5-0 out of 5 stars Can't believe baby loves this book!
This book quickly became a favorite for my baby daughter. She's now 4 mos. old and the Snappy books have been favorites for nearly two months. She loves the bright colors and action.

I am so pleased to find that there are many more of these books available, as our local store only has two and we got one other as a gift. We will definitely be purchasing more of these books!

5-0 out of 5 stars a super pop-up book!
I was really impressed with this line of pop up books!!! This book has bright cutely drawn bugs, and the pop-ups require no tabs to pull -- just open the page and the critters pop up! And I do have to say, the durability is about the best I've seen around! These books aren't totally indistructable, but the are very sturdy. This was the first pop-up book we bought for our son (16 mos old). We had thought, "give our son, a pop up book? you've got to be kidding". You're talking the the parent of a boy whose motto is, "If it's not coming, I just must not be pulling hard enough!" He just doesn't understand some things aren't meant to be pulled apart. But these books have survived very well. I still supervise him with them, the ones that did get ripped...just needed a little tape, and the pop-up still works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pop-Ups
This is a great pop-up. The pictures are fantastic and my 3 yr old loves how the pop-ups move.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite of the Snappy series
We own many books in the Snappy line of pop-up books. This one is my daughter's favorite (followed closely by the Dinosaur book). It's one of the only books where I have to say that I will read it "Just one more time". I think that insects, spiders and worms hold a special appeal for the very young.

It is well-loved, but does not have rips and tears like our lift-the-flap or pull-tab books. So far I haven't had to repair this book at all. The Snappy books are the only pop-up books we own that actually look "gently used".

The bugs are drawn in such a way that they are identifiable, even by a small child. The pop-up actions differ from page to page, making the illustrations seem fresh.

What I like best about this line of books is that the pop-up figures "work" without the use of pull tabs. Just opening the page causes the pop-up figures to rise from the page. This makes these books a little bit more durable than our pop-up books by other publishers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for ALL ages!
We own many of the Snappy book series and Snappy Bugs is our favorite! The illustrations and colors are engaging and the pop-ups are creative and whimsical. I enjoy it as much as my 2 1/2 year old and 7 month old do. We never tire of reading it together. My only caution for those who have never purchased a Snappy book would be to realize that these are books for young children and parents/caregivers to share together--the pop-ups can be pretty delicate and if you're not careful, your book will be destroyed in no time. I highly recommend this book for anyone with small children. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Its cute, but be careful
I bought this book for my two 1/2 yr old. She loved all popup style books. But this book you have to be careful with. Each page had a different style of pull out, pop up. But the paper is very thin and tears easily. Not for a child to look through them selfs. Even as an adult I have to be very gentle with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Educational
A co-worker handed down a used copy of this book to my 2-year-old daughter. It immediately became her favorite, and we have read this book every night (at least once per night, sometimes 3-4 times) for the last 3 months. She loves working the flaps, and it has held up very well to her 2-year-old hands. She practices counting the bugs on each page and will predict which bugs are in the box before we open it. She thinks the pages are funny --- especially the "Four fast fleas" which disappear when you open the box and the "Ten saw bugs" that have to be kept locked in their box least they get out. She has enjoyed this book so much we'll be buying other David Carter pop-ups for Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book for the very young reader!
.
Really cute and fun book for the very young!

Children love this book because of the pictures, colors, good story, and the pop-up action pieces.

A good reader can easily embellish the story to make it more fun! My kids loved this book when they were very young, now (4 and 5 years old) they will read it for fun and to practice their independent reading.

