4-0 out of 5 stars Great short resource for students
I give this four stars only because many of the days don't include anything beyond the scripture passage and a quote. The days that do, however, provide excellent devotional thoughts. Along with this, the entire framework of the Bible is covered in only minutes a day. What more can be expected of one book (outside of the Bible itself?).

The best way to use this resource is to study it in a group with the curriculum written by the author available at simplyyouthministry.com. Use this with your class and the impact will be much greater.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to get to know God's Word...
I got this book when I started to deepen my faith and found it as a great way to learn the Bible. Every day, there is a story from the Bible that includes scriptures to look up that apply to the story and a fun thing such a verse to memorize or a profile on a person in the Bible. I have since passed it down to my sister and she reads it every day. A great book with great intentions.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1 minute Bible 4 students
I am in my early forties and just found a type of Bible that I really enjoy reading. It is not easy to read just one study a day since you want to continue reading. Would recommend to those who want to start reading the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best devotional I have ever read
I am a middle schooler and I read it every day. my church friends read it every day and like it. This is a very good way to learn the bible in 1 year and be able to read it year after year. my youth paster gave this to me because he thinks its a good way to read the bible. this book only does the main points of the bible but at the bottem of each scripture it show verse that are realated to that scripture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must buy!!!
I am a youth pastor and have used the one-minute Bible with my teenagers. They love it! For those of them that struggle with reading the Bible on a daily basis, this is a great tool to start a lifelong habit of doing so! Doug Fields is concerned about teenagers having Scripture in their lives, and so am I! Don't miss out on this great tool! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle Encouragement for Teens to Be Closer to God
Teenagers often feel left out, like a nobody with no future. For that reason, the story of Jabez (whose mother named him "pain") should be relevant and appealing. From this unpleasant beginning, Jabez came to receive many blessings from God. In this book, Dr. Wilkinson makes the case that if God is there for unpopular nobodies like Jabez, He must be there for all of us!

Dr. Wilkinson has a nice manner for speaking to teenagers. He recalls his own thoughts and hopes during the teenage years. He also relates stories of how teenagers have made an enormous difference for God in assisting adults and other teens. Suddenly, you will feel like someone is talking to you who cares about you, as God does.

"This little book starts with everything we put in the original, bestselling The Prayer of Jabez . . . ." " . . . [T]hen we ask the question: If God wanted to change the world with a teenager like you, how would He want you to pray?"

The challenge also goes out in this form: "Are you ready to do one thing that could change the rest of your life?"

As much as the Bible teaches me, I find that I learn even more by hearing about the interpretations that others make of the Bible. Those interpretations are most beneficial when they include witnessing one's own experiences. Dr. Wilkinson has provided us with many soulful insights from 30 years of reciting a little-noticed Old Testament prayer in this inspiring book.

One reason that it is nice to hear what others say about the Bible is that some of them read Hebrew, which I do not. Knowing what the original text said should provide more clues to its precise meaning. Dr. Wilkinson has provided insights from the Hebrew texts to help us understand what the translations mean.

The Prayer of Jabez is found in 1 Chronicles 4:10 following a brief introduction of Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4:9. This text is in the middle of a long list of about 500 Hebrew names beginning with Adam in providing a geneology. The casual Bible reader might never notice this material.

Since there is so little text, the plain meaning of what is found here can certainly be confusing. "Jabez" means "pain" in Hebrew. Jabez was named this by his mother "Because I bore him in pain." Since almost all babies bring pain to their mothers, it is hard to know exactly what was different about Jabez, if anything.

In this book, there is a nice emphasis on the special problems a teenager would have if his name was Pain.

Jabez is remembered for having his prayer answered. The prayer was: "Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!"

Dr. Wilkinson provides several perspectives on this prayer that added much to my understanding of the Scripture. First, Mr. Wilkinson interprets this as meaning that the person praying is asking to play a bigger role in achieving God's purposes. That was a new thought for me. I tend to feel that each of us is kept pretty busy trying to do God's will in whatever roles we already have. How can we do more? Obviously, only with God's help. By taking on even larger roles, we probably move closer to a state of humility by knowing that we cannot possibly succeed without Divine guidance and assistance. So what seems like a prideful thing actually turns out to be the opposite. What is your reaction to that?

