Book Description

Follow the life of one ladybug as she journeys from the egg to adulthood.

On a warm, sunny day at the end of summer, a ladybug lays her yellow eggs on a leaf. Soon, each egg hatches into a tiny larva with a huge appetite for aphids. Despite the dangers of ants and praying mantises, the larvae grow big enough to create hard pupae around themselves. When they break through the pupae, they are ladybugs at last.

In simple, poetic text and vibrant illustrations, this nonfiction picture book explores the life-cycle of the most beloved beetle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Educationl Text
I'm a teacher and I find the Eyewitness books highly educational. I like the way the concepts are presented in a form without backgrounds. This gives clear facts to the reader without over taxing the attention span. The books are highly informative, presenting difficult concepts in comprehendable chunks that stimulate interest. I have almost the whole collection for my own children and they LOVE them!

5-0 out of 5 stars this will interest children in insects
This would be a great book for use in elementary school science classes. It has a wonderful layout, with many beautiful photographs (if insects can be called beautiful). The text, mixed nicely with the pictures, covers basic information on insects as well as various interesting facts. ... Read more

It's Christmas Eve and Miss Spider should be feeling full of cheer. But even in her cozy home, among wrapped gifts and the brightly decorated tree, there's something missing. It isn't until Miss Spider finds a friend with whom to share the joy of the season that her one Christmas wish comes true.

David Kirk's much-loved Little Miss Spider (Little Miss Spider, Little Miss Spider at Sunnypatch School, etc.) continues to warm the hearts of her fans in this touching, jolly holiday tale. Young readers will enjoy the image of Miss Spider and her new friend Asparagus Beetle making "snow butterflies" (like our snow angels, but made with lots more legs) and dashing through snow tunnels "mined by the mice." Kirk's startling and shiny illustrations complement his singsong verses to present this tender Christmas message of compassion and friendship. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Storyteller
My little niece literally devours the Little Miss Spider series -- and sometimes, no review beats a two year old's reaction. On glossy paper rich with colors and gorgeous illustration, the simple story of Little Miss Spider on yet another adventure hypnotizes my little niece. This book is great for any young child who loves to read and enjoys being read to. Simple word play and rhymes are fun and interesting. The book itself is very small so it can be handled easier with children's hands and additionally, it isn't too long to induce tedium or boredom. All in all, it's a great little stocking stuffer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that touches the essence of fatherhood
In this book, where a young father shows his garden world to his daughter, one touches both the magical and the spiritual. Neither is mentioned, but both are there in the rich prose and wonderful paintings. The children I watched hearing it were caught up in the magic and the wonder of the discoveries. And they were quiet with my tears when I read of the dirt that never quite ever washed off the young father's hands. I was remembering my own father's hands that never quite ever lost that earthy stain. Would that every father-to-be recieve a copy of this work that exemplifies the ultimate essence of fatherhood - that "nothing in my father's hands would ever hurt me." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My twins' favorite book
This book has been the favorite of my twin 17-month old girls since they were about 9 months. Their favorite thing to do is to try to bite the caterpillar's head off as I'm reading them the story. I read it to them in the voice of the caterpillar from A Bug's Life and they think it's just hilarious. Sometimes, I even ad lib the story line as they try to grab the caterpillar and bite him (and my finger- ouch!).

I'm not all that big on the story line personally, but they go into laughing hysterics everytime we read it, so by that count, it's a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a cute book!
This is by far my children's favorite book (ages 1 and 3). They are always grabbing it and wanting people to read it to them. My 3 year old will say the lines being read. They both laugh while my husband reads the book in a funny "caterpillar" voice. It's fun and interactive.

The bases of the book is this little caterpillar is trying to figure out what he is going to be when he grows up and what is right for him.. in the end he figures it out :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!

4-0 out of 5 stars HERE'S THE BUZZ

How pleasant to find a children's book about an insect without anthropomorphic illustrations.Patricia Wynne's illustrations are bright, sunny, and accurate, allowing young readers to have a close up view of bumblebees as they really look.Done in watercolor and ink, her drawings of the differences between queens, drones, and workers are especially fetching.

Author Sayre's text is spare with informational asides, such as the number of species of bumblebees, their stinging habits, how nectar becomes honey, etc.The author haschosen to relate the life spanof one queen bee, tracing the bee from early spring when she is underground to emerging and building her colony, and finally the birth of new queens and drones.

