Book Description

Logan Moore hates everyone. The father who abandoned him. The stepfather who wants to control him. Kids who get in his face. Everyone. Except Jack. A mangy mutt that nobody wants. Except Logan. He doesn’t care that Jack has already bitten three workers at the animal shelter or that she’s ugly. She’s the only one who doesn’t want anything from him and that’s enough for Logan.
But Jack is in terrible danger. A mysterious disease is sweeping across the country, turning dogs into vicious, raging predators. Jack isn’t infected, but that won’t keep her safe. People are shooting dogs on sight, and asking questions later. Logan’s own parents want to hand Jack over to the authorities. Now Logan and Jack are on the run. There’s nowhere they can turn and no one they
can trust.
Except each other.

4-0 out of 5 stars The last dog on earth
"Jack had never known such a terror. It overshadowed even her pain and thirst and hunger. Night had long since fallen, and the boy was still gone. He'd abandoned her. He'd trapped her by tying her to this tree. She howled and howled for him, but he would not come. She chewed on the rope, trying to free herself, but the rope was too strong for her teeth. She whippedit around in her jaw, growling in frustration.Finnally she spat it out."

Logan Moore hates everything and everyone. His father who abandoned him when he was little, his stepfather Robert, who wants to control him, and all of the neighbors. When he is allowed to get a dog, he gets Jack,a mangy mutt who nobody wants except Logan. There is a dog disease that is spreading and Jack is in danger. The disease is said to make dogs attack people. Many people will shoot any dog they find because of the disease. Logan has no choice but to run away to save Jack. Will he save her?

This book reccomended for boys girls ages 9-12. It is a good story to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Dog On Earth
The name of this book is The L ast Dog On Earth, the author Danial Ehrenhaft. When I first read the title I thought it would be good because there are so many dogs. It also took place in Redmont Contry Oregon, present day.

This book an action/adventure book. The main characters are Logon and Logons dog Jack. A desiase breaks out and jack is in danger because the desiase is contagous to dogs and he has more to worry about because everyone is starting to shoot dogs on sight and not even ask if they were not desiased. Logons knows Jack's not desiased so they are on the run with no one to trust but eachother.

I thought that this was a good book because the whole book yuo just want to know if they kill the dog or not. I would recommend this book to anyone but if you are a big dog lover it does get kind of gorey and sad when the dogs die. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ginger Pye (great book)
This great book is about a boy named Jerry and his sister Rachel who wants to buy a dog. There also is another person who wants to buy the same dog. The dog cost $1.They find the money just in time before the another person buys it.That night though, they hear foot-steps behind them. They see the person that night all they see is a yellow hat.The hat never bothers them again, until Thanksgiving day it stills the dog they think. You have to read the book to see who stole their dog named Ginger ,and if Ginger ever comes back.Book by Eleanor Estes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ginger Pye
I think this book is very good because every time a new chapter starts, a mystery begins which leaves the reader in suspense. The plot is about a dog that is really intelligent and someone wants to steal the dog. The person who stole it was Wally Bullwinkle. I think the author describes the dog really good. For example, the dog picks up the pencil and gives it to Jerry Pye during school. The author keeps on describing the dog, which shows that he is very intelligent. I really recommend this book because it is easy to read and it has a lot of adventure in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ginger Pye
Jerry Pye wanted a dog to keep, and not to lose, so he got Ginger and taught him new tricks. Later in the book someone steals Ginger, and Jerry and his little sister can not find Ginger at all. Later strange things happen to them like they remember that the person who stole Ginger had a yellow hat on and later they see Jerry's friend wearing what looked like the same hat. This book is charactor driven because the charactors feelings change throught out the book. For example, Jerry feels great when he gets Ginger, but feels really sad when Ginger gets stolen. There are also many charactors that you get to know. After awhile you know evaryone in the story and you don't want to put the book down. This story is fun and exciting in the beginning, but in the middle it gets sad because Ginger gets stolen and all the Pyes are sad that Ginger wont be home for Christmas. After awhile things start to turn around at the Pyes house.

