2-0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love this book...
After reading the editorial review, I thought this would be an entertaining, rhyming book for my 3 yr old (similar to "Piggies in a Polka" by Kathi Appelt). But...

I've read it several times now and just when you've found the rhyme, it evaporates. The awkwardness of the text really impedes the storyline and some editing is warranted. The story tries to flow, but gets caught in the muck of the barnyard. This could mostly be forgiven with great illustrations, but the soft, washed-out water colours with their many "black outlines" are busy and don't do justice to the subject; it's a limited colour palette that tries to aspire to the likes of Ian Falconer's Olivia, but falls short. My child lost interest after the second page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable
When Angelina Ballerina finds out that her ballet school will be putting on a performance for the Princess of Mouseland, she couldn't be more excited. She stays up all night practicing and practicing, only to wake up feeling sick, and unable to dance. However, she does try, and ends up with only a chorus part in the performance. Disappointed, she vows never to attend ballet school again, until her Mother tells her to be happy with the part that she has. Agreeing, Angelina Ballerina goes back to ballet school only to save the day once again.

ANGELINA AND THE PRINCESS is an adorable addition to the ANGELINA BALLERINA book series. As always, Helen Craig's illustrations are breathtaking, and will capture the heart's of all readers, young and old, as will the wonderful, moral-building story by Katharine Holabird. A must-have for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter and I both love this book!
"Angelina and the Princess" is the first of the Angelina series my daughter and I have, but we plan to get the rest as we love this so much. Angelina is a tiny white mouse who yearns to be feminine and sweet, but is sometimes headstrong and silly--just like most girls I know (including my five-year old daughter!). Angelina has a dance recital coming up and she is pining away for a major role. However, as she's sick on the day of auditions, she doesn't do well and in fact, barely is able to crawl back home and into her worried mother's arms. She knows she did poorly, and her mother admits as much too, which brings me to one of the things I love about this book--there's no sugar-coating the fact that Angelina has gotten herself into a pickle. It's a storybook, and a fantasy at that, but it's realistic enough to keep the edge off the sweetness.

Angelina is counseled by her mother to do her very best. I don't want to give away the ending, but by keeping a cheerful attitude and trying to do her best for the whole dance company, Angelina is amply rewarded. It's a story with a moral, but the moral isn't presented in a sickeningly sweet way.

The illustrations by Helen Craig are truly a treat. Set vaguely in a Victorian England mousedom, they depict tiny cottages with climbing vines, drapey dresses with floral prints, tiaras, bouquets, adorable furniture, and so on. Three cheers to both Helen Craig and author Katharine Holabird for a book which is a joy to read and great fun to peruse just for the illustrations alone!

4-0 out of 5 stars A supremely lovable book
In this sequel to Angelina Ballerina, Angelina learns that her ballet school is to put on a performance for the Princess of Mouseland. Angelina is crushed, though, when she gets sick in time for the tryouts. Forced to settle for a supporting role, she takes her mother's advice and determines to do her best at the part she is given. This is the story of Angelina's triumph!

Once again the unbeatable duo of Katharine Holabird (author) and Helen Craig (illustrator) combine to create a supremely lovable book. My ten-year-old daughter tore through this book, thoroughly enjoying the story. Yes, it wasn't a challenge to her reading ability, but she loved the story, and I appreciate any book that keeps her reading! Both my daughter and I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Favorite Books for Little Girls
I bought this book for my nieces (three and four) who started their ballet lessons. I first hesitated because Angelina was a mouse who does not look like Mickey Mouse, instead looks rather like a real mouse, but all the pictures are so wonderfully detailed and cute. Not only my nieces love the story, but they are also interested in other things in the pictures (e.g. posters and toys in Angelina's bedroom etc). They have been reading it over and over, and each time they report me the things they noticed in the pictures. I am not sure if it is recommandable for little boys for the girly storyline, yet I am sure it is a great book for girls, especially who loves ballet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angelina and the Princess
My four and one half year old girl/boy twins and I read this story tonight. It is a wonderful sequel to Angelina the Ballerina. Even my son was enchanted by Angelina's persistance. When Angelina is too sick to compete for the lead in a ballet before the Princess, she doesn't give up. She continues to work hard and her perseverance leads to a happy ending. This author has a good message for one and all in this book and in her other Angelina story, Angelina Ballerina. We will read and root for Angelina over and over again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a little un-realistic
I enjoyed this book. It had a good plot and was entertaining. Heather puts on a ballet costume and toe shoes and then is transported to New York to dance in a ballet by a magic mirror. I dance ballet and am on pointe myself and found a couple faults in the story. Heather lies to her friends about being on pointe but when she puts on the toe shoes in the attic she dances almost flawlessly. In real life though it takes months to dance without the support of a barre. Then her friend Jillian helps her break in her shoes with a hammer, but you're supposed to break them in by dancing in them and gently bending the soles of the shoes. Breaking them in any other ways could permently damage them. I would still recomend the book, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book especially for people who do ballet.
I think this book is one of the best books I have read. It's about Heather going to the attic and finding herself as a guest star in Sleeping Beauty. She sprains her ankle,so she can't dance. In the end,she learns a lesson. I do ballet myself, but I'm not on toe yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Emotional for girls
Heather's Aunt is the star in the Sleeping Beauty, and sends enough tickets for her family. Heather promises her friends tickets for the ballet. But oh no! The tickets are all sold out. Heather sets aside that problem. She puts on pink tights,a tutu, and point shoes- you guessed it! A ballerina. She walks through the mirror and finds herself the star of Sleeping Beauty. During rehersal, she slips on a jete and sprains her ankle! She telling her friend, Jillian huge lies. She's in a tough situation, but being Heather manages confessing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice
This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Felicity Merriman, a nine-year-old girl living in the America of 1774. In this book, when Felicity's lessons in being a gentlewoman turn to dancing, she quickly finds that her big, ugly shoes are stepping all over the other girls' feet. Thinking that her shoes are the problem, Felicity bribes her little sister into lending Felicity her beautiful little shoes. But, is the problem really with the shoes?

This is another very good Felicity book, one with a nice story and a nice lesson. The story does not grab the reader, focusing as it does on such a small problem, but it is enjoyable nonetheless. And, Dan Andreasen's illustrations are excellent, and help to make this book what it is. Overall, my daughter and I both enjoyed this book, and recommend it to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the American Girl short story books!!!
Well written book about my favorite American Girl, Felicity Merriman. This story shows Felicity's character as it was developed in the main series. She is so full of life and is a joy to read about. Her relationships with her sister and parents comes through in this short book. The characters are so vividly described.

I bought this for my 8 year old daughter, but definitely enjoyed it as much myself! She has read it three times and loved it.
