4-0 out of 5 stars If you like horse books you will love this one
I liked this book because it was exciting and to read. It has a great ending. Something new always happens that you would not expect. It has a good plot. It is suspenseful. You will want to know what happens next in the story.
Black Stallion is about a boy named Alec who finds and owns a black stallion. They get ship wrecked with no other living thing on the island. He has to find food for both himself and the stallion. The stallion is a big strong horse with a lot of speed and ability to run in a race. Their shelter caught on fire and burnt down. A ship saw the smoke and rescued them.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes horse books. It's fun to read. I would recommend it to fifth through seventh graders. It's an easy book to read. It's a great book with excitement and it is fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Would Never Believe How Many times I've Read it!!!!!!!!!
This is a story about a boy named Alec who first sees a savage, yet beautiful horse led onto his ship. Alec secretly befriends him. Then there is a terrible storm and the ship is sinking.Alec lets the Black go and he plunges into the sea with Alec. A day later They have reached land but for the better or worse?

Alec and The Black are finally rescued and Alec joins forces with an ex trainer named Henry Dailey. They plan to make Black a famous race horse but will the Black Stallion ever be truly tamed?

This was a beautifully well written story full of adventure and heart. If you don't try it then you will really be missing out.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Although the copy sitting on my shelf is the dog-eared Scholastic version of my youth, not this new edition, I feel that every child who has ever looked at a horse with wonder, seen it as a thing of beauty and nobility, or dreamed of having a horse of his or her own, should read this excellent series, beginning with this very book.

A fascinating and fantastical story of sea rescue, perseverance, and courage, as well as a peek into the world of horse racing half a century ago, these stories, despite being written in 1941, have a timeless quality that will always capture the heart of any adventurer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Heart of a Horse
This book is spetacular!!! Its one of the greatest books I have read in years. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put the book down. It was about a young boy, named Alec, who finds himself and a black horse to be the only survivors of a shipwreck. Alec soon learns that he owe his life to this black horse whom saved his life, by dragging him to an island. They soon learn they must depend on each other in order to survive on the island, and because of Alec's love for horses, he learns how to become the horse's friend and he starts a type of speacial bond between the horse and himself.

One of my reasons why I liked this book is, because it always gives me that feeling of whats going to happen next. Its just that the book is so full of excitment. Every time Alec rides the black horse, the author makes it seem that Alec is always risking his life. Every once in a while the author, Walter Farley, would write an event where it seems Alec could loss his life. Such as this, "A few minutes later Henry and Jake ran up to them, and Alec weakly climbed down from the saddle. Henry took the reins- they were sticky and wet with blood."

Another reason why I liked this book is, it has just the right level of vocabulary. Sometimes when you choose a book and it turns out to be something a little too easy or a little too hard, that you can't understand what the book is really talking about. Such as this sentence, "The next day Alec set out to obtain more of the carragheen" or this sentence, "he remebered the deep gully that was there.

My most favorite part of this book was, when Alec and the black horse gets rescued from the island they were stranded on, and when Alec finally gets to see his family for the first time in many months. The reason why I like this part is, it's full of happiness. Alec had never seen his family in about five months, and he thought that he was going to die on that island with the horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whoa, SeaBiscuit!
I first read THE BLACK STALLION when I was 9 - and I became hooked and read several of the books that followed in the series. None held up to this first book - but they were consistent and I still have them.

With the book first being published in 1941 - I wonder now how much of this story was influenced by the SeaBiscuit story?

Anyway - this is one of those books that I remember wishing with all my heart and soul I could be Alec, alone on the island in the sun with that horse. Just riding. And having no other thoughts in the world.

And sometimes, after a particularly bad week, this book is one of those that I scoop up to smooth my edges. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Black Stallion Returns by Walter Farley
Alec Ramsay's horse, the Black, who beat America's fastest horses, has just been claimed by his, supposedly, real owner, who lives in Arabia. This book is about how Alec will do anything to get back the Black, even if it means to go half-way around the world! Alec eventually finds himself in search of the Black's owner in the deserts of Arabia, and anything can happen in Arabia from desert raids to horse races.
This is an animal fiction book by Walter Farley. Two reasons I liked this book was because it had a page-turning story line and a wonderful ending. There were some parts of the book that lost my interest, but overall it was a fantastic book! I would give this book a rating of four out of five. The age group that the book would be best for is 10-15 years old. I really recommend you to read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book keeps you hanging on every word!
The Black Stallion Returns

By Walter Farley

Adventure

Characters:

Alec is Black's owner. He loves horses. He is 14 years old. He has black hair and goes to high school. He loves Black a lot.

