5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice for Tractor Lover
My toddler loves this book so much, the library should just sell it to us! That's why I'm buying it now. It's from British publisher Usborne, so some words may seem different to an American audience. However it doesn't impede the great artwork or the myriad farm equipment explained in the pages. Usborne typically produces quality books, and this one is no exception. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner
I have read all of Mr. Welling's books and bought them for my nieces and nephews. While the writing is directed at children, many of the illustrations have such subtle nuances that an adult can take great pleasure in reading the books along with their children. (For example, in Justin's home there are books on the shelf. An adult will understand the humor being conveyed, especially those familiar with Mr. Welling's other works.)

Justin Potemkin starts as fast as an Indy race; from the first page to the middle of the book, the reader enjoys brilliant writing and skillful illustrations, weaving a fictional story of the origins of the Indianapolis 500 Race from, of all places, Russia. The irony and play on words keep the adults captivated along with their children. The story wraps up nicely with Justin prevailing here in the States with the creation of the Indy 500 Race.

As much as I like Justin Potemkin I still think Andrew McGroundhog was Mr. Welling's crowning achievement. You just can't improve upon perfection but Potemkin is still a great book and its premise, writing and illustrations deserve 5 stars. Buy it and you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best release by Mr. Welling to date
I have been a big fan of Mr Wellings childrens books since a local grade school turned my daughter on to a copy of 'Andrew McGroundhog and his shady shadow'. I was then in touch with the author via his website (http://www.peterjwelling.com), and he notifies me of upcoming projects. This book, his latest, is my facorite to date because of my love for indy-car type racing. Although I am primarily a CART fan, this book is more 'general', and references 500 history in general, including a touching dedication to Tony Bettenhausen. His works are so refreshing compared to most childrens books, which are repetitive and boring. A must have for anyone with children, and a thirst for challenging reading that teaches AND entertains, something that is hard to accomplish and rare to find. A five star read. Cant wait to find out whats next.........

5-0 out of 5 stars Justin Potemkin and the 500-Mile Race
What a great book. As a race fan with a 4 year old this is an easy pick at bed time. This is easy to read, extremely funny and very well illustrated with great colors that kids and adults will love.

I love how Mr. Welling wove historical and culture fact into the racing story line. With writing like this the book will be read for years and years and appreciated in a different way everytime it's read. Keep an eye out for all of the little signs and characters and racing / cultural reference in the background! It's like literary "I Spy".

Happy Reading! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Shiny Red Convertible...Some Things Never Change!
This endearing yet simple story book written by the talented Lois Lenski features her signature illustrations and tells the tale of Mr. Small and his pride and joy, the little auto. Written in 1934 this book follows Mr. Small in his jaunty suit, bow tie and derby hat as he cruises around town in his shiny red convertible. The other traffic on the road includes a horse and buggy, a trolley car, and some startled chickens and ducks. We tool along down Main Street with Mr. Small, put the top up when it rains, fix a flat tire, and pay a visit to the filling station. Mr. Small and his little auto are utterly charming and the way this book captures the gentle atmosphere of a bygone day warms the heart. Kids will love it and so will the folks who read to them. Lois Lenski's picture books are never long on plot or action, but they are delightfully colorful and whimsical. Her books, no matter their publication date, seem to capture human nature that runs true throughout the stream of time. Look what she says about a man and his car. "Mr. Small has a little Auto. It is red and shiny. He likes to look at it." Travel around your own town on a sunny Saturday morning...you'll see Mr. Small is alive and well. Enjoy this book and all of Lois Lenski's other charmers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 1934 Gem
An old-fashioned, quaint and charming book for young children. My boys (ages 3 and 1) pull it off the bookshelf a few times a week and bring it to me to read to them. The references to passing a horse and buggy, stopping for the trolley car, and waiting for the policeman to switch the "stop-go" signal are throwbacks to a simpler time. Delightful and highly recommended. ... Read more
