Book Description

Valerie's life is pretty good. While she's not the most popular girl in school, she does have decent grades, great friends, and a potential boyfriend. All a girl could want.

Then her mother announces that (1) she's gay, and (2) she's leaving Valerie's dad for her girlfriend. Not what Valerie envisioned for her future. And just when Valerie is getting over this bombshell, her father tells her he's gotten a new job as protocol chief for the royal family of some obscure European country.

Valerie's world has come unglued. She can either stay in Virginia with her mom and her über-organized, veggie-burger-eating girlfriend, or go with her dad, leaving everything she knows for some place she's never heard of. Valerie opts to go, and quickly discovers that it was a mistake -- until she meets the prince, and all bets are off! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I started reading this book I thought it was a little slow. But after I'd read more, I really started to get into it. It fuses comedy, drama and romance all in one. The story begins with Valerie learning that her mother is gay and wants to move in with her girlfriend, Gabrielle. Soon after, her father tells her that she has two choices. 1. she can move to a small German speaking country called Schwerinborg (which, no seems to know how to pronounce, calling it Smorgasbord instead). Or 2. she can move in with her mom and her vegan girlfriend, Gabrielle. After much thought of how her friends and every one she knows would find out about her mom, she chooses to live with her dad. There, she learns the German word for exit is "ausfahrt", that the McChicken sandwiches here have a strange onion sauce on them, and that at the end of every fairy tale, not every prince falls for the princess.

4-0 out of 5 stars Typical Story But Awesome Still
Valerie has everything a girl in high school could want. She may not be Miss Popularity, but she's not looking to be either, which is relieving because going after the Popularity Crown is getting a little old. Valerie does go after another crown though-- the one that sits on top of a royally cute Prince.

She moves to a country in Europe with her father because she refuses to live with her lesbian mother and life partner. The life partner is what bugs Val the most, but nonetheless, Val loves her mother deeply. Suddenly, Val is in a whole new world and is being swept away by Prince Charming (literally!).

This is a very cute read, and while the story is familiar, it's not SO familiar that you won't like this book. It's very funny, cute, and charming. Check this one out girls (or boys, if that's your pleasure!)... YOU'LL LOVE IT!!

4-0 out of 5 stars May be under other name
Just a warning: my library had this book under Nicole Burnham, so if you are checking your librarys card catalog and you cant find "nikki burnham" search for nicole.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty entertaining.
this book was pretty entertaining. at first i was reluctant to even cotinue with the book b/c i just was not interested enough by the cover lol. yes i kno i'm shallow, u're not suppose to jude the book by its cover but i did. it looked to me something a 12 year old would read. and i just not interested in that type of book. but i read it anywayz out of sheer boredom and i was hooked on it! i admit some of the parts were somewhat juvenile but i stilled enjoyed. i will read the sequel Spin Control: The Sequel to the Hit Royally Jacked Is Here!
By Niki Burnham when it comes out in jan. 2005 i believe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Royally Funny

5-0 out of 5 stars The Avenger has seen it all...
Thrilling, chilling and verbose; three words to describe the emotional path Cormier takes you through each time you turn the page. "We All Fall Down" is one of Cormier's most impressive works and clearly demonstrates a perfect thriller in my eyes.

Robert Cormier's descriptive paragraphs and wording not only absorb the reader, but compel them to unravel the book even further. It is the story of the Avenger, Buddy and Jane, and follows the effects a random act of violence has on the three.

"We All Fall Down" is a rather disturbing novel, but at the same time, enjoyable. This book illustrates fate and how a slight twist of it can alter lives forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cormier does it again
Much like the Chocolate War, We All Fall Down deals with everyday problems teens' face in school, home, and in their personal lives. I loved how Cormier made this book accessible to teens but to adults as well. Abuse of alcohol, lies, the thought of death, and the deconstructing of family are issues that this book deals with. Cormier lets the reader see how Jane and other characters deal with these issues by writing from more than one point of view. For example, the reader can see how Jane copes with the fact her sister Karen is in a coma and might not wake up. Not only does this allow teenagers to relate to these feelings and emotions; it also connects to adults as well. They were once teenagers and have gone through the same situations as Jane, Karen, and Buddy. By reading this, adults can get a sense of what life is like for teens today and understand the reasons why teens do the things they do. It is the issues the book discusses and how the characters cope with their problems that makes this book so important to society today.

