5-0 out of 5 stars The Word, in a super cool, super portable edition
This the cleverest design for a teenager's Bible I've ever seen. It comes in 3 terrific colors: Silver with the semblance of a flip-top can embossing and "Thirsty ?" written on it, a neon apple green with a name tag embossing and "Identified", and a wonderful bright orange with a "One-Way" arrow.
It has a magnetic flap, and the back and front covers are hinged; the entire package looks very sturdy and is quite light.
As expected in such a slimline format, the font size is small, though I've seen worse in Bibles of this proportion, and if you have good vision (or good spectacles) there shouldn't be a problem; after all, this is a travel Bible, not a study version.
Other details to this Bible are: It does not have the words of Jesus in red, and the only "extras" are three handy lists in the back of the volume: "Great Topics in the Bible", "Great Stories in the Bible", and "Great Verses in the Bible".

This "Metal Bible" should not be limited to teens either; it would be a worthy investment for any adult who works with or teaches young people, or one that just wants a nifty stylish Bible for their briefcase or purse. The Word: Take it with you wherever you go, and look cool doing it !

The New Living Translation is ideal for young people, as it reads in the same plain and simple language that would be used in a novel. This makes an excellent introduction to scripture, and one that will bring the Bible to life in words that are easy to understand.
Mark 10:14
New Living Translation: "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them ! For the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these".
King James Version: "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God"
New King James Version: "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God".

5-0 out of 5 stars Youth Leader? This is a great purchase!
I work with teens. The Bible I've been using is sooooo beat up from being shoved in a backpack on the way to camp, to work, to Bible studies, or to a Young Life club. I just bought this(in the orange "one way" version)and plan on taking it with me everywhere! It's small (mentioned by another reader), but very "readable". I'm excited because this Bible should survive getting "attacked" from the random pens floating around in my purse/backpack. It's light enough I can take it anywhere! I plan on taking it to the mall to get it engraved w/ my name! Woo hoo! I can't wait to use this Bible to do a club talk at Young Life.....

Take care all! Happy reading! Fight the good fight!

God bless!

5-0 out of 5 stars God's Word -- Totally Hip and Sleek
Who thought of this idea? (Not the Bible -- but the metal binding it is in.) The binding is just an awesome addition to an all ready wonderful translation. The New Living Translation is very readable and easily understandable. And now I see there are four different designs of the metal Bible to choose from. This is a great gift for anyone who is ready for an exciting Bible adventure.

4-0 out of 5 stars My teenager loves it
I bought this Bible for my teenager at the end of the school year. When I first saw this Bible I thought my daughter was'nt going to like because of the small print. But she thought it looked cool and with the metal case it did'nt look like any other Bible she had seen before. The first time she took it to her youth group it was a hit, everyone wanted to know where she got it. Now she reads it more than any other Bible she's owned, it's very easy to under stand. With the help of one of those credit card looking plastic magnifing glasses she has no problem studying her lessons. It's price is just about right and I don't have to buy a cover for it and it's very tough (she droped it a few times and it can take the punishment she gives it, only had to bend it back in shape one time, very easy). I only wish that they made them bigger, thats why I only give it 4 stars, because it is difficult for me to read without a magnifing glass but every teen and young adult that we know likes it.

4-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!
I had a hard time giving this book only 4 stars, but I wish it had a version that came with apocryphal texts.

This version is meant to target teens, which I am not. However I just love it. The metal slips easily in and out of my purse. No zipper to wear out, no leather to scuff. Another reader mentions the tiny print. It IS small, but very clear. Some of us older "teens" may need reading glasses. Thankfully I'm not yet there... ... Read more

Book Description

Long hailed as the grand master of adventure fiction, Clive Cussler has continued to astound with the intricate plotting and astonishing set pieces of his novels. Now, with a surprising twist, he gives us his most audacious work yet.

In the final pages of Valhalla Rising, Dirk Pitt discovered, to his shock, that he had two grown children he had never known-twenty-three-year-old fraternal twins born to a woman he thought had died in an underwater earthquake. Both have inherited his love of the sea: the girl, Summer, is a marine biologist; the boy, himself named Dirk, is a marine engineer. And now they are about to help their father in the adventure of a lifetime.

There is a brown tide infesting the ocean off the shore of Nicaragua. The twins are working in a NUMA(r) underwater enclosure, trying to determine its origin, when two startling things happen: Summer discovers an artifact, something strange and beautiful and ancient; and the worst storm in years boils up out of the sky, heading straight not only for them but also for a luxurious floating resort hotel square in its path.

The peril for everybody concerned is incalculable, and, desperately, Pitt, Al Giordino, and the rest of the NUMA(r) crew rush to the rescue, but what they find in the storm's wake makes the furies of nature pale in comparison. For there is an all-too-human evil at work in that part of the world, and the brown tide is only a by-product of its plan. Soon, its work will be complete-and the world will be a very different place.

Though if Summer's discovery is to be believed, the world is already a very different place...

Filled with breathtaking action and suspense, Trojan Odyssey is Cussler at the height of his storytelling powers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cussler is loosing some luster
I've been reading Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels since grade school - always fascinated by the fantastic scenarios and engaged by engrossing action.

Sadly, Pitt is getting a bit long in the tooth. Pages spent on the decor and menus of local restaurants, descriptions of female characters' cosmetic applications straight out of Vogue, and even brief details provided re: sending facsimiles and other trivial action all seem hopelessly out of another time (not 2006 as suggested), and out of place (not occupying the mind of our alert hero, who may or may not share ALL of his author's preoccupations).

