The owner of the team and the company Chip works and plays for is Rockwells friend Mr.Armstrong. Chip gets a crush on Armstrongs daughter Peggy. ... But in baseball hes having trouble. ... They always say stuff to him about it, so one day he shows his stuff ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Chip has a love interest
Peggy Armstrong is about as close as Chip gets to being interested in girls in these early Chip Hilton books, but she is a match for him. Too bad he has to go back to Valley Falls at the end of the book. He could have been manager, star and gotten the girl, too. Good reading for all kids--girls included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in the series
I have read just about all of the 20+ volumes in the Hilton series and this has always been my favorite. In addition to being good sports stories, Chip always had to overcome some evil forces to triumph in the end. The evil is so strong in this story, that I want to punch the air in satisfaction when Chip wins out - no matter how many times I have read the book. If you are new to the series, however, I would suggest you start with the first story - "Touchdown Pass" - and go from there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good But Not the Original
This volume seems to be one of the favorites of Chip Hilton fans everywhere. The forces of evil mobilized against Chip are particularly bad and the final scene actually a bit violent (well, at least by the standards of fifty years ago). Read and see how far we, as a people, have fallen in half a century. Of course, better still, read the original. The current edition has been updated to satisfy the dogmas of feminism and the cliches of youth culture. Gosh, doesn't anyone get that it was those very forces which destroyed the world of Chip and Coach Rockwell and gave us America of 1999?!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good wholesome values. Excellent reading for young people
In his final year of high school Chip Hilton, All-State quarterback, is ready to lead his veteran Valley Falls High School team to a second straight championship. Tragedy strikes when coach Henry Rockwell is hospitalized and is fighting for his life. One of the towns leading citizens and the head of the school board conspire to oust the "Rock". They bring in an unscrupulous outsider and install him against Rockwell's recommendation. He quickly causes disharmony and chaos on the team. Hilton is suspended from the team several times. The way that Chip deals with adversity and fights back, makes great reading. It also teaches excellent values to young folks. A must read for Chip Hilton fans ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strike Three!
WILLIAM"CHIP"HILTON the high school sports all star has to try lto turn Nick Trullo's attitude around, let coach HENERY"ROCK"ROCKWELL deal with itor just stay away him while still traing Soapy Smith to be a catcher instead of a right fielder, and train himself to be a pitcher instead of a catcher with some tips from Del Bennett State baseball coach and friend of Coach Rockwell. From the beginning Chip, Soapy, Speed Morris, and Ted Williams were enimies sith Nick and Carl Carey. Chet Stewart the assistant coach ne at once that that Nick was trying to help Carl try to beat Chip out of the lead catcher job. During the games chip called the pitches and Nick didn't even shake them off he just pitched a different pitch. Chip, Taps Browning, Soapy and Speed all went to a Spring Festival at State where they went to see their future coaches. That's where he met Del Bennett and he asked him for some pitching lessons. He asked him not to tell the rock about it and because he wanted to tell him when he was ready. Chip built a strike zone on his fence but when he got his first chance with Soapy

5-0 out of 5 stars Chip still is a winner
Things don't change much in 50 years. This book still works with kids and adults. I like the new updates-just enough to make it contemporary. It would be a great gift for Little League friends and families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Chip Hilton Story!
Strike Three! offers great baseball action but, more importantly, it's a story about friendship, courage, and learning to extend our hands to others. Chip bridges the gap between the South and the West sides of Valley Falls with courage, faith, and friendship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Read the real ones!

5-0 out of 5 stars Freshman Quarterback (Chip Hilton) scores big in the 90's!
Chip Hilton scores big in Freshman Quarterback. Some of the problems he faces are as relevent today as they were in the original writings. The updates are great and still don't detract from the quality and message Clair Bee originally intended. 4-0 out of 5 stars Championship Ball Rocked My Court
Championship Ball was a great book! It is mainly about a boy, named Chip Hilton, who goes through his junior year with a broken leg. When he breaks his leg he can't play basketball so, he becomes the team manager. At first, he thinks he will have a terrible year but, later he finds out that he has learned more about basketball with his broken leg than he ever will. He learns about friendships and coaching more in this basketball season than his whole junior year put together. Chip coaches the team all the way to the championship. That's where Chip gets the winning ball. His team tells him about what a great manager he was. That's when Chip finally realizes that he had been the greatest manager ever.
In my opinion Championship Ball rocked my court! Chip Hilton has a great group of friends. His friends never do anything bad and never put anyone down. This book has great tone. The author puts in a great sense of joy throughout the whole book. There are only about a few places that I can point out were the author has used bad tone. This is a great book for boys who want to learn about basketball and yet, there is many great examples of doing what is right. So I say, get it and see what happens to my favorite manager, Chip Hilton.

