Book Description

There could be no more festive way to introduce Jewish children to their Jewish heritage than through the food associated with the holidays. And no better person to do it than Joan Nathan, whose great enthusiasm and knowledge have gained her a national reputation as the maven of the Jewish kitchen.

Here are seventy child-centered recipes and cooking activities from around the world in which the entire family can participate. Covering the ten major holidays, each of the activities has a different focus--such as Eastern Europe, Biblical Israel, contemporary America--and together they present a vast array of foods, flavors, and ideas. The recipes are old and new, traditional and novel--everything from hamantashen to pretzel bagels, chicken soup with matzah balls to matzah pizza, cheese blintzes to vegetarian chopped liver, hallah to halvah, fruit kugel to Persian pomegranate punch.

First published in paperback in l988, The Children's Jewish Holiday Kitchen has now been redesigned and contains 20 additional delicious recipes and 30 delightful new drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, child-friendly recipes
We checked this book out from the library again and again. We loved it. There are seven very 'American' children in our family, and we ate or drank every recipe we tried from this cookbook.
The illustrations and descriptions were delightful. The recipes were tasty and appealing to all literary-minded children who have been permitted or encouraged from babyhood to have adventurous palates.
Several recipes have been oft requested birthday favorites.

Yummy. Wish it were still in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Food, Wonderful Fantasy
I LOVE the Chronicles of Narnia, even as a "grown-up".So I jumped at the chance to learn how to make foods described in the books.

The book is supposedly aimed at kids. I will say though, that the taste of the foods is really more adult (or English). They taste great, don't get me wrong, but kids (unless they are really excited about the recipies being Narnian) will likely think them wierd. I made the Tea Cakes with Lemon Curd Filling for a friend's kid's Communion Party, and all the adults raved--but the kids wouldn't even go near them. (Incidentally, the Tea Cakes are DELICIOUS. A wonderful treat).

A note of advice, you will need stuff like double boilers and parchment paper for some of the recipies. Plus you will have to make some trips to specialty food stores. However, most of the stuff is middling easy to make.

Overall, this is a wonderful book. I am so glad I have it. The recipies are very tasty, and the book itself provides a wonderful cornicopia of foods and ideas that Americans are not very familiar with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transport your family to Narnia
Having a 7-year old boy who loves The Chronicles of Narnia, this book really caught my eye. He has pored over it, and we have already made two of the recipes: Lucy's Roast Apples and Marmalade Roll. They both turned out very well, and were quite popular with the whole family.

This book has approximately 68 recipes divided into categories such as Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner, Dessert, and Drinks.

In my opinion, the mark of a good cookbook is the percentage of recipes that one would actually make. In this cookbook, there is a high percentage of the recipes that I would try.

Each recipe has a bit of commentary from Douglas Gresham, Lewis' stepson, and a quote from one of the books that lists the dish the recipe is for. The commentary is interesting and informative. There is also a foreward written by Gresham. At the end of the book are some menu ideas so that you can have a Narnian dinner party with your friends. ... Read more

Craft projects and delicious recipes, which children can try with the help of an adult, are also included. 5-0 out of 5 stars Teatime With Emma Buttersnap
What a darling book...I have a tea business and when children come for tea they bring their dolls which are set at the doll tea table...this book is displayed there...my nieces loved it too when I read it to them!

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful, compelling story with thrilling illustrations
This is an absolutely delightful book that opened my eyes about tea parties. I highly recommend it to the parent of any child with a vivid imagination and sense of fun. Emma Buttersnap, the charming heroine, goes on an intriguing journey to a mysterious land (England). Along the way she learns history (Boston Tea Party), botany (all the varieties of tea), arts & crafts (doily making) and more. There's a juicy mystery that kept my own daughter quite intrigued. The illustrations, by the way, are superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars A young girl learns how to throw a tea party.
A wonderful and vibrant book both in picture and text, TEA TIME gives young girls an interesting introduction to the history of tea and tea parties. Emma is a precocious narrator and her Aunt Pru a wonderful teacher. It's a perfect gift book -- I bought one for each of my nieces who love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars a fresh and informative look at the history of tea

Knead It, Punch It, Bake It! is the perfect introduction to bread baking for kids of all ages. Judith and Evan Jones first wrote this book in 1981. When they updated it in 1998, they added illustrations as well as fresh new recipes.

