5-0 out of 5 stars Castle Under Attack
This book really helped our seven-year-old son who was struggling to enjoy reading as a first grader. He got excited about the pictures of Legos and decided to read this out loud. He memorized most of the difficult words and this helped build his confidence as reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Orchard Park, NY Mom
My six-year old son laughed out loud when he read this very funny book. It had an interesting and amusing plot about a good King and his family, and some nasty bad knights out to cause trouble. The book also has the little fact boxes on some pages which contain information about coats of arms, suits of armor, etc. I think any 6 or 7 year-old child would love this book. It's the best Dorling Kindersley Level 2 book of all.

Great book for boys who otherwise don't want to read. My son has to read aloud at least 10 minutes a night. He hates it! But since finding the DK Lego Readers He can't wait. He is a lego maniac. Kids can read and re-read then several times with out getting tired of them.

This is a fine, carefully written Reader. My son, who plays with Lego, loved both the story and the pictures. 5-0 out of 5 stars Through, fun and a smart read!
If you were only going to get 3 or 4 books about Shakespeare, this really should be the first! It is done in the DK style format (even if your not a big fan of this style this book makes a great exception to the rule)and the pages are covered with info and pictures. This is the first one of these readers level style that was meaty and entertaining. Well, Well done!

    5-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2* The Play's the Thing--and More!
This book transports you to 1602 London and its famous Globe theater, the venue for some of Shakespeare's greatest plays. One of its many strengths is that it is told in first person narrative by multiple characters: A young male character actor playing a woman as well as Richard Burbage, perhaps the most famous Shakespearian actor of the time, an apple seller struggling to make a living during a time of plague, a wealthy theater-goer and a poor one, a pickpocket, and Burbage's brother, Cuthbert, the force being the building of the Globe.

The narratives and sidebars are full of interesting facts and" asides, from the major types of plays and play-goers ("people whose clothes were thought to be too expensive [for their station]...were arrested and fined." There's an excellent section on Richard Burbage and his techniques, along with details on stage production, the history upon which Henry V was based, and the tricks that kept audiences spellbound.

Highlighting both the high and low culture/classes of the period, "Welcome to the Globe" gives a fresh and colorful presentation on a subject many school-age children might otherwise find distant and boring. There's an intimacy to the narratives that complements the panoramic view of the broader culture in which the plays thrived. The book may interest readers into further exploration not only of the theater, but of culture, history, and science. The scope and quality here yields yet another DK hit! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Born to be Beautiful
I have always thought that the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly is just amazing. In this story, a butterfly flits from flower to flower and looks for a leaf where she can lay her eggs. The photography is stunning and you can actually see the caterpillar growing inside the egg. Once the caterpillar hatches, she eats and eats and eats.

As the caterpillar gets bigger and bigger, she sheds her skin until finally she looks for a sturdy leaf and hangs upside down. The outside skin turns hard and inside, she is turning into a beautiful creature. One day the chrysalis splits open and a new butterfly emerges to dry in the sunshine.

On the last page, there is a picture word list and your child can sign and date the back cover to remind them of their accomplishment when they are able to completely read this book on their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to read, then read to learn!
While living in Africa we would often rescue frogs from our pool. Sometimes eggs had already been laid and the eggs were wrapped in a clear jelly. In the stream near our home we would collect tadpoles and take them home to show mom. Sometimes we found what we thought were miniature frogs. They were just baby frogs and we were sent back to the stream to release them so they could grow up and be productive insect hunters.

Yes, there is a certain wonder in watching animals grow up in the wild and that is how it should be in an ideal world. This same wonder can be transmitted through books with stunning photographs.

Eyewitness Readers are designed in conjunction with leading literary experts. The engaging easy-to-read stories are accompanied by photographs which show every detail in full color and with great clarity. DK is known for this great quality. This book is level one and is for children who are just beginning to read.

Level one contains picture dictionary boxes, word repetition, limited vocabulary and simple sentences. Children can begin to read at the early age of three, but some don't learn to read until they are 8.

Learning to read by the phonics method allows children to start reading earlier and before children will be able to read this book they will need to know phonics. This is also a fun book you can read to your child. The phonics game sold here at Amazon can help children get a head start in life in the department of reading. First children learn to read and then they read to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tadpoles rule!
"Tale of a Tadpole" combines excellent full-color photographs with a simple text by Karen Wallace in order to tell the story of a tadpole's life cycle. The result is a delightful book for beginning readers.

Like the other books in this series, "Tale of a Tadpole" includes a "Picture Word List" at the end. This is basically a summary of vocabulary words with a photograph to illustrate each word: "gills," "eye," etc. The main text of the book begins with the newly laid eggs, and depicts the tadpole (and sometimes his siblings) hatching, evading predators, and undergoing the marvelous metamorphosis into a full-grown frog.

The photography is superb. Both "action shots" and more relaxed scenes are skillfully captured. And our star tadpole/frog is a most appealing hero! Overall, I highly recommend this book both for its educational value and for its charm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent non-fiction for preschoolers
This book works well as a non-fiction read-aloud for preschoolers. Great photos keep their attention as the book briefly, but thoroughly, describes the environment & life of a frog from egg to mature frog. Wallace does a better job than some similar books at providing a bit of a story-line to go along with all of the facts. ... Read more

My 2 year old LOVES this book!!! We "tone down" the fact that some Dinosaurs eat others, but she loves the realistic pictures, loves hearing the names, and learned to identify and pronounce all the Dinosaurs in this book the second day we had it... this book is fantastic! The ONLY drawback is that now our daughter wants more books just like this, and we've not been able to find anything else quite like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but maybe too graphic for young children
I am a big fan of all things "eyewitness." I love the format and the user-friendly approach, and the graphics are always great. This book is no exception. It is beautifully done.

