3-0 out of 5 stars Nice dictionary, but meatier than you think
This is a serious dictionary, not a kids dictionary as you would be led to believe. Most pages have a Garfield cartoon with a highlighted word defined on that page. Sometimes I question the choice of words, because there would be a better word in the strip, but that's a minor complaint. I will warn you that this is a real adult sized dictionary with all the words you would expect in that type of book. So if you are buying it for your elementary school Garfield fan, you should be forewarned. Of course if they don't outgrow the Garfield fascination they can use it a long time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Children of all ages
This book has humor for all ages of people. It adds a humorous aspect to looking up words. I guarentee that if you like Garfield that you will love this book! There is a garfield comic on every page which uses one of the words on the page. It is used in a humorous context. You will never look at a dictionary the same again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for spelling bee-ers
I got this book for my little girl when we were preparing for her 4th grade spelling bee. She and I both *love* it. She didn't win the bee this time, but we're going to work all year with the book... it makes learning new words fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver!
I used to be a genius speller. I went to the National Spelling Bee as a child! I've been a professional proofreader at times in the past ten years! But chemotherapy caused a mental fog to set in, and I've lost my spelling ability. This book has saved my life and my self-esteem. Thank you for selling it.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Literati players where spelling counts, not definitions
When I received this book I thought I might find it useful because I am a lousy speller (I read by looking at words as complete units rather than by letters). But then I thought, "Hey, this is what spellcheckers are for!" True, this does not stop me from making errors in reviews because I have spelt the wrong word correctly, but what does that to do with using this book? Then I was playing Literati (an on-line variation of Scrabble) and it dawned on me: I do not have to fumble through the dictionary trying to find out what words begin with FLA- while the clock is counting down my time, I can use my new Spelling Dictionary! No, it does not have every acceptable word that can pop up in the game, but I pretty much know all the two letter words in the world right now any way. But it does have plurals and parts of verbs spelled out in full, along with alternative spellings, which is pretty much exactly what I need. So, I have to admit, I have found a great utility for this little book that has nothing to do with word processing and spell checking. Before the computer became so commonplace in our homes and offices, this book would have been of great use to people like me, who keep making spelling mistooks that need to be corrupted and do not need the definition of the word, just the spelling. This book even makes it easier for you when you are in that age-old Catch-22 of having to look up the spelling of a word you do not need to spell. With three columns per page there are only seven pages to deal with the hunreds of words beginning with the letter "N." With this book you can find it, find it fast, and it is small enough that it can sit between your keyboard and your monitor or someplace equally convenient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Idea!
Looking up words in this dictionary is much quicker than in a regular dictionary. Mostly, you will just see the word...without any definition.

It is a great idea because sometimes I write a word and look at it and think it is the strangest looking word I have ever seen. Sometimes the word is correct and my mind is just playing tricks on me, and sometimes I really need this book!

A few times there are some mini-definitions.

Poor (lacking wealth)
Pore (of skin; to look or think intently)
Pour (liquid)

Just to prevent any confusion. There are also a few alternative spellings for words and they are listed together for you to decide which one to use. Is it mediaeval or medieval?

The section on "commonly confused words" was educational and I have had my share of trouble with: desert and dessert when writing a cookbook. Just when I think I will never make THAT mistake again...there I go again.

To make this book even easier to read, they have indented words like: Exclaimed and Exclaiming under the word Exclaim.

A definite must have for all writers....

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Resource
This book is an awesome tool for those who misspell words frequently. You don't need to bother with an incredibly bulky dictionary with definitions when you know the definition of the word that you are looking for. Look it up in a spelling dictionary. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars to echo another reviewer: BE CAREFUL HERE!
first know what you're buying. i bought this book assuming it would be a vocubulary-builder, but instead it's more dictionary-like. and worse than those of a dictionary, its entries are little more than a few words long (and by a few words i mean one or two words). it never gives you the part of speech of any of the words, and it fails to note whether a word might have multiple meanings or whether its defintion is nuanced. some of the definitions are downright ambiguous! you're never given any usage examples, so if you come across an unfamiliar word you're likely to use it clumsily or self-consciously. some important words are also missing from this book (e.g., "epigone"). and you'll not find any guide to pronouncing any of the words, either. (how can kolby expect to do justice to 4000 or so words in but 160 pages?!)
all this said, i think this book can still serve some uses: first, it might make you aware of some words with which you were hitherto unfamiliar; second, it can can be handy as a quick-reference (as when you're reading and come across a strange word) although i'd recommend looking up the word in a good dictionary later on. this is about as useful as VOCABULARY 4000 gets.
if you're looking for a good vocabulary-builder, check out VERBAL ADVANTAGE, or princeton review's WORD SMART (the usage examples are funny), or 1000 MOST IMPORTANT WORDS (the entries in that one are beautifully-written; it's somewhat more literary than the other two, though it's just as helpful). but don't study VOCAB 4000 exclusively (in fact, don't STUDY it all; merely refer to it from time to time. STUDY the other previously-mentioned books or a good dictionary).

