Book Description

Lin Wellford, the original "rock artist" shows kids how to create amazing creatures, incredible toys and wild gifts for their friends and family. All it takes is some paint, a few rocks and a little imagination! Easy-to-follow pictures and instructions show kids how to turn stones into everything from racecars and lizards to teddy bears and flowers!

They'll learn how to draw each design on a rock with a pencil, then paint the details in whatever colors they choose. Kids can decorate their rooms, make doorstops or bookends, or just paint something for fun. They can make each project look just like the real thing or wild and wacky. The choice is theirs-and so is the fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginning or low-skill painters!
This is a great book for people who aren't really very good at painting. Of course the ideas, patterns and methods would work for anyone, but it also shows you step-by-step which color to use, what to draw on the rock, etc. The little rock cars and rock town are darling and the lizards are cute and very realistic. This would be a fun summer project to do with your kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars How shall we say... NOT JUST FOR KIDS!
This book is perfect for beginning painters of all ages! Painting on Rocks for Kids could be especially useful for teachers, Scout leaders, youth activity directors and anyone who enjoys helping children explore their own emerging creativity. If you think about it... Rock painting provides an inexpensive and exciting art activity that builds painting skills. If you wanted to... you could even sell them. (like I do!)

Something I like especially in this book are the lizards... they are not shown on the cover of the book but they are the cutest... I would have bought the book even if the only thing it taught you was the lizards... (the lizards really look like they are sitting on the rock! This book is worth several times what Amazon.com is charging. You will love it... be careful though... people have a bad habit of borrowing this book and forgeting to return it. YES, this book is that GOOD! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked this one also
I checked out quite a few books on knitting so I could decide what to purchase. I'm an adult but my 5 year old son decided he wanted to knit too when he saw the knitting needles as potential weapons and the beautiful colored yarns. I think this is great! I am also going to purchase "Kids Knitting" by Falick and "The Stitch and B______" (I'm not sure I can say the name for a female dog here. This last book might not be appropriate for kids. The top 2 would be great ones for a 12 year old or adult. I liked the Kids Knitting book because there were pictures of boys knitting. I'm amazed but the little guy is actually knitting...some weird looking stitches, but he's having a great time and is very proud of his little strips.

5-0 out of 5 stars DIDNT BUY BUT WANT TO BUY......PLS GIVE UR COMMENTS TO ME!!!
im a 11 year old girl(birthday coming soon, and will be turning 12)whose family is going to korea soon...im afraid that in korea,i wont have anything to do. that was when my father suggested for me to start up knitting...that sure aroused me...i ended up in this web searching for knitting set, and a knitting bk cheap and teaches me the basics to the 'master skill'...this is the first bk that costs 8+....but im afraid that it is very simple. remember? i want one that teaches me from basics to 'master skills'...pls, give me ur comments by writing a 'review' to me here....hope to hear as soon as possible from you guys out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for adults too!
I also ended up buying this after checking it out from the library first. I couldn't decide between this and Kids Knitting by Melanie Falick so I got both for a 10-year-old. Kids Knitting has some beautiful color pictures and more projects but Kid's Easy Knitting has the basics and is more reasonably priced for someone you're not sure will continue to knit. Each has strengths and weaknesses in how they explain techniques; if you don't understand how they're explaining it in one book, it's helpful to look at the other one. I used both when I couldn't understand the information in "adult" knitting books when I first started knitting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids, honey
I checked this book out of the library yesterday and now I'm here adding it to my shopping cart. That's how much I like this book.

I am a beginning knitter, and want to teach my kids how to knit. I also was looking for some easy-as-pie projects. This is the book for me. It has goofy little pictures and simple instructions that are aimed twords kids, but I get the feeling that they are directed twords adults, too. This would be a great beginner book for ANY knitter. It doesn't talk down to you like some of the adult teaching books and it doesn't leave you with patterns that are outrageously beyond your comprehension to knit.

