Book Description

You can’t be friends with God if the God you believe in doesn’t really exist.
You can’t depend on God if your God is a figment of your imagination.
In a world full of gods, how do you know Jesus is real?

You have probably heard things like:

  • All religions lead to the same God.
  • All faiths teach the same things.

It doesn’t matter what you believe—just that you believe sincerely. But Jesus said that:

  • He alone is the way to God.
  • He alone shows us the truth of who God is.
  • He alone gives us life close to God.

In this youth edition of Jesus Among Other Gods, Ravi Zacharias gives solid evidence as to why we should choose Jesus Christ as THE God among all other gods. Zacharias contrasts the truth of Jesus with the founders of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, providing strong descriptions of each faith and solid defenses for the cause of Christ. In addition to the religion comparisons, the book answers questions such as: "What about all the hypocrites at church?" "How scientific is science?" "How can you best share what you believe?" and "Does the Bible teach reincarnation?" You can never be too young to learn how to defend your faith . . . and this book will tell you exactly how to do just that!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid overview of the foundation of Jesus
Jesus is Someone who is referenced somehow by every religion in the world. From Hindus to Muslims and the cults based in America, there is no doubt that having Jesus as part of one's theology is vital. In this book Ravi Zacharias explains whether or not there is any valid claim to truth and Christ in any other religion but Christianity. Ravi has good stories to tell, writing like an expository preacher with clear, easy-to-understand points. His illustrations are vivid. I guess my only complaint is that he could have tackled the "absolute claims of the Christian message" via a more systematic breakdown with each particular religion. He was continually referring to the Buddhist, Hindu, and others (especially with pantheist ideas), but unless you had previous knowledge of these religions and what they taught, it would seem that the typical layperson would have had trouble keeping up. Still, while it does not get too deep, there is plenty of meat here, and I think the book is very much worth a read. Ravi is a clear evangelical voice in the wilderness, and I appreciate his logic and stand for truth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected, but still quite good.
I just finished this book, and I would have to say that for an intro level text to the Christian faith, Zacharias did an excellect job. I particularly appreciated his familiarization with both Christian authors (e.g., Kreeft, Lewis, Dostoevsky, and Chesterton) and secular authors (e.g., Sartre, Camus, Dawkins, and Hawking). By far, the stand-out chapter is number five, "Is God the Source of My Suffering?" I was truly surprised at how well he handled probably the hardest question for skeptics (and Christians)...the so-called "problem of evil." I was tempted to give this book 5 stars just for this chapter. Of course, if you're an undergrad or grad student in theology, you might want to check-out Richard Swinburne's Providence and the Problem of Evil for a fuller, scholarly treatment on theodicy.

My only problem with the book (and why I deducted a star) is that he doesn't really get into other religions. Once in a while, he'll bring-up, for instance, Buddha or Sri Ramakrishna (a Hindu "saint") while giving a much-too simplified version of the religious tradition (though it is a fairly accurate simplification). I happen to be a Religious Studies major, so I'm more apt to be picky on such things. Altogether, this is certainly not an adequate treatment in comparative religious studies. If that's what you are looking for, I'd look elsewhere.

His main focus is to show you the "uniqueness of Christianity" (a la C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity or G.K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy). In that respect, he does a good job; though, he's certainly not a Lewis or Chesterton.

For those interested in this book, I'd recommend checking out Peter Kreeft (a philosophy professor at Boston College). He's written numerous books (over fifty) dealing with Christianity. He writes for both the layman and the scholar (not an easy task) and does an excellent job. His website http://peterkreeft.com/ has several articles worth reading and audio files of some of his speeches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I was not let down by this incredible piece of writing. Not philosophical or even deeply theological, instead Zacharias gets to the point quickly: There is only One True God, and Jesus is not only equal to, but one and the same with this Deity. The compare/contrast to other religions' deified leaders was enlightening.

