This trio of unabridged paperback miniatures of the classic Curious George titles is sure to please your favorite little monkey. Held together in a paper box, this compact set manages to get a large dose of curious primate into a small space--just what you need for long trips. Curious George is the original story, in which the Man in the Yellow Hat finds George in the jungle and brings him home. In Curious George Rides a Bike, George's antics on his birthday two-wheeler lead to a job in the circus. And Curious George Gets a Medal is the story of how a series of accidents leads George to become an astronaut. All three titles are from the original series, not to be confused with the inferior illustrations (and stories) that came out of the Curious George films. Since the appeal of the always-curious monkey is so intense and apparently so timeless, it's odd (dare we say "curious"?) that the one title to have aged badly is the first, with its very un-modern attitude to the capture of a jungle animal. But even if this bothers parents it's unlikely to be noticed by George's younger devotees. (Ages 3 to 6) --Richard Farr ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good books, but need to be sturdier
I bought this set because our family travels quite a bit; we live overseas. Our daughter LOVES the books--the content is a lot of fun. However, as far as being suitable for travel, the set's main advantage is only its size. It is nice to be able to slip the books in anywhere. However, the thin box soon began to fall apart, and the binding on each book hasn't held the back pages well. As far books to take traveling, I should have chosen something bound better, like a hardcover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classics in a small package!
Of all the CG's out there today, these are the ones I remember from when I was a 2-5 year old in the 1970's. My nearly 2-year old can handle these small books, and they are great for holding up and reading in bed. These may not be the books that you will pass on to your great grand kids,( paperback and small), but you will get great usage of them.

The stories are simple and well told about a little monkey ( actually a chimp, no tail, right :-) ),who explores new environments everyday. Everyone will read them from a different perspective.

My son likes them because CG explores all kinds of things. He has animals, boats, bikes, lorries etc, to point at and recognize from the real world.

I like them because, CG is just exploring, not trying to do things wrong, just like my son. Most of the things CG gets into, can be good if looked at from another point of view, you just have to look for that view. Its the same with children.

Even if some things may not be "politically correct", some thirty years later, your kids will ask you why, and you can explain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but small, books.
Our daughter loves her Curious George books (she's barely 2 years old) and particularly loves the illustrations as well as the stories that are narrated in these books. Our only concern is that the words in this miniature set are so small that it isn't practical to use these books to teach her to read. If this is of concern to you, then you are better off paying more money and getting the larger books, otherwise these books are great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for car trips!!
My 2-year old daughter loves looking through this set of books during car trips. The book size fits easily into the side of her car seat so we don't have to keep handing them to her.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Father Christmas
This book was originally published in 1940 and the end notes tell us that it was the last one written by Jean de Brunhoff before his untimely death at age 37. The story and line drawings were finished but the illustrations still needed to be colored. Jean's brother took care of that with the help of Jean's son who was only 12 years old when his father died. I like the fact that Jean's son had a hand in the coloring of this wonderful story of a father's love and special efforts on behalf of his children at Christmastime.
This book has all the lively and humorous characteristics of the other Babar the Elephant stories, the brightly colored, warm and friendly drawings of our beloved elephant royalty, the antics and adventures of the elephants themselves and of course, our hero, King Babar once again, saving the day, in this book, a most important day, Christmas!
Arthur, Pom, Flora and Alexander, the royal elephant children , together with their monkey pal, Zephir, write Father Christmas a wish list letter and are disappointed when they don't get a reply. This ultimately leads to Babar's realization that the Elephants' Country needs to be included in Santa's regular route, so he goes to heroic lengths to make his childrens' wishes come true. Babar and Father Christmas become fast friends and Father Christmas even gets to take a much needed rest in the tropical climate of Babar's country. The way de Brunhoff has drawn Father Christmas is quirky and jolly and rather different from the image we have of him today but entirely captures the essence of this wonderful holiday icon. If you have loved other Babar stories or if this is your first, you are sure to love it and make it a part of your Christmas tradition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas memories in the making
This book is so charming and gentle. It is filled with lovely stories of Christmases past. All of them have a message of the true meanings of Christmas: giving, loving, sharing, forgiving, and family. The stories are so simple and fresh in today's day and age. Lucy Maud Montgomery is a treasure in any child's library. This is no exception. There is a light warm feeling that comes from reading this book. There are enough stories to count down the days of Christmas with your children with a story each night. What a lovely way to wind down a day, and tuck them in with a warm feeling inside!

