Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and children's picture book author Berkeley Breathed crafts a remarkable, hilarious, and yes, even poignant celebration of "flawed dogs": "The bent and plain,/ The unbalanced bod,/ The imperfect people/ And differently pawed." At the core of this "2004 Catalogue of the Piddleton Dog Pound's Very Available Leftovers" is Heidy Strudelberg, "Garbo, Joan of Arc, and Mother Teresa of the nation's unwanted dogs: a reclusive warrior-saint of poundpups." Breathed reveals how Heidy was ousted from the high-falutin’ vanity dog breeding world when she awarded a muddy three-legged street mutt the Westminster Best in Show ribbon. Now, it seems, Heidy has retreated to the Vermont mountains to run the Last Chance Dog Pound, where defective dogs go for one more attempt at getting adopted. The bulk of Flawed Dogs, once you've laughed your way through the introductions and formalities, is a gallery of pathetic pups with accompanying verses. A picture of an extra-long Dachshund startling the dishes right out of her mistress's hands, is captioned thus: "Here’s Sal, it seems no one wants her./ Her ends will stroll off and wander./ A long doggie weenie/ Of noisy linguine/ Sal barks at her butt way down yonder." Dog lovers will be all in a tizzy to get their hands on this crazy, wonderful salute to blemished beagles and faulty foxhounds everywhere. (Ages 8 and older) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations
With a name like Berkeley Breathed you'd better be a Pulitzer-Prize winning illustrator with the talent to boot; otherwise, you yourself might end up in the Piddleton Last-Chance Dog Pound as just another flawed, unloved, and rejected mammal, whether canine or human. This funny book brings together a gaggle of aesthetically challenged canines for whom Lady Luck seems to have happily passed them by. Some of their owners are almost as unprepossessing, but you know what they say about dog owners resembling their dogs. Some of them are so homely they're almost cute, but I guess that wasn't enough to save them from the pound. This is another funny and beautifully illustrated children's book from Breathed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and moving...the perfect book!
As someone involved with dog rescue, it was easy to "recognize" all of the dogs and their situations. Dogs (and cats) end up at pounds and shelters by the MILLIONS each year for reasons as diverse as "I'm moving", to "I didn't know they would shed". And sadly, the majority of these dogs end up being put to death. In this wonderful book, Mr. Breathed brings attention to the plight of these creatures while entertaining, fabulously! I recommend this for every animal lover and Berkeley Breathed fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB...Berkeley Is A Genius again and again! Ages 3 - 150
Been an enormous fan of the man for years. Bloom County was epic, a force in the papers that left little else. I've always been amazed at how he's carried the texture and grace of the comic strip to book form, and he has once again. Going far beyond typical illustration, he's evolved the art form into it's next phase...awesome!!

This book is incredible. I said astounding and I mean it, as even I didn't intend to be as moved as I was. There's a thinly veiled metaphor here, and hits its mark completely. Thank you so much, Mr. Berkeley, for once again raising the bar high above the rest. You'll always occupy that space with Shel Silverstein and his like. For all ages, a comedic, emotional masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful!!
Everyone who had ever owned a "flawed" animal of any kind should have a copy of this beautiful tribute! The artwork is extraordinary and the rhymes whimsical. Berkely Breathed is magical!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
I bought this book for myself because I love Berke Breathed's art first, and am a dog lover second. This beautiful, whimsical and charming book made me laugh and pulled my heart strings enough for me to purchase 4 more copies and give them as gifts to my friends who also have dogs of their own, flawed or otherwise. Wonderful for kids of all ages. ... Read more

Book Description

Poodlena is a star. Every day she powders and pinks herself to perfection. And every day she parades through the park, keeping clean and perfect. One day, after a heavy rain, another dog knocks poor Poodlena right off the path and into a giant mud puddle. The mud is dirty and icky. . . and so much fun! Now Poodlena still primps and pinks herself close to perfect-but she always saves time for playing with friends, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Poodlena
Poodlena Pompadour, the dainty pink puddle, lives a rather glamorous life-style on the top floor of a high-rise. Her male owner fluffs her cotton candy-like head of hair, which is of course pink, as well as, powders and perfumes her each day before her afternoon play time at the park. Much too stunning to join in with the other dogs in their rough games, Poodlena simply remains spotless on the sidewalk. After a heavy rainfall an unforeseen twist occurs that alters Poodlena's prissy routine.
E. B. McHenry's charming story is definitely a girly-girl book. With the powder pink pages and countless beauty supplies many girls will be able to relate to the primping that Poodlena endures. The surroundings appear French, from the manuscript font to Poodlena's owner's attire. The song-like verse and softly painted illustrations are remarkable. E. B. McHenry's writing style resembles David Kirk of the Miss Spider books. E. B. McHenry writes in four-line rhyming verses, similar to Mr. Kirk, to tell the frilly life of "little miss" Poodlena, whose daily regimen keeps her pristine.

excerpt:

"In a big-city high-rise
On the very top floor
Lived a pink, fluffy poodle-
Poodlena Pompadour.

