3-0 out of 5 stars color really stands out
the baby and the 6 year old really like this book. It's not because of the story--I think it's a boring, very simple story with few words. The reason that they like this book is because of the very vivid, bright color drawings. I must admit that I myself really like the color as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why aren't there more great car books for little guys?
This is an EXCELLENT first car book for the little ones. It uses simple first words and simple colorful pictures. One page even has a brief list of parts! Highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 16 month old brother reads it!
With most of the words being car and bus, my little brother smiles as he reads the words from, "My Car". His face lights up everytime we read, "I am Sam"!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old loves it!
My two year old son loves anything by Byron Barton. The colors are bold and attract his attention and the text seems just the right length for his growing attention span. We have quite a few in the series and are collecting them all! You can not go wrong with this or any of the Byron Barton books!

(...) I read this to my pets and they loved it. I think it was good because people were working with animals to help them, not to get alot of money. It should be great for people like you!! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an excellent book for anyone who dreams of being a veterinarian, like me. The book talks about all types of different veterinarians, such as holistic, large animal, small animal, and more. This is a great book and a must read for anyone interested in going into the veterinary field.

4-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
considering that i want to be a vet, i guess you could say that any book i read is "outstanding", but i really give this book nothing but loud cheers for the way it makes you almost "weak" i love animals so much and i always watch "Emergency Vets" on Animal Planet and i even volunteer at an animal hospital in La Jolla, Ca. i love being around animals, and my dream is to be a vet. i want to thank you for this outstanding book, i loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lonesome Pine
I read the book, The Lonesome Pine by Jane West. This book is about a Christmas tree that turns into a beautiful book. I enjoyed this book because the pictures were incredible, and the author put great descriptions, used her imagination and put lots of thought into this book.
The illustrater, Monique Luijan-Bakerink made extroardinary pictures done in patel and paints. She made light fluffy colors. The illustrater definetly read the book before drawing the pictures because they looked exactly loke the descriptions the author put in the story.
I think that the author put great thought into this book before writing it. Some of the topics in this book are hard to understand and probobly took this author many hours to think it up.
The author showed great talent by showing incredible imagination. This book has many imaginatinary topics.
Jane West is a great author and I would like to thank her some day.
So, if youn want to read a great book by an excellent author, read the Lonesome Pine.

5-0 out of 5 stars White Socks Only
I read this story to my students and were saddened by the events that took place but learned a valuable lesson! We are all equal no matter which color or race we are! A good book for children to learn that racism through the eyes of a little girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent children's book on prejudice
"White Socks Only" takes place in segregated Mississippi and does an excellent job of helping young children realize how foolish it is to judge others by the color of their skin. On a hot Mississippi day, a young African-American girl walks into town and stops at a drinking fountain to get a drink. She sees a "Whites Only" sign on the drinking fountain and misinterprets the meaning of the sign. She innocently thinks the sign must mean "White Socks Only", so she takes off her black, Sunday best shoes and steps up to the fountain wearing her clean white socks. Suddenly, an angry white man pushes her to the ground. Soon other African-Americans gather around the fountain. To show their support and understanding of the child's innocent mistake, one by one they also take off their shoes and step up to get a drink with red, yellow, or blue socks. She is rescued by the "Chicken Man," who has very unusual powers.

This book deals with the issue of racism in a way that young children can relate to and understand because it makes the idea of judging people by the color of their skin almost as foolish as judging people by the color of their socks. I read this book to my fifth grade class and it generated some wonderful discussions about racism, and treating others with respect and kindness regardless of who they are, where they live, the color of their skin, or what clothes they wear. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important book for young children
I read this book to my children and they loved it. Even at their ages - 7 and 8 - they clearly understood the irony of the title. This story gives children a front-row view of how ugly prejudice is, but does so in a gentle enough manner that it is appropriate for young ones. ... Read more

I dump it in
I smash it down
I drive around the trashy town

Meet Mr. Gilly. He cleans up Trashy Town. He does it with a big smile and a big truck--which is sure to make him a hero with all the children in the neighborhood. David Clemesha and Andrea Zimmerman have created a rhythmic, repeatable refrain that will roll off the lips of every child. Dan Yaccarino's dynamic art puts the zip in Mr. Gilly's stride and adds style and charm to trash collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love to clean up Trashy Town!
Okay....this book is for toddlers, but I have been reading it to my 4-month old infant for weeks now. He LOVES it. I think it is the simple illustrations and the sing-song quality that really catch his attention. I often say "Dump it in, smash it down, drive around the Trashy Town!" even when we aren't reading the book and he smiles every time. I will look for more books by this author and illustrator, and I would recommend Mr. Gilly and Trashy Town to children (and even infants) of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars An instant favorite
About the best thing to be said about any children's book is that your children ask for it to be read over and over again.

