5-0 out of 5 stars Beginnings and Endings.
This wonderful children's book explains the history of the ill-fated ship, from the beginning of its maiden voyage in England to the discovery of the boat at the bottom of the ocean depths by Dr. Robert Ballard. The illustrations are lively and vibrant, giving depth to the easy to understand, yet enchanting text. I have read several children's books about the Titanic and this one seems to have the best of everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written and Educational
This fabulous children's book recounts with wonderful illustrations and simple language the tragic and familiar story of the Titanic. When the movie came out my children (then 5 and 8) were not allowed to watch it (why ask for nightmares? ). This book, carefully written with attention to detail, was sufficient to satisfy their need to know about this event in a manner that was sensitive, appropriate and accurate. There is even a picture in the first chapter that shows a cut-away style picture of how the ship was set-up: "Fancy rooms" on the top decks, swimming pool and squash courts at the bottom, and all kinds of rooms in between. Someday my children will be old enough to handle the feelings that the movie evokes, but until then, (since we live in Washington State) I want to be able to use a ferry once in a while! I'm very thankful for this well written, historical children's book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!
When I was in the 3rd grade, this was my favorite book of all time. I literally must have read it 100 times. I can't believe that I found it on Amazon.com! I am so excited to read it again. I would recommend anyone to get this book- especially Titanic enthuiastes like me(this book made me one).

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
Ever since the movie came out, my 2nd grade students have had a fascination with Titanic. You couldn't ask for a better book than this to describe the ship, the passengers and the human pride and frailties that led to the sinking. This book is well-written enough that it is easy for young minds to understand and complex enough to keep them entranced. Even adults will find it interesting and, between you and your kids, your copy will probably be read to shreds in no time!

5-0 out of 5 stars I could not even breathe when I finished the book!
I was sad when the men died and it was not fair for the poor people when they tried to get saved. The Titanic couldn't get past the iceberg because there was a wall of icebergs. There was another ship nearby, but they didn't understand that the Titanic was sinking. I am eight years old. ... Read more

Lions at Lunchtime
By: Mary Pope OsborneG

My book is about Jack and Annie going to Africa. Jack can't find the lions. Will Jack find the lions? The story tells about Jack and Annie's exciting adventures to solve riddles and become librarians.
I like the book because I like adventures. My favorite part is when Annie gets stuck in the mud because she was going across the river while getting chased by wildebeasts.
Mary Pope Osborne's story can be fun and interesting when shared with your brother or sister.

5-0 out of 5 stars You're off on another great adventure!
Lions at Lunchtime is a great book, written by Mary Pope Osborne. It is about Jack and Annie's adventures in Africa. The magic Tree House takes them to Africa to solve a riddle. Jack and Annie meet a lot of animals. They also meet a worrior. You will have to read the book to see if they meet any lions.
If you like animals, you will like reading Lions at Lunchtime. It was an exciting book. I really like the part when Jack and Annie walk under a giraffe. You will have to read the book to find out why they walk under the giraffe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Neat book for countless reasons!
This book was my first, but my 4th best. I mean, it's still tremendous, but the action isn't the best, but good enough. My favorite part is the part where Jack and Annie face a terrible time getting back to the tree house. Also, the funny part is at the time mentioned above, and at the beginning of the story. It's where Jack and Annie discover lions dislike giraffes. I get the reason, but it was still very funny. Also, I didn't know that giraffes could give a big kick like that. Well, I'm not going to spoil the book, so read it for yourself, and I guarantee you'll love it even though it may not be the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars MY KID WAS UP ALL NIGHT!!!!
just to let any potential reader know that my 9 year old started this book at bedtime---but did not put it down until she was done. this is unlike her. although she is a fine reader, she gravitates towards "picture" books at bedtime. so, i guess we have finally found a series that has kept her interest. we both recommend the magic treehouse library series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lions
"Where are the lions?"