3-0 out of 5 stars well written, but the children over-look LOTS of clues...
This book is mostly about a brother and a sister whose dog disappears, while still a puppy. They spend most of the book wondering who took their dog and looking for their dog.

I had a hard time with the clues that they over-looked, as they were supposed to be intelligent children!

Other than that, it was an enjoyable read. There is a tiny amount of religion in the book, and the little girl prays to god for the dog to come home. Going to church is viewed positively by the author. As an agnostic, it bothered me a little. Just a little.

I read the book aloud to my 7 and 10 and they both enjoyed the story much more than I did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ginger Pye
Ginger Pye is the story of two siblings, Jerry and Rachel Pye, and their very intelligent dog, Ginger. Jerry wants to study rocks when he grows up and Rachael wants to study birds like her father. The children are very inquisitive and worry about things constantly. This book is a suspenseful mystery. The mystery begins when Ginger is stolen. The children think that an unsavory character in a yellow hat stole him; they search all over town for their beloved puppy.
This book is witty and funny. The children ask strange things throughout the novel like whether New York or Boston is more important. I think this book would be great for any child; it kept my attention. This is definitely a book that I will read again. ... Read more

For kids who can't get enough of television's Blue'sClues, this storybook with 63 stickers should help tide them over until the next episode. In this colorful paperback, the irrepressible Blue is off tothe farm with her earnest pal Steve, who asks readers to help identifyanimal tracks, figure out what kinds of animals belong on the farm, and decipher what Blue's favorite animal is by the clues left throughoutthe book. The illustrations consist of color-drenched, Teletubbies-style panoramas, superimposed withAstroturf, paper cutouts, clay figures, and what appears to be lettuce. The text is straight out of a scriptdesigned to get kids excited about sleuthing: "I was wondering," Steve asks, eyebrows skyward, "do you know what all these animals like to eat? Youdo? Will you get the animals their lunch? Great!" Your kids will hardlynotice this isn't TV! (Ages 3 to 6) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging and fun
My three year old nephew just got this book and loves it. He examines each page carefully and shouts "a clue! a clue!" whenever he sees the trademark blue paw print. He also informed me that he likes "that guy" meaning Steve, the genial young TV host. A cute book with lots of colorful stickers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Fun Fun
Our daughter spends many hours reading and re-reading this book and interacting with Blue. It comes out for reading especially when Blue's on tv and she points at the book and tv and has really developed her learning and memory retention and recollection. The whole Blue's videos and books are a must and in association with parental teaching your child will improve greatly. Where was Blue many years ago for our other children. One of the best learning shows around. Our daughter is two years old and now has a great imagination and play skills, which, thanks to Blue and Steve, is improving each and everyday of Blues Clues. Buy this book, plenty of fun for your kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son was intranced. It was a great book.
My son just loves Blues Clues. He has learned all the farm sounds from this book. I highly recommend it. My son is 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars my 4 year old's favorite book
This is my daughter's favorite book. It comes with 2 pages of stickers which go into the book. We had to work together to put the stickers in place and it was like doing a puzzle. Now it is HER book and she has changed around some of the stickers to make it even more hers.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was a fun way to learn about the animals on a farm.
It is one of the most fun ways for preschoolers to learn about both kinds of animals on a farm. Steve makes learning fun and exciting. The interaction of reality and make-believe is really refreshing. Keep up the good work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the little one, great for Mom and Dad
This was one of my son's first favorite books. He would listen to me read it as many times as I was willing, and because of Wegman's non-cutesy approach, that was many times indeed. Although the dog-formed letters aren't as clear as text, they don't need to be - there are many other instances of the letters on each page, and hearing them is as important as seeing them. Overall, a great experience in enjoying reading for parent and child alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new approach to the alphabet
This book made me wish learning the a-b-c's were this much fun back in my own childhood. The photos are amazingly original and your kids will truly enjoy coming back to their letter lessons with Wegman's adorable dogs. A very fresh approach to teaching! NOTE: check out Wegman's fairy tales featuring his prize dogs too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous for children AND adults
My 5 year old son has this book memorized. He laughs everytime he reads it. It has also been very helpful in teaching him the alphabet. It is an especially fun book for us since our pet is a Weimeraner.

