The three-toed sloth of the Amazon rain forest is very, very slow. "Whyare you so slow?" the howler monkey asks. But the sloth doesn't answer. Hedoesn't respond when the caiman asks why he's so quiet, either--or when theanteater asks why he's so boring. He is only moved to speak when the jaguar askshim why he's so lazy. After thinking long and hard (as sloths tend to do), hebegins to elaborate on his many slothful qualities: unflappable, lethargic, butnot lazy. "That's just how I am. I like to do things slowly, slowly, slowly."This simple introduction to the joys of sloth (and sloths) may be the perfectbook for bedtime--parents and children alike will enjoy learning in zoologistJane Goodall's foreword that sloths sleep 15 to 19 hours a day! The beautifultapirs, tree frogs, and birds of the Amazon that adorn Eric Carle's cut-papercollage, color-drenched pages are identified at the close of this lush, oversized picture book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure
Slowly, Slowly, Slowly, Said the Sloth, written by Eric Carle, is a delightful children's picture book about the joys of learning to march to one's own drum. A sloth lives alone in the rain forest. The sloth does nothing but hang from the branches of his tree and sleep all day. During the course of the story various animals ask the sloth questions about his habits. "Why are you so slow?" "Why are you so lazy?" The sloth finally responds one day with the following rather simple but effective defense of his life style, "That's just how I am. I like to do things slowly, slowly, slowly." The illustrations are bright and colorful. Eric Carle's collage style is perfectly suited for creating the sloth's rain forest home and the many other animal denizens who populate its landscape. Slowly, Slowly, Slowly, Said the Sloth is an excellent book with a gentle and heart felt message for children.

Preston McClear,

5-0 out of 5 stars Set Your Own Pace.....
Slowly, slowly, slowly...that's the way of the sloth. Whether crawling along a branch, or eating a leaf, the sloth never hurries, but spends most of his life hanging upside down from a tree branch in the rain forest, and sleeping, rain or shine. "Why are you so slow?" the howler monkey asked one day." And why so quiet and boring, other animals want to know. The sloth didn't answer. He just hung, silently, and slept. But when the jaguar asks why he's so lazy, the sloth finally sees the need to set the record straight. He may be many things, among them lackadaisical, unflappable, sluggish, calm, and laid-back. "I am relaxed and tranquil, and I like to live in peace. But I am not lazy." Then the sloth yawned and said, "That's just how I am. I like to do things slowly, slowly, slowly." Beginning with an intriguing forward by Jane Goodall, detailing the life and habits of the sloth, Eric Carle's wonderfully creative picture book pays homage to an unlikely and endearing hero. His spare and slothlike, repetitive text is quiet, soothing and engaging. But, as always, it's Mr Carle's bold, bright, and imaginative cut-paper collage illustrations that make this book stand out and sparkle. Each two page spread dazzles with vibrant color and clever detail as the many animals who live in the rain forest march by, and youngsters can find all their pictures and names displayed on the endpapers for further reference. Perfect for preschoolers, "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly," Said The Sloth is a captivating masterpiece that entertains and enlightens with its gentle message. As the sloth would tell you...Slow down, set your own pace, and enjoy life!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Will Be a Classic
After all these years of presenting us with fabulous children's books, Eric Carle has outdone himself. "Slowly, Slowly," a beautifully written and illustrated tribute to the world's rain forests, will bring a tear to an adult's eye, and will appeal to children of ALL ages, despite its picture-book presentation.

Beginning with the thoughtful, simply written but heartfelt introduction by Jane Goodall, in which she explains the world of the sloth in terms anyone can understand, to the lovely wording of the book (the sloth does everything slowly, slowly...languid and lovely) to the trademark Carle collage illustrations, this book has something for everyone. And it educates in such a subtle way that even the most recalcitrant child will come away with a strong sense of who lives in the rain forests and why they must be preserved.

Every page features not only the sloth, but another animal as well, illustrated in the most enchanting of collage pictures. At the end of the book, each of these "extra" animals is listed by its special picture, and identified. And each is native to the rain forest.