She wore on her head
A pink mountain of hair,
As light as a feather,
And mostly pink air." ... Read more

Book Description

Togo wasn't meant to be a sled dog. He was too feisty and independent to make a good team member, let alone a leader. But Togo is determined, and when his trainer, Leonhard Seppala, gives him a chance, he soon becomes one of the fastest sled dogs in history! His skills are put to the ultimate test, though, when Seppala and his team are called on to make the now-famous run across the frozen Arctic to deliver the serum that will save Alaska from a life-threatening outbreak of diphtheria.

In the style of Akiak, winner of the Irma S. and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Children's Literature, along with five state awards, Robert J. Blake's detailed, carefully researched oil paintings complete the story of the adventure that inspired the internationally famous Iditarod race.

5-0 out of 5 stars Togo the real hero of the Iditarod
I read this book in my third grade class. It is an exciting story about the sled dog Togo. Togo has the heart of a real hero because he wanted more than anything to lead a dog team. This book makes you cheer for Togo. I used to think Balto was the hero of the Iditarod until I read this book. I love the beautiful pictures drawn by the author. It is a book I will keep forever.

Togo is a beautifully written book for children. The character of this special dog shines through these pages to inspire young and old. Also a great read for adults who love animal stories.

The boy's father is a sharecropper, struggling to feed his family in hard times. Night after night, he and his great coon dog, Sounder, return to the cabin empty-handed. Then, one morning, almost like a miracle, a sweet-smelling ham is cooking in the family's kitchen. At last the family will have a good meal. But that night, an angry sheriff and his deputies come, and the boy's life will never be the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sounder
I think the book, Sounder, by William H. Armstrong, was very good. The story is about a boy who has a dog named Sounder. The family is poor so the father must steal to feed his family. His father is taken to jail and Sounder tries to protect him but gets hurt. What I thought was interesting about this book is the story is based upon William Armstrong's teacher's life experience of this. I enjoyed the way it made me think about the story in different ways. I enjoyed the characters because they had distinct personalities. For instance, the boy was very determined to find his father, and the other characters thoughts and emotions were very well described. All of the story elements together helped me picture the story as if I had witnessed it. The setting was described in great detail just like the plot and the characters were also. It was amazing that everything about the book could seem so real. The thing I enjoyed most in the story was the way the dog's bark was described. It was described with beautifully written similes and metaphors to portray how it sounded. The dog, Sounder, was named for it's bark because people could hear the bark louder and richer than any other dog's bark. For all of these reasons I will highly recommend this book with five out of five stars. There were only two things in this story I did not like very much. One is the abruptness of the time periods. In one paragraph it went from seasons to years. Another is that not very much detail about the boy when he was searching for his father was given. Overall though, I felt this book was one that should be read more than once.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sounder
This childrens book by William Howard Armstrong digs into the life of a young black boy, his father and their dog, Sounder. It is set in the old south and details the struggles of an African American family of this time. The usual struggles for this family are getting food and staying warm until one terriable night that changes the family forever. The father is taken to jail and Sounder is wounded in the struggle. From that night on the boys life is faced with even more struggles to survive, as he is hoisted to the head of the house. He worries about his fathers well being, which sends him onn many adventures looking for him. Through all of the bad the boy does manage to find the good in all occasions.
This would be a great read for fourth to eighth grade students. It is a truthful and detailed insight into the history of the African-American race.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sounder
I think Sounder is a fairly boring book, and i should know i'm a book worm. i read about half the book then i started skimming, becaus it was so boring. i mean almost no one but the dog had a name. i believe you have to have a name not just a description to make an interesting person. also i belive that it is based on a true story, and i find most of those to be boring. i recommend this for adults, but not for kids. they'd probally get tired of it in the first two chapters.