Someone mentioned that Zacharias did not explain in depth other religions, and that was dissapointing to them. However, that was not the purpose of this book. It is not an exposition of religious views and how Christianity compares. For that I would suggest reading "So What's the Difference?" by Fritz Ridenauer. This was instead a book about Jesus, as God, and how He compares and usurps all other gods and heads of other false religious systems. Remarkable and highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars Christian gives it the thumbs down...
If you're not a Christian, don't read it. If you are a Christian, strongly consider not reading it. I read it for a class and came away with nothing but a bad taste in my mouth.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wandering Truth
Jesus among other Gods - the absolute claims of the Christian message. The thesis of the book is to show the claims of Jesus are unique. To show Jesus claimed to be God and is God. The stated intention of the author is to compare Christianity to three major World views: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Statement of the claims is clear and argued thoroughly. Comparison is often brief; Often less then a page is given to comparing the other World views. The author does not deal with misconceptions these view points have about Christ nor those in Christendom. The book deals more with atheism then with the other three world views.

The author describes Buddhism as a nontheistic faith if not atheistic. Dr. Zacharias describes Hinduism as a religion with a multifaceted belief system which vehemently attacks the exclusivity of any religion. Jesus claimed that we can personally know God and the absolute nature of His truth. This agnostics would deny. Islam denies man's ability to "personally" know God. The agnostic denies man's ability to know God at all. the author begs his reader make a determination what world view has a monopoly of the truth.

The first question put to Jesus is where He lived? Jesus answered Nathaniel by saying come and see. The response to Nathaniel is a claim to a nonearthly home but of Heaven. It is a piece of the puzzle in Jesus claiming deity. The author calls this positioned by transcendence:

If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? (John 3:12 RSV)

Jesus point of Reality is Heaven. The Disciples and all mankind's point of reality is earth.

Jesus had no starting point, no beginning. His human birth explains this, the word became flesh. Conception without Consummation, born of a woman, but no seed of man. Jesus was not of this World but was born in it. Being of Heaven Jesus did not sin.

Second question: The Jews then said to him, "What sign have you to show us for doing this?" (John 2:18 RSV)

Answer Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." (John 2:19 RSV)

But he spoke of the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this;and they believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
(John 2:21-22 RSV)

The response is to those who do not want to know Jesus as the Messiah or as God. In this chapter is an argument against religious relativeness. it is not a matter what works for you, but what is the truth. The author titled this chapter the Anatomy of Faith Quest for Reason. Scripture does not demand blind Faith, but a well reasoned faith based on the truth. Faith is a confidence in the person Jesus and His power. Even when the power does not serve the believers end. Faith is based on who Jesus claimed to be and the Truth of His statements.

Question Three: Unless you drink my blood eat My body you will have no part of me? Jesus is the Bread of Life. No one can have eternal life without repenting and accepting Jesus as proprietion for one's sins. Proprietion came through Jesus dying on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. In this all believers are partakers of the body and blood of Jesus. The Lord's Supper is a reminder to the believer of this fact. I should think of my God being tortured, humiliated by sinners, treated as a sinner, and dying on the Cross. The bread and "wine" are not the actual substance of Christ, but I must acknowledge my need of them to be saved. I am damned without Him dying on the Cross. I am the source of my God suffering. The author spends to much time on saying the bread and wine are not the actual physical body and blood of Christ.

Question Four: Is God the source of my suffering? The author does not discuss much about man's implication in suffering. Pain came into the world because of Adam's sin. I deserve to suffer because I sin. It is through God's grace I do not suffer more. The author does point to the whole chapter John nine and the man blinded since birth. Which is good. He does compare other world views about suffering. The author argues many theorize that Man's subjectivity determines evil. In this course there is no objective definition of evil. The Christian believes God communicates to us what is evil through scripture. Evil is contrary to God's goodness. Dr. Zacharias argues the Christian view is the most thorough its arguments why man suffers.

Question Five: Pilate entered the praetorium again and called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" (John 18:33 RSV)

Jesus answered, "My kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from the world." Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice." (John 18:35b-37 RSV)

The Kingdom is establish through death and resurrection. God calls believers to proclaim the truth through ordinary speech.

