4-0 out of 5 stars Cook Up Some Family Fun
This is such a great idea! This book uses popular children's literature and provides an activity and a recipe to go along with the story. The activites are interesting and easy to do (i.e. they usually require objects or ingredients that one has around the house) and the recipies are really quite tasty. What a great way to enhance the reading experience of a favorite book. This books is great family fun. One small note, I would have liked to see suggested age levels for each title since I am not familiar with every book included in this activity guide. ... Read more

Book Description

"I don't know about you, but I've always been really curious about what other people eat. Being nosy is how I've got some of my best ideas as a chef-and discovered some of my favorite things to eat." -From the Introduction to Let's Eat by Jamie Oliver, The Naked Chef

A beautifully photographed introduction to the
way children from around the world eat

What we eat says a lot about who we are and where we come from. The five children in this book live in very different countries, and they each have their own ideas about what tastes good. But they have lots in common, too: they all go food shopping and help with the cooking, share mealtimes with their families, eat special foods to celebrate, and have things they love to eat and things they definitely don't.

Endorsed by Jamie Oliver, The Naked Chef, this vibrant companion book to Wake Up, World! is a friendly and fascinating introduction to the way people eat and live around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Girl Scout Troops and the classroom!
My girl scouts and I have used this cookbook many times for World Thinking Day recipes. The variety of recipes and countries represented is great - you will find recipes for countries not in your average international cookbook. The recipes range from fast and easy to more time consuming and complicated. However, that makes this cookbook suitable for all age groups. I have also used this cookbook in the classroom with 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for young cooks.
I have to applaud this book. It blends its United Nations like ambassadorship with a practical knowledge of cooking. There are so few great cookbooks for young people and this, 1993 edition of this book, is one of them.

As far as the authenticity of the recipes, as a Bulgarian-American, I can offer my opinion on the selections for Bulgaria. There are three accurate and appropriate yogurt based recipes: tarator, lassi and homemade yogurt itself. Certainly signature dishes from the country. (Not to mention seeing yogurt made for the first time is pretty neat when you're a kid and are used to seeing it only in little cups from the supermarket!)

The practical knowledge presented for cooking surprised me. Usually cookbooks for children are 'dumbed down' but this one gives them real instruction while speaking to them in appropriate language. Much better in fact than handouts for Home Ec. class they'll get in middle school or junior high.

Now a warning. There is a 2001 version of this book under the same title and template but with completely different recipes. Personally, I find this 1993 version friendlier and more appropriate. You might feel different, but suffice it to say, there are two completely different books out there under the same title and press.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Concise Multicultural Reference
Carole Lisa Albyn, a branch librarian and former children's librarian, dedicates this book to the child, who, in a very small voice, so small that she had to lean over to hear, asked for a recipe from "Yemen, South Yemen." She says, "This is my way of apology for sending you off without anything because all I had to offer was a coffee recipe from South Yemen."

At our library, this has become one of the most useful references for students who need concise information on a particular country. Each section is organized by geographical, agricultural and even some religious information. "Somalis are Sunni Muslim. This is important to note because no form of alcohol is allowed. Instead, Somalis drink tea or milk." There's a section on common sense, safety and cleanliness, reminding children that the book is designed to teach them about the countries, not as an introduction to cooking methods in general. In almost every case, there are at least two recipes for each country listed. Some countries have more, some have fewer. There's a glossary of terms to explain unfamiliar words. The book ends with a comprehensive index, listing recipe names major ingredients, and other terms.

As a librarian, it is wonderful to be able to refer students to such a thorough resource. It is the dedication and drive of people like Carole Lisa Albyn that make wonderful references such as the Multicultural Cookbook for Students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a taste of culture and comments on each country
This book is an excellant cookbook with recipies from many countries. I have checked it out at least 10 times from our local library and I plan on buying my own copy since I keep checking it out. I cook at least one of these recipies each month as the class studies a particular country. ... Read more

Young Marcia Shaw is not thrilled to hear that a mother's helper namedFannie Farmer is joining her Victorian household to cook for the growing family.Somehow, though, it's hard to complain when suddenly the blueberry pies are"sweeter than a summer sky" and the biscuits are "small, light, and flaky. Justdelicious." In spite of herself, Marcia quickly becomes an avid fan and ardentstudent of Fannie, even encouraging her to begin writing precise instructions toher cookery magic, thus spawning one of the first published cookbooks, Boston Cooking-School CookBook, a.k.a. The Fannie Farmer Cookbook.

Considered the pioneer of the modern recipe, Fannie Farmer transformed countlesskitchens into oases of exact measurements and perfect cooking. DeborahHopkinson's fictionalized account, complete with original griddle cakes recipe,is a warm, humorous take on the real Fannie Farmer. Nancy Carpenter createdsplendidly original illustrations for the book, manipulating 19th-centuryetchings and engravings and blending them with her own watercolor andpen-and-ink illustrations. Wonderful! (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for classroom use
I am an educator who likes to use historical fiction with elementary students. Students love the story of FANNIE IN THE KITCHEN, and we have also used the book to talk about how cooking has changed over the years. I bring in old kitchen utensils from antique stores to show them. (Many kids can't identify a sifter, to say nothing of a butter mold! And when was the last time you saw a doughnut cutter??) We also use the book as a jumping off point to talk about math and measurements.