Jack wonders when the Magic Tree House whisks him and his sister, Annie to the vast plains of Africa. Before he can find out, Annie starts to help hundreds of wildebeests cross a rushing river. Next they follow a honey of a bird and meet an awesine Masai warrior. Jack hopes any lions will just stay away. Jack is about to be very dissapointed.....

But, you won't be when you read Lions At Lunchtime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Young Cam Jansen Rocks!
My 3-year old loves the pictures and the story line, and knows just when to say "Click!" along with Cam.

We have most of the Young Cam Jansen paperbacks and recommend them unreservedly for other read-along parents, especially parents of young girls. Less-than-ideal personalities, personal conflicts and misunderstandings are all presented, WITH good resolutions, character modeling, and handling of sticky situations.

The main character is a self-confident, intelligent girl thinker and investigator, with a boy as her best friend. Not exactly typical, and not for ultraconservative parents who think that only boys should use their minds and have adventures.

One particularly nice aspect is that most of the stories take place outside of a public-school setting, recognizing that most discovery and meaningful social interactions take place outside of that institution -- a point not lost on homeschooling-minded parents.

This particular story is set in the Art class, where creativity and fun are the dominant theme, not the lesser aspects of the typical public school experience.

Get and read the Young Cam Jansen series! ...

5-0 out of 5 stars It Runs in the Family
I remember Cam Jansen from when *I* was a little girl (and I am 27 years old). I always loved reading the mysteries and couldn't put them down. Now I get to share Cam with my own daughter. The Young Cam Jansen books are perfect for younger children. My daughter is 4 and 1/2 years old and loved the book! She has been reading since she was 3 years old so this was right on her level. It was enjoyable for us to read together and also for her to read on her own. She listened intently and helped Cam solve the mystery. By really thinking and solving the mystery, it gave her such a boost... I think that is one of the great things about the Cam Jansen books... they are "easy" enough for the childern to solve and they can be very proud of themselves for using their minds to solve mysteries. I highly recommend Cam Jansen and Young Cam Jansen books! Parents, don't be surprised if you find yourself reading them, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Young Cam Jansen and the Lost Tooth
My 7-year-old daughter and I read this book together. She loved it! Cam - short for Camera, because of her photographic memory - helps her friends solve mysteries. In this case it was a lost tooth. This book has 5 easy-to-read chapters. The story moves along nicely from chapter to chapter, and my daughter did not want to stop until we had read the whole book. She was able to follow the story line as we read and could anticipate what was going to happen. Words were sometimes challenging but overall, an easy read. We will definitely look for more Cam Jansen books to read! ... Read more

In this first counting book, Max trades his house with 2 chimneys, 3 soldiers, 4 bears, and all the rest of his toys for Ruby's 1 lovely doll, Emily. A fair exchange!Rosemary Wells's original four Max Board Books, published in 1979 by Dial and followed by an additional four in 1985, were the first high-quality board books in the U.S. and became immediate classics. Total sales of the eight books were over 1.2 million! But more important, they have been loved by millions of children. For the next generation Rosemary Wells has now completely re-illustrated all eight delightful Max books in her bold, new full-color style. These wonderful stories with real characters are funnier than ever. They are terrific first books, especially with the increased focus on the importance of reading to babies and toddlers, a cause that Mrs. Wells has been wholeheartedly promoting for several years with her The Most Important 20 Minutes of Your Day reading program and now the Prescription for Reading Initiative. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars cute counting book with abrupt ending
Max wants Ruby's doll, Emily, but Ruby will not part with her. Max has a house with 2 chimneys, 3 soldiers, 4 bears, etc. but all he wants is Emily.

This is a cute counting book, especially for fans of this charming brother-sister bunny duo. But the ending is rather abrupt and always leaves my child wondering what happens next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This a good book for any child of all ages to read. I am only 15 and I love Max. I watch the show whenever I can. I am proof that you can never be too old for things that are considered to be only for children. Parents or relatives that have or know a child, this is a very good book that is funny and has good pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful on many levels
My 13-month-old son has loved the pictures in this book since he was a tiny infant. He still loves the book. The story is very sweet, and it quite stands alone - unlike some other counting books, which have no "plot" aside from the numbers. I also appreciate that the boy-rabbit Max is shown to want a doll and that his sister (ultimately) thinks Max's trucks, soldiers, etc. are desirable toys.