4-0 out of 5 stars Absoloutly Fabulous, darling!
This heart warming book is a fabulous book. It makes readers think that there're lots of generous people who can help you when you feel sad or if you think that Christmas or New YEar is not that exicting.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful, heart-warming book to be treasured.
This collection of Christmas and New Year stories full of the spirit of the season. It is a wonderful, heart-warming book to be treaured all year long. It lets it's readers know that at Christmas time, and at New Year's as well, anything can happen as long as their are kind and generous people in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm and wonderful book for any time of year
Fans of Lucy Maud Montgomery young and old will truly enjoy this new collection of short stories. This is what I call "comfort reading", about kinder, simpler times. As always, readers come to care about the characters and their situations. Even the two excerpts from Montgomery's novels that are included in this anthology stand by themselves very well. This book would be a wonderful Christmas present, but I read it in July and found it a treat for any time of year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm and wonderful read for fans of L.M. Montgomery
I was thrilled to find this book, because I have read everything else L. M. Montgomery has written. "Christmas with Anne" did not disappoint me. The characters were vivid and sympathetic and the stories were warm and fascinating. I read this book slowly to savor each story, and hated to see it end. Even the two excerpts from the "Anne" books which were included read differently in this volume and stood alone quite well. This would be a wonderful Christmas present, but you don't have to wait until the snow flies. I read it in July and still loved it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Montgomery's classic novel with photos from the series
I first read L. M. Montgomery's classic novel "Anne of Green Gables" after having stumbled across the Kevin Sullivan production on PBS. I then proceeded to work my way through all of the Anne books and everything else written by Montgomery that I could get my hands on (this was before everything got reprinted in paperback). The chief charm of this particular edition of "Anne of Green Gables" is for those who will always think of Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth as Anne, Marilla and Matthew. This storybook version, with a more than adequate condensation by Fiona McHugh, is illustrated with photographs from the exquisite television production, which captured the captivating charm of the novel. So what if Dewhurst is not as skinny as Montgomery describes Marilla or that Patricia Hamilton is not as large as the Rachel Lynde in the Anne books? I am one of those countless admirers who consider these performers to be the "real" characters from this beloved novel. I read one of the original reviews of "Anne of Green Gables" from way back when that complained Anne did not change over the course of the novel. Of course the point is not how much the imaginative red-haired orphan changes once she comes to live at Green Gables; the point is how she changes those around her. Who would not fall in love with the endearing antics of this glorious child, who comes from one crisis to the next with such dramatic and comic flair? That is why this is an enduring classic that we pass down to our children at the earliest opportunity. Whether you start with the television film or this storybook, be sure you enjoy both and eventually get to the complete original classic novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full of Life and Imagination
This book is a must for all Lucy Maud Montgomery fans...or anyone who enjoys a good read. Anne Shirley is full of life and imagination, making every page more exciting and enjoyable than the last. Anne's adventures through school and finding a family keep the reader interested with every page turn. It is a wonderful story and should be read by all. ... Read more

Book Description

Welcome back to Deep Valley!

Winona Root is almost eight years old. More than anything in the world, she wants a pony for her birthday. She wishes so hard for a pony that she's sure to get one--at least, that's what she tells her friends Betsy, Tacy, and Tib. It's only when the exciting day grows near that Winona begins to wonder: What if her father meant it when he said she couldn't have a pony?

In addition to her beloved Betsy-Tacy books, Maud Hart Lovelace wrote three more stories set in the fictional town of Deep Valley: Winona's Pony Cart, Carney's House Party and Emily of Deep Valley. Longtime fans and new readers alike will be delighted to find the Deep Valley books available again for the first time in many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another welcome trip to Deep Valley, MN
Thank goodness Harper has brought this Maud Hart Lovelace gem back into print! This book offers a glimpse of Betsy Ray's friend Winona Root at age 7, planning her 8th birthday party. Winona is such an outgoing girl that the guest list just keeps growing, and there is much merriment involved. Adult readers will be delighted to discover Winona at an early age, and I am reading this new editon aloud to my three year old niece who keeps begging for another look at all the Vera Neville illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice look at another B-T character
After many years, I finally tracked down a library copy of "Winona's Pony Cart," and I am glad to have read it. It's a nice look at Winona's home life at the age of 8, when the "main" characters haven't really encountered Winona yet. What a riot of a character she is! I've always liked her character in the rest of the series, so I was happy to get a peek into her life, meeting her sisters and parents. And she really is kind of a funny character, all on her own. I hope this book comes back into print eventually, I would buy several copies!