This book, along with some knitting supplies, would be a great gift for any child. (Or adult) ... Read more

Great science projects. We made the hover craft and had hover craft races with my sons 4th grade class. The kids learned about science and had a wonderful time. This is my sons favorite book....and mine too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas
This book shows alot of old standbys but it also includes some hairstyles that I had no idea where to even begin. The instructions are very well laid out. Also, the directions they give for making bows are so clear that I can't wait to get started!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom of 4 girls...
I purchased this guide for myself. It's written for the older child and parents alike. I purchased it because I always envied and admired the "popular" girls in school with the amazing stlyes and marveled at how they got them. Now, I know and I can create those fabulous looks for my own daughters. The instructions are easy to understand and the skills required for bow-making are simple. I made the balloon clip and it was a BIG HIT at school...both kids and teachers commented on the cool clip in my daughter's hair. Most importantly, it was fun for both of us. A definite must-have for Mom's of girls with ANY length of hair!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Instructions!
Although it is written with children in mind, I'm a mother of two with very long hair and not much time to fix it. The ideas were great and the instructions were very easy to follow. These designs look cute on little girls, but look very sophisticated on women. Great book for beginners, or anyone looking for a few fresh ideas for braids.

5-0 out of 5 stars French-braids (and more) For Dummies!!!
I've tried several times over the years to learn to french braid. I learned to braid my granddaughter's hair in 10 minutes with this book. Lots of clever hairstyles to try besides french-braiding. Great book with easy-to-follow illustrations. Durable high-gloss pages. Well worth the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Braids and Bows
I was look for a book teaching and showing different kinds of braiding the hair; from french braid, corn rows, and extentions. But I can't tell what is really in this book. I don't know if it covers some of the things I'm looking for or none of what I'm looking for. If there were pictures of the kinds of braids it was covering or even a discription of what kind on braids are in here or even a back cover review of what is in this book. But sorrifully NO. Therefore I put down the unknown content book; for I don't like buying anything in the dark. And I'll move on look for the author that did tell me what is in the book and showing me pictures. Until then rethink about sharing more about what is in the book and even about you. ... Read more

As every parent knows, licensed Harry Potter merchandise has exploded on the marketplace, but now young wizard hopefuls can learn how to make their very own magic gear with The Book of Wizard Craft. Although this inventive and engaging volume bears no actual connection to the mighty Master Potter, many of the projects were clearly inspired by his adventures and attributes. Seems just about everyone is jumping on the wizard-craze bandwagon these days, but this spirited incarnation is done with skill.

Wishing to pass along his 600 year's worth of arcane lore, the ancient wizard behind this creative collection shares his secrets for wizard regalia (bejeweled turban, hourglass pendant, magic cloak, wands, staffs, and the obligatory robe), the decorative arts (magic carpet, crystal ball, celestial sheets), horticulture (fairy circle, carnivorous-plant terrarium), animal husbandry (dragon scales, eye of newt, apothecary carry-all), book arts (secret journal, invisible inks, quill pen), astronomy (constellation caster), alchemy (magic potions galore), and amusement (party ideas, decorations, spooky edibles), and much more. Bewitching painted illustrations add sprightly fun and help to further clarify relatively good directions. Even kids who want nothing to do with sorcery in the craft room will enjoy reading the magical myths, international legends, and witchy stories. --Amy Handy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids, either!
I'm 28 years old. I have no children. I don't even have any small children anywhere in my immediate family. And here I am, buying and writing a gushing torrent of praise for a children's book.

This is the best book in the whole world. No, really. Okay, except maybe the proper Harry Potter books, but. It's still a darn fine book.

The crystal ball lamp is really what I'm itching to make. Meanwhile, I've been busying myself with churning out wizard money, rings, and baby unicorn horns to dole out to Potter-loving friends. And you bet I'm going to try the Every Flavor Be--ah, I mean, All Flavors Gumdrops recipe posthaste. Can't wait to see the look on my boss's face when I slip him a tabasco one. Ahem.

Kids WILL need help from grownups for most of this stuff, but that's not a bad thing. And, if I may make a suggestion: if you help your kids whip up a batch of Dragon Blood, put it in little plastic bottles from the craft store--and glue the caps on. Messy stuff

5-0 out of 5 stars You, Too, Can Be a Hogwarts Student
... Or at least pretend to be! (NOTE: This is not a Harry Potter book, although it's certainly riding his "robe-tails.")

Not only does this book have some really neat and practical projects (container herb garden), but also has some pretty icky, kids-love-it projects like a terrarium for carnivorus plants and a mold garden. You can make your own wizard's robe, invisible ink (that you can use with your newly-made quill pen), and sew your own journal. The recipes include gumdrops, rock candy, and homemade slime (!). There's bits of history and folklore in it, too, just in case you get tired of making all this great stuff and want to read a while.

