Book Description

L. Rifkin proves once and for all that every cat is born to live and die nine times. In fact, the familiar myth is turned completely on its head in this remarkable book. The secret world of cats is revealed in this epic tale of feline civil war, where we meet young Romeo, a stray who finds himself battered between two very different worlds. It's the domestic cats, the Sticks, vs. the street cats, the Alleys. As battle lines are drawn, warriors train for combat and a hero emerges to inspire a nation.Fraught with danger from page one, Romeo loses his family at the claws of Fidel and his gang of vicious Alleys. After being rescued from the Pound, Romeo finds a new home with "his person", 9-year-old Dennis Crumb. As long as Romeo stays inside with his adopted family he's safe, however, when he ventures out he finds danger lurking around every corner.Fortunately, Queen Elizabeth, a wise cat who lives nearby, befriends Romeo. She takes him to the Factory, a burned-out building where other Sticks secretly learn how to defend themselves from the Alleys and the indifferent humans of the city. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE NINE LIVES OF ROMEO CRUMB-LIFE ONE
This is a wonderful book filled with detailed storytelling, visual images that stimulate the imagination, and witty dialogue.L. Rifkin takes us inside the world of cats as they live their lives, and soon one forgets they are cats because the situations are so humanlike. Both my 3rd grader and my 6th grader loved Romeo and his friends and villains, which prompted me to read the book as well.Children have become such sophistacted readers since the emergence of "Harry Potter", and I feel L. Rifkin never talks down to them and presents the dangers of animal life accurately and with fun.We can't wait for "Life Two."

1-0 out of 5 stars Are we all reading the same book?
I took this book out of the library to read to my 6-year-old, largely based on its "award" from the Film Advisory Board which called it a great book "for all ages". I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.

The book is incredibly violent, with graphic descriptions of the injuries that befall the characters. The writing seems to glory in coming up with the most gratuitously disgusting way possible to describe events.

Its villians frequent their version of a bar and erotic dance club, and the head villain has a "girlfriend" who is pretty clearly a prostitute.

Ms. Rifkin's portrayals of her characters are hardly sympathetic, since even Romeo's friends are portrayed largely as buffoons. Even Romeo, the supposed sensitive guy laughs at his friends embarassments and misfortunes.

The burping and bodily function humor that seems to be a requirement for children's media lately is amply present. (Do we really need to hear about how often Darla needs to pee when she's nervous? Never mind that in one passage the weak bladder mysteriously transfers to Tabitha.)

The story seems ragged and aimless sometimes, with the main goal appearing to be appealing to the gross-out contingent of the audience.

Finally, the spelling and grammar is, well, challenged. Grisly (which the story certainly is) is spelled "grizzly". Every time there is a foul odor, it is "fowl". Any number of words are used that make it seem Ms. Rifkin sold her only dictionary in a garage sale. So much for her being a teacher. If she's trying to write in the voice of her supposed target audience, she clearly doesn't have much regard for their abilities.

I cringe at the idea of reading this to ANY child. Even if they are old enough to handle the imagery, there is a host of books out there that are better written. It also gives me cause to wonder just what standards are being used by the organizations reviewing such books.

Off to find something worth reading . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Like Harry Potter!
Parents! Do you long for the days of the Harry Potter books when you could not get your children to stop reading? I even heard myself say to my 12 year old son: "Please stop reading for a while. Do something else. Anything. Play a video game. You can't spend every waking minute of the day reading!" The Nine Lives of Romeo Crumb is the answer to your prayers: A book the kids won't be able to put down.My 12 year old son loved the book, and is looking forward the publication of the second book in the series. This is from a boy who was a little reluctant to read the book since he was not too crazy about a book about cats. So take the plunge and buy the book. I am sure you, and your kids, will not be disappointed. Also, the writer is a school teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romeo Crumb is a winner
My two children, ages 8 and 10, enjoyed reading the adventures that Romeo, Ms. Purrpurr, Queen Elizabeth, and all the other fascinating felines encountered. We took turns reading the book to each other and it was a wonderful bonding experience, similar to the bonding of Romeo and his new friends. We are anxious for Life Two to be released.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Nine Lives of Romeo Crumb
Every child should read about Romeo's feline adventures. It was a rare treat to see my grandchild's imagination take flight. Thank you Ms.Rifkin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty and Wise
This book is a family favorite. Children can identify with the kitten who worries that his misdeeds will cut off his mother's love, while parents reading the book are rewarded with some sly illustrations over which they can have an adult laugh, a rare quality in preschool bookland.

