With rhyming text and warm, expressive paintings, this lovely picture book takes the reader through a year of beekeeping from the point of view of a little girl helping her beloved grandpa, who’s known in the town as the Beeman. Written in the style of The House That Jack Built, the book touches upon all aspects of beekeeping. From how the keeper and his young helper dress to how they care for the hive to how they harvest (and enjoy eating) the honey. Children will discover what each type of bee does, see how honey is made, and learn lots of amazing facts in this gentle yet highly informative story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning first book written by a talented FABULOUS author!
Krebs has written a delightful book that brings to life a glowing glimpse of "The Beeman." Seen through the eyes of a grandchild, this book invokes a warm town as gentle bee-keeping facts are given. Her book is an excellent addition to a family library or a classroom's apiary unit. I can't wait to see her other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A honey of a book
This warm, appealing picture book about bee-keeping (and grandparenting) is a delight from beginning to end. The text is spare and rhythmic, perfect for reading aloud, and the illustrations are full of bright colors and cheerfully inviting. Bees tend to fascinate young children, even if they frighten them; this book offers an insightful, reassuring look at the pleasures of bee-keeping for a little girl and her grandfather. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We love Big Joe!
I loved this book as a kid 25 years ago, and now I love reading it to my 20-month old son. My son loves Joe, too, and wants to read it over and over. Joe seems like such a friendly, hard-working fellow, and he's a wonderful example for kids. The illustrations are about the best I've ever seen in a children's book, so good, in fact, I sometimes pick it up even after my son goes to bed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Joe's Trailer Truck
We purchased this book for our son who is now 14, I saved all his baby books, and now we've got a new son, 19 months..both of them have enjoyed this book immensely! The cut-away view of the truck is wonderful, the illustrations so detailed and accurate..this book is one of the best out there for truck- loving toddlers...a must have, and a classic in our house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loffes Langtradare (the swedich title)
I have read this book at least 100 times to my son Bjorn. And I still enjoy reading it!!! I think that says somthing of the quality of the thing. Bjorn is now 4 years old and we started when he was about 2.5 years old. The book has very good illustrations, detailed enough to be interesting even after a hundred times! We usually start to look at the x-ray drawing of the truck, talking of where the radiator is and whats it for, why there is a fire extinguisher beside the drivers seat etc, etc...

I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is good for generations
When my brother was little, this was his favorite book. It is detailed, in pictures and discriptions, with plenty to fuel the imagination. I remember reading it to him, and he learned it so well that we could leave words out and he would fill them in as we read it.

I am a mother of a little boy of my own, now, and was thrilled to discover it was still in print! I am reading it to my own son, who already enjoys it and gets it out to look at himself.

If you have a toddler boy, be sure to keep a copy of this book in your home library! They will love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Factual and Fun
My father owns a trucking company and my mother used to read Big Joe's Trailer Truck to us all the time when we were little. My father has just recently rediscovered the wonder and magic of this remarkable book. It is simple, yet incredibly detailed. I salute Joe Mathieu for writting such a worthwhile piece. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An original picturebook story
Max Lucado's books for readers of all ages have made him one of the most popular writers of books for a Christian readership. Engagingly illustrated by David Wenzel, Lucado's A Hat For Ivan is an original picturebook story that wonderfully captures a very special truth -- everyone was made by God for a special purpose. This is the story of the hatmaker's son, who sees his father create the perfect hat for each person. But when Ivan is worried about his future, he tries on all sorts of hats - musician, baker, firefighter - and none of them seem to fit! The feel heavy and ridiculous, and make him feel tired. At the end of the day, his father offers him some choice words of wisdom; there will be a hat - and a life - meant just for him, based on what he most likes to do. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Pop-Up Book Ever - I'm Not Kidding!
Over the years, I've bought many pop-up books for my 5-year-old. This one is, without doubt, the most entertaining pop-up book I've seen. Many pop-up books suffer from pointless, non-interactive, or non-functioning pop-up animations. Not this one!

You get, in order,
1) A slide mechanism with a dog pulling covers off a firefighter,
2) Another slide mechanism with a firefighter sliding down a firepole,
3) A side view of a fire truck, with flaps showing the inside,
4) More flaps, showing the operation of a fire hydrant, and also acting as a simple animation for the firefighters,
5) Yet another flap, with a firefighter donning a breathing mask,
6) An extremely cool 2-page full pop-up, showing a house engulfed in flames, complete with a fire truck, firefighters climbing a ladder, and other firefighters shooting water in the front door,
7) A slide mechanism showing a firefighter cutting a hole in the floor with an axe,
8) A flap showing a fire being put out with a water hose, and
9) A fold-out pop-up showing the fire engine pulling out of the station for the next call.