5-0 out of 5 stars We All Fall Down
I was in actual pain after reading this story. It felt like a glass bell was hung from my throat and rang in my heart with every new twist in the climax of the story. He shows once again his amazing ability to name his stories. Like many of Cormier's novels one of the charecters makes you feel simpathy for them despite their strong flaws, but is leaves you feeling at least a little satisfied instead of disturbed. The twists in the story will be enough to keep you interested long enough to teer through the 100 pages.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time
I read this book for school last year, and i was pretty excited to start it because it sounded like it would be good. By the time i got past the first chapter, however, I could tell that I was going to be disappointed. The author introduces a lot of issues into the book that he never really follows up on. For a book that is only a little over 100 pages, he shouldn't have included so many tangents that never seem to have any closure, and leaves you wondering what ever happened. The build-up to the climax, to find out who the "avenger" is, is the only good part about the book. I got a shock when i found out who it was, but the climax ended way too simply and way too early to keep me from being disappointed. It took me much longer to finish this book than it should have because I never wanted to read it. If i hadn't been forced to finish it, i probably wouldn't have. It's not worth the time it takes to read it.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is the worst book I have ever read.
This is by far the worst piece of 'literature' I have ever been unfortunate enough to read. This book is supposed to deal with 'real life' issues of young adults when in all actuality is nothing more than a shameless attempt at hack writing. Remember how R.L. Stine wrote crappy horror stories for children to make money... this is worse. Not only does it have nothing to do with adolescent issues, it in some ways promotes rape, drinking, and violence. This is by far the most horrible story I have ever read. This story is also not even written very well. Worst Book Ever. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great bedtime book for young children of divorce.
Tom and his bear's story has helped my 3 year old child better understand and cope with her father's visititation schedule. When a Daddy lives out-of-state, it can be difficult for a young child to say good-bye, because they may not be together again for several weeks. This book helped my child to talk about her feelings. She was able to identify with Tom.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any young child having difficulty with divorce.
The story of Tom quickly became my 4 year old son's favorite bed-time story. Especially following visitation days. It thoughtfully explains the problems that most kids have during and after a divorce, without placing blame on anyone. It also does not give any false hopes about the parents getting back together. The illustrations are beautiful. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Story is good, but still has many problems.
I must admit that I enjoyed this book, but I was only able to do so because I suspended my belief in reality and accepted King's premise. The little girl is lost early in the book, and from there I read each page wanting to find out if and when and how she would be rescued. The rescue at the end would be the big payoff. The girl Trisha spent several weeks in the woods, getting bitten to death by bugs, slowly going crazy, starving and sick, but somehow she keeps moving. Her favorite baseball player is Tom Gordon, and she listens to his games on her Walkman and talks to him to try and keep her sanity. All of this works well, and the end is a satisfying payoff to the girl lost in the woods story.

But was this good for a Stephen King effort? Sure it was, but it wasn't worthy of a novel. Even at large print and 220 pages, this short novel seemed to drag in places and to also be repititive. This would have been better a short story part of a larger collection. I think King could have done better than producing this afterthought of a novel. Other recent novels are probably 4 times longer than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of King's best yet!
I love Stephen King, I've read probably all of his books at least 2 times. When I got this book for my birthday, I read the inside flaps of the book and thought I wouldn't like it. I expected a supernatural story with vampires and ghosts and other stuff like that (but, hey, doesn't all Stephen King fans expect that).

I started reading the book. It is about a 9 year old girl named Trisha, who lives with her brother and mom, her parents are divorced. Her brother is constantly arguing with her mom because he wants to live with their dad. Trisha's mom is always taking Trisha and her brother on family outings, despite Trisha's brother's complaints. This is where it begins.

They're hiking in the woods in Maine, and Trisha decides to go pee. Her mom and her brother are fighting so she walks off without telling one of them. She goes off and then gets lost trying to find her way back. I was stuck in the book thinking about what would happen to Trisha.

