5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Breathtaking
This book is one of the most incredible books ever written. I thoroughly recommend it to everyone. Of all the books which deserve cult status, this book is the most breathtaking.

The artwork is amazing! The paintings simply take your breath away. Whenever I want to escape, I read this book. Whenever I want to immerse myself again in the land of Dinotopia, I just look at one of the fabulous paintings and i'm there.

The book is accessible to everyone - there are characters which connect with every person on this earth. The story is magical and deserves greater praise than I could ever give it.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! PLEASE BUY IT!!!!!

PLEASE!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT ILLUSTRATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!A SOON TO-BE CLASSIC!!!!!!!
A phenomenal book about dinosaurs living in peace and harmony on an island with generations of shipwrecked travelers. Not only does this book have a extrordinary plot, the illustrations couldn't be better! If you enjoy fantasy as much as much as just atensy-weensy bit, you'll fall in LOVE with this book. You'll read it to EVERYBODY! I've never heard of a book as extrordanary as this. A must read for all. Some other great books based on this are The World Beneath;Dinotopia Lost;and the series of short novels. READ THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best of the books
Dinotopia is the first of the Dinotopia series. Although it has a loose plot, it's mostly a mock-National Geographic style travelogue account of an island populated by both humans and dinosaurs. Buy the book for the beautifully detailed illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Memories
I first read this book when I was maybe eight years old; I read it over the course of a few days I was off from school, due to being sick. It was probably one of the best reads of my life (rivalling the first time I read Lord of the Rings). The illustrations were absolutely beautiful, and the story was truly engrossing. The way it was written was interesting as well; written in the form of a journal, but in a very human manner, as though it *was* a journal, rather than just a *story* written as a journal (does that make any sense).
Anyway, quite a few months ago I was home from school again, and out of boredom I picked it up off of my bookshelf. The illustrations are still absolutely beautiful, and the story is still truly engrossing. I read through it in maybe an hour, and was completely blown away. None of the magic which I had felt when I was but a young child had gone away; it was just as wonderful as ever.
If you have a child who is into dinosaurs, or anything fanciful, buy this for them to read or to read with them. It will stick with them (and you) forever...

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK
Anyone with an imagination, a love of art, or an interest in dinosaurs will love this book. The illustrations are the best I've ever seen in a book and the story is great. It reminds me of something H.G.Wells would write. I will take good care of this book and pass it down from generation to generation like a family treasure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unequalled achievement
This audio version is a masterpiece and is destined to become a classic of audio drama along with Welles' "War of the Worlds" and the plays of Norman Corwin. ZBS has outdone itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary tales of whimsy for youthful readers.
I first read this book at a young age when I was still fascinated with the world of dinosaurs. Gotten over the addiction by now, being almost out of highschool, I still look back on my memories with this book, and its sister book: "The World Beneath", with great fondness. The illustrations, no less that artistry, are high above the par of your average children's picture book. And, they are only outdone by the spellbinding story; brought to life with the loving detail that could only be conjured by a true dinosaur fan. This book would be a welcome addition to any child's wish list and makes for a lasting impression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, interesting read
Although this book is considered a children's book, or something for young teens, I believe it's enjoyable for people of all ages. The artwork is gorgeous and the detail Gurney puts into creating his world is amazing. The book is written in the form of a journal, written mostly by Arthur Denison, but with a few entries written by his son, Will. Because Arthur is a scientist, Gurney can believably put in a great deal of detailed information about the world of Dinotopia. I loved reading this book and I especially loved looking at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read for the Entire Family!
Years ago my husband received this book as a birthday gift and loved it. The collection grew to include the three true Gurney texts (Dinotopia, The Land Beneath, First Flight).

Over the past year we started reading them with our five-year-old daughter who has fallen in love with the beautiful illustrations, the mythical world and engaging characters. After reading them numerous times, they have been favorite bedtime reading, we purchased the two novels by Alan Dean Forrester. They continue the same Denison era plot lines with the same familiar characters and a few new ones. At first some of the vocabulary was hard for her to understand but I have to say that we made it through both books and we all enjoyed them. I have to disagree with those who felt the vocabulary in the Forrester texts was too difficult. I do have to admit that I had to consult webster's twice...but that's how we learn and I'm happy to give this example to my five-year-old emergent reader. Fun books, well written which send you imagination wondering....great for all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most impossible dream comes true for a dinosaur fan!
This is the most beautiful and realistic book ever to be painted of a fabulous land where dinosaurs and people who are NOT cavepeople truly love each other and peacefully live together. In fact, this is quite different from Jurassic Park - here, dinosaurs treat you with a great respect and even speak to you in your own language! The details of everyday life in the lovely Dinotopia are quite eye-filling and breathtaking, ranging from a wooden puppet serving as a foster mother to new hatchlings to the simply stunning ariel views of those glorious castles proudly standing upon very craggy mountains as you fly by on a pterosaurus-shaped hang-guider! A hardcore dinosaur lover would just swoon at those wonderful sights no matter how old he or she is! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dolphin Watch
The book I chose to review is Dinotopia Dolphin Watch by John Vornholt. It is about a boy named Joshua Longacre and how he won't accept Dinotopia as his home. He only socializes with dolphins and Milos, a seaside boy. He steals a sky galley to try to get away. He also tries to persuade Milos to tell him the way off Dinotopia. I would recommend this book to a friend because it is adventurous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diving with dinos
Another fine Dinotopia story. This time we are treated to an undersea adventure complete with intelligent plesiosaurs. Gurney's world of people living with dinosaurs gets better with each telling.

