4-0 out of 5 stars Fan-freakin'-tastic
When you're dealing with as big a star as author Cynthia Rylant, you can look back on the artist's early projects and see the blooming seeds of greatness that established themselves early on. As an author, Rylant has penned books that speak to the quiet still voice in all of us. Her, "When I Was Young In the Mountains" is a delicate return to the Appalachia of her youth. More recently her, "God Went to Beauty School" gives us a book that is both succinct and grandiose. With these works (and many others) in mind I decided to take a gander at her early reader series starring the irascible Henry and his sweet natured St. Bernard (or so I assume him to be) Mudge.

In this, the second book in the "Henry and Mudge" series, we follow our intrepid duo through three bite sized adventures. In "Snow Glory", it's Spring and Henry has fallen head over heels in love with a small blue flower that has bloomed. Though his mother tells him not to pick it, Henry is entranced by the plant and confesses this love to his dog. Unfortunately, Mudge listens intently to Henry and then proceeds to devour the plant. Initially angry, Henry understands that it is necessary to forgive his pet and the two continue companionably. In the second tale, "Puddle Trouble", Henry forgets to inform his father that he and Mudge are going puddle jumping in the wet April weather. When his pop comes looking for the two, his intentions are not as dire as they may first appear. Finally, the third tale in this collection, "The Kittens", is for me the best written of the bunch. The cat who lives next door to Henry and Mudge has kittens, and the two friends have a great deal of fun watching the sweet little balls of fur play. The neighbors like to put the kittens in a box on the porch in the sun to give the mama cat some time to rest. Mudge is greatly attached to the little creatures, and when he suspects that they are threatened, he retaliates in a fashion unseen until now in the series.

Each story in this collection deals with a serious topic, lightly told and playfully presented. The first is about forgiving people for being themselves. The second informs people to act responsibly and, when appropriate, irresponsibly too. The third, my personal favorite, is about finding hidden reserves of strength. Mudge is such a lovable clumsy fellow that for most of the book he's featured as a happy-to-lucky kind of pup. When he sees something he loves threatened, however, he reacts with a great deal of self-possession. Accompanying Rylant's sly tales are Sucie Stevenson's illustrations. Admittedly, I can take or leave these pics. They're certainly lighthearted and fun and they get the story across without difficulty. Just the same, it might have been nice to give these tales a little more depth or feeling. So thought I until I saw the last illustration. After the kittens have been threatened and a potentially dangerous dog has left the premises there is an excellent shot of Mudge with his paws protectively around the sides of the kittens' box. His head is down but he looks completely alert and ready, in case of further trouble. It's an image that stays with you.

Good clean fun sums up the "Henry and Mudge" series fairly well. But what separates these books from other series like "Junie B. Jones" or "Cam Jansen" is their moral core. Rylant has given these books some heart and a little soul. In a series, this is extraordinary. For an author of Rylant's skill, however, it's just to be expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homework Assignment
I like this book because I like the stories. It was fun to see if the kittens are going to get in trouble by the new dog or not, and if Henry and Mudge were going to get into trouble by their dad. I like that Henry and Mudge ae such good friends, and that they understand each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Springtime fun with boy and dog
Henry and his big dog Mudge are back in this wonderful 2nd addition to the ever-growing series. This time, spring has come, bringing with it spring flowers, giant puddles and new births.

Books in this series are excellent choices for emergent or beginning readers. The sentences are short and easy to read, and the illustrations practically tell the story by themselves. Like other Henry and Mudge books (H&M for short), this book is divided into chapters. In this case, each chapter represents a different story for our boy & dog team in springtime (in other H&M books the story is split up into chapters like regular books).

In the first book, H&M discover a beautiful flower that has sprung from the ground. That is, until Mudge eats it! In the second, the spring rains have made the world puddle-luscious and they're just perfect for jumping in (even for adults!!). In the final chapter, a neighborhood cat has her kittens, and Mudge acts as a kind of guardian/father to them when another neighborhood dog comes prowling around.

