Finally! A Practical Gift for the High School Graduate!
What to buy that high school graduate who is a Christian? If the answer is, "Buy him/her a book," until now the option had been limited to saccharin, shallow devotional guides. Excellent book!
I could have used a mentor like this when I was a young adult! I am a parent of a high schooler and highly recommend this book. David does an excellent job of preparing the reader for the temptations of "Sodom" found on many college campuses (and many high school campuses as well). He teaches the reader how avoid the temptations by establishing the habits of a godly lifestyle. Truly Fantastic
Clives Staples Lewis has created a mythical world which absolutely captures the human mind. The Chronicles of Narnia contain exciting plots, which all converge upon each other at the finally of the series: The Last Battle. Through out the books weaves the morals and beliefs of Christianity. These books do a wonder job of telling the story of the Bible, from the instantaneous creation of the world to the death of Aslan (Jesus). The way God cares about every one and desires us to enjoy life through Him, to the last battle and final days at the end of the world (of course Lewis did not know what was going to happen, yet it is still an interesting idea). In one of the best written books of all time, the land of Narnia comes alive with lovable and evil characters. The battle between good and evil is made abruptly apparent in this book as a small country goes through its history fighting for what is right. Light and darkness collide in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe as four kids explore the land which they will rule. For a time it appears as though the evil side emerges victorious; but it is found that the White Witch as not the ability to peer far enough back into the depths time. This book it one of the most important of the set, because contained in it is the most important message of all time. My father used to read the Chronicles of Narnia to me when I was younger, now I read them on my own. When he did this he stressed, Christianity is having the relationship with God, like the youths had with Aslan. I think these are very well written books and I would encourage any one to read. I uphold C.S. Lewis as a great writer of the centuries and I praise his books (all of them) as magnificant.

The best fantasy series ever!
If I could I would give The Chronicles of Narnia 500 stars. The story is fresh and fascinating. The world of Narnia is how our world should be with humans and animals and other fantstical creatures joing together for the greater good.

The series starts with "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe." Very accurate title because these are the important magical objects in this book. The shell of the story is set during WWII when the children of London are evacuated to the countryside in order to protect them from the air raids. Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are sent to a country manor where they discover a wardrobe that transports them to the Magical world of Narnia where it is always winter, never Christmas, and even time flows different. We meet Mr. Tumnus the fawn and a kindly beaver couple who help the children escape the dreaded White Witch. Finally there is the incredible Aslan, the lion ruler of Narnia.

With seven books in the series it is impossible to sum up them all here, but they are all worth reading. My recommendation is to buy the series and read it to your children (that way you don't have to feel guilty that you are enjoying the books as much as they are). Or just buy it for the magical feeling of being young and full of imagnination.

This boxed set is the BEST way to get this CLASSIC
Over the last century, C.S. Lewis' Narnia Chronicles have become among the most beloved works of children's literature ever published, and with good reason. The seven volumes of this series offer stories that are absolutely timeless, fairy tales mixing adventurous journeys, marvelous characters, mythical creatures, terrible evils, and moral lessons. That they are well told only helps them stand the test of time.

This boxed set is simply gorgeous, with attractive covers and nice layouts - plus you get the books individually, which is good for children who may not have the stamina to hold up that giant collected edition.

Each of the seven volumes can be read as an independent story, yet each are linked together by reoccurring themes and characters. Together the separate books form a unified whole, the grand and epic tale that is the Narnia Chronicles. Only "The Horse And His Boy" stands alone as a tale outside the core story arc, though there are cameos by core characters. Over the course of the six core volumes, the interwoven story of Narnia is told from that magical land's creation to its glorious end.

The books are not always of consistent quality, but a strong book always follows the weaker volumes. Such was the case when the Homeresque "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" followed the forgettable "Prince Caspian," for instance.

Of course, calling the seven-book series a single epic brings into mind a long-running debate. In what order should the books be read; chronologically or in published order? In truth, either order will work because the stories are strong enough to withstand any amount of juggling.