What more can I say? I predict this will become Carle's legacy, outdoing all the rest of his work combined. I love it so much that I am ordering it for my college-age daughter, whose love of all things wild survived into her young adulthood. ... Read more

It's almost Christmas and it hasn't snowed yet. As the farmer naps onhis small farm, he dreams of being covered in a gentle blanket of new snow. Then, one by one, he dreams of each of his five animals (aptly named One, Two,Three, Four, and Five) being covered as well. When he awakens, he discovers thatreal snow--not dream snow--has fallen. And "Oh my! Oh my! I almost forgot," thefarmer shouts, and, bundling up, hurries out to his tree (named Tree) with a boxand a sack, looking remarkably familiar in his white beard and red suit. Afterdecorating Tree, the farmer shouts "Merry Christmas to all!" and pushes a buttonfor a surprise Yuletide jingle.

Young fans of Eric Carle's TheVery Quiet Cricket, TheVery Clumsy Click Beetle, and other multisensory books, will delight inpushing the same microchip button the farmer pushes to hear the tinkling, oddlyeerie holiday tune. In an even more unusual departure from standard picturebooks, Carle inserts a clear plastic sheet, covered with snowflakes and a whiteblanket, before each illustration of the dreaming farmer and his animals. Turnthe plastic page to discover what kind of critter lies beneath the snow. Carle'smagnificent collages, as always, are the heart and soul of his books. (Ages 3 to8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that great of a holiday book
I'm quite surprised after just receiving this book to find that the reviews of it are so great. I'm not sure why either. I'm guessing that it is because of the author's previously successful books. However, I found nothing interesting about Dream Snow, no imagination stirring events, nothing original, just sorta hum-drum.When he gets to the part about the snow covering the animals, there's five pages, count them, 5 that have one sentence which is as follows, numbered accordingly: "The snowflakes gently covered one with a white blanket, the snowflakes gently covered two with a white blanket," and on, and on it goes until it mentions all five animals. And the story proceeds from there and doesn't really go anywhere. The animals wake up to find the farmer running to decorate a tree. There's no imagination with this story at all. It doesn't even mention that the farmer is Santa, so you're left with this vague feeling of obscurity "what was that?"It just didn't make much sense to me, a writer, nor did it to my little one.

In addition, the song is really strange and quite frankly, my little one really didn't like the illustrations. I have the "Book Child" in my house - he has a zillion of them and loves books very much. He took one look at this and didn't even want me to read it. I'd go after another story to be quite honest. Something that stirs the excitement, joy and wonder of Christmas because this one certainly does none of that. It just doesn't go anywhere with the imagination, nor does it stir any excitement. If you are thinking about it, check it out of the library first and see if your little one enjoys it.There's just more to the Christmas season than obscurity.

4-0 out of 5 stars A genuine holiday classic
In a world filled with commercial holiday books based on popular kids' movies or cartoon characters, it's nice to have a simple story about kindness, hope and the magic of the season. I bought this book for my older son when he was 4. Now both my sons, 6 and 2 love to read it year-round.

As an elementary school Spanish teacher this book is a lifesaver. While I found some of the translations slightly unusual it is a great way to use childrens literature to teach many subjects in Spanish. 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Bi-Cultural Book
What A Wonderful Way To Expose Your Child To A Different Culture. This is a great book. I am happy to read both the English and the Japanese to my child. It has 2 different forms of art, 2 different languages, all connected together in the middle of a lovely childrens book. It is a wonderful way to expose your child not only to another culture, but great way to get a child interested in learning another language. For those who are looking for bi-lingual books (other then spanish) know that they are hard to find and I am glad such a wonderful and famous writter has made a great example to help bring about awareness and teach children.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Art Book but a little too sophisticated for kids..
We are huge fans of Eric Carle so I had my husband pick this up for our 2 year old at the local bookstore (based on the title). While it is a beautiful book/collaboration, it is not very "kid-friendly". There's really no storyline and half the book is written in Japanese. The first 5 pages or so consist of a different animal asking the dog "Where are you going?"...and the dog replied "To see my friend!"....I have to admit that I am disappointed with this one. I will treasure it more as an art book than a children's book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed this
If you love stories, you'll really enjoy this. My students did. Also nice to add to your collection are: Aesop for Children (Winter), Grimm's complete fairy tales (Grimm), Great Children's stories (Richardson), The Butterfly (Singh). There are many other great children's books out there, but these were the ones I enjoyed the most. Oh, and I almost forgot the two classics that no children should ever be deprived of: The Little Prince (Exupery) and Charlotte's Web (White).

