Who else but a member of the Moffat family could, during kindergarten recess, accidentally hitch a ride out of town on a boxcar? Or wind up trapped in the breadbox outside the delicatessen store? Or kindly offer to escort the Salvation Army man to his destination--only to accidentally bump him out of his own horse-drawn wagon? The Moffats is a paradigm of old-fashioned family fun. Four children and a hard-working widowed mother live together on New Dollar Street in the village of Cranbury. Their seemingly quiet lives are studded with almost daily unexpected adventures, with droll results.

This charming book has been making readers smile for over half a century. It reflects a gentler era, when the jolly chief of police had time to sit on the curb to hear a little girl's "crimes" and a little boy's escapade on a train was not cause for media panic, just a simple redirecting by the agreeable engineer. Eleanor Estes, author of the Newbery Honor book The Hundred Dresses, and Caldecott medalist Louis Slobodkin (Many Moons) make a lovely team in this story of benign humor and sweet times. Title: The Moffats

This book, the Moffats, is about a family of five. There is a mother and four children. Each of the children have their own special talent to make a basic job or activity into a bigger and more fun adventure. With their mischevious ways, going anywhere is fun. The children are Sylvie, who is the oldest, Joey, who sometimes think he is very superior, Janey, who has her own creative ways to seeing things, and Rufus, who can create trouble everywhere he goes. For example, they make a big deal about them having to sell their special house on New Dollar Street. They were able to think of so many ways from stopping people to buy, since all the Moffats thought the house they were living in was better then the others because they were able to see the whole street at one glance.
I enjoyed the book because it was very fun reading about the Moffat children making all kinds of mischievious problems. It was funny to see how Janey would be amazed with such little things. For example, in the first chapter, it qouted,"Jane could not take her eyes from her mother's hands. They had a way of doing things, peeling apples, sprinkling salt, counting pennies, that fascinated her". Janey was amazed at the way her mother did those simple tasks. Usually nobody really pays much attention to those small actions, but Janey sure does!

Another qoute is,"At last they were off, with Rufus in one of his every day sailor suits". When you first read this quote, ti may not mean much, but if you understand the background of that chapter, it will have more meaning to it. It was a Sunday morining, and the Moffats were all dressed up and ready to go to cghurch. While they waited for mother, Rufus had foolishly climbed up on the hitching post. Well, a naughty boy named Tom Frost, rode by on his bike and pushed Rufus to the ground. So Rufus had to change into one of his everyday clothes because that was the second time that happened all on the same day.

I didn't really have a favorite part because I enjoyed reading about all the adventures the Moffats were in. It was very enjoyable reading about the creativity that the Moffats had to create all the adventures. They make life very interesting for themselves, and always made the best in a situation, even if the situation may be unpleasant, like whenrufus got ill and had a mild case of scarlet fever. I recommend this book the readers who enjoy humorous and heart-warming stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Creative Trouble
I read The Moffats for a book report for my class []. Even though the Moffat family get into lots of trouble, they end up having a good time anyway. The book reminds me of the Great Brain series because they use a plan to outwit...sorry, can't give it away!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greats
Only Kipling's Jungle book, rivals this as the classic talking animal book for children. With his beautiful prose, Grahame evokes laughter, suspense, pleasure and even awe. Water Rat, Mole, Badger, Otter, and the insufferable Toad quickly gain our interest and sympathy. If you buy it to read to children, beware! You may not be able to resist reading ahead a few chapters after you put them to bed. This is a book not to be missed. The scene in which Pan appears as the animals' protector inspired a song by Van Morrison, and a mention in Jane Goodall's book, A Reason for Hope. From it a child of any age will get fun, wonder, and a demonstration of the beautiful possibilities of the English language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charm
Kenneth Grahame wrote this for his son and published this in book form in 1908. He has simply created a masterpiece, not just in children's literature, believe me many adults read this one with pleasure. The chapters follow the doings and adventures of Mole, Rat, Badger, and of course Toad. The prose is lyrical at times, the stories hilarious, and charm and wisdom flow from Grahame's pen. There has been many illustrators for different editions of this over the years. I like Rackham and Shepard and recommend the editions that have one or the others illustrations, or get two copies of "The Wind in the Willows" and you can have both of these fine illustrators work to enjoy. I read this book when a child and I come back to it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A primer on friendship
The Wind in the Willows is a delightful children's classic that touches upon many things; wonder, pastoralism, but most of all friendship between individuals very different from one another. One of the hallmarks of this classic is that the adventure stories remain entertaining to this day. A must read for any child.

1-0 out of 5 stars Check your Text
In response to the 5 star reviewer, I encourage her to check her text's publication date. I used the Scholastic version of The Wind in the Willows for years and up until 2 years ago it was an unabridged version. That older version has been replaced by the Miles version, however, which is not unabridged. I discovered this by accident when I ordered it for my classes--believing I was getting the old Scholastic version--and found that the version my students received bore little resemblance to the one I had. Hence my warning about this text. The Miles version is NOT the one Scholastic used to offer and it IS drastically altered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Uneven Version
"Wind" is the charming story of four friends living near the river bank - Mole, Badger, Rat and Toad. The story follows their adventures in the Wide World, and how true friendship keeps them together through "thick and thin."

