"I want a book about basic camping..." Duh!
I had a friend who wanted to learn a few good knots.
Another friend on how to pick a campsite.
Yet another with questions on what to pack, choosing a tent...

"How do I cook this?" "How did you get that fire going so
fast/ high/ hot?" "How the hell did you know *that*?"

The Boy Scouts of America, folks. While what I learned was
largely experiential and through suffering trial-and-error, the
Boy Scout Handbook is *the* reference for what you need to know
about going out into the woods, by yourself, and coming back out well-fed and well-rested.

Map reading skills. Tent site evaluation. Furniture building.
Cooking. Packing. Hiking. Camping, fishing, rowing, fire making, ax handling, first aid, moral rectitude, and common sense. Forget any other specialized book until you own this handbook and have committed it to memory. Until you can say you know every technique in here, you don't have the right to move on.

Review for the official Boy Scout Handbook
This book would have to be one of the most usefull books i have ever owned. If you are a boy in Scouts this book is the key to success. This book shows everything from tying knots to how to survive in the wilderness. This book is definately essential for a scout striving for his Eagle Scout honor. It has helped me on my path to eagle. I would definately reccomend this book to others to read and most definately to boys in scouting.

A great book for a Boy Scout, and a handy book for anyone.
If you're a Boy Scout, you have to buy this book. Period. It has everything a scout will need to know contained in it.

If you're not a Boy Scout, it's a handy book to have around. Any time you need to know a good knot or hitch, advice on hiking, camping, or outdoor cooking, or the best first aid instruction, you can find it in this book.

AN ESSENTIAL BOOK !!!!
I bought the Tenth edition. It has so much basic informtation on Campfires, Cooking, Ropes, Knots, Hiking, Backpacking, Cycling, Swimming, Safety Tips, Canoeing, Observing Nature, Physical Fitness, Ecology, Leadership Skills, and much, much more.

Maybe there are more complete books out there, but this one is VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND BECAUSE IT IS WRITTEN SO THAT ANY 11-YEAR OLD BOY CAN UNDERSTAND IT...

One of the Most Useful Books Ever Written

A great outdoors book.
This book is a must-have for anyone who's interested in outdoor activities including camping, hiking, and outdoor cooking.

By the title one might think it's some kind of cub scout guide to campfire songs, but it's nothing of the kind. It's full of great information on hiking, camping, cooking, knots, and so much more.
