Book Description

Kids all know the taste, but its origins are a surprise.

Bread is toast, crumbs, pizza, and buns. But how is bread made? Where is bread from?Beginning with a patch of wheatgrass in his backyard, award-winning filmmaker Levenson takes readers on a tour of bread made from scratch. He makes numerous stops along the way—a thresher, a grinder, a doughy combination of flour, water, yeast, and oil—before reaching the final destination: a freshly baked loaf of whole wheat bread. With energetic, poetic text and vivid photographs, the creative team behind Pumpkin Circle: The Story of a Garden shows children that there’s a lot more than expected in the loaves on grocery shelves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kitchen for Kids
I love Kitchen for Kids !
More importantly, my daughters (9+10) love it too.
The recipes are easy to follow, easy to read but definately not boring, and the photos make it exciting to look through.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who would like to inspire their "young chefs", and think it makes a great birthday gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!
I bought my first copy of K4K before xmas and loved it!My kids enjoyed the photos and we enjoyed the family time in choosing and making the recipes. It seemed the perfect "family gift" for anyone with young kids to preteen, so I ended up buying about 8 copies to give as Christmas gifts.Of course kids are more interested in making "treats" that look tasty and pretty, it is the PERFECT way to get kids interested in the kitchen! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good? Bad?
I bought this cookbook a long time ago. The soup made from leftovers is extremely good, but the 1 teaspoon of pepper it calls for is a little extreme and burned my mouth. ( I suggest seasoning the soup to taste at the table. ) The Christmas tree ornament dough is very good and versatile. The only recipe I would not recommend is the dog biscuits- which looked terrible. I gave them to a dog owner who lives next door, and he said the dog ate them. Was he being polite, or where the dog biscuits virtually inedible? Beats me. This is a good book for small kids who want to cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Entertaining and Teaching Children
This book is great! A fellow teacher of mine showed me this book that she uses every week for planning her lessons. The book explains how to make delicious food items and cool experiments. I have seen the children in great delight making their own frozen yogurt or taste testing honey that is made from different flowers. I enjoyed the book so much I intend to purchase it for my own collection and use it in my own classroom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooking the Swiss Way (Easy Menu Ethnic Cookbooks)
This entire series is fantastic. I've been using it both with my Girl Scouts & 4H clubs for about 20 years now, but also for myself.

This is meant to be a children's cookbook, but unlike most on the market it doesn't talk down to them. A fantastic introduction to the regional cooking with lots of useful information regarding cooking in general & ethnic cooking as well.

Not for someone who is advanced in a particular cuisine, but it does what it sets out to do really, really well. Just wish they would put out regional American cooking books as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cooking the Swiss Way
Cooking the Swiss way is a simple book with basic Swiss recipes. It also gives a broad explanation of some of the Swiss customs. It is a fantastic book (5 stars) for the young cook in the kitchen trying new cultural recipes although for the more advanced it misses its mark. ... Read more

Blue Moon Soup will appeal to all the children in your house, even the ones who are now just kids at heart. The youngest ones will enjoy having it read to them, recipes and all, while they look at Jane Dyer's enchanting illustrations of dancing broccoli, a marching chicken, and a star-spangled, juggling clown. Hearing about Polka Dot Soup (black bean soup dotted with chopped sweet red pepper) and Brrroccoli Soup au Gratin (cheesy and creamy) might even enchant fussy youngsters into tasting something they normally shun. They can then assist in the kitchen as you make Ch-Ch-Chili or they can wonder at the magic of Abracadabra Soup, in which a beaten egg spins strands that cook in simmering, cozy chicken and rice soup (Avgolemono to the grown-up set).

Children old enough to chop can do much of the preparation for One Potato, Two Potato, as well as for Lickity Split Pea Soup. Ultimately, for soups that have become family favorites, older kids may want the accomplishment of cooking from scratch on their own. If they do, the grownups will have no complaint, as the dishes in Blue Moon Soup are as sophisticated as in any cookbook for adults. Most recipes are mild enough to suit young palates, as author Gary Goss uses the same seasonings as he would for adults, calling only for lesser quantities, such as one-half teaspoon of dry mustard in his fish soup, and two tablespoons of optional wine. For some youngsters, though, omissions may be desirable, while for the adults, adding more generous amounts of the seasonings will avoid blandness.

