5-0 out of 5 stars My son's all-time favorate fire fighting book -- mine too!
My son judges a bookstore or library by number and quality of fire engine books. This book is our favorite. There is information in this book that is not in any other book we've read (and we have read many) and still it is an easy read. Gail Gibbons does a great job packing information into 4-8 year old bite sized pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fire! Fire! Awesome! Awesome!
I purchased this book for my 3 year old son with the intent to acquaint him with exactly what firefighters and their apparatus do.

I recently joined our local volunteer fire department and my son has been afraid of the sirens of our nearby station for a while now. This book was a big hit with him and me!

This book organization of this book gives it 4 sections for paid (city), volunteer (country), forest and harbor departments. My son loves the illustrations and sits and listens intently to the descriptions. Each page contains illustrations displaying smoke detectors, hoses, personnel, and fire equipment that are all well labeled.

This is a must buy if you need a firefighters book for your child!

5-0 out of 5 stars All kinds of fire fighters!
My 5.5 yr old son LOVES this book! He renewed it for four weeks at the school library before they made him turn it in, and then cried about it. The book teaches kids about different kinds of fire fighters. Most of us think of a fire fighters down at the fire station but it also encompasses smoke jumpers, water front fire fighters and more. I found it interesting to read to him too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - worth adding to your library
This is a beautiful book that you and your child will enjoy reading over and over.It rounds out a classic children's home library in teaching about art and how each person sees art in different places and is able to share it with others.A great book to talk about during family dinners!

5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrating the artistic experiences we all have every day.
This book beautifully and simply expresses the philosophy of the Lincoln Center Institute for Arts in Education, where I received training (I'm an elementary teacher).Basically, it is that art is about WAYS OF LOOKING, noticing, and interacting fully with our environment........appreciating the different, the beautiful, and the meaningful, for each of us as individuals. Cultivating this aesthetic awareness helps us live more fully, and connect to humanity. This book, appropriate for about age 4 and up, gently demonstrates this, and provides a valuable reminder for us grownups. On each page of 1-2 sentences, the narrator describes how her careful noticings of simple beauty makes her an artist.Truly, we all have it in us. Also, if this type of thinking excites you, try the work of Lincoln Center Institute's philosopher-in residence, Maxine Greene. Her new book, Reflections on the Blue Guitar:The Lincoln Center Lectures, can inspire your own reflections and connections. Enjoy!

"What happened this afternoon is too terrible to write...Please, God, let Will live. And please, God, forgive me."

Cassie's journal opens her dramatic story and that of her older brother Will, as they are both forced to reexamine their lives after a farm accident leaves Will without a leg -- and without hope.

After a winter of healing, Will knows his future must be away from the farm that he loves. He and Cassie go to stay with their older sister and her husband in the nearby town of Wiscasset. There, with the excitement of Maine's new statehood as a backdrop, Will finds that being disabled can be a social handicap as well as physical one. But with hard work he can win respect -- and find exciting possibilities for his future.

Living in town opens Cassie's eyes too. She sees Will considering career options not open to her, and she wonders if she can be fulfilled by keeping a house and a family. Are there other possibilities for a young woman in 1820? As Cassie watches Will make his life decisions, she struggles to find her own place in the world.

From the author of Stopping to Home and Seaward Born comes this remarkable story of hardship, determination, and the joy of finding the right path in life. ... Read more

