This tremendous trio of Margaret Wise Brown's tried-and-true board books is virtually guaranteed to delight babies and toddlers. The Runaway Bunny, illustrated by Clement Hurd, is a comforting testimony to a parent's unconditional love and protection: "'If you run away,' said his mother, 'I will run after you. For you are my little bunny.'" Goodnight Moon walks a child through a hypnotically soothing bedtime ritual of naming familiar objects in a room (and finding the little mouse that keeps popping up); and the melodic Big Red Barn, with illustrations by Felicia Bond, is a colorful foray into farm life: "By the big red barn / In the great green field, / There was a pink pig / Who was learning to squeal." In the end, the barnyard animals are all asleep, and if you're lucky, your favorite toddlers will be, too. A wonderful first-book collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give these books to every child in the world
These are the books your children will take to bed with them every night. Goodnight Moon has been my daughter's favorite bedtime book for 2 years, the one she HAS to have read to her before she can fall asleep. It must be the lyrical prose, and the illustrations that FEEL like a bedtime snuggle...this is the book I buy as a gift for every new parent.

Runaway Bunny is just beautiful, the watercolor paintings of a mother and child are fanciful and loving, and seem to come straight from a child's imagination. The theme is especially helpful for clingy children, reassuring them there will always be enough love to sustain them.

The Big Red Barn is simply the most enchanting book of farm animals I have ever seen, with lively colors and a story that intrigues my daughter so much, this is the first book she was content to sit down with and "read" all alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three children's classics in board form will delight
Originally written in the 1940's, these classic children's books will still delight your baby or toddler. The youngest baby is lulled to sleep by the gentle rhymes, and will enjoy the bright colors and charming illustrations as he or she gets older."Goodnight Moon" depicts a young bunny rabbit awake in his bed as he tells all the objects and animals he can see "Goodnight". He lists everything he can see, including his mittens, some kittens, and of course the moon. Toddlers will begin to appreciate the make-believe world of "The Runaway Bunny", in which a mother bunny tells her child she will be there to keep him safe no matter where he runs to. The bright colors of "Big Red Barn" are intriguing to little ones, and will help teach the names of many animals, too. The board books are ideal for the youngest readers, as they can easily help turn the pages. It is difficult for a child younger than 2 years old to turn the paper pages of most books. These are three excellent books to add to your child's library and start the happy tradition of reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars They don't call them classics for nothing
These three are terrific! I wanted to buy lots of classics for my baby and I was given this one. I could not have made a better choice myself. This is a great edition to my child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful - Just Wonderful
These books are wonderful. I started reading them to my sons as soon as they were born. My oldest is 3 and he can "read" Goodnight Moon to me. He looks forward to finding the little bunny before his mommy does in The Runaway Bunny and knows when to make the animal sounds before I turn the page in the Big Red Barn.

This collection is a must for all kids. You won't regret buying them for the years of enjoyment that follows!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the trio!
Big Red Barn is a BIG HIT in my house and my daughter is only 6 months old! This is followed by Goodnight Moon. She's a little too young for The Runaway Bunny. The illustrations aren't as colorful or fun as the other two, but I know when she gets older it will also be a favorite. Definitely recommend this trio for parents! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is YUMMY, other books are YUCKY
This is my daughter's favorite book. There aren't that many good opposite books out there and this one is wonderful. She loves books, but she could read yummy yucky and the 2 others in the series over and over. It is enjoyable for adults too-great illustrations and quite witty-you won't tire of it-believe me-we've read it about 8 times a day since we got it 6 months ago. It is indeed quite YUMMY!

2-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but not for everyone
This book has a cute premise and is adorably illustrated. Unfortunately, it seems the author didn't put much thought into making her work accessible to all families. She lauds fish sticks, burgers and chicken as "yummy," thus excluding vegetarians; and lists chocolate and blueberries as "yummy" making this book off limits to my food-allergic daughter. (Other highly allergenic foods listed as "yummy" include milk and eggs, which should NEVER be given to children under 1 year of age - and yet the drawings depict a very young baby...)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
We received Leslie's series (Yummy/Yucky, Big/Little, and Quiet/Loud) for our 12-month-old's birthday. They are absolutely his FAVORITE books and he never tires of them. The illustrations are amazing -- I'd like to have larger versions to frame and use for decorations in our nursery! The simple images and bright colors are wonderful for younger babies, while the broader themes and conceptual comparisons are great for imaginations of all ages. You can't go wrong with any of Leslie Patricelli's books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Page after page of learning and fun
This series of books are amazing -- 1) the illustrations are tactile as they appears to be done on canvas -- the texture of the canvas shows through so the illustrations are very interesting to look at + the characters and scenes are unbeleivably cute 2) the concept of opposites is well presented making it fun for young children too find opposites in their own world (and point them out) and 3) the books are simple -- my four year old "reads" these books to my two year old as she can follow what they say by looking at the pictures. A great addition to your "kid library".