Youngsters may well be surprised at what one small bee can accomplish, and develop a healthy admiration for nature's creatures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!!
I read this book to my son's first grade class and became the most popular "mom reader" around. For a group of mostly city kids who don't generally think about squishing around in the muck on purpose, this sweet, smart story opened the children's minds to the wonder and beauty of nature, and gave us all some gross (and cool!) things to ponder. The author did a wonderful job of telling a simple yet poignant story about growing up, learning from the world around us, and sharing our love and knowledge with family and friends. The illustrations are equally amazing. And the kids and I loved learning all the names of the different types of dragonflies at the end. This book makes me want to be the kind of mom who isn't afraid of anything gross!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and illustrated!
I can't say enough good things about this book. The story is compelling and well written. The information is factually correct and presented at just the right level for precocious preschoolers and young school-age children. And the art is absolutely stunning. I wish there were more children's books like this on the market--books that are able to combine good storytelling with interesting and accurate information. This is the stuff that makes kids want to read learn. I'm going to buy it for the library at my daughters' school and for everyone I know with a child between the ages of 4 and 8.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent
Magnificent! This book makes you want to get out, muck around in a pond, ask questions about the wonder of life and go "wow?" The story of a little girl that follows the transformation of a nymph into a dragonfly is not only a metaphor for her own growing up, but it is a wonderful demonstration of the natural curiosity we need to cultivate in children. Eliza learns about dragonflies, nymphs and the importance of asking questions. Philosopher Abraham Heschel wrote that "under the running sea of our theories and scientific explanations lies the aboriginal abyss of radical amazement." Author Susie Caldwell Rinehart found a way of keeping that amazement alive and making it accessible to children. The illustrations in the book are works of art. There is hardly any white space in the book as page after page come alive with color. I liked the additional information, list of further readings, and web sources at the end of the book for curious little explorers. A great book. Every child should have an "Aunt Doris" who responds with a "magnificent!" to the creatures that make most of us go "eeeww." ... Read more

Vivian Walsh and J. otto Seibold (Olive, the Other Reindeer,Penguin Dreams) createanother winning, whimsical world in Gluey: A Snail Tale. The story beginswhen a bunny named Celerina finds a beautiful, empty house and moves right in.Little does she know, a snail named Gluey lives there, too, fixing all thehouse's cracks as carpenter snails like to do. One day, Celerina breaks a vase!Gluey tells her he could fix it, but his voice is so soft, she can't hear him. That night, he slowly repairs her vase. As this sort of gluey alchemy continuesto happen, Celerina becomes more and more convinced her house is magic. Shedecides to have a tea party to prove to her skeptical friends that dishes wouldbe repaired before their very eyes in her enchanted house! Of course, when theparty derails into a plate-breaking free-for-all, the house itself collapsesinto pieces. Seibold's sophisticated, retro, stylized illustrations and colorpalette are no less than fantastic, and Gluey is perhaps the cutest children'sbook snail of all time. Children will be crushed by the injustice Celerina showsGluey, then overjoyed at the end when they become friends. (Ages 5 and older)--Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book!
My 3-year old twins and I (and any adult listening to us read it!) LOVE this book. We also are big Olive fans, but I think this one surpasses even that wonderful tale. I would highly recomment this delightful story to anyone who likes quirky, unconventional, but sweet books for their kids. Very creative and fun, but with a solid message about making presumptions about others. Great illustrations, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars very unusual
kids will be enthralled with the wonderful pictures..
and the story is so odd, yet the friendship between a bunny & snail is totally groovy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gluey Rules!
J.otto is one of the finest children's illustrators (and web animators) and he and Walsh have outdone themselves with Gluey, a Snail's Tale. J.otto's style is bright, attractive, and compelling. His pages are full of humorous details that children and adults will love to examine. The story of Gluey reveals the fallacies of superstition and quick judgments, and lauds hard work, friendship, loyalty, and reconciliation. A great book for everyone to enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A really fun book to share with your child.
I bought this book for my three year old daughter because we love Olive the other Reindeer so much. This book is in the same vein with similar quirky illustrations. My daughter can follow most books geared for 4+ years old but she lost intrest in this one about half way through. The story is a bit complex and presents some jokes that are above her head. For instance there is a play on words. The word wee is used to mean small as in wee people and to mean together as in we did it together. The story is primarily about Celerina the bunny and Gluey the snail. Gluey the snail lives in a house and takes care of it by repairing it when things break. Celerina the bunny moves into the house not knowing Gluey the snail lives there. The two peacefully coexist for awhile with Celerina unaware of Gluey's existance. Whenever Celerina breaks something Gluey repairs it for her during the night. Celerina decides it is magic and let's her friends destroy the house to the point where Gluey can no longer fix it. When Gluey first catches Clerina's atention she chucks him over a fence intio a garden before he can tell her it is he who fixes the house. The next time they meet and Celerina realizes her mistake it is too late and the house is beyond repair. Fortunately for Gluey and Celerina the wee people who orginally built the house work together to repair the house back to it's orginal splendor. There are a lot of lessons at work in the story. You should not rush to judgement about someone you have just met the way Celerina does with Gluey and team work gets things done as in the case with the wee people repairing the house. This book is a little complex for my daughter but I know that when she gets a little older she will love it. It was fun for me to read too. The book has wit, humor, and heart just like Olive the Other Reindeer. I think any four year old child or older will have no trouble following the story and enjoy it as much as I do. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages!
This is a fabulous book for insect and photography enthusiasts alike. The 3-D effect is so real it is like the bugs are sitting on your nose! My 14-year-old nephew likes the book and so do my adult friends. All of Blum's 3-D books are highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book with stereo 3-D photos!
BUGS in 3-D