Henry & Mudge books are by far a favorite of both me the teacher and my students. They're about the simple happy pleasures of everyday that often we tend to overlook in the pursuit for the Next Big Thing To Do For Fun And Excitement. It isn't necessary to start with any one particular book, but once you start reading H&M, you'll want to keep reading them all!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge in Puddle Trouble
In their third adventure, Henry and his big dog Mudge explore the wonders of Springtime. Henry learns forgiveness when Mudge eats something special to him. Mudge saves the day when a new dog threatens the special kittens next door. However, parents and children alike will love the puddle trouble Henry and Mudge get into. Henry's father's reaction to the muddy mess of the duo will make you want to enjoy Spring with such childlike abandon. These books are sure winners. Though classified as easy readers, they appeal to all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OMG this is like the best book EVER! WHOO!
OMG I just absolutely loved this book! The author has very well-researched this book and I read it in 1 day it was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good! I recommend this to all animal and expedition lovers. Its extremely easy to understand, as I myself am only 20 years old. I just love it, love it, love it and you should read it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is the BEST!
This book is the best book I have ever read in my life. I have read The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. LEWIS, but you cannot compare it. This book made me cry at the end, ... partly because it was due for library tomrrow. I thought that this book is in depth, written well, and gives you a feeling you probably haven't felt before. I strongly reccomend it for any young reader. Besides Seaman, my favorite character would have to be the ever cheerful George Shannon. Next would have to be John Colter. He showed his bravery at the right times, and he as was calm and levelheaded as Shannon in most emergencies. Then come Sacagawea, the only girl on the expedition. She turned out to be one of the most important women in history because she was so peaceful and quiet on the outside, yet was energetic and playful on the inside. This book describes all those characters very well. This book (as I said before) is the best book I have ever read, and perhaps ever will read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Look into the Lewis & Clark Expedition
Gail Langer Karwoski has done an excellent job of fictionalizing the Lewis & Clark adventure by drawing on details from their diaries. Using Lewis' dog, Seaman, as a focal point, she details the many dangers and perils faced by the explorer group while doing good character development of the protagonists. Sacagawea and York, a slave owned by Clark, are shown in their pivotal contributions (often ignored) to the expedition. My only criticism revolves around the portrayal of the various Native American groups encountered by Lewis & Clark. Because she has drawn on the diaries and their viewpoint, various tribes are depicted as either "noble savages" or "thieving Indians" and deeper cultural issues are not explored as to the traditions of these varied groups. Overall an excellent book, but perhaps best read with adult guidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meticulous attention to historic detail and background
Seaman: The Dog Who Explored The West With Lewis & Clark is a wonderfully written, very highly recommended historical novel. Young readers will thrill to the story of an epic American saga showcased through Lewis' brave and loyal dog Seaman, the first dog to cross the continent and open up the west for the fledgling country of America. Author Gail Karwoski has given meticulous attention to historic detail and background, always the hallmark of a superior historical novel. She combines this with an impressive gift for storytelling that will engage young readers from first page to last. One special and unique feature is the Q & A format for the "Author Notes" at the end of this remarkable work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seaman
If you like books about adventure and discovery this is the book for you! I enjoyed this book because of the fact that I have been on most of the rivers and most of the places that Lewis and Clark went to in this book. At the beginning of the book it explains that Captain Lewis and Captain Clark are being sent by President Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Purchase (at least the upper half) and to go to the other side of the continent. I was amazed by the fact that it took 10 shots or more to kill a grizzly bear but I won't tell you all the details. I don't want to spoil it for you. If you are a kid or adult. I would highly recommend reading this book. I read this book for a school assignment. ... Read more

Book Description

In fun, rhyming couplets and striking artwork, the Chapmans present hilarious pictures of what dogs might dream of being and doing. Chewing on bones? Sleeping all day? No, these dogs dream of dancing on stage, running for president, flying to the moon, going to school, and yes, eating steak in a diner while the people wait outside on the street. Most dogs have been denied these "people only" experiences...until now!

Thacher Hurd's wacky story and fabulously splashy illustrations, with witty nods to many famous artists, would dazzle any young reader. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wish there were more kid's books like this
I've read this to my six-year-old since he was a five-year-old - he doesn't get tired of it, and mercifully, neither do I. The idea of a hero who uses _painting_ instead of punches to win the day is so cool it makes me wish I'd written it.
Also, I take my son to the children's floor at Berkeley Main Library, where they have a kid's size version of the Brushmobile (you'll have to read the book to know what that it) that he's loved to 'ride in' even before we'd found the book. The day he no longer fits behind the palette, I think we'll both cry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Storytime Docent at the Museum of Fine Art Houston
I read stories to little kids at the museum here in Houston. We have many wonderful books the museum has provided for us, and I have had the pleasure of reading many beautiful and interesting books to the children who visit us. But, this book is my personal favorite, and the kids I read to have laughed and applauded Art Dog at every reading. I highly recommend this book. (Also look up Zoom City, which is by the same author. It is my 3yr old son's favorite book). But as for Art Dog: Great Story, and great illustrations. Bravo Arthur Dog and the Dogopolis Museum!