From the moment I brought "Trashy Town" home, my three year old son could not get enough of it. The repetitive, but clever text by Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha begs for the kids to interact with trash collector Mr. Gilly as he cheerfully makes his appointed rounds about the trashy town. And for parents, this book lets you run with the sing-song quality of the text and make this a fun read.

But the story would be only a story without the minimalist illustrations of Dan Yaccarino (of TV's "Oswald" the Octopus fame on Nick Jr.) Yaccarino captures the dirty work with his signature painting style, giving "Trashy Town" a bold graphic look that youngsters love.

An absolutely perfect book for the under five crowd.

5-0 out of 5 stars pick it up, smash it down
From the catchy refrain to the charming artwork by Dan Yaccarino, this book is a delight. Mr. Gilly goes through town picking up trash everywhere, and at the end of the story, he's the last thing that needs cleaning. My 2 1/2 year old loved this book immediately, requesting rereads 20 times. That is a great sales pitch and one worthy of noting. This book will catch your young one's attention immediately--it's that good.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Your Little Truck Enthusiast!
What a wonderful find! I first borrowed this book from our local library, and ended up purchasing it. My son fell in love with it immediately. I read it to him the first few times, and then he began joining in the fun. His favorite thing to do was yell "stop!", "no!" and "yes!" while pointing to the appropriate words. So, not only are the colorful illustrations entertaining and bright, but the book can also help your child start to recognize simple words! I would highly recommned this book to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining
I can't say enough good things about this book. I got this book for my son when he was about fourteen months old (he's now 2 1/2) He has loved it from the begining. First because it was about garbage trucks and then because of its entertaining repetitiveness. Soon we would hear him shout "Stop! Mr. Gilly emptied all the cans from behind the doctors office". Now he can practically read this book to us by looking at the pictures. Great fun for the whole family! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a fine fairy tale in the tradition of the Brothers Grimm
Having read and enjoyed Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy, I decided to read this tale. It is definitely a fairy story in the tradition of the Brothers Grimm -- not for very young readers, but very entertaining for kids over 10, I'd say. Three interconnected stories revolve around the deeds of the mysterious and ingenious Dr. Kalmenius and his dealings with princes, apprentices and clockwork mechanisms. Though it is 109 pages long, the type is big and there are over 20 full-page illustrations, so this would be a good book for a child who shows an interest in the genre and seems ready to move on to a lengthier and more complex format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Philip Pullman does it again
Great book. Very creepy, with some great suspense. The illustrations are beautiful and very appropriate. Some readers have pointed out that the characters are underdeveloped--yes, they are, but that's not at all a fault, as this is a story in the style of folktales, where the characters aren't meant to be fully developed. They don't have to be. All of you who were enchanted by Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy will want to check this out. It's an entertaining quick read, and it will satisfy your hunger for more Philip Pullman books.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks!
This book ROCKS!!!!! It has adventure, mystery, and horror!! It may not be suitable for all ages (some "violent" events, and very descriptive scenes that aren't always "happy") and in my opinion, children nine years and older should read it because It is one good book!!! Here is a sample from the book that got me hooked.

"No! No! Stop-wait-the tune-let me whistle the tune-"
But his lips were too dry. Frantic, he licked them with a dry tongue. No use! He couldn't product a sound. Near and nearer the little knight came.....

Does the little knight use his sword to hurt the man, or does the man get away? Why does he need to whistle, and why does that seem to save his life.

You HAVE to read this book!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Even I was impressed!
I suppose I should have checked the details a little better, because I was thinking this was a 300 page novel for YA readers. In fact, it's quite a small novel, and it's for very young children. Nonetheless, I had a fun time reading it! It was dark and spooky, and the illustrations were brilliant and fit this story perfectly. I would probably read this on a rainy day to my niece and nephew, and have a good fun scare! I would reccommend reading this book, as well as Neil Gaiman's "Coraline"; these two novels are creepy for kiddies and overall fun for children and adults alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Short, but still Good.
"Clockwork" by Phillip Pullman is definitely one of the shortest books I've read in a long time. A determined reader could finish the book in an hour. However, such small size does not make this a bad book. Indeed, the plot is thick, intricate, but not confusing. The story is chillingly entertaining for readers of all ages. The art is creative and an excellent accompaniment to the book. In the end, I'd recommend this to almost everyone who asks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones is a Beauty Shop Guy
My kids and I love Junie B. Jones...we have every book! By far, Junie's misadventures as a beautician are the funniest yet! She practices cutting hair on everything and when she's left with sprigs herself...well we just about rolled on the floor in laughter! What's not funny about sprigs? Just saying the word makes us giggle! If you have a child between the ages of 5 and 9, boy or girl, Junie B.'s adventures are pure hilarity!