I purchased this book on sight. Cussler + Trojan War should = instant delight and a very fast read. However, with rather obvious plot developments leading the way, accompanied by seemingly irrelevant and distracting scenes and/or descriptions of fleeting settings necessitated by said scenes, this has not turned out to be the speedy, pleasurable read I usually associate with Cussler. Furthermore, the introduction of Pitt's kids is going... where?

Of course, anyone who's read the other Pitt adventures MUST read this one, if only to enjoy the quality of Cussler's premise - as good as any that have come before. The discovery of Troy is certainly right up there with Atlantis, et. al. Any true fan will forgive Cussler this time - hopefully he'll reinvigorate the franchise next time around.

And who knows, perhaps Cussler will yet pull off a feat that few other action writers have dared attempt: Realistically aging his hero to the point of retirement, while retaining the audience. I, for one, will keep rooting for Pitt - and Cussler - either way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dirk Pitts Back!
Having read Golden Buddha recently (which I was very disappointed with), I wasn't sure I wanted to read Trojan Odyssey, so I let my father-in-law read it first. When he told me he thought it was Clive's best Dirk Pitt book yet, I was intrigued. I began reading and was soon so entranced with it, I couldn't put it down. Every spare moment I had, I picked this up to continue reading.

I have to say that Clive is truly back in form, his writing is superfluous, his research impeccable. He breathes life into every one of his characters, no matter how short a 'life' they have. Although fiction, Clive has a knack for making the implausible possible.

The story begins with a hurricane of unheard magnitude that devastates the shores off Nicaragua and almost kills hundreds of people in a luxury floating hotel, not to mention Pitt's twin children, Summer and Dirk, who are conducting research in an underwater enclosure in the hurricane's path. And this is just the beginning. There are evil red-headed women to contend with, a link to the story Homer made famous in The Odyssey, the opposite of global warming (brrr) and a little bit of romance thrown in (but not too much for you diehard Dirk Pitt fans).

I have a soft spot for Night Probe, but Trojan Odyssey is easily the next best Dirk Pitt adventure yet. Thank you, Clive, for making up for the abysmal Golden Buddha. Dirk Pitt fans unite and buy this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Dragging but enjoyable
If you've never read Cussler, all his books are done via formula. Essentially they're all the same, but you'll never complain about the retread. They're all the same, yet all very entertaining.

This book is Cussler's last (though not the last of the series). It suffers for that reason, as Cussler strives to tie loose ends.

The reigns are being passed from Dirk Sr to Dirk Jr (a convenient appearance, but not wholly unbelievable). At the same time the reigns are being passed from Clive to his son.

The story is entertaining, and likely was likely read by the writers of The Day After Tomorrow. It was novel before the movie, might be tired after, but this came first.

There are some creepy moments between Dirk Jr and his sister, as she's set up to be a sexy character despite spending much of her time alone with her brother in the middle of the ocean - am I the only one that sees this? Couldn't the editor have stepped in on these?

I won't complain much, though. Cussler has given us many, many (many) entertaining reads, and even though he ends on a dip it is a necessary one, and still a solid effort.

If you're a Cussler fan buy it. If you're not yet a Cussler fan buy this, along with some older ones and read those first.

Adventure fans will not go wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Story, one or two mistakes
Having read all of Cussler Novels, including the ill-fated cooperation books with other authors, I believe he should stuck to Dirk Pitt.

The Story itself is quite solid, tying together several mystical legends. However Cussler should stay to his characters and their story. Lorens father supposed to be dead, died as he tried to savage gear of a lost airplane (Vixen 03), how can she be walked down the aisle at her marriage with Dirk by him? Believing that Cussler has intentional introduced this mistake, like he did in several others of his novel (mixing up Dirk mother names) it could be guessed that he wants us to comment on his books.

Nevertheless it is page turner! Can't stop till the last page. Friends always know when I am not returning calls or emails, that I am reading (again and again) CC books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fairly engrossing, but badly written
While well-plotted, Trojan Odyssey is so unevenly written that I found myself distracted every few pages by another clumily constructed sentence. I could tolerate the bland two-dimensional characters, but when I read a best-selling author who's seemingly so indifferent to the quality of his work as to fail to proofread it, I begrudge him his literary success.
I won't be reading Clive Cussler again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting book for all ages!
The Magician's Nephew takes place in London, a very long ago. During that time lives a girl named Polly Plumber. She lives in row housing, and one day when she is in the garden, a grubby faced boy peers over the fence next door. Polly could tell that the boy had been crying which explains his dirty face. The boy tells her his name is Digory Kirke, and Polly laughed and made a few jokes, and he tells her that he is from a high-class area and he is required to come to this rotten place. He told Polly that his dad is in India, his mother is sick, and his uncle is mad. Digory explains that his Uncle Andrew is very odd, talks of strange things, and hears strange noises coming from his secret room at night. Very soon they begin to build a friendship. From then on, they went on several adventures because his crazy Uncle Andrew and his powerful rings, one including to Narnia. They meet several characters in each place they visit. In Narnia they they meet the Lion, and from him they learn many lessons about life, and they build a very strong relationship with eachother. I would recommend this book for anyone, any age, who likes adventure and fantasy. This book is very detailed, and creative. The characters are very real, especally Polly. Polly is very adventurous, like me. She never backs down on anything. Polly seems like a great person, and like any other child in that time period this book took place. If you like this book, than I deffinitly recommend reading the next book #2 in The Chronicels of Narnia, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. You'll love both!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!!
The first book in the series of The Chronicles of Narnia, The Magician's Nephew is an excellent fantasy that pulls the reader in from the first word! Lewis weaves a fantastic tale that weaves fantasy and reality splendidly. The reader is drawn into Lewis' world of fiction with an amazing ease. Part of the seven book series, The Magician's Nephew is an excellent beginning to what will certainly become a fascinating, enthralling series.

