3-0 out of 5 stars Warning...Not for Elmo fans!!!!!
I bought this book for my 20-month old daughter because she loves Sesame Street. Elmo is her favorite. She calls this her "Elmo Book." I assumed that since Elmo is ON THE COVER, he would be in it, but my assumption was wrong! Upon closer inspection, I realized that even though I thought I was purchasing a 2004 book, it originally came out in 1980 (pre-Elmo), and apparently, they just slapped a new cover on it with Elmo and Zoe (who do not appear anywhere in the book!) I was going to return it since I was disappointed with it, but my daughter still likes to look at all of the pictures and all of the other Sesame Street characters (from when I was growing up). I felt bad because the first night I showed it to her, and she saw the cover and screamed, "ELMO!" Then I sat down with her and said, "Where's Elmo?" and we flipped through the whole book to realize her "Elmo Book" doesn't contain Elmo! Other than that major complaint, I still like the book and its illustrations even though I think the cover photograph was a very poor choice, and by writing this review, I hope to save other parents from disappointing other true Elmo lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
My 2.5 years old son falls in love with this book. He reads it every night. Every night, he will take out this book from the shelf and asks me to tell what the sesame street muppet did in the pages. Once I stop, he will say : "Turn the page, Mum, No stop. Please read me this book!" If you don't ask him to stop reading, he will continue to read this book till late night. This book is really a unusal dictionary that the family with little child should have one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry it's out of print!
This book is not just for toddlers. It is the only dictionary I have seen that puts standard sight words into meaning. Particulary children with learning disabilities have a very difficult time understand the concept of sight words. With a very playful, visual and active descriptive of the sight words, it brings life to the meaning of the words, and it eases in the retention of these words when reading. This book is excellent for children with reading disabilities - up until the 3rd or 4th grade.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book to grow up with
This book is wonderful for children from ages 2 and up. My 2 year old is not yet ready to learn definitions, but the book is filled with colorful, easy to see pictures, in which he can identify his beloved Sesame Street characters, as well as the activities that they portray. This is one of the few books that he doesn't want to put down. So many pages makes it something new each and every time we pick it up. I cannot tell you the extent of the knowledge he has gained from this book. Several of his daycare teachers have told me how amazing he is in what he knows and comprehends for a child his age. His knowledge and perception of things took off immediately following our Sesame Street Dictionary reading sessions. This is a book that will continue to give as he grows older and begins learning the concepts and definitions of these words, not to mention when he begins reading and writing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book to nurture a reading hobby for a child
I've been reading this book to my 2 1/2 yrs old daughter as her bedtime story since she was 18th months old. Now, she requested me to read this book for her everynight without failed. I find that this is a very good book to make her interested in reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource
As a teacher of English as a Second Language, I have used many different picture dictionaries. The Oxford Picture Dictionary for Kids is very well organized and uses a group of characters that provide continuity throughout the dictionary. These characters provide a continual story line so that I use the dictionary not only for "finding words," but also as a base for teaching content-area information. The pictures are clear and well-defined and cover a large vocabulary spectrum. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!! And offered at an unbelievable price too!
I wanted to get a more advanced dictionary for my 3rd grade son since the current Children's Dictionary he has often did not contain words we looked up. At first my Children's Dictionary search did not bring me to this book. But I read a review which recommended this dictionary. It was by a 5th Grade Teacher (Shannon Bradford), who also has her review here. I did my own comparisons of about 4 different dictionaries I found in my search. Using just the online reviews and descriptions, I decided to go with this one. When I received it, I was SO PLEASED! The book is so interesting. The beautiful color pictures and overall layout makes it interesting and fun to lookup words. Just flipping through it makes you want to stop and look at the pictures. I would have paid twice what I did for it. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best Children's Dictionary for 8 - 12 year olds
I'm a 5th grade teacher. I've used and compared many different dicitonaries. The Thorndike-Barnhart Junior Dictionary is the best by far that I've ever seen.

Recently I decided to buy dictionaries for my class. I looked at over 20 different student dictionaries. Some of the dictionaries I looked at were Merriam-Webster Children's Dictionary, MacMillan Dictionary for Students, American Heritage Student Dictionary, and Scholastic Children's Dictionary. None of these held a candle to the Thorndike-Barnhart Junior Dictionary. I took a list of over 200 words that my students couldn't find in our current dictionaries and I looked them up in each of the dictionaries I compared. There were two things I was looking for. First, I wanted to know which dictionary had most of these words. Second I wanted to know which dictionary struck the best balance defining the words in such a way that my students could understand them without loosing meaning or using langage that was too difficult for my students to understand. The Thorndike-Barnhart Junior Dictionary was the best in both categories by far.