I felt sorry for her and was hoping for her to get out of the woods, but I won't tell you if she does, you have to read that and find that out yourself. Stephen King does an excellent job of writing a real life terror story. It made me think about various endings during the time I read it and when I was finished, I finished it in about 1:30 hours. I recommend that you buy this book and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A page turner
I enjoyed every word of this book. It was the perfect post Christmas book for me. I always enjoy Stephen King's works. I'm honestly suprised that I haven't read more of his books and short stories than I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book for those who normally wouldn't read Stephen King
I gave this to my secretary to read, who is the member of a literary club and had never read anything by King. She was hesitant but at my recommendation she read it. She loved it and it gave her a whole new appreciation for King.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stephen King Writes Awesome Books
I really enjoyed this horror novel. But I didn't like they way Stephen kept saying that she didn't even notice she was doing it and the way he described to God of the Lost. But overall, this is an awesome book. Very hard to put down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Read!
In this book, Amber has a growth spurt, and is enjoying fourth grade. She is worried about her parents because they fight like children. Her mother is engaged to be married again and Amber is concerned about her love for her father. What's a fourth grader to do?

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Amber Brown book
I simply adore Amber Brown books!I love Amber Brown sees red because it is so funny. I especially like the bit when her school is full of skunks. My second favourite character is Brenda the Amber sitter because her hair is always a different colour, she wears wacky clothes, wears loads of earings and seems to be the best babysitter ever!Keep writing, Paula.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Easy Reader
The book was ok. In most of it I thought it was very good. I thought the part when they had a skunk day was pretty funny. I rated it with four stars because it was a good book, just not the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amber Brown Sees Red
I am a seventh grader from Michigan and I read Amber Brown Sees Red for a book report project. I think evey student from ages nine to thirteeen should read the book. It's a story about a girl named Amber Brown who's dealing with school, friends, and family. Amber's parents are divorced and she lives with her mom and her mom's fiancee' Max. Her father lives in Paris , France, and he's moving back to the U.S. Whenever Amber's dad calls, her mom has to talk to him first and they always fight. Amber doesn't know how to get them to stop fighting and listen to her. When her father moves back, she will be living with him part time because of shared custody, but she feels split. Amber is getting so mad shes seeing "red."

5-0 out of 5 stars Amber Brown Sees Red

So she made a terrific plan. After A few days she recieved a phone call from her dad telling her that he is going to come and move. When Amber Browns mother found out she ran and started crying. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Little House Book Improved
This book is a tad more exciting then Laura's books, it gets to the point, I suppose. A reccomended read for those who enjoy adventure and historic fiction as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best parts of the Little House books all rolled into one
The best parts of "Plum Creek", Little Town on the Prarie", "The Long Winter" and "Happy Golden Years" all rolled into one. Very exciting. I could not put it down. She gets right to the action, and leaves out all of the uneventful chapters on weaving, needlework and churning butter, etc., that her mother put into the Little House books. You can see that the best parts of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books were a direct result of Rose Wilder Lane's input. Her writing is vivid and exciting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Wonderful story, but much harsher and bleaker than her mother's own writings about settling in the West. A stunning work about a struggle for independence I couldn't even imagine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Young Pioneers is a book you can not put down.
Young Pioneers is a good book if you love reading about how our country became seltled in the west by the young, brave people like Molly and David. Rose Wilder Lane is a great author just like her mother Laura Ingalls Wilder. If you enjoy Laura's books, you will enjoy Rose's also. Young Pioneers is a great story about how life was like in the 1800s. I really enjoyed this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.
I went into reading this book not sure what to expect. It was reflective of the Little House books, but I was instantly hooked by the suspense of the plot and the events. Although this was meant for children, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am a huge fan of all the Little House books, and this one just earned a spot on my bookshelf. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars substandard- caroline can do better
This book, although very funny, centres too much on the narrator's discovery of her "real" self- feelings are dealt with to the extent of boredom, and the character of Angus deserves the limelight given to Shelley- she thinks like no other teenager and never realises that the reason her siblings are idolised and admired is because they are more interesting. Her aunt Maggie's transformation from bossy determined arrogant mother to realising her faults after one sharp sentence from Shelley is idealistic and unrealistic. ... Read more

Perched in the branches of her favorite tree with her sketchbook, Anne-Marie watches the world go by. While recording her observations of neighbors, friends, and family, she thinks about her father, who left two years before; about Mike, who seems to be trying to take his place; about her twin sister, Mary Anne, who looks like her (at least to adults) but sees things very differently. Poems in Anne-Marie's voice, sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, and always honest, take readers through a year of change in the life of a family and in Anne-Marie's heart. Illustrations that include paintings, drawings, and collage capture the text's emotional range and Anne-Marie's own artistic vision. ... Read more