Digory is a young boy who is upset because his mother is dying. When he meets Polly (his next door neighbor), he tells her about his mother and that he is staying next door with his spinster aunt and his bachelor Uncle Andrew so that they can take care of his mother. Polly and Digory soon become good friends and they discover a secret passageway that connects all of the attics in the houses on their row (in London). They stumble into the attic of Digory's Uncle Andrew and he tricks Polly into becoming part of an experiment for him. She puts on a yellow ring and travels to another world. Digory has no choice but to follow her when his Uncle Andrew tells him the secret of how to come back. Digory and Polly end up in the "Wood Between the Worlds," a type of portal to other places and times. Although Polly immediately wants to turn back, Digory convinces her to visit one of the other places first. They choose a pool of water that takes them to the deserted city of Charn, where they awaken Queen Jadis, an evil queen that is bent on leaving her own dead kingdom and conquering London. She attaches herself to Digory while they are trying to escape and they accidentally bring her back to London. Once there, she wreaks havoc on everyone and everything even though her magic powers are not as strong in this new world. Polly and Digory decide that they must return her to her world, so they travel back to the "Woods between the Worlds." Thinking that they have chosen the pool that leads to the city of Charn, they jump in only to find that they are in a new land and they experience the birth of the Land of Narnia. They experience everything to the birth of the sun and stars to the blessing of the first king and queen of Narnia. Digory is sent on a mission to retrieve the fruit of a special tree so that it may be planted in the center of Narnia to protect it from the Witch of Charn, who has hidden herself in the recesses of this new land. After being tempted to eat or [take] the fruit for himself, Digory brings the fruit to Aslan, the creator of Narnia, and he casts out the fruit so that it can grow into a tree. Aslan thanks Digory and tells him to take an apple from the tree and give it to his sick mother so that she might be saved. Polly and Andrew leave Narnia and Digory gives the fruit to his mother, who is healed. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
This book was great! I thought it would take me a long time to read, but it only took me two days. I loved it so much. The Narnia books are great, all of them. This one was the first book and it's about a boy named Digory who has an uncle. His uncle has these magic rings. Polly, Digory's friend, touched a ring and then she entered the world of Narnia. Digory and Polly go through lots of adventures - good ones and bad ones - in the world that they had just discovered.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Christian books I've read in a while........
I am Christian, but I'm one of those types of Christians that doesn't read too much Christian fiction because the stuff I usually find are of the cheesy romance variety or the Left Behind books. I found "Diary of a Teenage Girl" at my local library. I finally decided to give it a try.

Caitlin O'Conner at the beginning of the book starts out as a non-Christian who goes to church with her parents and her brother. After getting accepted into the popular clique at school, Caitlin's life seems to be on a high point, that is until she discovers her dad is having an extramarital affair. Caitlin's Aunt Stephie comes along to help out, and ulitimately takes the family with her to Faith Fellowship, where Caitlin starts to ask questions about religion, while at the same time her friend Jenny's boyfriend is hitting on her. In the end, Caitlin loses her "popular" status. But both she and Josh make decisions for Christ at the same time. After a botched romance, Cailtin decides to make a vow to stay a virgin until marriage, among other things (I'll not give the rest away) Then Caitlin faces more troubles that surprisingly help her walk with God. I can't wait to start the next book in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars the diary of a teenage girl
Caitlin O' Conner was a regular girl not popular and not unpopular. She had one friend and all she needed was one. She didn't see why you had to have alot of friends when you only needed one good friend. Her best friends name was beanie. She had one religion, as a christin, her family got along with each other fine, no relationships, one crush.

Along with caitlin's normal life she was turning 16 and along with that came troubles. On her 16th birthday she had stasrted to become a part of the popular crowd, and from then on things went wrong, her friendship with beanie, her religion, her family life and BIG problems with boys, girls were getting pregnant, and she didn't know if she would have sex or not she was scared that it would effect her religion, friends, and family.

The diary of a teenage girl was the best book I have ever read. this book had a huge impact on the way I see the world, or at least the part that I see everyday.

The book changed my thoughts because I saw things a little bit different. Maybe it was because I am a teenager myself, and I can undersand some of the problems she had.

I would highly recamond this book and expesially if you are a teenager. I guarentee you will see things in you'r environment differently. Like I said I am a teenager and it made a huge impact on me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Thout Provoking Book
I am 14 and I really recomend this book for any teenage girl who is struggling with the problems in this world. This book goes along with a girl who is facing real issues that we face today , such as friendship , keeping yourself pure, love , family , and most of all whether God does exisits, and if He does how do I make Him part of my life . This is a great book to read and it will definantly get you thinking about all of the issues brought up.