1-0 out of 5 stars thought this was terrible, do not recommend
I bought this book to continue teaching little Japanese children (4-7) partly brought up in the states classic western children stories, but then realised that the stories had all been shortened- some to a point they were not understandable. I thought a lot of the messages the original writers were trying to portray were lost, and the children found the pictures scary. There were a lot of stories I had not heard of, and very few of the ones I would have called classics.

I just want to warn that the pictures are fairly dark and gloomy and that the stories have been adapted and shortened a lot in some cases. Most stories only have one picture of a single scene and are very heavy on words, whereas children tend to find it much easier to follow if there are more pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Art gives new slant to old tales
Although I prefer realistic illustrations the artisty of Eric Carle is fun to look at and the bold, splashy colors of his tissue-paper collages get the attention of children. The book contained a good mix of fairy tales from Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm, as well as some of Aesop's Fables. The book had some tales that I had never heard such as The Marsh King's Daughter and The Traveling Companion, and the rendition of The Wild Swans is one of the best I have read. My favorite illustration was of the horse in Tom Thumb. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my Favorite Eric Carle book
I normally love the Eric Carle books. My son usually loves them as well. This book is not my favorite, nor is it my son's favorite. I don't feel this is a good representation of his work.

The pictures are very cute and the idea is very imaginative.

However, the story itself is very clunky and is a bit much for a toddler to sit through. We just look at the pictures and don't try to really read the words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for the imagination!
Right after reading this book just once, my daughter was outside telling me all the different things the clouds looked like! This book really stimulates the imagination. The simple pictures and verse make it a great bed-time book for the little ones. It has quickly become one of my daughter's "must-have" going to bed books.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADORABLE book!
This is a cute and fun book. I don't usually choose Eric Carle books, but this is one of the best books I've read to my almost-2 year old this year. Even my 5 year old likes it. Fun, imaginative, and we really like the little face on Little Cloud in the beginning of the story. This small/medium board book size is a plus, too, easy for little hands.

2-0 out of 5 stars Truly terrifying
Before reading my comment, please bear in mind that I am a very uncensorious person who believes in giving children free range of reading matter; I was raised that way, raised my children that way, and want to see my grandchildren raised that way. However, I tried to imagine reading this beautifully illustrated (though syntactically very strange) book to any of my 2-8 year old grandchildren, and realized it would TERRIFY them. The spooky way it treats the separation of mothers and offspring, along with its implications that freedom is scary and potentially dangerous to warmblooded life, makes this a book I really don't want to have where my grandpeople can get hold of it while I'm babysitting them. They'd be screaming for their mother within minutes. This is the only book I've ever returned for a refund!

5-0 out of 5 stars A childlike way to be introduced to butterfly mitration.
I bought The Lamb and the Butterfly right away. The illustrations in collage are captivating as the lamb learns about the butterfly's migration. The words are wonderful too as the butterfly zigs and zags and ziggety zags. A child who loves this book would be ready for Malinda Martha meets Mariposa, about a girl who imagines herself directing the life-cycle of a Monarch on her backyard stage, with the common element being the wonder of migration since Mariposa flies from Boise to overwinter in California. It adds the possibility for children to act out the stages of the life-cycle, too. The Lamb and the Butterfly gets children off to a wonderful start. ... Read more

