5-0 out of 5 stars John's Truck
This is an excellent book for three and up. My son enjoys the realistic pictures and the engaging story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truck Trouble no trouble for little ones!
I bought this book on a whim one year ago when my daughter was 3 years old. I wasn't sure if she would like a book about trucks. The first time I read it to her, she fell in love with it. She loves the pictures and story about the truck driver, his life in his truck (complete with bed), and his troubles on the road. I still have to read this book to her, now that she is four years old and into princess fairies. I highly recommend this book for all kids, even if you think they may not be truck lovers. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars buyer beware!
This book has great photos and provides a very basic overveiw of the trucking industry. I would reccommend this book to any school library. Don't be fooled, this book is not written to help with answering more technical questions that would be sort after by students taking lessons for a career in the trucking industry... For this I strongly reccomend "Bumper to Bumper"

5-0 out of 5 stars Tractor-Trailer Trucker is exciting!
A Powerful Truck Book where we get to hook up the tractor to the trailer; load the cargo & inspect the rig. Put the truck in gear - you should see how many they have - pull onto the highway & head out in the driver's seat.

Before starting out there's a lot to do: check under the hood for fluid levels, shock absorbers & frayed hoses & wiring. Check the tires, load the cargo & do your circle check. Phew! That took a lot of time & now it's breakfast at the truck stop & then off on the road with all its sights & sounds, dreams & driving

With bold, bright photos & simple, engaging language, Joyce Slayton Mitchell & Stephen Borns takes us through a tractor-trailer trucker's day. They even provide us with a glossary & a page of trucker talk terms.

A grand learning & talking book - a must for every kid, young & old, who drools at the sight of tractor-trailers, juggernauts, behemoths! I loved this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for learning
I think that this book is good for learning because it tells about tractor-trailers. It also tells how they fix trucks. The photos show good photographs in your head with the words. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Pictures and Explanations
This book has very good pictures with thouroughly explained explanations. Great for a kid that likes cars and wants to learn what the parts do and the history of them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a strong treatment of the subject
Like other volumes in the Eyewitness Books series, Car is full of beautiful photographs and countless interesting tidbits. Initial topics, focusing on both the old-time automobiles as well as how they fit into society, were quite interesting. However, the portions on the innards of the car became technical and rather boring. It reads like a poorly-translated repair manual at times. My wife and I both felt that it should have stayed with the cultural aspects of automobiles--for example, what has its role been in non-European and non-American societies? Also, a stunning omission is the lack of information on future designs and current experimentation. Not recommended except on a cursory basis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun for car wash enthusiasts
Sandra and Susan Steen have written many children's books together (yup, they're sisters), and "Car Wash" is especially enjoyable. Kiddos who love car washes will get a kick out of the ride here, as the siblings in the back seat pretend that they are deep-sea adventurers. But even kids who are spooked by going through the car wash will enjoy it, too, as it suggests a different attitude and a different approach for their next trip.

G. Brian Karas has done some remarkably imaginative illustrations here, incorporating paint, glass beads, strips of sponge and fabric, and so on to create a textural collage. It's lots of fun, and perfectly complements the manner in which a car wash incorporates all different sounds, smells, and rhythms.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR SMALL CHILDREN--EXCELLENT
What a great adventure---to experience a car wash. This book brings a child out of the car and into another world experiencing an imaginative view of a car wash. With plentiful colors and big illustrations, this book is an excellent choice for young children who cannot read or just beginning to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for car wash enthusiasts!
My almost three year old daughter loves going to the car wash and she loves this book. The simple story is about two kids and a parent who take their muddy car through the car wash. As they go through the wash the kids imagine their car is a submarine and they have an underwater adventure. They kids imagine they pass coral reefs, sea monsters, sharks, and a giant octupus. Once the car is clean, the family goes out to lunch and then it's oh no! dirty car all over again. The illustrations are done collage style using fabric, pearls, and buttons. It's a very cute story and an easy read. Whenever I am tired and my daughter is begging for a story I reach for this book. There are very few words on the page so I can sit back, relax, and let her narrate the story for me. We both really enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Young Children
This is one of those books you can act out and do sound effects for. The illustrations are very original--they seem to be collages of found objects.

The book is an account of the children's imaginary journey underwater while going through the car wash. Very appealing to preschoolers. Not too many words per page, so it keeps young children interested. My 3-year-old son loves it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The fanciful tale of a car wash adventure
It's time to take the car to the car wash when the family automobile goes through a huge puddle and gets thoroughly splashed by the muddy water. The car wash is a fascinating place that requires closed windows while traveling through a foamy deluge where giant octopus arms whomp against the windows, creatures hide in seaweed, and tidal waves come crashing. Enchantingly illustrated by G. Brian Karas, Sandra and Susan Steen's fanciful tale of a car wash adventure is highly recommended and entertaining reading for youngsters preschool through first grade. ... Read more

Book Description

As hard as she tries, the ugly truckling cannot keep up with her brothers and sisters. She can't pull logs, she can't carry hay, and her three small wheels are no match for their four big, strong ones. She'll never be a good truck. So the ugly truckling runs away from home in search of her own identity -- and finds out that she may not be such an ugly truckling after all.

David Gordon's fresh twist on a familiar tale is as endearing as it is poignant.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for a family that has adopted
I realize this is a spin off the classic The Ugly Duckling but I would think in this day and age it would be played up to respect and recognize that not all family members look alike now. Interracial marriages/families and those families that adopt a child of a different race may want to avoid this book.

The little airplane realizes he doesn't look like his truckling siblings as they peer at him and taunt him for not fitting in or looking like them. He ventures out and meets others asking if he is one of them and still doesn't fit in until he sees more airplanes. Then he feels he has met his family and where he belongs. This book could create confusion and feelings of not belonging to any child that does not look like his/her parents or siblings.

That said, I loved the illustration in this book. Kudos for that but none for the author for not modernizing this story to recognize diversity.

5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing book
the story is profoundly charming and the paintings are simply breathtaking.
Few kid's books out there have both and I would recommend this one to
any one who's kid loves trucks and airplanes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ugly Duckling Revisited
"The Ugly Truckling" is a simplified adaptation of the classic fairy tale, "The Ugly Duckling" by Hans Christian Andersen. While the original duckling story offers some suspense, this story will be obvious to all but the very youngest of children.

A small airplane is somehow born to a family of trucks and fails to fit in while the rest of the family performs truck-like activities, like hauling loads. Obviously, we as readers know that the "ugly truckling" isn't a truck, but a plane, as evidenced by the illustrations. All we have to do is watch the plane ask other machinery, like a tractor and windmill, what it is. Finally, the little plane looks up and knows where it belongs when it sees a group of planes flying overhead. It then happily flies away into the sunset. Children with a love for trucks, planes and other machinery will likely adore this simple story that accommodates a toddler's short attention span. Children may also like predicting the story's solution on the first page as they recognize the plane. The illustrations are bright and convey the wide open space of the prairie.

Overall, a sweet and simple story recommended for the toddler and preschool sets. Older children will be bored. ... Read more