The book has:

......Colorful pictures
......Pop-up action pieces
......Short sentences
......Short, easy words
......Cute Story

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to love books

5-0 out of 5 stars one of my son's favorites

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching teamwork through Cucumber Soup!
I think that this is a very innovative book. The illustrations are gorgeous and the integration of math is great! I think that this book could be used to student's benefit when introducing class rules and presenting the idea of teamwork in a classroom. It is good for younger children because of the repetition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cucumber Catastrophe
I thought this book was delightful! The counting reinforcement is excellent for children and including facts on the insects involved is a neat idea.It does not take away from the story because they are off to the side and you do not need to read them each time through. This story teaches a great lesson that even those small in size, can complete mighty tasks.Wonderful idea to include a recipe. What child isn't going to ask what cucumber soup is and how to make it!This book has nice illustrations! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite of mother and son
When my son was born, I immediately began to look for Early Bird, but it seemed to be out of print. Luckily, my mother found my copy and it has become a favorite for a new generation! The simple humor captures the imagination of my son as much as it did mine. Typical of Scarry, there are so many different images to spark discussion. The illustration (pictured in the Amazon entry) of the family eating dinner alone provides endless opportunity to discuss foods, health, nutrition, etc. I HIGHLY recommend this book and I am so happy that it is back in print!

5-0 out of 5 stars revisiting own childhood
This was one of my favourite books as a young child and I am really pleased to be able to find a copy to give to my own daughter for her 2nd birthday. I think the pictures are great and the book has a good message about making friends. I still get a warm feeling when I think of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad It's Back
"Early Bird" by Richard Scarey was my 25 year old son's favorite book as an infant. He delighted in learning the names of the different animals and in the story itself. Now that he's going to be a father I can think of no other book that he would like to treasure and share with his new baby. I am glad that it's back in print so I can send it to him as soon as possible so another generation can enjoy the delights that Early Bird brought him. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Read Again and Again
My 3 1/2 year old son loves this book. The pictures are so detailed, he can alwasy discover something new. When he first read it, we looked for butterflies on each page. Now, he enjoys looking for snails. The text and illustrations make it suitable for much older children, so I know he will continue to enjoy it for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated by Ian Jackson
EDC Publishing offers three outstanding Usborne "picture puzzle" titles beautifully illustrated by Ian Jackson for children with an interest in nature and wildlife that are as fun and they are informative. In The Great Animal Search (0746017391, ...) there are some 100 animals to spot and identify on every double-page of this oversized book. Each scenario showcases a different part of the world and the wildlife that lives there. In addition to countless hours of puzzle solving fun, there is a wealth of fascinating animal facts presented in succinct, easy-to-read captions. The Big Bug Search (0746027036, ...) follows the same format, only this time for insects ranging from hairy spiders and black slugs to dragonflies and leafcutter ants. With The Great Undersea Search (0746023413, ...) the focus in on live under water in the various puzzle pictures ranging from coral reef to ocean depths to sunken pirate ship, and more. With all three books, should young readers (or their parents!) get stuck trying to find all the hidden things, their are answers in the back. This wonderfully presented, magnificently illustrated series is especially recommended for home schooling curriculums, rainy day pastimes, or long road trip diversions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another "fun science" book for the early reader!
These "Are you a...?" books all present sound backyard science in plain kid-speak, inviting early readers to enter the spider's world in a humourous and engaging way.
My daughter, who's 6, and a beginning reader, loves the way these books don't talk down to her. They're easy, but not babyish -- just the right combination for building a love of reading that will last a lifetime!

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing spiders
"Are You a Spider?", by Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries, is a good book for children. The collaborators use a simple text and appealing, colorful illustrations to describe the lives of spiders.