Second, I was startled a few years ago to hear a group of rabbis and ministers talk about how the traditional concept of the moral life was to never be tempted. I feel tempted all of the time, and overcome temptations only after sincere struggles. Dr. Wilkinson points out that the best way to avoid evil is not to be tempted in the first place. "Without temptation, we will not sin." So this text encouraged me to ask even more for being kept away from evil. Naturally, the Lord's Prayer does that, but this important point had been partially lost on me until I read this book.

Beyond those Biblical insights, I also learned from Mr. Wilkinson's experiences. He takes on big tasks, uses the Jabez prayer, and keeps track of how things work out. I, too, believe in the power of prayer. It had never occurred to me to keep a journal about my experiences with prayer. I am sure that there is much to be learned.

My own interpretation of the book and the prayer is that it is just another example of God's listening to and answering our prayers. So I felt encouraged to pray, rather than to use only this specific prayer. I did find myself revising some prayers that I am fond of to incorporate elements of the Jabez prayer.

There is a good section that points out that today we can also call on Jesus and the Holy Spirit, which were not available to Jabez.

Dr. Wilkinson also sets a good example that I intend to follow. He walks up to strangers and says, "How can I help you?" Now, I do that with people who call me on the telephone and people I work with. It had never occurred to me to do so with strangers, but it is probably more helpful with strangers. I look forward to the experiences I will have as a result.

If you are like me, it will be hard to tell where Biblical interpretation ends and witnessing begins in this book. I'm not sure it's all that important to draw a line between them. The key thing is to feel closer to God and God's wisdom and love. I certainly did after reading The Prayer of Jabez for Teens.

The book ends with a fine study guide that contains the big ideas of each chapter and some questions for bringing the lessons home to each reader.

I pray that you and your family will too! What else can you pray for that may serve God's purposes in more ways that you have not considered before?

5-0 out of 5 stars *Prayer of a teen-age girl*
The Prayer of Jebez for Teens (from The Breakthrough Series, by Bruce Wilkinson) is a definite compliment to its predecessor, The Prayer of Jebez. Through this small, 116-page book, Dr. Wilkinson goes into great detail on the prayer a man from the Old Testament of the Bible made. Also mentioned in this entertaining, enlightening book is how making this man's (Jebez) prayer your own will impact your life and how it influenced other's lives as well. Finally, during this review, I will mention how the author was blessed by praying Jebez's prayer and how I believe it has helped me.
The account of Jebez is found in I Chronicles 4:9-10, amid the numerous genealogies that can make even the strongest of Believers want to skip the book entirely. It is important to note that Jebez never had been (and never was again) mentioned at all in the Word of God. Yet, he and his prayer are noteworthy. His time as "man of the hour" is recorded, as follows: "Jebez was more honorable than his bothers, and his mother named him Jebez saying,
'Because I bore him with pain.'
Now Jebez called on the God of Israel, saying,
'Oh, that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from
harm, that it may not pain me!'
And God granted him what he requested."
One way we can see that Jebez was blessed is that he was 1) spoken of in God's Word, and 2) in the family line of Jesus Christ. The author bases his writing of The Prayer of Jebez for Teens around I Chronicles 4:10.
Before and after publishing his beliefs on this portion of Scripture, Bruce Wilkinson spoke at numerous colleges and seminars encouraging teens and adults to pray this prayer themselves. Many wrote to him explaining the amazing miracles God had been doing in their lives. One was from a lady named Sara who states, "...you have no idea how shy I am, but let me tell you what's happening on my campus since I began to ask God for a larger life..." She then continues her testimony reporting her leading to the Lord two of her friends and her belief that another, who had spoken to Sara about some things that had been on her mind, was going to be the next for salvation. One important entity to observe is the fact that the author records his own experiences relating to praying the Jebez prayer. Dr. Bruce Wilkinson is a talented writer who "practices what he preaches," if you will. He gave the statistical testimony that he began his ministry with 25 conferences a year and it has grown to 50 conferences each weekend. The Lord has blessed him and others in many ways that you must read to learn of. In my own life, I have prayed a similar prayer: "God, please bless me most definitely! And give me more opportunities to tell everyone about You, and please be with me every day of my life. Keep me from harm and temptation so that I won't get hurt/embarrassed and neither will anyone else." Since I read the original The Prayer of Jebez and The Prayer of Jebez for Teens I've told one person about Christ, several about this book, and many people of the churches I attend and their ministries. I hope and pray that God can and will use both my strengths and my weaknesses to glorify him that my life might give even a glimmer of a reflection of His glorious radiance. Please meet with God about His will for your life and enjoy finding it with a little help from Bruce Wilkinson's book, The Prayer of Jebez for Teens.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Sprightly, conversational style" with KVJ?
I can understand that a book written in 1962 would quote the Bible from the King James Version. And it's ironic that I'm reading this book to my own children who are about the same age I was when the book was first written.