Unfortunately, the story loses some of its appeal in this video version. It tells the tale well enough, but it just doesn't have the feel of a "classic." Sometimes, you have to read the book to fully appreciate it!

Good, not great. Three stars. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was Wanting
I bought this on cassette to entertain my 4-year-old during our 30-minute ride to school in the mornings. It was a complete failure, but to be fair the fault is probably my own ignorance of Aesop's Fables. The stories are VERY brief-- just enough to set up the moral at the end, not enough to set up any drama or catch my 4-year-old's interest. The morals themselves are worded in old-fashioned and/or very sophisticated language and are pretty much incomprehensible to this age child.I could perhaps see having this in book format and reading one or two stories at bed time, but for my needs the cassette at least is pretty useless. We'll be going back to the Jim Weiss stories on tape (which we've quite enjoyed). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Best Way to Hear Beatrix Potter Read!
Our elementary school library owns a previous edition of Claire Bloom's recordings, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit and other Beatrix Potter Stories," which is out-of-print, and has obviously been replaced by this larger collection.

This past week, since I had a sore throat, I played Bloom's fine reading of "Peter Rabbit" for all the primary classes that came to library. The students sat spellbound as we listened and I showed them the classic (but small) illustrations that generations have come to love.

At first, I feared that Bloom's British accent might be a distraction for the kids, but they got so caught up in the story, they hardly noticed. Personally, I think listening to Beatrix Potter this way is the most fitting introduction to these wonderful tales and her delightful fantasy world.

I hope that this anthology will be available on CD soon, as that's what would prompt me to "upgrade" my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Claire Bloom's reading of Peter Rabbit
I owned this recording on vinyl a child.(I still have it, even though I don't have a player.) It was one of my favorite things. Claire Bloom's reading makes these tales come alive. I purchased the tape for my children. I would recommend it for long car trips and nap time! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Read the REAL book,(...)
I read this a while back, and it was HORRIBLE!! I haven't read the REAL version, but this one was horrible. The rewriter wrote this book like it ewas for 5 year olds. They took out all the action and stuff, and I read it in a day! Don't read this book before you read the real version! You'll never want to read Jack London again!! It was a wretched remake. They say on the back of the book something like, Suspense! Action! Fighting for his life in the Wilerness! Kill or be killed! Yeah.. right, The franklin series is better written!I mean, White Fang got out of the Bulldog scene Way TO EASILY! I almost fell asleep. I mean, right now Im wondering, Why did I even FINISH the book. I'll give points for the illustration, but this is NOT what Jack London intended his book to be. He wanted it to be a thrilling, heart stopping ation, life or death! Whoever wrote this book...I can't believe this remake of the book was EVER published! This book shows that wolves aren't bad at alll, but it gives them MUCH to whimsey, they are WILD ANIMALS! Sure, it shopws that you can be friends with the unlikely, but they made it look like it was the average puppy! (Don't get me wrong, puppies are sooooo cute and cool! But this book was TERRIBLE!!)I LOVE Wolves, but this is gonna make them look dumb, they are intelligent, beautiful, but deadly creatures, and THAT is what Jack London intended White Fang to desribe wolves as! Spare the wolves some humiliation, and DONT read this book, read the real one!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Part wolf, part dog, part terror, can White Fang change?
I read the book White Fang by Jack London. The book starts before White Fang is born. His mother, Kiche, who is part dog part wolf, is living with a pack of wolves that are starving. The pack is stalking a small group of humans. After their famine ends three male wolves fight for Kiche. The old, wise, and battle scared wolf who has one eye wins the fight. In the spring Kiche finds a den and has a litter of puppies. All have a reddish tint like their mother except one that is all grey. One Eye looks for food, and for a while he keeps bringing food home, but they go through another famine. Of the puppies only the grey one survives. As he grows he learns a lot about the rules of the wild and about feast and famine. One day as he is going to get some water he stumbles upon humans for his first time. He tries to fight but he is hit in the head. He yelps and his mother comes to the rescue, but one of the men realizes that Kiche is a dog that ran away a few years ago. He yells her name and she obeys. In his years after being a free pup, he is trained to be a killer. One man sees White Fangs intelligence and nobility. Can he train White Fang to trust and love a man?
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs, wolves, or just the outdoors. Jack London uses descriptive words, and paints a picture in your mind of what's happening. This book is full of excitement, and will keep you reading until the very end. White Fang will not disappoint you!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I ever read
This was a great book I would recommend this book for dog lovers and wolf lovers from all ages. It shows how White Fang grows up and is brought up in the world by his masters and the wild. As he struggles to determine good from evil, right from wrong it is a great adventure for White Fang and others.