Every child will relate to something different. The children for whom I bought this book didn't relate. It was too boring and they lost interest in hearing it read. I loved all the ideas, but would recommend reading it at a library to your child first to see if they respond to the style of writing. I would highly recommend "The Unwedding" as an alternative. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not more then OK
It was a great pleasure to discover that Louise Fitzhugh has written two more books besides "Harriet the Spy" which is one of the greatest children books ever. As an adult I was thrilled to be able to reunite with all the great characters and especially with Sport, one of "Harriet the Spy" most beloved characters. This book however, was quite a let down. Not a total disappointement, as some of the parts do hold part of the magic ( I for example loved the part where Sport looks around the table to check all the good foods prepared by Kate) but not in a way that is able to overcome the flaws of this book.
I believe the best thing about "Harriet the Spy" was the fact that the characters, and especially the heroine were so unique - they were something you have never met before. There was never any heroine quite like Harriet and all the events of her tale are new and refreshing (at least in the way these events and happenings are interpreted by the heroine). This feeling does not exist when reading about Sport. The characters do not capture your heart in the same way because their portrayal is somewhat corny and stereotyped. You do feel you have read something similar before. This is especially true of Sport's mother and her sister which are as "bad" as bad can be and are therefore totally uncredible. One finds it hard to believe that the mother, even if she was acting out of pure greed would not at least try to win her son's heart or act so stupidly. I did expect characters which are rounder figures and not just "evil" - as the mother (did she have to look evil on the outside too?), or "good" as the new stepmother appears to be. The friends are also portrayed in the same manner and in spite of Fitzhugh's effort to inject some social issues (the policemen are after the black kid) the book does not rise above the level of an OK story.

1-0 out of 5 stars A terrible disappointment.
"Harriet The Spy" is one of the best children's novels I've read, and the sequel, "The Long Secret," is as good if not better. "Sport," though, is not in the same league.

The biggest problem with "Sport" is that Ms. Fitzhugh doesn't understand what makes boys tick. She understands girls, and that's why "Harriett" and "Secret," both of which have female protagonists, work so well. "Sport" is not credible because the protagonist does not think or act like a 12-year-old boy.

What's especially exasperating is the way the author shows him gladly giving up his role as housekeeper when his father decides to remarry. I can believe his welcoming a stepmother, but not his willingly--indeed blissfully--subordinating himself to her, when for all his life he'd pretty much taken care of his kindly but bumbling father. No, there'd have been some TERRIBLE territorial struggles.

Sport's estranged mother, and her whole family, are excruciating stereotypes, so clumsily drawn that one has to cringe with embarrassment whenever they appear. The plot is trite and ridiculous. Sport's friends are superficially drawn and the boys are particularly unbelievable.

...