5-0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated and funny
This is a great book for toddlers -- and it will make parents laugh, too. The illustrations are beautifully hand-painted, and kids like that they are simple, colorful and cute. It's a fun way to teach kids about what they should and shouldn't eat.
"Yummy Yucky" makes a very nice set with the author's other books (Big Little, Quite Loud), and I hope that they're offered together in a boxed set soon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the smallest child!
Are you looking for a good book to introduce a small child to the joys of reading? Then this one is a great one!

Long before I realized that babies are little sponges, someone gave me this book for my then first-born one year old (1968! ) Since then, this book has been a staple for all my children, the youngest now 8.

I have read to each child, before they were one - only one isn't as fond of reading as the others, but even he enjoys a good book now and again.

This book is the perfect book to introduce little ones to the joys of reading. The words are few and small, and the question is one of interest to little ones who are still trying to sort out what is going on in this new-to-them world.

The little bird falls from her nest while mother bird is out getting worms. She (or he) goes to every animal she sees and asks, "Are you my mommy?"

This simple story keeps the child's interest, because the little ones are concerned about what happens if they separate from a parent or caregiver.

In the end, of course (I doubt that this is giving away the story!) the bird finds the mother and all is right.

If you want your children or grandchildren to enjoy reading, this book is an excellent start. Expect to have to read it over and over, so well that you both will have it memorized!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, I am!
This book is perfect for toddlers who are just starting to appreciate illustrations. It tells of a young bird searching for his mom and asking each animal he meets, "Are you my mother?"

Kids can easily relate to the young bird's quest for his mom. He meets a kitten, a hen, a dog, a cow and a snort only to find out that his mom just got food for him and came back for him in their nest! The illustrations are simple, realistic and fun to look at.

A story with a valuable lesson: The importance of the mother-child bonding which transcends all beings in the animal kingdom.

1-0 out of 5 stars A CURSE! AN UTTER CURSE!
Many of you, "Parents", have exposed this book unto your families. Same thing with my mother. She exposed this story to me. But you know what I see in this book of evil? Scary images and ideas. Look at the dog for instance. Does he look like a "nice" dog to you? He didn't to me. He scarred the buttons of my shirt. Everytime I look at his eyes I fill with fear. But the idea of being seperated from your parents of the worst fear factor. AND in addition. NEVER EVER EVER BUY THE VIDEO THAT GOES WITH THIS BOOK! It has bizarre music that will stick in your childs minds while the sleep and haunt them. I had many nightmares about "Are You My Mother" and your kids shouldn't. NEVER BUY THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm fuzzy memories
A fave of mine as a young'un, this tender tale will tickle the funnybone and touch the heart as the adorable little birdling asks various animals and items if they are his mother (who went to get food for him!)LOVED the scene with the earthmover! Those who said it was scary and about child abandonment need to lighten up. :-) Who hasn't gotten separated from their folks when they were little (like by wandering off in stores and such)A must read for everyone's childhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mother of All Children's Books
Revisit the warmly inviting pages of PD Eastman's classic for a treat readers from four to forty-four and beyond will enjoy.

Whether it is your first time or your thousandth, the simple but delightful illustrations and familiar storyline of a little bird believing his mother is lost will wrap you in the cozy feel reminiscent of those half-forgotten feet-pajama winters and watermelon summers.

Not to be missed. Share it if you can with your favorite tot, but if not, read it to yourself. Read it aloud.

And remember: not every snort is your enemy. ... Read more

Like every Boynton book, this is a good book. The words rhyme and flow nicely, and the pictures are really cute, bold, and colorful. As its name suggests, this book talks about opposites "Big and small, short and tall." The major downside in this book is the words. They still flow nicely and rhyme without strain, but they lack some little charm that almost all of the other Boynton books have. Another reason for this is that it is a list of opposites illustrated and carefully placed so they rhyme. The pictures and placement of the words make up for the actual words however. My favorite picture is for the in/out, two turtles, one in its shell, and one standing on top of it. Every page has a cute picture. Also, the way the words are written, not the words themselves, is a wonderful thing. The big is written big, the small small, the tall vertical, and in the slow each letter is separated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I believe my husband and I enjoy reading these more than our 18 month old son enjoys hearing them. She is beyond funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
These Boynton board books cannot go wrong with the young-uns. My nephews and nieces ask me to read them over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really fun and educational
This was a fun way to teach my daughter about opposites and she enjoys it being read to her over and over and telling me the difference now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Humorous illustrations for a basic concept
"Opposites," by Sandra Boynton, combines colorful illustrations with a very simplified text in order to teach the concept of opposites to young children. Each page of the book contains one or two pairs of words that function as opposites: "big" and "small"; "heavy" and "light"; "day" and "night"; etc. The illustrations are delightful. Boynton uses a variety of cartoon animals (pig, snail, elephant, turtle, etc.) to demonstrate the meaning of each pair of words.