Question Six: Where is the Gardener

The author discusses that the world was created by design and not by chance. That God is the ultimate Gardener. The designer of all creation. The earth and all the Universe do not exist through chance. God is sovergn. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I give this 100 stars from a parent's viewpoint.
Simply outstanding in format and layout. Your teen will read this. It's packed with straightforward, no-nonsense information. Even with its small size it is worth it weight in gold. This book could save your teen's life &/or their fertility. (The editorial error mentioned above is not in my copy.) If you or your teen get a chance to hear Pam Stenzel speak, don't miss it! She has web site if you want to learn more about her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Cost
In the course of my ministry to teenagers, I have read many books on sexual abstinence, God's design for sex, and the terrible consequences of sex outside of marriage. Some are great and others not. Some are candid while others seem afraid to approach the subject head on. Sex Has a Price Tag is a well-written and honest look at the biggest battle teenagers face.

Today's students grow up in world where more absolutes are not an accepted reality by many people. As such, any discussions about sexual morality that are based only upon the standard set by the Bible are automatically dismissed by a vast number of people, leaving them to buy into the "if it feels good to me it's ok" lie. In this book students will be confronted with the unambiguous, unequivocal standards of sexual purity found in the Bible, but at the same time the author seeks to reach out to an audience who wants to ignore those truths. The costs of sexual activity before marriage and the reasons it should be avoided are broken into three categories: 1) your beliefs (what you choose to accept about God's design), 2) the wise counsel of others (what other students who did not choose abstinence say), and 3) medical facts (statistical evidence about STD's, teen pregnancy, and the "safe sex" deception. Simply telling students to abstain because of the medical reasons and advice from other people is only telling them half of the story. We shouldn't be surprised the personal experiences of others and medical evidence support the same perspective found in the Bible. An open look at the empirical evidence leaves you at the same standard set by the moral absolute. By combining what they won't refute (medical facts and the relative opinions of others) with what they want to discount (God's Word), the author successfully invites students into the discussion and gives them the opportunity to find the real power to overcome these struggles: God's power.

You or your teenager may have no desire to know or serve God. This book won't make you a Christian. But Christians and non-Christians alike will benefit from the practical and understandable discussions and illustrations in this book. In the final sections you'll find some great common sense advice and some relevant truths from Scripture to help in this battle. Please, let this book help you count the cost of sex before marriage so that you can make a wise decision and not pay a terrible price.

There is a glaring editorial error at the very beginning of the book. In the introduction, two-and-a-half paragraphs from page seven are repeated on page eight. Don't worry...the rest of the book is fine...go ahead and finish it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars engaging young adult Christian novel
The female teenage Christian rock band Redemption has begun climbing the ladder of success and even becoming recognized in malls while on tour. However, the trio of high school students, Chloe Miller, Allie Curtis, and Laura Mitchell has other concerns besides the music though they each trust in the Lord to guide them. Allie and Laura wonder about what to wear at the prom while Chloe knows that she really likes twenty-one years old Jeremy Baxter of the Iron Cross band.

A fellow student back Harrison High sends emails to Chloe asking for help in finding her way to God. However, Chloe has a difficult time turning the other cheek as Tiffany Knight beat her up a couple of years ago. Will Chloe, who refuses to open the emails, forgive and assist Tiffany on the path as the singer knows God expects of her or will she continue to believe that Tiffany could never find the Lord?

This is an engaging young adult Christian novel that follows the trials, tribulations, and beliefs of three young ladies on tour. The story line is predominately told by Chloe, but fans get a deep look at all three teens plus their retinue and the members of Iron Cross. FACE THE MUSIC is a warm tale that brings to life the importance that anyone can be saved if people take a chance on risking rejection by their peers but acceptance by the Lord.

