5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
James and Deloris met in high school after attending a basketball game. They married on Feb. 17, 1963. Michael one of four children was born. The youngest son of the Jordan household, baseball was Michaels favorite sport. One day his father put up two wooden backboards and baskets and gave the boys a basketball. They called it the Rack. Michael practiced often to try to keep up with his brothers. When in high school it was recommended he attend a basketball camp known as a Five
Star Camp. Education was always important to his parents, they knew that unless he was a good student all of his athletic talent would go to waste. In the fall of 1981 Michael enrolled in the University of North Carolina. After playing for three years there was little left for Michael to accomplish. He decided to turn pro and on June 19, 1984 he was picked by the Chicago Bulls. He made history and won championships for the Bulls and won consecutive MVP awards.

I liked this book very much. It is very hard to shorten in length the information this book has given me about the life of this great basketball star.

The saddest part of the book was when they talked about his father dying. From what the police could piece together James had apparantley pulled of the highway to take a nap and was attacked by two eighteen year old boys. They were later arrested and charged for the murder of James Jordan. Michael retired to spend more time with his family.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book.
The number one sports writer for kids, Matt Christopher, writes about basketball superstar Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player ever. He covers his childhood, college career, his spectacular debut year in the NBA, his Championship years, and his current proffesional standing. Matt Christopher's easy-to-read style of writing makes this even better.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this book because it tells you about Michaels life
In this book you learn about Michael's life and his struggles and his sucsess. When he was young he always played basketball with his dad,James. As he got older he grew very close to his dad. His dad was his best friend. In 1992 his dad got murded and Michael was in shock. He quit basketball to be with his family. He joined baseball for awhile, but then he quit. He then went back to play basketball for his dad. I loved this book. It tells you to go for your dreams and never give up even if something bad happens in your life. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mia Hamm and How She Started
I would recommend this book not only to people who love soccer, but to everyone who enjoys a true story about a great athlete and role model. The story of Mia Hamm is basically about how she was introduced to soccer and how she follows her dream to be the best women's soccer player in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is really better than it looks like!
On teh field with Mia Hamm by Matt Christopher was a very goodbook. I didn't have a very good idea who Mia Hamm really was though. The only thing I know is a professional soccer player. 5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book
Boots Raymond is a boy that want to play quarterback for his team - there's just one problem - the coach says he's too heavy to play that position. The coach assigns him to right tackle. His brother, Tom, is actually the one that encourages him to play football because he wants to quit. His brother explains that it's good to play the line because you help the quarterback make the plays.I like this book because it's very exciting, and I understand how it feels to play a position that you don't like.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves sports or who plays tackle football!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough To Tackle
Tough To Tackle is a book about a boy named Boots, who wants to be on the Apollos football team. When he goes to the coach he said that he wants to be a quarterback, and the choach said that he was too heavy. His brother was in the war and "Boots" wrote to him about how he was playing the line. Will he quit?Read the book Tough To Tackle to find out.
I read the book Tough To Tackle because I like reading about sports.I also like reading Matt Christopher books.Once I started reading it I couldn't stop.I suggest that everyone should read this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tough to .... Read
This book was just pages and pages on details about 4 football games (plays called, players names)The actual story, about a boy who doesn't know if he wants to play or not because he's a tackle and not the quarterback encompassed about 10 pages of the book. The moral is a good one but it is just too difficult to get through 20 pages at a time about how much time is left or who ran which way.I know quite a bit about football and still wasn't interested.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough To Tackle
Tough To tackle, by Matt Christopher, is one of his books about sports. This type of book is a realistic fiction book so it's not true but it can happen.

This story takes place on a football field and happens from the months of September and October. Matt Christopher helps us know the characters by telling us what the characters do and how they act. The major conflict is that a boy named Boots Raymond really wants to play quarterback for his team called the Apollos, but Coach Hayes said that he's too heavy to play quarterback so he puts him on right tackle. Will Boots ever improve on his position? Matt Christopher's writing style interest me because he likes to write about sports all the time.

This book would be great for 9-11 year old kids because this book is interesting and I would recommend it.I'd give this book a 4/5. A person that likes sports would like this book. So to find out if Boots will ever improve on his position, go get this book now at your local library.