The Foolish Tortoise was a very good book, I love Eric Carle's work. The pictures were marvelous. I won't give away the ending but he leaves his shell to travel to places he could never go before, but he's still not as fast as a horse, so he gets kind of depressed. He also finds trouble and he can't hide in his shell, so he find shelter behind rocks and tree, etc. He gets cold and has no heat. He walks around looking for his shell, does he find it? Get the book to find out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Food Obsessed
The Greedy Python and The Very Hungry Caterpillar are my least favorite of the books Carle has illustrated. They are both food obsessed and give mixed messages about over-eating. A great Carle book is Have You Seen My Cat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute for all ages
I have 3 children, ages 5, 3 & 1. My two oldest think The Greedy Python is a funny book. The illustrations are awesome- as all of Eric Carle's work is. The story teaches a good lesson in selfishness and greediness. The greedy python is eating everything in sight and even after getting too full to hold anymore he sees one last thing to eat. He winds up gulping down his tail and eventually disappearing. It's a really good lesson for all children to learn. It's also easy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginning readers!
Beginning reader in our house really likes this book as he uses the illistrations to "cue" him into the words. There are many subject areas that can be explored as a result of the book, reading, math, science...For an older child who is slower learning to read, this is excellent as there are multisyllable words and a 'story line' that holds their interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning to a "sharing" curriculum for pre schoolers.
A good book to begin an entire curriculum of sharing for the preschooler. Adding the song "I'm being swallowed by a boa constrictor" and acting out the song brings this book to life. The rhyming and bright colors of an Eric Carle book always brings a smile to the class and the teacher. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sweet but dull
I bought this book for my 2 year old son because I liked the illustrations and we've enjoyed so many of Eric Carle's other books. However this one seems to miss the mark. It's very repetitive and we both find it a bit boring. There are other books with pictures of lots of animals (eg "Brown Bear Brown Bear" or "Dear Zoo") that engage Ben (and me) far more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations
We own nearly all of Eric Carle's books, and this one, though written with a sweet message (all mommies love their babies), comes across as a bit repetitive. My two year old is not captivated by the story (each page asks the same question that is answered on the next page, using different animals each time), but she loves to look at the pictures and the book has served as a great tool for teaching the names of animal babies - the last page of the book even includes the names, if you don't know them (ie, a baby horse is a foal, but what is a baby swan or kangaroo). I'd buy the book just for this information and the illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars we love this book!
Our daughter just turned 3 and she loves this book. We found a copy of this book at the library, brought it home and she loved it. This book encourages her to use her words. She even reads it to herself in her own little language. We are defenitely ordering this book today. It is also a great book for storytime (daycare setting). Other books that are winners in our home are "From Head to Toe", "Panda Bear, Panda Bear what do you see?","Polar Bear,Polar Bear what do you hear?", "Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see?", "Dream Snow", "The very busy spider". What we love about these books is the way the pictures are done, words, and all the animals in them. They are put together so well for children.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor grammar
Though I love the concept behind the book, there is a grammatical error on every page. The correct language should be "just like you and I" (have a mother). The way every page is written implies the "you and me" are mothers.
I show my son the pictures, and describe the story in my own words, but definitely do not read this one aloud.

4-0 out of 5 stars perfect for little one
This is my one year olds favorite boko. He may not be the target age but he loves the repetition and all of the animals. He likes to find each one other places in his room. It also inspired his first sign -- lion. ... Read more

This was story about a young boy who idolized his uncle, a plaster. The boy's aunt makes him an apron like his uncle and goes to work with him.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Apron: A story from my childhood
My Apron is the story of a small boy who idealizes his uncle who is a laborer, specifically a plasterer. The uncle's uniform is a long white apron with a large pocket on the front. The boy's aunt sews him an apron like his uncle's and the boy spends the day helping his uncle lay plaster. The boy feels proud of his accomplishments and forms a warm bond with his uncle through the experience of working together.

My 2 1/2 year old son loves this book. He walks around the house with it saying, "Mommy, this is 'My Apron,' I love this book!" That speaks volumes to his mommy! ... Read more

Book Description

Walter the Baker is famous for his breads, rolls, cookies, tarts, and pies. The Duke and Duchess especially love his warm sweet rolls, delivered fresh to their castle every morning. But one day the cat spills the milk, and Walter is forced to serve the Duke and Duchess rolls made with water. After one bite the Duke throws down his roll in disgust and summons Walter to the castle. He threatens to banish the baker unless he can take the same dough and make a good-tasting roll that the rising sun can shine through three times. Will Walter succeed in his task, or will he have to leave his town forever?

With good humor and the vibrantly colored paper collages that are known and loved the world over, Eric Carle has concocted a delicious book that kids will savor as much as they love eating...shhh...pretzels! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tale
This is the tale of Walter who is possibly the world's best baker. After an unfortunate accident, Walter finds himself on the wrong side of his Duke and is faced with possible banishment! Walter uses all his talents in the kitchen and with a bit of good fortune he is able to satisfy the Duke's challenge and create a new treat for the entire world to enjoy. We received this book as a gift before moving to Germany. My children were 1 and 5 at the time and both loved it. Even my restless one year old could sit though the whole story. Collage pictures (a Carle trademark) are more detailed in this book than in Carle's more elementary stories. Here we have background - a kingdom, people standing in line outside the bakery, a large group of horses and dogs in a scene. The pictures alone entertained my girls for hours as they choose their favorite horse, dog and pretzel in the pictures and made up their own stories of the other characters pictured. This is a great book for anyone who likes a make believe tale of how things could have been invented. It is a nice story about working hard to solve a problem even when it is seems "unfair". It is a great book for reading in Germany with bakeries on every corner and so many pretzels to choose from!