My only reservation about the book is that it seems to reinforce dualistic thinking into children. I know that "opposites" is an important concept for children to learn, but I also believe that children need to develop a more flexible way to perceive and describe the world. Boynton's "Opposites" gives no indication, for example, that there is a "room temperature" in between "hot" and "cold."

While I recommend this book for both its humorous artwork and educational value, I also recommend that parents take time to teach their kids that there are many variations between the seemingly irreconcilable opposites presented herein. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Children's Book!
I first read about this book in one of my parenting magazines and decided to give it a try.It has quickly become my 9 1/2 month old daughter's favorite book - she actually squeals with joy when I turn the pages and she sees the little boy and his teddy bear.I enjoy reading this book to her as it truly captures the unconditional love a parent has for their child.I bought several copies for baby shower gifts for my friends.I think this will definitely become a true children's book classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
I bought this book for my 2 years old daughter. Whenever I read this book to her, she will follow what the child does in the book. When I read 'I love your topside', she shows me her topside, 'I love your bottomside', she shows me her bottomside, and we have good laugh together until I finish the whole book. The illustrations are so cute that even I enjoy reading it. Simply wonderful book! Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect lesson on love
I bought this for my 17-month old daughter for Valentine's Day and she loves to have me read it to her. The illustrations of the little boy (great also for object lessons on fingers, toes, ears, nose, hair, eyes) and his teddy bear are charming and the story reinforces a message of the unconditional love parents have for their children. Overall just a wonderful book. Friends and family will be receiving copies along with their baby shower gifts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Snowy Day Review
"A Snowy Day," by Ezra Jack Keats is a true classic. The story is about a child named Peter. Peter was a city kid who woke up one morning to discover yhat the entire city was blanketed in snow. Seeing this Peter begins to engage in activities that any small child who grew up with a snowy climate would engage in such as: making footprints in the snow, striking a snow-covered tree in order to knock the clumps of snow off of the branches, making snowmen and snow angles, and sliding down a snowy hill. He ultimately sets it off when he stuffs a snowball in his coat pocket. This is a great book due to it's real like partrayal of a child and the significance of snow in his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magic, Wonder, and Possibilities.....
"One winter morning Peter woke up and looked out the window. Snow had fallen during the night. It covered everthing as far as he could see..." Peter can't wait to jump into his snowsuit and run outside. There are footprints to make and watch as he walks along, snowmen to build, and angels to carve into the snow with his arms and legs. There are mountains of heaping snow to climb and then slide down, again and again, snowballs to pack, and snowball fights among the bigger kids to watch. And after a long cold, wonderful day outside, there are warm and cozy snow dreams to dream until he wakes the next morning to another fun-filled snowy day..... Originally published in 1963, Ezra Jack Keats' The Snowy Day, is still as fresh and inviting today, as it was forty years ago. Mr Keats' gentle, engaging text captures the essence of the child in all of us on a snowy day, and is complemented by his simple, expressive and evocative, award winning illustrations. Together, word and art brings all the wonder, magic, and imaginative possibilities of a big snowfall to life on the page. Perfect for preschoolers, The Snowy Day is a captivating treasure, to read and share now with friends and family and future generations in the years to come. A MUST for all home libraries, this is a timeless classic that shouldn't be missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very cute, and the illustrations are lovely
I agree with other reviewers that the story in this book isn't heart-stopping exciting and it does drag on a bit toward the end, but frankly, I'm not sure that's a bad thing. The slow, languid pace of this story makes it a very calming and relaxing bed time read. The chunky, colorful illustrations are adorable, and the fact that the little boy is not very detailed makes him sort of a child's "Everyman." The story is really about a little boy whose imagination is maybe a little too big for the fact that he's only 4 and not able to do everything he'd like, but it's cute and engaging and well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let it snow (y day)
When "The Snowy Day" first came out, it was considered groundbreaking. Unprecedented. Here, at last, was a picture book in which the protagonist is black. It's not an overtly political book, mind you. Just a nice story about a kid in the city playing in the snow. Having heard about this story for a long time, I decided now was the moment to see how well this book has stood up over time. Ezra Jack Keats has long passed from idle picture book author to a somewhat god-like figure of the children's book world, so does this early work stand out even today? If it was introduced for the first time now, would it be considered as good as it is? Yes and no. The book is both a fabulous creation, and a very simple, very normal, tale that everyone on one level or another is familiar with.