Black is a black stallion who Alec befriends after a shipwreck.

Henry is the short, stout, bowlegged trainer of Black. He also owns the stables Black lives in.

Mr. Volence is the owner of Sun Raider, a horse Black beat in racing. He thinks Black can improve the American racehorse.

Abu Ja' ben Ishak is Black's real owner. His hair is steel gray. His skin is tough, dry, and the color of mahogany.

Raj is about 12 years old. He guides Alec's group through the desert. He has never known his family.

Tabari is Abu's daughter. She is about 15 years old. She is very beautiful. She loves her father a lot.

The Setting:

The book takes place in Henry's stables and Alec's house in the suburbs of New York, and in Arabia.

The Plot:

Someone tries to kill Black. The next day, a man shows up and claims to be Black's real owner. They find out he is telling the truth and he takes Black to Arabia. Henry, Alec and Mr. Volence follow him to Arabia where they learn about a conflict between Abu's tribe and a neighboring tribe. The conflict is that supposedly Abu killed his best friend, who happened to be the leader of the neighboring tribe. The son of the dead leader is very vengeful. Someone re-steals Black. Abu's and the neighboring tribe are about to go to war because Abu's tribe thinks the other tribe stole Black. Alec and Raj find out the truth and save Black. The man who kidnapped Black gets away, but his men did not. Alec and Raj help make the Tribes friends again and Raj finds his family. They hold a big race like every year. During the race the man who kidnapped Black tries to shot Black. Instead, the others tribe leader shot the man. At the end of the race the other tribe's leader who was riding for his tribe and Alec, who was riding for Abu's tribe, were racing their horses neck and neck. Black and Alec win by a small space. At the end, Tabari marries the chief of the other tribe. The tribes make peace and Abu promises Alec he will get Black's first son.

My favorite scene is when Alec meets Tabari because she is very nice and talks to Alec. I also like it when Alec meets Abu's tribe because it is all new for Alec and he behaves very nicely even though he is impatient to see Black. My two favorite characters are Raj and Tabari. I like Raj because he shows independence and he is very nice and wishes he knew his family. He wants to help Alec and be friends with him. I like Tabari because she is nice, beautiful, shows lots of independence and makes her own decisions. I recommend this book to horse or animal lovers. I also recommend it for mystery lovers. I think people should read this because it is full of adventure, mystery, horses, and Alec's thoughts. It is a wonderful book. It makes you feel like you are in the book. I think all my friends should read this. It truly is an excellent book. I would rate this book a 10 because it shows a boy's love for a horse and how he struggles to get his horse back when it is taken from him. I think Walter Farley did a wonderful job writing it. I would also give this book a ten because it keeps you wondering what happens next. Walter Farley keeps you hanging on his every word.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping, terrifying narrative
One day, Alec hears the Black whinny in fear and anger. He runs to the stables and is horrified to find a hypodermic in the straw of Black's stall. It is deadly. The only clue is a strange medallion with a bird on it. But then something even more frightening happens the next day. Alec goes to the stable to find out that an Arabic man has come all the way overseas to see-and claim--the Black. He really is the Black's owner, so off the
Black goes. Thinking there is a connection between the hypo and the claimer of the Black, Alec, Henry, and trainer Mr. Volence travel to Arabia. They battle starvation and the hot sun with the help of a young Arab boy named Raj to find the Black. But when they get to the Arab cheiftan's home, they end up riding among warring tribes...warring tribes who are threatening to plunder and kill...and the leader turns out to be the man who tried to kill the Black! Then Alec is captured by the Black's evil nemisis--and may be killed himself!

4-0 out of 5 stars Black Stallion Rocks
This was a good book, but it had some parts I didn't like.I didn't like it when the owner of Black went to Alec's house and said that that was his horse. The author should have had the owner steal Black instead of telling Alec. The part I like was when Alec was racing on Black in the desert. The author used good details when describing Black.I enjoyed the fact Alec was the only one who can ride Black .I would recommened this book to anyone who loves horses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Black is back in a whole new book!
The Black stallion is a wonderful book some parts are scary and some are sad. But in the end it all comes together in a wonderful horse mystery/adventure! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Black Stallion and Satan
The Black Stallion and Satan is a great book by Walter Farley. It is the 3rd book in the Black Stallion series. This 178 page book was just as amazing as all the other Black Stallion books, so if you enjoyed the other book I suggest you read this one as well.