The recipes in Blue Moon Soup are grouped by the seasons, but stirring up a batch of Believe It or Not! Ice cream soup is sure to bring smiles all around the table at any time of year. --Dana Jacobi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SOUPer book!!
What a delightfully illustrated cookbook!! Just received it and can't wait to get started!! The illustrations are splendid as is the easy to read recipes!! Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Passable soup recipes in an enchanting format
If this were a picture book illustrating fairy tales or nursery rhymes, I could honestly give Blue Moon Soup five stars. Jane Dyer's illustrations have just that perfect, whimsical charm that makes such children's books unforgettable. Unfortunately, this is a cookbook that seemed to forget that its main objective is to provide a collection of soup recipes that the whole family will love.

The introduction hinted at such promising soups that were fun and simple to make that I really wanted to like BMS. In fact, the recipes did turned out to be simple; averaging about 11 ingredients each, including spices, and involving nothing more complicated than chopping vegetables, herbs etc. and throwing everything into a pot to simmer. Occasionally, you have to put something or another into a blender and puree. So far so good. The names and concepts of soup were even fun; Hot Diggity Dog soup (hot dogs), Polka Dot Soup (black beans), Abracadabra (Greek lemon-and-egg), Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater (obvious), and Believe It Or Not Soup (Ice Cream), to name a few examples. I will even go so far as to say that these soups generally are fresh, healthy alternatives to the canned varieties as they contain much less sodium and fat and are made from scratch. With all the chopping required I would limit kids' participation to just standing by and "helping" mom and dad by throwing ingredients into the pot, then stirring, but that could also be fun with a little imagination.

Where BMS lost me was in the flavor. Every recipe I tried needed heavy doctoring to attain a flavor discernable enough to justify going to the bother of making these soups from scratch. Possibly, too, I am used to commercial soups that are thick and hearty, leaving the BMS soups seeming runny and diluted by comparison. The chili recipe, claiming to be AbsolutelyThe Best, was even erroneous in its recommended cooking times by a few hours (dried kidney beans are NOT fit to eat after only being soaked overnight and cooked for a mere 30 minutes). The You Can't Elope soup was a simple mixture of pureed melons, half-and-half, juice, wine and vanilla that proved to be so bland that I found myself wishing I had simply eaten the sun-ripened melon in the first place. And do we really need a "recipe" for what every kid achieves instinctively anyway by mashing ice cream in the bowl until it's creamy and half-melted?

The lone standout recipe among the seven that I sampled in this book was the pumpkin soup, which was a welcome change of pace for pumpkin purees and nicely smooth, neither watery nor artificially thick. Even the spices were right on target.

I imagine that I will eventually try some others in this book, and so perhaps keep it on my shelf for awhile longer. IMHO, Blue Moon Soup is a nice choice for people avidly watching their salt intake who love homemade soups.

Looking for humor and beautiful pictures along with fun recipes? You have found it with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute book!
Gary Goss wrote a cute little book about blue moon soup. It'll compicate the process of learning about the moon in grade school in science class but everything else about the book is cute!

5-0 out of 5 stars Soups that the whole family would enjoy
I originally check this book out of a library only to find that I would like to make ALL of the recipes. The ingredients in the recipes are items you have on your shelf. They don't strive to reduce fat or salt but instead strive to be healthy tasty soups. We save money by having one soup meal a week and I am thrilled to add this book to my cookbook shelf. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for what it is
I've used this many times because my kids and I like making recipes from around the world, especially entire menus, if we can.I love the wide array of countries represented here and the genuine effort at authenticity.I also love the array of world holidays presented.