5-0 out of 5 stars As much for grown ups as for children
Funny with a different sense of humor. Characters become quickly familiar. My two-year old's favorite (and I don't even like dogs!).

2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult for young children to visualize the letters
My daughter loves dogs so I thought she could learn the alphabet and enjoy the pictures of the dogs. Well, she loved the pictures of the dogs, but the letters were very difficult for her to visualize. This is not a book to help with the alphabet as much as it is for the visual creativity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love that Carl!
I'm a mission to purchase all the Carl books. I think it's a great way to show children how wonderful animals and pets can be. I especially like the board book format. It will allow my baby to enjoy it for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Birthday "trouble" keeps life in perspective...
All of the Carl books are thoughtful and creative, though this one is my favorite so far. I love making up the words for each of the books. The format definitely encourages analysis and discussion in a fun way. Little ones must look carefully and closely at each picture and think about how they choose to interpret the events. This book would make a timely birthday gift as well.

The basic premise is that "Mom" sends Carl and the baby girl (now a toddler) next door for their naps so that she can prepare for Carl's surprise birthday party. Of course, mischievous Carl and the baby sneak back and get into everything before the party.

This story is full of sweet little details (Carl receives a toy sized Rottweiler which they can't seem to get rewrapped quite right. Carl takes a bite out the cake and disguises it with a carefully placed flower. Somehow, all the toys that Mom picked up end up back out and under the party table....what Mom can't relate to that one!)

But most of all, I appreciate the free spirited theme that underpins these books. For me, they are a reminder that all of the details that seem so critical are really just a means to a bigger end. In the end, it's the spirit and joy of childhood that is important, a spirit that Carl and that little girl epitomize without saying a single word.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous!
If I had to choose a favorite Carl book (they're all favorites!), this would be it. The story line is so clever, and the whole book is so funny!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent visual of the love of a child and her devoted dog
This book is art with simplistic text at its finest. My daughter fell in love with "Carl". Heck, we all did. Great choice!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book for the dog loving preschooler.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's FAVORITE!
My two-month-old daughter got this book for Christmas. I thought she was too young for it. Boy, was I wrong! It is her absolute favorite!! Now at nine months old, she is lifting all the flaps and turning the pages. She gets so excited when I open this book. I cannot recommend it enough. The pictures are bright, the words repetitious, and the flaps sturdy -- a perfect combination for babies and toddlers! From now on, this is the book I am going to buy whenever I need to buy a baby or toddler gift. No one will be disappointed with Where's Spot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spot Rules!
This is a great book for preschoolers. My son, who's 3, loves lifting the flaps and knows most of the books by heart. The bright colors and simple language keep younger children interested to the very end. I highly recommend this and all of Eric Hill's other Spot books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's Spot? ***VIDEO***
I am confused looking at the reviews here. They are all for the Spot book. The book is very good too, but the video (here on this page) is also great. I have it for my niece and also for my daughter, and am buying another copy for a baby gift for someone.

This video is great for a baby's first cartoon/TV to watch. It is not too "busy" (or too long) for babies like other cartoons can be. I noticed my daughter *really* watching it and smiling and laughing at it around four months old. And she has enjoyed it ever since (and is now 3). It's cute and simple - perfect for babies and toddlers.

With my daughter interested in Spot, it gave me time to do some dishes or read the day's mail - uninterupted! I highly recommend *ALL* the Spot videos (although the longer ones, like the Christmas one, my daugter didn't get into as much until she was about two). "Where's Spot" and "Spot at the Farm" are her favorites. And she enjoys the books too.