This book is about a half-wolf half -dog called White Fang. This story starts out before he was born. When his father and his mother are in a starving wolf pack they are forced to eat dogs off of a sled team that was traveling to a town. Every night White Fangs mother would come into their camp and lure one of their sled dogs away from the camp. The pack would eat the dog, and they did this until there was no sled dogs left then, ate the two remaining unarmed men. One day White Fangs mother and One eye his father, leave the pack to hunt on there own. They then have puppies but there was not enough food to support them all, so all the puppies but one died. White Fang was the only survivor. Soon after his father dies in a fight with a lynx, White Fang and his mother have to live on their own. In this time White Fang learns about the wild, how to kill and get meat. Then one day a tribe of Indians discovers him and his mother. White Fang's new master was his mother's old master and White Fang is forced to live in the camp with his mother. There was no warm welcome for White Fang. The older puppies would always fight him and hurt him on purpose. They soon take away his mother and he receives sever beatings from his master. When he turns one, he is put on a sled team alone with other puppies and they journey from town to town trading fur and other goods. He is then later sold to a greedy pit dog owner Beauty Smith. White fang is then forced to fight as a pit dog, he has to kill or be killed. He wins many battles against other pit dogs but when one match almost costs his life he then is found by a new loving master Weedon Scott. Weedon Scott tames White Fang and show him the true love of a master.

Book Description

This year, as in other years, Lily has planned a spectacular summer in Rockaway, in her family's cozy house on stilts over the Atlantic Ocean. But by the summer of 1944, World War II has changed almost everyone's life. Lily's best friend, Margaret, and her family have moved to a wartime factory town, and worse, much worse, Lily's father is on his way overseas to the war.

There's no one else Lily's age in Rockaway until Albert comes, a refugee from Hungary, a boy with a secret sewn into his coat. Albert has lost most of his family in the war; he's been through things Lily can't imagine. But when they join together to rescue and care for a kitten, they begin a special friendship. For Lily and Albert have their own secrets to share: they both have told lies, and Lily has told a lie that may cost Albert his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Lily's Crossing was a good book.It was a good book because it described things well. This is what Lily's Crossing was about.

Lily is a little girl who lives in Saint Alban's. She is 12 years old. In the summer she goes to live with her grandma in Rockaway, NY.She has to play the the piano because her dad bought her a piano to play. She doesn't like the piano. Right now her dad is in the World War 2. He is an engineer. He is not going to be home until the war is over. Lily really misses her poppy. Her best friend Margaret has to move because of the war. She has to go with her father and her family because her dad got transferred with his job. In the book, Lily meets a kid named Albert.

In order to find out what happens next, you will have to read the book. I would recommend this book to you, because it is really good and exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Friends Forever
Lily's Crossing, a popular Newberry Honor Book, is wonderful for readers of all ages. Patricia Reilly Giff brings the whole story to life with her amazing adventures and her remarkable characters. Lily, an eleven-year-old girl with a life full of happiness, is living through the tough times of World War II. Her father has to move away to help strengthen America in the war. It doesn't end there! Every summer Lily goes to the beach with her friends but not the summer that her father leaves. Lily's best friend has to go away with her family because her family has to help out with the war. Just when Lily thinks that her life is ruined, she suddenly meets a boy named Albert. They became best friends, but can they stay out of trouble with her lying? Will Lily say something that can cost Albert his life?
This book is highly recommended because it shows just how important friendship can be. Lily is an amazing girl who shares her wonderful world with everyone. Her story can help many people during rough times with friends because she teaches people never to give up on friends. When Lily realizes that her best friend must move away, she feels miserable! She and Albert have their rough times at the beginning, but in the end, they become best of friends! The book also presents life during World War II. It presents the reader with a whole new world in the little town named Rockaway, New York where families and friends become close knit and help each other out. Also, by inviting everyone over to dinner. The war helps Lily become closer to her friends and family during these rough times. It also helps her to become trustworthy with her friends and to stop lying to everybody.
Lily's Crossing should definitely be at top of the list of best novels because the reader will feel a part of an unforgettable world. So me people may see Lily's Crossing a very mellow and sometimes boring book. Despite these views, the reader is bond to feel a connection to the characters life experiences! Even if Lily's Crossing isn't the number one book to many people, there is definitely a whole lot to learn from this little girl, for example, what it was like to live during World War II. It also can help many people understand who true friends are and how powerful friendship can be.
~ Once reading this book, it will change the readers life forever ~

3-0 out of 5 stars Lilys Crossing
Lily's life is not the best. Her father is at war, and she has to move.
She has no friends until she meets Albert.
Lily has told many lies, but now she has told one that may cost her a friend. Lily has two major events in her life; will Albert follow his heart, will her father return?

4-0 out of 5 stars Lily!
While on the yearly summer trip to Rockaway, New York, Lily experiences some hardships. In 1944, everyone's life has changed. WWII has become familiar with every family. As soon as they get to Rockaway, Lily's father announces that he will be going overseas due to the war. She does meet a Hungarian refugee named albert. Lily and Albert turn out to become good friends. She overcomes lying the summer of 1944. Patricia Reilly Giff makes this story very easy and interesting. I completely fell in love with Lily.