5-0 out of 5 stars a great read for young children
I want to tell you about a series of books that I love. They are called Junie.B Jones books. The first thing I want to tell you is they are so funny. One of my favorite books in the series is Junie.B.Jones is a Barber Shop Guy. It's about her dad who has to go get a hair cut, and Junie wants to tag along. When they get there is when the trouble begins. She sees the barber cut her dad's hair and starts to ask the barber lady all sorts of questions. Later on that day she decides to work on her baby doll's hair, her fuzzy bunny slippers, her dog , and last her own hair. After her mom and dad find out, she has to go back to the barber shop, and has to get a really short haircut. Now as Junie says that is the end of my famous story.

1-0 out of 5 stars No punishment, no taken away privileges, she has it TOO easy
I like Park's Junie B. Jones Series, but this one I may skip. Dispite Junie B.'s outragious language (which I find cute since some 5-year-olds or older catch themselves with a wrong grammer mistake!) this story sets a bad influance. If I cut my slipper's "hair", my dog's fur, washed my teddy-bear and gave myself a trim, I'd be is HUGE trouble. What Junie B. got was a trip to the salon and wasn't even grounded or something like that. Junie B. is rather spoiled and gets away with many things...but this is a bit overboard. And where are the parents? Junie B.'s Mom or Dad I think may have noticed something with little Junie after going to the beauty shop. I doubt this could really happen.
There is a new Junie B., First Grader coming out soon called "Shipwrecked", and I'm anxious to see how Junie B. is "STAR". If I was the author, I'd make Junie B. maybe get sick, but it DID say she fended off a stomach virus. Oh, well. Junie B. cut her hair and wasn't punished, but I can't do anything about it but skip the story. The other books are MUCH better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B Jones Is a Beauty Shop Guy
Junie B wants to cut hair, so she cuts her bunny slippers and her dog's hair! Then, she tries to cut her hair! Will it look awful? Read it to find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a funny book!
My 2nd grade daughter and I both loved this book. While it is true that Barbara Park doesn't always use correct English, she writes how many kids talk before they learn the right words. The books are written from a kindergartener's point of view. They wouldn't be believeable to kids if Junie B. talked like an English major. My daughter didn't want to read before we found Junie B. and now she can't get enought of these books. She begs to read to me all the time now! She laughs at Junie B's use of words and she knows what the correct ones really are. This isn't a grammer book, but it is a book that makes kids want to read and that gets my vote! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What if your mom IS a witch?
This book caught my eye because as a mother of Wiccan faith, I wanted a book to help my toddler understand what witchcraft is and is NOT, and to give him the right perspective and sense of humor about it. I am also a working mom. I think any book that helps kids deal compassionately with the confused feelings or questions they have about their working mom is great. I think other witches/pagan parents will appreciate this fun book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Working Moms Beware
After a hard day at work, fixing dinner for my family, getting everyone bathed, and doing homework I found it par for the course to sit down to a book about a working mom who is a witch. She is not even very successful as a working mom witch!!! When will society start being kind to the working mother? I found this a distressing comentary on how society sees women in the workplace. I do not think it is appropriate for children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Appalling commentary on working mothers
This book is soooo bad I burst out laughing. I am married to a working mom, and even I could tell that it is insulting to working moms everywhere! Working moms have enough guilt without this book to pile salt in the wound. Portraying the working mom as a witch sets the book off to a bad start. And to imply that she is rarely around, always late for kids' events, and ferocious after a bad day (as if stay-at-home moms don't get mad!) is no help. Would the author have written this about a working dad? I doubt it. This book sets us back decades in our fight for social justice.

4-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, a book for small children of working moms!
Although this book is recommended for children ages 4-8, I read it to my one-year-old. He loves the pictures and I hope it will help him understand working moms. My only problem with the book is that "My Working Mom" bakes terrific cakes and this working mom doesn't have time to bake terrific cakes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff, especially for the working mother in your life
This is a great gift for any working mother in your life that still has a sense of humor. If they are overwhelmed by career anxiety and working mother's guilt, however, stay away. Otherwise, it's a hoot, especially when it's a gift from the hapless, working father. ... Read more

Book Description

Greg Kenton has always had a natural talent for making money -- despite the annoying rivalry of his neighbor Maura Shaw. Then, just before sixth grade, Greg makes a discovery: Almost every kid at school has an extra quarter or two to spend almost every day.

Multiply a few quarters by a few hundred kids, and for Greg, school suddenly looks like a giant piggy bank. All he needs is the right hammer to crack it open. Candy and gum? Little toys? Sure, kids would love to buy stuff like that at school. But would teachers and the principal permit it? Not likely.

But how about comic books? Comic books might work. Especially the chunky little ones that Greg writes and illustrates himself. Because everybody knows that school always encourages reading and writing and creativity and individual initiative, right?

In this funny and timely novel, Andrew Clements again holds up a mirror to real life, and invites young readers to think about money, school, friendship, and what it means to be a success.