5-0 out of 5 stars These updates are wonderful
There's a good blend of the past and present in this book. In comparing it to the original, I like the updates that have been done without offending us older readers. The spirit of teamwork is still relevant to any age. I still get misty-eyed at the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
The Chip Hilton series is a series of sports books. In the early books in the series a young man named Chip Hilton is in High School. Later in the series he is in college. Chip is an extremely bright young man who is also a star in baseball, basketball, and football. Chip is a leader on and off the court. These books teach children about morals and ethics.
In the previous book, called Tournament Crisis, State wins the Holiday Invitational Tournament. However, during the last few minutes of the championship game Chip hurts his knee.
This book, called Hardcourt Upset, begins where the last book left off. Chip is still injured from the tournament. He is sidelined for the first two games after the winter break. Because Chip is such a great athlete and mental leader and cant play, the team loses both these games.
Basketball however, is not his only problem. In Chip's college town of University, there have been several convenience store robberies. His best friend "Soapy" Smith is being accused of committing these crimes. Soapy is taken into custody of the police and detectives to see if the convenience store employees recognize him as the robber. Eventually Soapy gets a chance to explain that he is innocent because he was changing a tire at the time of the robberies. Chip decides to help find the people who helped Soapy change his tire.
At the next basketball game against Tech, Soapy recognizes the people who helped him. The Tech team players tell the detectives they were the ones who helped Soapy change the tire. Now the detectives must look further to find the robbers.
Chip and his pals from college agreed to watch the local convenience stores every night. One night when it was Chip's turn, he saw a man with two flat tires. When he asked the man if he needed help, he responded with a gasp as he heard some police sirens. Then he said in a deep nervous voice, "no, I'll just drive home with the two flats."
Chip thought this was very suspicious and jumped into the trunk of the car. When the driver parked the car in the garage, he jumped out and looked around. He saw a bag full of something he could not make out and got out of there. He called the detectives and they were there with Soapy in ten minutes.
When they rang the doorbell, an old man answered the door. Chip knew immediately that this wasn't the man had been driving the car. He asked, "Do you have a son?" "No, but there is a teenager who lives here." So they woke up the teenager and then asked him a few questions. After a few questions it was clear. This was the thief. He had a red wig and a mask in the garage. They also found all the money stolen from the stores.
Hardcourt Upset was an awesome book. It shows that if you think you can you will succeed in your goals. It also shows that even a small school can be a big school in some things.

5-0 out of 5 stars j's review
This book was awesome!!! It is a very good book if you like sports books. However, it does not only have to do with sports. It shows how much Chip Hilton cares about his friend Soapy Smith. I deafinitly reccoment this book!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hardcourt Upset
Tre explains almost exactly how I feel about this book. Except for one subject, when Tre says that you should worry about your problems I think that in this situation you should help your friend out first. Because the two of them had been best friends since youth.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tre's review
Hardcourt Upset is really good sports book. Although it is sometimes hard to keep up with, it is very interesting. It starts off a little slow but when the season starts it is really exciting. The book us a good for those who like sports. Reading this book does not take very long at all. Most of the words are in this book are not hard, and the book is not hard to understand. There are many characters in this in this story. These characters are very interesting and different in many ways, but they all got along well. In this book, the lessons taught are the most meaningful and priceless examples of what is right about life that I have ever read. One of the lessons is to take care of your probems before you worry about someone else's. Almost all of the games are close and exciting. Eventhough the team had many injuries and off court problems, they still well in games and in tournaments. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fiery Fullback Review
The book Fiery Fullback was about a kid, Chip Hilton, who turns a kid named Greg Hansen into a good football player. Chip Hilton is State's quarterback and State needs to win many games to make it to the Rose Bowl. They have a problem, though. State's best middle linebacker, Greg Hansen does not cooperate with the coaches and has no respect for other players. He has a poor attitude towards middle linebacker, because he wants to play another position. Greg Hansen wants to play running back for State. The spot was already taken by Fireball Finley, who was much quicker and much better of a running back than Greg. Greg wanted to play running back because his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather had played this position. His father had an injury in high school and it ruined the chances of him being a professional football player. Greg wanted to make his father proud. He tried to work it out with the coach, but Coach Ralston would rather have Fireball at that position. After hearing this news, Greg Hansen quit State football team. Chip Hilton tries to bring him back to the team, but he does not listen to Chip. He wanted to be a running back hero. After a while, Chip goes to Greg's house and convinces him to come back. Greg Hansen then realizes that middle linebacker can be a good position, too, after getting a couple of good hits. He decides to change his attitude and State beats their last match-up of the regular season. The book also has many other exciting parts to it; not only with Greg Hansen. The games were very enjoyable for me to read. This book was great because I like football, and I like to read about heroes. Chip Hilton was the hero in this book. He lead the State football team to win all of their regular season games.

