Labels may not be helpful for young children
I love Todd Parr's animated illustrations and charm. But after purchasing this book and reading it to my 2-year old, I wasn't as excited about this particular book. The labels "good" and "bad" are used in a way that it introduces ideas into a young child's mind. Like some of the examples were "good:light", "bad: the dark". I am trying to teach my daughter NOT to think of the dark as something bad and not to be afraid of! So that's not too helpful. Also, it has "monsters: bad" as well as "big hairy spiders: bad". We're trying to convince my daughter that monsters don't exist, not that they are "bad" and make her scared even more. The other labels in the book are funny, like "smelly feet: bad" and "hot chocolate with marshmallows: good".

I know Todd Parr just wanted to write a funny book for kids. But if your children are at the stage where they are scared of things or take things very literally, then you might want to choose a different book!

Good Book
I am a teacher and I love these books. Todd Parr has outdone himself yet again in writing this book. I am sure that it will be a hit with my class of first graders.

New fun, funky emergent reader series
I love the Todd Paar books! Neon-y colors and goofy, childlike art make these very simple books stand out from the crowd. Things that make you feel good include bubble baths, pets, hot chocolate with marshmallows, and bedtime stories. Things that make you feel bad include smelly feet, stinkbugs, worm stew, and monsters. The combination of things that are real and things that are silly will make you laugh and maybe take life a little less seriously. Too much fun for bedtime!
Yes, this book WILL get the kids trying to jump on the bed. It's a lot of fun, and much laughing is heard whenever we read it. There is a lot of detail in the pictures - I love watching the doctor, and Mama gives us a great ending! I picked this up when my younger son was asking for us to play "monkeys on the bed" (the rhyme with hand motions)over & over & over - my fingers were tired. We've been reading ever since! Have I mentioned that the board book format is a great, sturdy idea? Definately a good buy, and highly recommended.

Monkeys are the best!
I have been reading this book to my son since he was 3 months old. The first time we read it he actual laughed out aloud. He is now 10 months and still loves this book. We read it every night before bed and are even painting monkeys on his wall because they are his favorite. Those monkeys are very cute and babies love them.

Five Little Monkeys Jumped on a Bed
This is a very good book this was my favorite book when I was little. It is a really good book for kids, and I don't think that you would be disappointed if you bought it. It is easy to follow along with, and it is even better because it involves monkeys.

Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
In this book there a five little monkeys that have to go to bed. So the monkeys all get in the bath, put there pajamas on, and brush their teeth. The monkeys say goodnight to their mama and are supposed to be sleeping, when all of the little monkeys start to jump on the bed! One of the monkeys falls off and bumps his head. The mama called the doctor and the doctor said, "NO MORE MONKEYS JUMPING ON THE BED!"
This book teaches mainly only one lesson and that is that you shouldn't jump on your bed because you can get hurt by falling off. The age level for this book is 3-7. I have liked this book since I was little and I would definately recommend this book to little kids!

Love the Monkeys
You have to love the monkeys. My 17 month old does. She will ask for my husband and I to read the book 10 times in a row. She never tires of hearing it and is now learning to do the motions with me. His new snuggly?
My 20 mo old son hasn't "bonded" to an object yet and this book may be it...he LOVES the pictures and makes sounds like Blue when he reads it. He's hard to get to concentrate on a book...we may get the whole series!

just okay
My daughter is a huge Blue's Clues fan so we had to get this book for her. I was also looking forward to the subject of bedtime since my little girl tends to have trouble winding down and getting ready for bed. So I thought maybe this would help a little.
I thought the story was not really as good as some other Blue's Clues books we've read. And the main thing I didn't really like was that the pages just had too much text for us. My daughter is 20 months and actually has quite a long attention span for her age, but she just doesn't stay interested in this book long enough for me to read a whole page.
If your child is a little older though, it should be okay. Overall I wouldn't say this is a bad little book...just okay!

Great Bedtime book!
My 18 mo old son had become a Blues Clues addict. He calls them "coo-clues." I bought this book for him along with a few others, and this has become the overwhelming favorite. He brings it to me all the time, requesting me to read it. In the book Blue goes through her bedtime routine and my son finds it easy to follow along pointing out to things along the way. He likes this book so much we usually end up reading it several times in a row!