But I'm disappointed that the publisher didn't update the quotes and hymns to reflect where children are today, perhaps a more "sprightly, conversational"* translation and choruses the kids might hear most Sunday Schools? (* a quote from back cover describing this book)

I'm sure we'll still be able to reap much of what was sown by the author for our children, by paraphrasing the KJV verses and singing simple choruses.

Whither thou goest, let thy buyer bewareth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of the WONDER of the Lord!
I am so impressed with this children's devotional! The language is written to capture a child's attention and hold it. The power and wonder of God is displayed and portrayed throughout the entire book, in every lesson. It is easy for a young child to understand, and deep and meaningful enough to inspire thought in an older child. We are halfway through and will be repeating it again after we are finished.

It begins with Part One: Looking for God, and Part Two: God is Very Great. Each "part" consists of about 5-8 individual lessons on the subject, using people from the Bible to learn from, in how God uses them. Then we are taken through the introduction of sin, God's law, what Jesus did for us, prayer, and several others, ending with Part Fourteen: Things That Are to Happen. Each lesson includes "something to talk about" (questions for the children to answer about the lesson), a related Scripture from the Bible, suggested Bible reading, a hymn to sing that relates to the lesson, and a prayer to say, asking the Lord to help us with those things we learned that day in our lesson.

Needless to point out here, I can't say enough about this devotional. It is a wonderful way to teach your children about God in a thorough and consistant way, and help them to love learning about the Lord and his nature, and what he does for his children. You'll love going through it with your little ones and watching their love and understanding for God grow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Devotional Activity
My boys, ages 5, 7 and 9, and I went through this book over the last year, with each son taking turns reading the associated scripture, reading or singing the hymn (we knew about 1/3 of them) or praying through the closing prayer. It really did cover the basics of the Christian faith and life in more depth than we would normally discuss. I consider this a classic and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars prized resource
I have used this to put together a Sunday School lesson at the last minute. Very conservative, traditional, fundamental view of doctrine. I love it. I am buying copies for all my nieces and nephews whose...parents don't know how to answer their questions about God.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for Children
I had a hard time trying to find a book that could easily communicate, in a child's language, the truths about God and the bible. As a parent, sometimes it's difficult to explain to a small child what we already know. This book does an exceptional job explaining different truths in each story. My children loved hearing the stories each night, and the simple questions at the end of each story stimulated their thinking. I read this book to them each night as they were toddlers and small children. Today, they are teenagers and have an excellent foundation with knowing right from wrong and biblical truths. I highly recommend this book to any parent who wants their child to know God. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Devotional
I have been reading this devotional with my 5 year old daughter every morning. It is wonderful for her. She understands it and it's not a lot for her to take in. Highly recommend this book. When we are done I will probably start over at the beginning again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devotionals that make sense for kids
These devotionals make sense to kids, without talking down to them. They include a bible verse, a devotional message for the day, an affirmation/exercise, and a neat trivia fact. The topics are religious in nature, but very real world, day-to-day stuff... like being a good friend, taking care of yourself, being aware of your thoughts, managing your emotions, respecting other people... stuff even us adults could benefit from reading on a daily basis!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
This devotional is exactly what I had hoped it would be for our five year old. Each topic is a simple, two-page spread with easy to understand explanations. It even includes a "child-sized" application for each day. This is a very age-appropriate devotional for young children. The authors have helped me as a parent to bring simplified biblical truths to my young child in a way she can understand and relate to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable devotional for the young
I've only gotten through the first 30 days of this book with my 4 year old and based on that, would recommend this book.