I love to give this book as a new-baby gift. It is a delight!

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. Jones Big Fat Mouth
Morgan Turner

The best book!!!!

The best book that I have read is Junie B. Jones Big Fat Mouth by Barabara Park. Junie B. Jones has many fantastic books, but I like this one the best. I like this book because if you are down about something you can pick up a Junie book and you will be laughing your head off. For example at the first of the year, I was nervous and down because I was afraid that I would not get to class on time .So when I got to class I picked up this book and started to laugh. It made the rest of my day so much better. Another reason is that it is career day at Junie's school. Well Junie wants to be something and she yells it on the bus but then she wants to be another thing but then another, finally a boy on the bus says "be all three," but he says it in a mean way.On career day Junie shows up at school as a .............sorry you have to read it to find out. The last reason is that I don't like to read much, but since I have read this book I enjoy the series.
Have fun reading Junie B. Jones Big Fat Mouth!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A review by an 8 year old girl
It is a very funny book about a girl named Junie Beatrice Jones except she just likes B. and that's all. She has trouble controlling her temper and excitement. Sometimes she yells out "YOU'RE A DUMB BUNNY!" and she calls her teacher "Mrs."...she has another name too but Junie B. just likes Mrs. and that's all. One day Mrs. said, "Boys and girls, please take your seats. I've got a wonderful surprise!" "IS IT JELLY DOUGHNUTS?" Mrs. put her finger to her lips and that means be quiet. "YEAH ONLY GUESS WHAT? JELLY DOUGHNUTS ARE MY MOST FAVORITE EXCEPT I ALSO LIKE OTHER KINDS!" After that, my mouth got very drooly and some drool fell on the table. I wiped it up with my sweater sleeve. Just then there was a knock at the door. Mrs. hurried to open it. "HEY, IT'S A..." to find out who it was...read the book! You didn't expect ME to tell you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B Jones and her Big Fat Mouth (#3)
It's Job Day in Junie B's class. But she tells everyone that she's going to paint like Charlotte, unlock stuff like Roger, and save people like William. But she doesn't know what she has to be! What's Junie B's job? Read it to find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This book is great. She is a trouble maker with her big fat mauoth. Junie B. Jones is a very good character, and she is the funnier in the whole world. Buy it.
Trust Me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Just let Junie B.
I'm fascinated by the parental displeasure indicated in reviews of this book. You'd think Junie B. was a small bundle of pure inexplicable evil from the way some people have reviewed her. Undoubtedly, parents who have a problem dealing with Junie B. will also have a problem with Calvin from "Calvin and Hobbes" or any other book/comic/television show where the protagonist does not unerringly do the right thing at all times. Some suspect that this book approves of the names Junie B. calls others, ignoring the fact that she is systematically punished for each and every misbehavior she exhibits. Now, don't think that Junie B. is a godsend to children everywhere or the new children's classic. But she is amusing and chock full of jokes kids won't get. I myself have unwillingly been won over to Junie B. Jones. Walking into this book I was convinced it was just a Ramona Quimby knock off, right down to the grade Junie B. Jones attends. As it is, it is not only not a knock off, but an interesting series in its own right. Junie's parents are only half as calm and collected as the Quimby's, and you can't blame them a bit. What with a precocious kindergartner and a baby as well, these parents are fairly strained as it is. Junie herself is realistically portrayed, and I experienced the joy many a second grader must feel when I figured out that she was going to dress up as a janitor for career day. Here is a book that celebrates working class jobs as legitimate occupations to aspire towards. For those students who've either run out of Ramona books, or feel they'd like to hear more about other kindergartners, Junie B. wouldn't be a bad recommendation. Would read aloud very well in class, I think. ... Read more

Our girls read this after a trip to the Amazon, and found lots that they recognized & enjoyed. The standard of information is rather higher than that in the Magic Tree house books, which is reasonable, given that they don't have to worry about plot & characters as well!