In this informative companion to the popular "What Do Authors Do?" author/illustrator Christelow turns her attention to the visual side of creating a picture book. Employing her relaxed style and trademark humor, she shows how an illustrator develops a book from rough sketches to finished artwork, following two artists as they illustrate different versions of "Jack and the Beanstalk." Christelow answers the questions often posed by children, such as, "What materials do you use?" and "Is it hard to be an illustrator?" and reveals that the uniqueness of each book depends on many creative choices . . . and a lot of painstaking work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dunk
The greatest book I've ever read is Dunk! This book kept me guessing and reading. This book takes place where the fun begins and ends (right along the boardwalk). I'm so glad that my friend Zach recommended it to me!
Dunk is about a boy named Chad. He only has his mom because his dad left them for another girl. When Chad finally finds the perfect girl, she has to go back to Montana. The last words he heard from her were "I'll be back next year, Chad".
The next year finally came. Chad checked the game that Gwen ran when they met. Even though Chad wanted Gwen the most he also wanted a job for the summer. But,his mom didn't him to work because when his dad said he was working he really wasn't. On the day that Gwen arrived, his best friend Jason started acting weird so the cops took Jason to the hospital and Chad to the jail cell. They accused them of using illegal drugs. The person that saved him was his upstair neighbor. Even though Chad hated Malcolm, he was thankful that he was there.
The next time that he saw Gwen she was with his old friend Anthony. After that, he found out that his best friend Jason had a disease that affected his immune system. The next day he tried out for the bozo job.
Will Chad get Gwen back, get his job,and make friends with Malcolm? Also, will Jason get better? To find out, read the greatest book ever, Dunk!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the teenage boy
This book gives an amazing insight into the mind of a 15 year old boy. Perhaps not the most typical boy, but as the mother of a less-than-typical boy myself, I enjoyed it thoroughly. My seventh grade daughter also enjoyed it, and I think my son will enjoy it too, if he gets enough of a break from schoolwork to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dunk, An Awesome Book
I loved the book Dunk by David Lubar. It was an exciting story about a boy named Chad and what he did over his summer. It tells about how he wanted to be a Bozo at a dunk tank. When he asked about a job at the tank the owner said yes and Chad was happy. When he got there he found out that he wasn't getting to work as a Bozo but as a ball boy. This wasn't the end of his problems. His friend got very sick and the girl he liked started going out with someone else. But that isn't all. Read this book and see what happens to Chad and his friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars favorit of fireman books
This book is great for reading to Toddlers, and self reading elementary school students up to at least 9 years old. Longer than you think it would be, it gives you an example of the daily routine of a fireman. Lots of fun and educational too. The fireman is full of personality due to great writing and wonderful detailed illustrations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, exciting, educatinal read
I agree with the other reviews. My 2 year old will be getting many years enjoyment out of this book. I especially like it because it keeps his rapt interest for much longer than most 'pre-school' aged books, but is simple enough for a toddler. But my absolute favorite part, is the fact that Our Hero, Fireman Frank, has lunch and a nap as part of the book. With an active toddler, you need all the reinforcement you can get for those sticky areas!! :-) Great role model!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best
I am an art teacher and the father of a four year old little boy who has fallen in love with this book. Not just because it is about big fire trucks, but because it is a wonderfully illustrated synopsis of an admirable man doing his job well along with a team of firefighters that represent other cultures and genders without making it seem forced (unlike public education). This is one of the finest children's books we have purchased and it is because of the wonderful detail of the illustrations and how they compliment the writing. This book could stand on it's own without the writing (Good Dog Carl) just because of the illustrations, but it is wonderful to see art and text compliment each other so well n children's books. Buy this book now if your boy (or girl) loves trucks, pictures, and a story that weaves the two together in a magical way. You'll see!

2-0 out of 5 stars It passes the time
_Ripped at the Seams_, the latest in this teen romantic comedy series from Simon Pulse, is about 18-year-old Sami Granger who moves to New York with high hopes of becoming a top fashion designer. After a few shaky experiences, she finds a good apartment and a seemingly great new job. When a designer steals her ideas, she starts work at a lingerie store and discovers she has a talent for designing sexy, but not-too-revealing nighties. Throw an ultra-conservative father, a pregnant best friend, and a sexy across-the-hall neighbor into the mix, and you have what should be a promising romantic comedy.

Sadly, the book falls decidedly short of expectations. Everything about the book, from the characters' dialogue to their personalities to the situations, seems false. Seriously, could you imagine a tough guy from the Bronx *squealing* over two scoops of chocolate sorbet? Also, how could an 18-year-old with no proper training expect to just show up in New York and get a high-end job? The relationship Sami had with her father is not very well developed. Her aversion to her small-town life seems forced, almost as if it was put in there as an after-thought. Everything in the book is superficial. And, of course, it's all wrapped up in a nice little package, moral and all, in the last couple of pages.

If you need something to pass the time, this book is as good as any. Borrow it from a friend or buy it at a used bookstore, though. Don't waste too much money on it. It's very much not worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cute and charming teen romance.
Eighteen-year-old Sami Granger has left Elk Lake, Minnesota, the small town she has lived in her whole life, and moved to New York City to persue her dream of becoming a fashion designer. But life in New York isn't exactly what she expected, and the only job she can get is working as a receptionist for a designer. Still, she hopes it will be a back way in - until a guy she thought she could trust steals her designs and claims them for his own. Now the only job she can get is at a trashy lingerie store - but it turns out to be a golden opportunity. Before she knows it, Sami is in demand as a nightgown designer. But the city has changed Sami, and she's not sure she likes the person she is becoming. And who is the right guy for her - Franklin, a famous fashion photographer, or dependable Vin, whose has always been there for her when she needed a friend? I highly reccomend this cute book to readers who enjoy teen romances. ... Read more