Each day starts with a bible verse and then goes on with a simple, short section about what the verse is about and what it is trying to teach you. Often times, the author does this by giving an example that a young child could understand. Example: "How do you feel when you see someone getting something you'd like to have? Does it bother you inside, or are you truly happy for them?" The author then continues about how jealousy hurts you (the jealous one) and suggest the child imagine what it would feel like if it were he/she receiving the present and then to switch that excitement over to them. It then directs the child on what to do today to apply the lesson just learned. Each day ends with a section called "My Amazing World" which gives interesting facts or piece of history but it doesn't always relate to the lesson of the day.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that there are some things that my 4 year old has not experienced and therefore cannot relate to. The days that discussed peer preasure and dirty words are two examples. I still find it a valuable tool in teaching my child god's lessons and use each day's devotional as a spring board to discuss how god wants us to live our lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Book !!
Highly recommend !! This is the only book that I have not had to ask and encourage my 10 year old son to read. He loves this book. As a parent, I love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devotions for Boys
I have three sons, and will read this book with each of them as they become ready! I was fortunate to find this book last June, just in time to start a summer devotional program for my oldest son (now 8 and in second grade). This book definitely enriched our summer! The stories are warm. The teachings are based on scripture. The main characters in each of the 365 stories are young boys that all young boys can relate to. They present solutions to issues which most young boys will likely encounter or ponder (kindness, honesty, obedience, faith, loyalty, etc.). At the end of each story is a 'How About You' section which poses questions for discussion between the parent and child. If you keep this open and non-confrontational, then this section can really encourage the child open up and to learn from you by talking, asking questions, and sometimes even make confessions to you. Because these are age-appropriate teachings presented in stories which young boys can identify with, I believe they will have a tremendous chance of impacting our young boys and keeping them on the right path when we as parents cannot be near them.

This is a great resource for parents who want help or additional resources for instilling solid Christian-based morals and decision making in their young boys. Sharing these stories with my son has been such a delight! By the way, he himself absolutely loves this book!!! We have nine more months if we read one story a day, but we will be finished much sooner because he has asked if we can start reading backwards after we finish our daily story (we average about 3 stories a day). P.S. I love to read him the day's story while waiting for his bus in the morning! What a great way to send him off to school! Best of luck. I hope you enjoy this book with your son as much as we do!

4-0 out of 5 stars Devotions for Boys
I purchased this book "sight unseen" from ... some months ago. I was interested in adding some spiritual content to the nightly reading sessions that I have with my two sons (ages 7 and 10.) I had originally intended to merely "tack on" the daily page-long devotional to the end of our sessions. I found, however, that my boys are so eager for this type of instruction, and the little stories are so compelling, insightful, and contemporary, that our 1/2-hour long sessions have been converted completely to the one page, its corresponding scripture verse, and the "How about you..." discussion questions provided. The kids actually remind me if I forget, and beg me to read them the night's selection when I try to defer if I claim I'm too tired! ... Read more

The classic account of the appearances of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje--now updated for the millenium

Like Lourdes and Fatima before it, Medjugorje has become a holy site for worshippers around the world, a place that will be remembered long after the twentieth century recedes into history.

In this edition, Janice Connell presents a new intruduction that places Medjugorje in the context of the millennium and suggests that the Blessed Mother's final appearance on Earth may indeed be at this small mountain village. The author tells what has happened to the six apparitioners since the book was first published, and the Blessed Mother's monthly messages have been updated through 1997.There is also a new list of Marian Centers across the nation.