In this book, Peter wakes up to discover that snow has covered the city in the night. Delighted, he pulls on his bright red (and now world known) snowsuit and plunges into a day of exploring and playing. He makes fun tracks, and hits snow off the branches of trees. He constructs a smiling snowman and slides down steep mountains of snow. At the end of the day his mother gets him out of his wet clothes and gives him a nice hot bath. The next morning the snow is still there, and an ecstatic Peter calls up a friend to do the whole day over again.

When I was a child I loved (and still do) stories that took place in the big cities. Keats never draws an inordinate amount of attention to Peter's surroundings. So while you won't see skyscrapers or taxi cabs, there's a distinctly urban feel to the lay of the land. The text is nice and easy for the youngsters to understand. As for the cut-outs, they're a delight to look at. Picture books featuring cut-outs may be remembered best as belonging to such artists as Eric Carle or Leo Lionni, but I consider Mr. Keats to be the granddaddy of the art form. Aside from the beauty of the landscaping in this pictures, I loved the papers used in the book. The section in which Peter sits on the snow, a snowball embedded on his chest, the black sky is a-swirl in greens, blues, and browns. When Peter slides down a snow covered embankment, the sky is then a delightful twisty series of white smoke-like curlicues. And Peter's home itself is eloquently rendered. From the wrought iron bed frame to the multicolored wallpaper and tiles that enhance the setting, the book is the best possible combination of elegance and realism.

If it came out today, "Snowy Day" wouldn't garner an overly enthusiastic response from publishers and critics. Which isn't to say that it's unworthy of the praise already received. As I've tried to show, the book is a wonderful amalgamation of text, pattern, and emotion. One of the finest books written for children, and a great evocative story.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Snowy Day
The Snowy Day is a great book for kids of the age 4-6 years old.
The book is about a little boy who has a great time out side. He plays in the snow making snow angles and snowmen and many more great things. He try's to have fun with older kids but he seemed to not fit in.
He soon learns that not all things are here to stay.
The book is not one of the best books out there but the pictures are pretty. ... Read more

I look forward to the time that my son really enjoys me reading this book. This is not one of his favorites nor is it frequently read my house but still this is an excellent book. I think that my son might be a little too young for this book at the moment but I keep bringing it out and reading it to him hoping that he will finally be into this book. The Sesame Street books were favorites when I was a kid so I know they will be for my son too. I recommend that this book be for a child over the age of 2 because at 18 mos this book still has little interest for my son. For young ones try Sandra Boyton books, mouse paint and Winnie the Pooh Sweet Dreams books.

5-0 out of 5 stars children of all ages will love this book!!!
We first found this book when my nephew was born, over 18 years ago. He loved it so much we had to read it several times each time he was at our house, so we got him his own copy. We still had to read it when he came over and his parents read it to him every night(no skipping pages allowed, no matter how many times we had read it !). Both copies were completely worn out. We have been looking for more copies since then. It is surely a sign of how good this book is that it is nearly impossible to find in used book stores.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved this book!
This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I can still remember reading it for the first time while in line at the grocery store and thinking it was the funniest book in the world. It would make a good bed time story and would be fun for a parent to read to there child because it is very exciting for a kid. I highly recommend this.

Kids love it. They think it's hysterical. Anytime you find a book that they love, it's a good thing. Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Monster From the Very Beginning
Of course, to see a person's amazon.com blurb on a novel (or novella) such as this one, you would estimate the person's age to be either that of a parent, such as say 26 or 32, or that of a small child, perhaps four or even six. However, considering my spelling and grammar in the first sentence, you can probably deduce that the latter is not applicable. As for the former, I've got a ways to go.

Basically, I'm a college student who was so profoundly touched by this work of book that I must stress its greatness to those generations that look up to me so dearly (yes, all of them). Essentially, the repeated reading of this book at an early age for me created a lens through which all other works of suspense were viewed and interpreted. Needless to say, Hitchcock never did it for me, and waiting for twists at the end of "The Twilight Zone" was like waiting for crust at the end of a piece of pizza.

No, not a single work of suspense could top this one. Told in the most ominous second person, protagonist Grover implores the reader not to turn the pages, for there is, as the title may suggest, a flesh eating virus hidden within the pages of the book itself. Just kidding, there's actually a monster at the end of the book, and if you wish to ignore the age-old adage that "curiousity killed the cat," then you just might find this out for yourself. (I, on Grover's recommendation, did not in fact turn the pages for several months after starting the book, until my mommy assured me that it was okay. Needless to say, I trust my own mother over a Muppet.)

At the risk of giving away any scant fragment of the ending, I must cease my review here. But be forewarned, the trip to the end of the book will be a thrilling one. I'm aware that Sesame Street has released some rather predictable works before ("Cookie cookie cookie starts with C?" Thanks, Cookie Monster, for the thoroughly engaging spelling lesson), but this is not one of them. Fasten your seatbelts kids, and turn the page.