The Narnia Chronicles are classics because they offer rich and rewarding stories, glimpses of far off and magical lands, and present entertaining characters to the reader. They stand the test of time because they contain age-old moral lessons, are written in an eminently readable way that just begs to be read aloud, and are simple enough for kids while deep enough for adults. The cliché holds true here: the books are great for young and old alike.

No fan of young adult or juvenile literature should pass up on the Narnia Chronicles. Neither should any fan of fantasy, either. And probably nor should any reader at all, period. Recommended classics and near essential reading.

The second best fantasy series ever written...
...after Lord of the Rings, and easily the best children's series ever written. 'Nuff said!

CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER IS FOR ADULTS!!!
If you are new to this series, especially if you are going to read it to a child, DO NOT READ THEM IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER! A child will lose interest after a few chapters. Few great stories are told strictly in chronological order and the hook for Narnia is "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe".

Many of these other reviews done by people saying that they like reading these books in chronological order are adults who fell in love with the series years ago, and now see this new order as making better grown-up sense. Reading it this way for the first time will leave you with many details that shouldn't be discovered until after reading the first few books in the original order, and won't keep a child interested the way I and so many others were as kids.

So please, if you are an adult familiar and returning to this series, feel free to read it in any order you choose, (I certainly do) but if this is your first time, read it in the order below...cheers

Lions, Witches and Wardrobes--Oh My!
Because it is so spectacular, I'm choosing The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe to be the first book I review here at Amazon. I first fell in love with this story (and the subsequent volumes in the series) when my fifth-grade teacher read it to our class. Though it has been more than a decade since, this book has remained one of my all-time favorite works of literature, and I try to reread it once a year. It has an enchanting effect on the heart, mind and soul that never diminishes.

The novel features four British children: Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy (Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve) who discover a magical world hidden behind fur coats in a wardrobe. In "Narnia", they encounter an endless parade of fantastic characters and events that aid them in their quest to free the land of Narnia from the spell of the White Witch. She makes winter a permanent season and turns those who oppose her into stone. The most prominent Narnians are the talking animals, but especially the lion Aslan who, with the children's help, must return spring and benevolent rule to the land.

On a more analytical note, I find it fascinating how C.S. Lewis uses allegory to loosely bridge his fictional world with well-known themes and stories from the Bible. You can most easily recognize this in the ever-present battle between good and evil and the symbolic representation of Christ's Resurrection in the guise of Aslan's death and revival on the Stone Table. Which fulfills an "even deeper magic from before the dawn of time."

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a modern classic that should be included in EVERYONE'S library. It will leave you completely satisfied, but at the same time craving more (which can be found in the other six volumes of the Chronicles of Narnia series). Oh, to sit and rule at Cair Paravel while munching on Turkish Delight!

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
This book is about a girl named Lucy and her 3 siblings named Peter, Susan, and Edmund. They have to go live with a relative that they call the "Professor." On day they decide to play hide and go seek. Lucy runs to a closet and there she meets a kind faun named Mr. Tumnus in a really cold wintery place. Lucy returns to her brothers and sister and tries to convince them of what she saw. Lucy and her siblings have now entered the land of Narnia where the evil White Witch lives who dislikes children and it always trying to capture them. At the end of the book, there is a big battle between the witch's evil side and Aslan's (the lion) good side. Aslan's courage and loyalty to the children and people in Narnia brings Spring to their land.

This is the best fantasy I have ever read because it keeps the reader always involved. It is really hard to put this book down. Although this story seems complicated and hard to follow, it is fast moving and always keeps the reader in suspense. I loved reading this book and recommend it for both girls and boys. I know this one will be on your top ten list.

I want to go to Narnia
How can you not adore this? You know how food can be labeled "comfort food" - well this is the type of story that's a "comfort story". I felt so protected, secure and safe while reading this. It takes me back to a time in my life when I reguarly daydream adventures like those in Narnia. I think it reminds us of imagination, and freedom, and child-like wonder. Such a beautiful, wonderful story. Allow it to take you away and suspend your disbelief - you won't be sorry.