As that run-down shows, you get a lot of interaction AND a lot of learning going on with this book. Very highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun learning and easy reading for children and parents!
I thought that, "The Pet Vet", was put together very well. The words are clear and concise for children. This makes it easier for parents to teach their children to read and understand. The pictures that accompany the reading material are adorable...the little girl on the cover is a cutie- patooty! Maybe you can use some of these children over again, so our children have regular characters to relate to throughout their learning journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming, Smart, & Current
I found this book to be very intelligently written and quite appropriate for today's children and families. The view through the eyes of a daughter helping her father with something traditionally so patriarchal and 'grown up'was refreshing. Ms Maslac is also very clever and charming in her word choices and phrases. I think all parents- single or coupled- would enjoy sharing this book with their child. It is pro female- pro family- pro education- non religious- non fantasy- non political. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Old-Fashioned" Experiences Still Have Appeal
I loved Lillian Hoban's books as a child. I identified with the character's typical childhood adventures. Whether planning a party, losing a tooth, or trying to earn money for something, the humor in these stories is what makes them so entertaining and the lesson in the end is learned painlessly. Ms. Hoban's distinctive drawings are attractive with lots of details that communicate & enhance the text (think of the Frances series) - perfect for readers new to the chapter book format.
But how would these books appeal to my own children, 20 years later? I oughtn't have worried. My 5 year old, who is reading a little ahead of her age, is engaged by these books. She finds Violet clever & identifies with her "little sister" issues. The topics are not beyond her. My 7 year old son also enjoys the books because they make him laugh. There is an "old-fashioned" flavor to the tales my children find sweet - taffy making, penny candy, reading the funnies or pulling a loose tooth with a string.
It is fair to note that Arthur is mean to his sister, Violet, at times. As a mother I find it a little off-putting. But it is very clear to readers that he is not being nice and is food for thought for many an older sibling (myself included). A fine reminder to older kids to be patient with little ones, because they often have something worthwhile to contribute. And, fortunately, Arthur always makes amends in the end.
As many of our children grow up in a time where they can't run around the neighborhood they way these characters do, or their parents did, it's nice to pay a visit to Arthur & Violet's little world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Daughter tired of it after first week
This was OK the first few times, but it doesn't hold up to repeated playings. My daughter and I don't like Arthur much, don't care much about him, and don't want any more of his stories. Maybe it would be better for kids with siblings close in age that fight who could relate to it better. ... Read more

I have used this book when doing a "Jobs in our Community" type unit with K and 1st graders. I like the many faces shown and the blurring of gender stereotyping in work. The text and illustrations are simple yet engaging.

This is the fourth book written by Anne Rockwell's about Mrs. Madoff's class. This multicultural career book has children introducing their parents' careers to the rest of the class. There is a wide variety of careers included not just the typical ones. There is an African-American mother who is a judge, a child's grandmother who is the school crossing guard, one dad is a paleontologist, a Hispanic dad is construction worker, an African-American mom is a nurse, and a mom who is a veterinarian. The characters cross different cultures and genders for the wide selection of careers chosen to be represented in this book. The illustrations are very colorful and each career is represented on two facing pages. The first page shows the child with their parent and a small picture portraying their profession. The next page shows that person working in their field of work. The text is written in a large font, which makes it easy to read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Truck Trouble no trouble for little ones!
I bought this book on a whim one year ago when my daughter was 3 years old. I wasn't sure if she would like a book about trucks. The first time I read it to her, she fell in love with it. She loves the pictures and story about the truck driver, his life in his truck (complete with bed), and his troubles on the road. I still have to read this book to her, now that she is four years old and into princess fairies. I highly recommend this book for all kids, even if you think they may not be truck lovers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A book well worth your time!
The Children's Homer is a great book for older elementary children if they like adventure and are interested in learning about Greek society. It is an excellent book about the great Greek hero Odysseus and his son, Telemachus. When Telemachus is a baby his father, Odysseus, is called to go to war. When Telemachus grows older, the goddess Athene tells him to go seek his father. Telemachus obeys and great adventure begins. I personally thought that the names were hard to keep up with, but the book holds much magic and adventure. I also would have never wanted to read the book on my own, but I'm glad I got the chance in school. The book kept me interested just about all the time, and I always looked forward to reading more. My favorite character was Odysseus, because he was brave and wise. He would listen to advice given to him and was polite and thankful. I think I will always remember the story because it shows many good character traits that everyone needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Adaptation of Classics for Children
Padraic Colum (1881-1972) saw the need to introduce the classics to young children. In 1918 he published this book The Children's Homer which combines the retelling of both Homer's Illiad and Odyssey. It is obvious that his idea and his book has stood the test of time since this book is now in reprint for our children to learn from today. The few illustrations are by Willy Pogany and are well done. This is an excellent way to introduce our children or the younger student to the classics.
Simon & Schuster's Aladdin Paperback published this edition and on the back cover they offer a web site of www.SimonSaysKids.com for all who are interested.

3-0 out of 5 stars Warning: archaic language
This is a very well-written book -- for its time. I find that the archaic language make it unsuited for reading to children. (It is filled with "thee", "thou," "raiment," etc.) I had to practically translate the conversations between the characters for my son. For example Achilles says: "Deem'st thou I grieve for ..."

I still read it to my son (with plenty of translation and paraphrasing), and he still thoroughly enjoys the Homeric epic. But I think a more contemporary rendering would have been much better.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a terrible Book
I hated. I like most books but this one was terrible. I had to read it for school. One person in my whole class liked it, most of the kids in my class did not even understand it . Never get this book for a kid. Teachers if you want to teach your kids to like to read get somthing else not this.