3-0 out of 5 stars Be carful IT IS A DICTIONARY
IT IS A DICTIONARY !!!! NOT A VOCABULARY BOOK
IT ONLY HELP ME TO GET A SPECIFIC WORD MEAN

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than average vocabulary builder
Vocabulary 4000 is helpful for learning new vocabulary words, not just for standardized tests but for everyday use as well. Most of the words inside are not so esoteric (that is, known to only a few) that you will feel self-conscious using them in conversations with your friends... that is, unless you hang out with high school dropouts. Naturally, though, even uneducated folk might enjoy picking up a modicum of new words from talking to you.

In addition to the (almost) plethora of choice words to be found inside this book, there are a number of exercises included to ensure you actually retain something. These were nice, as was an informative section at the end of the book that dealt with common mistakes in everyday language. There was quite a bit to be found in this book, considering its unthreatening thickness.

I do have a pretty big problem with Vocabulary 4000, though. While it's great for finding impressive words fast (not to mention finding SAT-caliber words fast)--rather than scrounging through a dictionary to look for them--the definitions are absurdly short, usually on the order of one or two words. So many times you're left with only one meaning of the word, completely devoid of any knowledge of its various connotations or its usual context. A quick example: I think "vacuous" was defined as "inane". Granted, that is a common use of the word, but it could also simply mean empty. Also, if you didn't know what inane meant, you could look it up, but it said "stupid" so you might think it was used to refer to stupid people. Not so--inane normally refers to a comment. Things like that keep this book from being a must have, but it is still a good book for vocabulary building.

Basically, I recommend this book if you have a decent dictionary to supplement it. That way you can find some great words fast (using Vocabulary 4000) and understand them completely (using the dictionary). This is what I have done, and it works great.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a perfect book if time is taken into it.
Although, there is not much of chapters (only 4) these 4000 vocabulary words definitions are abbriviated so learning them is easier. I have had this book for 2 weeks almost and at my age(15) I infer, my vocabulary is sharper than ever. The caption says what the books is. I belive the best way to learn and shrpen vocabulary is simply by learning set by set of words. This is a good commodity for the astute reader. audeu.

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful
I am an English major and had never seen the majority of the words listed in here! Since I am always looking to learn interesting new words this was a real find. It is an excellent tool while preparing for the verbal section of the GRE and learning more colorful terms in general. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good...
I thought this Irish Dictionary wasn't bad. As a total beginner in Irish, this has taught me quite a few words. The illustrations are beautifully done, and best of all, each word gives a rough english spelling of its pronunciation, instead of an annoying pronunciation guide at the back you have to keep reffering to (and that often doesn't apply to every single word).

However, I don't think I got enough for [...]. The entries all have large illustartions that take up a large portion of the page, and hence there aren't very many entries. [...].

Also, I thought perhaps it should have been better organized. Maybe they should have put the colors and numbers together in a list in one section of the book, instead of alphabetically in with the other entries. Trying to learn to count to ten is rather tedious when you have to flip through the whole book to find each number.

But for younger children, this is an excellent book, as the illustrations provide a great visual to accompany the entries. The pronunciation guide, as I've mentioned, is a life-saver, as well. So in conclusion, I would recommend this book, if you aren't interested in the layout of the book and the fact that it doesn't have too many entries [....] The only thing I will strongly emphasize here is *only* buy this book *if* you are an *absolute* beginner at the Irish language!!

4-0 out of 5 stars " Nice for kids or adults"
This is a very simple straight forward little dictionary.Onething that is essential is that it has two wonderful pronunciationpages before you begin the dictionary. The pronunciation pages explain how to pronunce vowels, consonants and also explains about broad and slender.

The layout of this dictionary is simple. It is in alphabetical order, and contains pretty simple everyday use words; everything from laughter, to green, to bat. What I really like is that it gives the english word, the irish spelling and the irish pronunciation, as well as a small illustration next to each.

I believe gaelic (irish) would be a very hard language for a child to learn, however this dictionary would be most helpful. I bought it for myself and I'm an adult. I think even though I really don't need pictures, they help by giving your memory a visual as well as an oral memory for association. Kind of like those little quiz cards when you're a kid. ...