I highly recommended this book for school children and adults alike.

I was introduced to one of Blum's books by a friend and liked it so much that I sought out and bought all of his 3D books. I find the price so reasonable that I've since bought more to give as gifts.

I enjoy looking at the 3-D photos as much as my seven year old son so I already know several adults as well as children who will be getting this book as a gift.

The technical quality of the photos and printing of the books is very good. A magnifying, stereo viewer is built into a unique bi-fold cover of the book A little research showed that this idea is well over a hundred years old (like stereo photography) but I still find it very innovative because it is so rare and unusual.

The photographer has an inspired eye and top technical skill. The macro photography is amazing. If you buy this book hold it high with your head back when you look at the close-up of the Zebra Tarantula (plate 4). It will freak you out like your about to be eaten! Then go to plate 40 and look at the beautiful butterfly.

The writing accompanying each image adds to the photos with just the right amount of scientific and general information to serve both young and old reader. I like this book very much and I hope you find this review helpful. I recommend looking for the other 3-D books by Blum. They are all great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine example of Macro Stereo Photography
This is a wonderful book. Well designed, with fine viewer and sharp photos. A real bargain for the price. I'll need to collect the whole series. If you are familiar with stereo photography, this is a must have. If you think 3-D means added shadowing, this is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another GREAT Mark Blum Book!
Mark Blum is clearly a very talented and skillful nature photographer! His books, including BUGS IN 3-D, are all FABULOUS! I can't recommend this book highly enough!

In BUGS IN 3-D, you will be shrunk to the size of a grasshopper, taken off to exotic forests, and introduced face-to-face to some really amazing insects! It is just like entering their world! INCREDIBLE!

The photography is exquisite!
The 3-D stereo effect is remarkable!
The subject is fascinating!
The price is bargain!
There are NO negatives about this book!
Children, parents, science students, naturalists; I can't think of anybody who won't love this book!

BUY IT!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids
The publisher has unfortunately tried to market these fabulous works as childrens books (not that they aren't wonderful for kids as well), but these photos are truely amazing both in the quality of the photography, but also in the presentation. They are printed on very high quality coated paper with a STURDY set of lenses built right into the hard cover, which allows you to view them in all their splendor without any additional equipment.

These are not red/blue lenses! The images are presented in true color stereo pairs and when viewed, merge into a single, dynamic 3D image - WOW! I can't say enough about the overall quality of viewing for ADULTS as well as children.

The price is another thing that confuses me. I don't know why these are so inexpensive? I urge anyone who loves nature to buy all of the books in this series! ... Read more

Hello, this book is very realistic compaired to the
movie. I am a big fan of The Simpsons, but I still
love A Bug's Life. This book does have 96 pages,
perdectly following the main story. The illistrations
are beautiful, and almost as good as movie. OF
COURSE we can't copy every single quote from the orig-
inal movie, but this book IS A MUST FOR LOVERS OF
A BUG'S LIFE!!!...