2-0 out of 5 stars Like a roller coaster - some parts are good - some parts suc
I had to read Sounder for a novel class. Judging by the cover I knew it will be a boring story and I was right. Some chapters didnt even make sense and it was confusing cuz the characters didnt have names except the dog Sounder. It was pretty boring. Only the end was good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sounder's Voice Is Heard
This book tells the story of a sharecropper's family and their dog, Sounder. The story happens in the 19th century American South.

More importantly, I feel this story tells about courage and determination during hard times.

The focus is on Sounder because he is a hunting dog and a major contributor to the families' food supply. however, I think Sounder is the only character named in this story for deeper reasons.

When the father is taken to jail on some trumped-up charge, Sounder is seriously wounded trying to protect him. Despite his crippling injury, Sounder returns home. Sounder's recovery and persistance is a symbol of what the family members want to do. When the father returns, also crippled, the old dog, previously silent, lets out one last resounding, triumphant bark.

This is a compassionate and compelling book, one I couldn't put down. Even though it was sad, it was full of love. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mary: A "Dog Lover" Plus
This book is about a man named Gary Paulsen and all of the dogs he has owned that have had an effect on his life. Each chapter is about a different dog, and what it did to make the dog special to Gary.
Because I am a "dog lover" I thought this book was great. It is written very well and I think it was worth reading. I like how it is about all different kinds of dogs, each dog has different personality and a different story. It's pretty exciting to read because you're always wondering what the next dog is going to do, whether it is saving someone's life or just making someone smile. Until you read My Life In Dog Years you probably won't realise the impact our pets or animals can have on our lives. There is an amazing relationship that we have with our pets and this book captures that.
I recommend My Life In Dog Years to only people who truly love dogs. If you are not a "dog person" then I highly doubt you would enjoy this book. My Life In Dogs Years is written at a 6th grade level, but it is read by all different ages. It is a great book and if you love dogs then I guarantee you will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dog lovers, Paulsen fans, YA lovers, you've GOT to read it!
Gary Paulsen never lets me down. Written at about a 6th grade level, the text is still eloquent, wonderful writing with stories I enjoyed even as an adult reader. Paulsen chronicles his amazing life through the lens of a dog lover, relating his own experiences with several of his dog friends over the years. As an avid Paulsen fan and a "dog person" myself, I could not put the book down, and found myself going from tears to nodding my head in recognition to laughing out loud. I've got a long list of fellow "dog people" with whom I can't wait to share this treasure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dogs a Million
I chose this book, bcause it really looked interesting. This book is about the author, Gary Paulsen, and some of his dogs he has owned. My favorite dog was Josh, because he was the smartest and he always watched over his owner and friends. My favorite part was when another dog of his, Quincy, had jumped out of Paulsen's car into Dairy Queen. Over all, this book was too good to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming -- not maudlin -- read
What a wonderful book, simply written in E.B. White style, with each chapter a jewel. I cried at the end of each installment! I purchased three copies as gifts for others. A must read, and not just for children, for doglovers of all ages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wherefore Spot?
I dunno. For as long as Spot has existed, children have loved him. And honestly? I really couldn't tell you why. I've nothing against Spot, really. I've nothing for him either, and herein lies the problem. Spot is a bland "Ziggy"-like creation. The books that present him are neither particularly interesting, witty, or sublime to the average adult reader. Critics would argue that this is precisely the point and that children don't need the same kinds of books as adults. I remain unconvinced and point out that when there are such marvelous and simple children's books as "Olivia" or "Rosie's Walk" or "Gossie and Gertie" for kids today, why turn around and pick up the fine but dull "Where's Spot?"? One has to wonder.

In this book, Sally (perhaps the parent of the elusive puppy) is searching for the book's title character. As she runs around the house the viewer is able to open doors, lift bed curtains, and pry into the cabinets that Sally spies as well. Behind each, a different animal (or animals) stands there saying, "No" when asked if Spot is hiding there. I'll hand this to the creator. The 1994 edition I was handling held up very very well over the years. This book has been constructed with tough pages that little one's hands are adept at opening without the rippage usually so common. The animals are cute and the parents can maybe name them with their kids as they go. Just the same, don't be surprised if the crocodile under the bed gives a couple squeamish children the creeps for a while.