5-0 out of 5 stars This goes for all the "Betsy" books
When Maud Hart Lovelace first wrote the "Betsy-Tacy" series, did she know how much so many people, from children to adults, would love them? The series has at least one book that anyone of any age can relate to. 10-year-olds will love "Over the big Hill," high-schoolers will love the books about when Betsy was attending Deep Valley High, etc. And it doesn't end there! Even if you're not the age that Betsy was in one of the books, you can still love all of them! Maud has a way of capturing real feelings and experiences--even bad ones--and turning them into works of art. The "Betsy-Tacy" series really is a work of art, even if it was painted with a pen, and not a paintbrush.

5-0 out of 5 stars One more Lovelace book!
Fans of the Betsy-Tacy books will enjoy a look at Winona's homelife. Winona is having a birthday party and the guest list keeps growing! With Vera Neville's illustrations, this book is a joy! ... Read more

One sleepless night, Babar's son Alexander steps onto the terrace tolook at the moonlit sky. But it's not the moon filling the sky with brightness.Alexander is startled to see a luminous red and gold bird gliding towards him, clapping his beak: "Tash! Succotash! What are you doing here so late?" The youngelephant is delighted to discover that this marvelous bird is in fact a wizard. After partaking of the Succotash Bird's magical charms, Alexander bids himfarewell. The very next day, on a hike with his family, Alexander meets hisfine-feathered friend again... or does he? As the Succotash Bird warned him theevening before, "sometimes it's hard to tell friend from foe." This curiousaddition to the classic Babar series provides an interesting, yet somewhat oddlesson in recognizing that things are not always as they seem. Alexander'snightmarish education via the bad wizard is a bit harsh, with little to comforthim other than a lucky save by his mother and the good wizard.

Laurent de Brunhoff, building upon his father Jean de Brunhoff's original sevenBabar stories, including Babarthe King and The Story ofBabar, the Little Elephant, has created more than 30 books about theworld's most beloved pachyderm. Laurent de Brunhoff brings to life theadventures of Babar and his family with his tremendously appealing, looselycolored and outlined illustrations. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great New Babar Story
If you are like me, Babar stories are among your favorites. Hopefully, they are your children's favorites too. This is a new story from Laurent de Brunhoff. As much as I like the story, I must say that I like the illustrations even more. This is one of the most beautifully illustrated of all the Babar stories.

One night in Celesteville, Alexander (King Babar's and Queen Celeste's elephant son) awakens. Drawn by the bright light coming through the window, he walks out onto the terrace to look at the moon. But there is no moon. The light is caused by a beautiful red and gold bird with sparkling feathers. The bird says, "Tash! Succotash! What are you doing here so late?" Alexander replies, "I can't sleep." The bird says that he is a wizard, and asks Alexander if he wants to play parachute or swing-swing. Alexander doesn't know what either one is. He chooses swing-swing, and soon he floating in the air, swinging gently back and forth and left to right. Alexander loves it. The wizard eventually returns Alexander to the terrace and persuades him to return to sleep.

Since Alexander has had such a good time, he wants to know if the wizard will come back to play with him again. The wizard says that he may, but issues a warning. "But remember, there are good and bad wizards, and sometimes it's hard to tell friend from foe."

The very next day, the elephant family goes for a walk and Alexander spots another bird, this time a brown one, that says "Succotash!" And the adventure begins in a new direction.

The moral of this story is that life is full of right and wrong mixed together, like succotash is "lima beans cooked up with corn." Youngsters need to be on the look out.

All humans are inclined to draw patterns in their minds that may or may not be present. You have a wonderful time with a new friend, and expect that the next time will be exactly the same. But you may have met that person on the happiest day of his or her life, and the next time you see the person is the saddest. Also, because your aunt and uncle are nice, that doesn't mean someone else's aunt and uncle will be, too. I thought that this book was unusually good in helping a child establish a sense of skepticism and distinction, rather than extrapolating blindly from the last experience. If this lesson can be learned well, your child's life will be much happier and more successful.

Nice writing!

