Sam may be a man of few words, but he is certainly eloquent on thesubject of his car. With a bright, bold palette of mostly primary colors,author-illustrator Byron Barton (Trucks, Planes, Machines at Work, etc.) deftlydepicts the fondness Sam has for his chunky little car and the care with whichhe treats it. "I love my car. / I keep my car clean. / My car needs oil / and afull tank of gasoline." Sam also describes the parts of his car, how to drivecarefully, and where he likes to go in his car. The story concludes with atwist, sure to delight already rapt readers.

Sam and his acquaintances are unusual-looking, blocky figures, with big blackblobs for eyes, and more blobs for nose and mouth. Characters and objects arereminiscent of the cars, signs, and figures in a child's play station. Smalldetails are appealing: the mechanic is a woman, and the car's headlights bathe aportion of the text in yellow. This should be required reading for everydriver's ed student; we can only hope that the repeated readings this book isbound to receive will sink in to preschoolers' minds for future recall: "I obeythe laws. / I stop for pedestrians. / I read the signs." This is a lovelypicture book. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars color really stands out
the baby and the 6 year old really like this book. It's not because of the story--I think it's a boring, very simple story with few words. The reason that they like this book is because of the very vivid, bright color drawings. I must admit that I myself really like the color as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why aren't there more great car books for little guys?
This is an EXCELLENT first car book for the little ones. It uses simple first words and simple colorful pictures. One page even has a brief list of parts! Highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 16 month old brother reads it!
With most of the words being car and bus, my little brother smiles as he reads the words from, "My Car". His face lights up everytime we read, "I am Sam"!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old loves it!
My two year old son loves anything by Byron Barton. The colors are bold and attract his attention and the text seems just the right length for his growing attention span. We have quite a few in the series and are collecting them all! You can not go wrong with this or any of the Byron Barton books!

"Emergency! Emergency! Calling the Little Green Tow Truck to the main highway, intersection one.... A red convertible needs a tow."

With a little help from young readers, the spunky little tow truck is on the job. Turn the key, put on the turn signal, check the map, and away we go! Maneuvering through a traffic jam, the truck reaches the convertible and hooks it up with a towline, then cranks the handle to lift the front end. Now it's just a matter of slipping past the giant trucks at the traffic light and finding the way to the garage for repairs. This interactive mini board book will enthrall any child who has entered that developmental phase characterized by an obsession with all things truck. Readers pull, flip, flap, and slide the merry green tow truck through its mission, and cheer at a job well done.

Be prepared for some repairs on the little green truck itself: small, eager fingers will make quick work of the sturdy--yet never sturdy enough--tabs and flaps. For more fun with transportation, collect Ken Wilson-Max's other interactive board books: Little Red Plane, Big Silver Space Shuttle, and Big Blue Engine. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for church or the car!
This book is great for when we need to have our children- ages one and three- entertain themselves quietly. It is perfect for church and its small size allows me to keep it in my purse or diaper bag for other times. There are a lot of parts for them to move or connect with each other. However, I do agree that the parts are not very durable and we are now on our second copy of the book- but it is well worth the money!

3-0 out of 5 stars Please make the moving parts sturdier!!
We have bought 5 of Ken Wilson-Max's books--2 of the titles twice over because they fell apart badly. As much as our 2-1/2 year old son loves the stories, pictures and movable parts, the moving parts lasted average of 3 readings before they came apart. Only if Mr. WIlson-Max could come up with ways to reinforce those moving parts so that they will last long enough to pass the books down to our infant son . . . I would be happy to buy all his titles over again for our younger son, if a new version with sturdier moving parts became available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Green Tow Truck
We have the 4 -7 year old version and our grandchildren love it. It's a bit too fragile for the young kids so we are ordering a replacement because they use it so much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for toddlers. Moving parts are too delicate.
My 2-year old son really enjoyed all the moving parts, especially the one where you can have the tow truck lift the car. He can't really do it alone. We let a couple of five year-olds play with it for a few minutes and they immediately wrecked the "lifting the car" feature. It DOES make my son laugh out loud, though, and that counts for a lot. We just use it with supervision. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps kids understand medication without fear or shame.
I keep a couple of copies of this book in my office. It uses humorous illustrations as well as concrete examples to help children understand why they need to take medication for AD/HD.

Otto, a young car, visits a special engine mechanic and receives an engine treatment to help him run at the right speed. The author uses this metaphor to explain the nature of AD/HD, and the process of getting a psychiatric evaluation. It suggests some good questions that the the child might want to ask about medication. I particularly liked the way the book discussed potential side effects and how it encouraged the child to discuss this with his or her doctor.