Bedtime favorite
This book is our daughters favorite our of all the Blue's books. It's the current bedtime book and she could easily spend the entire night reading it. It is fun for parents to read in bed with their kids and you will enjoy it too. Pages are bright and colorful and holds the childs attention. Parents add a few sound effects, dog barks etc, like on tv, and you will have a winner here. The whole Blue's videos and books are a must and in association with parental teaching your child will improve greatly. Where was Blue many years ago for our other children. One of the best learning shows around. Our daughter is two years old and now has a great imagination and play skills, which, thanks to Blue and Steve, is improving each and everyday of Blues Clues. Buy this book, plenty of fun adults and kids.

Good bed-time book - but no clues
This is a nice little book for walking your child through a bedtime routine. It doesn't require any familiarity with Blue's Clues for it to make sense and be a good bed-time read. However, if your child (like mine) is a Blue's Clues nut, and constantly scanning for clues, this book may cause some dissapointment at first. Sweet Story, Beautifully Illustrated
My two year old son loves The Very Quiet Cricket; and this book, along with "Brown Bear, Brown Bear...", have been his bedtime favorites for months. Toddlers and parents alike will enjoy the repetitive and rhythmic nature of the verse (my son heaves a very dramatic sigh every time I read "...but nothing happened, not a sound." The simplicity of the tale lends itself nicely to parental embellishment, which is great for those who like to add a bit of their own drama to a story. I love the fact that I can tailor my reading of it to suit the hour or my son's mood, making it shorter or longer, exciting or soothing. Eric Carle's illustrations alone make this book a worthy addition to any child's library.

I agree with the reviewer who complained that this is not "first reader" material, but I would add that "The Very Quiet Cricket" is more about the joy of reading than about teaching the mechanics of sounding out simple words.

Attention getting illustrations
The Quite Cricket book is another favorite from Eric Carle. I have almost every book he has written. My favorite is The Very Hungry Caterpillar but this is a tie for second.. I loved how he illustrated all the other insects in the story especially the dragonfly. The large drawings would hold the attention of a young child. This isn't a book for a new reader some of the vocabulary is a little difficult. The only draw back to this book is when the battery that makes the cricket sound dies, it is rather expensive to replace.

Great Illustrations & Story, but...
My 8 1/2 month old is fascinated by the wonderful artwork and the chirping sound. I expect he'll enjoy the story when he can understand the words. However, there's an inconsistency in the text that drives me crazy. The three crickets are referred to as "he" and "she," but the praying mantis and worm are referred to as "it." Argh!

Our child loves this book!
We received this book as a gift and Grandma ended up getting the board book version for our daughter because she loved it so much (and wanted to look at it more often than we did)! The illustrations are great, like in all of Eric Carle's books.

She loves getting to the end of the story, but will also turn back to look at favorite pages.

We have a few of the other Eric Carle books and enjoy them as well, but this one stands out right now and it doesn't look like her interest is going to fade any time soon.

Very Provocative Bugs
The Very Quiet Cricket is a great book, and while difficult, I suspect most children will like this much more than their parents suspect. Like all of Eric Carle's books, my son (2 ½) loves The Very Quiet Cricket. The art is, as always, amazing, and he really enjoys repeating the phrases on each page. The formula seems to draw out his inquisitiveness; this book nearly always stimulates more enjoyment than others do. In particular, he enjoys the chirping sound the book makes when you turn to the last page. He'll ask to have the book read to him as many as four times in a row.

This is a challenging book for young kids, more so than many of Carle's others. I think the interesting insects and provocative words and sounds are part of why my son likes it so much. It may be some time before he really masters that vocabulary, but I love that Carle challenges his young readers in this way. I can unconditionally recommend this book. ... Read more

Communist Manifesto for Toddlers
A lion, a dog, and a tiger all compete to see who can accumulate the most apples "up on top." All goes well (excepting perhaps a little inflation,) until some other animals without any apples become envious and decide to knock down all the apples. If they can't have them, no one will! Isn't that just like a Leftie? The apple-less animals chase the appled animals around town, until finally they collide with a horse and cart piled hyperbolically high with apples. Boom! The end result? *Everyone* has the same number of apples up on top, and everyone's so happy. No rich, no poor! Wow, what a world that would be.