Hope
I chose to read this classic by C.S. Lewis because every one else I knew had read it when they were younger. I was told that it was an allegorical novel by a friend, which spiked my interest in what I considered just a child's fantasy. Lewis fills his world, Narnia, with a wonderful array of different and interesting characters. Fauns, Nymphs, Dryads, Naiads, and hospitable beavers all contribute to the fantastic nature of this story. Lewis must have been a creative man to imagine such wonders and write them down. A place where perpetually deadened by the cold of winter, with no Christmas and, therefore, no hope would be a terribly bleak setting. The depiction of Aslan as a symbol of Christ was quite interesting. Even the girls, Susan and Lucy, become similar to the two Marys in the gospel in their caretaking of the lion. So as not to give away the story to anyone else I will end saying this unique world provides more than just a fantasy escape. To both children and adults it provides a reminder that there is hope, even in our world, when it too seems cold and dead.

Have you ever imagined being sent away to someone's house, that has a secret that no one knows but you? The house in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe had a secret , which only Peter, Susan,Edmund, and Lucy knows. Once they went through the wardrobe in the house,their adventures would begin in the land called Narnia, and their lives will change.

I love this book, because it tells about Lucy trying to save her friend Tumnus. It tells about the wonderful adventures she had with her friends, Peter, Susan, and Edmund and the great dangers they faced in Narnia. I also liked the little rhymes that describes Aslan, the great lion.

I wish that this book would be longer and the adventures of Narnia would countinue in this book.

I recommend this book for people who like adventure stories, because this book is filled with adventures.

My favorite part is when the dwarf made Edmond a prisoner and used a whip to threaten him to go faster. If the White Witch ( a terrible witch) that calls herself queen of Narnia wants Edmond to go faster, the dwarf whips him until he goes faster.

My other favorite part is when Edmond got tricked into bringing Peter, Susan and Lucy to her because she wants to turn Edmond and his friends into stone. They are smart and she doesn't want them to break the White Witch's spell. The spell is a spell that will keep Narnia always in a winter season.

On the map, I think it is a little confusing because it doesn't show the place where Peter, Susan, Edmond, and Lucy came through the Wardrobe to Narnia, but the story is exciting. ... Read more

Wonderful
I am very pleased with this bible for my grand daughter. Even though it only recommends up to age 12and she is 14 .I think this is Bible is meant for teens as well. I was just looking it over and could hardly put it down.

Entices Kids to Read It
I bought this bible for my 10-year-old nephew, who doesn't like to read and is always put off by thick books with few pictures. Because this bible is geared for young people and also has a provocative title, my nephew is more likely to open it up, or at least sit with me while we read it together. I like the approach this bible takes in presenting scripture as an "adventure" and it seems to attract my nephew as well. And, not insignificantly, this version is priced right too. I bought him the paperback edition thinking that I will get him a nice leather-bound bible when he is older and more prepared to take care of a finely bound copy. All in all, a very good bible for a young person.

Exceptional Bible for children
I bought each of my children the Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV. My daughters read it every night. This bible is easy for kids to read and understand.

Great for family devotions
My 11 year old son has this Bible and we use it to do our family devotions. There are 'Lets Live It' sections that point out a specific Bible passage and then ask some questions to solidify our understanding and make the Bible relevent to our lives today.

Other attractive qualities include "did you know?",with definitions of difficult terms, "words to remember" and "Bible times" all geared to increase undrestanding of God's word. There are also brightly colored pages with the ten commandments, 12 disciples and other important information. There are also maps in the back.

Great REAL Bible
I bought this Bible for my son (6 y.o) and have been amazed at how well he can read it. Even though he is just learning to read, he is able to use the "rules" he know to figure out most of the words. What a GREAT book to use for someone who's learning to read! He loves it because it's not just stories, he's reading his Bible just like I do. I just wish I had gotten the hardcover.

A real Bible for kids
My 7 year old daughter wanted her own Bible, but not just a book of stories, she wanted the full text. With this Bible, she can read and understand the Bible on her own. She devours the daily devotionals, sometimes reading two or three in a day. Even though the text is easy to understand, there are still words she does not understand - The dictionary in the back provides simple definitions for words such as redeem, curse, etc. The subject index allows her to look up subjects she is interested in. If we are talking about how to be a good friend, we just look up friends in the index and read what God has to say.