3-0 out of 5 stars I would give this book 3 stars
I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars because it is a good book but it is not as good as other books I have read. I also think it was not very detailed and there were parts in the book that didn't make sense. My favorite thing about the book is that Patricia Reilly Giff makes an unbreakable friendship between Lily and Albert.
One thing I think the author should have done differently is to have explained things a little better. My favorite character was Gram because she might have not shown her love for Lily but really she would do anything for Lily. Gram reminds me of my Godfather, Bill, who unfortunately was in a plane crash. My least favorite character was Margaret because she was very naughty and mean.
One part that really made me think was when Lily went to save Albert in the storm. It made me think "Would I do that?" and "What would I do in that position?"
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterful recording
I first heard of Odds Bodkin when he came to my children's school last year. This was the first tape we listened to and I will soon buy it. Bodkin's many voices combined with his gorgeous instrumental music give this recording a superlative, magical quality. My 12-, 10- and 7-year-old children were enthralled, and frankly, so was I. We could hardly wait until the next time we were all in the car so we could listen to the rest of the tape. Highly recommended.

This tape had my family enthralled for hours on a recent trip - we traveled to New York City and when we arrived at our friend's house, this tape was all we could talk about! It is a wonderful story by a truly talented man - thank you Odds Bodking for sharing your gift with us! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a classical story about a girl and her dog that get trapped in a twister. She wakes up in a magical land and asks how she can get home. They tell her she has to follow the yellow brick road. She meets people on her way to the Wizard. The Scarecrow needs brains, the Tinman needs a heart, the Lion needs courage and Dorothy needs to go home. They meet strange things on the way to The Good Witch of the South. I like the book because it's interesting and exciting and that's why I think you should read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
This story all started when a farm girl from Kansas named Dorothy Gale, and her little dog Toto got sucked into a tornado and landed in a fairyland named Oz. In Oz she meets a bunch of strange characters, a scarecrow, tin woodsman, and a cowardly lion. Together they go on a mission to see the wizard of oz by following the yellow brick road. Each one wanting a different wish. On the way to the wizard they come across multiple things. And when they finally got to Emerald city the wizard told them that they must first kill the wicked witch of the west if they want him to make there wishes come true. Eventually they succeed in doing that along with multiple hard things to do. After all that they find out that the wizard is a "humbug" and he grants everyone's wishes. Except for Dorothy's wich is for her to return back home. So now Dorothy and her friends go on another adventure to find the Good Witch of the South. Well they found her and Dorothy got back home along with her dog Toto, and she had what she needed all along in order for her to return home. Personally in my opinion I enjoyed the book better then the movie. I would recommend this book to anyone with a good imagination, because I kept imagining the story as I read it. The book has some drawings in it wich makes imagining things a lot easier, it has drawings of the main characters, villains, and some of the scenes in the book such as there journey on the yellow brick road. I would also recommend this book to anyone if the ages of 10 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic ...
For those of us who've seen the movie umpteen times, this retelling of the classic tale is actually fresh and worth the read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
This book is a wonderful childrens' classic, though for adults it might seem a little bit too fanciful. The same characters from the movie are in it (Dorothy, Glinda, the Wizard of Oz) but don't be surprised if you notice a lot of details in the book that aren't in the movie- they're both completely different. The book is complicated , and contains a lot of elements that are magical in nature, not to mention all the different races (there's even one made out of china!). I don't think I'd recommend it to a smaller child, but eight, nine, ten year olds would LOVE it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wondeful Wizard of Oz by Ryan Widner
This is a wonderful book by the famous author, L. Frank Baum. Dorothy gets whisked away into a strange land where most of it is pleasant, but the other half of this strange land is dark and creepy. Dorothy must follow the Yellow Brick Road to get to the City of Emeralds to ask the great and powerful Wizard of Oz to help her get back to Kansas. On the way she meets three new friends who come with her to Oz in need of something. The Scarecrow wants some brains, the Tin Woodman wants a heart, and the Cowardly Lion wants some courage. They travel a long way and meet many dangers including the Kalidahs, the Deadly Poppy Field, the Wicked Witch of the West's Castle, and the Hammerheads. But they find ways to get across these obstacles. Their wishes get granted; in a funny way that is. Dorothy doesn't get her wish granted by the Wizard, Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, grants her wish with Dorothy's silver shoes. Read this book and it is sure to make you laugh, make you cry, and even at some parts fill you with mystery and horror! ... Read more

An unforgettable account of betrayal, revenge, redemption, Focus on the Family Radio Theatre's production of Ben-Hur tells the tale of a nobleman who fell from Roman favor and was sentenced to live as a slave--all at the hands of his childhood friend, Messala. Once nearly brothers, any hope of reconciliation is dashed after Messala is seriously injured during a vicious chariot race won by the vindictive Ben-Hur. But what makes this adaptation of Lew Wallace's best-selling story unforgettable is the changed man Ben-Hur becomes after seeing Christ on the cross. Recorded in London with film-style sound, this action-packed production shares that compassion is the true path to redemption.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book ever!
I read this book in three days. I couldn't put it down. I can honestly say that Ben-Hur, without a doubt, is my favorite book.