5-0 out of 5 stars george salerno's book review
I like this book because i like baseball and i also like Derek Jeter. This story tells how Derek Jeter wanted to be the yankees shortstop it shows how he had to acommplished his goals by going through different obstacles in his way to make it to the major league.one of the obstacles was when he got drafted in 1992 but did not play until 1995. this book also talks about his great awards like becoming the american league rookie of the year.he also won the world series a couple of times. before Derek Jeter played for the yankees the yankees did not win a world series in 15 long years.so Derek Jeter is one of the big reasons that the yankees have been winning the world series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Derek Jeter realizes his dream of playing SS for the Yankees
As with other juvenile biographies in the Matt Christopher "On the Field/Court with..." series, this look at New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter emphasizes work ethic and family life as much as it does achievements on the baseball diamond. Since Jeter dreamed of being the Yankee's shortstop since he was a little boy, the first half of the book follows the "dreams come true" motif, while the second half of the book, covering how Jeter's Yankees won three World Series in his first four seasons in the Major Leagues comes under the "succeeding beyond your wildest dreams" heading. In relating key moments for Jeter at bat, on the bases or in the field, there is an admirable attempt to provide the details and not merely refer to things you might remember having seen on television. But there is always something of an educational purpose behind these sports biographies, so young readers will also learn that despite all his talent, Jeter had to work very hard to become a baseball star. Being considered the top high school player in the country does not mean you are ready for professional baseball, even at the lowest minor league level. Young readers will be informed to learn that Jeter's fielding style and batting swing had to be readjusted to make him a better player. They might also learn something from the relationship he enjoyed with his parents and his attitude towards people and school, as well as towards sports, that make him such an admired sports figure.

I believe this biography is written by Glen Stout, although it is copyrighted by Catherine M. Christopher for whom Matt ChristopherTM is a trademark. It only sounds confusing. One of the fun thing with these books is that they are not written "down" to the level of their readers. You should always keep an eye out for words that will send kids running to their dictionaries. In this book the biggie is found in the following sentence: "Near the end of the season he magnanimously offered to move to third base so Derek could play shortstop for the varsity." Other titles in this series look at Kobe Bryant, John Elway, Wayne Gretzky, Mia Hamm, Lisa Leslie, Tara Lipinski, Sammy Sosa, and Tiger Woods to name but a few. "Matt Christopher" is, by its own admission, the number one sports series for kids and based on the few books I have read to date, I have no reason to suspect there are engaging in hyperbole.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
The Team That Couldn't Lose by Matt Christopher is a very interesting book. The characters are Coach Kash, Chip Chase, and the rest of the Cayugans football team. Mr. McFall, an old player who played 60 years ago, has lost his old playbook because his wife sold it. A boy named Danny Livenmore bought it, and was sending plays to the Cayugans.
This book is a must read! It has a good author because he is a very young sports writer. He will probably have some good books in the future.
Matt Christopher is a former sports magazine seller. Also he worked at General Electric. And is a young sports writer for kids. Keep an eye out for more books by Matt Christopher.

5-0 out of 5 stars The winners!
A Review by Erik
This book was an interesting story about a kid's football team that was supposed to lose every game, but they mysteriously get a new play that they used to help them.

Jasper was an old man who recognized the plays. He said they used them over 60 years ago when he was in high school. Chip, the quarterback, asked the high school coach if he was giving them the plays, but he said no.

Every week they got a new play and practiced it. And every week they won the game. Jasper, chip the coach, and the other kids on the team wanted to know who was sending the plays to the coach. They tried and tried to see where the plays were coming from, but the only person who knew wouldn't talk about it.

The characters are like real kids and very interesting. The coach doesn't know a lot about football but that part of what makes the story interesting.

The book is interesting and doesn't get boring. The main story talks about the football games and kids. But also talks about the mystery of who is sending the coach the secret plays and where did these plays come from.

The worst part about the book is that the Author led part of it get boring because parts of the book drug on too long, especially in the middle. But most of the time it was fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short But Sweet

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
Matt Christopher is one of the best baseball writers for young readers out there. This is another notch in his belt. Pick this up.

5-0 out of 5 stars great moments
I found this book to be very good. Its reading level is 9th grade or so but that didnt stop this 41 year old from enjoying it. The book talks about 9 great moments in baseball and shares a few interesting perspectives on the game. Every fan should know of these charming and touching moments. If you love the game check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nine great baseball moments from Wambsganss to Abbott
Matt Christopher's "Great Moments in Baseball History" is an interesting collection of nine stories stretching from Bill Wambsganss unassisted triple-play in the 1920 World Series to Jim Abbott's no-hitter in 1993. In between young readers will learn of the day Babe Ruth hit his final three homeruns, Joe Nuxhall making his major league debut four days after D-Day at the age of 15, the catch Willie Mays made off of Vic Wertz in the 1954 World Series, Ted Williams hitting a home run in his final at bat, Reggie Jackson's three home runs on three swings in the 1977 World Series, Dave Drevecky coming back from bone cancer to pitch again in the majors, and Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run in the 1988 World Series.