The writing bursts with the sounds and smells of bread, so you make French bread that is a "chewy, deliciously crackly loaf." Once you and any young assistants have mastered this recipe, and the basic White Bread, Sourdough, Piazza and Focaccia, you can move on to more unusual choices. There are cornmeal hoe cakes to make in a skillet, doughnuts to fry, bagels to boil, and pretzels to twist. Comforting baked goodies are here, like Ginger Bread and Zucchini Bread, plus Blueberry Muffins, puffy Popovers, and gooey Sticky Buns, making this a comprehensive little volume. There are even playful projects, including Flower Pot Bread, to organize for a classroom or scout troop.

Understanding the difference between talking simply and talking down, the Joneses have written a classic that makes the adventure of baking comfortable for inexperienced adults, as well as for children. --Dana Jacobi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bread Baking for both Children and Adults!
I confess. I bought this book mainly for myself, an adult. I was "trapped" in the children's section of the book store while my children browsed the books. I found this book. I NEVER baked a loaf of bread from scratch before. I never knew the joy of kneading bread and watching it rise. I was much too intimidated to try from an adult cookbook. This was just what I needed. It is a simple, step by step book on baking all kinds of breads and rolls. I started with a great whole wheat bread recipe. Now I am trying things like my own pita bread and popovers. I love it! And sometimes I even let my children in on the fun! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent title for creating cultural awareness
I agree with the other reviewers that the pictures are wonderful, and the text (though minimal) is good. My 3 YO son really likes this book, and as others have mentioned, it works on several levels. I can see us using this book for several years to come to emphasize the fact that different cultures around the world DO have lots of things in common. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars was because the captions giving you more information about content of the pictures is all collected at the back of the book. So if you want to know whether the picture is from the Philippines or the US, for example, you have to keep flipping back and forth. It seems like there could have been a way to incorporate these endnotes into the text directly without destroying the effectiveness of the book as a charming elementary reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a Small World After All.
This little book talks about bread. There aren't very many words, but the few that there are augment a child's vocabulary, yet are easy to understand. The most important part of this book are the pictures. Using pictures of people all over the world eating all kinds of different bread, helps children to begin to understand the bigger world around them. The book also illustrates how even though some things are the same, they can also be quite different. The book also contains a helpful section at the end for parents and other educators. It's a small world after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars a low-key intro to the cross-cultural world
A terrific collection of photos that introduces both similarities and difference. The text is very simple, but more info for parents to explain is included in the back, so this can serve very young and not quite as young children. (My daughter enjoyed it at 1 1/2)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos give children a global view
an interesting way of introducing young children to the world and cultures around them. Bread is one of the few things all people have in common and the realism of the photographs leave the reader with a broader knowledge of this small world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes and Art Projects
I have this book and have found that although most of the cake recipes use the Easy-Bake mix, there are MANY recipes provided that don't. These include: Petite Pizzas, Cheese sticks, Nachos, Bagel snacks, Rice cakes (sweet), Crispy Rice Truffles, Smores, Chocolate/Graham Layer Bars, Popcorn Balls, Dog treats, Sugared Nuts, Shortbread Hearts, Gold Coin Cookies, Raisin Scones, Ham & Cheese Wrap, Quesadillas, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Chocolate Covered Creepies (for Halloween), and then some additional recipes for drinks and other items that kids can easily make that do not require use of the oven.
The cookbook is spiral bound so it can lie flat. It contains many art projects in addition to recipes to accesorize your table. At the back of the book is an appendix that lists the recipes that require the Easy-bake cake or cookie mixes or are from scratch. There are also some helpful information pages with diagrams of how to properly set a table, a napkin fold, equivalency charts, etc...
Really it is a well done book. I agree with the previous reviewer in that it would be nice if there were alternative options for the Cakes and Cookies that require the Easy-Bake mix. However, I would still say there are quite a few from scratch recipes and many more than one might expect than from an Easy-Bake "Official" cookbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars An Easy Bake Mom
When I purchased this book I was looking for Easy Bake Recipes made from scratch, as the prepackaged Easy Bake Mixes were expensive, and not very tasty. Instead what I got was a book expanding on the use of Easy Bake Mixes. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO BAKE IN YOU'RE EASY BAKE OVEN FROM SCRATCH, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK YOUR LOOKING FOR.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for kids....
My kids love to prepare the dishes from this book, the recipes are simple enough and the results are delicious! By the way, scant is slightly less than a pinch, but who cares?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for kids and non-native English speakers
I originally bought this book for a Vietnamese friend whose English is not very good. She wanted to teach her 11-year old daughter how to cook "American" food, but wasn't familiar with it. This book is perfect for both of them. For example, the ingredients are shown with a picture of the food item as well as quantity. So if the recipe calls for zucchini, there is a picture of zucchini - this allows my friend to do the grocery shopping (she knows zucchini in Vietnamese but not in English). It also includes an illustrated glossary at the back to help with terms such as "simmer."
I was so impressed with this book that I ordered one for myself, as well as Angela Wilkes' Children's Quick And Easy Cookbook for when my grandkids are old enough to use it! (Okay, the truth - I want to make some of the recipes now!)