Also - I recommend Kipper the Dog videos too. They are also the same simple shapes/characters and sceneries and stories, just like Spot. And Maisy Mouse videos and books. I never see any babies and toddlers who don't like Spot, Kipper, and Maisy. The Baby Mozart videos are also excellent. Kids are drawn to them. None of the above are wastes of money - and they enjoy them from babyhood into toddlerhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Fun for Little Ones
This sturdy little book has gotten much use at our house. It became my daughter's favorite "lift-the-flap" book. The drawing style and gentle story engage children to participate in the search for little Spot the dog. Perfect for 1-3 year olds. All of Eric Hill's Spot Books are cool but this one is a real favorite. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars DECEMBER #4
I read the book wheres spot because it is a great picture book for little kids. The kids like this book because the pictures interest them and they cant wait to see whats on the next page. They like to pull the pop out thing on their own because they are so interested in it. I think it helps kids with their imagination and their senses.I enjoyed reading this book again because it reminds me of going to the kolb library when I was little and in elementary we all use to want to rent this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DELIGHTFUL AND BENEFICIAL
There is nothing cuter than a furry animal - in this case, dogs. These adorable mutts with their exaggerated angles accompany the letters of the alphabet. A lab comes with the letter C, a terrier is down with the letter D, a furry black and white Vroom's to the letter V, and a hot dog shows his tail for the letter T.

The Dog from Arf! Arf! to Zzzzzz is delightful and beneficial. Using dogs and positioning them to represent the letters of the alphabet is a terrific idea. Seeing actions that represent the word of the letter is fun, and it helps kids retain the alphabet, as well as improve their memory skills. If owning the real thing (a pup) is not possible, this is next best thing for your little one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wag the dog
Dog lovers will love this alphabet book. Each page has a close up of some breed of puppy and a dog related word. For example, F shows a beagle pup with a stick in his mouth and the word "Fetch!" and W has a Cavalier King Charles spaniel showing off his tail and the words "Wag, wag, wag". The puppies are all beautifully photographed with a white background and many are shown from interesting or funny angles. At the end of the book is a page that tells what breed of dog is shown with each letter. ... Read more

Book Description

The tale of the ill-fated British luxury liner Titanic has been etched in people's minds through books, documentaries and major motion pictures about the tragedy. But, she was not the only passenger ship to be eaten up by the dangerous North Atlantic waters off the shores of Newfoundland in the early 1900s.

In 1919, just before Christmas, the S.S. Ethie departs Port Saunders, Newfoundland, for St. John's Harbor with 92 passengers and crew, all eager to be reunited with family for the holidays. After several difficult days at sea, a violent winter storm casts the coastal steamer Ethie onto rocks one-half mile off the jagged cliffs of northwest Newfoundland. Guided by his fisherman master, and following his own instincts, Skipper, a hardworking and courageous Newfoundland dog, braves the icy, dangerous waters to carry a lifeline from the sinking ship to shore. A seat is rigged to this cable, which carries each person onboard to safety. All 92 passengers and crew were saved from probable death in the icy Atlantic waters by the actions of this brave dog.