This is a rather diverse collection of great moments, four of them coming in the Fall Classic and three representing the final great moment of a player's career (as Dravecky's ironically turned out to be; there is an additional irony given the epilogue to Dravecky's story and the fact the final story here is about Jim Abbott). Certainly young readers will want to identify with being a big league picture while still basically a kid when they read about Joe Nuxhall. If there is any sort of theme to these nine stories it would be that, as a general rule, then tend towards the inspirational, with several of the players overcoming physical limitations such as being old (Ruth and Williams), having bad legs (Gibson), having a bad arm (Dravecky), or having only one hand (Abbott).

These are certainly baseball stories that young fans should know about, because they are part of the game's lore, which is one of baseball's greatest aspects. If young fans have never heard of Bill Wambsganss or Joe Nuxhall, or do not remember Dave Dravecky or Kirk Gibson, then this book will fill in the gaps in their baseball education. For me the best stories in the book are those that focus on a specific play, such as when Christopher explains everything Wambsganss was thinking before he made his unassisted triple play, everything pretty much everybody in the Polo Grounds was doing when Mays started running after that ball, or the details of Gibson's one time at bat in the 1988 World Series. After all, we know the bare facts of what each player accomplished, but it is the details that make the story come alive.

Finally, I want to note something interesting about the front cover of this book, which has Glenn Harrington's illustrations of the nine baseball players whose stories are related in this book. Both Reggie Jackson and Jim Abbott are depicted as California Angels although both of their great moments are from when they were playing for the New York Yankees. Meanwhile, Babe Ruth is shown as a Yankee although he hit his last three home runs for the Boston Braves. I am also pretty sure that Dave Dravecky is shown with an "SD" on his hat for San Diego instead of "SF" for the team he was playing with at the end of his career, the San Francisco Giants, but I could be wrong. I certainly have been before.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for young ball players
My boys (9 and 14) have read many of Matt Christopher's books. All are good, some are great treats. I gave a copy of "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers" to each boy on my baseball team last year. They loved it! This year I am giving each player a copy of Christopher's "Great Moments." I read this collection of great moments (an unassisted triple play in the World Series for example) to my boys and enjoyed every page. We re-read some of the stories they were so much fun. This is a must read for all young/new baseball fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Soccer Duel Masterpiece!
This book helps me really relate to my life. I am the left striker, my parents are divorced, but unlike the story it's my mom who usually can't make it to the games because she is blind so she can't drive. It's hard because when I move from house-to-house I have to move equipment too. This situation makes me feel bad because at my dad's house I have two stepsisters and a stepmom and my dad has to drive them everywhere and it sometimes make him feel like a taxi driver! This book is a real situation story and it is probably my favorite book in the series, though I also suggest Soccer Scoop! Ned Donovan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soccer Duel
Soccer Duel is a one-of-it's kind book. Compelling, fun to read, and fun to read about the battle for friendship as well as the championship trophy. Renny Harding started as a third string person but was put in when the first string broke his ankle and the second string was away that weekend. He was able to prove to people that he wasn't just a lowly third string player but a higher first string. Bryce McCormack has been the best all his life but when Renny comes in and beats his team he refuses to believe that he had met his match. He then trys to figure out Renny's technique by being nice to him which Renny takes as a friendship opportunity and that makes Bryce do some things that could ruin Renny's soccer career, permanently!

5-0 out of 5 stars Soccer Duel
Renny joined a soccer team but he was third-string so he watied till his coach let him play then he showed how good he was and became first-string. I agree with the auther about the book. My favorite part waswhen Renny did a bicical move. I liked it because the author discribed it very well. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes soccer because this book is based on soccer. I tought it was really good.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is pure soccer
I think that Soccer Duel is a very good book. It has a lot of soccer details, and also a good plot and good characters that you can relate to if you are a serious athlete. I can relate to Renny because I play striker for my team, i just moved, and my parents are divorced also. For anyone who wants a page turner, read this book. ... Read more