Surprise: Board Book Not the Full Version!?
My son loved the "Ten Apples Up On Top" (Hardcover) book I borrowed for him from the library so much that I ordered a copy of our own. Thinking that the board book would be more sturdy, that's what I ordered. Never imagined that the board book could be only less than half of the full version, you can imagine the surprise and disappointement we had when we sat down to read it together. Now I know to compare the number of pages when I order. I wish there were some kind of clearer indication and warning about Board book version not being the full version somewhere in the Product Description.

An addictive classic
My daughter wanted this book read to her several times a day, every day, for months when she was two. It is wonderful, predictable text and teaches counting and rhyming. Dr. Seuss didn't put his name on it originally because it wasn't up to his standards, but it's still a great little kid book!

Counting Apples is fun in the car
My 4 yo son has several Suess board books in the car. They are sturdy and perfect for road trips. His favorite is 10 Apples Up On Top, because he loves to count, and this is a book that he can "read" on his own after hearing me read it once. He likes for me to read it to him too, because he loves the sing song rhyming of Dr. Suess.

Entertaining....with an anticlimax!
How many apples can you place on top of your head...one, two, three? This book is really fun. As a child I remember counting the apples "up on top" of the characters heads. With each turn of the page a new and more outrageous event takes place as well as the addition of more "apples up on top". Great for little hands
My son loves this book! (And the Dogs one too.) He is one year old and he can easily turn the pages. There are other board books that are the same size, but the pages are too thick for him to turn the pages by himself very well. He likes to carry it around with him. When he's not bringing it to me to read to him, I often find him sitting there looking at it by himself. Love the pictures! And it's an easy book to throw into a diaper bag or a purse for those down times outside of the house!

Adorable
I bought this book just so I would qualify for Super Saver Shipping. When it arrived, I flipped through the pages. The book is so cute and I love the pictures and drawings of the babies, they are adorable.

Oh, yeah, my God-son (9 months old) likes it, too. :c)

Great Book, Not Very Sturdy
My son liked this book and the Dogs book as a baby. We still read it to him, but now that he's a year old it isn't all that exciting. One note, it doesn't hold up well for those little ones who like to occasionally "taste" their books. I was dissappointed that it started falling apart right away...unlike other board books we have which are much sturdier.

Still a favorite
We have had this book for over a year and it is still one of my 20 month old daughter's favorites. We read it frequently and from the look of it you can see it is well loved. The babies are fun to look at and the words are appropriate for very young infants and toddlers that have short attention spans. I would say this book is a must for anyone with an infant just learning to listen to stories. It will stay around for a long time.

My Daughter's Favorite
This is clearly one of my daughter's favorite books, and has been for some time. The book is small (great for little hands) and the pages are easy to turn. She is fascinated by the variety of pictures of different babies. Our copy is well-worn and quite dog-eared, but has been quite durable given the heavy use.

I would heartily recommend this book, and others in the series, for any baby in the six to 18 month range. Younger babies will like the photos, and older babies will enjoy a book they can "read" on their own. ... Read more

The best beginner's book for children
If you want to help your children learn to think of reading as fun rather than a chore, "Hop On Pop" is the best place to start. I bought my son this book when he was two and a half and for weeks afterwards it was his favorite bedtime story. Seuss's genius in writing this enchanting book was in combining some hilarious illustrations which the kids love with easy rhyming words which encourage children to read phonetically. When a child sees the words "Ed, Ned, Red and Ted in the..." and he knows what sound "b" makes, the word "Bed" comes almost automatically. The story itself is appealing to all toddlers (what two-year-old doesn't like to hop on Pop?) and the rhymes are almost hypnotic. Read this book aloud enough times and you start chanting to yourself "Pup up, Brown down, pup is down, where is Brown, where is Brown, there is Brown, Mister Brown is out of town." (Your child will either look at you like you are nuts or join in enthusiastically.) Three months after I bought this book for my son, he was reading it out loud to me. "Hop On Pop" is a great way to get the kids started with a lifelong interest in reading.