There is also a Thorndike-Barnhart Intermediate Dictionary. It has the same words and definitions as this dictionary but also includes a bunch of extras (maps, lists, and such) but costs almost twice as much. If yo've got the money to spend, it might be worth it, but the price seemed high to me for what additional information it offered.

4-0 out of 5 stars My children love it, but complain it is not up to date.
This junior dictionary is ideal for 8 to 12 years old kids, ithas everything they need at that age. The dictionary is built in sucha colorfull way that is easy for them to find the words and their different meanings with examples, homographs, homophones, idioms and inflected forms. Pronunciation keys are presented at the botton of every right hand page. A new edition is required to update the new countries and world map. The price is a real bargain. ... Read more

They start with word and picture association, each word serving as a picture label and presented in both languages. Words are grouped by themes, such as clothes kids wear, toys they play with, animals, foods, and many others. Questions throughout the book encourage kids to look closely and talk about what they see—in two languages! 5-0 out of 5 stars a great 1st book
I wanted to introduce another language to my two year old and this book was the perfect means to do so. In the back, it has a helpful guide to the proper pronounciation of the words (if it's been awhile since you, yourself, have spoken the language). Also, the books layout groups things children know together--foods, clothing, etc., and the pictures are bright and colourful. All of which, make it an easy book to teach and enjoy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Spiral binding is NOT a good idea for little fingers...
I'm giving this book 1 star with great sadness because my 13-month-old loves it. However, the spiral binding is a terrible idea. We have some of the other Priddy Bicknell books, and they've held up just fine. For 13 months, she's actually very careful. But even adults have some problems with spiral bindings (think of those photo albums with pages starting to tear out), so it was no great surprise when some of the pages ripped. And because of the binding, you can't tape them back in. If you want to read this with your child, fine, but what kid doesn't want to turn the pages herself?? Either plan to replace this---FREQUENTLY---or buy some of the other Priddy books instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Picture Book I have Found to date
While "My Big World Book" is also terrific, this is even better, no questions asked. More relevant to daily life and words children NEED to know at the preschool age, this book helps children from all walks of life learn new words daily.
The picture quality is also excellent.

I would recommend this book most of all for all parents wanting to spend time with their child, teaching them to label and learn new nouns. It's fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I got this book for my one year old twins, and they simply love this book. I also have Roger Priddy's "My Big Animal Book" which they also love. My Big Word Book is not a board book, but I still show this book to my girls. I like how this book contains a large variety of things we see everyday, and I use it to complement the animal book. My girls love looking at bright and colorful photographs, and I think this book is a great teaching tool for parents. I highly recommend this book for parents with young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best word book I have seen!
I have gotten numerous first word books for my two toddlers, and this one by far is the best. The pictures are fabulous, the words are words that are genuinely applicable, not wierd things that kids never use. The book also has a section with colors, the alphabet, shapes, and numbers. It is well organized and the pages aren't crammed so full of pictures and words that the kids can't focus on anything. There are several pictures/words on each page, but not too many. The pages are thicker than normal pages so they don't rip as easily, and it is spiral bound, so they turn easier. My little boy and little girl both LOVE this book, and I like it a lot better than other first word books that I have gotten for them. It's a high quality book, definitely worth getting! ... Opening with inspiring quotes from Frank Zappa and Nietzsche, Kathleen Krull takes readers on a tuneful journey through a rich variety of music. Illustrator Stacy Innerst's watery portraits of musicians and a vast diversity of instruments (from the accordion to the zither) reflect the movement and spark inherent to great music. Despite the appealing, folk-arty illustrations, however, it is overall a puzzling book, whose target audience is entirely unclear. Ostensibly an alphabet primer, the inclusion of (B is for) Beatles, (E is for) Elvis, and (H is for) Hildegard (a German nun and "the first woman composer we know by name") seems to muddy this alphabet soup with unnecessary complexities. The glossary (which someone just learning their ABCs may have some trouble reading) defines some, but by no means all, of the scattered words floating on the page near each letter. Prokofiev, ukeke, Stomu Yamashita, zapateado and others remain unexplained, forcing many parents into an awkward position when the question, "Mommy, what does that mean?" arises, which it surely will. This first dictionary has an attractive and easy-to-read format, loaded with full color photographs and drawings. Each word is in large bold type, followed by its definition and sometimes an example of its usage. Illustrations help early readers locate the word they are looking for. The book also includes some large full page charts, such as the human body with outer parts labeled (limbs and facial features- not internal organs) and a page of dinosaurs.
