Fun and Rewarding
My 5 year old is just learning to read and was very encouraged with these books. The books have a system where you first go through the book with the child, looking over the pictures and talking about them to let the child get an idea of what the book is about. Then you let the kid give it a shot. When they are successful in reading the book (they are all very short and funny), they get to put a sticker on a sticker chart. The box of books also comes with a certificate to fill out and a blank book where they can make up their own book/story with mom's/dad's help. These books sure gave him confidence with the success he was having reading each and every book. I'm not sure how much he was reading and how much he was memorizing (probably a bit of both), but he sure had fun with it. I highly recommend these books. ... Read more

Great confidence booster
When we received this set, my 5-year-old wanted to read all 10 of these books right away! The Brand New Reader system is a great way for new readers to gain confidence in their newly-developing reading skills. Great Beginnings!
What a great book for beginning or struggling readers. Children have been very successful with this book. I love the length of the story and the characters are delightful. My favorite features are the Introduction for each book, a strategy used in Reading Recovery, and a part called, Helping Your Brand-New Reader . I've bought the whole collection for my first grade readers. Great series!

Great Readers
What a wonderful idea for beginning readers! Children need books like these in order to feel successful. The size of the book is perfect for small hands to hold. The repetitive story line allows children to be successful while reading the book and the book uses familiar sight words. The surprise ending makes the book fun for children, so they will want to pick it back up over and over again.

The illustrations are adorable! Children will enjoy each and every one of them beacause they show the actions on each page so clearly.

Here Comes A New Reader
An incredible begining book for a first time reader. My daughter 4 yrs. old picked it up and began reading, really reading for the first time. The relationship of words and illustrations make the book easily understandable, fun to look at and easy to follow along with for first time readers. A fun read to boost confidence
These simple stories are loved by my children, age three and five. My five year old, just learning to read, loves the fact that he can pick out certain words which are often repeated, as well as look at the pictures, and 'read' the story without help. The gentle humor is just right for this age group, and the illustrations are sweet. We read our Winnie series almost every night and the kids don't get tired of them. I highly recommend them for all beginner readers!

Great Book for children learning to read
WE checked this book out at the library and both my 2 year old & 5 year old loved it. They read out loud along with me and then insist on reading back to me by themselves. My 2 year old cried when I told her that we had to return it, that of course our family now is buying it for our own collection.

This series of four booklets show the main character, a giant dog named Winnie, as she goes through her day, interacting with her family. If you own a dog, particularly a big dog, you will feel as though you are seeing your dog in the story. The basic language that is presented in repition, make these booklets a delightful way for the new reader to get started and experience immediate success. I intend to give the books to a fiend of mine who teaches 1st grade.

Just what we needed!
My daughter is going into kindergarten and she is already reading (I think this has a lot to do with her using the Reader Rabbit Complete Learn to Read System.) Anyway we needed some books that had:

1. limited vocabulary, especially words that can be sounded out (this makes her proud) 2. repetition (to reinforce new words she just sounded out) 3. minimum pages (let it be over before she gets bored) 4. interesting story lines