5-0 out of 5 stars One the the best and most impacting book I've ever read!
One of my friends gave me this book telling me to read it. After I finished I had to buy all the others in the series. Caitlin was my role-model and she will be yours too when you read this amazing book. Her faith in Christ helps her in any situation. A great book for any teenage girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing...
At least, it was for me. Last summer (2002), I became a CHristan. Not just going to church every SUnday kind of Christian. I mean, a full out want to know all I can Christian. I had never felt like that before. And I owe it all to this book. I read this book that life-altering summer and couldn't put it down. I spent the whole day reading it. Cailin's struggles were like mine -- I could relate to the character, which compelled me even more. The way the book touched me is indescribable. But I thank Melody Carlson for writing such a memorable, life-touching novel for teenagers. It changed my life, my way of thinking. ... Read more

Book Description

He got into nails, of course,
because He'd always loved
hands --
hands were some of the best things
He'd ever done.

In God Went to Beauty School Cynthia Rylant imagines a God whose curiosities about the world He created inspire Him to go out and experience human things. But what would God do if He could live in a human world? Would He write a fan letter? Get a dog? Make spaghetti?

God Went to Beauty School celebrates the simple things in life while taking a long, hard look at what it means to be human. Rylant's soft, reflective, and often humorous verse glimpses everyday life through wide and wondering eyes and blends the familiar with the profoundly spiritual.

5-0 out of 5 stars The holy and the profane
The first Cynthia Rylant book I ever read was the picture book, "When I Was Young In the Mountains". The story was not long or drawn out, and the words in the books were simple and pure. You might expect that in a picture book anyway, but there's a difference between saying what you want clearly and directly and simply being brief. Rylant never says any more nor less than she has to. It's a talent that has served her well in the past and made possible the succinct eloquence that is, "God Went to Beauty School".

I don't know if this book is profane or the holiest collection of poems I've ever read. I think maybe it's a little of both. Unabashedly Christian (with nods of the head to Buddhism) the book is a series sweet simple views of how God goes about His day. 23 poems in all, the book shows God getting a dog, ordering a couch from Pottery Barn, seeing a movie, and so on. These are small vignettes that take a what-if stance and enjoy what they conjure up. The great danger of the book, I suppose, was that it might fall into that old, "What If God Was One of Us", trap. Some could argue that this book is unnecessary if you believe that Jesus was already God. Rylant anticipates this point in the final longest poem, "God Died".

The book is simultaneously funny and touching. I have heard that Bible study groups use the poems to study. That groups of people without religion will ponder the poems line by line. The nicest poem in the group is, to my mind, "God Went to India". I have heard that people have read this poem at funerals. That it encompasses something in all of us, touching us deeply, revealing the truth that everything changes from one thing into another. The book is small and it does not impose itself upon you. It invites you to read it and whether you love it or hate it, it will not attempt to convert you one way or another. It is a book to love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slim Volume of Powerful Poems
Cynthia Rylant doesn't need to use a lot of words to get her point across. This Newberry Medal winning author gives a whimsical and endearing view of God in this book. From eating spaghetti to sailing a boat, God does all the things a human might and sees them with a deep and innocent intensity.
While the book may not be a perfect representation of a real God, it does soften the edges and round the corners of the most powerful being.
Overall, this book is light on the surface but thought provoking in it's simplicity. A great read!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was looking for a new genre for my 5th grade daughter, and I picked this book, normally a huge fan of Rylant. I found the cover statement "soft, reflective and often humorous" to be totally untrue. The book was disturbing in an offensive way. I didn't find any humor at all. The God she tries to know is not the God I know. It seemed very disrespectful. I've read better books that touch on the attributes of God in a loving, funny, soft way while opening the reader's eyes to the possibility of being inside God's mind. Rylant missed the mark in a big way this time. I will continue to read her work, and I hope that it will reflect growth, especially in this area.

5-0 out of 5 stars What IF God was one of us?...
This poetry about placing god in "mundane" situations, dealing with them as if a mere human, is not only whimsical/fanciful. I implore you to read the poems multiple times (preferably after giving them some time to sink in) if they initially strike you as this shallow. Mrs. Ryant verses far transcends the trite, flippant or ... rolls eyes... blasphemous. These poems are refreshing, as they creatively hit the bullseye of imbuing everyday situations with godliness. There is plenty of genuine humor thinking about something traditionally associated with omnipotence becoming a nail stylist, having difficulty with credit card companies, or about owning a dog. And if a book can get across some genuine spiritual lessons to me all the while making me chuckle, if not outright laugh... it's worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book
I loved the whole idea of God being "normal", that he had a cold, that he would like someone else to have dinner with (because communion is just not the same as having dinner) I read this twice, smiled, thought, grinned, giggled. what a neat way of humanizing the Man Upstairs! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
I have the task of planning crafts for a Wednesday night children's program. I love doing the craft, but sometimes have a hard time finding craft that work well. This book is a wonderful resource! Every craft has a drawing of the craft and some steps envolved. All patterns are included and the book is reproducibe. It is divided into two main sections: crafts for prekindergarten-kindergarten, and crafts for 1-6 graders. However, all craft seem fun and interesting. There are craft for many stories of the Bible, and sometimes 3 or 4! I am looking forward to trying all of the crafts! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone loves it!
I looked at a lot of bibles before I purchaced Kids Quest. I bought it for my six year old son. He loves this bible. As a matter of fact, he devours this bible! One night, after he had gone to bed, I picked it up and started reading. The questions and illustrations are really cool. Our pastor also was impressed. He borrowed it and ended up buying his own copy. He used some of the study topics as inspiration for his childrens time sermons. Our church has since purchased hardcover copies for all the children in our sunday school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Find
My 6 year old son wanted a bible that he could read and understand and I found it with this bible. It is easy to understand. The words are small enough for him that he can sound them out and it gives him answers to questions that I sometimes can't find the words for. The only problem he has had with the Bible was the translation of the scripture. He goes to a christian school and they learn a scripture every week. Last week he had to read and memorize the 23rd Psalm. He knew most of it, but we could not use his bible we had to use mine. When in church I have him follow along in my bible and he uses his at home or when he wants to read a scripture but he wants to do it by himself. Overall the Kid's Bible is excellent. I have found you just have to make adjustments here and there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The NIrV Kid's Quest Study Bible is excellent.
I recently purchased the NIrV Kid's Quest Study Bible for my 7 year old who just compleated first grade. My child and I are very pleased with it. The NIrV is based on the NIV version of the Bible but has been rewritten on a third grade reading level making it perfect for a new reader. The NIrV Kid's Quest Bible also has 500 questions and answers to many of the questions that kids ask. Examples are questions like , "Is it o.k. to hit my brother back if he hit me first?" and "Why do we pray?" The answers are Biblically based and references to scripture are given with each Q&A. The Q&A's help to show children how to apply God's Word in their lives. ... Read more

