5-0 out of 5 stars Award Winner for Book Design
This book has won a Southern Books Competition Award of Merit in Book Design from the Southeastern Library Association. This award is given in recognition of the book's aesthetic appeal and design and for fine craftsmanship in its printing and binding. Congratulations to author Ruth L. Boling, designer and illustrator Tracey Dahle Carrier, printer Midas Printing, and the Geneva Press.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Church Mice
Ruth Boling's words and Tracy Carrier's illustrations combine to make a simple, yet powerful invitation for kids to experience the beauty of the Christian year. Most amazing are the details of Christian symbols on the mice's clothing and the facial expression on these very churchy mice. It's like looking at people in the pews I've known for years! The chart of symbols in the back is great. It would make a wonderful first communion, Sunday School, or Christmas gift. My kids love both the pictures and the text. I heard there is a matching Advent calendar but don't see that advertised here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars!
This charming book simplifies for children the traditions of the Christian church year. The delightful, rich illustrations are alive with wonderful, sensitive details. I cannot say enough about what a valuable resource this is for family and church communities. It makes all the special days throughout the church year more meaningful and more accessible to children and adults alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book for Children and Adults
Complete with spectacular illustrations, this is an easy to read and understand journey through the Christian year. A delightful church mouse shares his experiences of each key event in the life of the church (Christmas, Epiphany, Ash Wednesday, Easter, Pentecost, etc.). At the end are multiple pages with Christian symbols and their meaning. This is a wonderful book for families to share the with their children. Or, for adults wanting a charming and meaningful refresher course on the important days and symbols of their faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift for Godchildren
A wonder-filled journey through the church calendar, beautifully illustrated with a congregation of very human-looking church mice. Everyone will learn something from this book, but it's probably best for children between 3 and 10 (although the comprehensive appendix of Christian symbols would be useful for anyone). I gave Boling's much simpler previous book to my godchildren, who loved it, and I can't wait to send them this one. Perhaps most importantly, it can serve as a conversation-starter between adults and parents on the subjects of faith, worship, God and community. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I read it to my kids so much I need a new copy!
Although it uses a comic book style, this book is both reverent and comprehensive. It tells the Bible stories from the creation in Genesis to the prophecies in Revelations. My copy is dog eared because I have read it cover to cover with each of my children. All have enjoyed it. My oldest is an Agnostic and has gone on to analyzing more advanced religeous topics. My middle one is a true believer and likes to tell everyone about Abraham and his other impressive ancestors. I am still reading it to my youngest. He makes sound effects to dramatize the Old Testament Miracles. The drawings ae not great art, but they are realistic and effectively convey the meaning of the stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this book
My ten-year-old son reads this book nearly as much as his comic books! It's in comic book format. His friends enjoy it as well. His friends' parent's ask me where I got it. They want one for their children! It's not an actual Bible, but Bible stories. We own quite a few Bible story books, but none that he has read as willingly as this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comic book collection of bible stories--in order; must buy
The "Picture Bible", written and illustrated by Iva Hoth & Andre Le Blanc respectively, is more than a worthwhile book to read, unprecedented & as well an auspicious find. THIS BOOK IS ENTIRELY AND COMPLETELY PRESENTED IN COMIC BOOK FORMAT. Ostensibly, the book primarily aims for novice &/or beginner bible readers. Like me, I learned a great loads about the stories infused here, such as acquainting to Abraham, Jesus Christ, Paul & the other Christ's disciples, etc. However, this book by all means, is suitable for all to read & enjoy. This work, turned out as well to be significant, valuable & a must have in everybody's bookshelf.

The compilation of abridged, yet incisive & more than substantial stories here, were deliberately presented in chronological orders. For instance, from the opening pages, you will encounter these stories in chronological orders. From creation, to Noah, to Isaac, to Jacob, etc. Thereby, the Old Testament can be found from the opening pages of the book, while the New Testament can be found in the latter 2nd-half(starting from page 545).

The book is primarily divided into two major parts-- the Old Testament & the New Testament sections. And the two major parts are further subdivided into sub-headings & CAN BE EXCELLED TO READ EACH ONE AS A STAND-ALONE TALES with little or no hitches at all. In fact, there is a table of contents that sited at the beginning pages of the book for your guidance & perusal. To illustrate my point, looking into the table of contents, & into the New Testaments section(likewise the Old Testament),the story of the New Testament begin with the sub-heading "Jesus birth & ministry", which runs from page 545 to 630. Then the next sub-heading, "Jesus final days", encompassing pages 633-671. So on & so forth.