5-0 out of 5 stars More Sport!
I have been a Harriet The Spy fan for a long time, and I knew there was a sequel to the first book (called The Long Secret) which I've read. But only recently did I know there was a book about Sport, one of my favorite characters from the stories. I got this book right away...I don't know what everyone is talking about, about this book being out of print since it was easy enough for me to get, right at the bookstore.
This book is about Sport's life after his last year at The Gregory School, when he has to go to a new school. His mother (the witch that she is) comes suddenly back into his life when his grandfather departs from the world...leaving alot of money behind him. Also, his father has a new girlfriend. ;)
Sport is a GREAT book, it's an adventure that's worthy of a movie itself, however I don't believe anyone ever made one about it. :/
I think that every Harriet The Spy and/or Louise Fitzhugh fan should read this book for sure! If you haven't read Harriet The Spy, read that book and The Long Secret first. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of "Harriet" trilogy...
When I first moved to New York, I made it a point to go to the Olde Heidelberg (now Heidelberg) for dinner because it's where Sport's father takes his girlfriend, Kate, on their first date. That was three years ago; I read "Sport" sixteen years before that. (No one has ever accused me of normal behavior.) Suffice it to say, this book remains one of my favorites. Charlotte Vane (Sport's evil, avaricious mother) remains one of the most convincing--and terrifying--villains in children's literature and, in my opinion, Sport's father, the sweet, absent-minded writer Matthew Rocque, ranks right up there with Rhett Butler and Atticus Finch as one of those fictional fellows you'd marry if he were only real. And of course, Sport himself is a gem--funny, smart, and streetwise, he's the kind of kid we all wish we once were, or still could be. An absolute must-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars YEEAAHOO!
I read Sport at school. I just finished it today and I'm sorry I did; it was one of the best books I've ever read. I'm so mad that it's out of print. I want to have it at home so I can read it even after I leave this school. If you can find it anywhere (which I doubt you will) I highly recommend it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Stop pretending you care!
What hearts is a well thought out book it has a lot to do with being neglected by his mom and step father. I thought this book was depressing. I am a happy person who enjoys smiles all the time. I get mad at myself when my friends get mad at me because i know i would never want someone to be hurt by something I have done. I felt that 'WHAT HEARTS" isn't a good book for you too read if you are looking for romance, love, friendship, but its a good book if you want too see what others go through who at times are not as loved as much by parents because they don't care as much as they need to for their child, they only care about themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This book... is simply amazing. Asa, the main character, is a intelligent little boy faced with important and daunting changes in his life, starting the last day of first grade, and carrying on until he's in 7th. Asa's plight is described in such a way as to make you connect with him.
"What Hearts" is, while not quite 'dark', definitly poignant. It is the type of book you cannot put down and that you re-read often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight from the heart
There are have been an incredible amount of books written in recent years for young people, but even if you exclude the junk there are very few that can be called really great. Bruce Brooks' "What Hearts" is one of these.

Brooks presents his basic themes, forgiveness (a rather unusual subject) and the meaning of love, with absolute sincerity. Asa's feelings and problems are real. It doesn't matter how different your life and problems may be from Asa's; if you are sensitive to your own feelings, I think you will be able to identify with his.

This may sound a bit odd, but it's also one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. I might particularly cite, in the second chapter, Asa's forgiveness and acceptance of his friend Joel. The end of this chapter is truly wonderful; all by itself, this would make the book a great one. Also the almost heartbreaking, though very beautiful, concluding chapter, one of the most sensitive and true descriptions of love (and, once again, forgiveness) that I know.

All in all it's a masterpiece. Sure, hardly any book is absolutely flawless, and "What Hearts" is no exception. But the author's remarkable perception, exquisite writing, and love for the human heart transcend any small faults you might find with the story. It is one of those rare books that really come from the heart.

3-0 out of 5 stars i kinda liked it! not really!?¿

Book Description

Family secrets, forgotten memories, and the transforming power of truth

It's been six years since sixteen-year-old Dec's free-spirited
mother, Lindy, disappeared. Dec feels so trapped in the present,
he's avoided examining his past. But when an intruder dies in
the museum-like family home, the man's death sends forth
tremors that reawaken forgotten memories. Suddenly Dec is
flooded with visions of his mother so tangible it's hard to
believe they're not real. At least Dec has his best friend -
gifted, funny Ezra - to help him sort out what's real and what
isn't. But as Dec's dream visions of his mother turn into
nightmares, Ezra announces he's going away, leaving Dec
haunted by questions that must be answered. What did happen
to his mother? And who really is the thief in the house of
memory?

In this masterful new novel, Tim Wynne-Jones explores with
wit, compassion, and humor the fictional territory he knows
best - the prickly ties that bind families, the murky connections
between imagination and real life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly funny.
This book is actually one of the funniest I've ever read: "This must be it! I thought to myself as I ran to the door. Quickly, I pulled it open. There stood Hank. Hank is one of my mother's cousins. She has three of them. The other one is Hank." This book is funny enough for adults to be amused and never gets preachy or condescending. It's a good book to teach kids about divorce, also. Highly reccomended for any age!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book deserves six stars!
This book deserves six stars! It was very funny. My favorite part was after the school program when Charles's mother came over to him and whispered to him that his zipper was down and when he saw the underwear all bunched up in his zipper! I like Barbara Park's books. She is today's funniest writers for children. I hope she keeps on writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful.
When Charlie learns that his parents are getting a divorce, he won't take it lying down!! Never!! He'll do anything to get them back together. ANYTHING, including run away. This is a hilarious and heart-warming book about a boy's way of coping with divorce. ... Read more