After you finish enjoying this story, I suggest that you think about where you and your child may be drawing false conclusions from incomplete or misleading evidence. For example, if you and your child went to the aquarium on a day when it was crowded and she or he was sick, perhaps you had a bad time and have avoided the aquarium since then. If so, perhaps you should try again on a not-so-crowded day when both of you feel terrific.

Look for the best and worst, and embrace the best!

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a nice story
This recent addition to the classic Babar series is somewhat less whimsical than the original set of books but enjoyable nonetheless. The pictures are nice and have the same spirit as the originals; my 6-year old boy likes the way that the pictures are drawn. However, the story is a bit choppier. The lessons are carefully and explicitly made: (1) be careful what you wish for as you might be surprised and (2) that life is mixed between good and bad just like succotash is mixed with beans and corn.

If you're looking for the classic Babar stories by Jean de Brunhoff, then this would be a second choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that can brighten my day (at any time!)
There is something about the Betsy-Tacy series that always fills my heart with warmth. Betsy and the Great World is no exception. At twenty-one, Betsy is on the verge of a great adventure. She embarks on a tour of Europe - when Europe was a new horizon for a young writer to see. Betsy soon discovers that she is growing up (she is courted by a dashing Italian during her trip abroad), but she can not forget her beloved Joe. Read this book and the rest of the series. They will take you back to a time when things were simpler.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing and amusing book.
Betsy and the Great World takes the Betsy we know and love--ambitious, loving, gregarious, lazy, and dreamy--and has her adventure through (and comment on) Europe just before World War I. The insights into what Betsy thinks of the German militaristic values, the European class system, and everything else are fascinating. The story is also funny and the characters likeable and interesting, making this a book to be treasured, and read over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Something Different
I was a bit disappointed when I opened this book up, and read the first sentence. I didn't think it was right of Mrs. Lovelace to just skip college, to think we missed it! So, I had to imagine college and Bob, and the relationship between Betsy and Joe.
Not only do you miss out on what happens in college, but it's somewhat odd to be going from high-school Betsy, to grown woman. I kept on wondering why there wasn't at least one book made about Betsy going to college.
Although I said this, I would still suggest reading this book, it's a great book, and Betsy doesn't change too much. But through the whole book I felt weird. It didn't matter how many friends and 'crowds' Betsy made, or how many admirers she gained. The original crowd just wasn't there.
But don't worry, Betsy is still pretty much the same, she makes friends, and there is quite a bit of romance in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
I'm kinda getting too old for this series, but I can't stay away from it. I'm a sucker for history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Betsy and I went to Italy
I have read "Betsy and the Great World" so often that I know much of it by heart. When I travelled to Italy this spring, and stepped into St. Mark's Square, I could hear the Harvard Man yelling at Betsy's "tourist trick" with the pigeons. And when I went on a gondola ride, Betsy and her Marco were in the gondola that floated by on the other side of the Grand Canal. Any author who can make her characters live so completely deserves to be read. 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in the Curious George series.
In this story George and his friend visit the zoo to see a new exhibit. George witnesses a zoo keeper feeding the seals and decides it would be fun to share his snack with the other animals. Because George can't read the signs by the animal cages he doesn't know that you should not feed the animals. After giving the zoo keepers a merry chase he is caught and told that feeding the animals things they shouldn't eat can make them sick. George feels bad and makes up for it by helping the zoo keepers with the new exhibit. Excellent story and introduces a number of different animals for children to identify. ... Read more

Book Description

To celebrate Peter's birthday, Frederick Warne is publishing new editions of all 23 of Potter's original tales, which take the very first printings of Potter's works as their guide. The aim of these editions is to be as close as possible to Beatrix Potter's intentions while benefiting from modern printing and design techniques.

The colors and details of the watercolors in the volumes are reproduced more accurately than ever before, and it has now been possible to disguise damage that has affected the artwork over the years. Most notably, The Tale of Peter Rabbit restores six of Potter's original illustrations. Four were sacrificed in 1903 to make space for illustrated endpapers, and two have never been used before. Of course, Beatrix Potter created many memorable children's characters, including Benjamin Bunny, Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddle-duck and Jeremy Fisher. But whatever the tale, both children and adults alike can be delighted by the artistry in Potter's illustrations, while they also enjoy a very good read. Because they have always been completely true to a child's experience, Potter's 23 books continue to endure.
