4-0 out of 5 stars fun lift-the-flap book with some flap issues
My son loves this book, and what's not to love! There are five large two-page spreads, each featuring a different kind of truck (moving van, fire engine, recycle truck, pickup in a farm setting, and dump trucks at a construction site). Each has about ten flaps to lift. Furthermore, the flaps are a cut above the usual, sometimes showing the same person in a different activity or the same object in a different pose (e.g. the fire engine ladder folded in the original but extended when the flap is lifted), and sometimes accompanied by explanatory text ("The rescue boom is a tall ladder that can reach five or six stories high. It can turn in every direction."). The pictures are filled with activity and there are enough flaps so that each time you and your child will find something new and interesting to look at.

I would give this book five stars if there weren't problems with the flaps. They are perforated but not already separated, and are difficult for a child to open initially. An adult should go through the book first and open them. Also, the flaps are thin cardboard and will tear easily if your child is so inclined.

1-0 out of 5 stars flaps not easy to initially open, too few pages.
It was difficult to get the flaps open on all of the pieces without damaging them. We had to use a butter knife to initially open them, and then they did not hinge well. A few got ripped even when opening them with care because the perforations were not complete. Also, there are only 5 pages to this book (moving, fire, recycling, farm and dump trucks). It's not quite worth it considering the quality of the book's manufacture.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son can't put it down
We just received this book today from Amazon and I have already read it with my 20 month old son more than ten times. He loves trucks and this book has all the favorites - big moving truck, dump truck, tractor - you get the picture. There is even a recycling truck where you can open the different compartments to see plastic, metal, etc. What I really like about this book is that it will grow with him because although he is interested in opening the flaps to find things he recognizes, there are interesting descriptions on each page to read that he will enjoy more when he is older. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Help with potty training
I've been trying to potty train my 3 year old for almost a year and finally I have something to get him excited about using his potty! He gets a Construction Truck sticker every time he goes and gets to put it on his "potty chart" (a big sheet of paper that I drew train tracks on). He also enjoys the train stickers very much. It's a lot of fun for him, seeing his trains get longer as he adds more cars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hardworking Trucks.....
Get up early in the dark, quiet morning, and join the workers traveling to the worksite. It's time to "get to work, trucks!" There are big trucks and little trucks, busy all day, and hard at work. Meet the loader and the dump truck. Watch the digger dig a deep hole, and the bulldozer push dirt into other holes. The cement mixer is hard at work mixing and mixing. The crane lifts beams high in the sky, and the roller flattens the road on the ground. And as a special treat, see if you can find the visitor on each page who just can't get enough of heavy equipment.... Don Carter's simple, descriptive text, written in short sentences, is kept to a minimum. The real story is told through his bold, bright, and busy, eye-popping illustrations. Each two page spread dazzles with vivid color, texture, energy, and humor, and little ones will be itching to hop aboard the dump truck, or maybe the bulldozer, or crane, and get right to work. Perfect for preschoolers, Get To Work Trucks is an engaging and informative little gem of a book, that's sure to become an instant favorite at your house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Storytime!
Using acrylic paint, foam board and plaster to create his colorful illustrations, the artist and author has created an entertaining look at the heavy equipement needed to build a bridge. Each double-paged spread has one or two sentences describing the action. A turtle who gets in the way of the construction workers is never mentioned, but provides humorous visual action in the story. Although the illustrations appear bold and simple, there is enough detail to invite close inspection of each picture. This will work very well as a book for a child to look at alone, and for use in group sharing, such as storytime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We love Big Joe!
I loved this book as a kid 25 years ago, and now I love reading it to my 20-month old son. My son loves Joe, too, and wants to read it over and over. Joe seems like such a friendly, hard-working fellow, and he's a wonderful example for kids. The illustrations are about the best I've ever seen in a children's book, so good, in fact, I sometimes pick it up even after my son goes to bed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Joe's Trailer Truck
We purchased this book for our son who is now 14, I saved all his baby books, and now we've got a new son, 19 months..both of them have enjoyed this book immensely! The cut-away view of the truck is wonderful, the illustrations so detailed and accurate..this book is one of the best out there for truck- loving toddlers...a must have, and a classic in our house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loffes Langtradare (the swedich title)
I have read this book at least 100 times to my son Bjorn. And I still enjoy reading it!!! I think that says somthing of the quality of the thing. Bjorn is now 4 years old and we started when he was about 2.5 years old. The book has very good illustrations, detailed enough to be interesting even after a hundred times! We usually start to look at the x-ray drawing of the truck, talking of where the radiator is and whats it for, why there is a fire extinguisher beside the drivers seat etc, etc...

I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is good for generations
When my brother was little, this was his favorite book. It is detailed, in pictures and discriptions, with plenty to fuel the imagination. I remember reading it to him, and he learned it so well that we could leave words out and he would fill them in as we read it.

I am a mother of a little boy of my own, now, and was thrilled to discover it was still in print! I am reading it to my own son, who already enjoys it and gets it out to look at himself.