If you dare!

No, seriously, turn the page. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Very Lonely Firefly
My children (ages 2&4) adore this book. The text is a bit boring, but they look forward to the last page. They also have a tendency to leave it open, and the batteries have been replaced twice in the last 5 months -- (it takes 4 batteries that retail for $2-3 each, and I've only been able to find them at one electronics store). This seems to be too much maintenance for a children's book -- especially given that we enjoy Eric Carle's "no-maintenance" books just as much or more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great First Bedtime Book
I've been sharing this with my daughter since she was about 7 months old. She was a little antsy the first time through, but when we reached the lights she fell in love with the book. It is her favorite of the Eric Carle books (although she really likes sticking her fingers in the holes of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.) My daughter is now 20 months old and asks for this story every night. Her vocabulary is growing with each rereading and she is able to point out most objects (firefly, candle, lantern, dog, cat, flashlight, lights) to me. I am surprised at how much she enjoys it and find this is one book I don't mind reading every night.

The batteries are the only problem. The first set finally died after a year of steady use, and the second set didn't last very long. (I suspect she left the boook open all day.) I am having trouble finding replacements that don't cost more than the book, but the book is so enjoyable I don't mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Lonely Firefly
My children love this book. The flashing lights for fireflies at the end is the icing on the cake! We have been out for the past 4 nights catching fireflies in a jar (and then letting them go) to watch them glow. My boys (ages 3 and 5) love all the Eric Carle books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it!
Okay, don't even hesitate on this book, just buy it! The fireflies light up at the end of the book and there just couldn't be any child anywhere that wouldn't be thrilled with this book. Mine just played and played with it and couldn't put it down. Still is one of his favorites and has to be read VERY frequently! This is such a cute, cute book and very well done. Plus, it has fireworks in it - another household favorite! It goes through and shows the many things that light up at night, explaining them very well. Just grab it and run - you won't be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Where Are You?
The Very Lonely Firefly is a good book. This firefly is in search for another. He shines his light to attract others but can never find anyone. This book keeps you in suspense. He always finds a light but...It's never a firefly. To find out the ending of this book read The Very Lonley Firefly! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter knows how to give a HUG!
I am a mother of 1 year old. My daughter likes the book very much. She hands it to me at least 2 or 3 times after I read several times to her. THere is only one word HUG in the book and I have to make up a story for her. I enjoy doing so. Every time after saying HUG I give her a hug. After trying a few times, she knows how to give me a HUG! The feeling is wonderful! Also, the pictures in the book is beautiful. Must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Preschool
Once again, Alborough does a fantastic job with his child-friendly illustrations. This simple one-word picture book invites preschoolers to read ALONE and takes them on a baby monkey's adventure to find his own mother's 'hug.' Sweet, inviting, and most importantly, an independent read for pre-emergent readers, I highly recommend it to teachers and parents of young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, simple story with precious illustrations
Parents wil find this a more interactive book to read w/ their children, because most of the text just says "Hug!" but it's the illustrations of this baby chimp and other African animals that tell the story.

The little ape sees other animals (esp. mommy animals and baby animals) hugging, and wants a hug, too.

There will be a lot of pointing, "look at the hippos! look at the zebras!" and lots of hugs when this story is read. Very sweet, and a great goodnight story to read to your kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS AWESOME
I read this book to my 2 year old every night & she loves it. In fact, when it's time to go to bed we say, "Are you ready to go see Bobo?" and she runs to the door yelling "BOBO BOBO". She knows the whole story I have made up to go along with it and says it along with me. The illustrations are clear and she loves picking out the animals and telling me the sounds they make. Most of all, she loves it when Bobo and his mommy are reunited.

5-0 out of 5 stars totally loveable
I love this book. We checked it out at the library and my little 14 month old won't let me put it down. Since there are only three words that are repeated through the whole book, my 4 and 5 year olds love to "read" it, also. The story line is simple and sweet. We've already had to renew this book three times from the library and I've decided to just buy it. ... Read more