Some of the recipes are simplified because they are meant for kids to make -- instead of deep-fried, for example, some are baked.Sometimes "curry powder" is used when it would never be in the true recipe, but that's understandable, since it's not always easy to get the real ingredients.Still, she gives the authentic names for the recipes, so it's always possible to do an internet search for a more traditional/authentic version. This is a great starting place, and it's wonderful for showing kids world culture and allowing them to participate in it.It's not a showy or cutesy book, but much more valuable than the other "world recipes for kids" type books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book
I, too, checked this out of the library and tried the gingerbread recipe. Made it for the second time today for a family dinner and everyone raved about it. It is a lovely book full of comments about each recipe and wonderful illustrations. My 9 year old loved looking at it too. Can't wait to try more recipes...a good variety with old-fashioned sensibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed to find this is out of print!
I checked this book out of my local library and enjoyed it so much (Laura's gingerbread recipe is especially good) that I wanted to purchase a copy for my personal cookbook collection. I hope it is reprinted soon! Different from "The Little House Cookbook" in that these are not necessarily recipes from Laura's "Little House" books, but rather recipes from her personal cookbook she complied as an adult living in Mansfield, MO. This book is illustrated with beautiful color photos of Laura and Almanzo's home in Missouri (inside and out) and would be a great addition to my cookbook collection. The recipes themselves have a simple, country flair and appear to be easy to prepare (only tried a few but I do love to read cookbooks!) ... Read more

Book Description

The King is coming to visit! For the lord and lady of Camdenton Manor, the announcement from the palace is an awesome challenge. The King travels with his Queen and court: rooms must be readied, tents set up, fields fenced for the royal horses-and above all, there is the great feast to concoct.

The preparations take weeks. There is hunting and hawking, milling and baking, brewing and churning .... Then, in the great vaulted kitchen, the cooking begins in earnest! One after another the sumptuous dishes emerge -- succulent roasts, birds baked in Pies, and fantastic sculptures of pastry and marzipan. And to the music of minstrels, while jugglers juggle and jesters jest, the guests in the Great Hall eat their way through it all. The lord gives his King a feast to remember!

With A Medieval Feast Aliki creates a joyful extravaganza to bring the character and color of a distant world tantalizingly close.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Kids book
I somehow managed to misunderstand that this book was a kids book instead of a Cookbook! don't ask me how... but it was worth keeping anyway, I donated it to the Coffers for a prize for the children of our realm, as I have no kids right now of my own...

Its a good picture book detailing the feast held in the king's honor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful portrayal of Medieval life
The lord and and lady of Camdenton Manor are dismayed when they learn the King and his party are coming to stay with them, they know what a lot of work this will mean for everybody.Throughout the book you see everyone working like mad to get the manor ready in time. Delightful pictures show all the work involved in stocking up with food, hunting, fishing, harvesting, brewing, baking, men, women and children all joining in with the work. The pcitures are full of fascinating details of the lives of medieval people, nobles and commoners alike.Any child interested in history should enjoy this book, if you don't have a child, buy it for yourself.Warning:This is NOT a cookery book! (see first review)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for children!
This is a wonderful book about mideval times for this age group!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent history picturebook
This is a wonderful non-fiction history picturebook for children interested in Medieval times. Aliki's illustrations reflect her thorough research and attention to detail. I love this book. My children pull it outfrom the book shelves over and over. They love to see a lord and lady andall their servants busily preparing a magnificent feast for the King andQueen who soon will be travelling through their land and resting at theirManor. Aliki's illustrations and descriptions tell amazing amounts ofinformation, herbs grown and used in Medieval times, the architecture, andcharacters wearing historically-accurate fashions. The pictures show tools, cookware, utensils, landscapes of the countryside, a brickoven, a flourmillwith a waterwheel, livestock, a vineyard, a well, butterchurns, tapestries, wild animals caught for the feast, honeybeehives, vegetable gardens, andall of the servants and the lord and lady busily preparing for the king andqueen's arrival. This little book is an excellent illustrated resource.

Iread a review about this book given by another amazon customer who boughtthe book looking for recipes. Because the customer ordered without readingthe description of the book first, she was disappointed to find that shehad actually ordered a non-fiction history book for children. I am annoyedthat this customer decided to rate this book with one star because shemis-ordered. The title isn't misleading, it describes exactly what the bookis about, a medieval feast. It's wonderful.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is very misleading!
"A Medieval Feast" is a children's book on a feast held during the Middle Ages.Since I was looking for a book on Medieval Cookery, and this title came up, I purchased it.I shouldn't have. It's a picture bookfor young children, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with Medievalrecipes or cookery. If It wouldn't cost me the price of the book inshipping, I'd send it back. However, for children who would like a storywith a Medieval flare, this book is perfect for them, with lovelyillustrations by ALIKI. ...