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for the aspiring chef
I bought this book for my 9 year old grandson and now he plans to be a chef in his own restaurant. He loves the recipes and we love to share the meals he prepares. The photos are very good and allows children to whet their appetites. The directions are clear and easy to follow. I plan to buy this for other friends who are grandparents so they, too, can give it to their grandchildren.

2-0 out of 5 stars not for the beginner
I was looking for a cookbook that introduced cooking with simple recipes like french toast or scrambled eggs. Forget this book. It had ingredients like mascarpone(?) and used measurement terms like "scant". It had lemon cheesecake and souffle as a couple of recipes. That was a little too advanced for someone starting out.
It only received two stars from me for the big bold colors and very clear pictures. Still, how do I explain a scant and a mascarpone to my 7 year old? So, I picked up the book thinking the big pictures and primary colors would also have basic simple recipes, but it clearly does not. This is probably good for an older child who has experience in cooking already.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Childrens step by step Cook Book.
I got this book about two years ago and gave it to my two grandaughters who live beside us. They found the book to have wonderful illustrations of the amounts measured and of the ingredients very easy to use. The receipes turned out to be very good and consistent. The two girls have grown in confidence and have they cooked crepes for me for a party of ten people. I was very proud of them but better still they were proud of themselves. They have gone on to cook there own birthday cakes and make sunday breakfasts. I have just bought another of the same book for another grandaughter and still have two families to buy the same book for the girls. It is a FANTASTIC BOOK. All four sets of my grandchildren will eventually have there own and pass it on to there children. Angela Thompson. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars loaves of fun
What a great book. We incorporated it into our homeschool curriculum (great for the kid who enjoys cooking!). In addition to the fascinating historical and cultural tour, the recipes are delicious, and provide an opportunity to work with all those tricky fractions as well. We're looking forward to more books by the Harbisons.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an interesting read
My daughter needed this book for a school report she was doing, and I picked it up one night and started flipping through it. To my surprise, I really got interested. This is a very informative book and the illustrations are just adorable. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational
Sure you've eaten white, rye and wheat bread. But how about Welsh Rabbit, Amish Friendship Bread and Jewish challah? These and other interesting breads are made around the world. Hear all about them in LOAVES OF FUN: A HISTORY OF BREAD WITH ACTIVITIES AND RECIPES FROM AROUND THE WORLD. The book, which contains over 30 recipes and activities, also explains how French toast, pretzels and the first sandwiches were created.