Hence, for further exposition, in the New Testament section. The story commence from the birth, life, ministry, death & resurrection of Jesus Christ. Then, next, the sub-heading part about Christ's disciples burdening his teachings & ministrys. Then the last part(sub-heading) about the mission & contribution of Paul, a Christ disciple. Please do not get worried or confused, because all of these are actually vividly delineated prior at the beginning pages of the table of contents.

"Pictur Bible" has approximately 800 pages. All in full-color,in comic book format. The size of the book mimic-ed the "real" bible itself-- similar lenght, width & thickness. This hardcover version(my copy) is bound in a synthetic maroon color, leather.

The script written was concise, deliberate, vivid & easy to read and follow. The artworks as well, were life-like(as opposes to cartoony), sharp & detailed, & eye-pleasing. A terrific tome to add to your collections.

Although, first published in 1978, this book was no means passe'. On the contrary, as a whole, the book is very impressive as ever, especially pertaining to the art. The artwork look very fresh, very contemporary & extremely gorgeous. In no way, in anyhow, the book, especially the art, were not anything like degraded, blemished or substandard in its quality.

I keep on underlying & reiterating the artworks more than the writings, simply because if the book was somehow affected with obsoletion, the art shall be the first to surface above all others. None were anything that were neither old, passe', or decrepit. On the opposite, it looks really strong, fresh & most significant of all, contemporary as ever. The same thing can be said pertaining to the script. The author narratives, captions & dialogues were top-notch & precedently laid down.

If you like or will like this book, & incline to further read other "literary" books in comic book format, I have a few recommendations that myself extremely fond of. "Four Women " by Sam Kieth; "Maus" vol. 1 & 2 by Art Spiegelmann; "Samson: Judge of Israel" by Metron Press; & "King David" by Kyle Baker. All of them are available here at amazon.com.

A must own. A superior book to add to your collections.

Highest possible recommendation !

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I grew up with The Picture Bible, and it is absolutely outstanding. Even minor characters, like David's general Joab, are rendered identifiably in the pictures. The stories are presented in chronological order, not in the order they are contained in the Bible, which makes the history much more easy to understand and to follow. Since it's a book for kids, it does bowdlerize the stories a bit, mainly in the Old Testament, but not in a way that really undermines their significance. It makes the book come alive in a sense that is helpful both in a devotional sense and also in an historical or literary sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for this Bible
I was given this book as a child and it made such an impact on me that I am rebuying it. I'm about to be 22 years.
This really helped lead me to God because it was so alive and fascinating to me. As a kid who grew up hating church, it was my Best Friend, and was what kept me from falling further away from God. I truly thank God for this Bible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Blessing
Beautiful. Elizabeth George and Judy Luenebrink did a wonderful job in the creation of this book. Both the poetry and the illustrations are absolutely great...truly a pleasure. Elizabeth did such a good job of tying together her poetry to the verses of scripture on each page. I just wish I had had a copy twenty years ago to read with my three daughters as they were growing up. Hopefully, I can read it with granddaughters some day. (Great gift for new mothers of daughters).

I can't say enough wonderful things about this book! It is truely a treasure... I think every child should read such a beautiful book. The teachings are important and the pictures are wonderful. After reading this book, I am buying other Elizabeth George books!

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful little book for girls!
I learned a really important lesson myself while reading thhis book to my daughter. I would reccomend this book to any parent wanting to instill the Truth of God word to there daughters.

5-0 out of 5 stars All women and women with daughters need this book!
I have always hoped there would be a book like this one....and finally here it is! This book captures the essence of Proverbs 31 and how we can define and apply this Proverb today. Proverbs 31 has been my goal as a wife, mother and Christian for years, but I have been confused in that past how I could apply this Proverb to my life today. This is the perfect book for your daughters also - it is written on there level of understanding also. It can be used for the young and old alike, plus it would make the perfect gift for a new Christian mom that is having a baby girl. The pictures are beautiful and inviting. Thank you Elizabeth George! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in the world for Christians
The first time I read this book, I thought it was going to be boring, but when I went to the second book it got really good, and I couldn't stop reading them! When I finished them I told my mom we needed to buy the other one.
I got the series to 18, but I need 16.