I recommend this Bible to early readers who want the full text of the Bible without the difficult text of other versions.

NIrV Kids Devotional Bible
My grandson who is 7 years old has really taken to reading this Kids version of the Bible. According to my daughter, he loves reading every night before he goes to bed. He reads very well and the Bible stories are well geared to his age group. I appreciate the fact that at his young age he is so interested in reading God's Word and Jesus is becoming so real to him. Watch Out for New Edition With New Author & New Illustrator
Karen Henley's "The Beginner's Bible" is a classic popular children's bible for pre-schooler's and primary grades. Beware that the publisher has come out with a new book by the same title, but with all new text by a different author and all new illustrations. The new book IS NOT the same as nor of the same quality as Karen Henley's original. This is a disappointment, that a publisher such as Zondervan would market an entirely new work by the name of a best selling title. Far too confusing for someone unaware of the differences in the two books. Amazon furthers the confusion by featuring the original Karen Henley version in their Look Inside feature for the new book. This is inaccurate information. This is not a new edition of the same work, but an entirely new book with nothing in common but a title.

it was my first bible
I got this Bible when I was 2 years old. I loved looking at the pictures- and they are very bright and colorful. This Bible first gave me the idea that there was a book about God. When I was a little bit older, It told me that Bible stories were interesting, and not boring and glum like I thought it would be after I looked at my dad's Bible with a black cover. After all, you can't judge a book by it's cover! Now I am 10 years old, and although I have a full text NIV Bible, I still love to look at this bible. I actually have 2 copies of it, because when I was 4 I begged my Mom to get me another copy of this Bible. I am extremely fond of reading, and I still remember the day I read it all by myself, When I was 5. Wasn't I proud! It's very understandable and in clear, big, print. I still treasure it very much, and I absolutely recommend this Bible to you.

a great Bible for young and old
Our daughter received this bible for a baptism present. Because the stories require more of an attention span b/c of the length, we didn't read it to her very much until last year. This year, she will be turning 4 and she loves it! This is a bedtime reading staple in our household. We read at least 5-7 stories each night. It has given both my husband and I a better understanding of the Bible as well. The text is clear and the illustrations are vibrant and engaging. I truly would recommend this story to anyone interested in understanding the Bible a little more...it isn't just for young children!

Best early reading Bible I've found
This Bible is written in language that a five year old can understand, has a picture on every page (that's my biggest requirement), and describes more Bible stories than my other kid Bibles at this level, I suppose because it has the most number of pages.My child enjoys listening to me read a little of it every day.The characters all look the same, it seems, but that's a small complaint.Recommended. ... A Message of Hope and Peace for Our Youth
This book is one of hope and inspiration for all children of the world. It consists of passages taken directly from speeches given by Pope John Paul the II to children and youth groups around the world. The book is geared toward elementary school children of the Catholic faith, but the words will speak to any heart. Each page has a heading, such as "Peace," "Love," "Family," "Faith," and an excerpt from one of the Pope's speeches. There is also an accompanying photo of young children (often depicted with the Pope himself or in the midst of typical religious activities). This is a book that is meant to be read aloud to your child and shared together, as you talk about the meaning of the words within. I find "For the Children" to be especially apt today, in light of the unfortunate tragedies that have befallen our nation and world. One of my favorite passages states: "I say to you, with all the love I have for you,...do not listen to voices which speak the language of hatred, revenge, retaliation....Love life, respect life in yourself and others...do not think that courage and strength are proved by killing and destruction...true courage lies in working for peace." The book also talks about the unconditional love that God has for everyone, about hope for the future, and about praying for peace and harmony in our world. Pope John Paul II is a very wise man, one of the biggest peacemakers of our time. I have a lot of respect for him as a person.I would encourage any parent to buy this book to share with their family and share the message of love and peace found therein.

Words of wisdom for our younger ones
This book has excerts of Pope John Paul II's speeches which have been directed to Catholic children. These words of our Pope, however, have significance even to those over the age of 10. I highly recommend this book for First Communicants and for all other Catholic children, because had I had this book when I was younger, I would probably not have fallen into as many traps as I did.