It's about a Jew named Judah Ben-Hur living in Israel during the time of Christ. He accidentally "kills" a Roman governor. Judah was on the roof of his house and the Roman guy was below him on his horse in the street. One of the tiles on the roof of Judah's house comes loose and it scares the horse, who rears, sending the Roman flying off it.

Judah is accused as an assassin and is sent to work as a galley slave for life. On his way there, Joseph the carpenter and Jesus come into Jerusalem. Joseph is talking with Roman soldier when Jesus sees Judah, who is in agony (it's sweltering hot), and gives him water.

You'll just have to read the rest for yourself. It's definitely worth it! But I will tell you that later in the story is a really cool chariot race scene between Judah and his enemy, Messala. It's so awesome! I know you'll enjoy Ben-Hur.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and informative
This novel is the tale of a Jewish prince in the time of Christ. The main character, Judah Ben-Hur, has a series of exciting adventures that take him through the Mediterranean world as a galley slave, the son of a powerful merchant, a soldier, and a chariot racer; and all the time he is struggling with his own christian views. In all, this was a good book with well developed characters and good action; but while I was reading it I kept having images of Charlton Heston (who played Ben Hur in the popular movie) pop into my mind and generally ruin the scene. The other thing I didn't really like about this book is its portrayal of the cruxifiction of Jesus; but you'll just have to read it yourself. I have read most of the religous accounts of the time and this one takes a few liberties, and I had a hard time determining exactly what was happening at times. An interesting tidbit that is usually overlooked about Ben Hur is that the book was written by Lew Wallace, a general who fought for the Union in the American Civil War.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pure classic worth the Time and Money
This novel written by Lew Wallace in the 1870's, and published in 1880 is nothing short of a timeless classic. It's timeless because it has been a big seller ever since it was published 124 years ago. Because the story is rich in character, people from all walks of religion and life can appreciate this story set in a time of global religious turmoil. Ben-Hur is the story of a Jew's life-long quarrel with his counterpart and nemesis Messala, amid the Roman occupation of ancient Palestine and among the rise of the Christian Religion.

Brief Synopsis: As childhood friends-become-enemies, Judah and Messala always had a burning desire to over achieve each other. As tensions grew with the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood, the two parted ways only to meet one day under a very peculiar and dark circumstance. As a Roman Prince strode through the streets on his horse, followed by his royal guards and gang, Judah, on his home's rooftop, came flying out to see what all the hype was about. Upon his looking down at the Prince from the rooftop, Judah could scarce get close enough to the magical prince. As though kicked over by the foot of fate, a parcel of the rooftop was sent tumbling down toward the horseman sending his beast to run amuck. Then Roman Guard, Messala, in his final attempt to spite Judah Ben-Hur, quickly pointed his finger in the direction of the innocent Judah casting a glow of malice over him. Ben-Hur became nothing, and his life was reset anew, forever to surrender his soul to his captors. Now a slave, Judah, of the house of Hur, must redeem his life, and that of his family's name. He must rise above slavery and into poverty where he must begin his life anew. Quick is the rise of a true hero, one who knows defeat but cherishes freedom. Read Ben-Hur to find out how Judah's life long quest of redemption leads to salvation and conversion to Christianity and how the restoration of his name and life comes on the day Christ Himself is crucified.

Ben-Hur is the story of freedom, and how quickly it can be torn away from us. This story teaches you that you must forever and always be mindful of, and merit, your good fortune. To those interested in the history of Christ and the religious standoffs of the times, I would strongly suggest reading this novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revisit This Classic
While writing style of a nineteenth century author is very different from current novelists this book is a terrific story.I pulled my old copy off the shelf (published in 1914)and enjoyed it even more than when I read it fifty years ago. However, because the condition of the volume was in such poor shape I found the Modern Library edition and am most unhappy with the introduction by Mr. Allmendinger.Much of the plot was revealed and his criticism would certainly prevent some from ever reading the book.He stressed the sentimental and physical attributes stating,"...this appreciation of male beauty might seem homoephobtc-" I contend that this professor from UCLA is projecting his modern ideas and predjudices into a nineteeth century book where they were not likely to have entered into the readers mind. The story has all the drama and suspense and action that anyone would consider a good read. Enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aurora's Review
Ben Hur is a great book. It deals with Christianity and one man's jouney to finding the Lord. Ben Hur is a rich young Jewish man with a perfect life. Then his life is shattered by an unfortunate accident. He is sent to be a galley slave for a crime he did not commit. The rest of the book deals with his quest for revenge on the boyhood friend who betrayed him and his desperate search for his mother and sister. Though the book he moves closer to the Lord. Ben Hur is very long and not an easy read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, rich book
The artwork and the large font are beautiful. And I like the translation. It's rich enough to introduce some new vocabulary, without being so thick it can't be understood.