Ed, Ned, Ted, and Red in Bed??
"Hop on Pop" and "Green Eggs and Ham" were the apex of Theodore Giesel's (Dr. Seuss's) creative genius. Hop on Pop is a rhythmic romp through the joys of reading, rhyme, and sight for babies, infants, toddlers, and parents alike. The work is both ageless and timeless. I read this book to my 4-month old and it never fails to get him squealing and wide-eyed in delight. Maybe he doesn't understand the subtlety and weirdness of three fish in a tree or a bunch of people in bed together but it was the sixties...besides their names rhyme, so there is fun to still be had in the PC 00's.

There are so many things to enjoy about this book, that it's hard to find a place to begin. The weird hybrid creatures, the creative rhymes and wordplay...my favorites are the thing that can sing a long long song. I break out in overblown Pavarotti-extravagance singing and the boy is sure to either laugh or look at me strangely...is this Dad or is this an alien? But the biggest joy of the book comes at the end when Seuss strings together endless rhymes with endless rhythm in the string of run-on words, "hethreemewepatpuppophethreetreebeetophopstop." It will be indelibly stamped on your brain and give your child the joy of reading as well as reminding you how truly fun words and pictures can be. Thanks for all times go out to the good Doctor.

The Poems are way too short
I bought Hop On Pop (1963)at Target drug stores around Dr. Suess' 99th birthday because I totally admire the books by Theodore Suesss Giesl (Dr. Suess)(1904-1991).But the poems are way too short.I don't HATE this book,but it's not really one of my favorites.The illustrations were well done but the poems wern't really much of poems.they just have two rhyming words then a sentance using the words.For example:"All/Tall/We are all tall".Sometimes there's a word in a sentance that's not in the rhymes(Example:"Pat/Sat/Pat sat on bat.").Sometimes they even use a rhyming wordthat is not used in a sentance(Example:"Ball/Wall/Up on a wall.").If you're gonna go buy a Dr.Suess Begginer or Bright And Early book,buy The Cat In The Hat (1957) or Oh,The Thinks You Can Think!(1975)because I like those two a lot more.

Babies have a lot to say, even before they can actually speak. Baby Signs are simple gestures that allow babies and toddlers to communicate what they see, what they need, and even how they feel. Research has shown that Baby Signs decrease frustration and tantrums and help your baby talk sooner.

When to begin: When your child starts to wave bye-bye.

How to do it: Show your baby the sign and point to the picture. Always say the word as you make the sign.

Improvise: Make up your own signs -- your baby probably will too!

Love it!
I realize that the signs aren't true ASL signs, but I find them easy to remember, and if my daughter wants to learn ASL later in life, I don't think learning some "wrong" signs will hinder her. In fact, many times the easiest way to teach them a sign is to assign a meaning to a gesture they already make.

Anyway, my daughter loves the book. It took awhile for her to start signing... the first one she did was "dog" (pant, or go woof woof... she says "a da!" but da can mean any number of things). Then we visited a friend with a bird, and I did the flap arms sign again, and something within her CLICKED. She flapped her arms whenever she wanted to see the birds.

The next day, she was doing the sign for "cat" and "fish". We watched Baby Einstein "Neighborhood Animals" video (the only one of the series that she shows any interest in), and when she saw a duck she went "quack quack" (sounds like guk guk guk) and started flapping her arms. She saw a bug that was flying and started flapping her arms as well.

If she sees a picture of a fish, she starts smacking her lips. I showed her the "one fish, two fish" book and asked if she wanted to read it and she smacked her lips for "fish".

We also use the back page as a "quiz" page, and I ask if she sees a dog (for example) and she'll point to the dog.

Granted the book doesn't have signs for eat, drink, etc... but using this book as a foundation to teach the baby that he/she can assign a sign to objects and animals, it's easy to build on from there.

Looks simple, but results are outstanding
My husband and I have been working on signs with our 14 month old son for about 10 months now. I'm not sure why (maybe the pictures in the book help him visualize another baby making the sign), but after purchasing this book and working on the signs in the book with him, he is picking it up so quickly. Within 2 days, he learned 4 new signs.