A Wonderful Book!
As a second grade religion teacher, this book is one of the most inspiring gifts you can give to your child! It is an ideal gift for a First Comminion, or to children preparing for First Communion next year. It's also a great gift for anyone working with chilren preparing for the sacraments. While first and second graders will need some help with the bigger words, this is a book to be read and shared with your child. The Pope's words speak volumes for both children and adults. I also purchased a copy for the pastor at my church, who used portions of the book in his homily at my parish's First Communion Mass. My favorite section is the Pope's recollection of his own Holy Communion day.

This is a beautiful book. It contains photographs of children from all over the world with the Pope along with the text from his writings and speeches about children, including his letters to children. Very thoughtfully put together, easy to read. It makes a wonderful gift for children as well as adults who work or live with children - a wonderful reminder of what a precious gift children are in our lives!

This is a wonderful book for people of all ages. It is full of hope and wonder and teaches us all, as the author's farther did, "to seek a newer world".The protection of our animals, birds and overall environment is more important today then it was in St. Francis' time and his life story is told with wit and grace by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. As one who was an intern in Senator Kennedy's ill fated campaign for the presidency in 1968, I feel a special happiness that RFK's namesake is contributing so very much to make our country and world a much better place.

Is "evil" too strong a word?
Finally we have sunk to the bottom of barrel in a BIBLE-FOR-PROFIT industry! Here is a Bible that leads one to believe that the primary message of the Gospel is teenage girls in their adolescent self absorption. I have always been against Bibles that cater to a specific market, but this Bible manages to take an already bad concept to an all time low, with a glossy model cover and beauty tips for teenage girls. Inside one will find teenagers skimpily clad in bikinis. I was under the impression that the Bible served to correct the egocentricity and demonic consumerism of our times. I had no idea that we were to pretend this egocentricity were all the while about Almighty God!

It gets worse. If one goes to the Thomas Nelson website, one gets the official justification for this rubbish as being the fact that many teenage girls think that the ordinary Bible is just too "big and freaky looking." Perhaps the cross of our Lord is also too freaky looking? The truth is that most of these teenagers are a figment of the publisher's imagination. My experience as a Minister is that teens seek for the deep things in life, and that we should not believe profit driven companies who stereotype teenage girls as being shallow and self absorbed. Are we truly to believe that the only way to reach a teenage girl is to make the Gospel funky like her lipstick?

I have taken a personal decision with this publication, and that is no longer to support Thomas Nelson publishers, either by buying or reviewing their products. They have lost all credibility in my eyes with what can only be described as utter refuse, and they have prostituted their once good name with sheer devilish tripe.

The disturbing evolution of scipture
Though I am not a devout Christian, as many reviewers here are, I am very open to many concepts in the Bible, as well as encouraging of the intellectual study of the New and Old Testaments as vital historical documents.

However, Revolve strays so far from the "word of god" that it is almost sacreligious.

The biggest problem I have with this zine is the sidebars. Take out the "blab," the quizzeses, etc. and you have a New Testament marketable to teenagers. Many followers of Christianity are raised to read the New Testament with the disclaimer that it was written centuries ago and that not all rules necessarily apply to modern day. However, the writers and editors of revolve have taken the New Testament and applied it literally to modern day situations. This is a very dangerous enterprise, people.

For example: one "reader's question" discusses what one should do if they are being sexually abused by a parent or family member. Yet nearly one third of the moral dilemas presented in Revolve can be allegedly solved by simply submitting to what your parents tell you. How can this piece of literature in good conscience acknowledge the existence of abusive and destructive parents, and then turn around and preach the infalliability of thy mother and thy father.

At a time when teens need to learn to think for themselves and make their own decisions, revolve is teaching them that this ability is unecessary--and in some cases sacreligious.

This is an outrage--and I am one reader whose disgust has nothing to do with lack of faith in god

Revolve portrays young women as "second best"
Getting young people interested in religion seems to be getting more and more difficult daily. But "Revolve" goes about it in all the wrong ways. Encouraging young women to think it is OK to be subserivient to males may have been encouraged by our Puritan ancestors, but I think almost every woman, Christian or otherwise, would agree that the idea doesn't fly today.