The Visions of the Children features exclusive conversations with the six apparitioners who have been receiving, for more than fifteen years, visions and messages of the Virgin Mary, including extraordinary secrets about the final chapter in the history of the world. This book not only tells of the need for love and spiritual awakening, but casts a powerful perspective on the wholescale devastation in Bosnia during the last few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary is the mother of every single person on this earth.
This book will truly change your life. Its message is so simple. The Mother of God is calling us back to her Son. She wants us to totally surrender to God's will for each of our lives. I read a small book on Medjugorje 13 years ago and thought to myself, Wow! that's wonderful, but that was it, I didn't think about it again until I happened to pick up "The Visions of the Children". It contains actual interviews with each of the six children who have been speaking with the Blessed Mother. What they have to say will completely involve you with what is happening in Medjugorje. This book is for every human being on the face of the earth. God does not have favorites, He loves us all equally. Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Moslems, etc. - all will go to heaven if they love Him and keep His commandments. But we can do so much more to help others. Wake up! Do not be satisfied with the life you lead now. There is more, much more. If I had the money I would buy this book for everyone. Do not pass up what The Visions of the Children has to offer. It will change your life as well as the lives of those who encounter you after you have read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full of insight.
This book has great interviews taken from the Medjugorje visionaries. The six seers, who see or saw the Mother of God daily, are interviewed in this awe inspiring book. They tell their story simply and make responding to God's desires more easy to achieve. They are full of knowledge from heaven that we simply would not know. They do. They have seen the future and what lies ahead for those who do not turn to God. They tell us what we must do now. They speak of the importance of prayer, of a Sacramental life, of a family that prays together. This book is a "must read" for anyone interested in Medjugorje and their future. Beware of some of the theology in the introductory and concluding chapters, they are the opinion of the author-not the Medjugorje visonaries. This book is a collection of interviews. Read them and understand the greatness of those who give their lives over to Mary in order to live heaven on earth.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fluff
I have read all of Janice Connel's books and have always found them rewarding - but her works on the apparations at Medjugorje
are not up to her earlier works. She seems to be enamored with
the visonaries and has chosen to downplay or circumvent many critical areas that have challenged the authenticity of the reported visions. The author lacks objectivity and it is disappointing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for me
I came to this book wanting to believe, and leaning towards belief, but with plenty of skepticism. This book reinforced my skepticism. It is not intended as a defense of the visions, per se, but friendly non-skeptical interviews with the visionairies, and report of Marian messages to the Parish at Medjugorge, and a smattering of anecdotes of seemingly miraculous events. The interviews with the visionairies were most unsatisfying. The questions were leading and shallow, nothing like the kind of questions I wish I could ask. Even worse, the answers were stereotyped, vague, and even evasive. Was this a language barrier problem? An artifact of the interviews being condensed and edited? An effort to avoid arguments? Perhaps. But I kept comparing in my mind these transcripts with scriptural accounts of conversations with Jesus. Jesus, despite all language barriers and editing, was always very direct, clear, and substantive, and never shied away from stirring up controversy. Jesus also taught us to be on guard against the many false prophets who would surely come. I remain on guard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visions of The Children
I have read Visions Of The Children many times over and over. After having been to Medjugorje twice I feel Jan Connell's book is probably the book which will make you feel as if you are already there in Medjugorje. I have read many books on Medjugorje. This one is my favorite because it is the most detailed about the six visionaries and their testimonies and encounters with Our Lady in Medjugorje. This book goes beyond all of the manifestations of Medjugorje like the rosaries turning gold, the sun spinning, etc- and focuses on the true messages of Our Lady and which she has been stating for the last almost 21 years. Do read this book and let it touch you as it has us those of us that have been blessed to visit Medjugorje ourselves and for those that havent this will take you on a journey there in your heart. A beautiful and inpisring book! ... Read more