Above all, the book provides an opportunity for parents to reassure their own occasionally naughty offspring of their unconditional love. Our family culture would be poorer without this book in our lives; I'm grateful that it was available to us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite
I have 3 children - ages 3,6 and 8. "The Way Mothers Are" is one of our favorite books. I strongly recommend it everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars mother- child bonding

BUY IT NOW! you wont be disappointed

5-0 out of 5 stars A poignant description of a mother's love for her child
I loved this book! As a mother of two young children I appreciated the honest description of the mischievious child who is loved in spite of himself. I found the book very moving and couldn't help but see the correlation to God's love for us in spite of ourselves. I can highly recommend this book to all mothers - and children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever Fat Cat is a Charmer!
My 2 year old daughter loves this book! She has memorized it and can "read" it to herself! Fat Cat finds himself in a tree and becomes responsible for the eggs in a birds' nest. Fat Cat's friends want him to play but he declines as he is helping the little birdies hatch from the eggs. It teaches a a very timely lesson of accepting responsibility for your actions. This is not a lift-a-flap book, however there are 2 pages that unfold to advance the story. My daughter loves to open those pages. Also, with its big print and simple text, it is a great book for children who are just learning how to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Catbook by a wonderful writer
I think I have not had a more pleasant reading experience than sitting down next to a burning fire place, listening to my favorite antique clock ticking.. the patter of rain on the window panes and reading James Herriott. It is a memory of that afternoon that all these years later I have never forgotten. James Herriott is the most pleasant, relaxing, refreshing writer. Forget all the worries and cares and escape for a few minutes into a quiet world where the animals speak their own language.. A wonderful book, a wonderful writer. Thank You James Herriott for the memories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oscar, Cat-About-Town
I really enjoyed reading this book. I think that anyone who reads this will feel more comfortable in nowing that many people may love them and that it is okay to have more than one "family." Many love you just the same and they can care for you in their own special way.I think Oscar is unique and even though this is just a book I respect the characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cat lovers, take note!
Warm, homey illustrations that almost seem to glow are paired nicely with the sweet storyline. As always, James Herriott knows his animals, and can capture their essence on paper.I have known cats like Oscar, who is most definitely a "people" cat--he loves to be in the thick of things!--and reading Oscar's story was like a touch of nostalgia. If your little one loves animals, do get them this book.I have a hunch they'll like it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Standing "O" for Opera Cat
Although I am fond of neither cats nor opera, Opera Cat left me begging for an encore! The story is perky, fun and deceptively sophisticated. Readers of any age will identify with the dreams and yearnings of Alma, the cat, and will enjoy the multi-leveled humor of this charming tale set in Milan. As a retired early-childhood educator, I was attracted by the stunning style and vocabulary of Opera Cat and by the lyricism and whimsy of its illustrations. Definitely a Read Aloud for the grandchildren!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, mischevious fun
Mr. Putter and his orange-striped cat, Tabby, enjoy Fall because they love pear jelly. One day, the pears on his tree are ripe, so Mr. Putter sets out to climb his ladder and pick them. Unfortunately, his "cranky knees" will not cooperate. He must think of another way to get the pears down from the tree.

His solution will make children and their parents laugh, while subtly illustrating creativity, problem-solving, sharing and even kindness to animals. An all around wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hold This One to Your Heart
Here is a gem in the huggable series about old Mr. Putter and his beloved old feline companion Tabby.

Mr. Putter is very happy because it is Fall and he is thinking about juicy things like apples and pears...and it just so happens he has a pear tree right outside his house. He tells Tabby they can pick the pears and make them into jelly, and both their mouths start to water.

But the problem, as we all know, is that Mr. Putter has cranky legs, and Tabby has a cranky tail...and neither of them can manage the job of climbing the ladder to pick the pears. Tabby handles it by curling into a cat circle and going to sleep. Mr. Putter handles it by accepting what he cannot change. But when the two go home...they find a BIG SURPRISE!