The illustrations are wonderful, the writing is engaging, and it has a ribbon bookmark (okay, it may be a silly thing to mention, but I love ribbon bookmarks). This is a very entertaining book. Many of the projects would lend themselves nicely to a theme party, and there are a few suggestions for that, too. Your Harry fan will have a *blast* with the ideas in this book. I can't wait to some of them with my own little HP fan...

5-0 out of 5 stars My Children Wanted to Start Right Away!!
This book is fantastic. We received the book today in the mail. My two children and I looked at the book from cover to cover. They told me they want to start tomorrow on making the crafts that are in the book.

This book is perfect for Harry Potter fans. From robes, to wands, potions, hiding boxes, crystal balls..you name it.

The way the author has written this book is funny. You can just feel the author enjoyed writing this book.

My children loved it as soon as I turned the first page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book EVER!
I personally would recommend this book to anybody, Harry Potter fan or not. This is a great book, and it tells how to make two different kinds of wands, robes, cloaks, crystal balls, potions, a wizard's hat, turban, and more! It also tells how to make a wizard party, etc.

I got this book for my birthday about two years ago, and I've read it through at least ten times since then. If I have nothing to do, I just sit down and read it. It's got lots of stories, so if you just feel like reading, it's the right book.

I hope this was helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Only the Best Book the Entire Universe! (well, almost)
I am thirteen years old and consider myself sort of above most little kids' books. However, this book was so incredibly neat, here I am writing this review! It contains everything you want to know about how to pretend to be a wizard. I haven't acually tried all the things yet, but just siting there, looking at the artwork is awesome. It has everything from food to dragonsblood to mythology to wizard parties to a powder that smokes when you rub it. One should not be restrained by the age sugjestions-I want every fantasy-lover I know to READ THIS BOOK! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book of exuberant charm
Sure, it might be a little outdated, but it's a great glimpse into a past time. And today's kids would probably enjoy the chance to do some old-fashioned things described in this book, like making their own hammock or refurbishing some old furniture. The instructions for painting and drawing and basic and useful, and many of the ideas presented are things forgotten about and could stand resurrection. Lots of attention paid to girls getting exercise and being healthy, contrary to modern perceptions of Victorian women. Good for parents and teachers, and kids who are fond of history and open to old-fashioned ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars A 1887 Gem!
For mothers who are not ashamed to have their young girls grow up knowing "feminine" arts, this book is a gem! There are some complicated projects (hammock making) which most of us would not have time or inclination to do, but others (corn husk dolls, botanic art, flower pressing, and home-made candy recipes) which any mother could help even very young daughters accomplish. In addition to the projects resource that it is, the book is a homey, nostalgic history of the things which used to occupy the time of young women preparing for homekeeping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Low tech fun for children of all decades.
I used this book when a child. I used my mother's copy and never was bored during the long hot summer days before air conditioning in the 1950's. The partner book, American Boy's Handybook is also fun. Wow, what resources for parents and kids (especially for home schoolers and scout leaders)!

5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air!
Originally published in 1887. Not politically correct! And lots of fun. My daughters and I can learn how to: make Easter egg dolls; weave a rope net for lawn tennis or a hammock; make May-baskets to hang on neighbors' and friends' doors; plan a picnic, burgoo, or corn-roast; make our own daytime "fireworks" for Independence Day; make leaf prints, cornhusk dolls, flower sprays and a variety of seasonal garlands; host autumn nutting parties; understand the decorative language of flowers and heraldry; furnish a seaside cottage with beach-gathered items; and make fairy-dancer boxes and sachets to give as Christmas gifts. This book shows girls how to: be creative, curious, and crafty; make lots of fun out of very little material; notice nature and nurture their bodies, minds, and spirits. This book is a marvelous antidote to everything that irks me about the end of THIS century. A breath of fresh air. ... Read more

Book Description

Make the same pioneer crafts that Laura did!

In her beloved Little House books, Laura Ingalls Wilder tells of her pioneer childhood growing up on the frontier. Because the Ingallses often lived far away from any stores, and because they had little money, Laura and her family had to make most of their own household items, using whatever materials were available. Now, with MY LITTLE HOUSE CRAFTS BOOK, you can share a part of Laura's pioneer days by learning how to make the same things that she and her family made for their little homes on the frontier. Inside this book are easy, step-by-step instructions for 18 crafts taken straight from the pages of Laura's Little House books. All you need to get started are a few simple supplies, and you're on your way to making fun and useful pioneer crafts that you'll cherish forever.