Book Description

Jan Brett's intricate illustrations against a beautiful papyrus background make a stunning picture book of a favorite story-this time featuring Noah's granddaughter. As the floodwaters rise, she helps take the animals onto the ark and get them settled down. But it's not easy when giraffes are sleeping next to pandas and lions are curled up with turkeys. Finally the gentle rocking of the ark lulls them all to sleep until the waters recede and Grandpa Noah, his family, and all the animals leave the ark. This simple telling, combined with extraordinary illustrations of every animal imaginable, makes On Noah's Ark perfect for young and old. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Oooops! She left out the main character!
Beautiful illustrations do not make up for the fact that there's not even a nod to the Creator of the story! Come on, "Grandpa Noah says that the rains are coming"!?!?!? Wasn't it God who said the rains are coming? (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish it were longer!
Written from the viewpoint of Noah's grandson, this is a charming story from onboard the ark. My just turned 2 year old loves it and I don't mind reading it over and over (and over and over). We have other Noah's Ark books but many require too much explaination or are too scary for this age group. I am planning to buy this for cousins and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
Once again Jan Brett's illustrations are a treat for the eye. This is a simple telling of the ark story from another point of view. Noah wasn't the only one on the ark and children love to imagine what other people on the ark were like. This is a wonderful book to use to get a discussion going with young children and get them thinking about the ark and it's passengers.

3-0 out of 5 stars A different story
This is a beautifully illustrated story about a little girl on a fantastic animal cruise. If you want a lovely book with gorgeous pictures of animals, you'll like this book. If you want to teach your child about the Noah of Genesis, look instead at the wonderful Noah's Ark by Peter Spier. That book also has lovely illustrations, but sticks much closer to the Biblical version of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Jan Brett's best!
Beautiful illustrations and a creative storytelling make this version of the Noah's Ark story a must have! As a Christian Parent raised in a family that never discussed sex, I found this book (and the series) to be a great starting point. It hits all the right topics in a way that communicates a Christian view without using guilt or sounding preachy. Parents should read it themselves, then pass it on to their child. 5-0 out of 5 stars The First Story for a New Child of God
Walt Wangerin, professor, teacher, writer, pastor, and most of all, child of God, has given us a precious gift: an illuminating storybook about God's gift of baptism. This book fills a void in the world of children's literature, drawing children into their rightful place in the household of faith, The Church. The text is written in rhyming couplets, a style that children love; after hearing it a few times, they can supply the rhymes that follow each line (as they do with Dr. Seuss books). The story is told from the perspective of creation itself, rejoicing at the baptism of the child, and his/her place in the world. This is done gracefully and lovingly. The illustrations are glorious! The artist, Gerardo Suzan, has a simple, delightful style that children can interpret easily; yet included within the simple paintings are classic symbols of creation and Christian iconography. The illustrations and the text are a perfect marriage. The back of the storybook includes scriptural and theological clarification of the story and paintings. This is helpful for parents with their own questions about baptism; I believe that quality children's books offer something for the adults as well as for the children. This is a "lap" book, something to be enjoyed and shared for families. Baptism is the perfect occasion to give this book;on the baptismal day, have the family, the sponsors, the pastors, and the whole congregation sign the book as a remembrance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Children's Book With Lots of Heart
I pondered the idea of writing this review like Dr. Seuss would, but I didn't want to try and fall on my face. "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is one of those children's books that are almost flawless (right up there with "Where the Wild Things Are"). The Grinch has spent years looking down at Whoville and hating the Whos for their joy, and especially at Christmas time. He decides to put an end to their joy by masquerading as Santa and stealing Christmas. Of course, it doesn't go exactly the way he planned.

The story's beauty comes from three sources: the heart in the story, the way it's written, and the maturity of the approach. By "the heart" I mean that it deals with a transformation of the Grinch that could be called an epiphany. It ranks right up there with the transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol". The character finds a much better way to live.