If you have a toddler boy, be sure to keep a copy of this book in your home library! They will love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Factual and Fun
My father owns a trucking company and my mother used to read Big Joe's Trailer Truck to us all the time when we were little. 5-0 out of 5 stars Many levels of fun and learning
My son loves this book. There is a matchbox model of a streetsweeper that accompanies the book. He holds the sweeper while we read the book. There is a simple rhyming repetition on each page which is fun to read. The story tells how the sweeper cleans up after a street fair. It also shows the different parts of the sweeper and the child can find them on the sweeper model. The back page is for parents, and offers suggestions of how to look for different shapes as you go through the book, as well as around your home surroundings. I highly recommend this book, but you must be very observant of your children if they are under 3, because of the small parts on the sweeper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Though a Commercial for the Cat, It Is Great for Children
There are children, yes-- both boys and girls, that are extremely fascinated by large and very capable machines. In fact, if you are a parent who has to stop at every pit, new road, or excavation because you have a child who says, "Mom!/Dad!, STOP!!! I want to look at this," this book is for your family.

Children see major equipment all the time. ... Because Caterpillar had the wisdom to put these machines in a context at their level (i.e. learning the alphabet because a BIG machine begins with the letter), it makes it easier for parents and educators to help children learn the reasons why to learn to read. Each letter of the alphabet has a giant Caterpillar machine or some aspect of it that goes with it. The page features a photograph of the machine or the part with an easily understood description of it.

Caterpillar, the company, is featured in this alphabet book and I never thought this would happen. They saw the connection to children. ... I am sending this alphabet book to them when I send their children other books for their birthdays.

Though a commercial for the Cat, it is great for children. It's good! It belongs in elementary school libraries and in the home libraries of busy boys and girls. Active sandboxes demand it. . . and so do future civil engineers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intricate and lighthearted
We have another one of her books, Blimps, which we enjoy. So my son picked this one out at the library. We had a lot of fun with it. We sat for almost half an hour looking at the pictures. My son had fun showing me things he found on his own. We went every maze and traced it with out fingers. Then we had to look for the letters and pictures that he liked. This was very helpful, since he's just learning his letters.

Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Time Consuming and Challenging Maze Book
Book is great. It has 13 mazes to complete both forward and backward. All are streets on which you drive paper cars. Each maze is different - city, neighborhood, zoo, golf course, rural, mountains, etc. Not only do you complete the maze, but you are also challenged to find objects in the maze that begin with a certain letter, and you are asked to find certain hidden letters on each page, plus more challenges. My 5 year old son loves to trace through the maze and find the objects (especially the different cars and trucks). He spends hours with it and hasn't tired of it yet. The mazes are very detailed and illustrated beautifully. ... Read more

David Kirk, creator of the bestselling favorites Miss Spider's Tea Party and Miss Spider's Wedding, has created another deliciously quirky, rhyming Miss Spider adventure. This time the amiable arachnid is car-shopping with her husband Holley. At Mantis Motors, a praying mantis named Mik is a used car sales-insect: "Mik Mantis crooned, 'This honey runs/On Nectar from a flower./Its two-stem engine is equipped/With turbo-bumble power,/And capable of reaching speeds/Near ninety yards per hour!'"

Miss (or is it now Mrs.?) Spider and Holley explore other car lots (including Meg's Wings n' Things) and encounter a few near misses, but all ends well thanks to the help of benevolent Moth Sue. The book's clever and original verse is laced with subtle ironies that won't be lost on you or your little ones; in the first spread, for example, a note arrives "snail mail," because the postal carrier is a snail. Kirk's exuberant, luminous colors and hilarious, cartoonish depictions of the bug world are truly wonderful. Miss Spider's New Car is the perfect book for any child who loves cars or bugs--not to mention a clever gift for any adult itching to buy his or her dream car. (Ages 4 to 8) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars she loves the "chuggy buggy"
My 2 year old loves this book. She loves the variety of silly sounds and she is delighted by the pictures. We love reading it to her. Now on to the rest of the Miss Spider series......

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures
Quite by accident we stumbled upon MISS SPIDER"S TEA PARTY when my granddaughter was five. That book was to be touched, read, and taken to bed a many nights before she fell in love with the next one (MISS SPIDER'S WEDDING). The rhyming does not take away from the message of virtues that can be found in any culture. Holley is her hero because he wears glasses and shows kindness. We have collected all of Mr. Kirk's books and can't wait for future books to be presented. The vividness and texture of the pages held her attention long after we had finished reading a particular page. She clapped and cheered for Holley and wanted explanations of phrases that at that time was beyond her comprehension. Now she reads these books herself and although she has them memorized by heart; she still turns page by page to view the characters and touch the colors. What a wonderful way to start on the pathway of reading for fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chuggy Buggy is the Best
My daughter loves the line about the Chuggy Buggy and this is her favorite of the Miss Spider books. Of the three it is the one we read the most. She loves it and I have to admit it is pretty fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the strongest entry in the series
The illstrations, while vivid, are a bit obtuse and difficult to discern. The prose doesn't flow. The book simply can't stand alone the way the "counting Book" and Miss Spider's Mom, do. If your child is hooked on Miss Spider, then this will be a fun addition to your collection, but it shouldn't be your first choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Spider's Wedding
This book is pure poetry; a tender love story with rhyming language that flows to the ear like warm honey. It presents softly the mystery of attraction, devotion and pairing between individuals who from outward appearances are totally unsuited for one another. Dramatically illustrated, the romance between aphid and arachnid teaches tolerance for and acceptance of those who are different from ourselves. Its lyrical vocabulary is satisfying to the adult reader as well as little people. In fact, it brings tears to my daughter-in-law's eyes when she reads it to Jack and Mimi. ... Read more