Right from the begining this book is exciting and suspensfull, you wont want to put it down. Alex gets a letter from Abu's daughter, telling him that her father has died, when he was thrown from the black. In his will Abu has left the Black to Alec. Abu has entered the black in a race. So Alec decided to let the Black run in that last race before his retirment, instead the Black and Satan end up in a race for there lives!

This is a great book that you will love just as much as the other Black Stallion books, but if you haven't read the other books I suggest that you read them before this one. This book would be good for anyone in there teens to adult.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Exciting Tale Of Stallion, Colt, and Wildfire!
If there was a book that could just sweep you away in a race of horses and nature, this is the book! Satan and The Black come head to head! But it isn't a race against each other, it's a race against a blazing inferno! You will see who truly is faster; The Black or His Son, Satan. It is a truly wonderful story. You won't be able to put it down!

Read the book! It is truly exciting. I guarantee it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Black Stallion and Satan
The Black Stallion and Satan is about Alec and both of his horses. In the beginning the Black isn't his. Alec misses the Black and Satan because he never gets any time alone with Satan now that he is a race horse. So when the Black's owner dies and leaves him to Alec, Alec decides not to race the Black. He buys a farm where he is going to retire the Black and use him to breed racehorses. When Alec learns that he is the only one who believes that the Black is faster than Satan, he decides to prove it and gets into a lot of trouble which results in the public finding out the Black is back in America. The press puts a lot of pressure on Alec to race the Black against Satan, an he agrees. Just before the race something happens to all the horses that are supposed to be in the race. Will anyone ever know which horse was faster?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Black Stallion and Satan
The Black Stallion and Satan 176 Pages By Kitty I could Identify with Alec Ramsay when he felt some stress over the upcoming International Cup Race. His stallion, the Black was going to be racing against some of the best racing stallions and colts in the world including his own son, who was also owned by the Ramsays and trained by their good friend Henry Dailey. Alec was stressed, because he was afraid he was going to have to pull the Black from the race because he was an aggressive unpredictable horse who might be compelled to fight the other stallions. There were a number of important events that resulted in the outcome of the story, and one might almost say there were multiple climaxes. The setting had a very big effect on the main character, and in a way changed the story. I enjoyed this book a lot and hope that if you choose to buy it, you will enjoy it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kentucky Derby Book Written!!
This is a great book!! I love Walter Farley. I have never read a horse racing book that was this good, for reason not just because the horse you wouldn't think would win. The whole time you think Henry will never get Black Minx to the Run for the Roses, but she does. I am also a HUGE fan of the Black Stallion tv series. Best series on tv and it isn't even American. Got to love The Black Stallion!!

3-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books in the series (later that is)
I really enjoyed reading "The Black Stallion's Filly". Of course we all knew right from the get-go that Black Minx would win the Derby; the process was fascinating. This story really centers more on Henry and Black Minx, more than Alec and the Black. Henry's solutions for curing Black Minx of her bad habits and foibles were wonderful.

Oh and BTW, in response to an earlier reviewer's query: in the first chapter of the first book it is plainly stated that the Black is "too big to be pure Arabian". Additionally, in Book #2 (The Black Stallion Returns) Abu Ishak states that Shetan (the Black) is NOT a purebred Arabian. However, even if the Black WAS a purebred Arab, the Jockey Club was still registering Arabians up though 1943 (the first book in the series was published in 1941). One more thing - at least one offspring of the Black already WON the Kentucky Derby - Satan, in the book "The Black Stallion and Satan". Just FYI.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Black Stallion's Mistake...
To give Henry Dailey credit it was he, not Alec, who bought Black Minx and trained her to race, although Alec did agree to be her exercise rider and jockey. Over 30 books the details become a bit fuzzy, which makes for some minor confusion. Otherwise, the Black Stallion's Filly is a great book. I can't say the same for the series. The author seems content with the pattern of the books, and hasn't stopped using it:

Alec/Henry finds a great horse (usually a son/daughter of the Black) and trains it, then (against all odds) the horse becomes a champion (usually through winning some great race.)