I think everyone knows what I mean by "the way it's written" but, just in case, I'll say a little on the subject. Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) wrote some of the best, most lyrical, most amusing poetry in history. The only reason he isn't routinely grouped with The Great Poets of History is that his poetry was very (and beautifully) simplistic and designed for children.

By "the maturity of the approach" I mean that this is a children's book that hits the perfect tension level for children. It does not treat that them as totally fragile (Santa gets kidnapped, Christmas almost gets sabotaged, Max the dog is treated as a slave) but it also relieves them and rescues them from their fears in a well-paced and realistic way that mirrors how parents can talk to their children about real-life fears and scary incidents.

One of the top children's books. In my opinion, this is the best of Dr. Seuss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming tale!
As Hollywood prepares to unleash yet another dreary, mangled version of a classic book, I found myself sitting down to read "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" yet again.

The Grinch, for no apparent reason, REALLY hates Christmas and the Whos of Whoville love it. Angered by their holiday festivities and happiness, he plots to steal their presents and decorations, under the assumption that Christmas can't/won't exist without them. So he sets off with faithful but much-kicked canine Max to destroy Christmas. But is Christmas only presents and ornaments?

Dr. Seuss's delightfully-skewed rhymes and names are as enjoyable as ever, making the important message of Christmas infinitely more palatable than if it had been a much-regurgitated, cliched book. I admit it--at the beginning the Christmas season I tend to act Grinchish, and I felt much better after reading this book...

If you like this book, then check out the old cartoon special (though not the live-action one). "Grinch" is a treasure in kid's literature and can be enjoyed by anyone...

5-0 out of 5 stars How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Dr. Seuss's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is a story about a character who is miserable and dislikes anything good and happy.
The author believes it is because the Grinch's heart is too small. The Grinch tries to stop Christmas from coming to the Whos down in the village below called Who-ville. He stole all their presents, food, decoratons and everything they owned. He thought they woud have nothing to celebrate without gifts. Instead, he learned a valuable lesson - that Christmas is something much more that presents. It is the spirit of giving and being together that bring joy. Dr. Seuss has a way of teaching a lesson with funny characters and rhyming phrases. I think this is a good story for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Story
This Childrens book is one of my favorites. It teaches kids a very good lesson. It teaches them the true meaning of Christmas. It shows them that Christmas isn't about just toys. I think this is one of the best children's books I ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrooge for Kids
Maybe that's oversimplifying a bit, but the basics are the same. In this story, we have the Grinch, who hates Christmas and every year must put up with the celebration of the Whos who live in the valley below his cave. But this year things will be different. This year, he intends to do something about it. Surely the Whos will be disappointed when they wake up Christmas morning to discover that all their presents and decorations have been stolen. Or will they?

Told is classic Seuss fashion, completely in rhymes, this book appeals to kids year round. I know I insisted that it be read to me more then just in December. The fanciful illustrations, also classic Seuss, are just as engaging as this story. After all, what could be worse to kids then no Christmas? Yet there is a message here that there is more to Christmas then the commercialism we see around us. It's subtle and not expanded on greatly, but it's there none-the-less.

Surely Charles Dickens' classic tale was an influence when Dr. Seuss sat down to write this book. Both the main characters hate Christmas and miss the point, but have a revelation that shows them how important Christmas really is. Of course, the meat of the stories is completely different, so kids not ready for Dickens will love this one.

If there is such a thing as a classic picture book, this belongs in that category. Enjoyable at Christmas, or the whole year round. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "Sprightly, conversational style" with KVJ?
I can understand that a book written in 1962 would quote the Bible from the King James Version. And it's ironic that I'm reading this book to my own children who are about the same age I was when the book was first written.

But I'm disappointed that the publisher didn't update the quotes and hymns to reflect where children are today, perhaps a more "sprightly, conversational"* translation and choruses the kids might hear most Sunday Schools? (* a quote from back cover describing this book)

I'm sure we'll still be able to reap much of what was sown by the author for our children, by paraphrasing the KJV verses and singing simple choruses.

Whither thou goest, let thy buyer bewareth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of the WONDER of the Lord!
I am so impressed with this children's devotional! The language is written to capture a child's attention and hold it. The power and wonder of God is displayed and portrayed throughout the entire book, in every lesson. It is easy for a young child to understand, and deep and meaningful enough to inspire thought in an older child. We are halfway through and will be repeating it again after we are finished.

It begins with Part One: Looking for God, and Part Two: God is Very Great. Each "part" consists of about 5-8 individual lessons on the subject, using people from the Bible to learn from, in how God uses them. Then we are taken through the introduction of sin, God's law, what Jesus did for us, prayer, and several others, ending with Part Fourteen: Things That Are to Happen. Each lesson includes "something to talk about" (questions for the children to answer about the lesson), a related Scripture from the Bible, suggested Bible reading, a hymn to sing that relates to the lesson, and a prayer to say, asking the Lord to help us with those things we learned that day in our lesson.