5-0 out of 5 stars Who is Art Dog?
By day, Arthur Dog, Dogopolis Museum of Art security guard, and lover of paintings by Vincent Van Dog, Pablo Poodle, Henri Muttisse, and Leonardo Dog Vinci. By night, Art Dog, masked grafitti artist painting the city in beautiful color. "No one knew who Art Dog really was... until one night at the museum." Yikes! Someone has stolen the Mona Woofa! After being falsely accused, Art Dog paints his way out of jail, lifts his nose in the air..."I can smell art a mile away," and saves the day in superhero fashion..... Thacher Hurd has authored an entertaining, wacky picture book that's sure to tickle the funny bones of young and old alike. His delightful, high-spirited text begs to be read aloud, and is full of terrific sound effects, wordplay, and dog puns. But it's his bold, bright, and splashy illustrations that really make this book stand out and sparkle. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Art Dog is a funny, engaging, rip-roarin' adventure you don't want to miss. "Who was Art Dog? Who was this painter in a Brushmobile, catcher of crooks, bringer of light to the Dogopolis night?" Only readers will know!

4-0 out of 5 stars Woofunderful book!
"Art Dog" is a wigglin' fun story book about Arthur Dog, the security guard at Dogopolis Museum of Art. He lives a secret life as a graffitti artist who finds himself being blamed for the stolen "Mona Woofa". However, he is able to paint his way out of...well, I can't give away the story here! (This detective dog sure is smarter than Scoobi Doo!)

The story is very short, quick, and barkingly fun. Not only will kids love it, but adults will love the depictions of Vicent Van Dog, Pablo Poodle, Henri Muttisse and others. It is dog-gone worth the few bucks for this book. This sure is a good book to sniff out.

Chewy Louie is one of the greatest pieces of literature I have ever read. It had a great story line and it kept the audience on the seat of their chairs while reading it. Chewy Louie is a must have book for people of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Childrens Book
I enjoyed reading the book Chewy Louie for a class assignment. I was surprised that a childrens book would be so humorous. The book was about a puppy that chewed everything he came across. I liked the funny touches hidden in the pictures. I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to read a funny childrens story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chewy Louie
"Chewy Louie" is one of the best children's stories I've ever read. Not only did it keep my attention, I found myself laughing as I read the book. When the young boy gets a puppy, he soon finds out what puppies can do-chew. And chew, chew, chew, Louie does. He chews everything in sight, including furniture, cars, and visitors. You and your child will laugh out loud at the hilarious pictures! This book is just the thing when you're looking for a good laugh.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chewy Louie Review
Chewy Louie is a bookby Howie Schneider. This is a book for children, I think it is about changes as you grow up. This is about a dog that eats everything and chews on everything. One day the little boy was playing fetch with Louie and usually he doesn't bring the sticks back, but today he did. Chewy Louie finally grew up and didn't chew on everything anymore. He was getting older and bigger every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Humorous Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving this book!
I'm 30 years old, and BEG my nieces to let me read this to them over and over! I'm not only a dog lover, but I also appreciate the hysterical humor and illustrations. This book will please kids and adults alike! (Favorite line: "Martha, SHUT UP!" (It's funny when you read it!)