Racist issues illustrated by this publication have also come to my attention, with sidebar "facts" declaring that African-American teens are 40% more likely to have had premarital sex than Caucasian teens. Nowhere are these "facts" credited or sourced.

If your family's ideals and values include women following their husbands instead of walking beside them, or a skewed idea that African-Americans, Hispanics, and any other minority is "less moral" than whites, or "unclean", then this could be the book to give your daughters, nieces, or granddaughters. However, if you would rather raise your daughter (or any other young female you may know) in a more equalized (and as far as I'm concerned, Christ was the most "equal" human being to ever walk the planet) environment, then I suggest you stay away from this book and maybe purchase her a copy of the timeless "Our Bodies, Ourselves", or maybe even a standard bible that isn't geared towards one demographic as a moneymaking scheme designed to pull teenage girls in with a pretty cover.

The best bible for teens EVER!!!
My parents made it a goal for me to read the whole new testiment of the bible. I tried, and couldn't stick to it for ANYTHING! But then i heard about "Revolve" and OMIGOSH! I know i'll have the new testiment read soon! this bible encourages me to read all the time! There are so many fun ideas, tips, and advice for living a Godly life! Christmas in Camelot was Great!
I thought Christmas in Camelot was great because it took place around Christmas time and I read the book around Christmas time. It was also the longest book I ever read in my life and my favorite book in my life (so far). It taught me about Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table and I thought it was really good.

Awesome Book!
Nightmare Academy was an overall awesome, thriller fiction book. I'd have to say the book was one of the most suspenseful books I've read. After the first few chapters, which start out slow compared to the rest of the book, I couldn't put it down. Nightmare Academy is about a family, the Springfields, who are put on a case to find out how a boy's memory was almost completely wiped out. The Springfield's twins, Elijah and Elisha, act like homeless kids and are taken in by a mysterious woman. They are asked to stay the night at her hotel, but when they wake up, they are in a completely different place where rules don't exist and all communication to the outside world is gone. Their parents have to find them before they are killed or turn out like the boy who almost lost his memory. I won't give away any more of the book, but I would recommend it to anyone.
I would suggest that the reader reads the first book in the series, Hangman's Curse, before they read Nightmare Academy so that you can get to know the characters and also read another good book. Frank Peretti, the author, does an amazing job at building mystery and suspense. He also described the characters so well that I felt like I really knew them by the end of the book. Additionally, the tension and excitement by the end of the book makes you feel like you have to keep on reading until the end.
In conclusion, Nightmare Academy is a very good book, except for the slow beginning, that I would recommend to any fiction lover. The plot is excellent and the characters have interesting personalities that anyone could enjoy.

A page-turner that pummels...
"Nightmare Academy" is book two in "The Veritas Project" series. Reading like a mix of the old TV show "Millennium" and the "Spy Kids" movies, but with a distinctly Christian worldview, The Veritas Project books follow the adventures of the Springfield family (Dad Nate, mom Sarah, and teen wondertwins, Elijah and Elisha) as they fight the bad guys with the help of the shadowy Veritas leader, Mr. Morgan, and the imprimatur of the President himself.

Summoned to aid a teen found in the middle of a rural road, his mind completely jumbled, the Springfields follow the boy's lead (during a rare lucid moment) to a youth center in Seattle. The center offers young runaways an unusual proposition, one which has potentially lethal consequences. The twins, posing as street kids in order to investigate for Veritas, are soon in the belly of the beast. After agreeing to the offer, they find themselves shuttled off to a mysterious school attempting to rewrite societal conventions, The Knight-Moore Academy.

Unaware of the exact location of the school, and unable to remember how they arrived, Elisha and Elijah are forced to match wits with many other kids and their eerie instructors. The school's staff - a generation and a couple continents removed from their kindred found in "The Manchurian Candidate" - attempt to rewire the students' thinking via clever verbal manipulations (and a few physical ones, as well.) Black becomes white and truth whatever one makes of it. While their parents search cross-country for them, the twins battle the brainwashing by holding true to God and His absolutes, becoming outsiders in the student body. Soon the social engineering wreaks "Lord of the Flies"-like consequences and what masquerades on the surface as a rarified prep school soon promises a learning experience no youth could ever imagine, even in their worst nightmares.