Nina Laden's illustrations in this simple, rhyming board book are truly magical. The format is straightforward: on alternating two-page spreads, the words "Peek a" are repeated, opposite an illustrated page with a die-cut hole, behind which lurks a cow ("MOO!"), a green ghost ("BOO!"), and a mirror (you guessed it, "YOU!"). The youngest readers will delight in trying to guess who--or what--is peeking through the window, and can easily grip the baby-fist-size holes to turn the pages for the answers. The picture of the "ZOO!" is fabulous. Through the hole, all that can be seen is a wild pattern of colors, stripes, and spots. Turn the page, and find a wild kingdom of animals, one in front of the other: peacock, zebra, penguin, cheetah, elephant, and more. Ready for more peekaboo fun? Try Nina Laden's Ready, Set, Go! . 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a beginner "reader"!
This is our 11 month old's favorite book! The bright pictures and the simple fun text really grab her attention when many other books have too many words per page or pictures that are too complex. She loves to help turn the pages and this one seems particularly easy for her to grab each page. We think this is perfect for when you are just beginning to read to your little one. It helps teach both parents and baby the joys of storytime.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book we have!
My son has loved this book since we started reading to him at 3 or so months. He has learned to turn the pages (and since the text is so short, I can read it before he turns!) He loves the bright simple pictures and especially the mirror at the end. He always kisses himself, it is SO cute. Course, now he kisses anytime he sees his reflection. This book is wonderful for the simple text and great pictures and the predictablity (a great pre-reading skill!) Our son is 10 months and will sit and "read" it to himself now! A must have for any child's nursery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only book my 8-month-old picks from her pile
My daughter Giana loves to read along with this book! She's acquired about 50 books so far - thanks to her mother's love of reading and some very generous friends - but this book is the one she always grabs. The pages are colorful and easy for her to help turn, the rhyming is cute, and apparently the taste is great, too, because she often ends up using it as a teether...

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite!
My two children love this book. We have fun making noises that go along with the words and it's been a favorite book for four years now! A good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
Wow,

I'm a positive thinker so I got this set for our daughter when she was still 8 months old. Now at 18 months, they're so used we've had to duct-tape the bindings. OK all you parents, throw out the videos and gadgets and RUN straight out and buy these books. The color, the layout and the quality are all terrific. OK, I'll admit that our girl seems to love books best of all, but these are by far her favorites. She really started taking them seriously as soon as she touched them. The pictures and they way they are categorized make for fun learning and they worked so well, we had to buy the bath time versions just to get her to put them down in the bath.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great books! Wonderful for autistic kids!
My son is autistic and we have several books from this author, but this set of 3 is my favorite! There are so many wonderful pictures and the pictures are of things that are very interesting to little kids. I've also used many of the pictures in these books as part of our PECS program. My son just loves these and even my 6 year old daughter likes to try to read the words in the books. They're so sturdy they'll last me through my infant son's childhood as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars among childrens favorite
Our kids will bring these books to us over and over pointiong to animals objects and look at us waiting to hear the name of the object. It's become one of our favorite things to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great books for any kid!
My son is 18 months, and these have been his favorite books for a long time. Compact, a good size for him, and good for travelling. The photos seem to appeal more to my son than the cartoon graphics in many childrens book.

They are so popular with my son, that they have been used so much that they will need replacing before too long. Not that this any problem with the books themselves, just heavy use!

You cannot go wrong with this set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome books!
These books are so great!! My twin girls got them when they turned one, and they have learned so many words from them! They can name so many different things! The animal book is also really great! The only complaint I have is that some of the pictures are so generic that it is really hard to even tell what it is, but that is really hard to do in a book. That is when you go and get the real thing and show it to your toddler and name it for them!! They do put some less common things in them as well, though, to really challenge them and expand their vocabulary. There are a few animals in the Animal Book that I hadn't even heard of!! These are great for the car because they will keep your toddler occupied for a while. They will flip through the book naming everything!! I was amazed at how fast my girls learned so many words. They are 22 months, and they know all their letters, all their colors, all their shapes, most every animal and its sound, and I think these books have helped them learn a lot of those things! I don't even know how many words they know, but they pretty much know everything in all three books! These are their favorite books and have been for months and months. They will not get tired of them quickly because there are soooo many pictures! This also makes a great gift for a first birthday! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Abridged, but wonderful for babies
We have both versions of this book: the abridged board book, a favorite of my 20-month-old; and the original extended version, a favorite of my nearly 5-year-old, who can now read it all by himself. They both love it. The board book version, while abridged, is very, very well done. The words are rhythmic and catchy, and from a very early age my son and daughter have both run around the house yelling "Go, Dog, Go!" Toddlers generally lack the patience for the big version - the board book is a fantastic and accessible way to introduce them to the fun of words and language and such concepts as stop and go.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Book I Ever Read
Although my parents frequently tell me I was reading from cereal boxes and newpapers before this, the first time I vividly remember reading a book was sitting in my Aunt's lap and happily stammering through "Go Dog Go." The many colors of dogs and the way they got around intrigued me as a four year old and my (no pun intended) dog eared copy of P.D. Eastman's Suess-like rhymes stayed on my shelf for a long time after I'd grown out of this leavel of learning skill. Get it for your youngsters, it will make them happy to try and follow along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Green Dogs, Red Dogs, "Do you like my hat?" - Vocabulary
This was one of my favorites as a child. It became a favorite of my daughter's as well. Now my son is hooked on it.

The book starts simply. "Dog" is the only word on the page. That sets up the theme.