The text opens, "Are you a spider? If you are, your mother looks like this and spins webs." The reader is thus invited to put herself/himself into the spider's place. The book illustrates the process of building a web, and shows other essential aspects of a spider's life. Overall, a very informative and enjoyable book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ladybug's Birthday
Since I am an elementary school teacher, I always buy my nephew theme presents for his birthday. I happened upon this book while looking for an offbeat fiction book about ladybugs. It was surprisingly entertaining. The plot is very positive as ladybug's friends take turns solving problems they have caused by bringing additional guests to her birthday party. The text is kid-pleasing with lots of alliteration (family of flighty fireflies, sprinkling of spindly spiders, etc)and predictable language. The illustrations are simple, yet bright and eye-catching. It is part of a Scholastic series called "Side by Side, Books for collaborative reading". According to Scholastic, "the structure of the text encourages taking turns because it combines a read-aloud book with an emergent reader, which results in true collaborative reading". Although the emergent text has been highlighted, is much larger than the read-aloud text, and is isolated on the left hand page, I'm not sure how well this book would work as a true emergent text. The reading levels rise sharply after the very simple introductory pages. This is a small quibble as the language is engaging and predictable and young children love to chime in to "read" a book whether that involves true reading (decoding the words) or merely repeating memorized words. The book has 29 pages so would be most appropriate for children aged 4-6. ... Read more

This distinctly Mexican version of an old fable found in Spain, Portugal, and France is retold and updated by a well-known storyteller. The little red ant has found a wonderful crumb, but she's not strong enough to carry it all the way home. Going from one creature to the next, asking for help, the little red ant is surprised to discover who is the strongest of all. Spanish words add to the text's Mexican flavor, and bold, playful illustrations, hinting at what's coming next, make this story a real "page-turner." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I picked this book up for my nephew's birthday because I remember loving the story of the little old lady who swallowed a fly when i was a kid. I was in a hurry at the store, so I just grabbed it off the shelf and went on my way.

When I got it home and finally had time to look through the book, I was amazed at how fantastic the illustrations are! I read the book and realized all over again what a great story this is. I know my nephew will love it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Old Favorite
My aunt used to sing this to me when I was little. I always got such a kick out of the song. Now I enjoy sharing it with my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny...
An enjoyable book to read and enjoy with your child. I don't think you can get through this book without singing the words and lots of giggles.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Know an Old Lady
This was my favorite book when I was younger. 'I know and old Lady' is a very good book. It tells about how and old lady swallows a fly. After that she swallows a spider to catch the fly. Then she swallows a bird to catch the spider, she swallows a cat to catch the bird, she swallows a dog to catch the cat, and she swallows a goat to catch the dog. She swallows a cow to catch the goat and then she swallows a horse to catch the cow. This is a very good and funny book. In the back of this book it even has a song that can go along with the book. The song has a very cute tune to go with the story and children will enjoy singing it. When I read this book the first time I remember that I really enjoyed it and I wanted to read it over and over again. I would recommend this book for children of any age. They can also sing along with the song. I would suggest that you read this book because I really enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very fun read
This book is great. I have another version of this story and this one is by far the better of the two. The pictures are full of detail that add so much to the silly little song that so many of us know and love. This story includes the whole song for the story instead of just a part of it as some books do. The pictures add so much by showing the old lady chasing and catching the animals. It's all done in such a silly way as to not scare a child but just to make them laugh. I think most children would really like this book. ... Read more

My four-year-old son and I are both BIG fans of the First Discovery Book series. We own a handful of these books, and if finances would permit, we would own them all!

Book Description

"I don't know much, but I know what I know. I gotta go! I gotta go! I gotta go to Mexico!" The creepy-crawly bug doesn't know why she does what she does. She only knows she has to do it. But making the journey seems impossible for the slow-moving critter, who has no idea what or where Mexico is. Then an everyday miracle occurs, bringing a transformation that will help her fulfill her destiny. Each autumn, millions of Monarch butterflies migrate from the central and eastern United States and Canada to colonies in the mountains of Mexico, where they mate before flying north in the spring to lay their eggs. In simple, jaunty text and pictures, Sam Swope and Sue Riddle celebrate the amazing story of one of these intrepid bugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Class Loves Gotta Go!
I am a kindergartener from Morgan Hill, CA. My uncle, who lives in New York City, gave me the book and I loved it so much I brought it to school for Reading Day. He's helping (making) me write this. So far it has been our all-time favorite book of the year, all the kids in my class can't wait to take it home to read it to their brothers and sisters and their parents and grandparents. My teacher loved it so much that she has ordered several copies for our school library. I'd like to give Gotta Go! Gotta Go! 100 stars but for some reason that wasn't a choice. My parents took me to see the Monarch butterflies near the beach and they were dancing in the sky just like in the book. It was very exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Get! Gotta Get!
This book is wonderful! The illustrations are superb and the book simply draws in the young listener. The book is suitable for ages 4 and up, and is the best book for young nature lovers that explains simply the lifecycle of the caterpillar. This book easily compares to the Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, but is much more suitable for the pre-school and early elementary age child. It is better than books describing the Monarch butterfly, as the illustrations are just incredible. A must buy for the nature lover in all kids! Gotta Get! Gotta Get!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute as a bug
This is a simple and charming story of a caterpiller with an urge to travel to Mexico. Her neighboring animals tease her (it's too far), but she recedes into her cocoon, emerging as a beautiful monarch butterfly, and proves them all wrong by flying south.