Aside from that, the characters are DULL. Alec plays the careful stable owner, while Henry does all the thinking, talking, and impulsive decisions, which is a drastic change from the first book, The Black Stallion, where Henry is a married man who has sworn off racing "forever." Another thing: Henry has been "old" for a very long time, yet he never gets any older, and never seems to suffer from any of the afflictions that usually come with old age - arthritis, etc.

While The Black Stallion's Filly gets 4 stars, the series gets 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars the black stallions filly
I read all the books as a kid, now I am collecting all of the books for my own kids to read. This book is one of the best in the series. I feel that Farleys books are best when there is racing involved and the derby at the end of the book is one of the best in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will Black Minx live up to her expectations?
I LUV this book!
Black Minx is bought as one of Henry's first horses. He wants Minx to run in the Derby.....Minx is just like her sire, tempermental and spirited. She doesn't seem to want to run her hardest but when she does she burns up the track! Alec and Henry know she could blow away the Derby field but can they find out how to get her to run?
OK...great book but one question, HOW DOES A PART ARABIAN RUN IN THE DERBY?!?!?!?! It is a simple question!! The Black is pure Arabian from Arabia sooooo how does his daughter run in the Derby? Well, other that that a terrific book! One of my faves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can the Black win against Flame?
I was glued to the book the minute I picked it up. I was amazed at how well Walter Farley was able to place the story and help the readers understand what Alec feels when he is challened to race by Steve Duncan. You know what is going on all the time.

I got the book for Christmas and I finished it before school started up again. Every aspect of it is good. If you just want to curl up with a good book, this is the one.

I hope to be just as good a writer as Walter Farley. As far as horse books go, you can't get any better than him!

4-0 out of 5 stars In My Opinion the Best Black Stallion Book
Firstly, before reading this I recommend you first get familiar with "The Black Stallion" by reading a few of his books. Also reading "The Island Stallion" would greatly help. This book is about the closely matched competition between The Black Stallion (The Black) and The Island Stallion (Flame). It starts out as a letter to Alec Ramsey asking for help from Steve Duncun, but it turns out to be so much more. As the competition builds between the horses it also starts to build between the owners as well. This book will bring an exciting combination of shock and suspence.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting and Thrilling Story!
I thought this book was captivating and it really pulled me in. When an unknown Island Stallion named Flame comes to the track and starts breaking records some believe that the Black has finally met his match! Can the Black win against this mysterious Island Stallion? You'll have to read The Black Stallion Challenged to find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars the black stallion challenged
I already knew that the black would win........He is a awesome horse! I have all but two of these books! I hope to get the rest of them!

1-0 out of 5 stars Farley's second chance at the Match of the Century fizzles.
Once again Farley matches the Black against Flame this time in a race instead of a fight. However the Black always has to win because if he didn't, what's the appeal of a racehorse that wins most of the time? In the real world, we've got plenty of those. Because of that it is easy to guess the ending from the first page. It's not a horrible book that I think you should avoid at all costs but it is certainly only for hardcore Black Stallion series or horse fans. Another bone to pick: Henry Daily keeps getting older and older but never retires or gets sick or dies. He has got to be at least 80 by the time of this book and yet he never misses a step. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Promise (You'll see what I mean)
In my earlier review I mentioned a promise made to Alec by Abu ishak. Well Satan, the first son of the Black is that promise. And now Satan is Alec's horse. His parent's are expectng a nice slow pony that will grow up to be a nice slow horse. But Alec has other plans. But the day at the dock when Satan is finally his everyone gets a surprise. Satan is mean, sour and waiting to strike. Will Alec's dreams go down the drain? Or will the son of The black Stallion go down in racing history?

In all I think this was a great book. But let me just get this off of my shoulders. Satan is not The Black, and never will be, So don't expect the magic that happened between Alec and the Black.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walter couldn't have wrote it better!
No one could have captured the thrilling tale of a boy named Alec who was givin the first son of the Black Stallion, Satan, any better than Walter Farley. Satan was wild and Was almost untamable until one day Alec saved Satan from strangeling him self and from then on Satan was loyal and loving to Alec and became a great race horse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping but lacks something
A riveting tale that will have you up all night! The Black stallion's son is pure evil. He hates everybody and won't let anybody touch him, much less ride him. He hates Alec, Henry, Mr. Volence--everyone. Alec thinks that with kindess that SATAN will be tame. But Henry, a veteran trainer, thinks otherwise, and is proved right. One day while Alec is at school, Henry fights with the colt--and more unusual things happen than he had ever seen on the tracks...