5-0 out of 5 stars I've always wanted to talk to my pets
We love this book- what child wouldn't? Martha is a great character; someone I'd love even as a human or an ordinary dog, but as a talking dog, she's great! She has sufficient depth that I'm not left feeling that something important has been left out. The illustrations are wonderful as well- portly Martha ordering lots of meat from the butcher- very nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Speak, girl!
Warning: By reading this book to your children you may be inadvertently encouraging them to force-feed their puppies alphabet soup. Creating a book that is as much comic strip as it is enjoyable picture book, Susan Meddaugh's enjoyable 1992 creation follows the adventures and misadventures of Martha the talking pup. After being fed a bowl of delicious alphabet soup, Martha, the family pet, begins talking in complete grammatically correct sentences. For the family, this new occurrence is initially a boon. Martha is able to explain all kinds of doggish mysteries, hitherto unexplained to humans. She answers the door to the pizza delivery girl, much to family's amusement. She amazes both family and friends. Unfortunately, there are downsides to owning a talking dog. Martha, once she learns how to dial the phone, is prone to ordering large quantities of barbecue beef. She doesn't understand such social niceties as not commenting on someone's appearance loudly in pubic (especially if that someone is fat). And she talks constantly about nothing at all. When the family finally proclaims that Martha's talking is too much, the humbled doggie falls into a deep depression and refuses to devour anymore alphabet soup. Fortunately the appearance of a nasty burglar in the home gives Martha the opportunity to save the day and reinstate herself as the family's favorite talking dog.

The book's an original, no question. Martha's constant chatter appears as speech balloons over her head. If you get this edition in hardback, I highly recommend that you flip to the author's photo on the back inside cover to see a picture of a dog that looks very much as if it might have been the inspiration for Martha's cuddly form. The illustrations are sweet and inticing and Martha says everything you'd expect a dog to say (if neutered). The double page spread of her blowing away the family with an incredibly long speech is particularly impressive. I suspect that if you were to read this book to your little one they would insist that you read every single word that pops out of Martha's mouth. All things considered, this might take some time so prepare to set aside some 20 minutes for a full and unabridged reading of the delightful "Martha Speaks". As for the use of the term, "shut up", (which the family yells at Martha when they canst takes it no more) this is left entirely up to the reader's discretion. If you live in a home where the phrase is considered impolite, you may wish to read it aloud from the book in a silly way, or simply disguise it as the less controversial "Be Quiet" (which I do not, personally, endorse). If this phrase is not considered impolite in your home, let rip and let go.

This is altogether a fine book and an amusing story. This is an excellent choice for those children interested in the intricacies of canine yabbering.

2-0 out of 5 stars Martha Speaks to Adults
The story of Martha Dog's development into speaking family member amused my 5-year-old daughter, but the hand-written words emanating from Martha's mouth confused her. No wonder: they're not designed for the same audience. The story was created for young readers, while Martha's monologues and asides are intended for adults.

2-0 out of 5 stars Martha Speaks and so does her family
I purchased this book because my first graders LOVE dog stories and I was impressed by the awards listed. It is a fun and enjoyable story which is unfortunately deemed inappropriate for classroom use because of the huge SHUT UP page half way through the book. What a shame! In a read aloud situation, you can't really change the words when they take up an entire page. What was this author thinking????????????????? You may want to move on to Martha Calling instead. ... "Puppies big and puppies small, puppies short and puppies tall." More than 125 adorable pups frolick through the pages of this jaunty, rhyming celebration of puppiness. This is a perfect book to read aloud to a young dog lover-kids can point out their favorite pups and also follow the journey of one particular pooch from snuggling newborn to proud parent of his own litter. Dachshunds, shepherds, Dalmatians, collies, poodles, terriers, hounds, and ever-popular mutts are "cuddling, kissing, napping puppies, yowling, howling, yapping puppies." What could be cuter? AUTHOR BIO: In addition to being the author of the best-selling Everywhere Babies, Susan Meyers raises champion show dogs in San Rafael, California. This is the second picture book for David Walker, a noted illustrator of gift cards and other stationery and gift items who lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Book Description

Having a dog in class is always a clue that it's going to be an interesting day, especially when the dog in question-and the one with all the answers-is the insatiable canine gourmand Pete, last seen munching everything from jellybeans to underwear on his way through the alphabet in What Pete Ate from A-Z.