In this minute-by-minute fictionalized account of the S.S. Ethie's dramatic voyage, the author vividly brings the adventure to life, showing the spirit of survival amongst the passengers and crew, as well as the strength and determination of a poor fishing family and their courageous dog to save those 92 souls. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for Children and Adults
Hilary Hyland has done an incredible job of researching and then fictionalizing this incredible story of a shipwreck of the coast of Newfoundland in a blizzard during December 1919. Her depication of life on the island, as well as the loving relationship between a girl and her dog, offer readers two good reasons to read this book. Hyland tells the tale of Colleen and her dog, Skipper, while drawing the parallel story of a poor Irish boy, Patrick, who works on the SS Ethie. I think many young boys and girls will be able to put themselves in the place of Colleen and Patrick and live this harrowing adventure to the fullest. Since there is a happy ending for everyone, the story can be read by younger children (seven or eight) without fear of nightmares.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for All Ages
Hilary Hyland's The Wreck of the Ethie is a dramatic account of a dog's heroism during a sea disaster. As a schoolteacher, I can attest to the fact that children love this book. The principal characters in the book are two pre-teens and a Newfoundland dog named Skipper. The book is based on a true story about the shipwreck of the Ethie in 1919. Ms. Hyland has included the results of her meticulous research to provide an educational "read" for kids of all ages. The fast-paced story kept this adult reading page after page without respite. The illustrations help "visual" readers to connect as the story unfolds with descriptive imagery. A section at the end of the book (Author's Note) answers common questions posed by school children regarding the dog and the story. In addition, a glossary of nautical terms is included.
Ms. Hyland visits schools and provides a slide presentation showing pictures and information gathered during her research for the book. She tells children about the process of researching and writing historical fiction. She provides an interactive question and answer environment for students to discuss her book and visit with her own Newwfoundland dog, Cubby, who accompanies her on each and every visit! This book is a great choice for adults or children. Don't miss this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book
If you like thrilling shipwreck stories, heartwarming dog stories and courageous, resourceful heroes and heroines...this is the book for you. It is perfect for the entire family and a must for every family's library. Warning...you'll want to buy a Newfoundland dog after reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Wreck of the Ethie
The Wreck of the Ethie by Hilary Hyland is based on a true story that took place off the coast of Newfoundland. It is a dramatic story about a young boy named Patrick who goes to work on the S.S. Ethie, a cargo/passenger ship. The Ethie is on the northeast end of the island leaving from Bonne Bay and it is going through the Gulf of St. Lawerence to St.John's Harbor. On the way the ship gets stuck in the middle of the worst blizzard to ever hit the coast of Newfoundland. The gales are so bad it makes the Ethie go off-course and the ship gets beached on Martin's Point. At the same time, Colleen is living in Martin's Point with her dog Skipper. He is a one hundred and fifty pound black Newfounland dog. While gathering wood Skipper and Colleen hear the passengers on the Ethie yelling for help. Skipper risks his life, rushing into the water and the ferocious waves. Will this dog be the hero and save all of the ninety-two passengers? The book gets a four star rating because it is well written and a thrilling true story about a heroic dog.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOULD MAKE A TERRIFIC MOVIE
A whirlwind of a book! Both my son & daughter thoroughly enjoyed this exciting book based on a shipwreck where the passengers were saved by a heroic Newfoundland dog. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat to see what happens. My children liked the actual pictures of the ship, lighthouse and mailbag that the baby was saved in. We all fell in love with Skipper, the Newfoundland dog. A fantastic read for the entire family. ... Read more

Any kids who love dogs will like this book. It's so very charming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretzel - What an endearing book!
This is such a charming tale about a male dachshund named Pretzel trying to win the affections of his lady-friend. He tries all kinds of antics to woo her and impress her, but it isn't until he rescues her from a deep hole that he truly wins her heart. A must for every child! I still love to read it and I'm 26!

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Curious George by a loooong shot!
This was my favorite book as a child, although I discovered in later years that my parents had changed his girlfriend's name to Gretchen when reading it aloud since my name is Greta! I'd recommend this to anyone since it shows kids it's okay to be different and problems can be overcome with patience. I've been searching for this for years and am thrilled to finally own it. When I got my dachshund I immediately named him after this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for dachshund lovers!
I have looked and looked for this book because it was out of print for some time. I have an old paperback copy, but it is getting pretty worn. I was delighted to find I could order it here, and in hardback no less! This is one of my favorite books!

4-0 out of 5 stars As Much Fun Now As When I was a Kid
I grew up with this book and never knew of the others in the series. Seeing as my daughter loves dogs I had to buy this when I saw it in this new edition.