Oh to be a new reader! For those of you who learned to read with the Dick and Jane books, the latest New Reader books are a whole different class. One pleasing trend is the introduction of well-loved characters and stories to new readers. (One example is the _My first little house books_ series). Enter a new series called Peter's neighborhood, based on the beloved characters created by Ezra Jack Keats. The pictures are eye-catching, reminiscent, naturally, of Keats' style. In this book Johnny is telling the story of how his family moved to Kansas. He and his two younger brothers are left alone while their father finds a place to live. They must travel 150 miles to find their daddy. Along the way they face many dangers. I liked this book because the boys were on a quest to find their daddy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Fiction Book
There aren't many stories written about African-Americanpioneers. This story tells how the Muldie family traveled West fromKentucky to Kansas after hearing about the Homestead Act. That is what makes Wagon Wheels so special. This historical fiction story was written with the help of memoirs from the town's teacher who decided to keep a history log on the town. On the last page of the book, it explains to the reader that most of all the events really took place in the Muldie family's travels West. This is an excellent example of historical fiction that could be used in the classroom.

My son picked out this book when he was 2 years old and we were both hooked. Over a year later it is still one of his favorites. Especially good book for vegan children about compassion for wild animals. I always keep a copy on hand to give as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girl Scouts loved it!
I used this book to help my Brownie Troop earn a badge. It was a wonderful introduction into discussion of helping animals. The exciting advenutre with its endearing characters is followed by a brief, but effective explanation of what children should and should not attempt with real wild animals. After hearing this story, the girls decided to take on a volunteer project at a local animal shelter. We are waiting for the next adventure of The Animal Rescue Club to see what it inspires.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
Annie & Jack find out that there's a rattlesnake in a ghost town and they have to hide from some people. And they find a piano that's playing all by itself. And we don't know what ...was playing it. It's a surprise for you, because you might find out. And I might find out too, because I have it at home. I have a lot of Magic Tree House books at my house. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was cool!
It was extremely awesome to go somewhere in the treehouse with Annie and Jack. All of the Magic Tree House stories are mysterious because in Ghost Town at Sundown, every night the ghost would play the piano at the bar. My favorite part was when they were riding and the herd of wild horses was after them. Something had scared the horses. I am seven and a half.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent, great fun (and frights) for Jack & Annie!!!!
On Jack and Annie's 10th adventure, they go back to an old Western town, nearly a ghost town, by a sorceress from Camelot, Morgan le Fay. In Rattlesnake Flats, Jack and Annie meet a mustang herder named Slim Cooly. In this terrific book, meet a ghost, learn what it's like to wear brand new cowboy boots, and also learn how to change (and how it feels to know you've changed) a cowboys life.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Magic Tree House books yet! 1st grader
My favorite part in the book was when Jack's boots were too tight. The riddle was Out of the blue, my lonely voice calls out to you Who am I? Am I? Read this book to find out the answer.I hope you enjoy this book. Mitchell- 1st grader ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!!
I would recomend this book for all readers. This book teaches you about Ben Franklin and how he invented magic squares. It also tell you about some of the other things that Ben Franklin invented. Some things are stoves, a special rocking chair, the first library, and much more. Then it explains how Ben Franklin became a clerk of the Pennsylvania Colonial assembly. For many days Ben listened to the other members argus. Then one day Bean started doodling. Ben doodled people, new inventions, and his pet squirrel. The other members were still arguing so Ben decided to do a math puzzle. The math puzzle had turned into magic squares. This is how we have magic squares today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading and Math Together
This is a whimsical book that still adheres fairly close to facts about the muti-talented Benjamin Franklin. (Frank Murphy notes on the last page that Franklin really did have a pet squirrel, something that I thought was the author's invention). The book highlights Franklin's lifelong knack for inventions and chronicles his achievements as a publisher, sciencist, writer, and patriot. The book also introduces magic squares, showing how Frankinn invented one as he sat, bored, waiting to take notes for the Pennsylvania Colonial Assembly. There's a good explanation of magic squares (a nine-cell table in which 3 numbers counted vertically, horizontally, or diagonally add to the same number), and instructions on how to make your own magic square. With 48 pages and colorful, evocative pictures, this book will appeal to the young reader, historian, and scientist. ... Read more