Policeman Small is on the job! This hard-working cop is up at the cracko' dawn to direct traffic and spread cheer with his friendly smile. In one busyday he guides schoolchildren across the street, reprimands a speeding sports cardriver, clears the street for an ambulance and a fire truck, writes tickets fordrivers involved in an accident, and leads a parade. Even so, this conscientiousofficer is never too busy to overlook a wayward puppy or hungry kitty. Duringher lifetime, Newbery Medal recipient Lois Lenski wrote and illustrated morethan 90 books for children. Her classic Mr. Small books were well loved bygenerations of children, and are now making their way back into print in fullcolor for a happy new batch of readers. For more adventures with the gentle Mr.Small, read The LittleAuto. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All that and a song
Pure, as simple and direct as you'd expect from Lois Lenski with an added benefit, the Policeman Small song to sing along.

4-0 out of 5 stars an animated look at a busy policeman
Lois Lenski's _Policeman Small_ illuminates the busy day of a traffic cop of the early twentieth century. Policeman Small directs traffic himself! He carries a sign to work which says STOP on one side, and GO on the other! Certain details of his work date the book as a whole, but my toddler son still loves _Policeman Small_.

Small visits the scene of an accident, and sorts things out. Small stops traffic so kittens don't get hit by cars. Small stops a young speeding driver, and cautions him to obey the speed limit.

All the various duties of Policeman Small can keep a curious young reader mesmerized. We are invited to watch Policeman Small as he performs all the various duties of the traffic cop; when he retires at the day's end, he is tired. Exhausted parents can sympathize. This is a good book to finish a bedtime storytime.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrrific book for a one-year old!
Too many rhyming children's books make no sense, but this one combines a simple start and finish plus an identifiable plot (story). I know this book is great because it holds the attention of our one-year old son better than any other book. I believe this is due to the simple rhymes and animation required by the adult to read the book outloud properly. The bottom line...our one-year old child loves this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fireman Small
Loved this book from the first time we read it with my boys...and that was 5 years ago. We all know all the words and love the simple story with its full range of emotions.
This one's a keeper, and I know my kids will one day enjoy reading it to theirs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite of Toddlers
Kids three and up LOVE the Fireman Small books. They are lively, fun and witty, and the illustrations are adorable. A great gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Sweet
This book is precious ~~ it contains rescue action and firetrucks but also kind tenderness. The illustrations are beautiful, soothing, and unique. The text is repetitive in a rhythmic but not annoying way. I am logging on to buy ever other book weitten by wong Herbet Yee right now!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hello Politically Correct Careers
This book was a gift to my 3 year old for Easter 2004. She loves the pictures of Hello Kitty as a ballerina and an artist. The book reinforces the alphabet (she already knows them) and introduces careers that are not readily thought of (i.e. scientist, explorer, juggler, pastry chef, yoga master). If you have a child who loves Hello Kitty, buy this book. It's well worth the money! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for every school library
This charming little story is a wonderful way to teach young children that police officers can be kind and helpful. The only reason I didn't give this book a five-star rating, is that none of the officers pictured are women!Too bad, because little girls can grow up to be police officers, too.Nevertheless, this is a wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple tale of how Police help our children.
Young children need direction that enhances community service. This book provides us with a vision of how the occupation of a police officer is more than just protecting the public from criminals. The book provides a simplestory that let's us know more about our community servants, the PoliceOfficers.

The graphics are presented in such a way that it seems like achild may have had a hand in the design.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nightly reader for my 3-1/2 read-old son.
This book is a refreshing reminder that police really do more than arrest bad guys. This story of three different officers helping a boy reinforced the positive image that police are here to help, serve and protect.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ FOR YOUNG BOYS AND GIRLS
TEACHES KIDS THAT POLICEMEN DO THINGS IN THE COMMUNITY OTHER THAN "ARREST PEOPLE AND PUT THEM IN JAIL". THEY LEARN THAT A POLICEMAN CAN BE A HELP ON A DAILY BASIS AND SHOULD BE LOOKED UPON AS ACOMMUNITY SERVICE.A SIX OR SEVEN YEAR OLD COULD READ IT HIMSELF AFTERHAVING IT READ TO HIM. ... Read more

Book Description

A sprightly text and colorful illustrations follow two creative people-and a talkative dog and cat-through the writing process step by step, from the inspiration for a story to the satisfaction of sharing the book with readers. Eileen Christelow based this instructive picture book on questions children asked during her classroom talks around the country. Simple enough for young children to understand, and with the entertainment value of fiction, "What Do Authors Do?" is children's nonfiction at its best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What Do Authors Do?
This is an excellent book for teaching children how books are created by an author and then published. It is a humorous account of the ways authors find their ideas and the rewriting necessary to create their stories. I plan to use it as an inspiration for my third graders as they write their own stories. ... Read more