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a buggy world!
My 2 year old son loves this book! He was in a phase where he wanted to watch the movie over and over and over and over again. In an effort to get him off the TV, but still into the story, I ordered the book off of Amazon.com He loved it so much we have purchased more of the Disney story books. They're great!

5-0 out of 5 stars This was by far one of the best books out there!
Ok, I just have to start off by saying that this book and the movie that goes with it are by far the coolest things that Disney and Pixar have come up with. They are funny, heartwarming, and educational as well. Here is Flik, a kind ant that wants to do good for the colony and make a difference. However, Flik's got one problem... he's a bit of a clutz... he shows children and adults that standing up for what you believe in and never giving up is the best way to live life. I'm fourteen, I love the book and the movie, and I WILL be seeing the movie, as well as reading the book, again and again. The wonderful story of the young ant Flik who wants nothing more than to make a difference in his colony and win the heart of the beautiful Princess Atta has touched my heart, and I garinty the same with you.

3-0 out of 5 stars A short and cute book
This book has animated scenes from the movie. One is of Princess Dot and the other of Hemlich. The pictures are animated well and motion blur helps the pictures seem realistic. My only complaint is that the book is too short. It needs more scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up from Heimlich
As a kid I made my own flipbooks. Starting in the corners of math textbooks I later graduated to 4" by 5" index cards. Now I'm happy to find one of the scenes I animated from "A Bug's Life" in this flipbook (Heimlich chomping on a leaf on the way to Ant Island). There is also a really fun bit of animation of Dot from a very talented animator, Karen Kiser. I only wish they would make more of these books, from "A Bug's Life" and other animated films. Flipbooks are the simplest way to look at animation; frame by frame, page by page. I highly recommend this book for anyone (especially kids) interested in animation. And for anyone who is a fan of "A Bug's Life." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wings of Change teaches an important lesson.
Back when he designed his first school, Frank Hill did all the right things. He talked to the faculty members about their programs and goals. He studied all the literature about the future of education and educational technology. He met with the school board to discuss its vision for the district. Then he integrated his research into a building that was the school of the future, primed and prepared for all the educational changes and progress everyone had outlined to him with such enthusiasm.

The educators took one look at the plans and declared they didn't like them.

"I thought, 'what went wrong?'" Hill said."Then I realized it wasn't the design, it was the changes it would require.People are afraid of change. It's human nature. So I had to figure out how to assuage their fears."

That was 15 years ago.Hill, an urban planner and president of Hill and Associates of Bellevue, has learned quite a bit about the fear of change and what to do about it; enough that he has designed or redesigned more than 60 schools, each time matching the design to its future, not present needs and, each time, running into people who thought those changes were a fine idea, until they realized they were the ones who would have to adapt to them.

Hill decided the easiest thing to do would be to simply give them a book on overcoming one's fear of change. So he wrote one.

All Ages:
"Wings of Change" (Illuminations Arts, Bellevue, illustrations by Aries Cheung) is a book for children, actually. But its principles can apply to any of us.In it, a good-natured caterpillar named Anew is quite happy with his life. Then his friend Faith, a snail, explains that changes are afoot.Anew doesn't understand. But Faith reassures him, "As the world turns, so do you. When you change for the good, you change the world, too."
Anew starts having odd dreams. In one, he decides he can fly.But caterpillars can't fly so crash he does to the ground. Then he dreams he has a butterfly's wings, but a caterpillar's body.He tries to fly again and again, he crashes. Then he dreams has a butterfly's wings and body, but when a bird tries to catch him, rather than fly, he runs like a caterpillar and gets snagged in some thorns.

Thinking like a caterpillar does not work for butterflies, he realizes.Faith explains that the dreams were preparing him for a very big change.Instinctively, Anew starts spinning his cocoon.A few weeks later, he emerges as a butterfly; but not just any butterfly. The new Anew has prepared himself for this, the biggest change of his life. The strange new experiences of flying and seeing the world from the sky are fun, not frightening. While he enjoyed being a caterpillar, he enjoys being a butterfly more.

The fear:
A simple parable, "Wings of Change" incorporates a number of the principles Hill developed for overcoming fear of change.
First, he found, everyone is apprehensive to some degree about change. After all, not all change is good, Hill said.Consider the changes brought about by an earthquake or a heart attack.
As a result, people tend to respond to the good change in three general ways. Some pick up the latest trend and throw themselves into it with blind enthusiasm. The problem with that is they often have no vision for the changes they are making.Like Anew, they fly because they think they should, not because they are prepared for it.

