This is a great book for kids and moms (or dads). It has simple, easy to follow recipes and little girls especially love the Disney character illustrations.Just be prepared when your child gets this book; they willwant to start cooking right away. Incredible Edible
Experiments

Ever wonder

  • what makes popcorn pop?
  • why cakes rise?
  • how jelly gels?

Your kitchen will be transformed into a laboratory worthy of a mad scientist as you make startling discoveries about how cabbage can detect acid, how bacteria makes yogurt, and how decomposed sugar turns to caramel. Then after a long day at the lab you can relax and eat your results: soup, biscuits, pretzels, cupcakes, or cookies.

Vicki Cobb's seminal book has been revised and updated to encompass advances in modern technology but still provides what all kids want: a legitimate excuse to play with their food!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get your kids excited about science!
We discovered the original 1974 version of this book in our school library. After a quick perusal, we realized it was a fantastically fun way to teach kids science. The kids love the experiments and they are so easy to follow. Now, we use it everyday in our lesson planning in order to teach the scientific method. What a great way to use all five senses to make learning fun and real-world applicable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kitchen Chemistry at its best
I've had fun with this book as a teacher in my own classroom, as a parent and grandparent in my own kitchen, and best of all as a substitute teacher using it for filler in high school chemistry classes and sometimes wowing advanced chemistry students with how much I know for "just being a mommy." My kids have more vivd memories of this book than they do of video games.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tasty
What a great way to teach science. Children learn best when they can relate to what they are learning and they can relate to most food. Tell them, they forget; show them they remember; but once they've made it and eaten it they will understand(paraphrase of a chinese proverb). I consider this a significant book in our collection for teachers and future teachers. ... Read more

What a great cookbook! Real food for real kids and their real parents. Not only is the layout easy to follow, the book contains good basic info on measuring, cooking techniques, and equipment. 4-0 out of 5 stars Precious Tea Time
Sweet story...........loved the prayer. My grandaughter's
and I will enjoy the book and many tea parties!

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Havev a Tea Party
This is an absolutely wonderful book! It has everything a child or adult would want to know about Tea Parties including child-friendly recipes and crafts. I liked it so much I kept it for myself and ordered two more for my grandaughters. Ok, so I never grew up. It's still a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit old-fashioned if I may...
A nice looking little book but frankly, I should have looked at when it was first published...1997 you say ? So maybe is Emilie Barnes getting a bit 'off' the real world nowadays...It certainly is a dream book for grandmothers who wish to get invited by their grand-daughters for a tea party...surely did not ring a bell with my own (yet adorable but within her own style) daughter. For nostalgic people only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Have a Tea Party
My little one loves tea parties and with this book we have the best parties in the neighborhood. There are so many wonderful themes to choose from. There are wonderful "how tos" so you achieve that theme. Once you get started you'll start adding your own personal touches. Having a true tea party is a dieing thing and this book show little ones what a wonderful non electronic time you can have with a theme, some friends and a pot of tea. We practice our manners and have wonderful talks at our tea parties. Tea parties are a thing of grace, style, and charm. In todays world these things are lost. Children grow up to fast today this may not slow them down but it will give them a wonderful memorey of their childhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars How meaningful to spend the afternoon having a tea party
After reading this book, it is easy for me to see how important is to spend time with our daughters and granddaughters. We as adults need to spend time with our off spring and their friends to have a tea party. It will mean more to them than you can ever know. And in doing so we are teaching them to spend time with one another. No matter what the color of their skin. We are all friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for BIGGER kids too!
I'll let you in on a secret- I am 29 and I love this book! I have no patience for cooking, becoming frustrated at recipes that call for too many ingredients and too many steps. That's why this book is perfect for me! The recipes are simple, no fancy ingredients, no time consuming steps, yet the results are delicious. I cooked up the Cinnamon Rolls the other day and my friend thought that they were store-bought. They were so easy to make yet so good. If you are a big kid who doesn't like cooking, check this book out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for young chefs!
This is the perfect book for older vegetarian kids who want to try their hand in the kitchen. And its forward by dietitian and author Suzanne Havala is a simple, reassuring guide, especially for non-vegetarian parents who have concerns about their independently vegetarian children or teens. For more than ten years, the author of Kids Can Cook Vegetarian Recipes, Dorothy R. Bates, has been hosting Friday afternoon cooking sessions for the teens from the Farm School near where she lives. You may have heard about the Farm, a community in Summertown, TN that is known for raising healthy vegetarian children. The recipes are simple, easy to follow, and there is nothing too out of the ordinary. The Farm kids used these recipes to create 3-course meals, and a place setting diagram is included in the book in case your kids want to host a meal, too (or just learn how to set a proper table). And in case you think it takes seasoned young chefs to recreate such a feat, keep in mind that the author has also used these recipes to cook with disadvantaged inner-city children in the Farm's "Kids to the Country" summer program. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Ideas
I bought this book expecting something different then when it was. I had bought a Disney party planner a few years back and most of the recipes in this book are close to or are exactly the same as the one in the other book. The ideas are cute, and would be great for little kid's birthday parties. The recipes are also in a wierd order, they group them together by movie, and not by type, i.e. the cakes are all in different places depending on what movie it's themed from. Some of the ideas may be to complicated if children want to help, but everything is managable. The Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast ideas are perfect for young girl parties, and The Lion King ideas are adorable. On the other hand the photographs are lovely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disneyana In Your Kitchen, On Your Bookshelf, On Your Plate!
Every grandmother should rush right out and get this charming book with wonderful, colorful Disney art on nearly every page and enchanting, but easy recipes that will appeal to children of all ages. Convenient ingredient AND equipment lists are written in a column beside each recipe. Many homes/kitchens will already have at hand the ordinary ingredients.
These Disney films head up each chapter: The Lion King, Cinderella, Aladdin, Dumbo, 101 Dalmatians, The Aristocats, Beauty and the Beast, A Bug's Life, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Fantasia. From Cream Puff Coaches to Peanut Butter Mice this book will entertain, delight and amaze you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Making Dsiney Magic in Your Kitchen
From realistic 'The Beast's Enchanted Gumdrop Roses' to whimsical 'Frozen Francis Far-from-Feminine Ladybugs', you're sure to find something appealing to both eye and palette.