3-0 out of 5 stars A less-than-respectful treatment of the skilled crafts...
I know that Carolyn Collins and Mary Collier wanted to keep their craft projects as simple as possible, so that they would be fun for our TV-glutted, skill-deprived youngsters. But in doing so, they curtailled themselves from creating a masterpiece of historical analysis like The Little House Cookbook.
How about showing some of the REAL projects that we read about in the Little House books, like the dresses that Laura and Mary laid out by drafting patterns on old newspaper, or the cabinetry that Almanzo built to delight his wife?
Aside from very young children, the handy people described in the Little House books manufactured items that were more useful and complex than Brownie Scout camp crafts. That it bears the "Little House" brand name does not separate this book from the pack.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rather Disappointing, Actually.
I'd hoped for a nice selection of crafts. While a few of the items listed are interesting and "crafty" (the quilt, bead crafts, straw hat, hood), most are defintely stretching the definition. I wouldn't consider a garden or a loaf of bread to be a 'craft'... and does anyone REALLY need instructions to figure out how to make a button string? The original Little House books explain quite well how to make the orange flower and button lamp. (And what you'd do with a decorative button lamp is a puzzle to me anyway.) We learn how to make the tassles for Mary's bedshoes, but there are no instructions for making the shoes themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teacher's View for My Little House Craft Book
This book is a great opportunity to learn about crafts and stories through the eyes and hands of a pioneer child. Children will enjoy the stories from Laura Ingles Wilder. With each story, a craft is illustrated with colorful pictures and detailed step by step instructions that are very easy to follow. A great teaching tool and a good book to add to your shelf. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Whoops, bigtime!
If you haven't already dismissed my comment from yesterday, please do. If it's too late, please print this apology. I feel like such a dope! William Henry Channing is the nephew of William Ellery Channing. I was so sure that Wm. Ellery had written the poem, that I wrote my stupid review of a book I absolutely love. I was wrong. William Henry Channing did, in fact, write the poem "My Symphony," and I'm a person who failed to double-check her references before opening her big mouth. Please forgive. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but O Henry
As a big fan of Mary Engelbreit and a big fan of William Ellery Channing, I absolutely love the book, except for one thing: Channing's name is incorrect on the book. His middle name is Ellery, not Henry.

Other than that, the book is wonderful. I don't think this error would bother most people, but it is amazing that Engelbreit and the publisher didn't get it correct...

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it!
My 2-1/2 year old daughter got it as a gift. She absolutely loves it and requests it all the time. She knows many of the words by heart and asks what they mean. She loves the pictures. I never get tired of the beautiful artwork. It's no wonder Mary Englebreit's art is so popular.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure for all ages!
This book is a treasure for all ages.... not just kids. W.H.Channing has written a positive, affirming verse that is wonderfully illustrated by Mary Engelbreit.

This is a book that I often give to others as a gift. It is the gift that keeps on giving...

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 to 8?? 4 to 80 is more like it:)
I was at the book store browsing for books for my two year old daughter and came across 'My Symphony'. I was drawn to the lovely art on the cover so opened it up and began to read. The poem by W.H. Channing is superb. Simple, elegant, meaningful, touching, humorous, and leaves a lasting impression. (To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable; and wealthy not rich, etc). The art work by Mary Engelbreit is a wonderful compliment, page by page, for the poem. As a childrens book I wasn't so certain, but I bought it for myself anyway. I treasure books that inspire me to be my best and this is a graceful and simple version of that. But I still wasn't sure that my daughter, a two year old, would be ready for a book like this. I tried it on her anyway, even though she is a fair amount younger than the four years old suggested. She loves it. She loves the illustrations, she works excitedly to understand the concepts and for the most part gets them. Only the closing lines that refer to spirituality and 'my symphony' lost her and she enjoyed the illustrations anyway. I wasn't an Engelbreit fan at all. My only encounter with her prior to this book was a birthday card I received called 'the queen of everything'. Cute card for sure, but I wasn't aware that the artist illustrated books. Now I adore her work. I ordered her christmas book 'Believe' and I am excited for it to arrive. Engelbreits art seems perfectly suited for the holiday season - traditional and pure, yet fun and fanciful at the same time. I guess you can tell I really liked this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 100% of kids are capable of centering clay
My name is Rosalie Waxman and I am fifteen years old. I have been going to Kevin's studio for about 10 years and I have succesfully learned how to center clay. The pictures and diagrams written in the book are on the walls of his studio as a helpful reminder to kids learning how to throw. I learned how to throw within a few weeks of starting classes, as did every other kid in the class who had a desire to learn. I started off centering a few pounds of clay and eventually worked up to about 20 pounds of clay as I got more comfortable throwing. ... This book is extremely helpful, and has some great ideas for ceramic projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book to inspire childrens' development!
This book replicates the exceptional environment that exists in the Kids 'N' Clay Pottery Studio. The opportunity for kids to explore their creative intelligence, problem solving capacity and social interaction skills is facilitated by the creative process as documented in this book. The book sets up the projects, learning scenarios and technical (easy) aspects of creating the same kind of nurturing child development environment in your home or classroom. HIGHLY recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book to help teach
The book is full of great projects for kids on the wheel and handbuilders. Most importantly are the helpful instructions on how to teach the wheel thowing process. I gave copies of this book to several new after-school teacher's assistants so that they could understand the teaching process better. It definitely helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for kids!
As a student of Kevin Nierman's for ten years, since the age of eight, I have had the good fortune to be exposed to his wonderful teaching style. Kevin has the natural ability bring each child's inner creativity to the surface. He has challenged teaching conventions by allowing young kids to do whatever they want with clay, including throwing on the wheel -- and he has proved that young children can succeed and have fun working on the wheel. More importantly, he knows how to make working with clay FUN!

