around and a half, sending up splashes of warm spring mud all over his winter coat. Henry knows the geese are coming. And then I know it, too..." This is the best time of year for our young narrator, as the Canada geese arrive back at her family's pond, each spring. But this year she notices one of the geese has a badly injured foot, and when she visits the pond the next day, the goose's foot is gone. There she stands all alone, separated from the rest of the flock. The other geese have shunned her. "I never thought geese could be so mean." The little girl wants to take care of the poor footless goose, feed her, pet her, be her friend, but her mother and father warn her not to. "A wild goose has to learn to live with her weakness. Or she won't live at all." As the summer slides towards autumn, the little girl notices that the goose has grown stronger and more capable. It can balance and hobble on its stump, search for food, and swim. But she still worries that the goose won't be strong enough to push off and fly south for the winter, and will be left behind to die. And then one day when she comes home from school, all the geese are gone, and so is her little crippled friend. The winter months pass and the girl thinks often of the goose, and then one spring day, soon after she spots the first robin, she hears the familiar honking. "They land together. A couple of geese. Honking and flapping. Drinking and bathing. Combing each other's feathers. One is larger than the other, his neck as thick as a fire hose when he stretches it out to protect her-the goose with one foot..." Inspired by an actual event, Cari Best's touching and captivating story, as seen through the eyes of a grade school girl, is filled with drama, courage, determination, and triumph. Her engaging and evocative text is complemented by Holly Meade's bold and vibrant paper collage illustrations, that bring the wonders and wildness of nature to life. And together, word and art paint a vivid, empathetic, and uplifting portrait of an unlikely and endearing heroine. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Goose's Story is a heartwarming tale of nature and survival, and is definitely one of the best new picture books of 2002. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still one of our family's favorite picture books
My daughters are all teenagers now, and therefore pretty far over picture book age. Still, every summer we bring out Lottie's New Beach Towel to the family room coffee table so we can enjoy and re-appreciate the wry humor and simple, colorful illustrations on every page. It's the best of summer in a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for All Ages (even under the recommended '4+' age)
My 16-month old daughter LOVES this book and the cute illustrations - grandma has been "forced" to read it over and over and it has kept her attention. We're looking forward to getting the other books in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars charming
This is the first in a series of 3 books with Lottie the Hen and Herbie the Duck. Wonderful illustrations, sweet stories. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful
The illustrations are just wonderful in this book and so is the story. If you love the beach, you will definitely enjoy this. Lottie uses her beach towel in a variety of ways, to walk on when the beach is hot, as a sail when Herbie's boat stops running, as a bridal veil. And it is great that Lottie writes a thank-you note to her Aunt Mattie for the towel. The text is simple to read, but it is slightly more "grown-up" in nature compared to other childrens books we have. Nonetheless, since we are avid readers, my three year old loves it and we also have "Lottie's New Friend".

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny
My 3 Year old laughed out loud at Lottie's antics. The brief text is accompanying by charming pictures that tell the rest of the story. This book is a great gift for any child who loves the beach. ... Read more