I don't have children but I felt like a kid as I stood in my kitchen shaping little 'Canine Crunchies'. Though the recipe makes 10-12 bones, I only ended up with 8 to show for my efforts. This probably had something to do with my desire to sample a few to make sure they were up to my strict standards. I couldn't help it. They were good!

These are delicious and fun recipes. They are well thought out though some of them could do with better instructions. By trying to be simplistic, a few recipes sometimes leave out what may seem like obvious steps or are not as descriptive as they could be.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
this is the best recipe book i have ever read! it is so hard to find good recipes today and this gives 30 great ones. And you have most of the stuff you need right in your kitchen so no special trips to the store. i make the Creme de la creme every night before i go to bed. it helps me sleep! this is a great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the young cooks.
It is hard finding a quality cookbook for the younger people. Many are too cartoonish, and fail to recognize that there are some young people that take their cooking seriously. This book lives up to serving up good tasting recipes, with a fresh presentation. This book would be great for a rainy day, a scout troup, or even for the parents to make up an interesting meal. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not satisfied
This book is fun to look at but most, not all, of the recipes are extremely fattening. It is mostly made up of sweets and treats. There are a few healthy and nutritious items but overall you'll see nothing but how to make cookies, candy and ice cream. I don't recommend this book if you are trying to feed your children healthy snacks. These aren't snacks, they're desserts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the younger people that would like to cook
This book is a fun book. It has many colorful illustrations that is sure to please and interest young children. The recipes in this book are fun! You can make things like waffle skyscrapers, field of greens pizza, corn cobs, and so much more. 4-0 out of 5 stars I Lost My Book
I received this book when I was a lot younger, but my sister stole it from me and I never got it back. Well, I am in nursing college now, and I miss my book! Sad, but true, I am a cooking virgin! I cannot cook worth a darn and I just had to find my lost book! All i remembered was "eggs in a frame" because that is the only reciepe I actually got to cook from it! In college, we have limited time and resources, so the book may help me once again. If not, then I guess I have something to give my kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars Has Stood Up To The Test of Time!
Both the content and the actual book have stood up to many years of use. My young son enjoys participating in meal selection and preparation. Now if I could convince his mom he's ready to grill outside! The recipes are fun and delicious. This cookbook gives a child fundamentals in measuring and the basic "science" of cooking. Nice durable ring bound book with good illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kid-able recipes that taste great!
I recieved this book for Christmas in 1989. I was thrilled to discover that I could cook all by myself!