In conclusion...eh. It's not bad, it's not good, it's not much of anything. It doesn't teach and if it entertains then that's fine. If you've a tender place in your heart for the other books in the Spot series, go wild. This book will certainly live up to expectations. If, however, your expectations are built on such solid kid-friendly yet really amusing stand-bys as "Sesame Street" or other witty genres, prepare to be disappointed. While a fine story, it leaves much to be desired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Spot
My daughter loves "Where's Spot?" "Spot" was one of her first words and when she was able to walk saying "Where's Spot?" was a way to have her bring you the book. Apparently, there is something wonderful about Spot. Check it out.

Truly one of the best children's books out there. The illustrations are incredibly rich, colorful and detailed and the story is so inventive and charming. I love Maxi! I bought this book today and read it to my 4 month old daughter. It held her attention the entire time--quite a feat! It's no wonder--the beautiful lyrical story with its rhymes and the gorgeous artwork are a delightful combination. I can't say enough about this charming story. What a plus that proceeds of the book go to a worthy animal cause. I want to see more of Maxi's adventures!

I read this book to my son when he was 5 yrs old as part of the scholastic book order through his school. My son is now going to be graduating from high school and he still has the book. However, it has seen better days since it is in paperback! The first time I read this book to him, believe it or not, I got choked up. The illustrations and the story itself are outstanding. He treasures this book as a very happy childhood memory. I've decided as part of his graduation present that I would get the brand new hard cover so that he may always cherish it and read it to his own kids some day. :o)

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

"It was a great day for a picnic," begins Marc Simont's lovely, touching, happy-ending picture book, The Stray Dog. And indeed, judgingfrom the opening spread's clear skies, sparkling water, zooming boats, andadventure-bound cars it looks to be so. The story begins as a scruffy little dogmakes an appearance at a family's picnic. The children name him Willy, and bythe end of the day they desperately want to take him home. The family drivesaway, but all week they can think of nothing but their new furry friend. Theyreturn to picnic at the same spot the very next week, much to Willy's goodfortune--and that of the newly smitten family.

As in all the best illustrated children's books, Simont lets his pictures tellthe story. We don't have to be told how wrenching it is for the kids to leaveWilly behind--we see their small outstretched arms out the car window and thepuppy watching them go. Simont doesn't have to tell us that the next Saturdaythe family is completely preoccupied with the possibility of another Willysighting. We see the family, silent, munching, and just to the side is a plateof meat they've put out, just in case. Young readers will adore this simple taleof puppy love, but adults will be equally charmed. Simont illustrated his firstbook in 1939, and since then has illustrated nearly 100 titles, including the1949 Caldecott Honor Book TheHappy Day, by Ruth Krauss and Janice May Udry's A Tree Is Nice, winner of the1957 Caldecott Medal. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I bought this book in a paperback version at a book fair. I heard good things about it and I like Marc Simont's illustrations in other books. I picked it up because it is a Caldecott Honor Book. It turns out to be a beautiful story that everyone in the family will enjoy. It is based on a true story but depicted in a way that children can understand the storyline easily. It shows children that fall in love with a stray and the parents tell the kids that the dog must belong to someone else. Eventually, everyone in the family is thinking about the dog and what happened with him. At the end of the week, they return to find the dog running from the dog catcher. I am not sure if children are familiar with dog catchers but it can lead into a discussion. It shows that the family is willing to take on the responsibility of loving a stray. It shows empathy to animals and caring by kids. Children need to learn love animals but to be careful of stray animals. However, children will be moved by this sweet story and cheer for the dog! I definitely recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love at First Sight
One Saturday a very nice family of four go to the park for a picnic and find a straggly stray pup. They name him Willy and spend the day playing with him. When it's time to pack up and go, the children want to take Willy home with them, but their parents tell them no, Willy probably belongs to someone else and they sadly leave him behind. The next week is excruciatingly long and whole family spends it thinking about Willy. When Saturday comes, they go back to the park on the pretense of another picnic, but are really hoping to find Willy. Just when they think they'll never see him again, he appears, in the dog catcher's net. Happily, the family claims him...Willy's found a new home and they've found a new pet..... Award winner, Marc Simont has written a lovely, gentle, true to life story that will capture your family's heart. His simple and straighforward text is only outdone by his very detailed and expressive artwork. While looking at these illustrations, youngsters will actually feel the joy of finding this little furry friend, sense the sadness of leaving him behind and worry, right along with the family, about his welfare. This is a terrific picture book, perfect for kids aged 3-7, your entire family can share and a wonderful addition to all home libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Stray Dog
My children(ages 6,4,2) and I love this book. It has a lovely little story with a very nice message. Any parent or child who loves animals, especially dogs, will love this story. The illustrations are lovely too. Highly recommended for children aged 2-8.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and beautifully illustrated
There are certain books that I hope my 3-year-old will pick out for me to read to her. You know the type; you move them to her eye level and hope that the power of suggestion works. This is one of those books.