However, this book lacks the charm or variety of the first two books. It keeps repeating how Satan is a killer and he's worthless.

4-0 out of 5 stars You need to read this!
Son of the Black Stallion is about Satan, who is the Black Stallion's first foal. He is given to Alec who plans to train him to be a race horse. But when Satan arrives he is very hateful. He even hates Napoleon. The book goes on forever about how Satan hates everyone and is so mean and refuses to be trained by anybody. Then Henry does something to Satan and Alec must save his horse. Of course after he saves him he totally loves him and will do anything for him. (Does this sound a little like Alec and the Black? Steve and Flame?) So anyway he enters him in a big race. This book isn't the best book in the series but it's pretty good and you have got to read it to understand the rest of the series because alot of the books that come after this one have Satan in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Horse Classic
When the Black returns to Arabia, Abu Ishak promises Alec that he will have the Black's firstborn. When that colt arrives, it soon becomes evident that Satan has inherited his father's savage desire to run and to fight. Alec tries to win the horse's love and confidence, but as Satan grows older he becomes dangerous. Alec, away at college, doesn't realize how savage Satan has become. After Satan throws Alec, injuring him; Henry decides to "teach" Satan-with a whip. Henry realizes too late how dangerous Satan really is, and is almost killed. Henry, in a desperate attempt to save his life, almost kills Satan. Now Satan has no reason to trust humans. Can Satan ever be tamed? Will Satan finally learn to trust and love Alec? ... Read more

This is a fantastic book about an wild stallion on Azul Island who the Black has met in the Black Stallion and Flame. Steve had dreams about this flame coloured stallion which only became real when he and his friends unlocked the secret of the island on a trip there. This brings them into the heart of an unknown world of horses who lived unseen by humans for centuries. When Steve begins to bond with Flame after Flame's defeat in a battle, he rescues him from death. Steve helps him to recover to finally win back his herd. The ending was the best part when Steve made a decision which would affect Flame's future. Leave him be on the island or take him to live with him in the world of civilisation? I respect his decision and I am glad that Walter Farley made it that way. That was what made the book so great combined with a great description of the enviroment and a real feel for horses. It shows the reader a picture of the wild horses. I think Walter Farley is a wonderful writer, way better than Steven Farley. I love all his books and this is one of his best books. Walter Farley at his best. You can tell he really likes horses a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Secret A Choice And A Decision
I absolutly loved this book. It had a story line similar to the Black's but much different in a way. you'll surprised how the slow beginning becomes a fast paced adventure.

Steve and his archeologist friend have decided to go camping on Azul Island, an island which seems to be nothing but sheer unscalable cliff. Some how they find a way inside to what seems a beautiful paradise where lives the beautiful Stallion named Flame. Steve imediatly falls in love with the horse who leads the herd of wild horses. But when Flame suffers a terrible defeat only Steve has the power to save him. Now Steve must risk everything. He can bring Flame back to New York and ruin the secret of Azul Island and let Flame's beautiful herd of horses die out or leave him and be forever scarred. Now you must read the book to find out what Steve's decision is.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
This is the best book in the Black Stallion series besides the origional Black Stallion! It isn't about the Black so that might be one reason- the author had a fresh start. It is about a boy Steve, who camps on a desert island while staying in the Carribean with a friend. Everyone thinks the island is inhabitable except for a small sandspit. But Steve has a dream about a red stallion on a cliff that seems unaccessable. Or is it a dream? This is a great book and it even got me interested in the Spanish conquistadors. Anyone who likes adventure or horses even a little bit needs to read this!

2-0 out of 5 stars rings familiar
Hmm...a lonely young boy who loves horses just happens upon an exquisitely beautiful, amazingly fast wild stallion (with marks of Arabian blood in spite of his immense size) that is eventually tamed by the boy, but always remains wild...

Now where have I heard that before?

Farley might as well have titled this one "The Black Stallion (But he's a chestnut now, and Alec changed his name to Steve)".

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book...
I thought this book was a mind capture, it made you feel like you were the boy who so desperatly wants the wild slallion to be his friend. If you'r a lover of horses and don't have one, you should read this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Black Stallion Mystery
this book is great!!!
i got handed down one of the origional copies by my aunt and i thought, oh just another book.
after reading it, i found that it was really good all the way through apart from the ending could have been a bit better because it really lead you up to something but the tension, i felt, could have been held better!
i would still reccomend this book to people at the age of 13+

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Most exiteing suspenseing book in the world!!
This is the most thrilling book in the world!