The recipes in this book are simple enough that kids can manage them easily, without feeling like they need assistance through the whole thing. (And when you're a kid, that's important!) It even specifies which parts of the job should be handled by a "grown-up assistant."

What's more, the results are delicious. So good, in fact, that now that I am getting married I still have this cook book in my kitchen, and I still use it on a regular basis when I need a quick, easy meal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and GREAT recipes
My 3-year old daughter received this book as a gift and loves it. So do I! The recipes are simple (you probably have most of the ingredients in the house) and there are pictures of ingredients and measurements so that she can follow along. This is a great rainy day activity book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids who want to try their own cooking!
Our daughter, age 5, is entralled with this cookbook and even at her age is capable of doing the majority of the child's part. The cookbook is laid out so that there are children's steps and adult steps and each step is clearly explained. She especially loves having her own set of measuring spoons, color coded for size. Definitely a winner! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Gift
I gave this book to a friend (25 yrs old at the time) and she loves it. We are both huge Anne Shirley fans and actually L.M. Montgomery fans too. This is a very sweet book that provides you with memories of some of Anne's memorable moments and adventures.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the True Anne Lover
I bought this book for a friend, but before I gave it to her I poured over it. It is adorable and a great book for True Anne Lovers... and not just for kids! I made the raspberry cordial and it is simply delicous. This book brings back memories of Anne's adventures and important events in her life. You will enjoy this book if you are an Anne fan or if you are a cook... you will LOVE this book if you are an Anne fan AND a cook!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for those who love Green Gables and cannot cook!
I bought this book to the ridicule of family and boyfriend but now they're the one's who can't wait for me to make the recipes included! The saucy chicken was a hit with my mum as was the caramel sauce with everyone. Other recipies include raspberry cordial, shortbread (came out yummy), icecream and chocolate caramels. I can't cook to save my life but these recipies are a doddle, even when I messed up the traditional lemonade it still tasted great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful cookbook, just like the books!
This cookbook will soon become a little girl's treasure. Illustrations are abound in this book, they include the characters that are in the Anne of Green Gables Cookbooks. You can easily see Anne and Diana preparing whats in this cookbook. The recipes are simple, easy to follow, and will come out well. Diana's Cordials are simply heavenly. This is a definately must have for any Anne of Green Gables fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tool for aspiring "chefs."
Cooking is one of my favorite hobbies. I rarely ever use a cookbook, but this one is the "exception to the rule." I have used several recipes from this book. Everyone especially loves the "Old-fashioned Lemonade!"

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Every Young Girl - And Boy - Should Have!
Mud Pies and Other Recipes is one of the most imaginative, enchanting, and FUN books that I have ever laid eyes on. All the magic of doll tea parties, forest outings, and mud pies is incorporated within the pages of this quaint little book.

In a most serious manner, Ms. Winslow will teach your little girls how to easily and properly prepare delicious doll-sized appetizers, soups, salads & sandwiches, main dishes, pastries & desserts, and beverages, using ingredients found in your own backyard. There are even suggested menu plans included within the last few pages of the book! And the simple beauty of Erik Blegvad's charming ink drawings depicting girls - and boys - preparing the foods only adds to the overall effect this book will bring.