I recomend this book to every one. Even if your not christian, but when you read it don't be scared about what happens in the book because it is really going to happen in real life! I'm a christian myself and I'm getting ready for the rapture. This book is great I love it ! It even tells you what happens when your left behind.
All I can say is that this book is the best in the world!

4-0 out of 5 stars Left Behind
I think this is a really great series of books. The books explain the end times very well. They are easy to understand for younger readers and would be amazingly exciting for all ages. I would highly recomend these books to everyone. I would also recomend the adult series for the advanced readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just for kids?
My wife I have read the first seven Left Behind books (to each other) and are in the middle of No. 8. We find these books hard to put down as most people do. What I didn't count on was my reaction to "The Kids." About 15 months ago I ordered a used copy of book #1, just to see how the story was presented to our children. To date, my wife and I have read independently all 18 volumes!
While they are quick reads and very easy to follow, they are definitely not just for kids. They present a compelling story line parallel to the "big Kids" books, but from a point of view that makes me think our kids may not be so bad.
A story of hope for children, Left Behind presents one view of what they might face in the not so distant or unbelievable future. ALL KIDS, of any age should read these books if for no other reason than the fun of it. Action, adventure, personal relationships and scriptural authority, all the most sought after ingredients are here. I believe youngsters over about 12 years could move right over to the adult version and be hooked immediately. These books are wonderful! Thanks to LaHaye and Jenkins: keep them coming! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for new Grandmothers!
I have given this book to five friends and several family members who have become new grandmother's!! Now all my friends and their relatives want this book! It is an excellent family storybook that shares fun times and special feelings! A "must have" for Grandmothers reading list! I guarantee your friends will love the gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excitement of being a grandmother......
When I first found out that I was going to be a grandmother for the first time, I started noticing books about grandmothers. I looked through this book and thought it was so cute, so I bought it, intending to give it to my grandchild.
When my son was married, his wife had a seven year old daughter. Now that they are expecting, I decided I needed to make her daughter feel special to me before the baby was born. They haven't been married for long, so I haven't had the chance to bond with her as yet. So, one day, when she was at my house and climbing all over my son, I decided she needed something to settle her down, so I went and got this book and gave it to her. She immediately wanted to read it with me. So she began reading and looking at the pictures. It got her attention quickly with the wording of the way grandmothers and their grandchildren could spend quality time. She'd read and then look at me with those big brown eyes and smile or giggle. It was the first time we had connected as a grandmother and grandchild. I finished the last couple of pages for her as she sat in my lap. When we finished it, she hugged my neck. That was when my heart melted for the first time as a "Grammy."
I went shopping yesterday and bought some super soaker water guns that she and I could play with...which was a way to have fun together, which is the theme of this book. I can't wait until I surprise her with them. It is a sweet book to share with your grandchild about how you can bond with your grandchild by doing silly things. Leave the discipline to the parents and just enjoy them. It was the first time I had experienced the unconditional love that a grandchild can give you in return. I might be going through the experience of a first grandchild's birth, but I have learned that this will surely be my second grandchild; my first is a seven year old little girl with big brown eyes that loved this book.

Book Description

Jesus taught his followers through the use of parables; seemingly simple tales that reveal a deeper, more complex meaning. Christians the world over continue to tell and to ponder these timeless lessons. Now Mary Hoffman recounts eight of these important stories in accessible, beautiful language, perfect for sharing with a child. Every parable features an introduction and an afterword that convey Ms. Hoffman's insights into the parables and helps to make them understandable in the contemporary world.

These lovely, eternal stories are marvelously complemented by the soft, richly colored watercolors of Jackie Morris. This is a treasure for readers both young and old.

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost ruined by intrusive commentary
"Parables: Stories Jesus Told" features text adapted by Mary Hoffman and art by Jackie Morris. This children's book presents several of the classic parables of Jesus of Nazareth. The retold stories include the parables of the good Samaritan, the sower, the prodigal son, the unforgiving servant, and more.

The stories are retold with effective simplicity. Morris' artwork is truly wonderful; her warm, rich tones bring to life the Middle East of Jesus' era. Her human faces are full of emotion, and she is also masterful at illustrating sheep, a wheatfield, flatbreads, and other elements.