Poppy Wise has mixed feelings about school and her teachers have mixed feelings about her dog, Pete. Pete wreaks havoc in math; causes chaos in science (Mrs. Magma has a meltdown when he swallows her microscope!); and is a star in art (Miss Crumple finds Pete colorful when he eats all the crayons). As Pete gets his fill of knowledge, he also serves as an impetus for learning rules are made to be broken and there is no end to learning. This new adventure is sure to be another "giggly meal for readers who relish ridiculousness, randomness, rambunctiousness and alliteration."-Time Out New York

5-0 out of 5 stars Don¿t Mess With the Big Dog (or the little dog either)
The Complete Adventures of Big Dog and Little Dog is 5 books in one! Simpler stories (think no Pilkey puns) than other Dav P. books, but just as much fun. Big Dog and Little Dog go for a muddy walk, are sprayed by a skunk, and rip up the sofa. The acrylic and India ink illustrations are straight forward, but clever. I especially like the font that Pilkey created for this book, which is appropriately called "Big Dog." (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Kids Love Big Dog and Little Dog!
This compilation of all the Big Dog and Little Dog stories is terrific! If you have children between the ages of 1 and 5 who like dogs, this is a sure-fire hit. There are few books that can hold the attention of both my 4 year old daughter and my 1 year old son, but Pilkey's book keeps both of them interested and laughing at the amusing and sweet antics of the two silly pets. The illustrations are adorable. The text is simple enough for toddlers to understand, but still interesting for pre-schoolers. My 4 year old is beginning to say the words along with me, which is good preparation for reading. The type-set is large enough that beginning readers could read this, so I intend to keep this book around for when my children start to read on their own. This compilation is a very good value, if you consider the price of buying the 5 Big Dog and Little Dog books separately. I highly recommend this as a holiday gift for any toddlers on your list. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book!!!!! Oh, yeah!
I loved this book because it was full of adventure! If you read it you will be truly thankful!!! It's about a girl, Mandy, who finds a dying sheepdog. She nurses it back to health and names her Tess but her parents won't let the dog stay after she's healed. It's their policy as vets. Mandy find's Tess a good home but soon there are attacks on the sheep she herds. Angry farmer's drive her off. I mean, she's a likely candidate, know one knows why this almost perfect, pure bread Border collie was abandoned. Could these attacks be the answer? The farmers are off to kill her when something happens...
You have to read to find out the ending, but it's really good! At city hall Mandy throws a sort of celebration with the pets of Wellford and their humans! I thought that was cool idea! The pictures are funny and vivid, and the style is truly that of Ben M. Baglio. That is why I rated it 5 stars!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK READ ALL OF THEM IN THE SERIES!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Biscuit Gets Distracted
In this book, The Girl With The Purple Sneakers wants to teach Biscuit how to fetch a ball. But learning is not always easy when the world is filled with fascinating things like bones and cats. But once Biscuit is ready to learn even a big mud puddle won't stand in his way.

A good book that shows it is easy to be distracted and that obstacles can be overcome. Told in the wonderful "Biscuit" style and with adorable illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Beginning Readers
This is a terrific new Biscuit book. My 7 year old daughter can read it with no problem. It is almost too easy for her. It is a wonderful book for the very beginning readers. My daughter and I enjoy the humor of Biscuit not wanting to listen and doing eveything except what he is told. Sounds just like a puppy! All kids who like dogs will enjoy this book! ... Read more

Book Description

Life with only the sea can be lonely. Just ask Pandora and Seabold. They've lived most of their lives with the sea -- Pandora in a lighthouse and Seabold on a boat -- and they're each quite used to being alone. Or they were.

But one day, the sea did something extraordinary: It brought Pandora and Seabold together! And even better, the sea gave them the ingredients for an adventure that neither of them had considered before-an adventure called "family." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars cynthia rylant fans!
We love all of Cynthia Rylant's books and series of books, and The Lighthouse Family series is our new favorite! We are anxious to read the next book as soon as it comes out so we can know what happens to Pandora the cat, Seabold the dog and their three little mice children. Rylant uses wonderful words in her books, painting a beautiful story of words. (the illustrations in this book are beautiful too!) This is for a little older readers than her Mr. Putter and Tabby, Henry and Mudge, Poppleton, or Little Whistle series, ALL of which I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! ... Read more

Book Description

From cold-nose wake-up to bedtime with a Little Dog-shaped lump under the covers, a day that a little girl spends with her Little Dog is recounted in thirty short, playful poems and enchanting watercolor illustrations. Little Dog protects the little girl from vacuum cleaners and beetles, chases cats, digs up flowers, and waits hopefully as kitchen preparations take place and as popcorn is eaten. The little girl, who loves Little Dog enough to "bake / birthday cookies with / liver powder," retrieves tennis balls, brings home a present from the pet store, and observes how little a wet Little Dog becomes at bath time. A perfect introduction to the pleasures of poetry, this beguiling volume belongs on every young dog lover's bookshelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Dog Poems & Little Dog and Duncan
I have read both of these Little Dog books to my first grade students and they enjoyed each and every poem very much!!! Many of my students bonded with the child and her dog and had lots of stories to tell and write about their own experiences with pets.
These are two of my favorite books to read to them when I talk about poems not having to rhyme to be poems. I wish Ms. George would write more books about Little Dog and his experiences!