Having recently emerged from the tumultuous teenage years herself, Amanda Ford saw the need for a guide to help girls learn to listen to their inner voices and think for themselves. Inspired by such popular books as Simple Abundance and The Woman's Book of Courage, her book offers support to young women as they navigate one of the most confusing and challenging times of their lives. As anyone familiar with teenagers knows, there is nothing they hate more than being told what to do or how to think by "out of touch" adults. Here's the real scoop from one who knows the score. In 365 one-page essays, Ford offers stories, information, and advice on all the important issues facing young women today: boys, dating, drinking, self-esteem, fights with friends, dealing with parents, and more. Girls will find comfort, encouragement, and insight in these pages, along with suggestions for articulating and confiding their feelings, fears, and frustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest wisdom, great comfort, easy format
I am a family counselor and I recomend this book for my teenage clients and their parents. It is full of comfort. Like a big sister whose just been through all the trials of being a teenager herself, Amanda is able to offer a perspective that parents and other adults can't. The formate is helpful and user friendly. The reader can look up any topic in the contents and read one page or many on subjects ranging from boys, to peer pressure, to parents. This book encourages girls to listen to their own voice instead of following the crowd. It encourages each girl to make choices that satisfy themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars become that person you've always admired
This wonderful book offers 366 (yes, it accounts for leap years) daily tips for living the best life you can. Offers sound advice for handling boys, jobs, peer pressure, self confidence, having fun, parents, jealousy, manners, dreams, and any of hundreds of issues that pop up daily for the average teen. This book inspires you to act in your own best interests and make the most out of life.

This book includes a detailed index for looking up whatever topics concern you, as well as a list of other helpful books and websites. How cool is that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Be True to Yourself : A Daily Guide for Teenage Girls
Be True to Yourself : A Daily Guide for Teenage Girls, is a treasure. It is an important and powerful book; a book that every teenage girl should read. Amanda Ford's writing style is simple, honest and very real. You know she is speaking from her heart and from her own experiences. This is a book with integrity. It is one that the reader can open to any page and find inspiration and guidance. Like Sarah Ban Breathnach's "Simple Abundance," Be True to Yourself has a daily message. The book will never become outdated and it can be read day after day. Each page is like a precious gem that shines on its own. There is no gift you can give that will help a girl more during her teenage years than Be True to Yourself. It will become her best friend and companion.

I haven't even bought this book yet but I can't wait until I do. I found it at a local bookstore because it was on a display table and the colorful cover caught my attention. Are you a "Lord of the Rings" junkie? Can’t get enough? Want more?

J.R.R. Tolkien was a believer in Christ who wove his faith into his writing. His heroes fight a war against the forces of darkness—a war in which every decision counts. Walking with Frodo leads you through 9 pairs of choices—darkness or light, betrayal or loyalty, deception or honesty, just to name a few—and reveals what the Bible has to say about each. This young adult devotional will help apply those truths to decisions you make every day, sending you on a life-changing journey of your own.Are you ready for the journey? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What is this?
Never in my life have I heard of such rubbish. The Word of God is to be the only basic source for the study of God's Word--not a trilogy of fantasy novels. Many Christians are becoming so wrapped up in pop culture that they have trouble differentiating the difference between the fictional events found within The Lord of the Rings and the true, inerrant Word of God.

We need to get out of Middle-Earth and into the real world. You cannot find strength, guidance, and spiritual power in a fictional collection of stories, regardless of whether or not they are allegories of the Christian's journey.

"Walking With Frodo"?! Is this meant to equate Frodo with Jesus Christ? Reality check: Frodo was never real, Middle-Earth was never real, and all the events which took place within Tolkien's world never happened. Christ was real, however. The battles He faced and the battles we face are very real, and we therefore should not waste our time in thinking that this garbage will assist us in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars I received the book as a gift and was delighted!
Sarah Arthur's "Walking with Frodo" blew me away. I received it as a gift and thought it was merely an attempt to cash in on the LOTL craze. I was wrong. This book is an excellent devotional or small group study guide. And you don't have to be a total LOTL fan to "get it" ... Eminently readable and biblical without being heavy handed ... I loved it. Even those who don't consider themselves Christians can enjoy the thought-provoking and well realized chapters. Those who are "Bible-shy" can understand the author's points by following her references to The Lord of the Rings. Well done! I can't wait to see what Sarah Arthur does next.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Tolkien References, Little Substance
My motivation for reading "Walking With Frodo" was primarily an interest in Tolkien's work, rather than in Christian devotion. "Walking With Frodo", however, is not a critique or analysis of Tolkien from a Christian perspective. Rather, the author Sarah Arthur uses Tolkien as a jumping-off point to discuss Christian themes. The book is primarily aimed at young people.