The illustrations are so beautiful, I wish I could find the original galleys for the book and frame them. The story is everything that's good in the world: compassionate children, understanding parents and (of course) happy dogs.

There was an earlier reviewer who was appalled the story didn't have the parents bring the dog to the SPCA to go through the proper channels for adoption. A nice thought, but I used to volunteer at an animal shelter and I have news for you: If people didn't rescue strays, shelters would be more overcrowded than they are now. The way of the world is 100 abandoned animals come into a shelter for every 1 that is reunited with an owner. With that in mind, "The Stray Dog" is even more touching.

5-0 out of 5 stars A winner
This lovely book, a true story, spans several age groups--2 year olds can respond to pictures of the puppy, the family, the picnic, while older kids can relate to missing the dog during the week and the children's successful effort to claim him as their own. The author uses simple enough language for beginning readers without being simplistic, accompanied by excellent color illustrations. The Caldecott prize is well-deserved. ... Read more

The courageous journey of three animals running away from home in search of their family. The three house pets must survive without being eaten buy bigger animals, starve to death, and exposure.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book ever
The Incredible Journey is the best book I have ever read. It is the best suspense book, too. I think Sheila Burnford is the best descriptive writer I've ever read. This book is about two dogs and a cat . They have to go two hundred and thirty miles to find their owner at a river canoeing . The owner left them home and had somebody look after them . The person showed up late and the animals went to find their owner. The animals have to deal with wild animals like bears and porcupines. They also nearly starve while trying to be with their owner at the river. All in all, I think you should read this well-written book. You will find out how much animals love people and it teaches us to work together. There is so much more in this book. So, if you like suspense this is a great book to read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Super cuddly
This tells the story of the daring escape and heartbreaking trials of three ultimate cyborg assassins: a dog named Bandit, a cat named Tinker, and a rabbit named Pirate, armed with missiles, poison gas, state-of-the-art computer technology, rapid fire chain guns and unbreakable exo-skeletons. Wait, that might actually be We3. The stories are somewhat similar.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Cat and Two Dogs
I came to the book by way of the Disney movie. The book is better than the movie. Dog and cat lovers will enjoy the book most. There isn't much in the way of action.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Boring Book!
This book stinks so bad. I had to read it for school and I would never read it if I had a choice. It was very boring because it had very little action. If I had it my way, I would have stopped reading this book after the first page. It starts out with a guy on his rocker with three animals by a fire. The animals are supposedly not his and they go out searching for their original owners. I would not recommend this book to any human beings alive. This book is very boring. ... Read more

Book Description

A dog's account of one of the most extraordinary expeditions of all time.

"Dog and man can fit together like no others do. Lewis and I had that fit....

How did we get that close? I think the wilderness had something to do with it. Lewis and I would have been close anywhere, but the wilderness brought out the best in both of us. We were made for that territory."

In 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set off on a journey to explore the vast territory of the United States west of the Mississippi River. Accompanying Lewis and Clark and their team of explorers through this uncharted wilderness was Lewis' dog Seaman.

Lewis and Clark and Me is Seaman's story. From his first meeting with Lewis, to being mistaken for a bear by Indians who had never seen such a large dog, to his encounters with wild animals both familiar and unfamiliar, Seaman's tales are filled with the joys of companionship and the tingling excitement of adventure.

Seaman's stories are based information provided in the explorers' journals. The book include many of these direct quotes from the original text as well as a detailed map showing the highlights of this amazing expedition.

One day a weary traveler named Meriwether Lewis asks two soldiers on the docks he was stationed at where he could get a dog. To his luck they end up giving him Seaman.
Seaman gets his first trial. The men are starting to get hungry. Seaman spots a large group of beavers down stream. He decides he could help the crew. What a terrific book!

It is ideal for the pet lover, the low-confidence reader, or the Reading Education Assistance Dogs ("See Spot Read" program)

Although billed as a children's book, the subtle humor and great illustrations make it a winner for adults as well.