Frank Peretti's foray into youth fiction should please young readers looking for a thriller with solid, evangelical Christian values. A definite page-turner, "Nightmare Academy" has the needed creepiness balanced by biblical morality to give one the shivers without the guilt induced by reading something of questionable taste. The strong message that relativism is senseless and can only bring the downfall of our society, leaving us prey to nefarious forces, is reinforced on nearly every page.

Yet while this comprises the basic theme of the entire book, it comes off being heavy handed (though, sadly, not unlike many other books in this genre.) As Christian writers attempt to counter youth-oriented lit that fails to embrace traditional biblical values with sanitized, message-driven lit of their own, they've yet to really come up with books that drive truth home with more subtlety. C. S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia" is the archetype, but rarely has it been done better. Attempting to shoehorn concepts espoused in "The Left Behind " series into other writings also bedevils books like these. Rather than creating a unique vision, they merely look like copies of everything else. Even the best works are missing that magical quality that gives them life unto themselves. The result is, therefore, always mildly disappointing.

So while "Nightmare Academy" is a decent escape, its fire is nearly snuffed by the unfortunate hamhandedness of the presentation of its message. Discerning readers, even the young, will get the point immediately. We just need to have it presented more deftly - less sledgehammer, more skillful storytelling. Peretti is one of the foremost evangelical novelists out there, blessed with the chops to make it work. We should expect better.

Another nice read.
"Hangman's Curse" and "Nightmare Academy" are entertaining and easy reads. If you've been doing heavy research or reading this is a good switch. Light, and fun, I enjoyed it after a long study program I was in.. I read both books back to back so this review will be seen under both books.

I liked "The Visitation" better, but all three are worthy of your money..

Great, a amazingly good book........
Its a shame how few good christian teen writers there are. I read alot so I should have a clue what I am talking about. And I think that this is incredibly good. All they need to do is make a movie about it , like Hangmans Curse. If you think this book preaches. It doesn't. I grew up in the church and I know what I am talking about. I am a typical teen w/issues and found refuge in this book.
You know, i read everyone else's reviews and laughed. Obviously, they were written by parents. The truth is, the point of Nightmare Academy was that no matter what happens to you or what situation you are put in, God is stable ground. He will always stand firm and when you need him, he will be there for you. The book is written for teens, not adults. The message is clear and instead of looking at it from a political/professional view, look through your faith. I LOVE the way it intertwines action and killer ability to use technology. Think of it as a "fantasy epic" mixed with history.
First let me say that The Bible was easily the most challenging, thought provoking, and difficult book I have ever read by far. The length alone will drive most people away. Finishing this book for me was truly a test of character.

In a nutshell, the Bible is this: God creates man, man sins. It then proceeds through the history of God's people, the birth of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob, whose twelve sons would form the twelve tribes of Israel, the exodus of the enslaved out of Egypt. The rule of Judges and later the rule of kings, the division of the kingdom into two separate nations, Israel and Judah, the sin of God's people, the captivity by Babylon and Assyria. During the captivity, the prophets spoke of a messiah. The New Testament, and Jesus is proclaimed this messiah, and, along with his disciples, gives the plan for salvation of God's people as well as the Gentiles (non Jews). The Bible wraps up with the end of the world and the new heaven and earth.

Throughout the year or so where I read The Bible, I shifted between translations, Some NIV and some KJV. I have never been a religious person, in fact, I am pretty much an atheist, but I won't lie, I did ponder the existence of God while reading. If I got anything out of this, it is inspiration to be as charitable as I can be within my means. Jesus is the shining example of this.

The Bible, though written by many people over a long time, as a whole truly tells a fantastic story. It is simply the greatest story ever told, and has inspired billions.

Portable - the size of a paperback novel.
That's what I like best about this Bible. You can read it easily - it's not too big and heavy, the pages aren't too thin. Plus the cover is very cute and makes it look just like a regular book. NIV means it's been translated into easy-to-understand English. The Book of Revelation is especially easier to read than in other translations.