5-0 out of 5 stars Endearing...
Kristine O'Connell George has written one of the most endearing books of the year....Every poem illuminates another incident in the busy life of Little Dog, and dog-owners are sure to recognize their own pets in him. June Otani's watercolors are as charming as the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Awwww!"
This book is a delight for young dog lovers and parents of young dog lovers. The poems are easy to read and charmingly illustrated with watercolors by June Otani. If you can read this one without one out-loud, 'Awwww!' you've got a heart made of stone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm, loving and funny!
My second graders just fell in love with this book. Viva Little Dog

5-0 out of 5 stars BIG fun!
LITTLE DOG PEOMS may be a little book to hold in your hand, but it's big with imagery, big with understanding of dog behavior and especially big on the fun and special relationship that a child and her dog share. George captures this spunky Little Dog in poems of suitable size. No wasted words here. The essence of each poem, like an enthusiastic puppy, leaps up in tight word pictures that take your breath away with their warmth and rightness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A multi layered gem of a book
I am reading this book out loud to my almost-5 year old. He is captivated by the slow, meticulously layered plot and character development. I am taking the time to write this review, because this might not be a book one would ordinarily think to use as a read alout to a child this young (he'll be five in 2 months)..and as a mom i look to these reviews to gather information about age appropriateness. In any case, it's a pleasure to read, and it's the kind of book that makes you stop and say WOW, how on earth did this writer come up with these detailed ideas??? The characters are all kind and charming, and their little quirks are celebrated. I found that one of the underlying messages of this book is kindness, patience, and love for nature, as well as respect for the family. The setting is somewhat dated - the 1950's, but as long as your child can understand the concept of things having been different long ago, (You'll be explaining "icebox" and a few terms like that) it's really quite an enriching experience. We are very much looking forward to reading other books by this author. Enjoy this charming, comforting read together...don't wait for your child to learn to read it for him or herself!

3-0 out of 5 stars A smart cat named Pink Pye
Pinky Pye is a cute, funny ,exciting, and questioning kind of book.My favorite part is when the Pyes find Pinky. Then find out that Pinky can type on Mr.Pyes type writer.I really liked
this book.Kathryn Arnold...>

5-0 out of 5 stars Pinky Pye
This story is about the Pyes (Rachael, her brother Jerry, Mama, Papa, Gracie, Uncle Benny, and Ginger) who go on vacation so Papa ,a famous ornithologist, can figure out what a puffin is doing there. His bad memory gets him in a lot of trouble very early on in the book. Little did he know he wouldn't get much work done due to an abandoned kitten left on their cabin's door step. Pinkey Pye they called her, who would do anything just so someone will say she's cute. Mama brought plenty of coats (even though it was 90 degrees outside) just in case they were walking along the beach and a snow storm arived and matches in case they got lost. Her motto is "Be Prepared." Uncle Benny is Mama's brother even though he is 5 years younger than Rachael and Jerry(Mama's children). He wonders how his crickets are vanishing one by one. He is on a never ending quest to stop sucking his thumb. Gracie is a grumpy old cat who feins boredom through out although she is very interested in a creature lurking in the shadows of the attic... Ginger is the clever dog, but feels a little left out when Pinky steps into the picture. Will her jelousy overcome her common sense? Filled with laughs. Some of the suspence in this book will keep you laughing and crying over their detailed antics. I recommend reading Ginger Pye before this one though. All in All a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A family travels to Fire Island and finds lots of surprises
The Pye family goes to Fire Island with Papa, the ornithologist father of the family. There they find a cat, and unravel the mystery of where Uncle Bennie's (the four-year old uncle of the 2 children) crickets are, and where Papa's ornithologist friend's pet owl is ... Read more