5-0 out of 5 stars Original Manuscript is Great
Evidently the other person who wrote a review of this book read the paperback version. If you want the "classic" and unrevised Chip Hilton, you have to read the hardcover version. (Yes, they are two different things.) The hardcover version is the exact manuscript discovered in Clair Bee's personal effects after he died. Indeed, it is not quite as polished as the other books, in that there are a few minor continuity issues between this and some earlier titles, but this is a look at Clair Bee's last Chip Hilton story, before the final edits it never received. For any fan of the original, unrevised Chip Hilton series, this book is a must have. If you don't like all the revisions that have been made in the paperback versions of the stories, don't read them -- stick with the originals and the HC version of Fiery Fullback.

2-0 out of 5 stars New Chip Hilton book a disappointment
I've been a fan of the Chip Hilton books for year, and was happy to hear that a new one was coming out. The book was a disappointment, however, and does not measure up to the first 23.

There were a few problems with the book. First, they tried to bring Chip up to date, but didn't get all of the details right. They put in references to computers and big screen TVs, but the football games and in the book used the old rules and strategies from when the series was first written. (Besides, are we supposed to believe that Chip and his friends have been in college for 40 years?)

The second problem I had with this book is that it concentrated too much on the games and the off-the-field problems of one player. There was barely any mention of school, work, life in the dorm or any of the other parts of Chip's life that made the other books so interesting.

Finally, Chip was always an All-American kid, but in this book he sounds like a born-again Christian. It just kind of felt like the authors were cramming their religious beliefs down our throats.

The book was ok, but after reading the first 23 in the series it was disappointing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of action and adventure
One of the best books I have read in the past year has to be Fence Busters by Chip Hilton. It is a marvelous book about how Chip and his friends make it into the collage baseball team. One of the major reasons I enjoyed this book so much is that it is about baseball. It is a sport where different people play. Another reason I found the book to be so wonderful is that it was baseball because that is my favorite sport. The reason I picked out this book is because I used to play baseball for 8 years. Of course, my favorite reason for loving this book is it is a sports book. As you can see, Fence Busters By Chip Hilton was truly my favorite book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Story
This is good sports story with an interesting off the court plot. This whole series is full of good lessons for kids that older sports fans might find corny. I had some of the original Hilton books as a boy and simply loved them. I read them so many times that I, however, feel betrayed by some of the revisions that the authors chose to make when they re-released the books. The changes sometimes create confusion and may cause inconsistencies in later books in the series. For example, one player who is 6-5 in the original version, is 6-10 in this revised version. No big deal in this story, but a later book in the series deals with the team's lack of a big man. If you are a Hilton fanatic, I think you will see what I mean. Still, this is one of the better stories in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Chip Hilton Book!
What a great book! The Chip Hilton Sports Series is filled with good sports action and characters I can relate to. Soapy is really terrific in this book, and Chip Hilton is always somebody to look up to. I recommend this book and all the books in the Chip Hilton Series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like the Hardy Boys, but better
When I was younger I used to read the Hardy Boys books, which were great. Then my dad gave me some of his old Chip Hilton books from when he was young.
