    Book Description

The statistic is staggering: As many as 50 percent of Christian students say they have lost their faith after four years in college. For far too many students, the transition from home life to campus life is traumatic--what begins as a University of Instruction often ends up being a University of Destruction...with long-lasting negative effects and no guarantee of return.

Relating his own experiences at Stanford, David Wheaton describes the three Pillars of Peril you will face in college-sex, drugs/alcohol, and humanism-and presents a game plan for victory over these pitfalls based on raising your spiritual GPA. You will also receive practical advice on dating, friends, choosing the right college, and how to get back on course if you have gone astray.

Headed to college? Already there? Let University of Destruction show you how to be an Overcomer on campus! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A Practical Gift for the High School Graduate!
What to buy that high school graduate who is a Christian? If the answer is, "Buy him/her a book," until now the option had been limited to saccharin, shallow devotional guides. With David Wheaton's "University of Destruction: Your Game Plan for Spiritual Victory on Campus," there is now an option that is relevant, penetrating, and practical.

Author David Wheaton has "been there, done that." From his own experience on the campus of Stanford University, from his research, and from his interaction with 1000s of young people, Wheaton has distilled three "Pillars of Peril" for the Christian on the college campus: sex, alcohol/drugs, and humanism. After identifying the perils, Wheaton creatively offers realistic guidelines for raising the college spiritual GPA in order to become a victorious Christian on campus.

Wheaton demonstrates his insight by not stopping at the "body sins" of college campus--sex, drugs, and alcohol. For the deepest, ongoing college peril is the "mental sin" or "faith sin" of the deconstruction of belief that systematically occurs on secular college campuses.

You know that a book is solid when both Sean Hannity and Dr. John MacArthur recommend it. They're correct. "University of Destruction" is an excellent gift not only for the high school graduate, but for her/his parents.

Reviewer: Robert W. Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians" and "Spiritual Friends." He is also the parent of a college junior on an elite secular college campus and the parent of a high school senior headed to an elite college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I could have used a mentor like this when I was a young adult! I am a parent of a high schooler and highly recommend this book. David does an excellent job of preparing the reader for the temptations of "Sodom" found on many college campuses (and many high school campuses as well). He teaches the reader how avoid the temptations by establishing the habits of a godly lifestyle. This book would be very helpful for any young adult ready to go out on his/her own, college bound or not.The same temptations are there in and out of college. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great book from a great author
I gave this book to my sister when she began attending college and she found it immensely useful. She has since bought copies for a few of her friends so they could learn from the knowledge in this book.
check out her website at tracimaynigo.com