Next, people often want to change, but can't get rid of their old behaviors. They may have butterfly wings, but they still have a caterpillar's body.

Finally, a lot of us end up with all the latest technical and intellectual developments in our fields at our fingertips, but we still think it terms of the status quo.We can't integrate our style with the new circumstances. We have a butterfly's body, but we still think like a caterpillar.
What to do?
Hill found the first step in adapting to change is to recognize how the change will make things better. If you are dealing with someone else's fear of change, you do that by involving the person in the process and showing how the change will be relevant to their goals and activities. Then you demonstrate how they can use elements of the change to accomplish more of what they want to do, Hill said.

Sounds fairly simple. But you're dealing with fear, which is both complicated and irrational. So a fair amount of patience is a good idea.

Dealing with children's fear of change is actually easier, Hill said.Childhood is a continuum of change and kids often sense when a change in their lives in imminent. When it is imminent, encourage the kid to view changes as growth and improvement, Hill said. And, help the child make the change within a safe environment so he or she can exercise control of it.
"Fear of change is often the fear of loss of control, and for good reason," Hill said.

Find your focus:
It is a legitimate fear because change is often thrust upon us, whether we are prepared or not, he said. When that happens, the key is to concentrate on your personal intentions; what will make your world better, even when the world beyond it is in a state of confusion and flux?Often you can adapt elements of the change swirling around you and make them work for you, Hill said.

"Wings of Change" is Hill's first book.He has three more in mind, all of them children's books. He recently finished "Wings Within" about a spiritually self-actualized snail, and is working on books three and four.He won't reveal their plots, other than to say they involve bees and butterflies.
"I write children's books because if I can make things clear enough for children to understand, I just might understand them myself," Hill said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sing the Story!
If you know the words to eensy weensy spider (or itsy bitsy Spider depending where you were raised)- you can sing this whole book. My two year loves it! Doesn't matter if Dad, Mom, or one his 5 big brothers sings it to him- he just wants to listen to you sing it! He is starting to hum along. I can hardly wait till he is old enough to sing along too! Great books like this one allow a child to interact along with the story. The writing to cute and fun. The pictures adorable. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars ADORABLE
This delightfully illustrated book contains a series of independent verses about the adventures of little pink spider with a blue hat, as she marches in a parade, hugs a baby bug, swims with a frog, buys new shoes, and such. The spider is SO DARN CUTE, it should cure any bug phobic. (If only spiders were so cute in real life). This book is a tad long, perhaps a bit too long for the youngest child. Each two-page spread contains a full verse. The first spread contains the traditional eensy-weensy spider verse; each subsequent spread contains a variation of the traditional verse. My favorite --
The eensy weensy spider fell down and scraped her knees.
"Ouch!" cried the spider. "I need some Band-Aids, please!"
"How many?" asked her mama. "I only have a few."
Said the eensy-weensy spider, "Six of them will do."
Overall, the book is delightful, a little longer & more complex than the typical board book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book for the whole family
This is one of the few books that I can get my 14 month old to sit through, he loves the illustrations and the rhymning text holds his attention. It is a favorite for both of his parents, as well. We highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Your Library
My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves the Itsy-Bitsy Spider song, so when I first saw this book at our local library I thought it would be a good book to read to her. I never thought that she would want it read over and over and remember the "new" verse's of the song only after reading it 2 times!! When I tried to return the book she cried and cried until I told her that we would get one of her own. When I started to look around at stores I discovered that this was a very difficult book to find due to its popularity. I was so thankful that I could find it on Amazon that I purchased 4 copies of it! I have already given them as gifts and received the most wonderful thank you notes from the parents of the children. This book is wonderful for ages 1 and up and should be part of all kids libraries!!

5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book
My husband bought this book for our daughter when she was 2 months old. We have been reading it together from day one. While she is only 3 1/2 months old, she clearly enjoys when I read it to her, because she keeps her attention focused on the book until I am finished, she doesn't get fussy or bored like she does with other books. I think because the illustrations are so great and because you "sing" the words. We have bought this book and given it as gifts to our little friends. It's wonderful! ... Read more
