5-0 out of 5 stars Lost Treasure of the Inca
I loved this book. It's wonderfully written and right away I was pulled into the adventure of searching for ancient Inca gold. People of every age will not only learn from this book but they'll enjoy every minute of it. It is an artful blend of history and all out adventure. My son loved this book as well; in fact it was something we could appreciate together and from this book we shared hours of conversation. We are recommending Lost Treasure of the Inca to everyone we know. My son particularly appreciated the addition of the treasure map and now he is plotting his own search for lost Inca treasure! This is the kind of book that inspires readers to think about doing something adventurous in their own lives -- it is one of those stories that stays with you after you've put the book down. Peter Lourie is a terrific writer with a gift for making the spirit of adventure come alive on the page. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Pix Boring Text
Easter Island is one of the most interesting places in the world, but you would never know it from this text that is so much like geography textbooks of old that you don't want to even turn the page. What does keep you turning the pages are the pictures which are quite beautiful and, in themselves, illuminating... A worthy effort, with solid information...

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!
An excellent informational book about Easter Island and its mysterious past. Schort chapters break the book into easily managable sections. The vocabulary is appropriate for the intended age group. Factual information is clearly separated from theories. When applicable, multiple theories are presented. Crisp, clear photographs throughout the book serve to clarify the narration. A glossary, complete with pronounciation guide, is included along with an index. ... Read more

Book Description

During the first millennium AD, one of the world's great civilizations appeared in the dense jungles of Mesoamerica. All over the Yucatan Peninsula, the Maya mastered sophisticated principles of mathematics, architecture, agriculture and astronomy and created scores of powerful city-states. At the center of this world was the largest city of them all -- Tikal.

Sprawling over twenty-five square miles, Tikal was situated in the heart of the Yucatan, near rivers that flowed to every corner of the Maya world. Tikal prospered from trade and military triumphs. Its rulers used its wealth to build a magnificent city of palaces, grand plazas and some of the largest stone pyramids seen in the Americas.

As with all great achievements of a civilization, Tikal is a window into the culture that created it. By telling the story of the city -- from its humble beginnings, through its bloody wars, to its "golden age" -- Tikal illuminates the Maya world in all its grandeur, glory and genius. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars story of remarkable life
I was very impressed by the life of Rigoberta Menchu. Her story is told with great depth of feeling but completely without sentimentality. There is background given on the Mayan culture which I found very interesting, that made her struggle so much more meaningful. This is really a great book for middle school ages to learn about current issues in Latin America, and about indigenous struggles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Afro Ecuadorians Emerge from the Shadows
"Y Su corazon escapo para convertirse en pajaro¨" is a moving, wonderfully written, important book about the history of the Afro Ecuadorians who live on the northwest coast and in the highland Chota Valley of Ecuador, an Andean country that lies between Colombia and Peru. Edna Itturalde has two purposes in writing. The first is to enchant children with exciting stories and persuade them that reading is a wonderful way to spend your time. The other is to give pride in their heritage to children (and adults) from Ecuador's downtrodden ethnic and cultural groups. This book is equal to Itturalde's other books: Verde fue mi Selva, JR Machete, and Caminantes del Sol. With reason the four books have become Ecuador's most popular children's books, selling more copies than Harry Potter and being used in many schools as required reading. These books are outstanding contributions to South American children's literature. ... Read more