An opera singer has moved into the house next to Harry's. The singer practices all day long, singing loud and high. Harry does not like this sound. Harry tries a number of ways to get her to stop. These do not please his family. But finally, a good way is found and everyone is happy.

As a parent, one of the things I like about this book is that it is clear that Harry is not being good when he howls, leads cows or a marching band, or other tricks. Although we want Harry to succeed, we also want it to be in the right and good way. This book knows the difference.

I loved this book as a kid and I still do. My daughter loves it (hopefully my son will too).

4-0 out of 5 stars harry and the lady next door
I like Harry and the lady Next Door because Harry doesnt like her sining. I also like this book because Harry brings all these animals. home and the lady sings louder than them. These are reasons why you should read these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Harry the Wonder Dog!
Harry goes to desperate lengths to silence the lady next door - her singing is too high and loud. He howls, bits piano legs, steals music, chases cows and bands, but finally succeeds, to everyones' relief. Even the lady next door is happy.

I read this as a child, as did my brothers. This is the first story that my 5 year old has shown an interest in reading by himself. Thanks Harry! ... Read more

Book Description

This is the remarkable story of a dog which was cruelly abused.Written in 1893, Beautiful Joe was the first book to sell 1,000,000 copies in Canada, which it did before 1900. The book is based on a true story which took place in Meaford Ontario, although the author relocated the story to Maine because she thought it would sell better. There is now a Beautiful Joe Heritage Society, raising funds to establish the Beautiful Joe Canine Museum in Meaford.

This edition includes an essay describing the context of Beautiful Joe, written by Professor Elizabeth Waterston. It suggests that cruelty to animals was explored in literature as a precursor to cruelty to people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite childhood book!
This is a charming, heartwarming story by Beautiful Joe himself. He tells of the cruel mistreatment by his first owner, Mr. Jenkins, and how he was rescued and came to live with the Morris's - the most loving family on earth! His adventures with the other animals in the Morris family will make you laugh and his love for Miss Laura will warm your heart! Some might say this book is just propaganda for the American Humane Society, but I am loving it all over again 45 years after I first read it! Treat yourself

4-0 out of 5 stars A story that definitely tugs at your heart strings
This story was read to me when I was a little girl. I have read it to my girls and they in turn have read it themselves. Beautiful Joe makes a person think about what their actions may do to everyone and everything around them. It gave my daughters an appreciation for animals that I could never do. This book was hard to put down!

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book - not just for children!
I had never heard of this book or read it as a child. I found a copy of the 1930 hardback version in an antique shop in the midwest last summer and purchased it just because the cover illustration looked strikingly like a dog my husband and I had recently adopted from a shelter. When I read the book, I was captivated and astonished. You see, my dog (a lovely fawn-colored pit bull) was rescued after having her ears crudely chopped off and burned. She's been a member of our family for nearly two years, and is an obedient, loving companion. The story told from the perspective of the dog reinforces to me that animals are feeling, thinking creatures, put on this earth for humans to care for and give a voice to. I've since become a great advocate for the plight of the American Pit Bull Terrier, which used to be the symbol of American with its courage, loyalty, and tenacity. Unfortunately in this day and age, irresponsible and unfeeling people have tarnished their image greatly by trying to turn them into guard dogs (which they are not) and reaping profits from fighting them. Then, they are usually discarded. Children would do well to read this book to help them learn about kindness to all creatures; adults would enjoy it as well. Because of this book, the name on our dog's AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certificate and UKC LP registration proudly reads, "Ostroms' Beautiful Barley." I'm looking forward to reading the sequel and happy to have found, through these reviews, where the "real" Beautiful Joe lived and is buried.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, the dog has a point of view!
This book is a period piece, over 100 years old but more timely now, perhaps, than when it was first published. It is written "first person" from the dog's point of view, to show that animals do indeed feel pain and happiness, physical and emotional, and to draw you into an empathic relationship with Joe. We have not come very far in the last 100 years, I'm afraid. People are still fighting their pit bulls when they could be having other kinds of competitions with them, they are still beating and abusing, they are still dumping their dogs at shelters or worse simply because they are tired of them or don't want to deal with them. This book is still as much needed as it was in the late 1800's when people were beating tired horses to make them go. If you are concentrating on helping people rather than animals, remember that most serial killers start with animal cruelty and work up to killing people. I think everyone needs to read this at least once when they are young. Who knows...?