My son loves these books, although he is starting to read at a higher level and has expanded to include the books of the Dinosaur Wars series. These are adventures with a harder edge than Dinotopia, but still suitable for teens. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good overall book
This book overall was a good book for any favorite Fanticy lover.
this book is about a young man who is a mail diliver in the land of Dionotopia. He dilivers mail on the back of a skybax. A sky bax is a dinasaur. it can fly long distancsis.
The young man goes on a joueney to find his feonca. Along ther way he meets up with carnavorious dinasaurs, grumpy hermits, and some nomadic tribes of humans and dinosaurs.
I recomend this book to those who can read well. their is some chalanging gramer and some going frome one person to another.
For the most part the book really held my attention. i didn't want to put teh book down. i kept telling telling my self just one more chapter, but i ended up reading 3 more chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
You would love to read this book if you are a science fiction kind of person. It couldn't really happen but it is cool to think it could. If you have read any of the other Dinotopia books, you will love this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was an AMAZING book!
I loved this book! the writing was descriptive and this book was written in great detail. I can't wait to read the others!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alan Dean Foster adds marvelously to the world of Dinotopia
It was a great book and I have only one complaint: I really, really wish it had a map at the beginning showing all of Dinotopia and including all the place names mentioned in the story. I loved the story itself though and Alan Dean Foster's unique ability to describe fictional settings and people is what makes this book great. An awesome addition to the world of Dinotopia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good story line
"The Hand Of Dinotopia" has a good story line, but I did not care too much for the writing style; it was a bit too dry. The story is about two young humans, and a dinosaur, who go questing for something called the Hand of Dinotopia that supposedly points the way to a safe sea route in and out of Dinotopia, which is surrounded by deadly currents and reefs that can smash boats to pieces. The trio soon find something amazing in the middle of 'The Great Desert,' which is unexplored and unknown to all but a very few dinotopians. Before too long the group becomes larger as the humans and dinosaurs continue their quest in search of the Hand of Dinotopia, but the question is: do they find what they're looking for . . .? An entertaining book, good story line, and rather suspenseful, providing a mystery to curious and willing readers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Windchaser
I think that I would give this book five stars because it had a lot of action in it and the coolest Dinosaurs that they talked about was a Skybax because they say that Skybaxs can' t talk well they were wrong because one Skybax can talk. His first partner Daniel had teached him how to talk but unfortunetly a fire started where they were and Daniel got caught in the fires and Windchaser tryed to save him but he was to late and he got wings burned from the fires and so Windchaser never ever had a partner again but Raymond had become his partner because they both had something in common they had both lost somebody.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I read this book at school and love it. It explains Dinotopia so you don't have to have read "Dinotopia a Land Apart From Time" to understand the story. If you want to read the children's series I recomend that you read this book first. I particualy like how it is about Skybaxes ( a tipe of flying dinosaur that can be rode on by humans). I have read two other books in the series and this is by far the best one. This is a must have for both people who have read other Dinotopia books or have never read a Dinotopia book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
I'm not even into dinos, but I loved this book. It has a great plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat with the book glued in your hands. Raymond and Hugh land on Dinotopia, meet some neat characters, and then proceed to learn many valuable lessons. Hugh needs to learn to fit in, and Raymond wants desperately to help an injured dino named Windchaser. How will they accomplish these feats? Read the first Dinotopia book to find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the Dinotopia line!
Like all good spinoffs, this book adds yet another layer to the Dinotopia story. I found "Windchaser" somewhat more mature in tone than several of the other series books, in that it touches on the serious subjects of death and bereavement, unfortunately found in Dinotopia as elsewhere. This added dimension made for a much richer and emotionally involving story than those books with simpler "teen has a problem and eventually solves it" plots. Of all the Dinotopia series writers I've read to date, Scott Ciencin exhibits the best combination of character and story development with uniquely creative situations. Any Dinotopia fan will of course enjoy this book, and I'd also recommend it as a 'plain good read' to anyone not yet familiar with this fascinating series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good But Not Perfect!
I thought this book was ok. It is the first Dinotopia book Ive read.I'm not done reading it yet but so far it lacks characterzation and it sometimes jumps into situations quickly but not always. On the other hand it does have great description and I thought the first scene is full of action. So if your looking for a good book thats got alot of action and description and a good story line, and you don't care about characterzation Then you should get this book. ... Read more