The only bad thing about this book are the preachy, hit-you-over-the-head afterwords that follow each retold parable. These stories are some of the world's great literature, and should be allowed to speak for themselves; for a children's book, they only need the accompaniment of great artwork.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of family-friendly shows for everyone
This is where it all began. The first 12 episodes of Focus on the Family's Adventures in Odyssey series, which is still going strong today. Featuring the voice of Hal Smith (best known as Otis Campbell from the Andy Griffith shows) as Mr. Whittaker, the show can entertain adults and kids alike, using the theater of the mind rather than of the eye.

The shows also teach encouraging morals, such as contentedness, and self-esteem (among others) from a Christian perspective. You should check these out, and give the other titles a chance as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Wee Sing tape I still listen to.
What a great compilation of holiday songs. When I was two, my Mom bought Wee Sing and Play, Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes and Lullabies, Wee Sing Silly Songs, and a gazillion other tapes in the Wee Sing series, including this one. I still have all of them. I'd have to say that this one is my favorite. I'm 22 now, and Wee Sing For Christmas is the only Wee Sing tape I still listen to. Unlike many of the other Wee Sing tapes, with this one, adults join in on the chorus on most of the numbers making it sound almost like a choir. Some of the songs are sung only by adults. All of the well loved Christmas songs are on here, there's songs about caroling, Jesus's birth, and finally Santa Claus. You are sure to find your favorites here. Even if you're into your sixties and don't have any children, buy yourself a copy. But beware! Wee Sing for Christmas is only for the young, and the Young at Heart.

4-0 out of 5 stars good collection
This is a good collection of many Christmas songs. I'm not particularly fond of the tape, not liking the arrangements and children's voices all that much. But the music book that accompanies the tape is well worth having--useful season after season, with 58 different songs. Secular songs like Here Comes Santa Claus, Up on the housetop, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Deck the Halls, Here We Come A-Caroling, O Christmas Tree, and of course Jingle Bells. More traditional songs, too, like the Twelve Days of Christmas, The First Noel, Joy to the World, We Three Kings, O Come, All Ye faithful, Silent Night. And some children's favorites like The Little Drummer boy, Children, Go Where I send Thee and Go Tell It on the Mountain. There are also some unfamiliar songs, like 'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime (a Huron Indian carol which is beautiful) and Three Great Kings (fingerplay) and Must Be Santa.
I recommend getting this, for the season, the mood and the kids to have their own Christmas music. ... Read more

Book Description

Are you a "Lord of the Rings" junkie? Can’t get enough? Want more?

J.R.R. Tolkien was a believer in Christ who wove his faith into his writing. His heroes fight a war against the forces of darkness—a war in which every decision counts. Walking with Frodo leads you through 9 pairs of choices—darkness or light, betrayal or loyalty, deception or honesty, just to name a few—and reveals what the Bible has to say about each. This young adult devotional will help apply those truths to decisions you make every day, sending you on a life-changing journey of your own.Are you ready for the journey? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What is this?
Never in my life have I heard of such rubbish. The Word of God is to be the only basic source for the study of God's Word--not a trilogy of fantasy novels. Many Christians are becoming so wrapped up in pop culture that they have trouble differentiating the difference between the fictional events found within The Lord of the Rings and the true, inerrant Word of God.

We need to get out of Middle-Earth and into the real world. You cannot find strength, guidance, and spiritual power in a fictional collection of stories, regardless of whether or not they are allegories of the Christian's journey.

"Walking With Frodo"?! Is this meant to equate Frodo with Jesus Christ? Reality check: Frodo was never real, Middle-Earth was never real, and all the events which took place within Tolkien's world never happened. Christ was real, however. The battles He faced and the battles we face are very real, and we therefore should not waste our time in thinking that this garbage will assist us in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars I received the book as a gift and was delighted!
Sarah Arthur's "Walking with Frodo" blew me away. I received it as a gift and thought it was merely an attempt to cash in on the LOTL craze. I was wrong. This book is an excellent devotional or small group study guide. And you don't have to be a total LOTL fan to "get it" ... Eminently readable and biblical without being heavy handed ... I loved it. Even those who don't consider themselves Christians can enjoy the thought-provoking and well realized chapters. Those who are "Bible-shy" can understand the author's points by following her references to The Lord of the Rings. Well done! I can't wait to see what Sarah Arthur does next.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Tolkien References, Little Substance
My motivation for reading "Walking With Frodo" was primarily an interest in Tolkien's work, rather than in Christian devotion. "Walking With Frodo", however, is not a critique or analysis of Tolkien from a Christian perspective. Rather, the author Sarah Arthur uses Tolkien as a jumping-off point to discuss Christian themes. The book is primarily aimed at young people.