3-0 out of 5 stars Puss In Boots As A Folktale
In the story of Puss In Boots, a miller dies and leaves one of his sons nothing but the cat. This cat turns out to be quite clever and earns the favor of the King for his master. The cat also obtains land and a castle for his master and gives him the title of the Marquis of Carabas. The King becomes so impressed by the Marquis that he offers his daughter's hand in marriage, and the simple miller's son becomes a prince. The use of clever illustration makes this book an effective piece of folk lore. "Narrative Expectations: The Folklore Connection" discusses the basic pattern of a folktale. The article states that every folktale begins with the main character of the story being no different from or more special than any other character. Then, out of nowhere, the character is boosted into a "supernatural world" and all of a sudden he is moved up to higher society and viewed as a hero (67). This resembles the plot pattern of Puss In Boots, with the Marquis being the average character who becomes a hero. This jump to a higher level of society out of luck is strangely enough realistic in the twenty-first century. With things like inheritance, lotteries, and the stock market, a person of today could easily go from the poor miller's son to a "prince." However, this is not a common occurrence. The article also states that folklore "functions in part as an informal system for learning the daily logic and worldview of the people around us (71)." The author chooses not to use human characters to represent Master Slyboots and the rich ogre. He could have done this easily with illustration by making Master Slyboots a servant boy and the ogre a Marquis. Instead, he uses an informal style, placing animal characters in the book. This represents a higher level: Using animals in contrast to humans in order to show the differences in people as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasing Puss for All Ages
I regularly visit school classrooms and read aloud to children from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Finding books that appeal to more than one grade level is a challenge.

I have found that the pictures in this version of 'Puss' appeal immensely to kindergartners through third graders. (Fourth and Fifth grade children also like it, but are often embarassed to say so in a classroom setting!). Children who often have a hard time sitting still for a story have sat transfixed as I read this book, holding the pictures in front of them all the time and giving them lots of opportunities to check out the wonderful use of light and color. The illustrator uses a lot of wonderful yellow that is very appealing to young children and seems to draw them into the book. I love reading this book out loud both to see children's reaction and also because I love the detail and color in the pictures.

Reading this book aloud has also sparked some beautiful art work from young children.

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated edition of this famous tale.
This new translation of the "fairy" story first presented by Charles Perrault (1628-1703) in his Tales of Mother Goose in 1697 was illustrated by Fred Marcellino and translated by Malcolm Arthur. It was a 1991 Caldecott Honor book (that is, a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustrations in a book for children. The youngest son of a recently deceased miller receives a cat as his inheritance. He feels that he will soon die of starvation (after he has eaten the cat) since he has no other possessions. But, the cat convinces him to get him boots. The cat proceeds to find a fortune and a position for his young master.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is honesty always rewarded ?
Puss in Boots is a wonderful story. This book is so beautiful that is like a precious work of art. A great read aloud with exceptional illustrations. Children and adults adore it. Presenting this tale to children takes great thought though. Try to avoid the dishonesty, terrorism, and thievery and focus on resourcefulness, first impressions, and survival. Fred Marcellino is one of the top illustrators of our time. Wish he had a website! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Classic
I discovered this book on a library shelf when I was about 9 years old. This book as well as The Secret Garden have since gained permanent shelf space in my library. What a wonderful book this is.It gently handles the inequities of the British class system of the Victorian/Edwardian period and creates a classic heroine in the process. It's a fairy tale and a parable all rolled into one.Considering the story was nearly a century oldwhen I read it, this book will still be entertaining to any pre-teen girl you know who likes romanticism.A great gift for the girl in your life who has a vivid imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Good!!

this book is an awesoime book to read. If little girls out there like being a princess or acting like they have tons of money then you should read thhis book. When she arrives at this school she is treated like a real princess by giving her a maid and room service. At her 11th party she gets some really bad news and thatr changes her life. She not treated like a princess anymore she sleepes in a attic with a friend she made when she didn't live in the sttic. This little girl loves to make new friends, expestle the ones who are left out of things or don't have many friends. that is why i LOVE THIS BOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very beautiful idea.
I had wondered why many women had the desire to be princesses and queens.I still don't understand this.

But, this is a natural desire. To have everything they need and want and to stand by a man who is noble, wise, generous, and couragous.

This is no desire that is foolish or impossible.

A woman or daughter of God is promised these things.

Dream on and never give up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pooh Review by Rafael Velasquez
The house at Pooh Corner is a really good book everyone should read it .I read it for a class project I thuoght it would be a baby book but it wasn't. It was really funny, and it had strange words.I didn't know that pooh liked condesed milk, or that tigger lived with kanga and roo. I wish A.A.Milne had written more books about pooh the books he wrote about pooh were really funny. I wonder what would have happened if A.A.M. had written more pooh books maybe even a pooh movie. The books were really funny and I love how A.A.M. writes. Pooh makes the best poems i've heard. My personal favorite character is Tigger his attitude is kind of like mine. I woud reccomend this book a lot because it's really funny and the way A.A.M. gives live to the characters is really cool nothing like the disney one wich is almost boring

5-0 out of 5 stars Smile All Ye Who Enter Here
Attention: all cranky four year olds, five year olds, eight year olds and thirty-five year olds on long car trips.