"A rainbow and a happy tree are not for Alice or for me. I will draw three-legged cats and caterpillars with ugly hats." Frances deals with birthday envy and how to be generous when her little sister's birthday rolls around. Another bright and endearing tale about a lovable little badger. She's a model for all of us who aspire to write children's stories. And kids love her too. This is one of my two-year-old's favorite stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read
My 8 year old had this book on her school reading list. She loved it and has read it many times. She thought it was really funny and loved the part about the gummy worms on the pizza. Any book that gets a child to read is all right with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its Funny
I read this book in my second grade class. This is a funny book. Even Steven likes everything even. Odd Todd likes everything odd. For example, Even Steven would like 8 pancakes and Odd Todd would like 7 pancakes. Even Steven goes through hard work with Odd Todd. Then, Even Steven notices that odd and even are both good. My favorite part was when Odd Todd and Even Steven win their $50 prize. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Junie B., First Grader One-Man Band
Barbara Park's Junie B. Jones Books have been loved by children for years. Her new series has Junie B. in first grade. Now fifth in the series is Junie B., First Grader One-Man Band.
We find Junie B. back in room one with her teacher Mr. Scary. The class has a kick ball tournament and she dreams of becoming the star player until she injures her piggie toe during practice.
She is devastated but her parents teach her that llife has disappointments and she can turn lemons into lemonaide.
I give the book a four star rating. My daughters and I enjoyed it. Barbara Park's characters are realistic and the story is easy reading and a lot of fun.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad influance
This story is not the best of the group. I have four siblings: Nikki, 5; Gracie, 7; Danny and Bobby, 6 1/2. I've read them the Junie B. Jones series for a few years now, but when I finished reading them THIS story, I was a bit dissipointed. I personally think this one set a bad "Moral" on this little kids. Junie B. always seems to get her own way and talks back to adults. Nikki broke her arm 6 weeks ago...around the same time I finished reading them Junie B., First Grader: One-Man Band. Nikki's class had a baseball championship while her arm was broke. She said she wanted to be in a halftime show and wanted everybody to feel bad for her. She had said, "I wanna be in a show! That's what happened with Junie B.!" I also noticed they all picked up a bad case of the "Back-talk Bug". They started back-talking to my Mom and Dad...even their teachers!!!!!!!!! They said, "Junie B. never gets yelled at by her teacher! Just sent to the pricipal's office and given a warning!" They also picked up her bad language. I reccomend the rest of the series, but i'd skip the First Grader's because they're not as funny. And Junie B. is even worse at getting what she wants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with loads of fun!
I've read every single Junie B. book. and I think this one is the best. Me and my sisters laughed our heads off while reading this book. So I think this is a very good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Junie B. is still #1
Barbara Park has done it again. Junie B. Jones is at her funniest in the newest book in the "First Grader" series. When she bangs up her piggy toe, it looks like Junie B. will be unable to participate in her class' kickball game. But leave it to the spunky 6 year-old to find a way to make herself shine nevertheless. I highly recommend this book as one of the most amusing in both series (second only to Junie B. Jones Smells Something Fishy). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Owl-eyed enchantment
This book is both beautiful and sweet. I initially checked it out from the library because I was looking for books that were more challenging than straight picture-books to read aloud to my then three year old daughter. I renewed it three times, which is the limit for my library.

Now I have had to purchase the book. I am pretty sure that I love this book as much as my daughter. Her favorite story is Strange Bumps, because she finds it hilarious that Owl cannot figure out that the "strange bumps" at the end of his bed are his own two feet. I vacillate between The Guest, because I find Owl's position by the fire eating soft pea soup utterly cozy and enchanting, and Tear-Water Tea, because I love Lobel's imaginative descriptions of the sad things that Owl thinks up to make himself cry. That story, in fact, has generated a whole new game in our household, which requires that my daughter and I "talk about nice things and sad things."