Alec,The Black, and Henry are out on an adventure... once again!!

Alec is baffled by three colts that arrive for sale from Spain. They look so much like his horse, that Alec is sure they have the same sire. But that wonderful stallion died years ago in Arabia. Or did he?In search of the answer Alec and the Black begin a dangerous journey.
In spain they meet the colts' eccentric owner, Angel Gonzalez, who takes them to a remote mountian stronghold of anb Arab sheik. The sheik insists he's seen the Black's sire running free, in the mountains. And he wants Alec and the Black to catch him.Yet Alec is suspicious. He thinks the whole story is nothing more than an elaborite plot to lure him and his horse to this desolate place-but why??
You have to have read the first book in the series to know who Tabari is and if you don't then, you wouldn't get the whole book (expeacially the end!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Walter Farley Has Done It Again!
If I said a lot about this book, it would give it away and spoil the fun of reading it. So, I'll say this:

Alec and the black are in a plane crash in the middle of the rockies. Alec is left with amnesia and the Black is left in the wild and he becomes the "black outlaw."

You will enjoy the book. Find out how the Black and Alec meet again!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great read for horse lovers!
This book is great for everyone who loves horses(especially the Black)! After a fight at Hopeful Farm, the Black and Alec head to a free-range ranch for a few months. On the way, a accident in the wilderness sends Alec across many states running from the police(he has amnesia and thinks he murdered someone) and trying to regain his memory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Four For Sure
I give this a four because I am so angry about what happened to Alec and the Black. Amnesic (or something like that) Alec wanders about thinking his name is Mcgregor while the black is claimed by some cowboy people (you can tell i haven' read this in a long time) Some people think he is a run away murderer and of course Alec doesn't know if he is, he might after all he woke up with blood on his hands. he has no ID either just a bunch of money which he could have stolen (sigh) Finally he remembers who he is and everyone lives happily after. It's a good book but you don't have to read it to understand the rest of the series like some other books in the series. it's almost like and extra or a palate cleansor, but it was worth the money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Favourite in the Series
I read all the Black Stallion books as a child - and loved all of them - but this one always remained my favorite. It does not have the "high adventure" that frequents many of Mr. Farley's other books (that said, I think the last chapter of this book is the most exciting, and well-written, of the series) but it offers one of the most articulated and lasting pictures of life at the racetrack I have ever come across for either adults or children (the depiction of the "old man" handicapper is especially brilliant).
I think this book is the highlight of the series - joyful and full of all the best excitement the racetrack has to offer. I'm so glad to see it's coming back into print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riding High
This was a great book that I could read over and over. The Black is pulled out of retirement to race again so that there will be enough money to rebuild the barn. The Black must race against Eclipse, the winner of The Preakness and the Belmont and definetly the horse to beat and a chesnut horse who's name I forget. I read this book again last summer and I can still replay the race vividly in my mind. This book might notc be my favorite in the series but it is truly riding high!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Walter Farley's Best Books!
This book was one of my favoites in the Black Stallion series. Alec believes in the Black and the Black never lets him down though his pure determination, courage, and heart. Absolutely a must to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most memorable yet
I am a huge fan of all the books about the Black, Mr. Farley is the king of horse writing. This book, out of all the others, has been my favorite, however...and why? I'm still not sure.

The Black's neverending fire and devotion and heart is shown so vividly in that final race that it left me with a lump in my throat. And I normally do NOT cry or get emotionally jolted at ALL in books OR movies. A 1 star, Ms. Rebecca? Dig a little deeper, my friend. You obviously don't have a taste for writing. Enjoy the book, isn't that what reading is about? And this book is one of the best of all the Black Stallion series. The most memorable showing of the Black's speed, endurance, and heart and love and desire against all odds is in here. If you are a Black Stallion fan, all the reasons you are are in this book. It will touch your heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courage
This is a great book about the courage, stamina, heart, speed, and love for running the Black has; Brilliantly written with a good plot. To the person who gave this book a 1 you are probably biased. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars captivating and imaginative
I read this book not too long ago. I had not heard about the book before hand and did not read the summary of it on the back cover, so I had no idea what to expect from it. What I got was something completely unexpected. I thought I was going to hear about Steve Duncan taking Flame from the island to race but in a similar format as in the first novel, The Black Stallion. When the extra-terrestrials showed up I was happily surprised. This is the only novel in which Farley ventures into the world of science fiction. I think he did a marvelous job with it although I do agree with the other reviewer that it is somewhat difficult to understand and may not be and easy read for younger children like many of the other books in the series have turned out to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars oNE OF THE BEST HORSE BOOKS EVA!
I dont care what anyone says, this was a great book. I mean, come on people, have an imagination! I liked how the "aliens" helped Steve, and they werent wanting to take his horse or something like other weird books. It was really good, it started out boring but got wayyyy better. A MUST for those who truly love horses.