Given even this purpose "Walking With Frodo" does not work well. Ms. Arthur draws comparisons between Tolkien's work and Christian thought that are thin and conclusory. She begins, for example, by describing Gandalf's battle with the flaming Balrog. With no more support than that, she immediately tells the reader that of course the parallel creature in Christianity is Satan. (Tolkien was once asked if his work could be compared to Wagner's "Ring" cycle of operas. Tolkien answered that both works contained references to rings and that was the end of the comparison. The Balrog/Satan comparison strikes me as similarly light-weight.)

Ms. Arthur draws other comparisons and conclusions in a similar vein, using very little Tolkien material to support them. I find it hard to imagine that any young person with a good grounding in Christianity to begin with, is going to obtain anything more in this volume that could not be gained merely by reading the Bible itself or participating in related group activities. If the purpose is to attract young people who are LOTR fans to consider Christian values, I fear that any young person intelligent enough to read and understand Tolkien's work will see through "Walking With Frodo" as a thin attempt to tie Christian ideas to the coattails of Tolkien's current popularity.

I note also that although Ms. Arthur identifies Prof. Tolkien as a Christian, she does not mention that he was Catholic. (Likewise, C.K. Chesterton is identified as a Christian in a footnote, with no mention of his Catholicism.) While Protestants and Catholics may enjoy closer relations now, we know that this was not always so, either in this country or in Tolkien's time in Britain. We should remember that it was not too long ago that some Americans questioned whether a Catholic could lead this country as its President. In a book aimed at young people who may not be fully aware of the circumstances of Catholic/Protestant relations, (and as one who has had a Catholic education through college) I would have liked to have seen the fact of Tolkien's Catholicism mentioned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, In-Depth Study
I only read this book of my daughter's out of curiosity. Imagine my surprise and delight to find much more than a "young adult" spin on the current LOTR fanaticism - and I highly recommend this book for all ages as a true understanding of Tolkien's subtle Christian message in his epic novels. Being a LOTR fan since the early 70's, this book helped me revisit the moral underpinnings of the story as well as my own Christian beliefs. Hats off to Ms. Arthur for a job well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Christians and LOTR fans alike!
I have used this book with my children as a devotional tool in our family. This book is fun to read. My teens and Tolkien fans, have found this to be a refreshing change from our normal devotionals. The author presents her ideas, plainly, yet with power and conviction. She has a nice honest, fresh approach, and is not self-righteous in her presentation. Her understanding of Tolkien's stories and his characters ring true and are very insightful. Her ideas mesh very nicely with Bible themes and scriptures. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (Mormon) I feel this book has a very valid universal message to all Christians. It has common themes that apply to every Christian in whatever faith they find themselves. This is an excellent read for anyone.
Many of the themes discussed in the book are applicable to every person trying to find a purposeful, and good path in life. ... Read more

Book Description

Renowned art historian and television personality, Sister Wendy documents the lives and works of over 40 of the world's best--loved saints with her unique blend of humor and spiritual insight. Her reflections bring to life illuminated manuscripts, miniatures, and icons, dating back to the seventh century. The works depict people of great spirituality from the humble humanity of St. Anthony the Hermit to the courageous dignity of St. Agatha and the virgin martyrs. Sister Wendy's eloquent text discusses the art, while also chronicling the lives and ordeals of each saint, their feast days, iconographic emblems and the subjects of their patronage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful pictures and stories!!!
Sister Wendy has put together a great book on Saints. I really enjoyed that she placed the saint's feast day, attributes, and what the saint is a patron to in the margins. Lovely stories and paintings. It's only fault is that it could have been much longer with more saints included.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great, but I wanted so much more!
A beautifully constucted book for as far as it goes, but we Sister Wendy lovers are left wanting more! If anything, it seems too small in scale. Like a delicious meal that we're only allowed to take a couple bites of. This is actually a great thumbnail introduction to saints for all us non-Catholics. The usual great paintings with Sister Wendy's wonderful, insightful commentaries. But we wish for bigger visual and literary feast. Everything about the book is small scale. Some of the illustrations should have been blown up to a larger size. We wish Sister Wendy would have gone on longer in her commentaries. At 93 pages, we wish for at least 100 more. She shouldn't have limited her selections to paintings from just one Italian exhibition. For all its brevity, I highly recommend the book. Lasty, don't pass up any chance to snag a copy of the video version of this book which aired on PBS.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOD BLESS SISTER WENDY!
Sister Wendy Beckett is a gifted story teller and artist. Her delightful paintings and her wonderfully original expressions bring Catholicism to all readers. This delightful book is truly one of a kind. Sister Wendy shares her love for painting and her gift for this medium in this work. Her loving recounting of the accounts of saints' lives will touch, amuse and delight all who are fortunate enough to encounter this wonderful book.