i personally thought that the book was very interesting as i really touched me. i was not as lucky as chloe though. the person who died that was my friend was not a christian. i was not really consumed with guilt though i felt a twinge of it. Anyway, enough of me. jeremy and chloe's relationship gets interesting and i really hope to see what will happen in the next diary of a teenage girl-Kim. it is a really good book as chloe matures and you'll see a different side of her as she becomes more feminine. ireally loved it and enjoyed it and finished it in 2 hours and have since reread it loads of times. 5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars plus!
Are you looking for a book that will present the solid facts on dinosaurs on a level anyone can understand? Look no further! Adults and children alike love this book. It's a book that will be used again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful dinosaur book for children!
We really enjoyed this book about dinosaurs from the creationistic point of view. It gives credible answers to all the questions children have about how dinosaurs fit in from a biblical viewpoint. Even as an adult reading this book I had many of the secular evolutionary ideas I grew up on challenged. It will enhance your faith in God to realize that there are credible creationistic theories in response to secular evolution!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about dinosaurs!
This is a great book for kids and adults alike who would like to learn more about dinosaurs. Though I would think that it would be better for young children. Adults who would like to learn the truth about dinosaurs should see The Great Dinosaur Mystery Solved! by Ken Ham. All in all a great book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Just Plain Awful
There is nothing more annoying than people who obfuscate the truth in the name of God. Gish's book is the same old, same old in terms of the usual outdated creationist silliness about dinosaurs and Noah's flood, but what I find especially funny is that Gish can't even get the skeletal reconstructions right. Many modern finds have allowed the work of 19th century collectors to be refined, but Gish doesn't even bother to take note of any paleontological work done in even the 20th century in showing the kids what the complete skeletons look like! For example, his Stegosaurus is copied right out of works now over 100 years old and completely omits major elements of their anatomy known for at least the last 75 years! Such things aren't a political or religious question -- they are simply a matter of showing kids what has been found. The fact that Gish would be so incredibly sloppy so often makes it all the more obvious that he has no interest in presenting kids with facts, but instead is just using pretty pictures of dinosaurs to send religious propaganda. Don't kids at least deserve to be shown the real evidence? Instead of wasting money on this drivel, look for kids books on dinosaurs by such publishers as National Geographic that keep up with the REAL science and present it in an understandable format for kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ignorance is Bliss
Well, if you want your children growing up ignorant, this book is for you. The book tries to push itself off as a children's book, but it is really a subtle attempt to push off the most narrow-minded kind of creationist thinking on children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
Well, other than the fact that I would wake up early every saturday mornings to listen on the internet, it teaches a very important lesson. I'll start at the begining:

1. The main idea is to put your faith in religion, rather than science, but it doens't just teach in one episode, but takes it to the extreme and shows that when all hope seems lost, pray, and trust everything in god.

2. The storyline is terrific! I won't spoil any surprises, but I will tell you this:

-Novacom releases this "Novabox" thats supposed to heal you.
-Someone is trying to steal the Imagination Station!
-Oh no! Murders?
-Some students figure out the secret of the Novabox & go to the utter extreme to try to destroy it.
-Bill Riely's wife is back because of the Novabox?!?!
-Did Bill Riely really blow up the tower!?
-Many EXTREME surprises

Well, if you are a fan of Adventures in Odyssey, and radio dramas, then I suggest that you go out and buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hang on for the Climax
Novacom is growing stronger. In spite of all Whit and the gang have done, they seem to be gaining support. And it's not exactly like they're doing anything wrong. Or is it? Slowly, the kids begin to uncover some things that just aren't right. But will Whit, Jason, Connie, Tom, and the others figure things out in time?

Every one of these 12 episodes contributes to the Novacom story is some form or other. The writers have done a good job of building this story. But, if you think you know where this story is going, don't bet on it. There are several surprises in the story line here and everything ties together perfectly for the ending. I was glued to my seat waiting to reach that climax, too. They also do a good job here of tying in elements from their many years on the air. I loved some of the references to episodes from their first couple of seasons.

Fans waiting to see how the Novacom storyline resolves itself will be thrilled with the outcome. If you've missed the last couple of collections, you'll want to go back and hear them before you listen to this one so everything makes sense. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars i'm giving this away
i've been a christian all my life and was looking for something written by a lay christian woman to help me enrich my spirituality. this is why i bought this book. but it was a disastrous purchase. i agree with an earlier review: this book is shallow. almost everything is based on stormie's personal experience, her own interpretations of scripture, and plentiful quotes from the bible--but without context. but she obviously does not have yet a thorough and well-contemplated understanding of the bible and other christian concepts. maybe another reason i didn't like this book is because i'm catholic, and stormie isn't. so i was mentally arguing with her while reading the book. those who are new to christianity and looking towards religion for a "quick fix" in their life would probably get more from this book. the lord did answer my prayer and i found a copy of "full of grace" by johnette benkovich. that is a richer more in-depth guide for lay women looking for the path to holiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have, can read over and over!
This book, wow! I enjoy knowing her life and her past to know that she has come so far, it gives me hope, more hope in God and His Will for my life. I can read this book several times and will read it several times. It gives depth and new purpose in prayer. I got so excited I would read more than one chapter at a time.