We quickly are taken through comparisons and colors. Black, white, red, blue, yellow, green, in, out, up, down, big, small, stop, go, over and under. Add some simple numbers and the book gains real substance.

But then we have the two plots. First is the "Do you like my hat?" story that runs to the book's conclusion. The other is dogs on the go. They run around, go to sleep, wake up, drive away fast, and finally all congregate at the top of a tree.

Great Eastman illustrations and fun vocabulary will entertain most children

1-0 out of 5 stars More dishonesty from Random House
Look at the cover of this Bright and Early Board Book...does it say "Abridged" or "Adapted"? NO, to discover that fact, one has to look carefully at the fine print on the inside of the cover. And even then, what Random House says is "Originally published in a different form as 'Go Dog Go'" instead of a more honest "Abridged and Adapted from 'Go Dog Go'". This is deceptive marketing at its absolute worst. If this were food for the stomach rather than food for the mind, the FDA would long ago have ordered Random House to cease and desist this sort of misleading behavior or face the consequences.

I am old enough to remember the difference between a book labeled "by P.D. Eastman" and a book labeled "by P.D. Eastman (Abridged)." There was a day when publishers felt compelled to be honest about their product, which allowed us consumers to easily make an informed choice about what we wanted to buy.

I for one still want that choice from publishers and urge any and all of you who care about books to not purchase this Random House Bright and Early Board Book, at least until they are a little more honest in their practices.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Dr Seuess
This is a great introduction to the wonderful world of Dr Seuss. It's short, it's fun and the premise is less reliant on a child's comprehension skills than many of the other Dr Seuss book. My son has loved this book since the age of 18 months, when the likes of "Cat in the Hat" were too long or confusing for him. It always makes me smile too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take this book to the grocery store
We found this book at the library and I'm buying my own copy. It is colorful, has the alphabet in capital and lower case letters, AND they managed to find a fruit or veggie to go with every letter! There is also a section on the pronunciation and a little history of each fruit/vegetable in the back of the book (library edition).

My boys are 3 yrs old and have been coming to the grocery store with me since birth. However, they are also starting to become picky eaters. I plan to take this book to the grocery store and we can learn alphabet letters and find the produce items to match. Maybe I can even expand their taste preferences as we try a new "letter" each visit. Now if they just had a little cookbook to go with this book.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book to teach fruit, alphabet and colors
My daughter liked this book. She learned the alphabet, colors and some names of fruits. This book has it all. Good book for 3 years and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Excellent! All three of my children adored the board book version of Eating the Alphabet. It provides a nice way to expose toddlers to a variety of interesting fruits and vegetables -- they get a kick out of repeating words like "jicama" and "jalapeno". Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious!
The board book version of this title is cute, but treat yourself ( and your child, too!) to the full-sized hardcover edition. It's a feast for the eyes! Yum!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice
This is a very nice board-book. The illustrations are bright and eye-catching, featuring all the usual fruits and vegetables as well as some of the more exotic ones. Each letter is printed in both upper- and lower-case, as are all the names of the fruits and vegetables (Yy YAM yam). It would be an ideal gift for a vegetarian or vegan family as it shows absolutely no animal products! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great children's book from as early as age 1!
I bought this book for my neice's first birthday, and she loves it! The pictures are wonderful, and the text is written in Boynton's usual melodic style--my neice certainly seemed to respond to the sound of others reading the words to her. The story describes five birthday monsters arriving and taking over on "your" birthday; although the monsters themselves aren't scary, young children who can comprehend the story might become upset by certain scenes (eg, the monsters eat all "your" cake!)--but of course, there is a happy ending. An engaging, fun story for young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Boynton Book!
My daughter loved these books when she was a baby, and so did I! Of all the Boynton books, this is the one I like the best. The story is adorable and the cadence is catchy! Every time I see a copy of this book, the story is fresh as the first time I read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing special
If you like Boynton's books, you'll probably like this one too. My son is more of a fan of her "Opposites" or "But Not the Hippopotamus". It's OK, as far as children's books go, but Boynton has done better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book
I bought this book for my son's first birthday and it is so fun to read! He is just starting to sit still for a story and this one seemed to hold his attention-probably because of the quick pace and excitement that the monsters demand! I tend to read the monster parts really fast and louder than the rest of the book. And I like the illustrations because we can count balloons and different color hats etc as we read the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny story as long as you explain to your child
My daughter thought this book was funny but at the end she was wanting me to ensure her that no monsters were going to come on her birthday and eat all her cake, and open her presents! But after explaining to her about these books being for fun and pretend she has really grown to love this book and telling people that there really are not any birthday monsters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very calming
My son is a very active 9 month old. There is only one other thing that maintains his attention. THE WIGGLES! God bless them! I read him this book every night to ease him into bed. He loves it! The rythmns of the spanish language work perfectly in this story. It never fails to calm him down. He loves the colors and the images in the book as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good for small kids...
I haven't seen the english version of this book, but I bought the spanish one for my daughter whom I'm trying to raise tri-lingual. She loves to read it at bedtime and by now (she is 2yrs, 3mos.) she even knows the phrase that goes with each picture on the page. Maybe it's not as colorful as the english version is suppossed to be, but so far it's worked great and it's her favorite book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful in Spanish, too!
Although I can't figure out exactly why, my boys love this book! This book is just as appealing to children in Spanish as in English. The illustrations are simple but my boys love them! They also really like the repetition. When we read it, I always add a "Buenas noches" to other items on the page. This has really helped expand thier vocabulary. It is one of my boys favorites, as it is for most children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soft and Gentle Words
Remarkable tranlation of the original. My children adore "Goodnight Moon," and have me read it to them every night before they go to sleep. When they aweken, they read to each other the bilingual (Spanish/English) book, "Drum, Chavi, Drum! Toca, Chavi, Toca!" These two books are my children's favorites. One makes them fall asleep, the other has them singing and tapping the tumbadora sounds... I think my children will either become sleep therapists or musicians!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful bedtime book
As American of Cuban descent, it is very important to me that my son learn Spanish. Teresa Mlawer did an excellent job with the translation. She was able to keep the spirit and flow of the original text, although she had to change a couple of things here and there and lose some of the rhyming, which is to be expected. It still has the same soothing musicality of the original, which makes it a great book to read aloud. I love reading this to my 8 month old son as part of our bedtime ritual. And no matter how fussy he's been before I start, he always settles down when he hears the first line. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your usual Dr. Seuss - but terrific!
My daughter is a huge fan of this book - and so am I! I won't say that about too many children's books... As cute as some of them are, I can only make so many dog noises and elephant sounds in a day (over and over). But this is a book that we both agree on.