1-0 out of 5 stars I read this 30+ years ago and still remember it.
Maybe the fact that it is so memorable should make me rate it higher, but I was an avid Farley fan and had read all his books that I could get my hands on, in both the Black Stallion and Island Stallion series. But this one above all others stands out in my mind because it was the only one (that I recall anyway) that involved aliens. I can still taste the disappointment that I experienced as a child when aliens got introduced into an otherwise reasonably realistic though somewhat implausible series.

Now that my daughters will be reading over the coming years, I hope they read the entire series, but I hope they don't experience the disappointment I did over this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare title is definitely worth a read!
If you love The Black Stallion books by Walter Farley, you should take a look at his "Island Stallion" books. This title "The Island Stallion Races", is about Steve Duncan, with the aid of two humanoid aliens, racing Flame! Flame is a herd stallion, as wild as the come! Will Steve be able to control him on a track with other stallions? Can Flame prove his speed to the world? Also, who are these aliens? This book was an exciting and adventrous read for kids and adults alike! Hard to find, but worth it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book was hard to get a hold of, but wasn't that bad. I've got to admit that it was a little unusual than the others in the series, but still not the worst. I mean it's about aliens who visit earth! How often is that used in a horse book? Definitely makes it one of a kind! It's pretty cool when Flame finally races. What could this mean? And does Flame win? What's this about aliens? Read this book to find out! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Black Stallion's Ghost
Not for the squeamish! There's forbidden sex, a non-Christian diety and violence. And really not for children ages 9-12, as recommended. I know--I've HAD this book since 9 and hated it then. I re-read it a couple nights ago (I am now in my late 20s) and really enjoyed it. Personally, I would rate the book a 7, but useing the entire Blackl Stallion series as a reference, I gave it a 6. The average reader of the Black Stallion series likes their stories to have all the questions clearly answered, have the horses be the most complex characters and have a definate ending--this book does not have those. I have the feeling Walter Farley wrote this book more for himself than for his audience. He tried to write something he was not known for--a creepy Edgar Allen Poe type book, instead of a regular horse story. Also, he wrote The Black Stallion in 1945 and this was published in 1969--I think he EXPECTED his readers to grow up a bit and want to read something different. If you avoided this book as a kid, give it a try now--you'll be surprised. This is one of the most unique books of the series, requireing you to think and use your imagination as well as to have a love for horses

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
The Black Stallion's Ghost by Walter Farley left me in suspense so I didn't want to put it down! I recommend this book for children ages 8 to 14. It was neat to learn that Ghost's owner was afraid that Kovi would come and get him. The parts where the horse's routine was described were very interesting.