I really enjoyed the chapter on Praying to Know the Power of Prayer. This chapter explains why we should pray and the relationship we have with our Creator when we do pray.

Another chapter I really was engrossed in (which the whole book drew me in) was Praying to Forgive Yourself, God, and Others. I think this is an area that hinders many Christians, especially me, although before this chapter I would have not known I had issues of dealing with the past issues that I had not forgiven people for.

I would highly reccomend this book! I cannot seem to express the depth it has brought to my Prayer Life and Walk with the Almighty.

God Bless!

2-0 out of 5 stars Shallow
This book in completely based on the author's own experiences and lacks depth. She gives many examples of her own life and how praying one simple prayer changed everything. For example she prayed for a husband, and poof in a few months she got one, etc. Life doesn't work that way. We can pray for soemthing for years and not get it. She presents prayer as having fast results. She "promises" if you pray her prayers for 20 days you will see drastic results. Give me a break. God works out things in our life as a process and he gives us a lifetime to do it in. This type of teaching can be very disappointing for new beleivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Change Your Life!
I'm an avid reader, but it's rare that I read a book and then go out and buy copies of it for family and friends. Yet that's just what I did with this book, because it is life changing.

The author's advice is "right on" and perfectly Biblical, and I promise that if you follow her suggestions, you can't help but have a happier life and a better relationship with God. Your marriage and other relationships will benefit, too.

I can't recommend this book enough. EVERY Christian should read it. And then read it again...and again...And if you're not a Christian, but are seeking more fulfillment out of life, this book is an excellent beginning! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to teach young ones about God's truths!
If you want a book that'll teach your little ones about God's truths, this is it! It's definitely a good book for night time devotionals or any time of the day. I would definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Sunday School
I used this book as the curriculum for a new Worship Skills/Catechism class we implemented last year at our church. The kids (grades 1-5) absolutely loved it! You would have thought they knew personally the kids in the book. It provided an avenue for our kids to discuss similar situations they had encountered in their own lives. And some of the theological discussions the catechism questions sparked were absolutely amazing. Whether you're looking for a family devotional or a basis for a church class, this is a great resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Catechisms continue to be wonderful teaching tools, even if they have fallen out of use lately. Susan Hunt has given us a real treasure. This book really makes some solid teaching fun and engaging for the kids. I love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my children's favorites!
These authors have done a great job of taking the truths from the Children's catechism and relating them in understandable stories that my children really relate to. It focuses on the God revealed in the Bible and helps children to understand who He is and how He relates to them personally. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Every December, an envelope from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien's children. Inside would be a letter in strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful color drawing. The letters told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how all the reindeer scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas's house; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with a troublesome horde of goblins. Sometimes the Polar Bear would scrawl a note, adding yet more humor to the stories. No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by the inventiveness of Tolkien's Father Christmas Letters. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Charming Christmas letters
J.R.R. Tolkien was best known for his studies in philology (study of language) and epic fantasy novels. But Tolkien was also the proud dad of four kids -- and he didn't just read "Hobbit" to them at bedtime. He also, over the course of several years, wrote and illustrated whimsical letters from Father Christmas at the North Pole, here compiled into an unusually charming book.

In these letters, Father Christmas kept the Tolkien children updated with stories about the caves at the North Pole, the goblins, the gnomes, the elves, underground fights and firework explosions, cave drawings, and the goofy slapstick antics of the North Polar bear. (When Father Christmas couldn't write, his Elvish secretary filled in)

"Father Christmas's" letters are really, genuinely sweet. Maybe it's because they were being given to real kids that they didn't end up cloying or cutesy. And of course, Tolkien's detailed, colorful, fantastical, intricate pictures are what make the letters come alive; you can imagine the Tolkien kids eagerly examining the pictures as well as the written words.