-YES Magazine, May/June 1997

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gastronomical Journey Through Time
This winsome little book is designed to take readers on a gastronomical journey through the history of the world. The history of bread is, according to the Introduction, also the history of civilzation and this book is one delicious way to make that discovery. The heart of the book consists of a timeline history of bread, beginning at 73,000 B.C. in Asia when bread began as a lumpy concoction of mashed grain and water, and ending with a look inside a modern bakery, accompanied by recipes for white bread, French bread, croutons and French Toast. Scattered along this timeline are historical tidbits and bread making stories from various cultures both ancient and modern. Readers will learn why the ancient Egyptians are credited with the discovery of yeast breads, why the Pilgrims often ate their biscuts in the dark, why Marie Antoinette allegedly said, "Let them eat cake," and how John Montague, the English Earl of Sandich, came to invent the popular lunchbox fare. Naturally the book includes plenty of tempting recipes to try out as well. including colonial Johnnycakes, Sally Lunn from nineteenth-century England, and Moravian Christmas bread. There are even recipes for readers who, instead of baking, would rather use bread-making ingredients to create gooey mixtures in the kitchen. Poster paints, squeeze paints, and play dough, for instance, can be made from flour, water, salt, sugar and oil. And those of a scientific mind can grow a little mold in honor of Sir Alexander Fleming or use a simple yeasty mixture to blow up a balloon. Since all cultures throughout history have had some kind of bread at nearly every meal, one could say that bread is the common gluten that binds us all together. LOAVES OF FUN offers a fun and tasty way for homeschooling families to combine a little history with their bread baking -- and eating -- endeavors." -Joan Torkildson, Home Education Magazine, May-June 1997

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
LOAVES OF FUN is a way to learn that however different people of the world may seem, nearly everyone shares in the common denominator of bread. With more than 30 recipes and activities, this lovely book takes kids on a multicultural journey through the ages and across the globe to discover bread and the people who created, cooked, ate, and enjoyed it. Along the way kids will encounter prehistoric people, French aristocracy, Pilgrims on their journey to America, Romans on their way to the forum, medieval lords and ladies, ancient Egyptians, and a host of other characters from cultures far and wide. There's some delicious food to be had on the journey too, including Colonial Corn bread, Middle Eastern pita, German pretzels, French baguettes, Mexican New Year's bread, Amish friendship bread, and more. -The International Cookbook Revue, September-October 1997 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Safety tips are also included
Recommended for girls age 5-8, Fiona Munro's Barbie Fun To Cook is an illustrated, step-by-step cookbook for creating short, simple, nutritious dishes. Extensive color photographs of the ingredients, preparation steps, mouth-watering finished dishes, and of course Barbie herself make every cooking technique easy to grasp and fun to learn. Safety tips are also included, though very young children should of course have adult supervision in the kitchen. Highly recommended to help teach youngsters the joy of cooking! From Sunshine Breakfast, Chunky Chocolate Cookies, and Pick-Up Pizzas, to Dippy Chicken, Burger Bites, and Best-Ever Brownies, Barbie Fun To Cook is a welcome addition to any youngster's cookbook shelf!

4-0 out of 5 stars Way to Go Barbie you Cookingrl!
My first question is: "How does Barbie stay so skinny eating all this delicious food?" On the other hand, who cares...just pass me the brownies. Can I say, Barbie does look cute in an apron as well. Children love to learn how to cook. It is only when we get to be adults that we find out it is a bit of work. Not too much, but it does take more effort and your mom and dad are not there to pick up after you. I just hate that!!!!

So, what is Barbie cooking? You will find recipes for all her favorite foods. Simple step-by-step photographs show you how to make fruity freezies. They are great for the summer and you could make them now. This is a really fun cookbook even a "girl-at-heart woman" can enjoy. Remember making those chocolate cakes and eating them as fast as you made them in your "light bulb" based oven? Well, here you are using a real oven and kids sure have grown up!

I would advise adult supervision around the stove, but my mother let me start cooking at a very early age. I am sure she was nearby, but I was so intrigued with cooking...I just remember my poor dad scrubbing burnt pans...(Until I learned how to watch what I was doing and not leave things on the stove while I was outside playing. Hey, I was only 7) The recipes include: A Fruity Feast, Sunshine Breakfast, Mini Muffins, Sandwich Stacks, Aprinana Cake, Chocolate Cookies, Fuity Freezies, Lemon Cooler, Super Shakes, Rainbow Fruit Snack Sticks, Cute Cookies (and they are cute!), Birthday Cakes complete with butterflies (Martha would be proud of Barbie), Chocolate Dipped Fruit, Mini Pizzas, Burger Bites, Dippy Chicken (Thai Chicken with peanut dip), Perfect Pasta with tomato sauce, Stuffed Baked Potatoes, Nacho Nibbles, Super Sundaes, Brownies and Two Minute Treats (popcorn, banana sandwiches, salad, celery with fillings, apple boats with cheese sails).

