5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Chemistry Texts Out There
This past year I used this chemistry text in my first-year, general course. The book makes chemistry extremely easy to understand, and its organization is, to say the least, flawless. In addition, it is comprehensive; this trait makes it suitable for even the highest of general chemistry classes. 740 on the SAT II because of this book!

Problems have been reported in the Teacher's Guide for the 1997 Edition of this textbook. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Miracle of Modern Science!!
This book is a truly inspired work of genius, created by the fine minds of three nobel teachers, men who are experts on the smallest building blocks of our lives - the very atoms and molecules that define us and all that surrounds us. As a young girl, an earlier edition of this book revealed to me many secrets of the universe. Even now, I can't help but grin when remembering one particularly fine analogy, using cooking a pot of chili to explain the more difficult concepts of dimensional analysis. As an adult, I consult this outstanding text to clarify everyday questions about chemical reactions and other scientific information. Encourage that special child in your life. Give them the gift of knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR CHEMISTRY STARTERS
Those of you who cannot understand chemistry either because the teacher does not know how to teach or you really do not want to listen...THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. The book is a nice manual for those who cannot comprehend chemistry. It will be like your virtual teacher in print. My only complain about this book is that it is too long. But at least it is comprehensive. And what I like most in this book is it is divided into many sections which made it easier to digest. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good resource book
This book has tons of labs and demonstrations. Many of the labs and demonstrations can be found in other chemistry texts and on-line, this book brings them all together with good explainations and illustrations. Herr and Cunningham have included additional information for the teacher and there are thoughtful extension questions provided for the students. This is a good resource book. I allow my students to try the labs after school and when they come in on their free periods. My only gripe is that it sometimes takes careful reading to follow the procedures as they are written in paragraph form. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nature Lab is fun for children and adults
Nature Lab is a wonderful combination of hands-on science experiments and descriptions of how things happen. Providing the basic scientific tools like a magnifying glass, litmus paper, test tube, tweezers, a pop-up labtable (which becomes a veiwing platform for viewing the plastic slides alsoincluded) and a variety of additional tools and materials, the kit leadsone through a series of natural and chemical experiments to broaden thescientific knowledge of a young child and bring back that knowledge for anadult. From sprouting an avocado seed, to examining insects, to making arock disappear in a benign solution, each step is carefully explained andcolorfully illustrated. From the natural world we explored volcanoes andmade one. We sprouted seeds and made a flying "origami" seed toillustrate how plants release their seeds to the winds to propigatethemselves. And my granddaughter loved having all the small child-sizescientific tools and played with them by making up her own experiments. IfI have one disappointment in the Nature Lab, it is that, while it suppliesthe tools to conduct the experiments, many of the experiments requireproviding the essentials of the experiment such as baking soda, vinegar, seeds, and other things to complete the procedure. But once we read throughthe book and decided which experiments we wanted to perform, it was easyenough to gather the materials. We were not be able to do many of theexperiments right after opening, which somewhat dampened the excitement butwhich did not, in the long run, diminish the enjoyment and enthusiasm forthis product. It was a great way to introduce hands-on science to a nineyear old girl. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever owned
My parents bought me this book in hardcover about ten years ago, and it has been indispensible. It covers a broad enough base of information so well, and with enough depth, that it has been a constant and indispensible reference for me through GCSE science in the UK, high school chemistry in the US, and even sometimes during my undergrad chemistry and physics. The illustrations are wonderful, and the explainations lucid. I would definitely recommend this for anyone with a child in school, or anyone who wants to look at a bit of basic science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant.
About 15 years ago, as a 9 year old, I read the three books that make up this Dictionary of Science (the Biology, Physics and Chemistry ones). I was completely captivated by them, and read them over and over again. The science is pitched at exactly the right level for children: the colourful illustrations and short sections retain a child's attention. I went on to take biology, physics and chemistry A-levels at age 17, and went on to study Medicine at Cambridge University in England. Obviously there was more to this achievement than the Usborne books I read as a child, but I honestly do attribute much of my initial interest to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is excellant, great illustrations!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource
I purchased this book along with Kids Crazy Art Concoctions. Both provide awesome ways for kids to become engaged with learning. This is a very hands-on science book that inspires kids to get mixing, thinking, and learning all through science-based recipes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I Expected!
I expected this book was part of the popular Kid Concoctions book series and quickly found out is was not. My children were bored with the outdated projects that seemed to have been put together with little creative effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars way cool...
...[Everyone loves] thumbing thru the book finding something to do. usually have everything on hand at a moments notice. this book is looking well worn and for good reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
What I love best about this book is that I can usually pull together the items needed to do the experiments. My 4 year old loves to do experiments and I can let him browse the book for a picture that looks interesting and then we can do the experiment. I do not have to worry that I do not have the neccessary items. In fact, many times you can read the directions to your child and they can do the experiment alone. This is such a great book that I stumbled on while browsing Amazon. I highly recommend this book as a first look at science for your child. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, Easy, Fun, Cool, Amazing, & Creative!
This is an incredible book. The experiments are easy, fun, and cool to do. You and your child will be amazed at how easy these tricks and experiments really are to do. 5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect small guide to chemistry for a student or layman
There are at least 112 chemical elements, all of which but a few comprise the entire world as we know it. This book covers each element seperately, in order, from hydrogen to the various transuranium elemnts that only exist for mere seconds in laboratories. Each element's atomic weight, valence(s), and various uses are given. Also given is the human history of each element, including its discovery and the origin of its name.

I suspect that any reader, outside of a chemistry instructor, perhaps, will learn something from this endlessly fascinating, well- written and organized book. Many general principles of chemistry rub off as well, and for the student or interested layman, this is a highly useful, easily readable, and understandable book about chemistry. A true jewel, and I rate it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great informational book
I love chemistry and the elements, and this book didn't let me down. It is very interesting to ready and covers most areas about each of the compounds. It also lists the major uses and even some of the health problems associated with the elements. The pictures are also very good. The pictures represent the elements themselves or the uses of the elements. This helps a lot. There are only two small things I don't like about the book. First, it doesn't give much basic information. I would recommend "Exploring Chemical Elements and their Compounds" by David L. Heiserman. The two books together create a treasure trove of information. The other problem is just a small one. The author focues a lot on the uses in radioactive procedures. I guess that doesn't interest me too much. Otherwise this is a great book! I would suggest you get this book for personal use or even for schooling purposes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to the Elements
A Guide to the Elements by Albert Stwertka is an excellent source of information about the history, origin of name, and important/interesting uses of the elements up to atomic number 112. A chronology of the discovery of the elements and many contemporary as well as historical illustrations enhance the information in the text. Information about physical and chemical properties is not included. An excellent companion for the chemistry classroom is Exploring Chemical Elements and their Compounds by David L. Heiserman which has information about chemical and physical properties as well as abundance, allotropes, and isotopes. ... Read more