Given even this purpose "Walking With Frodo" does not work well. Ms. Arthur draws comparisons between Tolkien's work and Christian thought that are thin and conclusory. She begins, for example, by describing Gandalf's battle with the flaming Balrog. With no more support than that, she immediately tells the reader that of course the parallel creature in Christianity is Satan. (Tolkien was once asked if his work could be compared to Wagner's "Ring" cycle of operas. Tolkien answered that both works contained references to rings and that was the end of the comparison. The Balrog/Satan comparison strikes me as similarly light-weight.)

Ms. Arthur draws other comparisons and conclusions in a similar vein, using very little Tolkien material to support them. I find it hard to imagine that any young person with a good grounding in Christianity to begin with, is going to obtain anything more in this volume that could not be gained merely by reading the Bible itself or participating in related group activities. If the purpose is to attract young people who are LOTR fans to consider Christian values, I fear that any young person intelligent enough to read and understand Tolkien's work will see through "Walking With Frodo" as a thin attempt to tie Christian ideas to the coattails of Tolkien's current popularity.

I note also that although Ms. Arthur identifies Prof. Tolkien as a Christian, she does not mention that he was Catholic. (Likewise, C.K. Chesterton is identified as a Christian in a footnote, with no mention of his Catholicism.) While Protestants and Catholics may enjoy closer relations now, we know that this was not always so, either in this country or in Tolkien's time in Britain. We should remember that it was not too long ago that some Americans questioned whether a Catholic could lead this country as its President. In a book aimed at young people who may not be fully aware of the circumstances of Catholic/Protestant relations, (and as one who has had a Catholic education through college) I would have liked to have seen the fact of Tolkien's Catholicism mentioned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, In-Depth Study
I only read this book of my daughter's out of curiosity. Imagine my surprise and delight to find much more than a "young adult" spin on the current LOTR fanaticism - and I highly recommend this book for all ages as a true understanding of Tolkien's subtle Christian message in his epic novels. Being a LOTR fan since the early 70's, this book helped me revisit the moral underpinnings of the story as well as my own Christian beliefs. Hats off to Ms. Arthur for a job well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Christians and LOTR fans alike!
I have used this book with my children as a devotional tool in our family. This book is fun to read. My teens and Tolkien fans, have found this to be a refreshing change from our normal devotionals. The author presents her ideas, plainly, yet with power and conviction. She has a nice honest, fresh approach, and is not self-righteous in her presentation. Her understanding of Tolkien's stories and his characters ring true and are very insightful. Her ideas mesh very nicely with Bible themes and scriptures. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (Mormon) I feel this book has a very valid universal message to all Christians. It has common themes that apply to every Christian in whatever faith they find themselves. This is an excellent read for anyone.
Many of the themes discussed in the book are applicable to every person trying to find a purposeful, and good path in life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and well-done!
I am a huge fan of Josh McDowell and purchased 20 copies of this book for teens in our youth group. Many have come back to me to tell me over & over again how much they enjoyed this book. That it was the first devotional book they followed through on, and really got something out of. I only took one star off b/c sometimes the book had a tendency to be on the "cheesy" side, with the stories. But other than that, this is a GREAT devotional for junior/senior high youth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bibles are super!
Hello, diligent Bible readers! I am a young Christian girl and I come from country where there was recently a taboo on Bibles and all Biblical literature. Up to now there is very little of literature that a Bible student might use. Therefore I wondered, could anyone of the Christians of the world send me some devotional book ( no matter, if it's old or used, youth devotionals or common - anyway). I will be extremely grateful for any kind o help. Thanks! Email me if you have thought about it. My email address is brr81@hotmail.com. Truly yours Barbala