Barbies appear on each recipe and tell you why you "just must" try their recipes. "Here are two ideas for a fabulously fruity brunchtime treat." says Barbie. She then gives pictures of all the ingredients with their names and then shows step-by-step phographs of a real kid helping her cook. This is totally a girly, girl cookbook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The United States Cookbook
As the mother of a 10 year old daughter who loves both cooking and social studies, I was very impressed by the authors' creativity in combining both into one excellent volume. The choice of recipes were very appropriate, from the standpoint of preparation by a child, what youngsters like to eat, and what the region is known for. What makes this kid-friendly cookbook unique, though, is the interesting information about the states that preceeds each entry. I found myself reading through the pages to learn fascinating information about the history, local customs, etc. without even needing to cook anything that day. It gives you something to pass the time while your meal is in the oven, too! Truly a great book--I highly recommend it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hidden message
"The Gingerbread Man" is a great story for young children. However this story also has many hidden themes that your child might pickup on while reading this tale. "The Gingerbread Man" supports the idea that women are mearly the creaters of life and house keepers, and warns young children of the consequences of being arrongant and disrespecting your maker. Even with these hidden themes any child should enjoy this story.

4-0 out of 5 stars fairy tales and popular culture
The story of "The Gingerbread Man" has for centuries enlightened the hearts of its young readers. It has helped to redefine the way that popular cuture work helps to shape an individual's way of interpreting the ideological work that the story portrays. That utopian feel to it; where people want to see the hero win in the end and come up on top.In fact the gingerbread man gets eaten in the end, which goes against that utopian type of fairy tale that the public genre tends to enjoy more. But for some reason this fairy tale has been one that against all odds, has remained popular, and entertaining and plain old FUN.Which is what the everyday reader wants to read, something that is fun and entertaining when it comes to fairy tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful version of the classic tale
Lovely illustrations and repeating, predictable text. The illustrations are "old fashioned" looking and were drawn in ink then colored with watercolors and gouache. A classic tale about a gingerbread cookie man that gets up and runs away when he is released from the oven and leads many on a long chase. My children want me to read this story over and over again! There are many versions of this story in print but we especially like this one. As a bonus, the recipe for gingerbread cookies is on the back cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite Book!!
I have read this book more than any other!! My children love to hear run run run as fast as you can.... that they chant with me! Great classic book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Run as fast as you can!
Run as fast as you can, and get this book! The illustrations are fantastic, and the rhythm and rhyming are far better than "The Ginger Bread Boy"! I have purchased copies of both, and my 3 year old enjoys this one MUCH more! This is a book that every child should have in their room! Even if the "Ginger Bread Man" does get eaten in the end, he is after all, just a cookie! This is a fun book to read to your children, and I highly recomend it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars * Have it.. Like it...but could be more detailed..*
First of all, i just want to say that i enjoy most of the American Girl library, and that this one is no different. The food sounds great[read the book and you'll understand TOTALLY what i mean]but i have not found much time to make any of it.
Still, they could have been abit more detailed. And i will admit some of the games were EXTREMELY pointless and immature for my agegroup.

Overall, reccomended for ages 8-11

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This is the best party book ever. There is no book that could give you better party ideas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Slumber Parties Review
This book is my favorite book! It has a ton of great ideas for slumber parties. It has games, snacks to make, themes to choose from, invitations to make, and much, much more! You have to get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The TitleTells it All
This book was not only very intresting, but full of WONDERFUL ideas. People are still talking about the best sleepover they ever attended. And that was 3 years ago, all thanx to this WONDERFUL book. I can't say enough good things about it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help in planning sleepovers!!
The only thing my daughter wanted for her 10th birthday was a sleepover with 5 of her "best friends". I had no clue where to start to help her...and myself...out on this one. Luckily, we subscribed her to the American Girl magazine & had just received the February edition. It contained so many cool ideas for games, themes...even recipes...and it mentioned this book. I ordered the book the same day & have not regretted it for one second! Erica was able to pretty much plan & run her entire party & she & her friends had a blast doing it! I'd recommend it to any parent whose daughter is begging to have a slumber party...or even just a sleepover with one friend. It lets girls "be in charge" and gives them a great feeling knowing that they were able to plan and carry out the whole thing with only a little help and supervision from mom & dad! Too bad this book wasn't around when I was 10! ... Read more