Sister Wendy shows a light touch, a gentle approach to imparting her faith journey and the information she has gathered over the years. The bright colors emphasize the light, bright, upbeat tone of this wonderful book. I can't recommend it highly enough. This is truly a keeper.

God bless Sister Wendy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Little Book!
Sister Wendy's Book of Saints By Sister Wendy Beckett.
This is a beautiful little book (96 pages), all bright and shiny paper with brilliant colors that almost leap off the page. Sister Wendy, the nun who has made a trade mark out of her running in and out of art museums, has collected the images of saints to support both her love of art and her orthodox views on Catholicism. The book begins with St. Peter (Petrine privilege?) and works its way down to lesser-known saints.
With each portrait, Sister Wendy points out an interesting tidbit. For example, with the Evangelist, St. Mark, (page 17), Sister Wendy indicates that the artist has portrayed the saint forming a cross with his pen and his sharpening knife. She lightens the mood by describing the lion, in the painting, as resembling "... an imbecilic sheep gazing in wonderment..." at St. Mark. This lightening of the mood is intentional as Sister Wendy repeats it (page 24) when she describes the ox in St. Luke's portrait as "...an almost goofy ox".

Despite this levity, Sister Wendy comes across as quite serious about both the art depicting the saints and the theology of the saints she has chosen. In summary, I would be very happy to have this book given to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
If the rating had 10 stars, i would have given it 10. Sister wendy provides lucid and clear pictures and text, good book for all ages ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely series for the Christian Homeschool
I have been using this series as I teach my six chidren at home. The authors have done an excellent job of bringing us the best of the original McGuffy Readers, returning to the contents of the first series, not those later published under his name. My children are discovering a nobler time and way of life as they learn the basics with these fine readers. The study guide is simple to use with many practical exercises and examples. The only reason for less than five stars seems to be the quality of the paper and binding. In the noble effort to keep costs down, the durability of the product suffers. I am hoping for a hard bound edition. Should one appear, the publishers should be prepared for greater sales than the previous edition. Such excellent content deserves an equally excellent binding with the ability withstand being read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Demanding Lessons for Young People and Adults.
These are the original 1837 McGuffey Readers before the secular revisions, with slight revisions of archaic grammar. Four Readers and a Study Guide show you how to teach your children to reason cogently, speak persuasively, write clearly--all in a Christian framework. Each lesson has moral and intellectual content, and offers an impressive vocabulary. Words progress from 'learn,' 'keep,' in the early grades to 'assiduity, profligate, efficacious, calcaneous, penury, communition, execrated' in high school. Lessons are followed by spell/define exercises, and thoughtful questions. Ex.: "Is it not better to be industrious and possess a good name than to possess many riches?" "What is the effect of making public opinion the rule of life?" "Have we not reason to rejoice that we live where we may hear the glad tidings of salvation?" Each lesson begins with a basic rule of reading and elocution. Study Guide ties each original lesson to a biblica! l theme. There are 10 years of 36 weekly lessons (grades 1-10). Instructions on teaching reading aloud, public speaking, good writing habits, memorization, logic, love for language as one of God's gifts. Many famous authors like Blackthorn, Shakespeare, Bacon, Irving figure prominently. By the time a child begins the third reader he will have surpassed most of today's high schoolers. Mastery of the fourth reader puts him beyond most college students. Any adult can read the selections with profit. You'll be awed at what was once accomplished in American schools, and resolved that your children grow up with the same advantages. The lessons cover a broad range of worthy topics including history, geography, poetry, and virtue. These are just reading selections, however, and do not as such offer instruction in phonics or grammar. Some of the 19th-century perspecitves are quaint, even funny. These lessons are intended for Christian parents who homeschool their children. ! I'm happy to learn from them myself. I see the sublime ed! ucational value of these lessons, and see the great need for moral and spiritual training for young people. These lessons will provide those in spades. ... Read more
