Amazon.com A day at the beach begins at 6 a.m., and kids who are reading along should immediately know that they're in for some fun as various industrial vehicles roll out to clean beach litter and prep the sand. Each big rig (from the Surf Rake to the Sanitizer to the Sifter) gets described in detail in a band that runs across the bottom of the spread, setting up a format that continues throughout the book. The action plays out with engaging text on the top part of the page ("10-95! Form a search party! Calm the frantic parent!") as detailed drawings and fun facts roll out underneath. Kids will have a hard time dividing their attention between the action-packed scenes on top (featuring every beach scene and activity imaginable) and the illustrated beach trivia down below (ranging from wildlife and equipment to lingo and ancient lifeguard lore). With over 65 years of beach-patrolling between them, John O'Brien and Max Bilkins convey the obvious love that they have for both the beach and their vocation. Kids and grownups will likely learn a few things, and the dense format and heavily populated illustrations should encourage many repeat reads. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

Book Description To many customers though, speed matters more than skill. Her father's most important client threatens to pull his business unless his latest order of books is rebound in three days. Anna's father works long hours struggling to complete the order, but all seems lost when Anna's pregnant mother goes into labor the night before the order is due. Determined not to let her father fail, Anna decides to take the fate of the family business into her own hands. Reviews (1)
First of all, I'd just like to say what a relief it is to have a heroine in a picture book wearing glasses. Usually if a girl is in a book and there are glasses on her head, the ENTIRE storyline concentrates on her acceptance of the glasses or she is a computer/science/math genius. In this story, no mention is made of them, so well done there. The plot and setting of the story, however, are a bit unclear. It appears that this tale takes place somewhere in Europe, possibly before World War Two. Anna and her family could well be Jewish, but if so the author's not telling. The plot is intricately tied to the classic Aesop tale of the Tortoise and the Hare, with the motto "Slow and steady wins the race" (Anna's mantra). Just to be facetious, I'll point out that though the book rails against binding books with glue, "glue will get hard and the books' spines will crack", this book itself is glue bound. But all in all, it's a fine story. Not particularly thrilling or different, but nice. If you've a kid into book binding, I couldn't think of a better choice (mixed praise, I know). ... Read more

Book Description Reviews (2)
Each chapter of the book is about a different woman who speaks about what her job title is, what that means, and what a day for her might entail. It also talks about what the woman liked to do as a child, the people who encouraged her, what her interests were then and now, and how she got to this point in her career and life. So, you're not just reading about a job, you're reading about a person, and what it's like to be an adult who works in this field. I think it's a good book, because reading it ought to dispell the idea that many young girls seem to have that even if they like their computer at home, they wouldn't want a computing job, because they'd be stuck behind the computer all day and never interacting with anyone else. It's an easy read, and I don't think it talks down to the audience. I enjoyed reading it myself.