This book is appropriate for the youngest child through (ahem) adulthood...it can be enjoyed on levels you would not believe. Buy it for your child and hold it to your heart. You will never, ever, forget it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series
As an adult I love these stories. They are repetitive and have a rhythm. This is what the kids love about the books. My son loves the part where Mr. Putter's knees are cranky. Instead of using the word old, decrepit, or any other word that may be over the heads of kids; they used cranky. Kids can relate to this word!It is a true story of friendship. This is a funny story.Kids will love making their predictions as to how the book ends. This is the type of book to let them practice with predictions. It is easy enough that a beginner to chapter books would have an easy time with this book. The words are simple and so is the storyline. This is why Cynthia Rylant's books are all terrific! I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wondeful Autumn Story - Mr. Putter and Tabby Style!
The Mr. Putter and Tabby series are the sort of books that I would have loved to have when I was a beginning reader. I know that I would have read them over and over again to no end, even once they began to fall apart from constant use. That's why I am so glad that Mr. Putter and Tabby are around now while my youngest brother is learning to read. The non-repetitious (words are repeated, but not enough to become explicit), non-rhyming storytelling contained within the books makes them a pleasure to read continually, unlike many other easy-reader books. And in my opinion, the Mr. Putter and Tabby books are a step in front of Ms. Rylant's Henry and Mudge collection, due to the fact that, in their own way, they create an appreciation for the elderly as the reader comes to love Mr. Putter, the aging main character whose only companion is his cat, Tabby.

In Mr. Putter and Tabby Pick the Pears, the fourth book in the series, Mr. Putter attempts to pick the pears from the tree in his backyard. The ailments that come with old age try to keep him from accomplishing his task, but Mr. Putter soon comes up with a witty and humorous solution that will have everyone laughing while they continue turning pages to see how it all ends.

Mr. Howard's cartoon-style illustrations greatly enhance this wonderful story, which is written in such a format to be used as either a 3-chapter book for the beginning reader, or a bedtime story that is longer in length. Either way, the Mr. Putter and Tabby books would be a great find for emerging readers' shelves. Like having a kindly old grandpa next door, they only make life richer!

5-0 out of 5 stars 4year old son and I both adore this book...
I wish we lived next door to Mr. Putter! This is such a nice book. The part where Mr. Putter cuts up an old pair of boxer shorts to get elastic to make a slingshot is just silly enough to please a potty-humor-newbie, yet is still tasteful.

My son loved all the descriptions of "juicy things"...apple cider, apple pie, pear jelly, apple turnovers.Every time we read this book, he wants to make a different "juicy thing".

I love the comfortable companionship between Mr. Putter and Tabby, as well as the wonderful drawings. This book makes me want to check out the other Mr. Putter and Tabby books! ... Read more

Alexander Furby is a young kitten who is curious about the world around him. Venturing beyond the garden fence, Alexander finds a world of trees and other creatures, like dogs. Alexander is brave, but not brave enough to claw at the dogs. He scrambles up a tree and waits for help. In the morning, strange help comes from a kitten with wings, one that does not talk. She takes him back to a barn where other cats with wings, her brothers and sisters, live. Alexander finds out from them that her name is Jane. He decides that he wants to do something special for his friend. But what can an ordinary cat do for one with wings?
I thought that this was a cute book, but one for younger people. I gave it three stars because it is really at the reading level of an 7-9 year old.

Alexander is a cat. He is the biggest and the strongest but very bossy. He went off exploring. He was chased by dogs. He got stuck in a tree. One of the catwings (Jane) came to help him. She brought him home to his family. The owner of his family said to Susan that she could keep Alexander. I liked the book because Alexander goes on adventures, He goes to a farm and sees a cow and says to the cow don't say moo say mew. I think you should buy this book if you like cats you will like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandma and her little cho cho love this book!
My Grandson, at age 2 years and 9 months picked this out because of the picture on the cover. I thought he wouldn't understand and enjoy it because of the British expressions. Was I ever wrong! He loves it and I love reading it to him. After two days he was playfully using the expression "I'll be in a pickle for sure" and telling his mother he had swallowed some thunder after eating some corn. Now two months later, I was surprised that he has practically memorized the book (the first six pages completely - and there are a lot of words, many of them quite unusual, on those six pages. He often suggests we "tidy up the cottage". Mother Holly is a great help with learning good behavior and, even after all the excitement, he usually goes to sleep when the cat does.

5-0 out of 5 stars FELINE FANCIERS WILL LOVE THIS!
Cat lovers, rejoice! Here's another paean to our favorite feline pet. Schachner's illustrations are hysterical as cat gets into all the mischief anyone can imagine - from tangling in the thread of his mistress's spinning wheel to climbing into the cupboard and creating chaos among the crockery.

Never one to clean up his own messes, cat considers housework and pushing a broom "weary" work (we agree). Nonetheless, in Mother Holly's absence he spills the soup, and while trying to clean up turns the kitchen into a duck pond. He also releases feathers from a quilt, and makes a myriad of messes.