The story has a winsome sing-song refrain ("I gotta go, I gotta go, I gotta go to Mexico!") that children will love, and simple engaging line drawings. I'm impressed that the basic science in the story is accurately presented - the stages of the butterfly's life, its migration, its mating (gingerly and sweetly handled as a "dance" between butterflies) and its eventual return home.

My daughter loved this so much we donated a copy to her pre-school, where they watch monarch butterflies hatch in a terrarium every year. A big hit with the 3-to-5-crowd!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This is one of the best children's books I have read in a long time...my kid's love hearing it and I don't tire of reading it again and again....

Wonderful because it tells a true 'nature story' in such a whimsical way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Factual, entertaining... what more could you want?
Gotta' Go, Gotta' Go is a wonderful book about a monarch caterpillar and his lifelong "journey." I am a nature center director and we use this book to teach about the magnificent monarch migration. The book is entertaining, fun to read out loud, and best of all, factual.

Eric Carle's book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is a cute book, but he did us all a disservice when he wrote that butterflies come out of cocoons. Butterflies hatch out of chrysalis, moths hatch out of cocoons. This book by Sam Swope has the correct information.

You'll love it, your kids will love it, and your kid's science teachers will love it when your child already knows one of the major differences between butterflies and moths. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bug stuff for kids
Our kids loved this book! Not only was it written well enough to keep their interest but it left them wanting more! The descriptions were detailed enough for young minds but did not become a lecture so that they "glazed over". It made our kids enjoy their learning time. The illustrations were large, detailed and numerous. This book was great for the ages it was written for and even younger; as our three and five year olds loved the pictures and started asking questions right away! This was an over all great book to help get a kid's thirst for learning started! ... Read more

"So tiny, yet the closer you look, the bigger she gets" perfectly captures Dream Weaver, Jonathan London and illustrator Rocco Baviera's evocative, hypnotic picture book about a little boy watching a tiny yellow spider, in the up-close-and-personal vein of Verdi and Stellaluna. If you're quiet and you really listen, can you hear the spider's feet on the sparkling web?Baviera's ultramagnified, crayon-pencil illustrations make you feel like it might be possible. The spider's web shimmers with the slightest wind, and a "raindrop on a fallen leaf is a forest pool." Magically, this talented pair manages to make the little yellow spider's webbed world soothing bedtime fare--the young boy goes home from spider gazing to dream about weaving a web of his own to catch fallen stars and return them to the night sky.(Great read aloud, ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for toddlers and young children!
This book is about the life of a spider from the point of view of a young boy. The illustrations are vivid and the text is like a young boys handwriting to add to the overall "vibe". Our son is fascinated with bugs (including spiders) and this has become one of his favourites. Everytime we read it, he goes on the journey with the young boy as he watches the spider and follows it through weaving a web, having the web accidently hurt by a hiker, then helping the spider to find a safe place to weave another web. Included at the end of this book are a bunch of facts about spiders for older kids, or younger kids who are greatly interested. ... Read more