I think that the book offers children learning signs another perspective besides mom & dad making a sign. I want to get some of the other baby signs books by this author to supplement what we have gotten from this book. Even though some of the words aren't those that are 'essential' (like thirsty, hungry, eat, milk, etc.) the book does help your baby and you begin to communicate in this way.

A good guide
ASL should be presented in true fashion to the children. Five of the pictures shown are not true ASL.

Another expensive (baby) book
This book was not at all what I expected. It's simply an overpriced baby book. I thought this would help me to teach my son how to better communicate, well the words used in this book are so simple--I didn't need to spend the money to teach him what he already knows.

Nice, sturdy, attractive, useful!
What a nice addition to the Baby Signs collection ... a sturdy board book full of bright and attractive pictures of happily signing babies. Each sign has depictions of the object in question - for example, "hat" features babies wearing a variety of hats - and the opposite page has a baby making the sign with a note telling the parent what action is required - "pat head".

This is a very good way to get your little one more interested in signing. Babies generally love faces and this book is full of them, and it also presents an opportunity to learn more signs. Recommended for your little signer's library. ... Read more

The rhymes and silliness of this book make it a real winner!
Silly Sally is so very well done. My kids received it as a gift and it only took a couple of reads for them to be in love. They memorized the verse and began singing it through the house! What a delight -- even parents will have funn with this one as Silly Sally goes to town....

Neddy Buttercup walking forwards right side up!
A very fun book with great pictures. It is also really great for kids to act out and use their imagination. It can really get them moving. Bright pictures and rhyming text are just two of the many things I love this book and you should too! Can you rate higher than 5? =)

Great book for little ones!
My 7 1/2 month old adores this book. The sing song rhyming text amuses her like nothing else (I have memorized the story to tell when she's particularly grumpy). We love Audrey Wood and Silly Sally!

Good basic counting book
If your child likes Dora, this is a good book to have in the library. It is a board book, so it holds up well to wear. When my daughter likes a book she tens to read it over and over, so durability is important. I like the fact that she counts fruit, but some of the fruits are a little obscure for my daughter to remember- I've never seen a guava so I can't imagine how she will make the connection. I like having the numbers written in Spanish, and the phonetic pronunciation guide is helpful as well.

This is also good if you own any of the videos, because Dora counts a lot, and the repetion of the numbers is helpful.

Very pleasing
This is one of my two year old's favorite board books. The colors are wonderfully bright, and the pronunciation hints help me read the Spanish to her correctly.

Kids Like Dora
This book is fine for kids who like the "Dora the Explorer" TV program. However, there are two counting books that are superior: "One, Two, Three: This Book's for Me" by Dr. Seuss and "One, Two, Three: This Book's for Me" by Stuart Samuel.

Great Book!
Great book! It helps remind me of the correct pronunciation of the numbers. My kids love Dora (ages 2 and 4) and this helps me to teach them more Spanish.

10 Unforgettable Pages
I have always loved driving to the zoo on Wednesday when the entrance fee is waived, but I have never loved counting. This is exactly the sentiment my child expressed when I made my first attempts to teach him the single-digit numbers. Of course, such pursuits are hopeless at an early age until the child develops distinct fingers around his or her third birthday. When this happens, however, it is a very good idea to pull your child aside and teach him exactly what it means to live under a decimal numeral system. When that day arrives, be sure to have a book just like this one at hand. Now, when I take my boy to the zoo, he sees the bear and, regardless of quantity, shouts, "One!" fondly. "Two!" for the seals. It's wonderful to watch him grow.

1,2,3 To The Zoo
Teach your children how to "count 1,2.3" while using common animals found at your local zoo. The pictures are very creative and will help the listener have fun grasping the basic numbers 1 through 10.

My daughter has learned her numbers
My 15-month old daughter has learned some of her numbers withthis book. It is her favorite -- the numbers are large and clear, and the graphics are attractive without being too busy or distracting. I have checked this book out at the library so many times that it is time to buy it! Since there are no words, this is an ideal book for parents to flex their creativity and act out animal sounds or motions.

