5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite of mother and son
When my son was born, I immediately began to look for Early Bird, but it seemed to be out of print. Luckily, my mother found my copy and it has become a favorite for a new generation! The simple humor captures the imagination of my son as much as it did mine. Typical of Scarry, there are so many different images to spark discussion. The illustration (pictured in the Amazon entry) of the family eating dinner alone provides endless opportunity to discuss foods, health, nutrition, etc. I HIGHLY recommend this book and I am so happy that it is back in print!

5-0 out of 5 stars revisiting own childhood
This was one of my favourite books as a young child and I am really pleased to be able to find a copy to give to my own daughter for her 2nd birthday. I think the pictures are great and the book has a good message about making friends. I still get a warm feeling when I think of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad It's Back
"Early Bird" by Richard Scarey was my 25 year old son's favorite book as an infant. He delighted in learning the names of the different animals and in the story itself. Now that he's going to be a father I can think of no other book that he would like to treasure and share with his new baby. I am glad that it's back in print so I can send it to him as soon as possible so another generation can enjoy the delights that Early Bird brought him. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Suspence for a four-year -old
This was my sons first book. What I liked most was that it made him want to keep reading to see what happened next to the poor cat. The words are very short, perfect for beginers, and the repetition helped gave him plenty of practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's first read
This book is wonderful for early readers. It is repetative (necessary for children), but still fun. Every word in the book can be easily sounded out by a young reader. I find early reader books with words that children can not possibly read on their own to be counter-productive. This book is a self-esteem builder. My daughter read it on her own and then read it to my husband. She was very proud and so were we.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a cat person, but liked the book!
These books (the "Early Step Into Reading" books ) have been a great confidence boost for my daughter. Yes, they are partially memorized, but she has learned to sound out words. This is the 3rd "early step" book for [my daughter], and by far the best, since it's based on more than one basic rhyme. I'm glad I bought the library binding. I know I'll use it for my younger daughter when she learns to read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old daughter loves this book!
As I am typing this review my two year old daughter is looking at the picture of the "Big Egg" book and saying "Big Egg!" Each night we read many books together. She picks them out as we go. I can always tell which books she prefers based on the order in which they are picked. "Big Egg" is always one of the first books to be read. She loves the simple language and colorful pictures and I enjoy reading it to her repeatedly. It's fun to "act" out the different animal voices the Hen encounters on her search for the parent of the "Big Egg."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for learning to read
Our kindergartner enjoyed this book as he learned to read. Some of the words were challenging, but the lively illustrations and silly plot kept him entertained. And as a parent, it kept me entertained too, even at a five-year-old's reading pace. The illustrations are clever and full of little, subtle details that you wouldn't expect during the first reading so there are always new things to discover. A great one to pick up for a child learning to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
With great illustrations, my 3 years old son can read out the story even without knowing the words. The story is about a rabbit that was struck in the street with cement. The animals in busy town tried to find ways to get the rabbit out, including using big fan, dump truck, stick, and finally power shovel to scoop him up. It is amazing that just with the simple questions, like "Can we blow him out?" can arouse the interest of the little reader to read the book. This is one of favourite bedtime stories for my son. It is really a great book. I highly recommend this book for toddlers.

I am a co-teacher in a daycare with 18-27 month olds and this book is a definite favorite!! They ask to read it about a hundred times a day and just love the "quack quack" and "vroom vroom" sound effects we make to go along with the story. Some of them can just about read it to us all by themselves just by hearing it so often as well as the clear pictures. This is my Baby Daughter's absolute favorite book. I bought it when she was five months old, because she had the Chicken Elmo toy that she really liked. She just loves this book. We've tried buying other Elmo books, but she's just not as interested in them.