Tolkien also sprinkles the stories with things that his kids were probably intrigued by, like prehistoric cave paintings, fireworks, and a comic bear who causes all kinds of mayhem. And fans of Tolkien's fantasy works will probably enjoy checking out things like the invented Elf language (as written by the secretary Ilbereth) and goblin language.

"Letters From Father Christmas" won't exactly make you believe in Santa Claus again, but it is one of the prettiest and most charming Christmas picture books out there. Definitely recommended -- and not just for Tolkien fans too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make Reading This to Your Kids a Christmas Tradition
Letters from Father Christmas, complete with interjections by an elf and the clumsy but valiant Great Polar Bear, is simply the best Christmas book I've read in several Christmas seasons.

The best parts of the letters are the Great Polar Bear's escapades. The clumsy oaf is simply a thorn in Father Christmas' side, but always helpful. And valiant! See how the Great Polar Bear, stomped and crushed those nasty Goblins who steal all the toys for the shipment to Britain.

This book made me wish that I could write Christmas replies to my kids like Tolkein. What love to take the time to leave such a wonderful legacy to his children, and subsequently, to us!

I can't see any reader being disappointed with this book. It is simply charming and will really please the big kid in your house (you) and the little ones too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone can enjoy this together
very sweetly done, he obviously tried very hard to get into the characters he was portraying, even down to changing the handwriting. Even my grandmother really enjoyed this book, so age is not a limitation. It was the one time in a long time we've sat down and read together since I was a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas book
I wish I had seen this book earlier when my children still believed. I would have loved to do the same and send Christmas notes back to them! These notes however are incredibly creative and I would have had a hard time living up to the quality of Tolkien's writing.

This book is a top Christmas book in my household. It and "Polar Express" are a favorite read after we open up the x-mas box and put up the tree.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great children's stories. Make sure to buy the new edition!
It is not surprising the creator of Middle Earth, and the father of the fantasy genre, would create such an elaborate, creative collection of Christmas stories for his children. This book is a nice addition to my library, as it contains the text of the letters, as well as Tolkien's hand-drawn illustrations and North Pole post markings.

While this book does not relate to his Middle Earth universe, it is easy to recognize the origin of some of its characters. The goblin attack on Santa's cellar presages the Goblin-Elf wars in Lord of the Rings. Santa's elf-secretary Ilbereth is the obvious progenitor of the ancient elf-queen Elbereth. We even get a glimpse of elvish writing and the goblin alphabet!

If you have the chance, buy the new revised version of this book. I have the 1991 reissue edition. It is only 48 pages long, and omits the letters from 1920 - 1924 and from 1939-1942 . The new edition is one hundred pages longer and contains previously unpublished material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best All Around Collection in a Long Time
Ok, I confess. I've been listening to Adventures in Odyssey since its very first broadcast. I was in the target age range at the time, but I still love the show.

With the Novacom story behind them, the show serves up fun and funny shows focusing mostly on the kids and families around town.

"For the Fun of it" opens the album and finds Wooton playing host to his overly mature and well bred niece, with surprising results.

"Room Enough for Two" brings a surprise to Liz and her family when brother Mark shows up for a trip home from the Army with his fiancee.

"BTV: Behind the Scenes" finds disorder and disharmony on the set of the latest BTV episode, ironically enough about unity.

"Bassett Hounds" takes Wooton and Bernard to Alaska and a Bassett family reunion as Wooton's Grandpa plans to pass out his wealth.

"It's All About Me" features dual plots. In the first, Connie is upset when Mitch gets the credit for the advice she is feeding him on his new KYDS radio show. Meanwhile, Jared DeWhite is upset when his brother gets credit for his joke on Rodney Rathbone.

When Liz and her family disappear, it's up to Mandy, Jared, and a few new friends to solve "The Case of the Disappearing Hortons." (Have I mentioned it's wonderful to have Jared back in Odyssey?)

In "The Defining Moment," Marvin must deal with his sports abilities, or lack there of.

A free vacation sounds wonderful to the Washington family, until they get embroiled in the "Mystery at Tin Flat."

Aubrey takes a lesson in sharing her faith from Seth in "All Things to All People." But is this really the best method of evangelism?