Needless to point out here, I can't say enough about this devotional. It is a wonderful way to teach your children about God in a thorough and consistant way, and help them to love learning about the Lord and his nature, and what he does for his children. You'll love going through it with your little ones and watching their love and understanding for God grow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Devotional Activity
My boys, ages 5, 7 and 9, and I went through this book over the last year, with each son taking turns reading the associated scripture, reading or singing the hymn (we knew about 1/3 of them) or praying through the closing prayer. It really did cover the basics of the Christian faith and life in more depth than we would normally discuss. I consider this a classic and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars prized resource
I have used this to put together a Sunday School lesson at the last minute. Very conservative, traditional, fundamental view of doctrine. I love it. I am buying copies for all my nieces and nephews whose...parents don't know how to answer their questions about God.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for Children
I had a hard time trying to find a book that could easily communicate, in a child's language, the truths about God and the bible. As a parent, sometimes it's difficult to explain to a small child what we already know. This book does an exceptional job explaining different truths in each story. My children loved hearing the stories each night, and the simple questions at the end of each story stimulated their thinking. I read this book to them each night as they were toddlers and small children. Today, they are teenagers and have an excellent foundation with knowing right from wrong and biblical truths. I highly recommend this book to any parent who wants their child to know God. ... Read more

In this outstanding edition of the Bible, the stories of the Old and New Testaments are retold by Selina Hastings in a lucid, flowing style for children's enjoyment and edification. Hastings consulted with a cadre of educators, scholars, and religious advisors to retain the original feel and poetry of the Bible, while appealing to contemporary young readers with clear, lively language. The somewhat lackluster illustrations on every page are not nearly as compelling as the stories themselves, but the variety of other artwork, including maps and color photographs of artifacts, plants, biblical places, animals, people, and architecture, makes up for any deficit there. All the best-known parables and teachings are here, including "The Plagues of Egypt," "The Birth of Jesus," "Jacob's Ladder," "Noah's Ark," "Judas Plots to Betray Jesus," and "The Resurrection," among many others. This volume also includes a "Who's Who in the Bible Stories" as well as quotations from the King James Bible, identified by chapter and verse. 3-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully illustrated....
While children may not have a hard time reading this book, I did...so, it is not for parents to read to their children if you have trouble with a very small font. That way my only disappointment. The size of the actual book is very convenient and would be easy for a child to hold. The font is smaller then most adult Bibles.

The illustrations are wonderful, the stories inspirational and retold in language that is clear and yet retains the original "poetry" of the Bible.

"So it is that we must make the most of what God gives us, and then we will be prepared to enter the kingdom of Heaven." -pg. 255, The Parable of the Talents

An index and a listing of "who's who" makes this more useful as a text. There are quotations from the King James Version sprinkled through the book. Color photographs of animals, plants and people puts the stories into context. All the pictures are explained, making reading this particular Bible a complete learning experience.

The stories are retold by Selina Hastings and an Introduction to the Bible explains that the Bible is a collection of books written by different people. Eric Thomas has even illustrated the Contents section. His artwork complements the style of Selina's writing.

Children love the stories of the Bible and I remember my first children's Bible very well. A belief in God is very comforting through life and a Children's Bible helps children to understand who God is and will increase their love for others.

Through my own studies as a child, I learned that God does love us, even when it seems he is nowhere to be found. The trust I have in God and my belief stems from learning about God and understanding his purpose in my life at an early age.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best children's Bible I've seen
One great difficulty in reading Bible stories to children is the wealth of unfamiliar things, ideas, and terms. The Dorling Kindersley retellings are not only short and elegant to read, but unfamiliar items are illustrated and explained right on the page. No searching around for the picture or definition of a "lulag" or "shekel." This makes the DK version especially "user-friendly" and understandable by kids. The wealth of scholar/consultants from different religious traditions assures that it authoritative and equally useful to kids of different religious backgrounds. The DK Children's Bible has become my gift of choice for newborns, whether the parents are dedicated Christians or only those who want their kids to see the Bible as great literature. A truly wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sunday School Teacher recommends this Bible!
I have been a catechist, teaching elementary school age children for over four years. I use this book extensively in my sessions with the kids, because they listen...intently. Rather than many dumbed-down, Disneyesque versions of children's Bibles that I have seen, and rather than the somewhat lame materials offered by our church, the Children's Illustrated Bible connects with kids. It does not insult their intelligence, but enhances it. The rich liturgies of the Old and New Testaments are brought to life with vivid portraiture and detailed factual explanation. Want to know more about life in the Middle East in biblical times? It's there. Want to know what type of wood might have been used in the Ark? Or what mountain range Ararat belongs to?

My students, ages 5-9, are harsh critics. When something isn't real, or interesting, or meaningful, they simply turn off. Too many of the standard cut, color and paste exercises last five minutes with them. But when I pull this book out to read the wonderful stories of Noah, Moses, the Flight from Egypt, Jesus calming the sea, and so forth - the kids listen with mouths agape. They strain their necks to see the beautiful illustrations and pictures.

This Bible is an excellent gift for god-children, for nieces and nephews, for your kids. Even if you are not religious, your kids will benefit deeply from hearing and reading the wonderful tales of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and step up their cultural literacy significantly.

3-0 out of 5 stars A nice resource for Bible time with your kids
We use this to home church our children. I bought it for my 10 year old and he really looks forward to our Bible time together. This is a nice Bible with photos when possible, explanations of terms and situations which might be confusing. My son and I have been enjoying our time together reading through the stories. So far, the stories have followed along in sequence with not much left out. The language is straight forward, non-denominational.

The introduction to the book has some nice detailed drawings of the temple spoken of frequently in the O.T. as well as some other specific Hebrew ceremonies.

A nice addition to your home library.