The only "concern" I have is that it may be a little hard to handle for children. I am a bit surprised that the recommended age for this book is apparently 7-9 (second through forth grades), because some of the pictures are so graphic that they even made me a little "queasy." The popular conception of the mummy is of a dead body completely covered in linen, as pictured on the cover of this book. But inside this book there are very graphic pictures of some mummies unwrapped with skulls and bones very visible. Though highly informative and beautifully done, I found this book somewhat disturbing in that sense. It's a little too graphic for me.

In my opinion, the most interesting thing about this book is that it depicts Eva Peron as a "mummy." She was embalmed after she died. Biographical information is given on her, and I was impressed that the authors got it right (as Eva Peron is often buried under a lot of myths, half truths, and fabrications). They were also very kind in their description of her legacy and the affection of the Argentine people for her. A few pictures of Evita are in this book, including a shot of her in her coffin (again, a bit graphic [the coffin is actually open]).

I give this book four stars for that reason: it might be a bit too graphic for younger children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Violent bugs! Discordant Text.
Predator insects star in the Eyewitness Reader Book, Bugs!Bugs!Bugs! by Jennifer Dussling.Following in the style of other Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness books, Bugs!Bugs!Bugs! overflows with clear, eye-catching, color photographs. The cover photograph may attract reluctant readers with its graphic photograph detailing a preying mantis chomping its teeth into a captured fly.Readers enter a world of extremely magnified, floating insect photographs on white backgrounds. The images depict insects attacking each other or standing alone.
Accompanying text discusses the insect pictured in the stilted, easy language of a level two reader.Plainly labeled as a level two book, Bugs!Bugs!Bugs! fits into the popular genre of Reading Level Books.Although the author has extensive writing experience with leveled readers, the subject of the text jumps from page to page without good transitions and creates a hard-to-follow jumble of words-which potentially creates a difficult reading environment for the intended reading audience of children just beginning to read alone.Informational boxes scattered throughout the pages add additional tidbits on insect behavior-also adding additional confusion.Due to the discordant text, the book would be better used as a picture book where children read a caption here and there.
As a leveled reader, the book includes a note for parents which explains the leveled reader system and recommends the book for children just beginning to read (between ages 3-8).As an eyewitness reader, Bugs!Bugs!Bugs! follows the leveled reader guidelines for level two:approximately 700 words; 70% pictures and 30% text.Sure to be popular due to the graphic cover and leveled reader status, the book would be a satisfactory addition to larger collections but should be skipped for smaller collections since better leveled readers already exist.

Teaches basic vocabulary and ideas related to space and various spacecrafts (probe, satellite, etc.). Colorful and varied book design. Has select vocabulary words in boxes with an appropriate photograph. Text is straightforward. For example, "The plane part of the space shuttle can be used again and again. It takes off like a rocket, then it glides back to Earth and lands like an airplane." (...)

This book was given to my 4 year old for his birthday. The book is fairly easy to read, and provides photos and descriptions of new vocabulary words. 5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for the legendary lost city of Atlantis
I was always more interested in the "real" Atlantis that the ones that popped up in fiction ever since I read a "Reader's Digest" article that explained how archeologists were looking at the volcanic island of Thera in the Aegean sea as the legendary island. The most interesting part of the article talked about how the volcanic explosions that destroyed Thera may well have been the cause of the plagues of Egypt, all of which are apparently associated with volcanic eruptions. Since I am planning a trip to Greece early next year that could involve a few days on the black sand beaches of Thera, I have been doing a bit of research on both the place and the legends of Atlantis.

"Atlantis the Lost City?" is one of the Dorling Kindersley Readers for young readers (Level 4, Proficient Readers), that combines lots of color photographs and detailed illustrations with informative text. Andrew Donkin basically informs young readers about the history of the search for Atlantis, looking at the original story told by Plato (which may have been meant as an allegory rather than a true tale), and then covering all of the various locations around the world where people have been convinced they have found the lost city/continent. Donkin takes pain to explain not only the reasons why a particular location, such as the Azores or Crete, were picked, but also the evidence that exists against those locations. Consequently, without explicitly intending to do so, "Atlantis the Lost City?" introduces young readers to how archaeologists do their work, both in terms of uncovering ancient treasures and in reasoning out where to look. Besides, you really cannot beat the price on these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
A bought this book for my 8 year-old and ended up reading it myself. I've done a fair amount of my own reading on Atlantis and to my surprise I found this to be a really well written overview of many famous Atlantis ideas. The book begins with a nice retelling of Plato's original story. There are some really stunning illustrations in the book - from the original artwork showing the capital city of Atlantis as it might have been, to many photographs of undersea ruins etc. The author has done a great job, and produced a book that I and my son enjoyed in equal measure! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining, yet informative, reading for young readers
The entertainment value of this basic summary of the Incredible Hulk's story in Marvel Comics is high, and should certainly capture the attention of the proficient young readers. It's quite literate with good vocabulary for the reading level. Importantly, though it's fun. While conveying the spirit of the comic book character, Teitelbaum brings in related bits of information aimed at increasing the young reader's knowledge while stimulating youthful curiosity into learning more about the Hulk's literary predecessers, about early concerns about nuclear energy, about the cold war and its anxieties, about the fields of scientific research along with other topics.

The emphasis though is on entertainment which is what should draw the young readers into reading it, strengthening reading skills and expanding their knowledge at the same time. ... Read more