Attention all parents burned out by reading The Pokey Little Puppy over and over again.

Attention cynics whose primary memory of Winnie-the-Pooh is the Dorothy Parker quote (from her "Constant Reader" column in the New Yorker) "Tontant Weader frowed-up".

This book is a treasure for all who hear it. There is gentleness and not a little wit in these stories. Contray to the book description above, the book is read by the late Charles Kuralt. His inflection adds much to the story. One senses that he is amused; but he is never condesending. Now I will always prefer Kuralt's version to my own bedtime efforts with my children. Charles Kuralt must have loved Winne-the-Pooh mightily. How lucky we are that he left this delightful gift behind.

5-0 out of 5 stars The One Book That Influenced Me the Most
I was participating in an on-line discussion on the subject of the single book that had influenced us each the most.

The book that first came to my mind was "The House at Pooh Corner". It seemed rather silly, but after considerable reflection I decided it was probably the correct answer after all.

The book was read to me by my Dad before I could read, and I still re-visit it occasionally fifty years later. In fact, I wouldn't be adverse to using it's ending as my epitath.

5-0 out of 5 stars What richness, what grandeur is so easily captured? :)
This classic is listed under the age group of four to eight, and as a Poohphile I am quite appalled that it is. Winnie the Pooh books have such wit, wisdom, and humor that gets better every time I read them. Their not just for children, they are for everyone. Over the years, Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo have become some of my dearest chums. I once heard someone say, or perhaps I read it, that "books are like dear friends, and who has too many friends?" I am quite inclined to agree with that statement. This book is a dear friend of mine and I hope that you shall make it yours. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Discovery
Upon looking for reading materials for my fourth grade class I stumbled upon "A House At Pooh Corner" by A.A.Milne. I leafed through it and ...fell in love with it! I have become A Pooh Fan!

Well they were immediately charmed by A.A.Milne's beautiful language, unique style and sophisticated humor. They read the book, demanded other works by the same author and completed a project about the book. The quintessential cautionary tale, Peter Rabbit warns naughty children about the grave consequences of misbehaving. When Mrs. Rabbit beseeches her four furry children not to go into Mr. McGregor's garden, the impish Peter naturally takes this as an open invitation to create mischief. He quickly gets in over his head, when he is spotted by farmer McGregor himself. Any child with a spark of sass will find Peter's adventures remarkably familiar. And they'll see in Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail that bane of their existence: the "good" sibling who always does the right thing. One earns bread and milk and blackberries for supper, while the obstinate folly of the other warrants medicine and an early bedtime.

Beatrix Potter's animal stories have been a joy to generations of young readers. Her warm, playful illustrations in soft colors invite children into the world of words and flights of fancy. Once there, she gently and humorously guides readers along the path of righteousness, leaving just enough room for children to wonder if that incorrigible Peter will be back in McGregor's garden tomorrow. Caveat: Now if you're in the market to buy "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", I highly recommend that you do NOT purchase the horrendous version illustrated by David McPhail. This interesting monstrosity takes a book that was previous perfect and renders it perverse.I am reviewing the original Beatrix Potter edition of this tale, but because Amazon.com doesn't like to differentiate reviews, I'm fairly certain that this review will also appear for the McPhail book as well. Please, dear readers, do not in any way shape or form purchase the McPhail version if you want the original adept "Peter Rabbit"!Where Potter is adept and charming, McPhail is syrupy and doe-eyed.Where Potter is subtle, McPhail is over the top.Where Potter succeeds, McPhail fails. To locate an original edition of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" click on the author "Beatrix Potter" as it appears at the top of this screen. That should bring you to a selection of choices, one of which is the original "The Tale of Peter Rabbit".Oddly, the only way to purchase that particular original version of the tale is to select her name.I don't know why.Call it a flaw in the Amazon.com system, if you will.

Now, why doesn't Peter Rabbit age?I'm not being literal here, people, so please don't inundate me with explanations that patiently explain that fictional characters in books cannot get old.I won't hear a word of it.Reading "Peter Rabbit" today is just as fresh and new an experience as it was one hundred years ago.Author Beatrix Potter created the story of Peter Rabbit for a young boy with whom she was acquainted.Using the novel idea of drawing animals as they appeared in nature, just in funny clothes and talking, her books are remarkable because she had a dual talent for both illustration and clever narrative. Now after all these years I opened up "Peter Rabbit" to see why I loved it as much as I did as a kid.And the fact of the matter is, it hasn't aged a smidgen.A remarkable and astounding feat for a story originally published in 1903.