The Black Stallion, written by Walter Farley, is about a young boy and a stallion called Black. There has been many sequels of The Black Stallion. This book is about a boy named Alec and his adventure with his horse. Alec went to see a circus with a ringmaster and a horse who is like a ghost. Alec was riding Black through the fog-shrouded Everglades and they came upon a man on a gray mare that turns out to be the Ghost. They met eachother and the captain invited Alec to his house. Alec has a feeling that his host is insane. They had lunch together and Alec was about to go home when the captain begged him to stay for the night because a storm would be coming soon. It turned out that the captain wanted to breed his horse with Black. When Black was getting close with the Ghost, the captain tried to keep him away and got a pitch-fork to defend his horse. The next thing that happened was Black was running off towards the Everglades. Alec who was knocked out woke up and found that Black was gone. He tried to run after him, but the captain wouldn't let him because it was dangerous. Alec begged the captain to go with him because it was his fault that Black ran off. The captain was afraid of the Haitian curse. After a long search, the captain was found dead by Alec. Alec eventually found the Black. He rode back to the captain's place and found the people from the place he was supposed to stay at. They were very worried about Alec and took him and Black back. Alec told them the story, but they said that the captain had died a long time ago. They found out that the blind man had sold the Ghost to a man. Alec had wanted to buy that horse so that he could breed the Ghost and Black. They found the man who had the Ghost and Alec said he would buy it for any amount of money. The man said the horse was not on sale, but Alec eventually bought the horse for a large amount of money.
I like the book because it is an adventurous story about a horse and a loving boy. One of my favorite quotes is, "It's too late for regret. I MUST find him." It showed how much Alec had love for Black. Alec had lived with Black since his childhood and had loved and cared for it although the horse was a wild and fierce one that no one could go near him but himself. Another quote that I like was, "Come on. We're getting out of here." This quote meant that Alec was getting out of the Everglades with Black together without any of them getting left behind.
My favorite part of the book was when Alec and the captain went to find Black. Alec had the courage to go when the captain didn't. I liked this part because Alec wouldn't give up finding Black and that showed how much he cared for it.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Black Stallion's ghost
Imagine your horse running away, your only friend. Walter Farley, author of The Black Stallion's Ghost, puts you right next to Alec Ramsey,11, when he takes a different path one day with his horse, The Black. Little did he know, this decision would come back to haunt him.
Alec is an average boy, with the exeption he is one of the youngest horsemen and he and his horse are racers. The Black can run like the wind; together Alec and The Black are unstopable.
When Alec and The Black were riding through an unfamiliar trail, they suddenly heard music. They looked through a nearby bush and saw a man with his horse. When the man saw Alec, he invited him over for lunch. The man called himself Captain.
When they got there, a fierce storm hit forcing Alec to spend the night.
As night came, Alec could not fall asleep. He looked through the window and saw The Black running away. Captain came out of the barn. Alec ran to get his horse, he was too far in the Everglades to find.
Will Alec find his horse? Read to find out. I recomend this book to 10 and up, there is blood and violence. I liked this book because it talks about horses and you always wonder what will happen next.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Scary For Some Kids!
My third grader checked this out of the library, thinking that it would be a kid's book about a horse mystery. WRONG! This book had her scared for a week! 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK
I happen to disagree w/ the person that said that the book was horrible. I loved this book so much. Everytime I read it, I'm on the edge of my seat wondering if everything is going to turn out ok, even though I know what is going to happen. I have probably read the book 7-8 times since I found it in a box that my mom used to have. I have read about half the books and I love them all. I would definitly recommend this book to anyone that loves horses!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Black Stallion and Flame
In The Black Stallion and Flame, Alec and the Black are in a plane wreck when flying over the Caribbean. The chapters then alternate between Alec and Henry, who make there way to a populated island, and the Black, who makes his way to a nonpopulated island. Alec and Henry are looking for the Black when they discover that a deadly diseased vampire bat is on the loose. Meanwhile the Black finds his way onto an island through a tiny passage that is almost invisible. Alec and Henry take a boat out looking for the Black and discover the island that he is on, but they can't figure out how to get onto it (this is the same island from The Island Stallion, for those of you who have read it). Alec realizes that the bat has traveled in their boat with them to the island! The Black meets Flame, the Island Stallion, but it doesn't use the name "Flame" in the story so unless you have read The Island Stallion, you have no idea who the "Flame" in the title is. Anyway, they are battling! But then the bat comes onto the island and starts trying to attack them! Will the horses team up to defeat the deadly bat, or will one (or both) of the heroes die (either thru battle or from the bat)? And there's the big question looming over it all: Will Alec find his horse? And if he does, will the Black be willing to give up his new life in the wild for the world of racing? This is a super book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Should be called Black Stallion meets Dracula
I found this to be one of the worst Black Stallion stories ever published. I have been a fan of Walter Farley's horse stories since the early sixties and I agree with many other reviewers that most of them center upon some horrible accident. Another problem is that Alec never seems to age, he's always a "boy". I would not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Black and Flame meet!
This book is so good. I read it over and over. I was so scared when the bat came after the Black and Flame even though I knew nothing can happen to the heros of the story.

3-0 out of 5 stars darnit!
I got so excited when I saw this book! My favorite horses in the world by my very favorite author! It started well, but somehow it didn't grip as well as all the rest of Farley's. Still worth the price and the read, but not up to the Farley par. The story is good, but the details don't wrap me up, and the tension doesn't build as strongly. Read it anyway. ... Read more