Finally, the three part "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow?" finds Mitch tracking down the person who stole Whit's identity and framed Mitch for it. Meanwhile, he finally has to make a decision about joining the FBI. What will he do and what will it mean for his relationship with Connie?

With some drama and comedy mixed in, there's something for everyone here. There were even a few episodes where they surprised me with the ending. Any fan of Odyssey will love this collection of great radio drama. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Savored Slowly
Ok, I repent. I have never read a Max Lucado book before. Just about everyone I know has, but I found excuse after excuse to avoid reading them. In do not know why. Maybe I figured that I had more important, or more entertaining reading to do. But the truth be told, I have never been a big fan of devotional books. But then I received this book as a birthday present from two dear friends in my church and what a blessing it has been.

Lucado is a master of the English language. You will not find more beautiful prose written anywhere. It is simply beautiful. Lucado takes a look at the life of Christ as if Christ is your neighbor next door. Thus, the book has a contemporary feeling. We are not reading about something that happened in ancient times, but we are learning how the living Christ is working in the world around us. Not only is this a well-written book, it is an insightful book as well. The author has a way of looking at well know verses in a fresh new way. And yes, he even gave me insight to Scripture that I had overlooked. Written in short chapters, it lends itself to being read devotionally- one chapter per day. You cannot rush Lacado. It is not a quick read. It is too insightful, to beautiful to speed-read. This is one good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jesus, the guy next door
This book has brought the Gospels to life for me. Max Lucado puts a "down home" spin on familiar stories from the life of Jesus that reveal his closeness to humanity. Yes, he is our Savior. Yes, he never sinned. However, that does not mean that he is distant. That does not mean that he fails to understand our struggles, fears and pain.

Next Door Savior is a collection of 21 powerful essays that remind us that there is no person that Jesus won't touch (Part 1), and there is no place that Jesus won't go (Part 2) as our Savior. Lucado's stories will leave you laughing, crying and marvelling at the wonderful sacrifice Jesus has made for us.

Next Door Savior will help you grow from knowing *of* Jesus, to really knowing Him on a personal level, and being certain of His presence in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jesus is not far away
Have you ever been lonely? Felt abandoned? Felt betrayed? Felt pain that you feel that only you have gone through? Been depressed? Need some reassurance? READ THIS BOOK. This is the the first book that I have read by Max Lucado, and it certainly will not be the last! Max writes in a way that I have never seen before in religious books- he describes biblical stories in modern day situations so that it is easier to understand the situation. His way of writing makes it easy for you to understand what is going on in the scriptures, and his writing comforts you. Jesus is not a god-man or half man and half God- he is fully man and fully God. Jesus has felt every feeling that you have felt- anxiety, mourning for the death of a loved one, happiness, sadness, depression, abandonment, betrayal... He understands everything that you go through. He is always there for you even though you may not think he is. He is near enough to touch! You can trust him! I highly recommend this book because it is so awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book I Can't Finish
I have been reading this book for a while, but I cannot finish it because I keep starting over from the beginning. Every chapter makes me feel great about God's love for us. It is my first Max Lucado book, but not my last. I recommend for everyone especially new Christians it brings Jesus to our neighborhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reading

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Concept - Falls Short
We have been using this book for about a month with our 7 & 9 year old. While the concept is great (short story presenting a problem then kids pick from 3 multi-choices after reading a scripture), I often find it frustrating for a couple reasons.

First the 3 choices are often 2 ridiculously obvious non-choices followed by the third obvious answer. Second the scriptures used are often either irrelevant or such a stretch fit to the situation presented as to be irrelevant.

It seems to me that the author had a great idea but got caught mass producing 365 situations. Hate to be a party-pooper, and happy that the book fits for some, but 'forewarned' for others who may find it like me. Strongly suggest a pre-read prior to purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sricky Situations: 365 devotions for kids
One of the best devotions we ever purchased. It keeps the interest,is short and has real life situations. Book presents good choices to help make decisions in the real world. Just loved it. Good for 7-8 year old son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I would actually give this book a 4.45-very good & helps to bring the bible to real life by using it & applying it to realistic situations. A great way to get the family to talk about all types of issues that may come up in life