3-0 out of 5 stars type too small
If this is intended for children, they should have considered the size of the type. It's smaller than what one finds in a phone book, and I don't know how any child could read it without having his eyes becoming weary. The look inside pages on the website are deceptive, as they show the type to be somewhat larger. ... Read more

Welcome to the hilariously hypothetical world of Laura Numeroff andFelicia Bond. Everything has an impact on everything else in this world, so ifyou take a mouse to the movies, don't be surprised if you find yourself beingrun ragged by the exuberant little fellow's increasingly grand appetites. Whenwe first met him in Numeroff and Bond's tremendously popular If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,he had more energy than a 2-year-old on lollipops. Now, in the excitement ofthe Christmas season, he's unstoppable. Going from movie theater to Christmastree lot to the neighbor's yard for snowmouse-building, he's a very demandingmouse indeed--in only the best way, of course.

The freshness of the If You Give a... series is diminished only slightly as thesequels pile up. The dazed and earnest look on the face of the mouse'slong-suffering friend makes a marvelous foil for the mouse's high-spiritedexpressions. Adult readers will chuckle as they recognize the ephemeral passionsof a child, while children will simply love the unfolding chain of events. Aperfect Christmas read-aloud for the impetuous youngster on your list. (Ages 4to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for Christmas Holidays
'If You Take A Mouse To The Movies' by Laura Numeroff, with Illustrations by Felicia Bond, A Laura Geringer Book, 2000.

This is an excellent continuation of the collaboration of Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond on children's books based upon fanciful 'IF/THEN' statements. If you take a Mouse to the movies, then he will want popcorn; THEN, this results in his stringing the popcorn to decorate the Christmas Tree (which is the central theme of this beautiful book), and then, and so on. Each improbable 'THEN' is the joy of this book. For example, the little Mouse is given just the right clothes for the wintry weather, including a cute red woolen cap, with holes for his large ears. Finally, after making snowmen, decorating a Christmas Tree, you will come full circle, and, after giving the Mouse another batch of popcorn, again, ''he'll want you to take him to the moves'.

I enjoyed reading this book to my grandchildren. The younger boys (twins) were captivated by the richness of details in Felicia. Bond's illustrations, while the older grandchildren (especially the girl) rolled their eyes at the 'silliness' of each new IF/THEN situation 'for example, a Mouse making a 'snowman' and (!) with snowy white mouse ears! The Christmas theme makes this an ideal gift for the impending holidays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Mouse is Back...
If you take a mouse to the movies, he'll ask for popcorn. When you bring him some, it will remind him of Christmas and he'll want to string it...then he'll demand a tree to hang it from...seeing the snow on the ground will make him want to build a snowmouse, then a snow fort, a snow fort fight...and on and on. This little mouse is as busy and demanding as ever in this fourth book of the series. Laura Numeroff's simple, funny text, captures the essence of the pre-school mind as her mouse jumps from one idea to the next, in his logical little mind, until finally coming full circle, back to the popcorn. Felicia Bond's colorful, busy and expressive illustrations compliment the story perfectly and your youngsters will love finding all the special little details, hidden in the pictures. Children of all ages will be amused and delighted as they enjoy the chaos this little mouse wreaks on his human friend. This is a wonderful holiday book the whole family will enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars I know this book by heart...
My seventeen-month old son will search through his vast library to find this book (and the others in this series), protesting when I try to compromise with another selection. He loves the story, knows when to turn the page (which is no longer necessary, as I can recite them all from memory) and will accept no subsitute. I even tried burying the books away so that I could read something new to him, but he dug them out, carried them down the stairs and insisted I drop everything to recall what are apparently his favorite stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars special
This is a funny book, nice pictures, great book by Laura Numeroff. Follow, the holiday fun and irresistable tale about taking a mouse to the movies. Colorful artwork by illustrator Felicia Bond.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not About the Movies.
I picked this book up because I thought it was going to be a story about watching movies with a mouse. However, it's not. Instead it's about what happens when a young boy takes a mouse to the movies and how he gets sidetracked on the way home into doing all sorts of things assorted with Christmas: from getting a Christmas tree, to building a snowman, to building a snowfort. The illustrations are quite nice and children love hearing this story read over and over. Even though, I used to teach at a preschool, I didn't know this book was written by the same lady who wrote IF YOU GIVE A MOOSE A MUFFIN. That book is much more interesting and the zany connections made are more humorous for all ages. Nevertheless, IF YOU TAKE A MOUSE TO THE MOVIES is a decent book and makes for some fun holiday reading with youngsters--read the book, then do some of the activities described together. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!
Wow! This is a fabulous bible! I highly recommend it for young men. We just bought this for our oldest son, who is 12 going on 30!..=) He reads it everyday, and I don't have to ask him to! He told me the other day that it is the first bible he has had that is fun to read, and that makes sense to him- he said it's like they took all his questions and tailored his bible specifically for him! Definately well worth the money- this is a great version!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic "guy" Bible.
This is a great new Bible recently released by Zondervan. I've taken occasion to really look it over and I am impressed.

The pages of this Bible are filled with one line study portions. There are several recurring themes for added reading that allow a young guy to explore the meanings of the Holy writ. They're short enough to pay attention to and rich enough to add something meaningful to the text.

There are dozens and dozens of colorful pages with tips and ideas for living the Christian Life. How about ideas for a date or team projects, there here with enough flair to grab