4-0 out of 5 stars Walter The Baker
Walter the Baker is good book. It's about a baker and his wife. They make the best food in the whole village.Everyone rushes in the morning to buy their goods.Even the prince.Till one day the cat accidently runs into the milk.So the prince gets very angry with his bread. So he has to come up with something before time runs out.Something the prince will be happy with.So he trys so hard to make something. It teaches your mistakes can turn out good. That change isn't always bad. This book is probaly for children between the ages of 6 and 8.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves it!
I now have to read Walter the Baker nearly every night, and he talks about the book frequently while we're on trips. There's a lot going on in the story, but not too much for a toddler to handle (he's 2-1/2). Definitely entertaining, and Eric Carle never seems to miss with the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars I rarely say it, however to me Walter Jr. seemed like one...
of the most fascinating tales I've read! Have you ever been in a disaster, so great you didn't know what to do? If so Walter Jr. had the same problem after upsetting the Duke and Ducthess of his home town. Walter, a baker, made delicious sweet rolls for the Duke and Ducthess of his home town. However one day Walter's cat tipped over a can of milk. Walter witnessed the incident and became desperate. "What shall I do?," he thought. He had no fresh milk and without that his rolls tasted awful! Thinking that the Duke and Ducthess wouldn't notice, Walter substituted the milk with water. As soon as the Duke and Ducthess tasted the inferior rolls they called Walter over. The Duke almost banished Walter but quickly thought about how much he'd miss the sweet rolls. He considered giving Walter the ultimate challenge, invent a roll which the rising sun can shine through three times, use one piece of dough, and it must taste good. What will Walter do and what will he make? Read this spectacular book to find out how and what Walter creates! ... Read more

Book Description

Generations of readers have grown up with Eric Carle's deceptively simple picture books, which combine entertaining stories, glorious cut-paper collages, and gentle lessons about a child's world. Here are three of his stories collected in one handsome volume: Rooster's Off to See the World, A House for Hermit Crab, and The Tiny Seed.

Dazzling collages of hand-painted tissue paper will entice young readers to become acquainted with numbers, the seasons, and the days of the week as they read. Rooster sets off to see the wide world in a day-long adventure. Hermit Crab spends a week in search of the perfect decorations for his shell. And a tiny seed travels through fall, winter, spring, and summer looking for a place to grow into a flower. These three stories involving counting and the passage of time will excite the imaginations of children and encourage their curiosity about the world around them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my speech delayed 4 year old LOVES this book
Beautiful illustrations with cutouts and flaps...you can see a peek at what is on other pages, blends into a different object, but when you turn the page...whala...it's something else! This is an older preschooler book, probably won't appeal or be appropriate for 1 or 2 year olds. ... Read more

Book Description

My father loved animals, it is from him that I inherited that love for all kinds of creatures. My father liked to draw, it is from him that I inherited the joy of picture making. My father was a story teller, it is from him that I learned to tell a story.

Eric Carle known for his outstanding picture books, among them The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has now turned his talent to writing these short stories.Flora and Tiger is an exuberant and touching collection of personal vignettes dedicated to his gentle father, from his earliest years in America, through his boyhood in the shadow of war in Germany, to the present as an adult living and working in the United States.

Eric Carle writes of his Oma (German grandmother) and the hen who might have been a rooster, his cousin Fritz and the turtle who loved a cat, his friend Sol and his kidnapped black cat, and his Uncle Adam and his tamed ravens, and many others.

"These stories have three things in common," Eric Carle writes, "animals and insects, my family and friends. and me."Writing with wit and charm, full of love for the people around him, in these stories, Eric Carle welcomes readers, young and old, into his world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making childhood connections with Eric Carle's autobiography
When I taught an autobiographies unit for my fifth grade writers, they were particularly drawn to this collection of autobiographical stories by Eric Carle. We are teaching our students how to make personal connections to readings, and there were many here...such as Carle's special walks with his father...his curiosity with nature...his incredible observation skills which led to his success as an artist and writer. The children loved this work and wanted to read all the stories. The voice, honesty, and beauty is lyrical and tangible. ... Read more