Peter lives, as many of us know, in a large fir tree with his mother and his siblings Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail. His father was baked in a pie (a fact that many parents have decried as too dark for children, and that many children have shrugged at without a second thought).Though instructed by his mother NOT to go digging in Mr. McGregor's garden, he's a naughty little thing. His tasty trip is brought up short, however, when he stumbles across the farmer himself. In the course of their chase Peter loses his little blue jacket with the shiny brass buttons and must return to his mother (after a series of close shaves) without it or his shoes. He is promptly put to bed with a cup of camomile tea (a fate we non-camomile tea drinkers must assume is harsh) while his siblings eat the tasty blackberries they picked that morning.

Beatrix Potter claimed that though she was adept at illustrating animals, she had the darndest time (my words, not hers) drawing people. You will note, therefore, that Mr. McGregor is a bit of a featureless wag.The story was remarkable in that it was the first time (I believe) that animals drawn in a picture book actually looked like real animals.Peter is exactly the kind of bunny you'd expect to catch in your yard, except that he's occasionally wearing jaunty spring wear. The similarities in this tale to that of the Brer Rabbit tales of the American South is interesting but due to the fact that Potter was writing this story in 1903 Britain, she probably didn't steal the plot. The book is a classic in the purest sense, of course. If you can get a copy that is small (intended from the start to be the size that little hands could open easily) do.It's a beautiful tale that is as fresh and green today as it was when written long long ago.A classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must
I got this book when I was very young and to this day I still love it. It's a cute story about this naughty little bunny going into Mr. McGregors yard and getting into a big mess. I love the drawings and everything about it. A great book for the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic for adults and children
Four rabbit children are told to pick berries by their mother, who also warns the rabbits not to go near Mr. McGregor's garden.Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottaintale obey their mother, but Peter, the mischievous of the four rabbits, ignores his mother's warning and ventures off for some tasty food from Mr. McGregor's garden. While Peter is greedily eating some radishes, he is spotted by Mr. McGregor.Peter tries to dash out of Mr. McGregor's way, only getting further and further away from the garden gate. Will Peter get away from Mr. McGregor, and find his way out of the garden? What will happen when his mother hears what he has done?

Personal Response:
I have loved this story since I was little, probably because any child can relate to Peter's mischievous ways.I have not met a child who could not attest to getting in over their heads after doing something they were told not to do.Beatrix Potter does an amazing job illustrating this well known tale. She brings life to the characters with her beautifully detailed illustrations. The illustrations have soft lines and curves to give a pleasant fell to the story. The pictures go along with the pages of the story as well as adding detail to the reader's mind about the plot and setting. The reader can see the vastness of the garden by looking at Beatrix Potter's illustrations.
The author's ability to suspend disbelief is not very great, because of the nature of the story. This story is made to be a fairy tale, which is not usually believable to children or adults.Children are accustomed to talking animals in stories at the age they would read this book. However, the plot of the story is very realistic to the child. It is realistic because the child can relate to disobeying their parent, and getting into trouble of some sort. They can also relate to the punishment that Peter gets at the end of the story.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tale of Peter Rabbit
Peter Rabbit is one of four rabbits in his family. Very much curious as well as disobedient, Peter decides to wonder off into Mr. McGregor's garden. He has heard the warning given to him by his mother of what Mr. McGregor does to curious, wandering rabbits. Peter slips away from his brother's and sister's while they play in the fields and decides to see this wonderful garden. While in the garden, Peter fills his stomach with delicious carrots, lettuce and other various vegetables. While eating, Mr. McGregor finds the somewhat stuffed rabbit and chases him around his garden. Peter, realizing the mistake he made, only wishes to be free, that he might not make the same mistake again. This book is very well written and can capture the heart of even the oldest person. Filled with detailed pictures, Peter comes to life in this classic tale of tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my Nephew's favorite book
The pictures in this book are absolutely wonderful. It was my oldest nephews favorite book, his little brother also loves it, unfortunately after five years of hard use I just replaced it with a new one. This is the first time we've ever "worn out" a book!

If my two nephews could write a review, (they are boys, 5 and 2 yrs old), they would tell you that this book is a treasure! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An African American Experience
This is a beautiful tape telling the story of the African American experience. Ysaye tells her stories in her soft, clear, lovely voice. They are beautiful human stories where she simply speaks her truth. Her stories are very spiritual and children of all ages (I'm 50) will enjoy and learn from listening to them. There is pain as well as laughter. Ysaye has some important lessons to teach. There are also some lovely musical pieces woven in with the stories. I highly recommend this whole series of tapes by Sounds True. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed the story, beautifully produced tape.
We have just listened to the audio book of "Stickeen" produced by Mara Purl and thoroughly enjoyed the story! I have already told my daughter and she is anxiously waiting for my next "care package," because I told her I would be sure to enclose the tape of "Stickeen" so she can enjoy it also. The story was wonderful and it was so beautifully produced with music and sound effects. I will look for some of Muir's other stories to enjoy, especially if Haven Books Audio does some more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging, captivating and heart wrenching!
I found the audio tape to be a great source of entertainment. My imagination was captivated. It's a great source of family entertainment, personal journey and pure fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great entertainment when you're driving.
Our family loves to travel by car. In a huge state like Alaska, there's plenty to see, but not much to listen to on the radio, as stations are few and far between. One