The book is aimed at elementary school children and some pre-schoolers. ... Read more

Trucks that plow, trucks that roll, trucks that haul, trucks that lift--Matt just can't get enough of his favorite toys. When asked to clean his room, he puts away his trucks, socks, and teddy bears, but not in the way his mom probably intended. With each succeeding page, his toy trucks grow, until Matt is driving the mammoth vehicles over the rubble of his bedroom, scooping up laundry and hockey sticks. As the trucks increase in size, so do the words in the margins describing what the trucks are doing (pushing, rolling, scooping, loading). Finally, Matt's room is clean, his trucks in a basket, and he's ready to go outside where a whole other world of bulldozers, backhoes, and tractors awaits!

Truck-love is as inevitable a developmental stage as crawling and toilet training. This book is sure to be an all-time favorite, with its bright yellow gouache paintings of trucks, trucks, and more trucks. Peter Sís has a knack for this kind of focused look at childhood passions. He has written and illustrated many popular picture books, including another trucky treatise, Fire Truck. (Preschool)--Emilie Coulter ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Trucks....
I was surprised that this book was rated for ages 4-8. My 6 year old is certainly beyond the one word per page board books. My 2 year old might like it, but my truck-loving 6 year old is totally bored by it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever, imaginative book on trucks
This book tells the story of a little boy picking up his room and putting all his toy trucks away. As the trucks are put away, they are seen from the little boy's point of view. The trucks become larger on each page, and many different types of trucks are shown in simple, clear illustrations. My child realy enjoys this book, and I do too -- it is humorous and clever on many levels. ... Read more

What could be better to a fan of fire trucks than playing with them and reading about them all day long? Well, how about being one! That is just what happens to Matt, a little boy whose first and last words every day are "fire truck." Imagine his happy surprise when he wakes up one morning and discovers he has sprouted wheels, flashing lights, and sirens! Matt wastes no time. He drives around the "neighborhood" (his house) rescuing cats and teddy bears, and putting out fires. There's only one thing that can tear this dedicated fire truck away from his work: pancakes on the table!

Peter Sís's wonderful red and black gouache illustrations are old-fashioned in their sweet simplicity. Combined with a little counting practice thrown in for good measure (one driver, two ladders, three hoses, on up to 10 boots), this book is bound to please the fire-truck-obsessed child on your list. Sís is the award-winning illustrator of many well-known books, including another excellent ode to vehicles, Trucks, Trucks, Trucks. (Preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!
My son loves this book!! We read it several times a day. It is easy to relate to if you have a firetruck crazy child. I also like the fact that counting in incorporated into the story. I highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the younger fire truck crazy set
At 18 months, my son couldn't get enough of this book, and at two, he still asks for it frequently. I think the age range for the book is too high, causing the frustration expressed by other reviewers. The simple illustrations are perfect for the younger child, and the counting feature is terrific. For older kids, try Fireman Small.

1-0 out of 5 stars What happened to the rest of the book?
Not at all impressed. The story ended abruptly. My three year old son and I were wondering if someone ripped the rest of the pages out

5-0 out of 5 stars Imaginative and fun Fire Truck book!
My two year old son really enjoys this book -- so does his two year old cousin (we gave him a copy!). This is an imaginative story about a little boy who loves fire trucks. When he "becomes" a fire truck, the little boy puts out a fire, rescues a cat and teddy bear, and finally, drawn by the smell of pancakes, pulls up at the kitchen table where he parks his truck. The last picture shows the little boy eating a large plate of pancakes. The illustrations are great -- simple but clever drawings. On one page, there is a large diagram of a fire truck, and the items on the fire truck can be counted -- 2 ladders, 3 hoses, 10 boots, etc.). As an adult, I appreciate having interesting children's books around the house as I will be reading them over and over. This one is a winner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not real impressed
I expected a lot more from a book. There's only about 50 words or so. My 3 year old son is the biggest devotee of fire trucks around, and he got bored with this book after only a couple of readings.

This would have worked a lot better as a board book/picture book for babies. The artwork is excellent and colorful. But as a bedtime story book, it just doesn't hold up. ... Read more

We were so surprised by the variety of "things" to move and do and see in this book! My brother sent it for our daughter as a surprise and we all love the book. The story is about a new bulldozer that the reader needs to help test......check the fluids, make sure the back hoe works, make sure the bucket works, turn the steering wheel and check the gears, turn the wheels to make sure all the parts work together smoothly. Very, very fun and neat book. Just a few words per page but does not detract from the fun at all. Probably better for the youngest bulldozer testers! Enjoy. ... Read more