First of all, the book is beautiful. The colors are great. I love the illustrations. They're colorful but subtle, not your normal "in your face" Seuss (of which I am a fan).

Second, the book is just the right length for a toddler. Some of the other Seuss, while funny, is long. This is just about perfect.

Mostly, however, I like the message of this book: that you can be in one mood one day and another mood another day and that's okay. I think really small children, especially toddlers, have a difficult time understanding the concepts of mad and glad and sad... We expect them to be "on" at happy all day long. But they really are just little people and they experience different feelings, too. I like that this book says that's okay.

Yeah, the message is a little "touchy feely" but the book doesn't come across that way at all. It's Seussy-y without the camp, but with the same sense of rhyme and optimism. It works.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated book and unlike any other Seuss
My Many Colored Days was written a long time ago, but Dr Seuss felt that he couldn't adequately illustrate it. Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher provided paintings which add incredible dimension to the text.

The result is a wonderful visual metaphor for presenting the gamut of emotions and a clever way of talking about feelings with one's child, whether it's a grey day and we feel down; a yellow day where we're busy as a bee, or a mixed up day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
When I read this book to my children (ages 4 & 1) I always try to emphasize the emotions & feelings behind each color & painting using my voice...I think it is an excellent book for opening up a dialogue with kids about their emotions & learning how to express them.

The paintings are inspiring but ordinary in a way that when you look at them you think "I could paint that!". Really a great, great book! It's a continuous favorite in our house, a must have for every child's book shelf!

I recommend the board book for younger kids because it IS so well loved & read. The images on the pages definately call out to be touched by little hands!

5-0 out of 5 stars tomorrow could be different
I would highly recommend this book to anyone--young & old alike! I think it is especially good reading for those feeling like they are in a slump and finding it hard to move on. This book shows that today you might feel like it's a black, brown, or purple day, but if you hold on until tomorrow, you may have a yellow or pink day. Although this book was purchased for my two toddlers, who both love it, this is a coffee-table book at our house.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 10 month old's favorite book
I wouldn't have expected it but this is my 10 month old son's favorite book. I think he likes the bright colors. Also the way the text is written inspires you to change your voice which he really has enjoyed. The bright colors, simple but cute graphics, short and rhyming verse all combine to make a really neat book. This is the first book that my son has really showed interest in, he actually coos and babbles and touches the pages as I read it to him. He sits through the whole book and likes it to be read to him more than once every day. I've tried "Goodnight Moon", "Guess How Much I Love You", "The Runaway Bunny", "Mother Goose", etc but no other book has fasinated him so far as much as this book. I'd highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very clever, well-illustrated book!
This is a very clever book, with comparisons such as "Ladies are big, lady bugs are little". The illustrations are beautifully hand-painted, and kids like that they are simple, colorful and cute. This makes a great set with the author's other books (Yummy Yucky, Quite Loud), and I hope that they're offered together in a boxed set soon.