1-0 out of 5 stars i'm giving this away
i've been a christian all my life and was looking for something written by a lay christian woman to help me enrich my spirituality. this is why i bought this book. but it was a disastrous purchase. i agree with an earlier review: this book is shallow. almost everything is based on stormie's personal experience, her own interpretations of scripture, and plentiful quotes from the bible--but without context. but she obviously does not have yet a thorough and well-contemplated understanding of the bible and other christian concepts. maybe another reason i didn't like this book is because i'm catholic, and stormie isn't. so i was mentally arguing with her while reading the book. those who are new to christianity and looking towards religion for a "quick fix" in their life would probably get more from this book. the lord did answer my prayer and i found a copy of "full of grace" by johnette benkovich. that is a richer more in-depth guide for lay women looking for the path to holiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have, can read over and over!
This book, wow! I enjoy knowing her life and her past to know that she has come so far, it gives me hope, more hope in God and His Will for my life. I can read this book several times and will read it several times. It gives depth and new purpose in prayer. I got so excited I would read more than one chapter at a time.

I really enjoyed the chapter on Praying to Know the Power of Prayer. This chapter explains why we should pray and the relationship we have with our Creator when we do pray.

Another chapter I really was engrossed in (which the whole book drew me in) was Praying to Forgive Yourself, God, and Others. I think this is an area that hinders many Christians, especially me, although before this chapter I would have not known I had issues of dealing with the past issues that I had not forgiven people for.

I would highly reccomend this book! I cannot seem to express the depth it has brought to my Prayer Life and Walk with the Almighty.

God Bless!

2-0 out of 5 stars Shallow
This book in completely based on the author's own experiences and lacks depth. She gives many examples of her own life and how praying one simple prayer changed everything. For example she prayed for a husband, and poof in a few months she got one, etc. Life doesn't work that way. We can pray for soemthing for years and not get it. She presents prayer as having fast results. She "promises" if you pray her prayers for 20 days you will see drastic results. Give me a break. God works out things in our life as a process and he gives us a lifetime to do it in. This type of teaching can be very disappointing for new beleivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Change Your Life!
I'm an avid reader, but it's rare that I read a book and then go out and buy copies of it for family and friends. Yet that's just what I did with this book, because it is life changing.

The author's advice is "right on" and perfectly Biblical, and I promise that if you follow her suggestions, you can't help but have a happier life and a better relationship with God. Your marriage and other relationships will benefit, too.

I can't recommend this book enough. EVERY Christian should read it. And then read it again...and again...And if you're not a Christian, but are seeking more fulfillment out of life, this book is an excellent beginning! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Concept - Falls Short
We have been using this book for about a month with our 7 & 9 year old. While the concept is great (short story presenting a problem then kids pick from 3 multi-choices after reading a scripture), I often find it frustrating for a couple reasons.

First the 3 choices are often 2 ridiculously obvious non-choices followed by the third obvious answer. Second the scriptures used are often either irrelevant or such a stretch fit to the situation presented as to be irrelevant.

It seems to me that the author had a great idea but got caught mass producing 365 situations. Hate to be a party-pooper, and happy that the book fits for some, but 'forewarned' for others who may find it like me. Strongly suggest a pre-read prior to purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sricky Situations: 365 devotions for kids
One of the best devotions we ever purchased. It keeps the interest,is short and has real life situations. Book presents good choices to help make decisions in the real world. Just loved it. Good for 7-8 year old son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I would actually give this book a 4.45-very good & helps to bring the bible to real life by using it & applying it to realistic situations. A great way to get the family to talk about all types of issues that may come up in life

Hey teens who are sports fanatics out there! I am a 17 year old who loves sports of all kinds, and more importanly, I love my Jesus with my whole heart. I have grown so much closer to Him by reading Devotions From the World of Sports. John and Kathy are incredible writers which God has given the gift of writing to them. They make it so clear in this book how to live for God. Plus, you get to know some sports history on the side. I've had the pleasure of talking to John online, and he is an example to us all! Pick up his and his wife's book today, and I can gurrantee you will walk closer with your Savior! It is the highlight of my day. God bless you all out there. I love you all as a sister in our Lord God Almighty! ... Read more