Since my sister received this book several years ago, the memories that have revolved around its contents are numberless. Our mother and even my younger brother have joined us in the fun and togetherness that something as simple as mud and water can bring. I would recommend this to all mothers with young children, and highly suggest buying two copies if you wish for the book to remain bound together and clean for long. Perhaps if there were more books like this, fewer young adults would resort to their video game systems for entertainment rather than spend time out-of-doors.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Imagination Booster
The day I recieved this book, I walked right into my daughter's room to read it to her. The fact that it is written with a very serious air made her laugh all the more. (I recommend a British accent.) I explained to her that this recipe book was very special because I always made very similar meals for my dolls as a child and had always felt they were my exclusive ideas. I could see her eyes glowing with the magic of it all and we planned a dolly picnic for the morning. When I went to wake her up the next day, I noticed several little bears sitting around teacups full of some indistinguishable slop. She said, "I took your advice and made them some special tea so they could sleep. I used water, crumpled paper and perfume. And Mama, they LOVED IT!" For parents who want to make their children's childhood as full of fantasy and dreams as possible, this book is a lovely imagination booster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still enchanting after 30 years
This was my favorite book while I was growing up. I would check this out from the Grand Prairie Public Library and head to the backyard with book in hand. Using pots and pans and cans and whatever I could scrounge, I would assemble the recipes, Sand Torte being a favorite. Although this was written for children, the magic still holds. Written in easy to read and imagination engaging language, this inspires the reader to try the recepies and to let their imagination soar. Delightful ink illustrations and witty writing makes this enjoyable reading into adulthood....a bonus, I found my new copy in the cookbook section of my local bookstore. A classic for the child in all of us.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic that sparks the imagination, emphasizes nature
I grew up with the first printing of this book. It's a very special and whimsical approach - handled for the 'grown-up' sensibility of a 6 six old girl. My copy is always near by for a giggle, and I plan to gift one each to all the doll party hostesses I know. I hope these recipes for sweet memories will be as enduring for them as they have been for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic book!
I remember this book from my own childhood. I never actually owned a copy, but I checked it out of the library practically every week. It's a wonderful, wonderful book for little girls (and probably boys too!). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 50 Fun Kitchen Experiments that teach!
I don't know about you, but cornstarch has always intrigued me. The way when you add water it gets so well, difficult to stir. So, why does it do this?

Aha...so, cornstarch never really dissolves and that is why it forms tiny solid pieces suspended in the water. That is called a colloid. The harder you press them, the firmer they feel, but when you leave them alone..they drip. When mixing cornstarch in water, you will find this to be SO true. However, if you add enough water, you win. ;>

So what fun will the kids be having?

Captain Cook - Eggs science (making meringues), Making Butter
Manic Mixtures - Cornstarch fun...lots of messy "goo"
Double Bubble Trouble - Making huge bubbles
Tower of Strength - Sugar Cement
Moldy Stuff - Yup..Mold!
Sour Power - Lemons as natural batteries
Fizzical Reactions - Volcanic eruptions..watch out kitchen!
Acid Tests - Get the kids to enjoy cleaning the silver...too funny.
Sinking Feeling - An explanation of lava lamps
Chopping Mad - Coloring celery, etc.
On the Move - Making a water wheel
Hot and Cold - Making Ice cream, hey finally something you can really eat!
Farming Crystals - Crystals from salts
Wet, Wet, Wet - Steam, liquid, ice
Under Pressure - Siphoning, etc.
Creating Currents - Electric charges, balloons
Hard and Soft - Boiling eggs, melting chocolate, toasting bread
Light Fantastic - Make a fake rainbow
Making Sense - Five senses, picture of what we taste: bitter, sweet, sour, salty
Seeing Sound - Sound waves and making your own drum
Hearing Things - Make some fun earphones

Each experiment has a bold heading, followed by plenty of pictures. The ingredients
are not listed in order, but are listed in the instructions. I would have liked to see them listed, but there are quite a few experiments on each page, so you can pick one. Most don't have that many ingredients and more than likely, you will have the ingredients
for these recipes or can easily obtain them at the grocery store.

You might want to keep this book in the kitchen so kids can play while you are cooking, soon they will want to be in the kitchen more when they find out how much fun it really is to "play" in the kitchen. If you think about it, children are naturally attracted to the kitchen, that is the only way to explain why all that Tupperware is everywhere again! For babies, playing with regular kitchen items can be really fun.

I myself was often found in a drawer or tossing about the entire contents of the lower kitchen cupboards. That was before they invented those child lock devices to keep kids out of the cupboards. I still think as a child there was no place more fun that the kitchen. When my parents kept me out for a few hours when they were painting, they said I screamed my head off the entire time. ;> Hey, I just wanted to help!

Imagine if I had found this book as a child! Fortunately science teachers do teach some of the fun things in this book. Your kids will LOVE it, and secretly,..I think you will too. ... Read more