The Kids 'N' Clay book brings Kevin's experience and natural teaching ability into a format accessible to all. This book is filled with tips and ideas, a wonderful aid for kids who have any kind of artistic inclination. Although it is not necessarily intended to be a beginner's manual, it can be an excellent supplement to any art classes your child may already be taking. It is a helpful and fun guide to the wonderful creative world of clay.

5-0 out of 5 stars thank you
what a great book my child has created the greatest pieces and has seemed to access some wonderful part of himself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My First Sewing Machine -A Pleasant Surprise!
This book was purchased for my 9 year old granddaughter. She was totally involved as we browsed the pages. The colorful layout and simple explanations encouraged her to continue reading and learning. The practice patterns for "steering" the sewing machine are an excellent idea. The games maintained her interest and encouraged skill-building. The easy-to-make crafts will keep her busy and make wonderful presents for her friends. As a long time sewer and grandmother of eleven I highly recommend My First Sewing Machine Book!

Book Description

Whether it's a city park, a suburban backyard, a farmer's field, or the sandy seashore, there's a treasure trove of natural art materials out there. Twigs, vines, pinecones, flowers, leaves, rocks, shells, moss, feathers - they're all gifts of the earth. In NATURE'S ART BOX, writer, gardener, and nature-crafter Laura C. Martin offers 65 cool projects kids will love to make, using materials they can find just about anywhere. She explains how to make paints and inks from flowers and other plants; how to use shells, moss, seedpods, and cones to embellish large objects; how to build elf-sized furniture; how to decorate picture frames, birdhouses, and keepsake boxes with woodland treasures; and how to dig clay, weave vines, and make natural dyes to color T-shirts.

While Martin teaches kids to see the possibilities of the natural world, she also teaches them to respect what the earth offers. She warns them against stripping bark off live trees, plucking every flower in the field, and clearing the ground of every nut and seed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely for grownups, too!
d papercrafter who's fairly new to quilling, so I've been looking for new patterns and ideas. I happened to come across this book in the children's section of my local bookstore, and I loved the gorgeous photos and clear instructions. The ideas are extremely creative and can be adapted in many ways. Having a kit of supplies attached is icing on the cake! In short, I like this book the best out of many books I've perused - including the ones geared toward adults. Definitely worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scrapbook ideas

Best of all, the book comes with everything that you need to complete the projects (even little wiggle eyes). This book is worth twice the cost!!!

I have recommended this book to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! What a great book
I bought this book for my niece but it was so cool I ended up keeping it for myself and buying her another one. The projects are easy to do and hilarious: aliens, bugs and the funniest fish you've ever seen. Finally, quilling projects that are as funny as they are fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for arts and crafts programs
A wonderful book - easy instructions, beautiful projects. Everything is very nicely illustrated that there is little chance for making mistakes. Even a novice crafter can create beautiful twirled paper projects. The book also gives a brief history of filigree or quilling - what Klutz calls "twirling". An excellent resource book for art teachers and therapists. With teacher guidance, children as young as six can re-create the projects in this book. Even with mistakes, the projects come out beautiful! The best Klutz craft book ever! ... Read more