My only complaint about this book is that Lobel wrote only one book with Owl as the main character.

5-0 out of 5 stars Owl At Home in our hearts
Owl's adventures with The Guest, Strange Bumps, Tear-Water Tea, Up stairs & Downstairs & The Moon are passionate & dramatic. Tear-Water Tea is my favorite & my children would beg me to read this one over & over again. Tear-Water Tea is a bitter-sweet brew. This little book & the friendly, affectionate Owl were one of my children's best friends in their early years. They loved the ideas of looking at life the way Owl does, they blink in anticipation as the stories gather speed & they hoot with laughter at Owl's take on life, then they snuggled with satisfaction when it's all done & we've talked about it...

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book by Lobel
This even surpasses the Forg and Toad books, which every child must read. As good as children's books get!

5-0 out of 5 stars Owl Rules
I read this book like crazy when I was in Kindergarten. The art in the book is great, seriously. From the weather moot Owl story to the others, the art is so wonderful. I think that's one of the better parts of this book. The mood and enrivonment is so enticing.

It was actually quite funny I remember as a kid.

It's insane to look back on this after a decade or more. I recommend this book to anyone looking for Children's Stories, either at school for teachers or for families.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Read It Myself

Young doodlers and dreamers of the world, take heart--the famous Dr.Seuss, creator of Whos and Sneetches, was a doodler and dreamer, too.Kathleen Krull's engaging picture-book biography of Ted Geisel, the realDr. Seuss, takes us from his early childhood on FairfieldStreet in Springfield, Massachusetts, to the time when he's 22 years oldin Greenwich Village and just starting to think he might make a go of it as a person who draws flying cows. Krull tells a lively story, carefully including details that help us understand how Seuss becameSeuss, from playground injustice (Geisel was a German American and WorldWar I loomed large) to his love for Krazy Kat comics.

Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher, who also illustrated Seuss's My Many ColoredDays, cast Seuss's childhood in a nostalgic light with lovely,old-fashioned paintings. A four-page section in the back picks up Seuss's story again, taking us to 1937 when he launches his children's book career with And to Think That I Saw Iton Mulberry Street and all the way to his death in 1991. Acomplete list of Seuss's books and recommendations for further research closes this fascinating look at one of America's most belovedcreators of children's books. It's hard to know where to place this biography of Ted Geisel: Boy On Fairfield Street reads with the action and drama of fiction, yet is a bona-fide account of how Geisel grew up to become Dr. Seuss. Paintings by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher accompany a lively discussion of how Geisel got his ideas. Good reading skills or parental assistance required for this in-depth biographical survey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Children will Love this book!
Do you know a child who feels out of step with the rest of their class? How about one that seems to annoy their teacher because they see the world differently? This biography was made for them!

Dr. Suess seemed to frustrate his teachers as his drawings were so different from all the other children in his class - in this book, readers will learn that he reveled in his uniqueness and embraced his unusual view of the world. As a result, he was able to find success as a cartoonist -- though it did take time.

The biography isn't just for little kids, but could be gifted to any "child" who needs to feel proud of their uniqueness.

Do you hear a drum beat that no one else can hear? Be glad you do -- you might grow up to be as successful as Dr. Suess.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seuss-on!
A great biography for the under-12 crowd, The Boy on Fairfield Street is beautifully illustrated and tenderly written. From Ted's experiences with bullies to a humiliating experience with former President Theodore Roosevelt, Krull has shown the reader Ted's common failings as well as his extraordinary perseverance. Disappointing, however, is the short-stop ending just after Ted moves to New York at 22, before any of his famous children's books were written. There is an additional four page narrative but it is not fully illustrated as the rest of the story is and may leave some children cold unless they have help to get through it. Overall, a wonderful book that is just perfect for a celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2 or a celebration of this year's Seussentennial. ... Read more