Nonetheless, Mother Holly dotes on her pet, just as we do on ours. Animal lovers have found a kindred soul. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Such Fun!
I LOVE this book! I read it a couple of times in stores and laughed every time. I picked it up because of the cute Golden Retriever on the cover. (I have a dog like that) But it was the hilarious story telling from a cat's point of view that really made me laugh. I finally gave in and bought my very own copy to read to My Big Dog.

4-0 out of 5 stars cute kids book
This book is very well illustrated and written. It is the story of a spoiled cat that runs away because its owners bring a new puppy in to the house...We read a lot of children's books, and while this may never become a classic; it is well priced and well presented, which is more than I can say for many of the childrens books we now own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cats, Cats and More Cats
This is a cleverly written, beautifully illustrated book about how a family got one cat -- that soon became a dozen cats. The small reader loves matching cats with their names and counting them.

Whimsical, imaginative and fun. Children who love cats will love the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every cat lover!
My oldest son and I fell in love with this cat story 2 years ago and now share it daily with his younger brother. They love the rhyme, count the cats, and repeat the phrases. It's timeless and ageless, since every cat-household knows that the felines adopt us - usually when we don't expect it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always delightful for our 3 year old!
After rechecking this book from the library 3 times in a row, we decided we had to buy it. Our 3 year old daughter LOVES this book, and asks for it every night. She can name every cat and the ending delights her each and every time we read it. Absolutely a charming book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A surprise favorite of my 3 year old
As always I was unsure of the response this would get from my three year old. After countless readings it has become one of his favorite books. He loves to laugh at the silly cats and consistently renames a couple of his favorites. It's just repetative enough to keep him coming back but always seems to be a surprise for him. I enjoy reading it to him often and find the nearly poetic text original enough to hold my interest. A great book, I would like to find more like it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful reading
Marco and Polo were the housecats of Mr. and Mrs. Neal. However, the Neals did not know the two cats could talk. After all, it did not sound like English to the humans. Marco could also read! The cats had been trained not to go outside but Marco escaped once for an hour. Due to that, and Marco reading about something called a "ranch", the two cats carefully planned their escape into the world. Neither knew all the hardships they would face, nor the wonderful adventures they would have.

*** A delightful tale that is perfect for a child's first chapter book. Great for ages 8 - 14. Here is one that will be read and reread many times, and never to be forgotten! ***

5-0 out of 5 stars The Grand Escape
I am an elementary school library media specialist and read this book aloud to children of all ages. We all love it! It is humorous and curious and the mystery always keeps the students' attention. You can't go wrong here. Anyone who has cats will be especially entertained. A real winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great funny book!
The Grand Escape is a great book and very funny. I am 9 years old and I live in Ohio. I got this book from Amazon. The day I got it, I started reading it. It was hilarious!

2-0 out of 5 stars For Younger Readers
I had to read this book for school and thought it was going to be pointless and cheezy . . . I was somewhat right! The book is about two house cats, Marco and Polo, who have a dream of going to a ranch. They run away from home and want to join the Club of Mysteries. To be able to join they have to figure out three great mysteries, like 'when it rains where does the rain go?' I think was one.

The Grand Escape is probably geared to younger readers like the 6-10 crowd. It was a cute story idea, kind of like the things you see in Disney movies, but I think that's what it should of been: a Disney movie. Probably an okay thing to read to your six year old sister but other than that, not something you would want to read on your own time.

I gave it two stars because of the fact that it was supposedly supposed to be for preteen readers -- I disagree -- and the fact that it seemed a little too happy and fluffy, again so much like a Disney movie.

Recomendations: Shiloh, it's by the same author and might be able to fit into the preteen catagory . . . then again maybe not. I didn't really like it but if you liked the Grand Escape you probably would like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read.
The Grand Escape is about two cats named Marco and Polo and how they get into the Club of Mysteries, a group of cats that solve mysteries, such as what controls masters and what makes the sun rise and set. The plot sucks you in and keeps you reading. It's funny and adventurous, and if you're a cat lover, you'll like it even more. There are other books in the series, too, The Healing of Texas Jake is the second one, and there's another one called Carlotta's Kittens. I hope there are more! I think cat lovers of all ages would enjoy this book. I'm an 8 year old girl (Mom's typing this for me!), but I think boys would enjoy it as much as girls. ... Read more