Not As Good As It Gets
We are huge Eric Carle fans and found 1,2,3 To The Zoo disappointing. The drawings of the animals were great but a little description of activity would maintain the interest of the child. i.e 1 Bear is Jumping Up and Down, 2 Seals are clapping their hands, etc.

We found the book very lacking and unmotivating for our daughter.

Sandra Boynton knows her farm animals. This simple board book, "a touch, skritch, & tickle book," will delight babies and toddlers (and probably moms and dads too) with its multi-sensory presentation of whimsical barnyard creatures. My 2 year old LOVED this book...
We checked this book out from the library for my 2 year old. He loved it so much that he memorized it and loved reading it to anyone who will listen. He is so funny reading it with so much feeling! We are expecting a baby in October and are buying it for the new baby from big brother. Then he can read it to the baby after it is born. It is a very basic book and not like Sandra Boynton's other fun wordy books, but I LOVE the animals and love that is is so basic for little ones. LOVE IT!

My 7 month old twins love this book!
I've been reading it to them for several months and they really enjoy it. When they were younger, they loved the colorful, large, simple pictures, and now, they can touch the "feely" stuff. They also really seem to love the rythmn of the words, and since I learned it by heart pretty quickly (not so hard since there are like 10 words in the whole book!), I often recite it during meal times and it always makes them smile.

The only thing that is a little annoying is the last page where you have to flip little cardboard covers to decide if you want to "Start over again with the Fuzzy Fuzzy guy." It kind of breaks the rythmn of the book, and I can easily see them getting ripped off when the boys are not too much older.

I just bought another copy to give to my sister and her infant.

My daughter won't put it down!
I bought this book for my daughter when she was 9 months old. At first it was just something else to try to chew on but after she figured out that she could feel the textures it has become her favorite book. She carries it all over the house and has us read it to her over and over and over again. This is a great book for toddlers and would make a great gift, too.

My son LOVED it
We started reading this to my son when he was just a month old or so, and he loved it - it was the first book that he reached out to "touch" the page. It was perfect for a very young child's attention span. As he has gotten older (he's now 10 months), he would sit and go through the pages himself, tapping each page in the appropriate place, until he ripped the egg at the end (okay - he chewed part of it too). I forgot about it until my father picked it up and showed it to my son and he got so excited!

Great for Babies
This book is perfect for young babies. It has large colorful illustrations. There is only one animal on a page which makes it enjoyable for babies to look at. It also has great textures. Beautiful
I recieved this book at a baby shower for my second child. It was actually given to my 3 year old daughter by my grandmother who did not want her to feel left out of all of the excitement. When I finally sat down and read the book to her, I cried so hard that I had to stop several times. It is a beautiful story of the love only a parent can have for a child. I cherish this gift and so does my daughter.

If my child could only have one book, this would be it
Max Lucado brings his writing talents to a children's book! In a soothing way, this book will tell your child how special he/she is as he grows up, and how his parents and God will always love him. My favorite line is "I am on your side." How many of us think to tell our children that we are on their side and that our goal is to help them? This book is appropriate for adopted as well as biological children, and single parents whether male or female. If every child had this book read to them daily, the world would be a much better place in which to live. My daughter loves it, and I love reading it to her. In the future, it will be included in every shower/baby gift. You absolutely cannot go wrong with this book.

my son misses his daddy
I bought this book as an after thought. I have a running joke with my 3 year old son that his hinney is mine and he tells me "no mom God made me and it's mine" Well my husband recently deployed and my little boy really misses him and is having some concern over is daddy coming home. I got the book to support the family joke, but got much more than I expected. I can't tell you how nice it is to have a really up lifting way to explain Gods love and mommy and daddy's love and how some day we will all be together, but in the mean time "just in case you ever wonder"...I will always be here for you ( even if daddy can't be). He asks me to read it every night. I agree with one review about the monster. He really noticed that page too. I think every child can gather strength and and a stronger sence of self from this book. I am now looking at getting them all.

Frightening Illustrations for Children
I read this book to my 22 month old daughter last night. It started out fine with a nice message. Near the end of the book there is a picture of a monster that scared my daughter so badly that she wouldn't come near me for the rest of the night!