Although this is clearly a humourous, fictionalized take-off on a footnote to history, students and I also enjoy talking about how young Marcia must adjust to change, as her mother has a new baby. The way the illustrator depicts the developing relationship between Marcia and Fannie is delightful.

As the author note states, Fannie Farmer was one of the first to recommend precise measurements in cooking. What a fun way for kids to be introduced to this 19th century figure

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Fiction
Kids might have seen the Fannie Farmer Cookbook in the kitchen but never known that Fannie Farmer was a real person. This is an obviously fictionalized story, but it does include some actual quotes from Farmer's early cookbook. Nancy Carpenter's illustrations combine Victorian clip art with her own drawings. Not a biography, but a fun introduction to the name of Fannie Farmer and a story about how a young girl gains confidence in the kitchen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute book, but historically inaccurate
Hopkinson has written a clever picture book incorporating tasty recipes, but take the details of Fannie Farmer's life with a grain of salt. Hopkinson has altered the facts to serve her story.

Farmer's first cookbook was an update of a cookbook, written by one of her predecessors at the Boston Cooking School, which already incorporated precise measurement using standard measuring cups and spoons. Farmer's contribution was "level" measurement (as suggested by Marcia) and kitchen-testing of all the recipes by the school's students and faculty.

Read "Fannie in the Kitchen" to your child as an introduction to Fannie Farmer. Then read "Perfection Salad" by Laura Shapiro to learn the true story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delicious book!
What a wonderful book this is! Nancy Carpenter has worked magic with her art. Kids just love the little touches, like the mother licking the bowl. This book got a Child Magazine Award and a Parenting Magazine Award, too. I have used it in classrooms to talk to students about cooking, measuring and how people used to cook. One of the best books of 2001!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An inviting beginner's guide
Marcia is trying to help her mother cook, but is doing a terrible job until Fannie Farmer steps in and teaches her about cooking. Nancy Carpenter's whimsical drawings accompany Fannie's lessons in this inviting beginner's guide to both cooking and how Fannie Farmer invented the recipe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Book!
Hasty Puddings...is a TERRIFIC book for both adults and kids, in or out of the classroom. I found the history absolutely fascinating and the recipes are classics and well worth having in any kitchen or classroom. Don't miss this book...it's a wonderful blend of history and recipes!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for hands-on learning.
This book is an excellent way to teach history through hands-on activities. Kids will not even realize they are learning about our colonial history while they are reading this fascinating account of the food eaten during this time period. Kids will learn about the dangers of fireplace cooking (many women burned to death because their dresses would catch on fire), the origins of "Soul Food", and the paramount importance of the Native Americans to the survival of the first colonists. It it written for nine to twelve year-olds so it fits perfect with the fifth grade social studies curriculum but my eighth grade students also love it. Students can use it for their eighth or fifth grade US History project presentations. They can present the history of colonial cooking while serving Johnnycakes or Peanut Soup.

2-0 out of 5 stars quick read on the basics but not always accurate
This is a basic and simple cook book for children. It makes a nice quick read for kids and adults. Unfortunatly not all the information is accurate. In a few of the passages you will find the "politically correct" version of history slipping into place. For a quick lesson in colonial food it does an okay job, but for any type of true indepth look- look elsewhere. ... Read more

Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden delights in the wondrous discoveries of lonely Mary Lennox as she slowly helps bring an abandoned garden back to life. It also delights in good food and a robust appetite, and the health and strength they can bring. Written at a time when many children were going hungry and even starving, Burnett's beloved story celebrates the magic of fresh air, new milk, homemade currant buns, and hearty, simple fare.

Inside the pages of this cookbook are recipes for Mary's favorite foods, in and out of the garden, from porridge to roasted potatoes and eggs, all inspired by The Secret Gardenand all adapted by chef and culinary historian Amy Coder from traditional Victorian recipes. Ms. Coder has supplemented these simple, wholesome recipes with fascinating tidbits on Victorian foods and Victorian eating customs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent recipe book, and an excellent Kirsten book
This delightful cookbook is part of the American Girls Pastimes series, and focuses on the sort of recipes that would have been used during the time of Kirsten Larson, 1854. The book begins with some historical notes on pioneer kitchens and eating, and includes a short prayer in Swedish (which my eleven-year-old daughter is trying to memorize). Then the book launches into the recipes. First comes breakfast with homemade sausage patties, hard-boiled eggs (and how to serve), Swedish rice porridge, round rye bread (all hand made), homemade butter, and ginger cookies. Next comes dinner with baked ham slice, Swedish potatoes (better than scalloped potatoes!), cabbage and apple salad, fruit soup, and Swedish almond rusks. Then comes favorite foods, which includes potato soup, Swedish meatballs, fresh applesause, Swedish pancakes, St. Lucia buns, and Pepparkakor cookies (ginger cookies, a traditional Christmas treat, but good anytime). The final chapter is on planning a pioneer party.

This is a very good recipe book. The recipes in here are all easily within the ability of a youngster who is guided by an adult with even moderate experience in the kitchen; no special tools are need. My daughter already made the Swedish pancakes (yum!), and is planning a Swedish meal (at which she'll recite the prayer). I can't wait.

This is a very nice book, an excellent recipe book, and an excellent addition to your Kirsten library.