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book really hits home. As a recent grad I have to say Traci touched on all the important points of surviving in college. Look up the book if you are about to go to college, or just need an uplifting book for freshwomen trying to survive their first year, good luck girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and fun guide for girls.
This book is written for college students by a recent college grad. I wish there were books like this when I went to college! Traci Maynigo covers what girls want to know about surviving college and what they might not know to ask. She covers the basics and more from packing lists, managing your finances, guys, surviving classes, and getting along with your roommates. Also included is pratical advice on dealing with depression, exercising, the party scene, and so much more. It would make a great gift for a any girl on her way to college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift!
I gave this to my neice as she went off to school, and she loves it. Before I gave it to her I leafed through it, and ended up reading the whole thing! Funny and instructive, engaging and no-nonsense, A Girl's Guide to College is simply a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Girl's Guide" an Incredible Book!
Traci Maynigo's "A Girl's Guide to College" is the best book for college women on the market, and one of the best guide's to college life I have ever seen. Maynigo's thorough examination of the college experience is remarkable, as she discusses everything from choosing classes to living with roommates to finding that special someone. She manages to keep a light and entertaining tone throughout without trivializing the importance of making the right decisions in college. But most impressive is her ability to discuss more serious issues like sexual harrassment and rape with an openness and honesty that really sets this book apart from previous "Girl's Guides". I highly recommend Maynigo's book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For ALL Book-Lovers, Not Just Aspiring College Students
Many different universities and colleges provided the author with the names of works they recommend or use in first-year English classes. I remember seeing the first edition of this book when I was in high school and falling madly in love with it. Unfortunately, it was at the public library and someone lost it a month after I checked it out. I am an obsessive list-maker and this adds fuel to the fire of my two passions, lists and literature. Not all the books listed in here are predictable, canonical works, either. I'm surprised how many are out-of-print, making the search for great reading material even more fun. One gripe: no comprehensive index. I may just make my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great source for finding something worthwhile to read
This book was written by my high school english teachers. It was published and I purchased it years after I graduated from college. I'm using the book as a means to measure how "well read" I am. Whenever, I'm at a loss of what more to read, I pick up this gem and find numerous suggestions. Thank you Doug, Michelle, and Patty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective teaching tool
As soon as my college prep and Advanced Placement English students start complaining about "ALL" the reading we have in my class, I break out this little gem and read a couple examples from among the 103 representative college and university lists contained within its pages. The book also offers the high school student a reading program with the goal of reading 100 books from among the lists by the time they enter college. It is a sensible plan with a simple form to chart one's progress. This book has a place in every college prep classroom and on every college hopeful's bookshelf. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars All information needed to score well
I admit that I am a grammar geek. I studied this book for hours, and had a blast doing it. The book has a diagnostic test, descriptions of the 3 questions types, essay tips for the 20-minute essay, the obligatory generic test-taking tips, and 6 sample tests with answers. I do wish they had included how to calculate your score for the sample tests, but at least there were explanations of every answer. I timed myself on one of their essay questions to make sure I would be able to complete it when taking the test and did one test-length set of multiple-choice questions. Most of their grammar review was clear. A book like this is essential for this test because the SAT II Writing tests formal English, which has some archaic rules that no one in their right mind actually uses. (Ex: "off of" is incorrect in formal usage). Even a person who speaks good English needs to study for this test. English, writing, and grammar happen to be my strong points, but without this book I'm sure I would have scored lower than the 760 I received.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
Outlines all the basic stuff you need to know to score high on the test. Correct grammar, correct writing style, and many other things are discussed. After giving it a cursory glance, I learned a few new things I hadn't known before. My score of 660 will most likely go up to at least 750 after using this book. Still, the book could be better. Like most other books, it is boring, and it does not present the information in a way that will stick with you forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Good
This book was great. The insruction was easy to follow. The best part about this book was the examples- they used real sentences instead of "Jack and jill had tea" to prove their points in grammar.Themultiple practice tests were just like the real thing!BUY THIS BOOK! ... Read more

Keep it simple stupid. That's what they taught me at college. Simplify the problem. Complicate the problem. Draw an obscure diagram. Simple advice but good advice.

But you don't believe you are stupid. You are angry that somebody called you stupid. You may be just the right person for this book. Because a smart man acknowledges that he really knows very little. Because he wants to read every book in the library. And there is so little time. So you are like that. You don't really need this book.

It is the guy who doesn't want to be called stupid that will need it. You will learn how smart kids think about college and the tricks they use. And the ones they don't. It is all about college in the 1980's before the Internet. Because study is something you can learn without complicating it by using a computer. Learn all the mistakes you could possibly make and how to avoid making them.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very nicely done book
At first, I thought finishing this 600 page book would be a real drag, but it was actually very enjoyable to read. This book provides excellent information on both the SAT and PSAT.All the information in here are very easy to understand and are written clearly. After going through this book I knew EVERYTHING there is to know about the SAT. The book includes 7 full length practice tests, and analysis of the answers.Lessons are broken into different sections for clarity. But, I feel some of the advice given in the book can be sort of misleading, and some of the strategies doesn't really work that well in actual tests. But that is my personal view. I give it 4 stars because like I said some of the strategies aren't good. But this book is the perfect SAT prep course for beginners.I recommend it to everyone who is just starting to review for the test, but anyone that's not unfamiliar with the basics of the SAT should pass on this book and go for a more "advanced" prep course. ... Book Description

If you pick up this book, you want your college or university application process to be smooth and successful. This process is a journey that is bound to change your life forever.

Successful journeys begin with visions. Without a vision for your life and goals for achievement, you may end up wandering aimlessly from school to school—and, you risk not being satisfied on your eventual graduation day. Getting admitted to schools you choose begins with a vision that can be realized—a vision that puts you on that perfect college campus.

You are probably excited and anxious at the thought of completing all the requirements and the prospect of being in college. Relax. Many have survived this process. In fact, you will read about students who got into top colleges with nothing but a vision and the right tools for a great application. This book gives you that set of tools, ignites your vision, and makes the whole application process successful. As you read each section, you will realize that the process is more than meets the eye, but you will soon be on your way to a smooth process—one that takes your vision and makes it real. ...