She knew what she thought she saw and when I turned the page, she got a look of intense concern on her face. She turned the page back, looked at the picture and scrambled backwards and hid her face in my husband's shirt! She started crying and saying that she was scared. I guarantee she will remember the monster picture in that book for a long time and will think of it every time she is in bed with us sitting where she was when we read it.

The story seemed to get morbid at the end to me. It may as well have told my daughter that she's going to die, so am I and we will meet in heaven. I think she is a little too young for that concept. Had I read to the end of this book before I bought it, I would have left it in the store. From now on, I will definitely read to the end of every book I pick up before I buy it!

She Read it Over and Over and Over
I don't know exactly where this book came from, but it was sitting on my kitchen table this morning. Emma had one more book to read for her monthly reading award so we plunked down and started reading.

This board book is deceptive... it is written for a child: starting as a small baby and up to a teen and yet it can also be very much for the adult reading to the small baby up to the teen.

It describes how the parent loves the child and how God loves the child, asking the child to accept and know the answer to the question of whether or not they are loved "Just in Case You Ever Wonder"... and who doesn't wonder, "Does my family love me?" or "Does God love me?" or "What is there about me to love?"

Lucado lays it out beautifully for the child in each of us to know and treasure.

You will want to have a copy of this one around "just in case" a child wanders by who you might have the chance to sit and read for a while. You could even sit out on your front steps and wait for your neighbors to come out and offer to read to them for a spell.

I read it to Emma who then read it to two-year-old Sam and then to herself again and then to Sam again and then to herself again.

She started the day cranky and ended up going to school with a big smile on her face.

Terrific!
My kids got this book when they were about 6 months old. They loved the rhythm even then, and it's still one that they pick up and ask for now, at 18 months. I love it as a parent - I think the author is clever and talented!

It will make much more sense, both rhythmically and logically, if you remember to include the line on the back cover as the end of the book.

On some of her other books, she includes either definitions of the food or pronunciation guides - this has neither, so I may be butchering the words, but no one seems to care.

Fun for every sushi-loving parent
If you don't love sushi, you might not care about this book. But boy is it cute! And baby LOVES it (8 months). He giggles whenever he sees the ikura page -- I don't know if it's the fun illustrations or the clever words. But whatever, as long as he's happy. One day perhaps he, too, will share our passion for sushi.

I'd give this as a gift to any sushi-loving, parent-to-be.

Your baby will grow up with this story
I bought this for my nephew for Christmas when he was eight months old. He is now 15 months old and has it read to him every night. He loves this book. He often grabs it from his book table. It's the perfect book for small children - short, colorful and rhymey. Just remember that the book actually ends on the back cover, which I thought was a little strange. My sister has memorized this book since she reads it every night and so have I. I plan on giving this book at baby showers.

doesn't compare to Hola Jalapeno
I bought this because my two and half year old nephew has enjoyed Hola Jalapeno for many months and I thought I'd try something new. He loves to be read to but this one just won't keep his interest. I'll keep trying. Maybe when he's a bit older.

Amazing!

Another favorite from this author!
My son loves this baby character from Leslie Patricelli's other books. In this one, the baby can't find his binky (a common scenario around our house!). He proceeds to look for his binky in all sorts of places, like his cereal (which he dumps out) and his potty. It makes my son laugh. He loves when the baby finally finds his binky in the end. ... Good choice for very young children.
I gave this book to my 1-year-old niece about 6 months ago, and she absolutely loves it! She still has to read it at least once a night. She gets such a kick out of lifting the flaps to see what's hiding underneath. I highly recommend this book.

Never too early to add this title
I've read this book to my daughter since she was four months old. She really likes looking at the pictures and flaps. Other books, even classics like "The Runaway Bunny," have too many words to interest her, but this one has a very short, succinct story and great pictures.