I need to buy "Stories you can read to your cat" as well.... wonderful author, great illustrator, an absolute riot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should Be Biscuit's Bedtime
This is the first Biscuit book, wherein we meet the small yellow puppy and the-girl-in-purple-sneakers. It is bedtime but Biscuit, like many children, does not want to go to bed. Instead, he wants to play, snack, drink, get hugged, have a blanket, etc.

Many parents will recognize what Biscuit is doing, avoiding sleep and getting more "mommy time." But in the end, what Biscuit winds up with is to be asleep but not in his own bed, but near the little girl.

Adorable illustrations really make this a fun book for children (sometimes I have my daughter read Biscuit's part, "Woof, woof!"). A great book. Read them all.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comforting Story for the Beginner Reader
Biscut is a cute "small, yellow puppy" owned by an equally adorable 3 to 6 year-old, auburn-haired girl. Most of this 21-page book is in the following format:

Time for bed, Biscuit!
Woof, woof!
Biscuit wants ...

What does Biscut want? Well, he wants "to play, a snack, a drink, to hear a story, his blanket, his doll, a hug, a kiss, a light on, to be tucked in, one more kiss, one more hug, and to curl up." Thirty-five simple words are introduced and many are used over and over again so that the text eventually averages a little more than six words per page. This warm, comforting story is perfect for a child who has just started to learn to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Biscuit book we bought!
This is the first book my daughter, who is 5, really got attached to. She loves it and all the Biscuit books! We just keep buying all we can find about Biscuit. Great beginner reader book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Biscuit
This book is about a little puppy that needs to go to bed, but little Biscuit doesn't want to. He keeps wanting to play, eat, hear a story, then he goes to the little girls room to curl up with her. He finaly falls asleep when he lays on the girls blanket on the floor. I thought this book was so cute. The pictures were really good. This book teaches the children how some pets need this much attention and how they don't always do as they are supposed to.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biscuit
The book Biscuit was about a little girl who had dog that needed lots of attention. Before Biscuit was ready to go to bed the little girl had to feed him, play with him, read him a story, tuck him in, give him a hug and a kiss and leave a light on for Biscuit. Just as the little girl fell asleep Biscuit was in her room and wants more attention. Will Biscuit ever fall asleep?? The lesson that I learn from this story is that having any kind of pet is a lot of responsibility and that you really have to be kind to your animals. The age range of this story I would say would have to be for children two to five years old. ... Read more

Sally Goes to the Mountains is a book I would give as a gift to any dog lover from 4 to 94. It's colorful illustrations, charming and witty captions, subject matter and size makes it the perfect coffee table book. I'll cherish mine forever. I can't wait for the next "Sally" book and plan to visit the huneck.com website to choose a special framed print from this very special book.

5-0 out of 5 stars With bright, superbly crafted woodcut prints
In Sally Goes To The Mountains, author/illustrator Stephen Huneck draws upon his award-winning expertise to take young readers on a romp with a fun-loving black Labrador named Sally. Sally goes for a ride to the mountains where she encounters bears, moose, rabbits, and skunks! There are berries to pick, sticks to fetch, and a lake to swim in. Huneck's bright, superbly crafted woodcut prints perfectly capture the joy of a dog's outing in the mountains for young readers. Also highly recommended is the earlier volume of Sally's adventures, Sally Goes To The Beach (0810941864, [price]).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Huneck fans and animal lovers.
I bought this book for my mom as a present. She already owns the other "Sally" books and loved this one too. The illustrations are beautiful and very whitty. My favorite is the giant moose with Sally. The Sally books aren't just for Lab owners or children--any pet lover will enjoy them.

4-0 out of 5 stars who doesn't love puppies?
my 16 month grandchild loved this book and loved the feel of the "fur" on the pages. The faces on the pups are endearing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Dog Alert
This series of board books are fantastic.

I started collecting these for my daughter after she was given one at 6 months as she loved them so much. The book is simple and easy to read with wonderful real photography (not illustrations)and textures on each page that relate to the text on the page.

It's a great book to get your baby involved in the reading process, to learn what you are saying also means a texture they can actually touch. It's also a book that baby can read alone with easy to turn pages and endless fascination with the different textures.

A wonderful book to get your children learning, thinking and enjoying books. You can never have too many books to read with your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A super touch and feel book!
My daughter has loved this book from age 6 months; she's now 18 months. I think it's held her interest because of the variety of textures and because the dogs are so cute! One reason I like this book, over other DK touch and feel books, is that there is no repetition or forced situations. All the textures are a natural fit. They include: fluffy tummy (the best one!), rubber ball, leathery noses, and fuzzy slipper.