An excellent alternative
I do a lot of driving (4 hours/day) and these tapes help me stay in the Word. It doesn't replace reading the Bible, but when you spend so much time in a car every day it is the next best thing to reading the Word. I like the dramatization in the Gospels and the background music. Also the narrator is very easy on the ears. I would highly recommend this audio Bible for anyone who can't seem to get enough time to read the Good Book.

disheartened
I purchased this set of tapes because I desperately need to find God. I've been assured the search begins with his WORD. This production is an impediment to that search. The words are read without interpretation, sometimes so fast that it is obvious a task is being hurried through. The same characterless music is repeated ad nauseum. Compare this with Max McLean's performances and you will never want to listen to a "solely for profit" production like this one again. ... Read more

Great short resource for students
I give this four stars only because many of the days don't include anything beyond the scripture passage and a quote. The days that do, however, provide excellent devotional thoughts. Along with this, the entire framework of the Bible is covered in only minutes a day. What more can be expected of one book (outside of the Bible itself?).

The best way to use this resource is to study it in a group with the curriculum written by the author available at simplyyouthministry.com. Use this with your class and the impact will be much greater.

Great way to get to know God's Word...
I got this book when I started to deepen my faith and found it as a great way to learn the Bible. Every day, there is a story from the Bible that includes scriptures to look up that apply to the story and a fun thing such a verse to memorize or a profile on a person in the Bible. I have since passed it down to my sister and she reads it every day. A great book with great intentions.

1 minute Bible 4 students
I am in my early forties and just found a type of Bible that I really enjoy reading. It is not easy to read just one study a day since you want to continue reading. Would recommend to those who want to start reading the Bible.

Best devotional I have ever read
I am a middle schooler and I read it every day. my church friends read it every day and like it. This is a very good way to learn the bible in 1 year and be able to read it year after year. my youth paster gave this to me because he thinks its a good way to read the bible. this book only does the main points of the bible but at the bottem of each scripture it show verse that are realated to that scripture.

"Kid's" Bible? GREAT for young teens - NOT for preteens.
If you are looking for a Bible that is easy to understand (this is the New Living Translation which reads very much like the Living Bible) for a "kid," i.e., preteen, you might want to look for a different Bible than this. My wife and I both believe this would be a great first Bible for a young teen not raised in a godly home, but several of the themes in the "Sticky Situations" are a little to "sticky" for a preteen. (Our credentials for this assessment? A married daughter with 3 children, a 23 year old son, a 15 year old son, and 20 years of ministry combined with the academic ingredients, blah, blah blah!) :)

A few of the "Sticky Situations" from the approximately 50 that are found at various places in the "Kid's Bible" that make this Bible more suitable for a teen than a preteen...

Example #1: This one is placed in the Song of Solomon on page 730..."A few years ago, you weren't interested in the opposite sex. In fact, you didn't want anything to do with them. Lately, however, you've been changing and have even found yourself thinking about love and sex. The DJs on your favorite radio station talk about sex all the time..."

Example #2: On page 1012..."Lately, you've been having fun with some of the kids who live a few blocks away. You've spent some time with them after school and on the weekend. Recently, they have been talking about forming a club. The only problem is that there's an initiation..."

Example #3: On page 1221..."You are not allowed to see PG-13 movies. When you asked your parents if you could go to a movie tonight, they said OK because the movie is rated G. Your dad drops you and your friends off at the theater, and you all buy your tickets. But once inside, your friends walk past the G movie and head for one rated PG-13..."

The "Sticky Situations" vignettes are a helpful way to encourage the young reader to evaluate their heart in light of God's Word using real life situations, and for that it is very commendable, but not for a preteen.

Disapointed In Bible.
I recently purchased this bible for my 10 year old son. My husband and I both have life application bibles and love them. I'm sorry to say while there are some good attributes to this bible...overall I was disapointed. It is missing some key things: this is not a red letter bible therefore making it very difficult for a child to know when exactly Jesus is speaking, it's missing a dictonary & concordance in the back and most of all it's missing the one thing that's makes an application bible an application bible...it's missing ALL the explanations for verses etc at the bottom of the page!