Something tells me it's all happening at the zoo
Tis the ultimate interactive story for the young 'uns. An unseen narrator (who we assume must be a child of some sort) narrates a tale of unprecedented zooish generosity. After asking the zoo for a pet, a series of animals are sent in the hope that the child will want them. Unfortunately (and as the book makes clear) many of animals one finds at the zoo are inappropriate pets. Each animal that arrives is hidden beneath a flap. When you lift the flap the children to whom you are reading this tale are supposed to delightedly cry out the name of that particular animal. In this way, you can teach kids the kinds of animals that live at the zoo. For the narrator, though, elephants are too big, lions too fierce, monkeys to naughty, and frogs too jumpy. In the end, the narrator receives a small hamper with the note, "From all your friends at the zoo" containing the perfect pet.

As an early book, this story and its accompanying illustrations are very very simple. I was a little disappointed at the flimsiness of the flaps children are supposed to lift or turn. The copy I paged through had been scotch taped and re-scotch taped several times to keep the book in any kind of semblance of order. It is also a pity that the animals in this book aren't named ever. I don't doubt that kids will, mostly, be able to name them anyway, but it's nice to learn to read the names along with the pictures of the animals. Still, the book is satisfying to read. No subtext here. Nuh-uh. Just a very basic story about a zoo, some friendly animals, and the reasons (or lack there of) of keeping them. For another interesting and enjoyable zoo book, try "Good Night, Gorilla" by Peggy Rathmann (a personal pet favorite of mine).

Two years to 200 years - A Favorite
I have six little ones from 10 to 2. They have all enjoyed this book and now the older ones read it to the younger one's. I found my two year old reading it to herself from memory. What a treasure!

Great for Mom too!!!
This is an absolutely great book. My son loves having this book read to him while we commute on the subway in the morning. He never tires of it and especially loves the part about touching your toes, too small for basketball, and broccoli stew (ew!). It cracks him up everytime!!! Quite an enjoyable read.
We have a lot of fun acting out and describing things in the pictures and the language is so simple and so catchy that you can't help but have a good starrt to your day.

Great New Concept by a favorite author.
I love the concept of this book: there are so many bed time books but this is the first wake up book I have seen. I read it to my children every morning when they wake up. It's great because now we have a morning routine that includes reading as well. It is a little long for them now, but they will grow into it soon.

The pictures are great and the text is very funny as well.

Jaunty rhythms for the kiddies.
I love these books. My daughter loves these books. Boynton's books are cutsie-poosie for the kiddies, and they are hard to read without starting to sing.

There was one part that made me uncomfortable, though. I know this is going to sound hyper-sensitive, but it bummed me out when the narrator tells the little rabbit that he's too small for basketball. The book goes on to tell the elephant: "You're too big to use the swings, you should go do big guy things." The elephant looks despondent on the swing, like an eight-year-old with a glandular problem being teased by adults who think he's twelve. It made me a little sad. Why can't the rabbit play basketball and why can't the elephant ride a swing with the other kids? But, I know, it's just a kids book, I'm definitely missing the point, but I can't help what it made me think.

But your kid will love it. The rhythms are jaunty and fun. Enjoy.

Still love Boynton
I give this one a 4 only because it hasn't really caught on at our house like the earlier books (One Two Three!, Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs, Horns to Toes, The Going to Bed Book, etc.). It still has the fun rhymes and Boynton humor and I think it's a cute book, maybe it just has too many words for my under 4 crowd.

Just to add to the accolades...
As a teacher I use this book in morning circle time with a class of mostly non-verbal autistic preschool students, and it's hands-down the class favorite. The language of the book is so basic that we include a lot of introductory signs ("eat", "juice", "open") along with the movements, and basically move for the whole book. One of my students in particular has really had a breakthrough with this book - he makes us act it out all day! It's the first thing he's really learned to imitate, and about the first positive "fixation" he's had in class. It's wonderful.

And we love "broccoli stew - ew", too. Even my completely non-verbal, non-signing kids make an effort to get an "ew" out.

Just don't do what I did, and point out later in the day that a kid has beef stew for lunch! I tried that, got a worried look and an "ew" from a little girl, and had to spend the better part of a week convincing her to touch any part of her lunch again... oops. ("It's not broccoli!" Didn't matter to her.)

We want more Sandra Boynton!!! (By the way, my class also loves "But Not the Hippopotamus" and "Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaur".) ... Read more