5-0 out of 5 stars A true story you'll cherish
This is a true story of the mistreatment of a dog who ultimately ends up very happy. It was written over 100 years ago and is still timely. It is a book meant for children yet also for adults. It is a book that you will hold dear to your heart, and for you pet lovers, a treasure indeed. I recommend it most highly. I would also recommend it being read in schools. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, but Fun
I gave this book to my baby when he was about a month old. Although his vision wasn't very developed, he liked to rub the soft puppy on the front of the book.I read him each page (there's only one to three words per page) and pointed out what the puppy was doing. The wording is very simple, and there are only six pages in the book, but that works for young infants with tiny attention spans.

Now that my son is 11 months old, he likes to play with this book on his own.He turns each page and looks at the pictures, and then he goes through it all over again. The nice thing is, I can put it at the foot of his crib when he goes to sleep at night, and when he wakes up in the morning, he has something soft and safe to play with. This occupies him for a few minutes so that I can sleep in just a little bit longer. When he's finished looking at his book each morning, he starts calling for me and I know it's time to get up and go greet him.I just think that "reading" a book is a great way for a baby to start off his day.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too small to choke on, too large to fit in my wallet
I was a tad disappointed by the tacked-on, hackish ending to this book, but I have to admit that the preceeding five pages really got my pulse racing.Such action!Such adventure! Not to mention the baby-soft feel of the cover.Predictable ending, but overall a fine story.
I'm hoping Ben Affleck will be tapped to play the lead in any up-coming movie version. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love This Book
The illustrations in this book are hilarious, The text is perfect for children that are just starting to read.Simple one syllable words with two to three words per page. But the best part of this book is the illustrations, I just love them. The dog spends the entire book hot and trying to cool off. Every attempt he makes fails until the very end. You find your yourself rooting for the dog. This is one of my son't favorite books, he wants to read it every night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Story
I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher and I introduced this story to my class on the first day of school after we get in from the playground. They love it and relate to the hot little dog in the story.

This book is ideal for a child and an adult to sit and read together. It has predictable and easy words and the kids have fun watching the dog do anything to cool off on a hot day.

When I read it to the class, they enjoy it so much they take it from storytime and read it themselves. This is the kind of book that enspirers young people to have a love for reading. They realize that reading is fun and can be easy too. This book was favorite from the first day.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Hot Dog" Rates #1 in my Classroom!
I have begun to use these Road to Reading books in my resource classroom and the students love them. They especially loved Hot Dog. Many of the words are on the state mandated word lists for K-2. I bought this book for my 3 year old, as he loves the "duck" books by Jez. He loves this book as well, and it is my personal favorite. I love the message in the book, and the rhymes are easy to read and follow. Of Jez's books, this is the best. This is a book that parents will enjoy reading and children love to hear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story and Illustrations
My 16 month old LOVES this book and I don't mind a bit reading it several times per day. The text is simple and originally rhyming, the illustrations are very cute. Sid is the star of this heartwarming tale that fills the imagination of both adult and child. I look hard for children's books that I enjoy reading and my son enjoys hearing and looking at the illustrations and this one fit's the bill perfectly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Marcus' review on Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night
I liked this book because it's about camping and I like camping. The fish had a great picture. Henry's mother was setting up the camp and the really funny part was when Mudge unpacked a ham sandwich and it looked like a bunch of leaves. His dad brought his guitar and a smile on his face because he was happy to be camping. It was funny when Henry and Mudge thought that there were bears so they were hugging each other. I thought it was a good book because in the end Mudge does something really funny but you have to read the book to find out what it is.