This gets a high recommendation from both baby and mommy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great series for developing readers
My ten year old son is a rapidly developing avid reader who has fallen absolutely in love with this excellent series. Erickson creates rapid narratives filled with honest (and yes, corny) humor and pleasently comic action and an occasional moral or two.

This series provides young readers with a simple, yet appropriately challenging vocabulary. It also provides fine entertainment as it can hold a young man, who favors outdoor activities and sports, and his attention span for countless hours. A most highly reccomended series of books designed to encourage and develop young readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Carl book of all!
This is, by far, the best Carl book (in fact, one of the best of any picture books). My just-turned-two girls have had this book for months, and it is their favorite. Not only is the artwork fantastic, but the book is actually quite clever (I love the scene with the artists painting Carl and the baby in abstract, impressionist and modern art styles). It is filled with spectacular images that grab a toddler's attention, and the detail is enough to keep adults interested, too. Even after reading the book many times, I still find things I hadn't noticed before. The book includes a carousel, flower garden, balloons, ice cream, train, petting zoo (with seals???), slide and much more ... plenty to show and teach your children! [As a side note, apart from this book and "Good Dog, Carl", the other Carl books fall short of our expectations]

5-0 out of 5 stars The favorite book of both our toddlers!!!
We have a few "Carl" books at our house and "Carl's Afternoon in the Park" is the runaway favorite. Both our children get very excited and run to me when I pick up this book. We often find them paging through it on their own as well. They love the balloons, train, park, children's zoo animals and swing -- not to mention the great Carl! This book has been a wonderful addition to our collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can always add your own story
Carl is such a great dog, and the pictures are just beautiful.

There is "no" story line with words so you can talk all about what Carl does or you can say as little as you like to.

Great series books!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for the imagination
I justed picked this book up at the library. I think it's great to have the majority of the book with no words, just gorgeous, colorful pictures. The more detail in the pictures, the better, as my almost-two year old loves to "find things" in them. With no words, he and I can make up our own story, it lets him decide whats happening. I plan to buy a few of the series to have around all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars response to "wayn3 of Warsaw NY"
"Wayn3 of Warsaw NY" needs to LIGHTEN UP and GET A LIFE re: Good Dog Carl review! If you had any slight amount of intellect and insight, you would figure out that children's books are about fantasy, imagination and FUN! It's not about social services, CPS and child abandonment! I'll bet you're a real bore about your children reading/watching Lord of The Rings and/or Harry Potter if this is the case. 5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review on Shiloh
Shiloh is a great and exciting story. A little boy named Marty found a dog and wanted to keep him, it is Judd's dog and he is keeping him. Marty did a lot of work for Judd, but still didn't get Shiloh.
When I think about this book it makes me feel sad and happy. What makes me sad is when a German Shepard attacks Shiloh.
Readers will find this book to be very exciting and want to read on to find out what happens next in the story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Judd's Actions
Shiloh Season is a great book for kids and adults. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor does a great job explaining the story and keeping you on track throughout the book. Shiloh is about a boy named Marty Preston who sees something he should not have seen. Judd Travers is a mean guy who abuses his dogs. Judd went hunting, when it was not hunting season, and he saw a deer so he killed it. Marty promised that he would not tell anyone that Judd killed a deer if Judd would give up his dog named Shiloh to Marty. Judd agreed. Now Judd is depressed and he drinks and drives. Marty's dad found a beer can on their property, which had the same brand of beer that Judd drinks. Judd continues to drink and hunt more and more often. Shiloh is a very interesting book because I never wanted to stop reading it and it kept coming with surprises. Shiloh is better than other books because it keeps you interested in finding out what happens next throughout the book. Other books are boring and make you want to go to sleep because they are not interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I love this book. I also love the sequils! I read the first one in fourth grade and I read the other two in the summer time. I thought all the books were sad espectially this one. judd is a rude selfish and absolutely unkind resident. I just feel so bad about what people in the book had to go through. he steels and lies and never bothers to help anyone! if you like the first book you'll like all of them!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Shiloh Trilogy a review by Jacob
Did you ever save an animal from a person who didn't treat it right? In the Shiloh Trilogy, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, a boy named Marty Preston of Friendly, West Virginia, is the protagonist of this story. Marty dislikes Judd Travers because Judd is treating a dog named Shiloh like a staircase by kicking and abusing him. Judd also shoots his gun just to startle Shiloh and scare him. Shiloh keeps running away from Judd because Judd is cruel to Shiloh. Who wouldn't! Shiloh keeps on running away from Judd's trailer to Marty's house. Should Marty give Shiloh back to the evil clutches of Judd or lie to Judd for the better?
One of the most exciting events of the story is when Judd started drinking. When Judd starts drinking, he becomes dangerous wherever he goes. It is like putting a gun to your head when he is around. Judd was so drunk that one day he drove his own truck into the ditch at midnight. If it wasn't for Shiloh, Judd would have been there until the next morning and that would have been too late. Once Marty and Shiloh were walking around the woods, when Judd tried to shoot at Shiloh or Marty. Will Judd ever stop drinking and stop this chaos?
Another exciting event that happened in the book was when the Prestons invited Judd over for Thanksgiving. We all know how that turned out! Judd just talked about how Marty owes the use of Shiloh for hunting. When Judd was sitting at the Preston's table, Marty's little sister, Becky used the incorrect words that made Judd's blood boil. Becky has the biggest mouth! Judd stomped out the door without a "thank you" or a "goodbye". Do you want to know what the words Becky used that made Judd so mad? Too bad. You have to read the story yourself!
After all this, will Judd come to his senses and accept the fact that Shiloh rightfully belongs to Marty? Will Judd stop drinking? Will Becky ever learn to watch what she says? Find out by reading the Shiloh Trilogy by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars no one understands dogs like Steven Huneck
This book is amazing. I recently lost my beloved companion of 9 years, and when I saw this book I had to buy it. I am proud to say I'm originally from Vermont and have been a fan of Steven Huneck for years. He has outdone himself with "The Dog Chapel." The illustrations and simple phrases reflect the love between a dog and his person. I miss my friend, but Huneck's book has helped me to grieve and heal.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dog Chapel
Mr. Hunek conveys the power of the animal/human bond through beautiful photos of the chapel and whimsical woodcuts that describe the characteristics of our canine companions. The book tells how this unique chapel came to be built following the authors critical illness. As the sign outside the chapel says, "All breeds and all creeds welcome. No dogma allowed". This book would make a cherished gift for all dog lovers regardless of their religious or spiritual beliefs. ... Read more