Compared to other books in the series, this one doesn't stand up. When finished, you're left wanting more. This time around, dinosaur involvement is almost none. In my opinion, the transition that one of the characters has from being jovial too, well, not when put in the crisis of being lost in the desert should not have happend; it would've made the time of them being lost more interesting. Very, very little action in this one folks. It's a good read if you have the time, but prepare to be disapointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars James Gurney is the best writer I have read about.
When I first read Dinotopia, I just enjoyed the pictures. But now, I wish that I was in Dinotopia. I wish I was a skybax rider, soaring high above the clouds. James Gurney makes his world seem real, so real that you can almost reach out and touch it. Because of his beautiful paintings, you are "reborn" into a wondreful fantasy world. I am only 12, but my love of Dinotopia has sprouted, just like shipwreaked humans on the island. I have read both books, plus I have read all the paperback books. Instead of the views of Will and Arthur Denison, the paperback books give you a different perspectave of life on Dinotopia. Like in "River Quest", the book gives a perspectave of a young 13 year old girl, who becomes the rainwater habitat partners and how Mangolia and Paddlefoot recover the Polongo River. If anyone likes the detailed, wonderful world of Dinotopia, I recommend reading the Dinotopian series as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pale shadow of its predecessor.
As the sequel to the original Dinotopia, this book is something of a disappointment. The art is still as incredible and magical as ever. The perspective, however, has been dropped from first person to third-a very poor transition. The happy, warm suspicion that lingers in the back of your mind, telling you to believe in this peaceful island, is lost completely and leaves the story cold and even a little sappy. The art alone-for this IS an art book-keeps my rating up at 4 stars, and the fanciful tale and explanation of how the fateful journal came to leave the island is enjoyable enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oops I think he did it again.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Gurney's second Dinotopia book is just as good as the first. The illustrations are wonderful. After reading this, I now know more about the characters in the movie Dinotopia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Sequel
The first book was one of a kind...until the second came along and finished the story. Dinotopia: The World Beneath is a must have for anyone who has read the first book. There are new adventures, amazing new discoveries, plenty of exciting action and a satisfying conclusion to everything. The illustrations are just as spectacular as they were the first time and the story does not dilute itself one bit. I urge you to find yourself a copy of this book, and also a copy of the original if you have not read that either; both are amazing books meant for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars No loss of glory
Dinotopia is an island where dinosaurs and people live in peace, except for the carnivores that live in the Rainy Basin. This book is the sequel to Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time and it was just as good as the last Dinotopia. The sequel brought more depth to the plot without losing any of the original’s glory. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book
I really enjoyed this book. It was easy to read. And it talked about the other animals that live on the island. I hope to read more of them like this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Sabertooth Mountain is an easy-to-read book. It, along with the rest of the DINOTOPIA series, can be read in one day. The whole thing is filled wtih action, adventure and exciting events. The best part is where the kid falls out of the sky galley and the sabertooths save him. I would recommend it to you!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is one great book. I loved it!
I have all of the DINOTOPIA paperback books (now that my mom ordered "THUNDER FALLS") an I think this book is one of the best. I like high places too (I live in Austria) and I like dinosaurs. This book combines both in a very interesting way.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!!!!
I loved this book. It had it all, excitement and danger. The Sabertooths were the best as far as I'm concerned but I might be biased since I love big cats. The Habitat Partners in this book really had their hands full!!! ... Read more

Also, Pantera is the coolest band ever...To all kids. go buy the CD called "Reinventing the steel" plus, I am 14, not 12....I had to put 12 cause that is the oldest age on the form

5-0 out of 5 stars danger.com review
I think the book is very exciting and dramatic. It's very dramatic sometimes, then it could be really funny. It is mind boggling and it makes you think and it doesn't give you any clues or hints. It will make you think it is a certain person, then you'll find out it isn't that person. It is a great book to read.I have bought the whole series because of the way the author details everything. So, I hope you like it as I have in the 3 books I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars an awsome book
this book is the best everyone should get this awsome book and the DINOTOPIA series as well and most ppl don't think 13 year olds like books like this ... Read more