If you think living, breathing puppies are cute, wait until you see thisfabulous book of photographs of fruit-and-vegetable dogs. Yes, Saxton Freymannand Joost Elffers (Play with Your Food, How Are You Peeling?, One Lonely Seahorse) are back, with one of their best efforts to date. Not only are the doggies themselvesendearing and clever (the broccoli-tufted French poodle is pure genius), but thewordplay and visual punch lines are terrific as well. "Chilly dog," crafted froma potato, shivers next to a mushroom snowman. "Dog bowl," contrary to what youmight envision, is a dog made out of a radish, with a black olive on its paw, poised to topple banana-tip bowling pins. "Dog catcher," reveals a jalapeñodachshund catching a squash Frisbee in midair. "Let sleeping dogs lie" you say? There they are, sleepy, sleepy banana peel dogs at the end. The eye-poppingendpapers showcase the entire kennel of creations on a bright turquoisebackground. This immensely appealing book will be irresistible to almost anyhuman, but dog (and produce) lovers will sprout wings and zoom skyward. (Ages 4to 104) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A new twist on pet food...
Some of Freymann's doggie creations are much better than others, but this entire book is filled with very creative food sculptures of man's best friend. I showed the book to my friend's little boy and he was completely creeped out by it, so I don't think this is a book that should be given to very young children. Adults who have a whimsical sense of humor will definitely enjoy it (and you'll never look at a banana the same way after reading this book!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing - every dog lover should have this book!
This is the cutest book ever! I just received it for my birthday. I brought it in to my work and showed a few co-workers; everyone wanted to know where I got it. It just makes you smile every time you flip through the pages. Very original. A must have for young and old alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Doggone Good.....
Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers are playing with their food again, and you'll never look at fruits and vegetables in quite the same way. After great success with How Are You Peeling, One Lonely Sea Horse, and Gus and Button, Elffers and Freymann have moved on to the dog house with a kennel full of edible surprises. Each bright and fun-filled page features doggy phrases and expressions... dog tired, let sleeping dogs lie, puppy love, doggy bag, dog eat dog, dog tag... accompanied by creatively constructed
